Review A Bite To Eat - Canberra

Thien Vuong (fooderarri)
The drinks here are quite satisfying and fries were good, burger was average, but the risotto was undercooked and the arborio rice was so hard and ruined the taste of the risotto. I also felt the seasoning wasn't right and it tasted a bit bland. A bit disappointing experience given the high reviews given by the public. Yours truly @fooderarri

Lots of room inside and out, seems to be very kid and dog friendly but is big enough that you could it away from them too. Food wasn't too long and was delicious. Coffee was decent but the staff didn't have any idea about the beans so it's not for coffee lovers. I asked for a dessert which I saw in the windows which I never received and was sold when I asked about it again.

Good food and service. I tried Chilli eggs and Cappuccino. Everything was really flavoursome. Definitely recommend it.

As a meat eater that loves lots of flavour via yummy sauces, cheeses, seasoning while going light on the (healthy) vegetable and salad side, A Bite To Eat wasn't my cup of tea but I'm damn sure they're somebody else's. We ordered the chicken burger and stake sandwich (we were after some battered fish but only pickled salmon on the menu). In short A Bite To Eat is a vegetarians paradise and I'm sure perfectly suited to such tastes bit for the meat eater, expect to be out of your comfort zone. Juices were amazing, chips were fantastic, coffee was OK.

We visited this Cafe for a private function and it was superb. They served a wide, and plentiful, range of finger foods that were all?delicious. The function had an open bar tab and a number of waitresses and ancillary staff who were all really switched on and very pleasant. Probably the best of this type of function that we have attended.

Good place for lunch, all staff are really friendly šŸ˜Š

Came highly recommended by a mate and we weren't disappointed. Really nice staff, good wholesome atmosphere. Nice coffee and food. Nothing more I could want in a breakfast spot.

It used to be better. There was this random, eclectic collection of furniture that made it feel a bit Boho and Melbourne alleyway-esque. It's all been replaced with standard cafe furniture and has lost its edge a little. However, service is friendly and the coffee is on point. Get the B&E roll, it's good!

Just ate there to test out new vegan dishes they advertise. We received exceptionally poor service. Staff seemed confused as to how food was prepared and all the ingredients included in our meals. Wife ordered avo toast assuming it would be vegan, but it had butter on it--which we found strange, because we thought of the avo as a substitute for butter. But we should have asked about the toast, so that one is on us. However, my food just okay and everything I ordered was drowning in oil. Also, I didn't receive all the food I ordered. When I told the guy at the register, he was completely unapologetic and made no attempt to accommodate my poor service. He did, however, remove those missing items from my bill. So I don't recommend this place for anyone, but particularly if you are vegan. If you are vegan, just don't bother. Go to one of the many great vegan places around Canberra (e.g., Sweet Bones, Au Lac)

We have eaten at A Bite to Eat a number of times, but Saturday night was the first time we had booked it for a private function. Could not recommend it highly enough! From the start Steven was easy to deal with and helpful. The food was delicious and there was plenty of it. The staff were friendly, courteous and efficient and everything went very smoothly. Will definitely book the venue for future events. ļæ½ļæ½

Absolutely love this place! The food is amazing, staff super friendly and the atmosphere more than welcoming. Highly recommend for a place to catch up with friends or family.

We just had brunch to try out the new owners and food. The food was amazing, all 3 of us enjoyed our meals. 2 had the zucchini stacks and one the smashed avo. Service was excellent. Foid was prompt. Coffee was great. Had the maple chai and loved it. So good as made with real chai tea not the powdered stuff. We ended up being there for 3 hrs, never bothered by staff. Was very pleasant and will go back to being on of our favourite places. Thanks. Can't wait to try the lunch menu all the food coming out looked yummy

I absolutely love the atmosphere and the querkiness of this CafĆØ. The staff are always friendly and helpful, plus the selection, flavours and the presentation of the meals are always top notch. Yesterday we arrived at midday for lunch in the sunny courtyard, then moved indoors for yummy big mugs of hot chocolate. We were there for 5 hours in total workout being rushed to move on or vacate our table. I highly recommend A Bite to Eat to anyone, even dog's are accommodated in the back courtyard ļæ½

Had breakfast there a couple of weeks ago the ā€œsmashed avoā€ was amazing best breakfast Iā€™ve had for awhile. Went again on Sunday - live music was great, meat board was as extremely generous and delish will definitely make this a regular venue to enjoy well doneļæ½ļæ½

Thanks to the staff member who elected to give me a huge cookie because it was "the biggest and yummiest looking one there" - lovely staff and good food.

