Review Cbd Dumpling House - Canberra

I pretty like it. It has the flavour of my hometown’s food. Looks and tastes pretty nice. Usually lots of people, table is a bit small, but food is good. We had chicken noodle soup with handmade noodles, and satay chicken today. We both finished them all. Recommended.

The ambiance was nice and clean. The pricing for the size of food we got was decent. The service was quick. We ordered two dishes, I didn’t quite enjoy the hot and sour dumpling soup but the char keow teow was good. Overall it was a decent experience.

Been there for dinner with friends without a reservation on a busy holiday evening. Staff is nice enough to manage a table for 5 despite the heavy rush. Appreciate the service. Taking orders and serving food didn't take much time. We've ordered a combination of boiled dumplings with chicken, veg and pork separately. They taste good as usual. Sea food chow mien pan fried noodles is not great. Chicken Singapore noodles are great and star of the night. House special fried rice is good. Can add more meat to it. Despite the cuisine, I find most of the food is less spicy and bland in taste. It may be subjective. Surprisingly i dont find chilli oil served in a chinese restaurant which is a shame.

We ordered Malaysian fried rice and dumplings noodle soup. Portions are super huge and price reasonable between $15-$20 each. I’m very disappointed in the Malaysian fried rice as it was sweet and fried with ketchup I think. Taste Totally off. I suggest the owner to change the name of this dish than to spoil a Malaysian dish. This place is more like a Asian fast food restaurant. Everyone seems in a hurry and impatient.

Quick service, generous portion size and lots vegan options possible. I had a vegan hot and sour Dumplings soup at a work lunch with 12 people. All of us got our orders in 15 mins. My hot soup was a bit mild - would have liked hotter (chilli / pepper).

A no-nonsense Chinese restaurant with quick service, great food and reasonable prices. Perfect place to eat before you head out for drinks and kick on the night ahead

All Food served in just 6 minutes. Peking Duck is not very good for the asking price of $22 for just six small pieces and very dry. Probably why they were served so fast. Chicken was ok. Fried rice was good Overall it was an ok experience.

The CBD dumpling house has consistently offered great quality food at reasonable prices. Service is quick and although the place is often busy and loud, this only speaks to the quality of the meals and popularity of the place. We consistently eat here with our two children under five and staff are accommodating and understanding, which as parents of two young children is rarer than you would think. Thanks to CBD Dumpling House for great food and great service!

The WORST Chinese I have ever had in my life! Called the restaurant to complain about the appalling order I received and requested to provide photos of the dishes they provided. Paid $24.50 for a dish of satay prawns which was pretty much a Chinese container full of onions. Food - horrible. Customer service - Horrible! What little sauce there was in the dish tasted burnt. I have never had a worse dining experience. DO NOT RECOMMEND!! Not even even when given an opportunity to rectify these issues did the restaurant work with me to resolve the issue. They were rude, arrogant and shameful.

Average. Nothing amazing. Shanghai dumplings had good flavour. Laksa soup was good. Would not recommend salt and pepper chicken. Mostly batter and quite bland. Restaurant should consider frying chicken rib instead of pieces. Seafood and fried beancurd was okay. Overall, just an average meal.
Jonathan
Poor customer service and annoyingly they do not split bills even for large groups. Food is ok, nothing special, although reasonably priced. I will not be going back.

While visiting in Canberra..... we lined up to check out this bustling restaurant. Nice layout and prompt servicing. The dumplings were good, although slightly bland and ordinary. Prices vs portion was fair. I’m guessing it’s one of the local favourites.
Sarah Katherine
Bustly and full of fun, just as a dumpling house should be! Enjoyed the vegetarian buns, the prawn and pumpkin dumplings, spring rolls and vege noodles. Everything was piping hot, bang on point flavour wise and efficiently served. The wait staff did their best to get us a table as quickly as possible, but looked completely run off their feet to be honest!

This place!!! We'd just come from a facility event, it was quite late on a Sunday late. Not only did they still let us do a last minute order while they were closing up shop, the food was fantastic!!

Now my ratings reflect only 2 things- food and the service. The vibe at this place is really nice. Being in the CBD, it's always crowded. The food: dumplings are good but I've eaten better streetside in India(says a lot about my taste buds). Now this being an indians perception, I should warn you- spice is life. So yeah, clearly from that perspective, I used half the bottle of chilli sauce and fresh chillies to go with. The mains- shezuan chicken and rice we're decent too. But I couldn't understand why people here don't smile enough. The service was inattentive and frankly just cold. That is that. Thanks guys. I shall pass here on.

CBD dumpling house at Canberra. It was popular and full of people. The food was average and customised to western style. Dumplings were a bit disappointing as it called itself the dumpling house.

