Review Tonari Japanese Restaurant - Camberwell

Walter
Wanted to go here for quite a while, but always seemed to walk past at lunch when it was closed. I had the dumpling and vegetable Udon with my friend the Teriyaki chicken. I was very happy with the dumplings and quantity and tasty soup with the nicely cooked Udon noodles. Great friendly service and nice peaceful atmosphere.

Really nice atmosphere in a small cozy restaurant. Some of the nicest Japanese food I have had in Melbourne, it's my favourite local place! The food is priced really well and the quality is great. You definitely get your money's worth.

The ambience is homely and the staff very friendly. The menu is fairly simple, but with all the Japanese classics that you would expect to find. Sure, there are better Japanese restaurants in Melbourne, but not for the price you pay at Tonari. Excellent quality, flavours and textures. Well worth a visit for a mid week dinner or Friday lunch, where you will see many familiar faces returning for their regular Tonari fix.

The lunch menu is very well thought out. You got to choose from a variety of entree and main, with rice, miso and pickles. The pork katsu lunch set is crispy and tender. The fish lunch set is fresh and high quality. The place is well setup and cozy. Will go back.

I had momo, tempura and udon when I went there with my wife and friend. It was gorgeous and awesome. I love this place. And also good atmosphere. I recommend very highly. The best sushi and Japanese food in Melbourne.

Relatively inexpensive and quiet for the area of Melbourne it occupies. Meal was delicious (I had ramen) but not something you'd write home about. Service is quick and dishes are delivered hot and together.

We had a family dinner for 8 people at this lovely local Japanese restaurant. The atmosphere was quiet and pleasant, staff were friendly, service was quick and food was excellent quality. We ordered several of the starters. The Tako Yaki and Okonomi Yaki were yummy. For mains we had Unagi , Teriyaki Salmon, Beef Sukiyaki and some tempura. All were tasty. Will definitely be back to try some of there other dishes.

What a fabulous & friendly experience we had @ Tonari. So friendly & the food was fantastic!! We had the Pork Gyoza, followed by The Pancake, then a Mixed Tempura & ending with the Beef Short Ribs. All delicious but hubby thought the ribs a bit chewy, so maybe the Beef Terriaki next time. We had a lovely bottle of Sake to wash down that beautiful meal. Thank you, & we'll see you again?!!

We came here on a Sunday and was the only table occupied in the restaurant until 7pm. The sushi and sashimi were ok. Their selection of food is pretty limited. We tried to order the beef tataki but they didn’t have it available so gimme ordered the tuna tataki instead and the tuna was almost well cooked. It was barely edible. Everything else wasn’t too bad but I think it was a bit pricey for what you got.

Best Japanese restaurant in the suburbs. We come here on a weekly basis. Service is fantastic and food is incredible. Highly recommend. Never had a bad dish or experience here. Consistently good. Must try!!!!

The waitresses are very attentive, and will assist you immediately when you require help, or ordering extra food.

We had the Sashimi and sushi plater, and i was very satisfied with the freshness of the ingredients. AMAZING PLACE WITH AMAZING SERVICE.

This place is very cozy, with traditional and authentic japanese decor.

The food here is very worth the price. You can taste the freshness in the ingredients instantly, when you take a bite.

I went there with 6 of my mates, and all of them were suprised that there were such place in camberwell.

Strongly recommend this place!

These guys have come a long way since they opened! Quick dinner out for two with a light and tasty fresh tuna salad and a fabulously hearty pork katsu don with a delicious egg sauce. Great value. Yummo.

I went to Tonari with a group of 5 on Sunday night. We ordered the sashimi 20p with salmon, tuna, and whitefish, assorted tempura, fried breadcrumb oysters, fresh salmon and chicken California rolls, chicken katsu don, and salmon teriyaki. Every dish was sensation and the seafood was very fresh. The service and ambience of the place is brilliant, which makes it a great little gem in Camberwell. I highly recommend this place for anyone wanting to try Japanese.

One of my friend and I had dinner yesterday. We ordered sushi+sashimi platter and vegetable tempura. The platter was fresh and creative. Thus the tempura veg was crunchy and delicious. The staff explained dishes well and was very kind. It was great experience. We would come back!

