A hidden gem. I identified with so many of the Aussies portrayed in the paintings. This is a 'must visit' to for those on the Canberra tourist trail. Free underground parking on weekends and a great little café!

What a gem! Intended to visit for a few minutes but stayed a few hours. The staff were charming and the gift shop was full of interesting things to buy. The portraits and their accompanying stories formed a fascinating history of Australia. Loved it.
We enjoyed a night of wine and music at the launch of the CSO's 2018 season. Well organized and beautiful evening. Lovely venue!
We visited the Gallery on a short stopover in Canberra. What an outstanding collection of paintings and photos representing so many parts of Australian history, life, recognition and achievements. I highly recommend the visit.
Education in pictures. Happily spent a couple of hours reading the story that went with each item, matching some of the names with the suburbs of Canberra. Well worth the visit.
Great portraits of contemporary Australians. Historical figures represented too but with a short time frame just viewd the modern portraits - well worth a visit

The private function at the gallery last night was perfect. The foyer was set out beautifully and the staff provided excellent service - could not fault.
Wonderful memorabilia from many Australian classic movies. The guided tour provided tremendous insight. A must see for any Australian who loves the movies.

Thoroughly enjoyed drifting through the various rooms. There seems to be a more balanced male /female exhibition than in the past. Well done.

Unfortunately missed out on the mains, the kitchen closes around 2:30pm although it doesn’t state it anywhere, so only what’s on display in the windows is available to eat, we had a lamb sausage roll and the scones. The sausage roll was quite large with a good amount of filling. The staff were friendly but it would be good if when people arrived after 2:30 they advised the kitchen was closed as we saw multiple people taking a while to decide on their mains then go to order and find out they’re no longer serving. Otherwise, it’s clean and good food and there are plenty of seating options both inside and outside, would recommend it for a pit stop whilst browsing the gallery or if nearby.
Very tasty food and quick service. We ordered Pumpkin bowl with smoked trout and Salmon sandwich. Both were delicious and filling. Will definitely recommend. Polite staff.
Got a seat on a busy Easter weekend! The way the QR code works for ordering is truly efficient. If you're bringing your family bring wads of cash stashed in your digital compiler. Food isn't exactly generous but does have some semblance to flavour. Although on second thought the use of frozen pizza and a deep fryer seems a bit slack for a place that's meant to be a premier venue for the nation of Australia. Wonderful view of the High Court and the grounds around Lake Burley Griffin, well kempt and nice on a sunshine early winters Canberra day.
Great cafe with great food and drinks. They have a good range of options depending on your tastes. Had breakfast here and it was quality food served by great staff. Highly recommend if you are going to the Portrait Gallery or in the area. Note that there is a 10% surcharge for Sunday.
Lovely cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. It is an order and pay at the counter affair and the queue can be quite long. There were some delicious looking pies, quiches and pastries with vegan/vegetarian options. The coffee is ok - not great but the staff seem friendly and helpful. My fruit salad and vegan yogurt was very tasty.
I’ve been back with a bigger appetite recently after a lake walk and my pumpkin and goats cheese tart was delicious. The lentil and carrot soup was also good according to a fellow walker. I love that the Portrait Gallery gift shop is so close though could be dangerous if you don’t want to spend. I did come away with a few gifts. 💕🌸💕
Burnt Basque Cheesecake & sausage roll is good! Quite pricey items though.