Not worth the long queue. Staff attitude was apathetic and we had a 1 hour time limit. The worst part was that only red vinegar was available to go with our Xiao Long Bao's, no ginger was provided either. This undermines the integrity of how Xiao Long Bao's were traditionally consumed. The final straw was when we asked to takeaway our pan fried pork buns, the waitress tried to fit it in a small container causing the bun to crack open and the juice spilled out. This shows a lack of genuine care for us customers and very poor service attitude. A very disappointing experience indeed.

My friend and i saw a lot of people cueing up to this place and so we thought this must be good. The place was big and the wait wasnt that long. When we finally had the chance to eat, I liked that the food serving was really big and they tasted good too. It looks like a good place to have lunch and dinner with family or a group of friends.

Quick service, good pricing. Although I don’t like to drift from my usual order. Lemon chicken was not my usual- batter fried chicken(quite chewy) drizzled with a lemon sauce(sweet) Wouldn’t recommend. The special fried rice, dumplings, soft shell crab and their homemade ice tea are a must try.

Had dinner with a fairly large group today and was pleasantly surprised!<br/><br/>Absolutely love the number of vegetarian food items on the menu and the ones we ordered tasted delicious too!<br/><br/>Ordered veg fried rice, dumplings, noodles and chow min- all fantastic!<br/><br/>The service is extremely quick and the staff are lovely!

Attached to a shopping centre so wasn’t overly expectant with this little number. Order up some XLB soup dumplings, boiled pork, pan fried chicken and pork and some calamari. Fried rice too. It all pretty much tasted the same. Weirdly they didn’t have any black vinegar but served red. It tasted like mulled wine. Weird. Wouldn’t think I’d be back. If I’m looking for a meal that tasted the same and is sauced by mulled wine, I’ll head to Germany in winter. Brett Atley

I must admit, I came to the CBD Dumpling House with high expectations. Daily queues leading outside and onto the footpath would be the mark of an exceptional restaurant in Melbourne. Not really true in Canberra - it was good, but definitely not great.<br/><br/>Boiled pork dumplings served on a plate went cold quickly. Food was generally bland and the service was generally poor. <br/><br/>Getting into an argument with the staff who demanded cash payment (despite there being a card payment facility available and a "We welcome Visa & MasterCard" sticker on the front door) didn't really leave a great impression.<br/><br/>Overrated. Won't be coming back.

FOOD 3.5<br/>SERVICE 3.5<br/>AMBIENCE 3.0<br/><br/>A good place to have a variety of food, and dumplings as well. Lots of choices and food is done well. The soup was good too and they are accomodating changes to their dishes, worth going back.

After reading the reviews on here and knowing it was a very busy restaurant, I made a booking for dinner. When we turned up at 6.30pm there was already a long queue out the door on a Monday night. <br/><br/>We were seated immediately. The restaurant was packed, very busy and noisy. The five of us were seated at a table really meant to be for four people so it was a very tight squeeze. All the tables were very close to each other and we could hear the conversation very clearly from the next table. <br/><br/>We ordered, crispy duck pancakes (yum!) and pan fried dumplings (very good) for entree, crispy shredded beef, seafood vegetable with vermicelli hotpot (this was horrible. We expected it to be dry but it was some kind of spicy weird tasting soup), Shang Tung chicken, Singapore crispy fish fillet (nothing Singapore about this dish. We did not like it). Half the dishes we ordered were good and the other half wasn't. So I guess you got to know what to order to avoid disappointment. <br/><br/>If you want a nice, quiet and leisurely dinner, do not come here. We felt very rushed because they were trying to turnover the table as quick as possible with the long queue waiting outside. Service was almost non existence. When we were ordering, we asked if we ordered too much and we were told no. In fact we did order too much for the five of us (4 adults and 1 child) and there was quite a bit of food leftover. We are big eaters too. <br/><br/>The price was reasonable. I would come back one day maybe for lunch instead of dinner and I will probably order the dumplings and noodle dishes.

Had a work lunch here, peak of lunch time, the place was busy as, our orders were taken very quickly and our food was pretty soon after, we were a large group so expecting a bit of delay for the food to arrive, all of the food was amazing, would definitely go back.

I have been here numerous times, none of which have been extraordinary however is a good all rounder. Dumplings are nice, as is the seafood and buns however I've found all noodle dishes and stirfrys to be extremely similar, and relatively bland sauce. The vegetables are always fresh and I've found the steamed buns, fried rice and laksas to be the best thing on the menu. I love that it's BYO, chicken/beef hot plates are also extremely popular. The serving sizes are generous and the price is very reasonable. Always busy and it's hard to sometimes get a table - best to book.

