Review Roti House Restaurant - Canberra

Cameraeatsbeforeme
My 2nd time here! We went for their buffet this time (only in this December!), the food didn’t disappoint us! We thought it was a great deal, only $32.50 per person. Owner was really friendly as well. Would like to come back again!

Went for dinner with friends to Masterboa. We were blown away with the large menu, authentic Chinese and Malaysian food and great service. It’s also a family and child friendly place . Great ambiance, centrally located with lots of parking , great service and great food. We are coming back here for lunch tomorrow to try the other dishes on their menu . Thanks Masterboa.

Enjoyed a delicious meal delivered to our door. The roasted duck, roasted pork and BBQ pork is a must try! Definitely best in Canberra 👍. We've also tried many of the veg dishes. All very yummy. This round tasted the deep fried eggplant in special sauce-simply delicious. Other veg dishes you must not miss is the homemade snow white tofu, yam ring and chilli stir fried cabbage. Taste and flavor has always been consistent.

Been here a couple of times now. Eaten in and takeaway. Both times the food and service were great. Lots of options to suit all. The lady who served us was friendly and answered every question we asked (dining with a vegan) and was able to adjust some meals and spice levels to suit. Waiting for takeaway I watched the chef separating the ducks hanging in the window. It was nice to see such care and precision. If the location was south, we'd be here every week.

Yummy and generous portion size. Am always happy with quality dining in or my first time takeaway. Owner down to earth and friendly. Definitely my favourite Malaysian restaurant in Canberra

Laksa was fantastic and so was the BBQ pork. BBQ pork was out of the world, very closely resembling to the ones in Malaysia. I also had the opportunity to try the kam heong pipi and it was equally as good.

Beautiful relaxing atmosphere and food was awesome. Lunch menu is the best. Today had the best Singapore noodles ever and the dim sum steamed was soo good.

Their food are great. Previously went there few times and never disappoint us. However, we went again this week at 7pm and we ordered 3 dishes, 3 out of 3 were not available or was told sold out (at 7pm) bit dissappointing. But we end up ordering other dishes, which were tasty.

I just paid $14.50 for a vegetable Nasi goreng which would be lucky to have one carrot stick in it, let alone any other vegetables. Terrible.

We sat for over 2 hrs just for basic mains. I had 2 young kids who were extremely tired at the end of this dinner. They forgot our order and I had to follow up several times. Not returning again.

I had a delicious Malaysian Beef Rendang, Kang Kong, Roti Canai and Lamar. I liked having the option of modifying the chilli preference for the curry (I went with mild). Service was impeccable and food came out without much of a wait. For the price paid the portion size of meals were quite small.

We went for dinner. The ambience was good.
We had a variety of dishes. The murktabah was amazing. Also, their roti dishes were good. However, the vegan dish was bit average.

The Roti House at the bottom of the Ernst and Young building on Marcus Clarke Street in the City, has really great flaky roti. Once you try it, you will just have to go back for more. Roti is available with some dahl and chicken curry for $12 per plate…. …but it may be better to order the single roti for $6.50 and team it up with the very delicious Beef Rendang $16.80 – beef curry slowly stewed in coconut milk and secret spices.

I've only gotten takeaway from them a few times. Service is prompt, and they make a decent enough Ipoh Hoi Fun which is reasonably priced. Restaurant always seems empty when I go in to collect my order which is a worry, unless 6ish is too early for their dinner crowd?

We ordered kangkong belacan, Assam prawns and Mapo tofu. There was hardly any flavour. No chilli anywhere! At least ask your customers how spicy they want it. Not all angmohs are scared of flavour.

Friendly and helpful staff. Fantastic rotti and laksa. Always enjoy going back here. As I work my way through the menu everything had been good.

The food was really fantastic. We saw a chef in the window making the roti properly (not using frozen ones) and the food we ordered was as good as any that we had had in Malaysia.

Ok, but overpriced. Roti prices start at $7.50 with the 'cheapest' meals at $12-13. For $7.50, I could buy 2 Indian Naan bread or a tasty pie AND sausage roll from Dobsons and still come out ahead. You can get plenty of decent lunches in Canberra for under $10 so if I'm spending above that, it better be amazing or include a drink or something. The Roti itself is not bad, but it's hard to enjoy it at that price when in KL's Chinatown you can buy the best tasting street Roti you've ever had for 50c. At the very least, it should cost no more than $3-4 here like Naan bread does. 6 average tasting satay sticks cost $13 and the Milo drink tastes like it's just water+Milo for $4 (you could buy a Milo tin next door for less at the supermarket and pop it into your tap water for the same effect). Overall, food is ok, but for those who try to keep lunch costs down it's best avoided like Papa Rich or Mamak's.

