Review Hopscotch Bar Braddon - Canberra

Just stopped in for a couple of drinks before dinner. We loved the beer garden area and industrial look of the inside area. Nice cocktail menu ($15-20 mostly), for those interested in that kind of thing. I can recommend the Coco loco. However, it did take a while for the cocktails to be delivered to the table. This is a great spot for big groups. They have a huge indoor area with long tables and heaters if you're sitting outside.

Came here tonight from Melbourne, sitting on table number 78, we ordered a round of drinks, after one hour of waiting we came up to the bar to ask for them and they literally say they gave them to us, it’s been 1 hour and 15 minutes and they keep saying it’s 5 minutes away. Absolutely bad service. I work in hospo, you lose the dockets sometimes, but when something like this happens you guys shall care and prioritise it. Never coming back again.

Not family friendly. Drinks were expensive. Female waitress looked like she rolled out of bed and didn't want to be there on a Sunday evening. Couldn't crack a smile when delivering our meal. Pizza was bland. Steak was ok, but definitely not what we paid for. And the garlic bread ain't garlic bread, more like garlic pizza. Very disappointing.

Find somewhere else ! the table chairs and floor were sticky and not clean, the menu and table numbers were the same, the staff good and pleasant . The publican need to have a hard look at the premises and the cleanliness. could be a lot better

Hopscotch used to be the new kid on the block back in like 2015, and now it's a well recognised Canberra institution. HOPS/ SCOTCH is not just a place for beers & whiskey, it's an expansive gastropub where you can enjoy a quiet arvo drink. Like Assembly down the road, it has a chameleon like quality. Hopscotch suddenly fills up with people who appear out of nowhere, which transforms it into a rowdy bar. The live music is too loud, Canberra is cold, the heaters are hot, the pub grub is mediocre. Supposedly the bartender looks like someone from MAFS?

Rudest customer service by all interactions with multiple wait staff. Kicked off our table with nil reserved signs or polite communication to our table. Nil resolution provided by staff. Appalling service. 0/10.

While visiting War Memorial, we are looking for a nice and cheap food nearby. We found this place, Hopscotch (on Lonsdale Street) They offered the meal deal for $5 pizza (but U have plus a extra drink with this deal) and $10 chicken schnitzel. The food is great and fresh. Pizza paste is thin, tasty. The chicken schnitzel is beautiful and lovely, it's real one, not like factory ones. The paper corn sauce is good. The chip is very crispy. I think it's very good quality and good value, not like those terrible cheap food with no tasty. I give it 4 out of 5 base on quality and value (CP). Suggestion: The waiter should greetings when the customer walking into and tell the customers the special deal before they ask.

Hopscotch has to be one the most talked about pubs of Canberra. A must go to I was told by locals. Unfortunately I didn't see for myself what all the hype about this place was. It did has a good atmosphere but staff where not very helpful. The food we ordered was of good quality but fairly overpriced for pub food. I did like that there was games available for guest to play while enjoying a drink or two :)

Not the craft beer spot I was expecting, only had 5 craft brews on tap so limited selection, the one I had was only ok. Place was packed and pumping, obviously a spot for 20 something year olds based on the crowd. Ended up heading over to Bentspoke instead for a wider selection of craft brews.

Nice outdoor area with random games and live tunes. 50 cent wings on a Sunday, which were saucy AF and delicious, 10/10. The calamari was tender and well cooked, but oily and not super flavoursome. Prob won’t be back, unless I lived in Canberra and was craving wings on a Sunday.

Great atmosphere with tables set-up for dinner that are later moved to make room for a dance floor.

Cocktails aren’t the cheapest around but they make up for it with different events on different nights like Tranny Bingo and the infamous Dildo Racing.
Can see why this place is still around compared to other restaurants that have failed.

No complaints for a recent dinner here. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating - great for group gatherings. Ordered at the counter and my meal came out almost instantly. Couldn't fault the meal and the portion size was generous. Only thing I would change are the chips being served under the chicken schnitzel, it made it all soft - served to the side would be great. I wouldn't mind coming back again!

Great atmosphere, friendly service! Hopscotch delivered fresh and such tasty mussels! So impressed! The calamari was also tender and scrumptious! If I lived in Canberra I would be here often!