Managed to score a last minute booking at this place for lunch. I always walk past here and it's always packed, so I was keen to give it a try. There is a good variety of the usual asian dishes. I like that the dumplings are the thicker skin type. Had pan fried pork dumplings and they are not the best dumplings I've had, too much oil but taste was ok. Other dishes were good but nothing outstanding. Staff ran around like mad and good customer service is lacking. They have pretty decent portions for what you pay for. I had a lot of food left over to take home and they provide containers for you to do so.

Really disappointed. Food were really sub par, it's edible, but not enjoyable at all. We ordered many dishes, and there wasn't a good one. The xiao long bao had really thick & chewy wrap, and really dense meat chucks inside. All the seafood & some veg were frozen type & not fresh. The sesame sauce on the mixed greens was really a peanut sauce & not a good one. The stir fry gai lan was so over powered by the garlic. The smoked duck was chewy. The hot & sour soup was bit watery. The only positive I can say about the night was that we had a booking so got seated quickly (the queue waiting outside was long), and the food came out quick.
Priscilla Li
Really disappointed with their service and dumplings. There were hardly any stuffing in those dumplings we were served and bit bland in flavour.
Andrew W
Dumplings are OK but the rest of the menu is the all to usual Australianised Chinese stodge. Nothing that special. It's a very big, crowded and noisy restaurant and the service is nothing special. Many suburban Chinese restaurants produce better food and service.
Daniel Tao Xing
Terrible food, very rude waiter, the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I just can't understand why this restaurant has very good business. Canberra people deserve better Chinese food.
Rosemary
The fried rice is not as delicious as before. And the waitress' attitude towards the customer is unfriendly. One girl even rolled her eyes on a customer. Therefore I don't recommend going there.
Absolute Vy
Good dumplings. Good variety. Very good fried rice. <br/><br/>My favourite is Shang Tung lambs. Crispy pieces of lambs are served in soy based sauce over shredded cucumber and chilly flakes. <br/><br/>Services are not consistent, really depends on staff members.
Andrew Li
Visiting act for a road trip and decided to have some Shang. Must say that it's not as good as the dumplings in Sydney.. Hot and sour soup had way too much vinegar. The steamed pork dumplings were ok. The combination ho fan was tasteless. Laksa soup was tasty but seemed to be more of a green curry than laksa. Overall food was ok but not up to the usual dumpling standard
Josh
Inattentive staff with slow service, missed part of our order and the food was quite lacking in authenticity and taste. When you come to a place with "Dumpling house" in the name and don't see many, if any, people eating dumplings, that is a bad start. The wrapping on the dumplings were thick and filling lacked flavour. Pan fried dumplings were not crispy either. Overall not a good experience

Another restaurant on the ground floor of the Canberra centre, one of the more popular ones. I have been here a number of times, and have found the food to be consistently good. The staff are very attentive and the food comes out promptly. I always go for the shu mai and the har gao.. delicious every time. Recommended if you need to grab a bite during your shopping.
Emmmmm
Ordered 2 hot&sour soup which has sweet chilli sauce inside to make it spicy n it tastes very wired for 2 Chinese people....dumplings r tasteless as well....don't even wanna take photos of them

Cheap eat with good food sized portions.<br/>We went on a Friday night and it was busy, people were queuing to get a table. When I arrived I was told that it would be a 10-15 minute wait, my name wasn't taken down and there was no waiting area so people were just standing everywhere and I somehow was pushed to the back. I asked my husband to check if our table was ready soon as other people were being seated even when they arrived after me. I got upset when he said to join the queue as I had been waiting for more than 15 minutes by this time. He soon got the message and we were seated promptly. Besides, this hiccup during our experience, we ordered and our food was delivered quickly. Customer service was non-existent but I wasn't expecting much being a busy restaurant. We started off we a serving (2 pieces) of duck pancakes and probably should have skipped entree as the duck piece tasted like it was fried which made it dry. There was too much onion in the chicken sang choy bow (4 pieces) but the flavours were nicely balanced. The black pepper beef hand made noodles was yummy and had the right amount of fiery kick. The salt and pepper white bait was just as good - very moreish. Dinner was nicely finished off with a lychee punch and lemon drink. We will definitely be coming back for a quick tasty feed.

Came to this place for a quick feed on Monday lunch, and was very impressed by the quality of both the food and service. I ordered the pan fried beef dumplings, which came quickly and were filled with a tasty filling and were nice and crispy on the bottom as they should be. What was particularly refreshing about the place was how low the prices were ($10.80 for the plate of 12 pan fried beef dumplings) given the high quality ambiance (clean and cool industrial chic decor) and service. I was highly impressed, despite being from Melbourne, where there is no shortage of dumpling joints.
Torys
Super prompt service and relatively large serving proportions. Definitely a good spot if you're looking for a quick-hit of oriental cuisine for a good price.

