Review Jimmys Place - Canberra

We discovered this place today, 2/4. The seafood laksa was excellent, full of flavour, a good amount of seafood, veg, and tofu. The special fry rice, Mongolian beef and mixed vegetables were also great. The price is fair for the quality of the food. We will be back to try more dishes. Keep the delicious flavours going! Thank you

Catastrophic experience on food delivery. Do not order Minced beef egg with soup. What you will get is a small bowl for $28.8. Explanation from owner stated they neither make their own menu nor set the price but Hungry panda did. Clown 🤡. Will give zero star if possible

My friend Anj recommended Jimmy's, so last Friday, I decided to take my family there. They have a great selection of takeaway family meals, though, so we decided to just takeaway. Pack A ($43.89, good for four) came with Mongolian Beef (truly delicious!), boneless Chicken with Lemon Sauce (moist and flavourful), fried rice (my kids took it all), and three spring rolls that were great but probably would have been even better if we had them freshly fried (we took 15 minutes to get home). We also ordered a hot and sour soup that my wife enjoyed. The counter lady was very friendly and we didn't wait long for our food. Overall, a great experience, we would definitely return and dine in so that we can really enjoy all that food fresh from their kitchen.

Absolutely love this place, every time I come to Canberra we always take our 94 year mum there, they pamper her with smiles and beautifully prepared food. Everyone must experience Jimmy's Place at least once ( you will be hooked)

Love mud crab at this place, make our trip there every few months (from Sydney) and their dishes are at their absolute top standard. Must try if ever drop by Canberra.

Their lobster was ok, just a bit expensive for what we got. There wasn't enough noodles as I normally would get. I also tried their shark fin soup but thought it was ordinary and not with $18 for a small bowl.

Nice and spacious restaurant with some great dishes such as their crispy chicken. Vegetable dishes were fresh and al dente. Szechuan fish felt westernised and lacked the required pungency and spiciness while the fried desserts were a bit stale...

So it’s 7:32pm as I write this review. We arrived just before 6:30pm. Made a reservation but no table was ready. Two mismatched tables were placed next to one another. We then waited and waited. My wife got up and helped herself to the menus. We then waited and waited. My father got up and had to ask for a waiter to take our order. We then waited. We weren’t alone as number of other tables went through the same ordeal. I did a quick count and there were at least 11 other tables with zero plates of food. 70 minutes after sitting down we still wait. Takeaways seemingly take a preference with a lineup of drivers waiting for pick up. It’s an absolute calamity! Not enough staff and just a frustrating experience. Hopefully the food is worth the wait.

Meat in short soup and spring rolls smelt off. They took the meals back and then ignored us for the rest of the time we were there. No offer of refund or change of meal. I was then told that the meat is fresh and they all eat it, as I was leaving. Very, very bad customer service.

NOT COMING BACK TO THIS DISGUSTING RESTAURANT!! I DONT KNOW HOW MANY FLIES MY FAMILY AND I HAVE EATEN! WE ARE VERY UNFORTUNATE TO DISCOVER THE DISGUSTING INSECT WHEN WE WERE ABOUT TO FINISH OUR FOOD! WE RETURNED THE FOOD AND DID NOT GET ANY APOLOGY! Better be checked by food and safety standard people before they kill someone!
There were two styles served with the mud crab – an XO sauce on vermicelli noodles, or ginger and shallots on egg noodles. As it was a Monday night, three crabs were pre-ordered for the six of just to be sure they didn’t run out.

The food here was quite decent. We indulged in crab which was a bit scarce and the noodles to compliment a tad soggy and not plentiful. The service is nicer when you can speak the language which I personally don't like but as most people have pointed out I can imagine the service being a tad harsher in nature due to the lack of customer service. Its wheelchair friendly as they have a side door to enter and throughout the night they do draw quite a large crowd. I enjoyed their white bait with fluffy light batter plus their sweet and sour pork was a pleasant surprise. Overall one of the better places to try some authentic chinese cuisine. The layout has a lot to offer but their dated table and chair pairings is a let down. The place is clean and spacious enough. Parking in the area is a tad hard during the night as it has to share with many other restaurants.

Very traditional China food but less oil with healthy cooking way. Love the entry soup and the followed dessert after meal. Steamed fish and stir fried vegetables are my favourite.

I understand that Jimmy's is a very busy establishment, but the service was horrible whilst the atmosphere felt cluttered and filled to the maximum. The waiters/waitresses were only focused on quickly getting the order down and deliver it to the kitchen, they did not really go out of their way to talk to the customer. As well as this, the time to get the order out was extensively long and I found it rude when we questioned the waiters several times to ask when our food would arrive, they said several times that it will be coming out soon, after a while they said they lost the docket with our orders which was really frustrating and rude. With the food, I could tell that it was rushed and no interest went in preparing it. One of the main reasons may be because we went in a busy time. If you want to eat here, then I would go before or after the rush period. But besides that, the food was bland and nothing spectacular. The only good range of food was the seafood.

