Review Ebony Quill - Camberwell

Andrew Lake
This was my first visit to this place. My friends had recommended this place for quality of the food and coffee. I had Wagyu beef burger and my partner had Steak sandwich. The service was good and staff were very friendly and attentive. Our food arrived within 15 minutes and was absolutely amazing. The quality of food and presentation was great. We were so full that we were not going to have anything else, but our friendly waiter convinced us to try their coffee with orange cake. Absolutely yum. We dinned in the restaurant upstairs and the ambience is great. Good sunlight and quite nice view of the street. I will certainly be back with our friends and strongly recommend this place. Keep it up Ebony Quill.

I went to EbonyQuill with my partner. We had a fantastic experience. We were looking for something healthy and both of us ended up ordering salad. I ordered beef strip salad and she ordered chicken salad. We got our food within 10 minutes of ordering and salads were yummy. Sumptuous quantity, fresh, and just the right flavours. We ordered coffee afterwards and my latte and her cappuccino was excellent. Service was good, with a smile and the prices very reasonable. Well done Ebony quill. We will be back again soon.

This was my first experiencewith EQ based on other people rating it a good place to have a meal. Everyone has since said that the food use to be good. Seems like the quality of food has dropped off. My burger was less than average. The bun was not fresh, the beef patty was dry and too small for the burger. There was beetroot on my burger which I am not fond off - This leads to the online menu being outdated as the description of the burger did not include beetroot. Inline with the online menu not being updated the prices are incorrect. Online menu says Wagyu Beef burger is $15.00 however I paid $17.90. Overall all parties said they food is not as good as it use to be. I did enjoy my chips though!

We ate there in July, and they made a mistake with our order. However, they owned up and quickly fixed it. To add to this, they did not charge us a cent for the meal at all, and also didn't charge us for the wine. The manager was so keen to make amends, that he really went the extra mile, so I won't forget this. He apologised profusely, and I really saw this as a man who was serious about doing the right thing by his customers. Will definitely go back at some point, as the food and drinks are quite good, and we just love hanging out in Camberwell (especially watching movies at Rivoli).

Terrible experience, rude waiter who pulled a face when we only ordered one focaccia to share. It came out and was basically just a piece of toasted bread with melted cheese and hardly any filling, missing several ingredients. We could see other people with focaccias that looked nothing like ours! Staff were rude when I mentioned it as we went to pay and laughed as we left. Will not be returning!

Recently visited this place after a while. Havent been in camberwell for sometime now. This place is fantastic as ever. The food is great and service is excellent. Could see quite a few new faces. The ambience is vibrant and staff serve with a smile. Can get quite busy on Sunday as we realised, but yet the service was prompt and quality of food great, as always. We were accompanied by friends who havent been here before and they too loved it. Good fun.

The best coffee ever. Don't miss out the restaurant upstairs. Look out for the specials. Good for large gatherings

Nice quiet spot in The Well with a nice feel due to the large windows. Coffee is decent.

Pleasant cafe in 'The Well' shopping centre. Like many options in Camberwell the food is family friendly so lots of options with simple flavours. Had the pesto chicken gnocchi which was creamy and came with shaved Parmesan on top. The eggplant, tomato, bocconcini bruschetta was simple and tasty albeit could have had a bit more eggplant. Coffee acceptable too. Not bad for a simple lunch.

Caesar salad was quite dry (little sauce) and less chicken than what would normally be expected.
Food on our table came out intermittently even though we had pre-ordered.
Prices were different to what was listed on their website.

The staff are not very friendly. I found the barista to be quite rude when I inquired why I was still waiting for my coffee when people who ordered after me were getting theirs. After I questioned them (politely I might add) I was given a luke warm and burnt tasting coffee. Will never return!!

Pleasant cafe with attentive staff. Excellent breakfast menu. The noisey level can tend to be a bit loud when crowded. Coffee is good and wine list is adequate. Will return

I have been here for lunch with a large group of friends, and was able to easily get a table large enough to fit us all. We tried some of the pizzas and salads, and both were tasty. The pizza servings were on the smaller size, but the salads were larger.

There was a bit of a wait time, and sometimes the service is a bit slow.

A nice place to go for a lunch or breakfast (can usually get a table straight away), cannot complain about anything too much!

Went into Ebony Quill today for a late lunch (2.05pm). Was seated by a male waiter who then went off to the other end of the café to play with furniture. I walked out at about 2.20pm. No service. I was so annoyed that I just left without a word. Nobody queried why I was leaving. If they can show me the way to make a dollar without selling anything, I want to be the first to know! Used to visit this place on a regular basis with family but I am pretty sure there has been a change in management and all the great waitresses were either let go or left and replaced with "furniture guy".P.S, Had a wonderful lunch down the road at Short Black. No waiting and friendly staff there.