Modern style bar with a huge indoor area with high tables and stools (reminded my husband of a school gym) and decent size outdoor area at the front with umbrellas and outdoor heaters.
We found it odd that there was no advertisement of beer physically on the taps - they were all just wooden handles. This venue is a 1min walk across the road from the food truck / trailer park area.

Stopped by here for a couple of drinks on Saturday night post dinner. The place was busy, but not packed out. We got a table inside ordered our drinks & settled in, but about 20 mins in got asked by the staff to move as the table is now reserved (there was no sign on it when we sat down), the staff didn't even attempt to help us find another table. Lucky for us another table was just leaving. The cocktails we ordered were a bit hit & miss, best to stick with the classics and bypass their special infusions.

Regular readers will know how I love a good burger – and pickles, I’m a sucker for pickles. So it’s no surprise that I’m always willing to try the burger on the menu, which is exactly what I did when we holed up at Hopscotch on a particularly chilly afternoon. Which burger, I hear you ask? The specials menu offered a pulled beef burger with wholegrain mustard and pickles. Sold. The food took a surprisingly long time to come out, given how quiet the place was, but when it did the plate was packed full of chips (and there was plenty of burger too). The fries here are great – thin and generally crisp (I reckon they could have been in for a tad longer this time around) they’re also nicely seasoned – very moreish. The burger was

It might be known more for being a bar rather than a restaurant, however, Hopscotch still serves up an acceptable meal. I opted for the pork belly and I find myself teetering on the fence about the meal. The pork was tender, the vegetables were crispy and the mash worked well as a bedding for the two, however, everything could have been cooked just that little bit better.

I'd rather wait 5 minutes longer and receive a crispy pork belly rather than a soft fatty exterior (which was the case here). I'd also prefer freshly prepared potato mash, rather than lukewarm mash obviously prepared earlier in the day.

Never eaten here as always too crowded for my liking. A nice spot to have a couple of quiet ones before moving on. Looks to be very popular as there is always a queue outside.

Good combo of great beer and decent food. Probably not at debacle standards yet but staff are friendly and happy to take you through the beers, only tried a couple of dishes off the menu which were quick and good for what is essentially a pub.
Top atmosphere and a seat outside under umbrella with fan and water spray is a must for a post work summer beer

Chicken Schnitzel deal $13 chips and salad plus a beer - absolutely fantastic deal. Try the chocolate brownie as well. Not a fan of the rum and raisin ice cream but the choc b is one of the best in town. Overall the food is really good and the stakes are reasonably priced, especially when compared to an overpriced chain that many people may have heard of (Hogsbreath). The service is great and I'm happy to call Hopsotch my local with a friendly twist.

Music is very very loud - you can't even have a conversation with your friends. Food is ok (pub food), service is quite friendly. Accepts Amex.

Small serves. Ordered the Hamburger $18.
The beer was ok.
The hamburger size very very small (possibly slider size) and came with a mountain of thin (possibly frozen) fries.
Hopscothch be fair and call this a childs meal.
Adults do not want to fill up on cheapo bland fries.
Staff were great.

Stuck in the middle. Hopscotch. Awesome name. Awesome play ground (where else has giant jenga & connect4)? Food is good, but desire to eat there is somewhat dampened by the price: I want a nice lunch, but I can get it somewhere else for

Great tucker & wine. We ha.... Great tucker & wine.
We had a group of seven out fare welling a friend. We had a variety of meals from Morroccan Lamb to Lamb Backstrap, Beef Brisket & Chicken Burger - all the crew loved their food. Quality, flavours, quantity were all fantastic. We tried a number of the wines & smooth as. And the staff were great.

Great atmosphere. The Argentinian brisket was amazing and worth going back for. The service was inconsistent - great when we were there but booking a table was a drama. Don't rely on the online functions - it is not checked or used by the staff and causes more problem than it's worth. I would love to go back there sometime.

Disappointing food service. I was disappointed by the service for dinner. Although we went there with a large group, we did book and preordered our food. It was also a week night. Unfortunately, the preordered meal did not come out until 1 and half hours after we arrived and we could see people who had arrived later getting their meals. At the end of the night we were told that several people hadn't paid for their preordered meals, however it was unclear from the dockets whether this was correct. So we spent at least 30 mins trying to figure it all out. The restaurant claimed I hadn't paid for my meal and the only way I could prove it was finding the waiter who had processed my payment and getting him to verify that I had paid. It was a frustrating end to the night.