Had to give poorest rating, because they almost killed me. We bought take-away. I was enjoying the sweet and sour pork (the food was very nice) when my throat suddenly felt like it was being pierced with a needle. It was agony. My daughter was on the phone to the ambulance. I couldn't breathe and was coughing uncontrollably. Every cough was agony; even the slightest movement caused intense pain in my throat. Luckily after about seven or eight minutes of the most incredible pain and fear, the coughing dislodged the sharp object.and I was able to bring it up. It was a piece of plastic with sharp ends and about 2cm long and 3mm wide. I've had surgery and my stomach is very small. If it had gone down, I would have suffered a perforated stomach.

I had gone into shock and it was about fifteen minutes before I stopped shaking and crying. When I had recovered enough, I rang them to tell them what had happened, and warn them to have a good look at the sweet and sour pork, so that it wouldn't happen to anyone else. My voice was very husky, but, but my father and daughter tell me it was easy to understand. I spoke to three people, but unfortunately none of them could speak English - strange, because I heard the first person I'd spoken to, explaining to someone in the background, that there was something in the sweet and sour pork. Puzzling!!!

Soon after that my voice failed and it took three days before I got it back. I was afraid, at first, that my vocal cords had been damaged, so those three days were very hard.

All I wanted when I rang them was an acknowledgement and an apology, and to warn them to stop this happening to anyone else. Now, because of the games they played on the phone, I/m very angry and I'm considering suing.

Good food. Agree with others with the service that it can be a little better. I felt that the service was rushed. Be mindful that they charge for tea and rice as per normal. Not an impressive seafood menu either.

Very poor service. Went with my friend and 2 12 month olds. Staff were rude about having the kid there and making a mess which I was happy to clean... They threw the receipt and told us to get out... Very rude if I was to rate it I would never put stars no matter how nice the food may be ... The service is what counts Canberra has better restaurants than this one....

I love mud crabs. My mum and I make the biannual mud-crab date at Jimmy's on her birthday and mother's day. At $50-$60 per kg, they have the best value mud crabs in Canberra (neighbouring Rubies is at least $80!). We like Singapore style and fried with chillies.

Yes the service is rushed and a little hectic, but who needs to be treated like royalty when you're up to your elbows in mud crabs? To be honest, any waiter who can respectfully top up your tea pot without laughing at the sauce all over your face deserves a tip!
Authenticity
Authentic taste, poor service. Taste is superb, however poor plating. Also, it takes less than half a second to smile, so spare us some?

Wonderful, speedy and reasonable prices was our experience. Hot, well seasoned good spaces was the universal approval around our table.

Wish there was a "Hates It" button. As soon as we stepped in the door, none of the servers paid attention to us. We attempted to gently get a waiter's attention but were promptly shooed away with a loud "JUST A MINUTE!" and vigorous hand gestures.

Restaurants like this shouldn't be allowed to function

Great Chinese Seafood restaurant with poor serivce. I have a love-hate relationship with this restaurant last 10 years. It has wonderful Chinese seafood (especially mud crab) and I hated the terrible service. I have previously wrote a complaint letter due to its poor service but I still keep coming back because the food is very good (non sea food dishes are also very nice too). I have probably visited this restaurant over 20 times in 10 years.

It's like a typical Chinese restaurant in Asian countries, you go for the food and but not for service.

Vibe here is very boot camp-esque, packed on busy nights and loud. Food is pretty average not really value for money. Staff abrupt, always busy with angry looks.

If you fancy extra condiments such as caterpillars you should come here. If you also enjoy having half your dish taken away and not replaced when said caterpillar is found, come here. If you enjoy being railroaded into paying for half the dish which you did not get to finish and not receiving an apology for the big you found in it, you've found the perfect place!

This was the worst restaurant experience we ever had! We've bwen regular customers for years and this time the crab we ordered had no taste whatsoever! We asked to fix it but they simply added few chilli flakes without changing anything. When we told the manager Linda about our experience she started yelling at us so that other people starting turning around and looking. She made us pay for something we could not eat and it is not a cheap meal, I must say. Absolutely horrible experience! We will never go there again!!

DON'T EAT HERE... Food is.... DON'T EAT HERE...

Food is bland. Customer service, what customer service? Staff is rude, took over 1 hour for all 4 main courses to be served.

What a disappointing experience...

Don't Eat Here if you aren't Asia you will wait forever!. If you are a white Australian or at least not Asian don't eat at this place. The Food is Ok but the service is appalling. We were booked in for 6.30pm - firstly they didn't have a table ready for us and we had to wait 10mins for someone to vacant the table. Then we waited 1.5 hrs for food - other than a plate of mini spring rolls for our 2 small children. Around us there was numerous table of Asian being served. We continually asked where our meals were and kept getting told they were coming. My elderly father finally walked into the kitchen and complained. The table next to us who had come in at 7.30pm and waited about 20 mins for their food was given a $30 discount off their bills for "waiting so long". When I asked for the same the lady just laughed at me. This place clearly discrinimates against non-Asian people. If they don't want to serve you they shouldn't take your booking. Absolutely discussing!!!!

All in all, I didn't mind Jimmy's. Not a massive fan of Chinese food in general, but I wouldn't say no to going back there again. I think the fact that it was clean and the service was okay were the winning points for me. Also, I didn't feel sick from eating too much oily food, so I take that as a good sign :) I had so much fun last night, it is always nice to catch up with close friends who you know you don't need to impress and just be yourselves ;)
