Review Pepper Lunch - Canberra

Really tasty dinner with fresh ingredients. Staff friendly and helpful. The wagyu beef great quality and good serving. The salmon salad tasty but small serving. Great place to grab a meal before a movie…

I had the sizzling tofu and vegetable curry with a side of kimchi. It was really good, the veggies were still nice and crispy, and the kimchi works so well with the curry. Order at the register and they bring it out.

Nice Japanese curry, fast service. Decent to large portion size for vegetarian curry. More fast food than restaurant environment Better suited for a colder day or if they fix their aircon/cooling. Too hot for summer.

100% consistency each time you go and really friendly staff. Food hits the spot like nothing else.

Affordable and quick service, what’s not to like? Large portions too. The chicken has a bit of a strange taste, like old oil? Rest of it was enjoyable though

Busy place when we went. Service was very efficient and didn't wait long. Food was okay, but you don't get nearly as much meat as you see in their promo shots. Nice food if you're just passing and need a quick and easy fill up, but I wouldn't venture here just for the food. It's ok, but not great.

Value for money and quick service. Also ice cream is fantastic. You must try 'Black Sesame Ice cream' or 'Green Tea and Red Bean Ice cream'. I love this place at Canberra and Adelaide because they close their shop late. But it will be very warm inside of restaurant in summer......

This place represents a unique way to dine in a casual setting. The plate the food is served on is heated up via electro magnetic induction, which is quicker and hotter than other means. This is where you cook and eat your food from! The food is quick, tasty and always satisfies! Their original signature wagyu beef dish is the best one there!

First time try their menu. Really good Japanese style food with amazing taste. Especially suitable for winter! Also vegetarian friendly! I should try their ice cream when summer comes!

Was meant to have this in Japan where the chain originated but never ended up going for some reason. So this was my first time having Pepper Lunch and I loved it! It's really such a cool concept. So many choices of dishes but I went with a chicken curry dish which was really tasty and aromatic. Would definitely try out other locations.

It provides fast service and a guaranteed hot meal, perfect for a stop over lunch at Canberra on the way back to sydney.

I've always loved the classic pepper beef rice (add cheese) and the boyfriend got the chicken katsu curry. The Katsu looked dry but was in fact very juicy and tender. The curry sauce is also very nice.
1 star is taken off just because i feel like it's slightly overpriced (especially when you make it into a meal).
FR- Tastes
Taste: ate here on a Sunday afternoon for late lunch and had the Creamy Chicken Teppan pasta, the dish was balanced and they serve it par-cooked on a really hot cast-iron plate, this then allow you to cook it sizzling plate style :) I guess both my partner and I enjoy the thrill of doing this!? But the creamy sauce had a good hit of garlic that went well with the chicken and creaminess made the mushroom more enticing to eat. The construction of the whole dish definitely worked with all the flavours and textures.
My partner had the Single Meat Sizzling Curry (Hamburger) the meat patty was moist and seasoned well the curry added a different depth of taste to the dish. It was a nice combination of flavours not too salty and the curry was not too overpowering. The onion rings as the side dish was deep fried well and was nice and crunchy, perfect for adding to the crunch texture of the meal.

Look: the dish was quite entertaining in itself as it was served piping hot and sizzling!

Service: great service, staff were nice, helpful and very polite.

Ambience: It got busier from time of arrival (3:45pm)

Location: good location as it is located not far from main road crossing, but difficult parking facilities.

Price/value for money: pretty reasonable, size of the dish is very filling.

*the cold water tap is definitely a plus!! This helped coz you didn’t have to wait for the service crew to get u a fresh bottle of table water everytime and because it’s a tap you know the water hasn’t been stagnant for long!
Was excited to see pepper lunch now in canberra. Its quite a small restaurant but the turn around for tables isn't too bad. Ordered my usual steak with veg and side of miso soup. I was disappointed with the lack of "pepper" taste - Felt this meal lacked punch compared to other pepper lunch meals I've had. Tried some of my partners chips which were super crunchy and perfectly battered and fried to perfection. Service is friendly and fast as usual. Not the best meal but probably won't stop me from coming back again.