Not sure what others ordered that were such small portions, I've been here 4x now and like it. Ordered typically pub food items off the menu (schnitty, Parma, burger) and they were all great. Pacific beer on top is also great not fan of the other beers but swings and roundabouts. Much prefer the food here to bent spoke up the road. I'd guess the cuisine is a few notches above typical gastro pub dude food. 7.5/10

Overpriced, average food with small servings. The one redeeming thing is the beers.. I'll start with the positives - it looks reasonably cool and I like the idea of the large open area out the front for the summer. The beers they have on tap are also really good, so it might be a good place to go just to get a beer, but my advice is to not order any food at all.

I went with several friends, and some of us had the jerk chicken, and others had the burger. Both were just a bit average. Nothing great, nothing awful about them, but with smoque and brodburger in Canberra, I have no idea why you would go to this place to order a burger. The wings and the calamari were the most outrageously overpriced things - $14 for 5 wings which were much worse than the wings you can get at Smoque (where 6 wings are $8.90). I cannot understand how they can possibly justify charging almost twice as much for fewer wings, which are far worse. The calamari came with heaps of salad, but only about 5 pieces of calamari, so that was another $15 down the drain.

As I said though, the beers were good (whereas neither Smoque nor brodburger have any really good, hoppy IPAs). I would come back for a beer, but won't be ordering food again. Unless this place lowers its prices, or seriously improves the quality and size of its food offerings, it will surely be out of business in 6 months once the novelty of having a new place that looks pretty cool wears off. I want it to succeed though, as I like the concept, and was very excited to go here when I first saw it.

Terrible and not slow cooked.. Ordered the Argentine Slow Cooked Brisket for lunch. Had high hopes for this dish as I enjoy slow cooked meats.

When it came out, it came out cold. It looked cooked but it was not. It was if they had made it days in advance and just took it out of the fridge and then sat it there to warm to room temperature before serving. I'm guessing they forgot to reheat it. I informed the waitress who took it back. The next one that came out was steaming, but steaming more like it had just come out of a microwave. It was just terrible. I did give it a try still. The chimichurri tasted alright from the little bit of it I had, but the brisket was dry and the outer coating just tasted like burnt charcoal. I honestly ate about a quarter of it and just left the rest. I barely touched the soft maize.

The friends I was with ordered burgers, chicken schnitzel, and fish and chips and they all had better experiences. So if you go, absolutely do not get the brisket. It. is. terrible.

Let me also say, as some one who doesn't enjoy 2nd hand smoke, it's not pleasant having to walk through it as you exit out the front gate as that's right where the smokers seem to gather.

Started with the Buffalo wings, nice mild spice with a nice ranch sauce. Came out relatively quick on, shortly followed with our mains.
I ordered the Rib Eye medium rare, came out medium well. The cut was chewy and tough to get through, however nice smokey flavors. Priced $36, I would expect better quality better cooked meal. Overpriced for what it is. Felt a bit ripped off.
Friend ordered the pork, Kim Chi wasn't Kim Chi, however very tasty coleslaw. Stalks of raw unwashed shallots for a garnish a bad touch to finish.
Not a bad experience overall, but some fine tuning needed. Raise the quality of the or drop the prices.

I had Korean BBQ Pork boulgolgi apparently served with kimchi slaw. There was no kimchi and was badly kimchi spiced cabbage. The atmosphere was nice modern bar style with loud music which wasn't the metronomic pop heard on the radio, though the prices are too high. I agree with the person who said "decide if you're a bar or restaurant" pork was lovely little sweet for me but still good.

Lunch not so good. Settled in for lunch after ordering - 25 minutes later my partners burger arrived a full 20 minutes after that it steak arrived. Ordered rare - it was medium to well done. The potatoes tried in duck butter were raw and crunchy - so much potential - but fail.

Great vibe, average food, average wine list, average service..... Very disappointed with the BBQ Pork Bulgolgi with Kimchi Slaw which was like being served 3 bits of fat on a plate after you scrape all the sauce off. Altogether not convinced with the freshness of the produce. You can see the 'Elk and Pea' influence coming through in the food which I was never convinced about. My friend's dish did not feel genuine mexican and in the case of my main course korean.... Also disappointed with the wine list. Agree with below comments that the vibe is a bit off. There needs to be more co-ordination and understanding about whether it is self-serve, table service etc. If it is meant to be something for everyone then the drinks list must also accommodate for that. Also, very inconvenient for everyone to keep cutlery outside the kitchen where all the waiters are trying to serve food from. I will give it another go though.