If you want to wait ages for uninspiring cold food, this is the place for you. Seriously, waiting too long for a vegetarian focaccia that had not much filling and was cold is pretty disappointing. Others had the calamari, not nice and cold, and the club sandwich which was large, generous and of course, cold. On the plus side the coffee was pretty good. There are plenty of other cafes in Camberwell that serve you quickly and serve the food hot, go there instead.

I received my meal and found a fly mixed into the sauce. Strikes me as a careless chef. I didn't have to pay for the meal though which is a slight upside...

Very disappointing - have been attending here since it first opened and I feel it has changed ownership as the quality has gone - ordered the chicken salad and you only get one chicken tenderloin and a plate full of salad with very little dressing - the chicken burger was not on a brioche bun but on a normal bun which was not toasted. Sadly will not be returning - some foods should just be left as they were

Had wagu beef burger, so fresh and tasty, and the chicken parma was to die for, awesome friendly service and very quick service. Coffee is really good. Well done.

Awesome coffee! Seriously, some of the best coffee I've had recently. Always consistent and well priced. This cafe is worth a visit if you're in The Well

My partner and I have been here a few times. The first two times everything was fine; the staff were friendly, the food was tasty and well portioned and the coffee was fine. We both work in hospitality, he being a waiter and bartender and me being a barista, so maybe we are being too hard on the place, but the last time we went here it was absolutely woeful. The waitress was unpleasant, my latte was cold, burnt and full of big ugly bubbles.
My partners $11.50 lamb pizza was tiny, and was not what we had come to expect, as we have had the same pizza before and it had plenty of yummy toppings and was a good size. My chicken burger was cold, the tomato was cut too big and the cheese was sweaty, as though they had left it sitting on the pass too long and the whole meal had gone cold.
The man who took our money didnt ask how everything was, which was probably a good thing, because we weren't feeling very nice having just spent over $40 on a meal we wish we hadn't. Will not return.

Went to Ebony Quill with my friends this long weekend. This place has great ambience and is full of buzz. Fantastic place for breakfast and lunch. Nice city views. Food is excellent and great value too. Must try chefs specials. Amazing food plus the beer/wine deals make it extra special. Wagu beef burger is a must have. I loved it and will be going back again with friends.

Boxing Day Blues. As a regular customer of Ebony Grill I introduced my Christmas visitors to it for lunch on Boxing Day. Not a good choice for showing off 'a good place for lunch' because the waiting staff were clearly unhappy about working on Boxing Day (or that was my assumption). Food was okay (bar having to seek out the butter for my meal) and delivered promptly, but I don't like feeling as though I am a nuisance when I am paying for a service.

Not fantastic but nice. It has nice food including some nice pizza but the serving size is smallish but I'm a big eater so it doesn't apply to me. It is a nice place to sit and have coffee with your friends and it is nice and local for me as well but the food isn't fantastic so I neither like or dislike it.

Wow, rudest service I've experienced in a while! Waitress bitched about a customer soon after said customer left. She took orders with a frosty demeanor and didn't clear tables promptly. Average food including stale florentines. Don't bother!

Fantastic lunch spot. I've been to Ebony Quill Food Store quite a few times for lunch. The staff are always friendly and accommodating, the prices are reasonable and I really enjoy the food. I must admit that more often than not I tend to stick to my favourite, the vegetarian focaccia, which also has a side salad with a lovely dressing. I also find it hard to resist their fantastic chocolate milkshakes! Last time we were there my partner enjoyed one of the pasta dishes, and my grandmother declared that her focaccia was the best focaccia she's ever had (I think she had a chicken one). The food is definitely always fantastic. On occasions where I've been very short of time, the staff have been more than obliging to take my order very quickly once I'm seated. The decor and view (over the carpark) isn't very impressive, but the food and service has definitely won me over and I look forward to my next lunch at Ebony Quill.

Food was average but the service was incredible. Waitress Olivia brown was phenomenal and not bad on the eyes. Will definitely be back for my next latte.

Food is quite good but staff are more interested in chatting to each other and checking their mobile phones than looking after customers. When they do serve you they seem angry you interupted them.
Emma
Bad service, average food. My boyfriend said his was rather terrible. The Swiss Melt, which seemed like the best thing on the breakfast menu, wasn't that amazing... Plus the atmosphere of the whole place is really empty, like some middleaged Camberwell couple kind of place. So if you're old and easily pleased, this may be the right place for you. Highly unrecommended though!

