Highly recommend for a special night out. The atmosphere and welcome and attentiveness of the staff reminds you of the best Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong, Sydney or Melbourne. As a group of four we decided to go with the fixed menu, costing $88. Arrive hungry, though the menu is very well structured and there are many small courses.
The staff go to great lengths to describe each course.
We started with Kingfish sashimi; crab roe and corn consumme and smoked crab meat.
The Okinawa cuttlefish and scallop toast, with some squid ink had a intense array of flavours. The hand made steamed prawn and pumpkin dumplings with a prawn broth were the best dumplings we’ve ever had.
The hot pot of eye fillet steak and scallops were great. Finally, the sweet and spicy eggplant had an obvious but not overpowering kick.
The meal finished with a light lime type of mouse covered with sesame seeds.
There is a very extensive wine list from small wineries in ACT, Tasmania, Barossa, Victoria, Bordeaux , Alsace. Most wines are from mid $60 upwards. You can BYO for $18 per bottle.
For the quality of food and excellent staff, well worth the price for a special night out.
There is no better place to be in Canberra if you are a foodie and even if you’re not a foodie than The Chairman and Yip! This place knocks your socks off! Loved my maiden rendezvous and look forward to many more memorable evenings and nights here! The staff go above and beyond to pamper and care for you and the food is something you need to experience yourselves.
If anyone just wants a summary, here it is: modern Asian food, ambiance and service all superb. Price very reasonable. Conclusion: a magnificently run restaurant that provides an unmissable experience. If you want additional information, keep reading.
Sometimes life is too much fun. This restaurant is superb on every measure. I rarely give fives, but the Chairman and Yip deserves one. From the moment we entered to the moment we left was outstanding and hugely enjoyable and it made for the most delightful Saturday night out. We booked here because one sage member of our group knew the restaurant was a Canberra institution and pressed strongly that we go here. What a wise person. We loved every part of our experience here and I'll explain why in the paragraphs that follow.
The restaurant space is classy, comfortable and calming. It's subtly lit and nicely laid out. It's a lovely and sophisticated layout. We liked it instantly. The modern Asian menu is nicely composed with lots of innovative and enticing dishes and mercifully the menu is not too long. Someone has put an awful lot of thought into the wine list which seems to have the key bases covered comprehensively.
We were a party of five so we had quite a few dishes. Simplistically, I'd say we loved them all. They were all terrific. Ones that stood out were the kingfish entree, the tofu, the duck pancake, the beef and scallop hot pot, etc, etc. They were all wonderful. We accompanied the food with some lovely wines, a lovely riesling included, and it's a very thoughtful list as mentioned.
We felt the cost of the night was very reasonable given the quality of the food, wine and service. The service was absolutely outstanding. Easily the best service I've personally encountered for many years. Food and wine was served quickly by a succession of servers who were just wonderful at their jobs. Efficient and effective, affable and friendly without ever being intrusive, it would be hard to find better staff than the ones we encountered here tonight. They were to a person, excellent.
Well done to the owners and managers. Well done to the staff. Establishing, running and maintaining a business as good as this takes serious nous and effort and those things are replete here in everything that's done. The structure and the detail are all covered. I'm not a Canberran but if I was I'd come to This restaurant very regularly. Chairman and Yip is at the top of its game and its unmissable.
Really delicious Chinese cuisine, friendly service, great neighbourhood gem with lovely ambience. The beef and scallop hot pot is a favourite dish, as well as the duck pancakes.
I have been meaning to try the Chairman and Yip for quite some time and it was definitely an enjoyable night. The service was attentive and efficient. The food was also very enjoyable. We chose to go with the $75 pp tasting menu, all of the dishes were lovely, in particular the seafood medley. Dessert of the night was a nice surprise, vanilla panna cotta with espresso syrup and peanut brittle - was just perfect!
Hit and miss for me but overall a decent night. The quality and taste of food was there but definitely at the pricey end. Service was very attentive however, I did attend in a group of 7 and they only provided one menu between us all. The stand out dish would have to be the lamb belly, crispy yet succulent and well flavoured. The side green beans were nothing special and some even still had their fibre strings on.
I've always been skeptical about fantasising Asian food until I tried The Chairman and Yip.