Decide if you're a bar or a restaurant. Nice place. Great atmosphere. A few good beers at reasonable, by Canberra, and especially Braddon standards, prices. Expensive and rather disappointing food (really basic schnitzels and parmas at inflated prices). Walked in at 5:30pm on a Wednesday with some friends and struggled to find a table that wasn't reserved. After having a few drinks we were told to move on - and not in a nice way - because our table was reserved at 7pm. Left a bad taste and we probably won't go back. What's the point? Saw another table of 6 moved on to be replaced by 4. Seems like a stupid business model that just annoys patrons. Are you a pub or a restaurant? If the latter then you need to improve your food. I could see this being a Friday regular if not for this idiotic policy. Thing is, you can do what you like while the place is new and trendy, I suppose, but it might be a good idea to leave a few tables for people who just drop in. That's Braddon. I'd like to give you a "like" but not if you're going to kick us out.

Friday Night. First visit, nice place, very noisy, food disappointing, They pride themselves on their imported grill which is awesome and most of the food is cooked on it. They have kimchi with some of their dishes, it is a Korean favourite side dish of fermented chili cabbage, however they wouldn't let us have any as a side dish. The kitchen won't do it they explained, strange I thought so rather than 2 steaks we had 1 to share and see what it was like. Unfortunately vastly overcooked and the herb butter that came with it did not fit the smokey flavor of the meat. Good waiting and bar staff, I wouldn't be in any hurry to go back for another steak though.

Relaxed vibe, yummy food (but small portions), good drink selection. A good little local!

Great atmosphere, great vibe

Overtly industrial and lacking individual character, good for large groups, average food small servings.

Hopscotch will be hosting Sunday sessions with a whole pig/s roasting outdoors. Ahh this is going to be great in summer! I like the large mural outside above the BBQ pit where I'm assuming the whole pig on a spit will be roasted. The Canberra Times reports the mural was created by a 16 year old street artist. Green foliage peeks through above the bi-fold windows providing a glimpse of nature before opening up onto the beer garden in the warmer months.

Hopscotch has a permanent spit where they apparently roast pigs and other goodies every now and then. I haven’t seen it in action but I think in a few more weeks it will be perfect, warm nights spent watching a suckling pig rotating on Hopscotch’s spit and munching away on charred Argentinian spiced deliciousness.

Hopscotch is on to a most excellent start as far I’m concerned. The food was exceptional and the service and the vibe were fantastic. I am aware that I have not reviewed the hop or the scotch aspects of the bar but I feel that’s best left to the experts. I have no doubt come the weekend this place will be packed to the brims and deservingly so. If you are a group of six or more they do take bookings but Brian wants to encourage walk-in customers so fear not, they are only taking a certain number of bookings each night so drop in for a drink and make sure you try something from the Argentine grill.
Food Avenue
The newest bar in Canberra has a playful and funky name and a cool neon sign near the street (presumably so you don’t miss it). Located on Lonsdale st, where a car dealership, a hair salon and a fishing tackle store used to be, Hopscotch bar serves beer (hops), scotch, and wood-fired food.

My favourite aspect of Hopscotch, however, is the imported wood-fired Argentinian grill found in the kitchen. It is a beast. My colleagues and I sat inside, at a table that overlooked the kitchen and Argentinian grill. We mentioned that it would be extremely hot in the kitchen, with the open flames close to where the chefs are working. Deb and I ordered the lamb souva, featuring lamb cooked on the Argentinian grill, hummus, greek salad, feta, tzatziki and house made flat bread ($18), served with shoestring fries and garlic mayo. The serving size of the souva was huge and we loved the soft, warm flat bread and the tender, flavoursome lamb. We were definitely impressed. Astrid ordered the Fish and Chips ($22) – stone wood pale ale battered fish, tartare sauce and her choice of chips and salad (with potato mash and grilled vegetables also available) for her sides. Astrid proclaimed that the fish and chips were the best she’s found in Canberra, and I was lucky enough to be offere