Great place - clean, comfortable, not too loud, good food and service. I've been several times and consider it a "safe bet". Love the hot n sour soup. Some menu items are better than others but in general you'll get a good meal at a reasonable price. It's not gourmet food but it doesn't pretend to be. Recommended.

Here is good place for quick lunch or dinner after movie. Some dishes are good but some are just way far from what it should be according to the menu. Being a Chinese, I even cannot say what it is when they are served as it's totally different from the description on the menu. The service is nice and the place is clean.

I love eating at CBD dumpling house. The open kitchen makes it fun to watch the food be cooked. The handmade noodles and vegetables dumpling are my absolute favourite! The service is bipolar. Occasionally the staff will be amazing but other times they are lazy and clueless. Lately I've noticed the lanterns are filled with flys and cobwebs which is pretty gross to be eatting under. But nothing that take out couldn't fix.
Andrea
Doesn't live up to the hype and dumplings are certainly not their strong point.<br/>Dumplings are obviously made days before and very quickly go stale when served ... Certainly not the delicate dumplings they should be. The Shanghai dumplings (the ones with the soup) are completely flavourless, as were some of the other dishes. Hugely disappointing ... And worse still, came home and was very quickly unwell in the belly. <br/>It's more of an Asian restaurant which does noodles and greens ok
G
Good ambience, average service, dishes quick to be served after ordering. <br/>However, the food here is overrated. Was reading all the reviews on zomato before making my way there. Got my hopes up high and left me up to dry. <br/>The dumpling skin could be a little thinner, and the hot and spicy soup tasted more like bottled char siew sauce thickened with additional fresh ingredients. <br/>Dumplings do look larger in pictures than what they actually are. <br/>Authentic Chinese food? I don't think so. <br/>But Canberra Chinese food? Yea, let's just settle with that.
Timmy Craig
For a place that is always packed the service and waiting times are ridiculously quick.<br/><br/>The menu is very diverse and has a mixture of dumplings and other traditional Asian items. I would recommend the Duck Pancakes as they are value for money and absolutely delish!<br/><br/>The only thing I wasn't happy with was the Pork buns, they are very doughy and don't have much meat in them, I've had better.<br/><br/>I think I have found my new local dumpling spot!
Baz Juan Pablo Sanchez
Wonderful atmosphere, excellent service, very delightful experience with affordable pricing.<br/><br/>The dumplings are very generous portion sizes, served fresh and prompt. Only negative would be the San Choy bow, was little too salty for my liking
Amy Bilston
Ya mum thought it was absolutely wonderful and amazing. Great service, quick and delicious. Ya yy y YUMMY!!! Good prices as well very affordable.

Vegetable dish came out and tasted floury (like the cornflour hadn't been thickened). Tried to explain this to the young waitress who flatly denied it. She then bought the manager out who also denied it saying it was the peanut sauce (???) as if they were the only people who can cook and identify when something is not right. All they had to do was admit they got it wrong (and we are all human we get things wrong) replace the dish, happy customers, happy days. Instead 4 customers walked out annoyed. I don't know any business who can afford to loose 4 customers as it's not just 4 customers but anyone else they tell. I will not be back, there are plenty of other options.

Service was bad. We asked a waiter about a certain dish but he could not answer. That part was completely acceptable but when we weren't done with him he just walked away. Initially I thought he was going to get help but he just returned to his corner by the wall as if nothing had happened. I was pretty surprised by his attitude. The least he could do was to get someone else to assist us. <br/><br/>Portion size was alright but the dishes were salty and makes you thirsty (loads of MSG?) as mentioned in the earlier reviews. Probably won't return unless as a last resort.

Oh dumplings, how I love you. There aren’t a huge number of restaurant offering dumplings in Canberra, but the CBD Dumpling House is (obviously) one of them. We went early on a weeknight and were seated in the window towards the back of the large, airy space. We started with a plate of prawn and pumpkin dumplings, which had a generous 14 dumplings in the serve. The prawns were whole and really tasty, with the tender pumpkin complementing the flavour nicely. The dumpling skins

I will never visit this place again. Fried noodle is too salty, I drank at least 6 cups of water during dinner; spicy & sour soup tastes like vinegar; wrapper of Xiao long bao is too thick and easily broken.
Those Who Love To Eat
We (the partner and I)came down to Canberra for the labour day long weekend, and to check out the Floriade. Whilst down here and not familiar with the culinary delights in this area. Who do you call? Zamato of course! This place got glowing reviews and so... We just had to check it out. Now I can see why this place is so packed our at 8.30pm on a Saturday evening! The food is fast and fantastic! The atmosphere is fabulous, and deco is also rather inviting. The best thing about this place is how fast the food got served! We came here starving and was full not long after!<br/>Our favourite dumpling would have been the Shanghai dumplings. Highly recommend it!<br/>The San chow bow was a real disappointment! Far too salty for my liking! I think my kidney had a cardiac arrest. All in all, great food and well priced! Thanks Zamato reviewers, I don't know what I would do with you lovely foodies!