Dear Gregarious Greg and Serious Steve. Thank you for giving us a ā€œourā€ space. For fluffing the pillows on your first visit and encouraging us into our favourite corner spot, for the wine and whisky suggestions, for the chats, the warmth, the welcoming and for bringing us back every time with a smile. We are excited to come back for mulled wine and more far too big mouthfuls of blue cheese (my fault and not a reflection of your beautiful antipasto portion sizing!!) Your gal pals, Sparkly Steph and Jovial Jane ļæ½ļæ½ ā€œAka the giggle girls in the corner asking for the story of how olive trees reproduce and giving you 45 minutes to report backā€.

The meal was the best roast vegetables and salad I've had, my daughter loved her risotto. The staff were friendly and efficient. We will be returning in the near future.

The best coffee South of the lake and likely North of the lake as well. Southern Chicken burger is the best Chicken Burger in Canberra!

Best bacon & egg roll ever! Don't go bacon my heart and keep it on your menu forever. I also cannot espresso my love for the amazing coffee!

Holy shit, what a find! This place is amazing, the food was incredible. So delicious and I was very excited to see such good quality options and a focus on real, nourishing, yummy wholefoods. Great atmosphere, charming staff and I loved sitting in the garden, enjoying my coffee and brekkie with my mates and our dogs! A Bite is an absolute gem. ļæ½

When I wake up the next morning after a meal out the night before with the tastes, atmosphere and service floating through my mind ....wow, A Bite To Eat's new menu is sensational!! New, refreshing and Summery ...try the Lamb Ribs ļæ½

Loving the revamped vibe guys... Fresh new look, fresh new beers and fresh new menu... All winners with me... Pleased to have you in the neighbourhood... Everyone should get down to check it out... Can reccommend the cheesy -- in a good way -- macoroni balls with a cool pint of Bentspoke's GF ginger beer...

Great atmosphere, delicious food and great entertainment. Salad Buoy were such a cool band to listen to. Great music with a perfect volume where I could talk and listen to my friends. Lovely, friendly staff too. Would love to come again when Salad Buoy play and eat your delicious tapas food. Oh and the chips with aoli are THE BEST in Canberra!

Good food, relaxed vibe. Would recommend for a lazy brunch.

As an eggs Benedict connoisseur, I have to say; best Benedict EVER. The charcoal bun just takes it to a whole different level of deliciousness and everything works so well. Big things to come for this awesome joint #FoodComa

Our family went in to A Bite to Eat today for a hot chocolate. We not only ordered our drinks but a huge plate of fat chips with aioli. Both were awesome. We were served by very friendly staff and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I absolutely love the dƩcor. Our cutlery, chairs, china, everything were mismatched and it worked perfectly (even the lights were all different). We'll definitely be back for more fat chips.

I've been coming here for years now, and only just thought to leave a review. I've worked in the hospitality industry as a manager for around a decade now, and have come to realise just how difficult it is for a business to receive positive feedback and good reviews. A customer who enters a premises and has a good experience isn't often motivated to leave a review of any kind, whereas a customer who has a bad experience will froth at the mouth with self-entitled rage and leave a one star review, comment publicly, and tell their friends, before they leave in their Volkswagen tiguan with spit-froth still dangling off their chin. Canberra is a difficult demographic for businesses in hospitality, due in part to Canberra's painfully bourgeois population and the associated expectations with this age and wage group. In my experience, the staff have always been lovely. The food is always top notch and the portion sizes are quite large, which I appreciate greatly. I've never had a bad coffee here. The menu has an excellent range of options which changes from season to season while maintaining a level of consistency so I can always find something that I like.

Great food, attractive staff, quick service. Best breakfast of my life!

Very dissatisfied with food, coffee and some staff who made me feel as soon as I had eaten that we should move on out. Had expected to have a lovely relaxing lunch with my family and left in dismay with regret that we had chosen to have lunch here. I will not ever return after such a disappointing experience.

Very impressed with this cafe. There are plenty of seats both inside and outside. I liked that they had lounge style tables. I am a big fan of my campos coffee and this place does it right! I also had my usual banana bread - I liked that the butter provided was whipped. I will definitely be back again to try their menu.