Rubbish service. Tried calling for a week to make a reservation, never got through to someone. With five days to go requested a reservation by their website enquiries form, but when I finally got through on the phone after not hearing from them, they told me the email on the site didn't work and couldn't get me a reservation.

Four of us went in saturday for brunch service was fast and effucient although the upstairs was fairly full. Coffee wasnt the best ive had but the poached eggs were perfectly runny. Over all a good experience. Toasted museli is huge too.

We went there for lunch last friday , as it is our regular sport for yummy pizzas , and juicy burgers and despite being overwhelmingly slammed we got our meal on right time and just the way we wanted it i,e wooooo yeahhhhh. Lamb pizza and thick saucy beef burger and a couple of beers to wash it off . What a day . Thanks quill.

Dodgy. Work lunch - 2 of us ordered pizza with the lot NO ANCHOVIES. Our pizzas then came to our table with anchovies. We repeated the order and they took the pizzas back. 2 mins later they came back to the table with the same pizzas - they had just pulled the anchovies off with their fingers leaving bits of cheese with anchovy remains. Just think that is pretty bad considering people who could be allergic. We could have pulled them off ourselves if we didn't have issues with them. Pretty bad if you ask me.

Patchy. Inconsistent food quality and service.
I arrived at 0830 on Monday morning. All the staff stayed downstairs in the coffee area until a just arrived waitress came around at 0845.
Scrambled eggs and bacon were just warm. Had these been pre-cooked then reheated? Unsure but disappointing as this had been a good choice on a previous visit.
The ordered coffee never turned up so paid for the food eaten and scrammed.
Will I go back? Not sure but disappointed after this visit

Great breakfast great coffee! Lovely decor and great service! Will come again for sure.

Best value casual Dining in CAMBERWELL Great for a catch up with friends. Friendly and efficient service.

Unfortunately food has dropped in quality. Used to be good and value for money. Friendly staff however.

Reliable.. One of the regular haunts - great for a quick hot chocolate, coffee etc. Food is generally well made and prices are reasonable. Hot drinks, muffins and babycinos at the "front bar" can be had for staggeringly low prices by Melbourne standards. Yet to be disappointed by them.

Nice lunch. It has quite a limited menu, so i went with the chicken focaccia. the mayo was tasty but the chicken was so very bland. came with a nice side salad which was a bonus. friends had pasta and risotto and enjoyed those thoroughly. open space so very noisy and echoed a lot at the busy lunch time rush until about 2pm. Very 'sterile' cafe. no character.

I had the EQ big breakfast. The eggs, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes were good. The sausages were average. My girlfriend had the fresh fruit and muesli. The fresh fruit was under ripe. It came with a small portion of store bought muesli and a small spoon of yogurt. The coffee was good however other cafes do better presentation. The ambiance and decor was very nice.

Excellent as always. $12 for pizza and wine. Great Sunday lunch spot

Good, but not special breakfast. Very solid scrambled eggs and cold coffee. Expected much better from previous reviews.

Group of 6 for breakfast the scrambled eggs & hollanise looked & tasted nice. The fruit bread (toasted) & butter was didsapointing. The bread consisted of 3 small slices with minimal fruit which were hard, dry & cold. One of the flat white coffee was bitter and strong. The poached eggs with parmesan was adequate but a small serve and the tomato was firm - not ripe enough. Service was friendly but we will seek other options on our next trip to Camberwell.

Well, another good place for a quick and delightful breaky. fast and friendly service are found here, plus helpful!!!
Becky
Great coffee and the scramble eggs are very yummy.

Enjoyable. Have enjoyed a few mornings at this Camberwell local. Friendly owners with young staff who are polite but little inexperienced. Food (breakfast) and coffee have been lovely whenever we've visited, my only issue is that place can get a little noisy when it fills up, but this is really only a small grievance.

An all-day breakfast favorite.. The omelettes are extremely yummy. coffee is of excellent quality.

nice and relaxed atmosphere, attentive staff, speedy service and for the right price. highly recommended.

Value!. We dropped in for breakfast on Saturday morning after discovering Georges wasn't open yet. This place is in "The Well" adjacent Dymocks and the actual "restauranty" bit is upstairs from the main cafe section.

The place is new, clean, well set out and lots of natural light. The food was great. I had the EB Big Breakfast for $18 which was a big enough meal (the photo doesn't do it justice) but it ended up coming with an orange juice and a coffee...pretty great IMO! The other order was the Eggs Parma which was tasty and went down well I'm told.

The coffee was good (the machine was spotless) and the staff polite and quick.

We've had their lunch pizza before which is also pretty good value and full of flavour.

We didn't leave hungry either time and will be back!