A must go to place for Chinese food lovers.<br/><br/>We had the chicken dumplings which came in piping hot. They were yummy. <br/><br/>But a must here is the Steamed Barramundi with Shallots and Ginger. This was soft and succulent and the fish just came of the bone so easily.<br/><br/>The fried rice and sweet and sour pork were yummy too.
Nick Readshaw
Our favourite Chinese restaurant in Canberra by far, all dishes are great but make sure you get the special red curry chicken! You won't regret it!... The pork buns and any of the dumplings are also great. <br/><br/>
Alice Go
Disappointed!! San Choy Bow full of chopped onion hard to find chicken, Dim Sim is ok but not great, sweet&sour soup taste like vinegar little expensive. Good presentation- window show making dumping.
C.S.
Some of the worst and most expensive dumplings I've ever had. <br/><br/>Maybe it's unfair to compare Canberra to Melbourne, but eating at this place made me feel so homesick for the cheap and tasty dumpling places that are a dime a dozen in Melbourne that I couldn't help the comparison. Definitely never returning to this place again.
Jack
Good dumplings, messed up our order but it was worth it. Seating slightly tight and cramped. Reasonable price. Great service. Can get quite busy during dinner times
Kate Adamsson
Great dumplings and a really relaxed atmosphere. We went for a friend's birthday and shared some meals between us. Everyone enjoyed each dish which is pretty rare! Great price too and quick to come out. Highly recommend!

Lovely place - the Xiao Long Bao was soft, delicate and its broth delicious. My lunch partner and I were there for only a light lunch so we only had one other dish - a novel offering of pan fried pumpkin and prawn dumpling. It too was delicious and the pumpkin and prawn filling were delicately sweet and very tasty. I'm looking forward to a return visit...
Brian Eats
Love this place. Xiao long bao, prawn and pumpkin dumplings, and soft shell crab with red curry are the highlights. Every dish that comes out and goes past looks and smells great. Love that you can see into the kitchen - they have a very thorough cleaning process which is reassuring. Service is a bit lacking but who cares.

CBD Dumpling House at the bottom of the Canberra Centre, is very popular and busy, even weeknights. It offers many of the favourite dishes from the well known, well loved sister Dickson Dumpling House, that are well sized and well priced. There’s a range of banquet options that include great choices, making ordering easy and quick. (A minimum of 5 people)...
Philtskier
Great service polite staff great dumplings. We booked for 7.30pm Thursday night and when we arrived there was probably 12 people waiting for a seat at the door. The restaurant was full. We were shown to our table and promptly given menus and water. We ordered the BBQ buns, pork dumplings fried and sweet and sour pork. The BBQ buns had plenty of BBQ pork in them and were huge - three in a serving and we started to feel full. The pork dumplings were great, the mince was tasty, not burnt, and there was soy and vinegar on the table so we enjoyed them. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio which was reasonably priced. The staff were very attentive, and polite. The S&S pork was great probably the best I have had as the pork was juicy, and the batter not too dry and sauce was great, not too many onions. Would we return yes - cost was reasonableand in line with Melbourne prices.

I love it,this is good of high quailty. I can't believe I've given all other dumpling houses my money, the one in dickson is way over rating ,there's one belconnen which is good but this place is special - I was really annoyed that my bill was put in my table half way through the meal, where I come from you ask for the bill and especially not mid meal ,