After waiting over an hour for coffees then an extra half an hour for food .<br/>Our order of avocado eggs on toast and a big breakfast + hollandaise arrived.<br/>Poached eggs came out over cooked to the point they were hard boiled <br/>Hollandaise came out as yogurt , ask the waitress if she Please exchange the sauce as they must of bring out the wrong sauce by accident she very rudely took the yogurt and went to the kitchen came back said thatā€™s ā€œour house hollandaiseā€. The table next to us had eggs benedict with yellow hollandaise not white Greek yogurt.<br/>All of the food came out cold nothing was even warm.<br/><br/>All the lady at the counter could say when we told her was ā€œwere busyā€.<br/>

A must visit if you are ever in Chifley. Full of bright fresh flavor and big portion size! My friend had Rob Smith, whilst I had Ducks in a row.

We had lunch here on recommendation from a local. They didn't have too many vegetarian options but were happy to accommodate. We started with freshly squeezed orange juice with a ginger shot. The juice had quite a strong ginger flavour. <br/><br/>For mains I went for the tortilla with beans and omitted the scrambled eggs. Instead I had a side of mushrooms. My husband ordered the soup of the day which was pumpkin with a slice of sardough. He too ordered mushrooms on the side. The food did take a while to come which was over 20 mins but they were busy too. <br/><br/>Both the meals were good, I would have preferred a salsa with the tortilla to add a bit more flavour. Overall it was a pleasant meal that cost us 34$.

A Bite to Eat is another one of those cafes that Canberra likes to stash away at its local shops. This one is in chiefly, and is cute in a retro kind of way. Homey and bordering on daggy with its Formica tables and mismatched servingware, it's the complete antithesis to the very modern fitouts you see around these days. <br/><br/>I ordered the El Gringo, which is garlic roasted chicken served with a corn and jalapeƱo salsa, sweet potato fries and salad leaves. I didn't really pick up much garlic from the chicken, but it was juicy and well cooked. I thought the salsa might be a bit spicy for a Kylee, so they helpfully offered to serve it on the side. It was within my chili tolerance and the ingredients were fresh if very unevenly chopped. The salad leaves were weighed down by a pretty bland dressing. The best thing about the whole dish were the sweet potato fries - crisped up with some sort of coating, and surprisingly spicy but so addictive. I also ordered a chocolate thickshake which was good but not amazing. Staff were friendly enough but I would have been nice if they'd brought us some more water. <br/><br/>Overall, I felt pretty indifferent about the experience šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø I'd defs eat more potato fries though. In a heartbeat.

It has always offered an eclectic, casual and friendly atmosphere thatā€™s very popular with locals. The lunch menu offers a range of differently sized and priced salad and bread-based meals. The larger meals can beĀ shared and this is a good idea as they can be quite heavy with dressingā€¦ like the Cos and Effect for about $17.90 with Tumut smoked trout, baby cos, crisp beans, cherry tomatoes, dill dressing and boiled egg.

Went in for breakfast, ordered and asked for my coffee to come out first and juice with my meal, juice came out first then had to ask for my coffee to be brought out. Waited 50 minutes for breakfast just to get over cooked poached eggs. Meanwhile a couple that ordered 20 minutes after me got their meals before me. An overall disappointment.

A Bite to Eat is one of my favourite Canberra cafes ā€“ the eclectic vibe here is so relaxed and the food is reliably good. I took Mum for a late lunch one Saturday afternoon. I ordered the ā€˜Mortyā€™, which is part of the all day breakfast menu ā€“ clay-baked meatballs in a spicy, roasted tomato sauce with a poached egg and parmesan. Yum. Unfortunately we werenā€™t told there was a backlog in the kitchen, and after waiting for 45 minutes we were pretty frustrated and hungry. The food took another 10 minutes to come out after that, but, to be fair, both of our meals came together. Topped with crusty toast and a sprinkling of sprouts to lighten what would have otherwise been quite a heavy dish, the serving was actually

One of the hidden gems, local secrets Canberra has to offer. An interesting menu that provides options for vegetarians to meaty and hearty meals. Consistent quality of food and big servings that will ensure you are full and satisfied. Services can be improved as sometime you have to wait a bit longer than usual. Also quirky decorations. They don't serve the same looking cup set twice on your table.

A bite to eat is a great place to grab lunch and venture back in time about 40 or 50 years. On our visit we tried the Wanda, the Mint Condition and a side of chips for good measure. The salad in particular was fresh and delicious, and full of the good bits (ie not padded out with huge amounts of lettuce). Worth a visit.
Ausbeagle
Very nice food (not spectacular but above average), interesting menu and pleasant service. I thought the decor could use some work (it's just too shabby). Had the honey bunch and it was good (but a bit dry) but was covered in fruits which weren't on the menu (and I hate banana). Good serves and value for $$. Will come back to try some other breakfast items.