I mean, who would have thought beef and scallops go well together in black pepper sauce.
Very interesting menu and great service.
What an awesome restaurant! From even before we walked in, I knew it was going to be great because they rang me that afternoon to confirm my booking. I knew then that they were on top of things. And we were not disappointed. The food was just exceptional and the service was outstanding. I will definitely be a repeat customer!
First visit to the Chairman and was super impressed. Food was fantastic. The service was good, but felt a little rushed at times. The only downside was the seating. We were at the first table and every time the front door opened we got a blast of nice frosty Canberra winter air. Instead of a partially filled bookshelf they really need to install a proper wall to shield the dining room from the entrance.
The move from Civic seems to have sparked things up a bit -- the menu is similarly inventive - slow cooked eggplant on sticky rice, duck pancakes and a delicious ricotta based ball of fried-ness on mushroom chili chutney. There were lots more choices for a light lunch: a positive thing for those expanding waistlines in service at the nearby palaces of policy.
The wine list was a bit disappointing, not feeling like a good match for the food - however, it's worth a return visit to test that perception.
This venue has moved from Civic to the Realm/Burbury Hotel complex in Barton (where Malamay used to be). The service was prompted and professional on arrival and made us feel very welcome. I was having dinner with a former student of mine who manages function venues in Canberra (as a chef) - so two potential clients from hell at the one table. None of the food disappointed. Other than the desserts, which were as best as I have had anywhere, the pepper beef and scallop is always a favourite at C&Y (pepper as in black pepper) - I love pepper so it is always a must have dish for me when there. The prawns with mild 3 chillies was mild yet very flavoursome (maybe a little too mild - a bit of zing would be good). I was not sure what to expect with the slow cooked eggplant with seaweed paste and soy broth, but it was delicious, and the seasoning of the soy was well balanced with the seaweed and the sweetness of the eggplant. A must have on the next visit. The Sichuan chicken was tender, moist and flavoursome - often chicken is dry and bland, this was definitely not - and the soy broth again added the right amount of seasoning to the dish. All of the food was well seasoned with the accompanying sauces, the wine list was good. Well worth the hike out to Barton for dinner here.
The Chairman and Yip retaurant has been in Canberra for a longer time than many Canberrans have lived here. Prices are a little higher than the average restaurant. What do you get for your money then? In short: a fine dining atmosphere; impeccable service; staff who understand what vegan means and remember your vegan booking on arrival; a separate vegetarian menu -- all of which is vegan or can be made so; and excellent food, beautifully presented. The Chairman & Yip would be ideal for a special occasion or work function.
Consistently exceptional, love the duck pancakes and the stuffed mushrooms. Have been here for intimate datez, and with larger groups. Either way, the experience is equally as private - a good destination for a celebration :)
Amazing Asian fusion. As soon as we walked in, I loved the ambient of the restaurant. Its very cozy and rustic. We ordered tasting menu and being a pollo pescitaeian I requested meat dishes to be replaced to alternative dishes. First three dishes - prawn calamaries and teriyaki style salmon was cooked in perfection and was so delicious! Then followed by vegetarian pancake (instead of duck) which were okay but it wasn't exceptional. stuffed mushroom and grilled eggplant was very nice. Last meal was vegetarian curry (instead of lamb) it was great but by that time i was already very full. I have to say their serving is very generous we were both extremely full after the main meals there were no rooms for dessert. I'm impressed when they said that they deducted money from the total bill since we didn't want the dessert. I'm definitely coming back to this restaurant when I'm in Canberra next. Impeccable service friendly staff great price for amazing meals. 10/10 cant fault a thing. Highly recommend anyone - must visit if you are in Canberra.
My favourite restaurant in Canberra!
Never disappoints. Been to the chairman quite a bit.
Experience was totally consistent with the last dozen or so times I have been there.
Took uncle and aunt to the chairman for dinner.
Did the banquet.
As always, exceptional.
Wine was excellent.
Pricey but, you get what you pay for.
Will I go back, yes.
Best meal in canberra I've had. Faultless service and food. The maître d was fantastic in offering guidance on choosing meals and even offered us a couple of dishes not on the menu and they were exceptional. Highly recommended.
