Review Lava Espresso Bars - Canberra

Richard Brooks
A good cafe with a limited but sufficient breakfast range. They do good coffee. Coffee service is a bit slow compared with the food as the coffee came out once I had almost finished my breakfast.

Great place to have coffee. They serve Wood & Co coffee from Melbourne. I recommend trying their pourover coffee if you like black coffee, it is one of the nicest around, and they change up the origin they use. There are a decent selection of sweets and sandwiches, but they don't have a full menu. During the week, there is usually space to sit and study or work, with the large tables and atmospheric music. There is also a Lava Espresso in Weston which is also worth checking out.

Coffee was ok. Service quite relaxed and menu limited.

Casual, open, minimalistic but good vibe. Staff are great, sandwich was great. Coffee is winner too very simple menu. Don't complicate it, they don't... some music would be nice but it's low key. Good for a mid morning treat.

Being a mum n a business owner of two businesses have to say top service!!! After leaving my wallet boys have answered my message on facebook - they were even happy to meet me later after shop is closed! Above and beyond!!! If I could 10/10 service!!!

Met friends for morning tea and NOtHING gluten free? I've been celiac for 8+ years now and I can't remember not being able to get something gluten free even when travelling to remoter areas of Australia. There always seems to be a loaf of gf bread in the freezer outback? It was really disappointing....sorry!

Legitimately drive out of my way to get coffee here, daily. Great coffee, best staff! A gem in the Creek.

Such a passion for specialty coffee. This new age coffee shop uses excellent equipment and an intriguing bean selection process. Roasters include some of Melbourne's finest, Sensory Lab, Proud Mary and Code Black. My long black today was one of the greatest coffees I have had in Canberra. Its no wonder with Lincoln's advanced brewing methods utilising a Malkonig EK43, Haus scales and a TDS meter all combined with taste being the greatest guide and you get consistently delicious coffee.

One of the best coffees I've had. Excellent service. Can hardly wait to go back there.

Ridiculous! Coffee is amazing and the staff are great! We love it!

I love going to Lava, I'll often drive out the way to grab a coffee and have a chat to the genuinely friendly staff. Both Cafes have open airy fit-outs and there's always a seat in the sun which is nice. These guys are clearly passionate about providing Canberra's best coffee and an unreal atmosphere to enjoy it.

Your coffee is amazing! The best I have had in Canberra. Toasties are fresh and full of flavour! So disappointed that I live in Forde and you guys are in Weston!

Consistently great coffee. Great lunch just last weekend.

My go to coffee place in Phillip. Coffee is always good and the guys are friendly and helpful. The food isn't bad either

Weak coffee. No depth. Use to be good, but not for some time now.
Alex Evans Roberts
The best coffee in the Weston/Woden area!

I am so lucky to have a place that serves one of the best coffees in Canberra! Don’t forget to get the cheddar chorizo toasties if you ever visit

Despite the initial struggle to order lunch that they hadn't run out of an ingredient for, this was an otherwise superb coffee and food experience. Coffee that had delish caramel and dark chocolate tones. Chicken and tarragon roll where every component was highest quality. I'd add another star if they kept on top of their ingredient stock.

Lava is a handy spot within walking distance of the Woden CBD that offers a relaxed casual atmosphere, friendly staff, great coffee and light tasty sandwiches. Both toasted and fresh options are available including a good chorizo, chilli jam, Swiss cheese and basil sandwich $11. The avocado and Persian feta on sourdough also sounds tempting for $9 ($3 extra for an egg) or sourdough fruit toast for even something lighter at $4.50.

Stopped by here for brunch after a disaster at the Meating Room. Well it was almost as bad.

Ordered a smashed avocado and paid $5 extra for a side of bacon - what a disappointment - I got just one slice for my $5.

Again we have this obsession with sourdough and it's always over cooked.

Coffee? Despite using power house coffee brand sensory from Melb it was absolute rubbish - I've never quite had coffee *that* bad before - sour, bitter but oddly weak (despite ordering a double shot!).

Trying far too hard to be hipster and not enough focus on delivery.

Food - 3/10
Coffee - don't bother. 1/10.