It's interesting that people have such different experiences of this quirky restaurant - revisited it today, and it was better than ever before. FIgaro, Figaro omelette - with brie and caramelised baby figs was....just beyond words. So I won't attempt any, other than to say it was better than the goat's cheese omelette at the European in Melbourne.

Really wanted to like this place after hearing great reviews from the locals. Unfortunately I was extremely disappointed. The kofta was stone cold, and to top it off I found an actual twig in my food as well. Staff did not do a check on the meals which was disappointing and at the end when we told the waitress how everything was the reply was "oh... You should have told us". Sorry, you should have been checking. The chia bircher was bland and my coffee was so bad it was undrinkable. I thought the decor was cute though and the staff were very friendly, I've got to give them that. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Sorry guys!
Peter Russell
Interesting looking cafe with eclectic collection of decor and fittings. Disappointing breakfast though. Bircher muesli sounded great on paper but in reality was a bland bowl of slop with a few strawberries tossed on top for colour. Hot drink was tepid at best. Service was pleasant enough but this cafe needs to improve. They are fortunate that the location lacks real competition.
MoodandFood
I came across this cute cafe when going out to lunch with a few of my friends and heard great things about it. The menu can be found on their website, and consists of a range of options that appeal to both adults and kids as well. Prices were moderately high considering the size of some of the meals, but I've heard the salads are worth their value. I chose to have the 'ava-bit-a-cado' (if I remember it was $15.90). After accidentally bringing me the wrong dish, a plate of bread topped with herbed ricotta, avocado, tomatoes and a sprinkling of spices was brought promptly. The unknown spice mix added flavour to the rather bland ricotta. Since these elements were placed separately, it was difficult to try all of the elements at once, nothing brought them together. A side of salad was also included and looked rather sad, with a lot of dressing that somehow lacked any other flavour than vinegar. The salad looks like the packet mixes you buy from Costco, so I have to say it was not too enjoyable. The spice mix was probably the best part of the meal.

God i love this cafe. The food is alway great and i just love the atmos, just like a little piece of Melbourne goodness. Only thing thats not absolutely fabulous is the coffee, its ok just not the bomb..

Perfect example of thinking they are too cool. I don't know how else too put it, I can see where they were going with the entire feel of the whole place "we are trendy we don't need matching chairs" and "oh I know let's do the shopping for the entire decor at an op shop". I'm from Melbourne I love the feel of a cafe that has a "thrown together" vibe it's brilliant but flat out you have to follow through with a cafe that I want to go to. the menu (while extremely delicious) is over complicated and just a little odd. I had a lamb salad that as I said previously was wonderful, but I came to the restaurant with my whole family this included my 89 year old grandfather and my niece and nephew who are both under 5, and this is the major problem it would take a chef as talented as the one who prepared my meal moments to prepare a simple less complicated children's menu along side adding some "cafe classics" for people who don't want to go all out there with what the cafe thinks is cool this month. the last point on a children's menu is that this is in a leafy little suburb which is quote obviously a family oriented area next too a school with (we counted) 3 playgrounds within walking distance, people are going to show up with children and do what we had too and that is eat then leave quickly so that we could go somewhere to feed the kids. I'm a firm believer in you having to cater to your audience and I just don't feel like they are which is a shame because I liked My meal

Great service, love the food and the prices are reasonable. The eclectic furnishings add a lovely atmosphere, and although it's a bit noisy, it's a lovely spot. Recommended (though do book a table if you have a group!). Wish they were open a bit earlier for breakfast!

Ordinary food. Terrible service. I will not be going back. <br/>Good customer service doesn't take more time or cost more money, it can even bring returning customers. Try it, staff at A Bite To Eat, you might even enjoy your day more. It really is a win-win.

Always good. A bite to Eat is probably my most trusted Cafe in inner South Canberra. Never fails to please, has an interesting menu (but sometimes too interesting when you want something simple), great place to take people for lunch/dinner, Very friendly and funny staff, Pizza night on wednesday is great. Good overall vibe and food.