Truly AWFUL service: the manager acts like a bullying prison guard not a waiter. The service at this restaurant is APPALLING! The first time my wife and I arrived for an early dinner, smiling cheerfully and very much looking forward to some authentic Asian food. <br/><br/>The waiter ignored our friendly hello and simply thrust the menu at us and left us. Five minutes later he returned and barked at us for not having ordered. My wife tried to politely ask him a question about the menu. In response he waved his arm aggressively at her and shouted "CAN'T YOU READ MENU?". We tried to ask if someone else could perhaps help us, but he barked "NO! BUSY! ORDER NOW OR LEAVE" and then stormed away. We quietly placed our orders, then ate and left.<br/><br/>A week later we returned. Why did we return to the same restaurant? Because my wife and I were at a conference in Canberra for a week; we wanted fresh and quickly served Asian food of the type we're accustomed to in our Surry Hills in Sydney neighbourhood. We were prepared to give this place a second go, hoping that the awful waiter would have been sacked by now.<br/><br/>Sadly, the second occasion was just as bad. We strolled in at 9:20pm, after a long and tiring day, aware that the restaurant would be closing at 10pm. The restaurant was half empty, as people were leaving. As we stood waiting for a table the same waiter walked up and shouted "NO TABLES!". This was clearly false, as there were at least 10 free tables, and we politely pointed this out.<br/><br/>"THEN SIT! AND HURRY UP! ", he yelled. We sat, but he failed to bring us a menu. After about 5 minutes we waved at him. He marched over and bellowed "WHAT DO YOU WANT NOW?". Um, a menu please? He marched over to the counter, returned and literally bashed the menu down on the table and glared. <br/><br/>If we were not so hungry and tired, and if there were other options at 9:30pm in Canberra, we would have walked out. But we needed food, so we placed our order quickly.<br/><br/>Later I asked one of the lovely female waitresses if the man is always so horrible. She nodded, almost tearfully. It made us realise that the waiter is not just awful to customers but also a complete bully to the staff.<br/><br/>Was the food any good? No, it was very ordinary. This restaurant would not survive in Sydney or Melbourne. <br/><br/>I hope someone ends up levying a bullying charge against the male waiter, because his behaviour is completely inappropriate.
Emma Lutton
My favourite!. Literally the best dumplings in Canberra hands down. Probably the best dumplings I've had ever in fact. My best friend and I come at least once a week. The pan fried chicken dumplings are to die for! :) Couldn't recommend this place enough!

Great Value. Went with five friends after the movies. Ordered the $20 Banquet. This was the best value Chinese banquet ever. Service was spedy, food delivered piping hot, Banquet consisted of Spring Rolls, Dumplings, Rice, Three main dishes followed by ice cream. More than enough to eat. Looking through other reviews am wondering if we just hit on a good night so mean to try it again very soon.<br/><br/><br/>-----09 Jan, 2015-----<br/><br/>Great Valid. Food OK. Far too noisy.. Food and service OK, even at peak times. But far too noisy. Even at a small table of 6 people, impossible to carry on a conversation. Please install sound-absorbent ceiling panels.

Bad dumplings. Anyone who has ever had a good dumpling would be disappointed here. The dumpling skins are too thick and hard. And the other items are cheap and nasty.

Underwhelming... first and last visit for lunch. Experienced difficulties in receiving table service. An abundance of staff on floor, very dedicated to clearing tables with big plastic tubs and resetting in the usual fashion. Unfortunately they were ignoring the very reason a business survives - the customers. Bear in mind this was toward the end of lunch service too, what's the rush? <br/><br/>Ordered duck pancakes and a range of boiled dumplings. Duck portions were tasty, tho not overly generous in size. Dumplings easily described as plain, very average in taste. Nothing particularly wrong with them, just far from impressive. A bit sceptical about the chilli sauce. (had to ask for soy and chilli - this seemed yet another effort for the service staff) Mixed two teaspoons full in a small dish of soy and not very hot. Not sure what's going on there... Came from an unmarked squeeze bottle, presumably filled from bulk. <br/><br/>An extensive menu with plenty of options. Wouldn't rule out trying mains for dinner if business practices improve over time. <br/><br/>Overall an average experience. Served it's purpose for being in a convenient Civic location. Will travel further next time for lunchtime dumpling delights.

Really and I mean really! A.... Really and I mean really!<br/>Arrogant staff, don't appreciate the visuals across the restaurant advising close at ten o'clock GET OUT!! Food if you are in a hurry 5/10 want to catch up with friends 3/10. All I can nicely say is fast paced, i.e eat and f&$k off and as soon as you order pay will NEVER return to CBD Dumpling House overall 2/10
Ddmmcc
Would never return. We eat out a lot and tonight at the Dumpling House for the first time we ordered meals and a pot of tea for two based on the $2.00 per person charge. Another guest from our party asked to try the tea so we asked for an empty clean cup. The waitress bought a cup to the table and we were charged and extra $2.00 and no additional tea was delivered.<br/><br/>Last time we'll ever go there. As an aside the food was good value.

Wouldn't bother- rude and disappointing. Knowing how long the wait can be there (were once told over 2hrs!!!) we made a booking for dinner to eat here. Arrived at the restaurant to have a number of wait staff walk around us and no one come up and actually greet us. Waitress finally came up to us and barked "reservation". I have actually never encountered such rude wait staff. She couldn't find us on the reservation sheet or the book, turns out despite spelling out our name and leaving a phone number they hadn't bothered to write down the reservation. Not actually sure what the point of making a reservation is if they don't actually write it down. Needless to say I will not be going there again.