Service: 4/5 Ambience: 4.2/5 Food: 4.4/5

Really sad to see such bad ratings for a great restaurant! Been here twice and have never had any issues with food poisoning.
Staff was quite lovely and attentive, and the restaurant was very cosy!
FOOD WAS DELICIOUS. Had the tempura California roll, takoyaki, pork gyoza and chicken oyako don.
I could tell the California roll had just been made as the tempura was still warm. It was complemented so well with the avocado, WAS SO GOOD. Takoyaki was crispy on the outside, flavoursome and soft on the inside, gyoza was just like others I have eaten (very delicious).
The chicken don was very delicious, but overpowering and quite salty, definitely needed to dilute with the rice.

Overall very happy with this place! Will definitely be coming back, 4/5 bloated

I ordered takeaway curry for lunch (lunch special, $14).
The service was very good, that's why I'm rating them 3.0.
The food was beyond average and overpriced. Curry tasted like a watered instant gravy and I barely got any vegetables. Tofu was just all right. The worst part is that after eating this curry I feel itchy and not so well. Won't be coming there anymore.

My friend recommended this new Japanese restaurant at Camberwell. It was a absolutely awesome Japanese restaurant has friendly service, warm greeting and gorgeous food plating. The food was so nice and reasonable prices. I can say it is the best Japanese restaurant that I've ever been :'))

Bad experience with negative attitudes toward customers.
For some reason I had diarrhoea after eating sushis there. Price is also questionable
Not recommanded at all.
Jake Smith
Costy and rude service.
Hygiene issues; had food poison after the visit.
Foods are not as good as the review says either.
Overrated restaurant.

We came here for a birthday, no booking. It could almost be perceived as fine dining, the atmosphere was very elegant and calm.

The food was amazing, especially the tempura and udon (so crispy, could barely taste the batter, and also a large variety of veggies). Authentic, fresh, tasty and well presented - as a Japanese restaurant it served not only sushi but also hot, hearty udons and meals with rice and a large amount of meat.

Service was good apart from some staff having limited English but that was fine by us.

Was a bit on the pricier side, but we were willing to pay it for the good food!

Tonari is a very good restaurant. The waiters are friendly and the food is delicious. If I had to recommend a dish to eat it would be the pork katsudon and Yakitori sticks. 10/10 from me!

My favourite place to eat in Melbourne. Great friendly service and I'm always lucky to get a nice table. The food is super fresh. I would eat here every night if I could. Keep up the fabulous service and top notch food!!

YES! This is my new favorite place in the UNIVERSE. Here's what I've had and recommend...

Nigiri Sushi - Delicious and fresh.
Crispy Flavored Chicken - Amazing. It's incredible. If I could order only one thing, it would be this.
Yaki Udon - Yes, it's a real authentic Japanese dish. Very tasty.

Staff are wonderful. They make you feel like you are doing them a favor by letting them serve you. The place itself is quiet and nice. I'm not going there for exceptional decor though and probably couldn't care less about that. I'm going there to feast on awesome food. It's very reasonably priced which is a bonus. You can BYO alcohol if you want to. I don't drink, so a massive big feast is really cheap.

Go there immediately and eat that chicken. It will change your life. It changed mine. All of my fried chicken dreams have come true.

Noticed this newly opened restaurant so had to try it out. Enjoyed a number of share dishes that were well sized for price and consisted of all fresh and tasty ingredients. The staff were very warm and welcoming which enhanced our dining experience, will visit again soon!

This restaurant occupies a spot which has seen a long trail of short-lived unsuccessful Thai restaurants. Happily, this eatery hits the spot with well-priced, tasty selections which has seen its popularity rise dramatically since opening. Service is low-key and efficient, and the ambience is relaxed. Hopefully Tonari is a stayer!

Just had a wonderful Japanese meal here. Okonomiyaki was the best ever! Great local place. Fresh ingredients, good seafood, cold beer. Loved it, we will be back!

Good Japanese food and the sushi is great. The Oyako Don is worth getting. Have been a few times now and food has been good quality each time.

This is a newly opened Japanese restaurant in Camberwell. Classy, soft ambience and really good quality Japanese food. The grilled sushi were impeccable and we were impressed with the variety of ingredients in the beef sukiyaki dish.