The last time I dined at A Bite to Eat at the Chifley shops was during my pre-blogging days. I remember ordering a home made jam doughnut that was served warm and straight out of the fryer. I must admit it has been a long time since Iā€™ve been back and the cafe is much bigger now. An eclectic mix of retro furniture, prints, cushions gives this place a cool vibe while remaining cosy and comfortable. Inside there are two dining areas ā€“ a lounge area filled with couches and cushioned seats the wrap around the window, and a slightly elevated area in front of the main counter. Thereā€™s more seating in the courtyard out the back as well. As a sign inside indicates, I waited by the front to be shown to a seat. The waitress provided me with the menu and told me since there was only one reserved table, I could sit anywhere I wanted. I chose the corner with all the soft scattered cushions along it. Orders are taken and paid for at the counter. I started off with the China Jasmine tea ($4.50) which was brought out quickly with a strainer above my mug. Still thinking about that jam doughnut, I was naughty and ordered the Bobo ($15) consisting of cinnamon doughnuts, citrus curd, passion fruit and fresh banana salad with mint. I received two cinnamon doughnuts with this dish (no jam inside but I wasnā€™t expecting it). The citrus curd and passion fruit balanced out the sweetness of the doughnuts. The fresh bananas helped to provide an element of healthiness which made me feel a little better. This is more of a dessert than breakfast but who can say no to freshly made doughnuts? During another trip to the Woden Valley area, I made a beeline to A Bite to Eat to try another breakfast item that had caught my eye. The Chav Merguez ($17.50) ā€“ clay baked eggs with lamb merguez sausage topped with fetta and corn salsa and served with toast. When this was placed in front of me, I could smell curry spices and the yummy lamb sausage still cooking away in the hot clay dish. The two eggs were ove

Really disappointed. Had to ask the staff twice to take our order. I ordered toast with avocado and mushroom and the mushrooms were jet black swimming in watery black juice that looked very unappetizing. They did taste a little better than they looked but I could only really taste the garlic they'd been cooked in. Also there was tomato in the mushroom mixture which isn't indicated on the menu. It might have just been an off day though because I've only ever heard good things about this place.

Will be returning. Friends had recommended to eat here & finally made it last weekend. Was pleasantly greeted with staff and seated in the outdoor courtyard, which was really relaxing. Coffee was great and food was delicious. Food came out quickly and prices were very reasonable. Big thumbs up!!

Absolutely awful coffee. The food here was decent, but I am so turned off by the coffee. It was burnt and tasted like dirty water. Because of that I won't be going back here again

I love this place! So chilled out and relaxed. Very attentive staff, a great range on the menu, and who doesn't enjoy 'all day breakfast' on the weekend.<br/><br/>Give it a go, you won't be disappointed!

Not sure what all the fuss is about.... Food was ok. I had the hazelnut French toast which was good but not as amazing as I was expecting from the description. The decor was somewhere between Hipster chic and dingy - not my style but I can see what they were aiming for and it works if you bear that in mind. Had a slightly grimey feel to it but that's probably, again, because the recycled furniture/crockery look is not my cup of tea. Ordered a chai latte and got an actual milky chai tea. I object to this because while I'm a great lover of teas, the term 'chai latte' has a specific meaning and it's disappointing when you just get a pot of chai tea instead of a frothy cup of sweet deliciousness.<br/><br/>Kudos for being the first cafe I've been to in Canberra that serves babycinos in nice, big plastic mugs. Brilliant idea.<br/><br/>I think this place would be much more enjoyable for people who like a less stylised version of the alternative, repurposed, hipster approach you might find in New Acton or Braddon.
Miss Chinchilla
This place is my local and I'm here most weekends for breakfast. I'm never disappointed with the food - always fresh, always tasty, the gluten free bread is among the best I've tried in Canberra, and it's good value. And they get the basic things, like scrambled or poached eggs, consistently right. The coffee is always very good. Some other reviewers have commented on service - I always find the staff friendly and helpful, and welcoming. As a solo diner a lot of the time (my breakfast out is my down time), I have often found myself ignored completely at other cafƩs. Sometimes the wait staff suffer from being too task focused (they come to your table to clear dishes, rather than to check if you want another coffee, for example) but that applies to almost every dining establishment I go to. Overall I love this place and will keep coming back and highly recommend it to anyone who wants a delicious meal in a warm, relaxing atmosphere.

A Remarkable Place. It would be easy to dismiss A Bite To Eat as a hipster playground for those wearing thick black rimmed glasses and skinny jeans with flannel, but you would be wrong. Well apart from the decor which is genuine rather than created (yes everything looks like it is bought from an op shop), but the point is does a series of expensive, flash black tables and chairs make any real difference to the food or atmosphere? If you answered no, you're with me on this. I got a sense that choices were made for reuse rather than effect. However the two most important things a restaurant must get right are staff and food. The staff are great, they are pleasant, attentive and very good at their jobs. I turned up with a grizzly 6 month old and the delightful young lady that served us very quickly found a table and not once did I get the feeling that we were causing difficulty, which I'm sure we were. The food is excellent, easily matching that, that can be produced by the much recognised fine dining experiences of Aubergine, Rubicon and OnRed. I would encourage anyone who enjoys a proper breakfast to do battle with the Marcellus.<br/>If you want your coat taken at the door, and be ushered to a table and have menus brought to you by the Maids of Olympus (ok that's a bit much) A Bite To Eat may not be for you. If you want an excellent meal, a great atmosphere and really good staff put this place on your list.

