Review Abell's Kopi Tiam - Canberra

Justan Knoff
Nice food, great staff & service. Char kway teow was very mild. Needed a nice hit of chilli. Mr Chen's spring rolls were beautiful. So well made & very flavourful. The pandan pancake was a beautiful completion to the meal. It was above average for prices, $40 a head.

My husband and I were introduced to Kopi Tiam several years ago by friends who used to live in Canberra but now live in Sydney. This Malaysian restaurant has become a rendezvous favourite whenever our friends return to Canberra for a visit and it is no surprise why. The menu is enticing and the food always fresh and delicious. The staff are attentive and friendly. The restaurant is cozy with both indoor and outdoor seating and in winter outdoor shelter and heating are provided. Highly recommend for a delicious, healthy meal and the banquet option is great value❣️🥢

Most authentic M'sian/S'porean kopi and teh with condensed milk that we've had in Cbr, and the empty mugs say it all. Great service and taste for their other dishes too.
Soniqbuoy
Friendly service with fantastic dishes that are full of flavour and well balanced. Staff keep an eye on your tea and rice levels and promptly ask you if you'd like refills. Lots to try and be tantalised about. Worth repeat dining.

Great Malaysian food and nice service. Went with friends who love the place - easy to see why. Excellent rendang. (Only dish of 6 we ordered that was less than great was Char Kway Teow which didn’t have that street food super hot wok taste, other dishes really good. Lung and Snow peas - a special, also really delicious. Highly recommended and we will go again when in Canberra.

Unbelievable. Loved all dishes I tried. Highly recommend the Mr Chen's Pork and Mushroom spring rolls with a beautiful sweet soy sauce. The Beef and Potato Curry Puffs and the Nasi Goreng and Roti were cooked to perfection and delicious. Highly recommend this place!

Portions were way too damn small for the prices they are charging. The food is good, but not the best. You can go to Dickson and get way better value for your food for cheaper too. I guess the price is justified for its location. Service was friendly and efficient. And the restaurant is cozy. I liked that you can sit outside during winter because they have outdoor heaters and doonas.

Abells is a gem for delicious and tasty Malaysian food. I’ve ordered several times here and the food is consistently delicious and quick. Customer service is friendly and wholesome - I think it might be a family run business. The char kway teow is a must try and the mushroom tofu soup is super tasty! Highly recommend

Amazing and very authentic indo/Malay food in a lovely coat setting. Would highly recommend and it has lots of gluten free options for those who require it

The only issue I have with this lovely place is choosing from the delicious menu 🤔 The food is consistently amazing and full of flavour and the staff are so helpful and lovely.

Amazing special Mr Cheng’s spring rolls. Best I have ever eaten. Definitely recommend.

Beautiful lunch today. Delicious food and great service and ice cold beer.

Stumbled upon this great little restaurant on Saturday night while looking for a meal. Food was sensational and would definitely return if we get back to Canberra

Loved the food , good price and quick service .The white bait was very nice and so was the dumplings and crispy chicken.

Amazing stuffed zucchini flowers. Great wine selection. Book in and find out for yourself!

Hubby and I LOVE this little eatery! We had dinner here after our wedding rehearsal in 2010 and have been back for our Anniversary Dinner every year since. The food is ALWAYS amazing!

a great restaurant with fantastic food. a definite favourite when in Canberra and highly recommended.

We had lunch here today and it was fantastic! Delicious fresh food with generous servings and excellent service! I think it will become a favourite with us.
Authenticity
Not authentic menu. No need to come back.

Crispy duck, sayur sayuran and chicken laksa were divine. Food came out super quick and service was pleasant despite being absolutely packed. Not cheap though - bordered on being “special occasion” prices!

It's been a few years since I was last here for laksa. Tonight I realised Abell's has kept the laksa standard high! Spicy, rich, coconuty broth with rice noodles and lovely seafood. Very delicious indeed. Best laksa I've had in Canberra...to date!
Marcus96
Lovely atmosphere at Abell's as we sat outside, lady owner was really friendly and other waiters/waitresses were prompt in serving us. Food was nice but not the best I have had.
Jonathan Cohen
Really good authentic food (the Balti Chicken was amazing) and professional staff. The ambience could be improved slightly but otherwise very impressed.