Amazing meal, exceptional service. Cannot speak highly enough of our experience last night. we had the Christmas feast menu, and each of the many dishes was beautifully prepared, delicious, and memorable. Garfish, lobster and mushrooms were particular standouts. there were simply no negatives in this, and the service went above and beyond - skilful- unobtrusive, but very responsive in helping one of our party who was unwell soon after arrival. we could not have asked for more.
Early bird dinner - great value and enjoyable!. First visit and enjoyed every second of it love the vibrancy of the modern twist on traditional chinese food. Great ambience and recommend the early bird dinner it really is affordable and great service.
Fantastic food and wine. You can't go wrong and I thought the prices were spot on at 210 for 3 ppl for dinner and an excellent bottle of wine.
Great food, great service. We went with their early bird menu as we had young kids and it was good value
So so asian cuisine and overpriced. This meal was enjoyable but it really wasn't worth the extra money given Sammys is across the road for much cheaper.
Ohh so tasty. Love the Asian inspired menu. If it's you're first time I strongly suggest the dinner for two, that way you get a taste of all the best dishes off the menu. Staff are friendly and attentive. Only negative is the desserts - they could definitely improve here.
Goog, always Good!!!!. What a wonderful night! The taste of the food was amazing and staff were excellent!! I would go back time and time again!!!
Consistently the very best in Canberra!. Without fail, Chairman & Yip is the very best restaurant in town. Fine food, consistently good, clean and flavoursome. Staff are divine. Will continue to frequent this establishment for as long as it remains. Just perfect. Thank you!
Wow! This place is a must. Fantastic wines as well as food and service. I will be back.
Friendly and good food. We phoned on the day and they managed to fit us in, they were very friendly and professional and the food was good. It's fairly expensive, but that's OK so long as they get it right (which they did)
An amazing culinary experience. If your in Canberra it is a must dine venue.
Visited Canberra and this restaurant was amazing!
Fantastic. easily one of the best restaurant a in Canberra.
This place is ah-mazing, gorgeous looking and with good service. The a la carte menu is pricy but the trick is to go for the early bird special between 6 and 7:30...an entree and main for $35. Great value and a nice way to introduce yourself to the place. The early bird menu rarely changes but it's nice food anyway.
Reliably excellent. Yes, it's expensive. Yes, there are now others offering a similar style of food. But somehow, you just can't beat the original.
The Chairman and Yip is a great choice for a special occasion or an important work lunch or dinner. Professional and smooth service, wonderful fresh Asian fusion meals, beautifully cooked, using high quality ingredients and presented to look appetising - what's not to love about this Canberra institution. Oh yes, did I mention that it is expensive? Well, some things are worth paying for.
Try lunch for a more cost effective way to enjoy what this place has to offer.
The food is spectacular and the service is great. I would eat here every week if I could afford it!
Especially good were the duck pancakes and vanilla bean panacotta.
"always delicious" I come to Canberra a couple of times each year and always eat here. Excellent modern Asian at reasonable price for the quality with good service. Very different from my home town of Brisbane where I struggle to find any good restaurants
Enjoy it every time. I've visited the Chairman a number of times over the past couple of years and it has never failed to please. I'm consistently impressed with the service and the meals.
Last night we had the delicious Duck Pancakes (although I would prefer if the duck meat wasn't cut up as it is) and the Pork 'Cake'. I think the cake description is a stretch, it's a pattie/rissole (whatever you want to call it) still very tasty though served with apple, rosemary and a vinegar dressing.
Mains were the Shantung Lamb (always get this, crispy lamb with a sweet vinegar sauce) and the nice, peppery Beef and Scallop Hotpot. The mains are always easy to share as well.
It's licensed but it's also BYO which is handy, although the corkage is fairly expensive as you might imagine. They also have an Early Bird special, 2 courses for $35. It used to be $25 but I still think it's good value.
Will return again.
Chairman and Yip is a must do for anyone serious about eating in Canberra. A very worthwhile restaurant to visit.
Rating: 8/10 – The food type is probably described as Modern Chinese Fusion for Australian’s. The food is quite delicious, food came in on time, and the staff were friendly. No complaints.
Will we go again? No, as we prefer traditional Chinese food. But we would definitely recommend people to come and experience this set Banquet.