Excellent function venue. June 2014, very friendly and super helpful staff who went out of their way, food was really tasty, venue ideal for family and friends party gathering.

My local haunt- cozy, great breakfasts, awesome vibes!. I love a bite to eat! I understand where some of the below commenters are coming from in that the service can be hit and miss, but they are mostly friendly once you get their attention. That seems bad perhaps, but the cozy atmosphere, cute mismatched furniture, interesting food, good drink selection and live music on sundays makes up for it! The pizzas on Wednesdays are super delicious, and the breakfasts are awesome!! I think a la carte menu on regular days is a bit overpriced, but for breaky, coffees and cakes (or the amazing fat chips with aioli), pizza or tapas (on sundays with the live music 5-7)- this place is the best! Love love, from a loyal local.

Awful Service, again.. The food here is pretty average, sounds good but comes out completely different to the description. The service is terrible. Ive been here a few times and it literally has not changed. Ask for help from the staff and they just look at you confused. Does not make for a pleasant meal. I seriously don't understand how the management doesn't do anything about this considering this place always gets bad customer service comments. It's such a tempting little space but disappointing!

My husband and I went here for breakfast this morning, and it happened to be the worst breakfast we have had in a long time. We both ordered the standard with poached eggs. The toast and bacon was burnt and inedible and the extra side of mushrooms consisted on five mushrooms on the plate. Service was slow and not at all welcoming. Certainly will not be heading back Again. Hugely disappointed.

A Let Down. I'd been meaning to come to A Bite To Eat for awhile as I heard it was a great suburban place to go - I'm not sure what I was expecting but this is what we got. Coffees were reasonably nice and came out timely. We then pondered the menu - looked pretty good but the $4.50 per extra item charge really caught me off guard, not even the cafe's in Kingston/Manuka charge that. We figured for the price the serves would be generous and all ordered extra's. The Potato Rosti I ordered to side my bacon & eggs was bland and not fully cooked, my friends both ordered extra bacon and for their $4.50 were delivered 1 piece of bacon! Our meals took 30mins to be delivered and they weren't overly busy at the time. I won't be going back, there are so many great breakfast places in Canberra, this definitely isn't one of them.

Delicious food, terrible service, but I think we may have had a new girl.....

Excellent Brunch. This place does suburban dining expertly! Whilst for a Saturday brunch it was busy, the staff were attentive and the wait for the food was not long. The brunch menu is quite an interesting mix, it's nice to see alternatives to the usual run-of-the-mill egg dishes. The pearl barley fritters with poached eggs and artichoke salsa was an unusually delicious mix, as was the kedgeree, which came with a very generous helping of mackerel and ladles of thick curry sauce. The smoothies were also delicious (and huge!). Most definitely will be back.

Great night. Just came back from a great night enjoying very tasty Pizza and the best chips ever. Desserts were wonderful too. The service was excellent with our lovely waitress joining in on our banter which just added to the whole dining experience.<br/><br/>9 ladies enjoyed the night and we will be back, thank you.

Catch 22. The food was fantastic, great dƩcor and fun menu...but the service was terrible.
Lucymvincent
Never again. Loud, expensive, poor service and dry chewy food. Used to have amazing fresh juices but with a change in owner has been replaced with bottled juices. Coffee was lukewarm and two out of four arrived 10 minutes after the others so we couldn't enjoy together. Eclectic setting that is fun but doesn't make up for the remaining poor dining experience.

Never had bad food here.. And a special mention for the chips. I have eaten with kids who regretted choosing the chocolate porridge, and thought, "Serves you right."<br/><br/>I'm unused to strong coffee and they used to make an iced coffee concoction here that made me feel like I should go to A&E.<br/><br/>The only criticism I have of this cafe is that the carpeted front section, which has heaps of little kids dining there with their mums on the benches and lounge, does attract flies.
Cafe_goer
No service - appalling. I have been here a few times and enjoyed a coffee and brunch. Each and every time though the service has been lacking and inattentive. This last time was no exception, 30mins and still no service, needless to say- we left. It may be a cute place to eat but they don't understand customer service.
Rebecca
Great for gluten free vegetarians. Cute ecletic place that is very casual. Good range of gluten free desserts/cakes and some nice mains though slightly overpriced. Staff are a bit too cool for school.
Cafe Crawler
Poor, slow service. Waited 25 mins for our order to be taken and watched people who arrived 30 mins after us and, ordered the same meal, finish their food and leave before our drinks arrived. Food arrive 47 mins after we got there. I only stayed because my husband didn't want to leave once we'd ordered. Never Again!!!