We had takeaway. As visitors to Canberra, this place was recommended by people who live in the area. It was the most disgusting meal we have had in a long long time. Overcooked, rubbery, recycled. The only reason we give it 1 star is because we did not get food poisoning.
James Cheng
4.0 because of the fantastically good beef rendang and wok hei for the char just teow. The laksa we ordered needed a sambal kick. But overall, good...

Absolutely amazing. Some of the best food I've ever eaten, particularly the Beef Rendang and curry puffs. You can see why it comes so highly recommended as a Canberra must-do restaurant.

Really good authentic tasting Malaysian food! The service was quick and friendly. We had the curry puffs (amazingly flaky!), chicken satay, lamb curry and chicken curry. The roti was very flaky and delicious also! Not expensive and good size serves...we'll be back!!

A cheap Asian eatery masquerading as an innovative fusion restaurant. Small servings, high prices, basic decor. From previous comments it seems like their innovative passion is from days gone by. It just strikes me that these guys are just in it for the money

Outstanding asian food! The curries are all so flavourful and the twice cooked crispy duck is my favourite. Service is also exceptional. Canberra's best!
Janine
Bought takeaway Beef Rendang. It was tough and chewy. It was also $21.50, and a very small serve. Had to throw out a third of it. Won't go again. Prefer Ginseng, which is cheaper and gives decent servings.

I woke up one freezing Canberra morning and decided I'd find the best laksa place in town. Abel's Kopi Tiam. The best laksa in Canberra! And it's no joke!
Hmm... Restaurant is cosy with great vibe and brilliant service. Unfortunately, this is by far the most unpleasant mi-goreng I've ever had. It was soo sweet and tasted like it was made with a bottle of sweet chilli sauce and had more noodles with hardly meat, greens or fried tofu to balance out the diabetic dish. If they handed me a packet of instant mi-goreng, i would have been happier with that *sigh*. Left disappointed even though their beef rendang managed to save the night because that was yum.

Brilliant Malaysian Fusion Food at Very Reasonable Prices. The only place in Australia where you get quality and real Malaysian fusion food. All ingredients used are of the best quality. We dine here on a weekly basis - never once we have been let down by Abell. He is a master Chef and believes in the highest professional standards. He does for example rendang better than what you will get in Malaysia.

Not good for vegetarians, but the non-veg dishes were fine.

OMG!. Had a dinner last night for the first time there. Nasi Goreng and Abells' noodles with prawns stir fry... Service was good but the food was substandard! Cold, bland and the noodles left some bitter after taste in my mouth. We've asked for soy sauce and salt to improve the lack of flavour but it was still horrible! The rice was dry, and the portions had 2 prawns each with a soapy taste. It was the most horrible tasteless meal we've ever had! The strangest thing was the place was almost full!?
We told the cashier that we wasn't impressed and he charged us the $71.00 and said OK... Money down the drain!
My advice is DO NOT GO there!!! The food was as cold leftovers... spoilt our evening!
Just go somewhere decent!

Loved the Blankets... Dined there last night on recommendation from friends who were visiting Canberra a few months ago.We had not booked so were very lucky to get a table, the place was packed and was just after 6pm.We were found a table outside under the heaters which was nice although I noticed each chair had a lovely cosy blanket draped over the back...Nice touch.
We took our own wine as noticed it was a BYO.We orders our food of Vegetarian spring rolls,Balinese Chicken curry and Twice cooked crispy duck with steamed rice. Our meals arrived in next to no time and they were a good serve. I Duck and Chicken looked amazing so me n hubby decided to share.Amazing tasty food and nice and hot.Really loved this place and recommend lovely food and reasonably priced. The only downfall we thought was the $8.50 corkage fee...Rather steep for the to supply two glasses plus wine doesn't have corks anymore,!!!!

Good food but Overpriced and overhyped. We tried the twice cooked crispy duck and char yeow dish with some rice.