Good Food for a Good Price. After a little mix up with our table reservation, we were seated by friendly staff.<br/>Place has a big menu so is sure to have something for everyone. Quick service for a place that is always so busy, even though it is busy we never felt like we were being pushed out of the restaurant to make way for other customers to come and dine.<br/>We found the food delicious and were very happy with the price as well.<br/>Would recommend this to anyone, but is a busy and loud place so maybe not a place for date night.

I love the open spacious feeling of this place, even though it's always pretty full. The menu's large with lots of interesting dishes from which to choose. Duck spring rolls are good, but often seem to arrive a bit late for a starter. The mixed dumplings are great, and there are some unusual regional Chinese dishes hidden away in the menu. Sambol veggies are very nice, as are beans with mixed pork. I keep going back to try more things. Worth a visit (or two). Service is friendly and quick.

Service is good but taste below average.. You can see through the kitchen and makes customer relieved. Inside of the restaurant looks sanitary and good but whenever people open the front. Door, it freeze everything around there. I ordered fried rice and shanghai pork bun but shanghai pork dumpling's skin was not fresh. They must be re-cooked. Inside was cold and skin was too hard.6 pieces,9$, bit pricy, too. Fried rice took too long, couldnt wait, then left the restaurant. When you find new Chinese restaurant, better to order only two things, which is fried rice and dumplings. If there is any problems with these two choice, unfortunately you can't expect that much. People who's working in there was very nice.

Really Delish vegetarian boiled dumplings! It's insanely busy here & the service is quick! In & put in under an hour! Seriously yummy dumplings!

Terrible! As a Chinese person, I would never recommend that anyone come here unless they're looking for overpriced, unauthentic food. The menu is a bizarre melange of Shanghainese, Cantonese, Malaysian, and who knows what else, which is all the more strange because a place that calls itself a dumpling house should be predominantly Shanghainese. To top it off, we ate here on a public holiday and got charged a "public holiday surcharge" of $2 per person. Never coming back here again!

Great B'Day Celebration. For a relatively new venue, it was a really happening place. Our party of 5 booked ahead to celebrate my son's B'day.<br/><br/>I had read previous reviews but nothing beats taste~testing for yourself. We were seated directly under the Buddha/Prayer Altar which impressed us. Offering of fruit like Banana was on display.<br/><br/>Eat, Drink, Make Merry and Get Lucky are the primary tenets of being Chinese. So we got off to a great start.<br/><br/>Huge menu. My sister, visiting from Melbourne, asked a lot of questions. Which hand~made noodles available, which dish tastes better. The young waitress was very attentive and informative.<br/><br/>Water and glasses were delivered , Pronto. We had a bottle of red to share whilst perusing the menu.<br/><br/>Everybody ordered a dish. Rice for three.<br/><br/>1. Combination Boiled Dumplings<br/>2. Soft Shell Crab (Salt+Pepper)<br/>3. Handmade Noodles (combination of Chicken, beef, pork and veggies).<br/>4. Combination Hot Pot<br/>5. Five Spice Braised Beef (THE BEST!!)<br/>6. Sizzling Tea Roast Duck<br/>7. Shanghai Pork Dumpling<br/><br/>Alright, I think Michelle ordered at least 3 dishes (for her hubby, of course). Both are big foodies.<br/><br/>The table is rather small to accommodate the amount of food we ordered. Lucky we are a family with the Living Motto : "See Food, Will Demolish".<br/><br/>The orders came thick and fast. We were up to the CHALLENGE of savouring it all. I asked for freshly chopped Chilli and that was quickly provided.<br/><br/>A HOLDER with Soy and Chiili sauce condiments, forks and spoons (for those unaccustomed to eating with Chopsticks) is placed at each end of the table.<br/><br/>We ate, drank and yarned happily while the empty serving plates etc get cleared quickly to make room for the next yummy dish.<br/><br/>Overall, food was delicious. The Tea Smoked Roast Duck was not to my liking.<br/>It was a little tough. I don't like chewing food for too long before ingesting.<br/><br/>Dumplings are freshly made without MSG, so don't compare them to the ones at Yum Cha. I love spicy, tasty food. So CBD Dumplings are rather too bland for me.<br/><br/>Noodles? So scrumptious I would have them any time, any day. The real revelation dish was the Soft Shell Crabs. It was so delicious, I wish we had ordered 2 of, instead of the Duck.<br/><br/>The Braised Beef (something so simple) won all our hearts. It was delicate and so tasty. And in case you are wondering, the Red goes wonderfully with our meal.<br/><br/>Verdict: We came, We saw, We Ate+Drank, We Conquered all the dishes ordered. Nothing was left languishing. CBD, yes. We shall return to check out the rest of the very big menu.<br/><br/>The Joy, Luck Club of Dining Out: Another Eating mission accomplished!<br/><br/>psst: Don't forget to Check Out the 'Money Cat' at the Reception. Press its Buzzer, Insert a $1 coin in the slot. Voila! Tip for the waitress. Both Michelle and I had fun with the Cat. And, placing $10 in the Tip Glass.<br/><br/>It's a Chinese Restaurant where making your own luck is important after all. Enjoy the food, talk loudly. Make Merry. Don't be so precious and critical. Remember, It's not a place to make impressions on State Managers. Just a joyous place to dine.<br/><br/>As for Gluten~intolerant diners, pack your own survival pack next time. Or just order some Rabbit Food and be done with it. Creating a scene is so disrespectful to business owners and fellow diners.<br/><br/>Remember: We are all EQUALS. No one is really that different or special.<br/><br/>CBD, WE SHALL RETURN! We promise.<br/><br/>Relax and Live TO EAT ANOTHER DAY...