Cool in Canberra's burbs. This place is so cool but still family friendly. In fact just plain friendly.<br/>Food was good, not awesome but really good. Service was friendly and efficient. Highly recommended for a relaxed night out with the good citizens of Canberra.

This place must have changed hands in the last couple of years - the food has always been good but now the service is really good too - friendly efficient and helpful.

Great atmosphere. Have been a few times, but won't be heading back again. Food came out and the eggs were cooked the wrong way. Long brown hair found on my hash brown. At least the meal was taken off the bill. Cute place for a drink but I don't recommend the food.

Rude, arrogant service. Mediocre, overpriced food with pretentious names. <br/>Very rude, arrogant inpatient waiter.<br/><br/>There is so many restaurants in Canberra, choose one of them instead <br/>Avoid going to A Bite to Eat if you can... unless you like eating average food, paying a lot and having your day ruined...

I have been to this restaurant over many years and its always been wonderful. The new owners have decimated the menu. We only had a choice of a few pizzas and less salads. The pizzas came to table uncut but were passable. The service was either gruff or apologetic. We were all disappointed, there were 5 of us, so no deserts were had. So sad to see a once wonderful eclectic place lose it, big time.

Cute little place to grab brunch. They make the most awesome homemade warm jam doughnuts!

My favourite lunch spot in the Woden area. Great atmosphere and setting; always full of people; and good food. Be sure to book. Large meals that are good for sharing. Mississippi and Casablanca are two of the best.

Lazy service depends too much on food and atmosphere. I like the food here - cakes are delicious, servings are generous, breakfast is fantastic. What I don't like is that the staff all act like they're too cool to bother with basic niceties such as greeting patrons (rather than leaving people standing around in front of the register like shags on rocks), smiling and saying 'goodbye' as you leave. Yeah - A Bite to Eat has a well-deserved reputation for great food and ambiance... I just wish the service was also up to scratch!

It wasn't terrible but it wasn't great either. The service was slow and my eggs were over cooked. On the plus side, they were very attentive and willing to adapt meals for my husband's allergies . I might go again but only if invited by friends.

Best Burritos and Potato Cakes. This place doesn't seem fantastic when you first walk in, but the food was so delicious!! Strongly recommend the Holy Fijoles and the Tweed dishes. Excellent!

Very disappointing service. Went to A Bite To Eat on Saturday morning. I have loved the food each time in the past BUT the staff most certainly need some lessons on people skills. They are rude, unsmiling and downright surly towards customers. Trust me folks it doesn't earn you any brownie points. You cannot rely on great food to appease customers. Your surly unsmiling faces were not conducive to a fun breakfast. I also believe the "quirky" we can get away with serving your coffee in chipped mugs is definitely not the way to go with this ex patron, I am afraid i will not be back.

Trading on past performance. I've been visiting this place for nearly 5 years now, for work and social lunches and once for a group breakfast. Back in the day, it was fresh, quirky, eclectic and you could expect to get interesting food, pleasant if not polished service and generally have a bit of an experience with your food. <br/>Now, though, it seems that the unique quirkiness that was a positive hallmark is being used as an excuse for average food with a side of uncaring or inattentive service. I still go there, mainly out of nostalgia, but the interval between visits is increasing. It's still a quirky and interesting place in the suburbs, and there aren't enough of those!

Chaotic. It is pretty chaotic here on the weekends for breakfast/brunch/lunch. It seems the place is perhaps too popular for its own good in some ways. <br/><br/>But the Mexican eggs breakfast I had was pretty tasty.

Not impressed. Service is terrible and food is very ordinary.

Bite me, a bite to eat.. It should have realized when the first thing you are confronted with is a sign warning customers against being rude... 'being unreasonable and rude won't get you anywhere' It made me think, 'Why would I be rude? What are you going to do to me to make me rude? I'm ordinarily a very nice human'. Then I read the next paragraph glibly suggesting that I might prefer Macdonalds, my blood pressure rose... I was starting to get an inkling... What's wrong with a sign that says "we take extra care with preparing your food, it might therefore take a little longer than some places. Our staff appreciate your patience". Ahhhhh much nicer than being accused as soon as you walk in the door of being rude. <br/>Then, realizing we couldn't have a seat we ordered my very first DIY take away. We kept expectations low by ordering coffee and vegemite toast to be presented with barely warmed toast with a plastic knife and a tub of hard butter and petrified vegemite. Wow. Surely it's easier to just spread our toast with butter and vegemite than it is to both pay for and prepare tubs of spreads. In what situation did they expect we were eating our take away? On stable tables somewhere? Then having to grab a knife from a nearby table to stir in the sugar they were far too busy being slow in the kitchen to stir through for us...I thought. I am going to join urban spoon to write a review on this place or I will carry my anger with me all day long. Why not make a modicum of effort not to enrage your customers then your staff won't need to laminate a little insulting sign. This place bites