The Lava Expresso Bar, in Colbee Court Phillip and within walking distance of Woden is a cosy spot for coffee and a light lunch. The coffee is good and it has a long sunny table at the front strewn with newspapers for relaxing and offers some interesting well priced, well sized toasties and fresh sandwiches (also good for sharing between two modest appetites).

Great coffee! Glad to find such a nice cafe in an unexpected location.

Great coffee! Glad to find such a nice cafe in an unexpected location.

Coffee great, fruit toast yum! However I felt that the atmosphere was ordinary - sort of cold and far from inviting. Most of the two person tables are inches away from each other and unless your coffee conversation needs to be heard by others, you feel you must look straight ahead, with shoulders squeezed in, and, while watching you don't raise your elbows as you lift your coffee, whisper quietly to your partner. Some people may like that, but we find it hard to relax under those conditions.

BEST coffee in Canberra, cute place!. I love Lava!! You wouldn't expect to come across such a gem in industrial Phillip, but there you go! Awesome vibe, nice and sunny, and home to my favourite coffees in canberra! They also have a small but good selection of bagels, toast w/ avo, salmon and/or tomato and pastries. Love it!

Overpriced for size and quality. First time visit. Won't be back.
Canberra crowds do not respond to poor value. This shops days are numbered for sure. The lack of customers at 1230 - 115 should have been a clue.

Great little find. Stumble upon this place one morning. awesome, cheap and easy breakfast and coffee

Seriously good coffee. I drive across town to LAVA in Phillip just for its coffee.

Seriously, it is that good.

I caress each cup. I swirl the essences around my mouth in joyful abandonment ... each mouthful is full of flavour. I waste not a dollop of froth.

These guys are passionate about what they do, and they do it well. The coffee is beautiful - did I mention that?

Simple but fresh food menu. Avocado and tomato smash is worth a try.

Mixed feelings. Two trips;had one of best coffees in Canberra and also one of worst. Inconsistent. The smashed avocado toast is very nice.

-----02 Nov, 2013-----

Awesome coffee. I've only been there once, but it was the best coffee I've had in Canberra. I will go back and see how consistent it is; which is the key thing.

Had a smashed avocado/fetta on sourdough for brekkie, it was really nice.

I think if this place offered a little more food variety it would explode in popularity.

I stopped on at this cafe as the reviews looked good. None of the reviews mentioned that how you want your coffee is irrelevant; you'll get it how they want to make it.
The too-cool-to-smile guy at the counter advised me that he'd leave the sugar out of the coffee "cause it's on the table". I requested that he stirs it in before adding milk.
He did not. I received it lukewarm with no sugar.
They are apparently blissfully unaware that they are in a service industry. Paying customers expect a coffee (or sandwich, or meal, or dress, or computer, or car...) made to their specifications. Clearly they are incapable of this. My suggestion to them is to close the cafe and start a barista school. Then hire a barista to teach them.
I'm sure they are glad that I won't be returning.

Blink and you'll miss it, Lava is deceptively large linside with plenty of seating. Order and pay at the counter for solid coffee, pastries, toast, basic brekky and lunch offerings and coffee beans.

Cool little cafe. I thought the staff at this cafe were very friendly and knowledgeable about their coffee. Wouldn't mind stopping in for a salmon bagel next time.

Best coffee in Australia 10/10. When you see talent it should be rewarded. I've drunk thousands of coffees around the world, but for me this is the best coffee I've had, bar none. The setting is in the suburbs, the decor is minimalist but stylish, the staff are friendlly, attentive and professional. But it is the coffee that makes this place special. Each cup is made with care and precision and the best of the best is the pour over varieties made by the Barista, Lincoln who really knows his stuff. Try the Kenyan 'pour over' (filter) - black of course. It's Devine.

Perhaps the prettiest flat whites in Canberra, in the far from prettiest suburbs (no offence, Phillip). If your business in Canberra relates to cars or requires Westfield, take a small easy-park detour into industrial chic. Lava is a must for black coffee drinkers – the filter coffee is excellent and you’ll often be given a choice of two exotic growing locations.