Pepper Lunch is a casual, Japanese DIY BBQ franchise. My partner and I dined here recently and the experience took me right back to dining in Tokyo alleyway restaurants. The atmosphere, flavours, smells and style all reminded me of Japan and it was just like being back in that wonderful country. The DIY BBQ involves semi-prepared meals that are served on sizzling hot plates. When your meal arrives at your table you take over as the chef and cook the meat to your liking.

Like the style of how I could dine in and cook my own steak and the staff is quite friendly as well. However, takeaway is terrible when I ordered their wagyu steak, they did not even ask me how would I like it cook but I wasn't aware until I got back home and found my steak to be well done and chewy. The staff should have asked how would you like your steak to cook, which is inconsiderate.

This place started in Japan and has grown to a number of restaurants worldwide. It serves steaks and photos appear very appetizing. However I felt terrible on two occasions and I thinks it's because MSG is used. It might be on the seasoning, sauce, or marinade.

Not bad for a franchise style meal. The meals come out hot on a sizzling plate. The combinations are a bit different to what is available in Civic but well worth a try. I usually get the beef and rice for around $10. It also comes with a knob of butter which you are meant to mix through the rice and beef.

I've been here three times now. Like some other reviewers, I was very glad to learn that Pepper Lunch has come to town. The menu offered seems slightly different to the Pepper Lunches in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines that I've been to. I think this one brings greater variety of dishes (the onion rings are excellent!) and no pork in sight. At any Pepper Lunch, I have only eaten the famous pepper rice and the beef steaks. I guess, one must use a bit of common sense as well when eating here. So yes, I agree with other viewers that cooking spagetti and chicken on a hot plate may not be the best of ideas. But, having said that, you still have many other dishes to choose from if you stay clear of the pasta and chicken. One note for this particular branch, please put more butter into the Pepper Rice -- you could have gotten a 4.0 from me.

Not something worth trying... The dish looks yummy but it wasn't 😄 the pan is not right for spaghetti as it makes them dry and crisp for no reason but at the same time holds on the oil and gives you that way too greasy taste which will not leave your tastebuds happy!

Great atmosphere! Slight small seating capacity. Overpriced for what it is worth. Most of the rice dishes in stone, make sure you cook it thoroughly especially the chicken.

I dined as a guest of Pepper Lunch; all opinions are my own . As part of the generous meal at their launch, Pepper Lunch also included a complimentary dessert soft-serve – hello #icecreamthurs! I am a huge fan of soft serve, and I feel like the benchmark in Canberra has been set pretty high, with the soft serve from XO in Narrabundah. I was very excited to see that Pepper Lunch offers a range of Asian-inspired flavour toppings for their vanilla soft serve, including black sesame (unavailable at the launch) and green tea (matcha), along with caramel and chocolate options. Both my friend and I picked the matcha, which came in a huge cup and had green tea syrup and powder swirled throughout. The icecream itself was really creamy, and I loved that

Coming from a country where this franchise is prevalent I have already lost count of how many times I've eaten at a Pepper Lunch outlet. That being said I am glad Canberra now has its own outlet so I can get my fix on weekends! For those who don't know; Pepper Lunch is a Japanese franchise that serves DIY Teppanyaki dishes. Your food comes half cooked or uncooked on a hot plate and you let it cook a bit after adding some seasoning if your choice. Classic dishes are probably the Pepper Rice (which I would recommend for a first timer) but the other stuff like the Hamburg steak or salmon is good too. Just remember to order rice on the side. They've got Sundaes for dessert but unfortunately the black sesame variety (my personal recommendation) is not available yet. Hopefully we get outside seating soon because I anticipate it's going to be crowded for the next few weeks!