The food was fresh, well prepared and tasty, with unique flavours that linger in my mind and vividly in my memories despite having brushed my teeth.

However, for an average of 20$ per dish I was expecting a lot more than what we received in portion sizes. I'm not an aficionado of the "fine dining" experience and I don't believe paying 30$ for anorexic ducks makes things any more special.

I did enjoy the food but not to the extent that I would frequently.

Just had dinner here with family. Very good quality food and lovely service. Had the duck rice paper rolls, duck curry, pork and tofu curry and vege/tofu curry. All very tasty. Desserts (sago and fried banana) also great. Very busy and a little noisy but overall very good.

Tasty Malaysian food. This place is always packed no matter what night of the week it is. It's quite a small restaurant so a bit tight inside and loud. The food is pricey (for malaysian food) but lovely. The seafood laksa was delicious and very spicey. The twice cooked crispy duck was amazing in the ginger plum sauce. The waitstaff are attentive and friendly. I would definitely go back!

Loved the Char Koay Teow. I was in a hurry between commitments and decided to try a takeaway
char koay teow. It was beautifully tasty, with enough kick to uplift the palate. I am used to thinner rice noodles but that did not matter - the prawns, egg and greens blended well into an essential wok heat dish. The nice lady was also generous with proving me two types of chills - fresh cuts and a condiment. The place was crowded on a Sunday evening and exemplified what makes Manuka so attractive a dining spot.

Went on Friday night food was fantastic & staff were just perfect. It was a great experience if ever in Canberra would be back for sure.
Daphne
Solid performer on the Canberra dining scene that almost lives up to the hype. The duck dish and zuchinni flowers are wonderful but there are some misses, the soy pork dish in particular. Friendly service but always busy so booking is a must. Downside are the unjustifiably expensive prices, but this is a Canberra issue in general. A nice dinner out but pricey for what it is.

Amazing!!!

Excellent roti. Great food at Kopi Tiam. Cannot get enough of their beef rendang or roti. The only strange thing is that not all wait staff will take orders? Bizarre but still worth it.

I have never paid so much for such oily and horrible food. Service was dreadful. I may have been there on a bad night, but seriously, I hated it so much I'll never go back!
Bob
Big fan. Have always enjoyed this place. Service and food are both good. My only criticism would be that sometimes the serve sizes are a little too small.

So-so. This restaurant has seen way too many customers to care about food perfections. It's always busy. Malay foods aren't cooked right by the Chinese chefs. They rushed it. Plus the roti's are from frozen packs, not made fresh on the spot. And yet roti is often thought to be the bread & butter of kopi tiams (cafes common in south-east Asia).

I've been there 3 times over 5 years. Once I explained to my friends that the food is not authentic enough, they understood. It's ok to taste good, but this is simply passing. It's not even close to the benchmark of being called Malaysian.

Sorry, as I'm sure the owners are trying to make money.
Jerry
My ethos on any restaurant is to try the most classic dish of that countries cuisine, and if they cant get that right, then i wont bother with anything else. eg. italian - spag bol, vietnamese - pho, and in malaysian cuisine its beef rendang.

Simply put, who makes rendang with sliced beef and stir fry?! cmon guys, make an effort.

i must say the sago dessert was amazing and would be even better sans fried shallot sprinkled on top!

Abell's Kopi Tiam is located in the 'restaurant precinct' of Manuka (although I must say, there isn't much else in Manuka) and doesn't look very fancy. The decor and set up is simple, albeit a little on the cramped side. But we can't really fault them for wanting to accommodate more customers.

Located in Manuka, Abell's Kopi Tiam (coffee shop in Malay) serves different type of Asian food, ranging from Indonesian to Malaysian, Singaporean and Nyonya food. I thought it was a tad weird that they also had Western food and did not even look what was on offer. The Indonesian dishes were more appealing as I was craving for it.

The roast duck “po-piah” was pretty good, full of chunky meaty ducky goodness. I was well and truly warmed up for the char kuay teow but I have to say, as pretty as it is, I was very disappointed with the flavour. It was all too clean, when char kuay teow really needs to have that burnt, charcoal flavour to be authentic.