Woudl not go again.. I had real all the reviews so did not expect excellent service, and they did not surprise in that regard. What annoyed me is that with slow service etc we were given the bill about 10 minutes after last food item was served and told the next people for the table were waiting. We had booked for a Sunday brunch and was at no time told we would need to be out in an hour (as I would not have booked).<br/><br/>As per other people's comments service was slow, but my other comments on the place include: cramped (we could only get into the table one way as the other ways other chairs and tables were in the way and then stuck as other people sat down and we could not get past there chairs), some things that were meant to be eclectic were just junk (eg old chair had the vinyl peeling in a number of places), parking hard for the little shops, limited menu (although cool names for the dishes), and on the expensive side ($4 for a cup (not a mug) of coffee, $7.92 (the 2 is not a typo) for a bacon, egg and cheese bagel (and just one piece of bacon) and mug of hot chocolate came in a small soup bowl, which was nice, although it had to be almost cold before you could pick it up as no handle. <br/><br/>And then there was the service (or lack thereof). Fifteen minutes to get menus (we ordered drink then), then when our drink arrived 20 minutes later we had to ask to order (as the waitress has already walked off) and as mentioned before shortly after getting our food we were given the bill and told the next party for our table was ready.<br/><br/>Suggest people who want something in the general Woden area turn Mawson (Bruno's) or Delissio's in Curtin (who are open for Sunday breakfast).<br/><br/>This was a great place years ago but has changed hands and now is just expensive and try hard with poor service. Avoid.

My meal came out after everyone else had already finished their meal!! Food was average.

The Chai. Is phenomenal. I had an extremely pleasant Sunday afternoon here. Sometimes the service is pretty poor, sometimes your food orders go astray, but it's really ok because the place is divine.<br/><br/>(And the brownies are heavenly).

The dining highlight in Canberra. I always rush to A Bite To Eat whenever I visit Canberra. Quirky decor, delicious meals and a fun and fresh vibe. A Bite To Eat is the best brunch in the nation's capital. (And I'm a Melburnian... we pride ourselves on being able to identify a decent cafe!)

Very eclectic place with a changeable menu and good cider (my spouse reckons it's like being in someone's kitchen). They currently do live music and tapas on Sundays.

A Bite to Eat is one of my favourite southside lunch spots. Iā€™ve also heard itā€™s good for breakfast and dinner. Serves are generous and ideal for sharing dishes. The decor is relaxed and casual with an eclectic collection of chairs and crockery. Itā€™s always full of people enjoying each otherā€™s company, so it pays to book. Service is friendly and the menu offers interesting options. The Malabar ā€“ an Indian style pilaf with mixed veggies, coconut curry and beetroot raita $17.50 is visually beautiful and Iā€™m told, also delicious. One serve can be easily shared by two people. Chiquita ā€“ mini slow smoked pork burrito serve with herbed tomato salsa had some very flavoursome pork and was one of my favourites. $13.50 Itā€™s serve size was not mini at all, but possibly not quite enough for two. The Mario ā€“ beef meat ball open sammich with boccocini, torn basil, olive and tomato sauce $14.50, is also a good choice, well complimented by the olives. This was also especially good. One serve was enoug

So the verdict: This place is delightfully different as is their menu. Service was notably friendly and the general vibe of the restaurant is casual, cozy and comfortable. I obviously ordered the wrong dish and only have myself to blame but next time I'm in in the mood for a trip to the 'burbs for breakie A Bite To Eat will be at the top of my list!

These were the best potato cakes I've ever tasted!

Worth the trip: Fully licensed, A Bite To Eat would be fantastic for a catch up with a friend, having a beer or wine with a bit of food to match. From the number of patrons inside and the families and kids on the playgrounds outside, A Bite To Eat has become the focal point of the local community and is well worth the experience. The lunch and dinner menus look great too.

This was my dish - the 'Fishy' with a extra side of venison chorizo for good measure - this included corn and coriander fritters with house cured ocean trout, poached egg and herb salsa