AWFUL SERVICE. Went to the CBD Dumpling House which was booked for a work function - we had state managers from all capital cities at the dinner. The venue is terribly noisy and not good if you actually need to communicate at the table without yelling. The Service was appalling, we had a person who is gluten intolerant, apparently nothing on the menu was gluten free, after a lot of arguing and discussion they finally agreed to create a dish with just prawns and vegetables, however we were charged double the price of other dishes on the menu. We were having a banquet however the dessert was just ice cream and topping we asked if this could be replaced with the fried ice cream and we would pay the difference (which in actual fact was only $1 as per the menu), they refused to accommodate us and the only way we could get our choice was to pay an additional dessert for every person on top of the full cost of the banquet. Food was OK. Would not go back very rude staff and non accommodating.

Great food. My team went there the other week and we had the $25 banquet meal. The food was fantastic....my favourite was the shredded beef. Probably the best I have ever had. The honey prawns were also fantastic, lightly batted, fresh...just delicious. <br/><br/>We are all going back again....

So, so Chinese restaurant. Nothing special about this place. Pan fried dumplings were tasty but lacked in presentation. Noodle soup had overcooked mushy noodles. Sizzling wood smoked duck boring pile of duck slices with gloopy sauce and some fresh tomato pieces and steamed broccoli sitting beside it. But my wife is Chinese and we've been to China, so perhaps our standards are too high...

CBD Dumpling House opened up a couple of weeks ago at the Canberra Centre. Another new restaurant in the North Quarter after Jamie's Italian , Papparich and Hero Sushi . I absolutely love dumplings so I headed in for a weekday lunch with my partner. The entrance is in between two buildings (at Scott's Crossing), just up from the pedestrian crossing between Nando's and Grill'd. You can see into the kitchen from the street and the row of professional looking dumpling-makers. The restaurant is quite spacious inside and has a modern, clean and sleek look. Stools line the large kitchen windows where you can watch the chefs do their thing. I like the Asian-style lanterns hanging down. The counter along the middle, holding tap water and other items, splits the space into two areas. We were seated in the back half. Menus bound in a nice looking folder were provided, however the good ol' plastic sleeves are inside holding quite a lot of food items from dumplings, soups, noodles, and hot pots, t
Little Lauren's Adventures
I can hear what you are asking, Lauren, where have you been!? I know right, seriously slacking over the last two weeks. Part of the reason at least is that I have not been at home! Well. I have been at home but just on boring days like Monday – Friday. When not at home I’ve been visiting loved ones across the country and you know, eating, of course. So may I recommend: CBD Dumpling House, Canberra: I had a little giggle at this restaurant when we first drove by. The Sydney snob in me didn’t think there was a CBD in Canberra, but geographical knowledge aside I first spied this place when Harry and I got stuck in the carpark next door and it’s been on my to try list! FINALLY, three months later, I have had the pleasure of being squeezed in without a booking for a quickie, oooohhh yeah. It was really lovely to get something of a quality in Canberra that I would compare to some of my favourite dumpling houses at home, having had some disappointing experiences with Chinese food nearby. Tales Of A Confectionist
Without taking any chances, I ordered majority of things from my ‘must have’ list with only two new dishes that I haven’t tried before. The dishes come out exceptionally fast which we as why I was hesitant to order until all 6 of us had arrived. Food quickly filled our table and before I could put my camera down, plates were shuffled around to accommodate the next dish. It was