Authentic and Affordable. Went there a few days ago. Service was polite and prompt. The food was really good, thought the chicken rice was very authentic. The rotis were all freshly made up front. Prices are affordable at about $15 to $20 per person. Would come back again.

Malaysian food...what a joke! Crap service, spaced out waiter who asked more money to replace dry satay peanut sauce!. Ok, wasn't expecting much, but the service was non existent.

Many places with much better food and service and atmosphere for much the same price points.

Char kway toew was ok, although portion small.

Satay was the biggest disappointment. 6 sticks of stale chicken meat, dry peanut sauce. If you understand Malaysian satay eating, you would know that the sauce is the be all and end all. Extremely dry and gritty peanut "sauce" , and had chunks of peanuts that were not cooked through. We asked if they could top up the sauce and explained that it was really dry (could not be dipped into) the waiter had the audacity to say we actually need to charge more $$ for extra sauce. No not asking extra, just asking for the actual sauce. What a joke!

As an ex Malaysian who frequents all sorts of restaurants and has a wide palette and who also. cooks, was ashamed to see that these people could put out food of this quality and call it Malaysian. You get better quality at hawker stalls in Malaysia.

Good meal. Atmosphere was buzzing on a Friday night, and service was a breeze, with delicious food being served at a good pace. Waiting staff also topped up our water regularly. Menu had good options for the family, adults and kids alike (including my sister who is a vegetarian). The crispy and sweet hat roti was the highlight of our meal.

Attentive staff and delicious Malaysian food. We stopped over in Canberra during our visit to Sydney and Perisher , and we happened to stay at Novotel which is about 3 minutes walk from Roti House. We were recommended by some friends to come here for good Malaysian food and we were not disappointed. My partner and I were impressed with the attentive and prompt service. The food was great and we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here, so much so that we came back the next day for lunch as well. We had the beef rendang dipped with flaky roti canai; chicken satay sticks; fried chicken wings; tofu goreng, assam prawns and chilli beef. We also topped it off with roti durian (creamy and sweet!).

Staff and venue were fine, however I was not impressed with food, it was mostly bland which was overcompensated for by sweetness and tasted like it was from a supermarket packet rather than the made from scratch quality that I am accustomed to.
I would only recommend it to those used to western food with children or little to no experience with Asian cuisine.
Ellen
Lovely Roti. Hit's the spot! Would definitely recommend the Roti and Rendang.
Good job guys! Keep it up!

Tasty. Perfect for lunch on a cold Canberra day. Reasonably Priced. Very friendly staff.

Enjoyed most of the meal at the time, the Roti and the Rendang were great. However my upset stomach and inability to sleep after indicated a high level of MSG which is disappointing for a restaurant of this calibre / price tag.
Service was also very casual. Had to prompt staff to order meals, ask for water etc, despite very few diners.
Ambience nil - very old cafeteria style and with bright lighting

DO NOT EAT HERE if you have any food concerns. I am a vegetarian. They served me chicken (it was not recognisable) and did not tell me until afterward.

I am still seething. (Hence, the short sentences.)

Waitstaff ignored us, food was average, atmosphere horrible.

There is no reason- ever- to eat here; plenty of other good places on the same strip.

Went there for dinner and was very disappointed with the food! The hainan chicken rice was stale! When I told the waiter, all he responded was oh really? No apology at all! Ambience was terrible! The lighting in the restaurant is so bright and the service was crap! Would NOT recommend this place!

Well-established and generous. My friends and I visited this place last year and I agree with some of the reviews that it was definitely lacking.

This week, we went back and... Man, they have improved! We ordered 4 different rotis. Perfectlisimo! Beef rendang was slow cooked, which is authentic. Ipoh horfun was generous. Nasi lemak was good. Except the sambal was not hot enough (Tip for future customers. Ask for the hotter sambal!)

They topped up our roti curries for free and would do anything for us to have a good dinner. Not pushy too.

Overall, I like everything except they didn't get that sambal right. Oh one of my friend was a Muslim and the food was halal (which is correct). Other so-called Malaysian restaurants don't even bother to buy halal products.

I'm happy. (Coming from an Indonesian Chinese + 3 Malaysian mates)

Nice Malaysian food. Came here as my friends from Melbourne recommended it. I am pleasantly surprised. The rotis are fresh and flaky. The curries and laksas were delicious. I also like the drinks selection and finished two glasses of the syrup bandung, the shocking pink condensed rose drink. This is becoming my favourite local dining place.
Alison
Great Roti and the curry was very fragrant. Seems to have improved since the previous reviews because there were 8 of us and everything we ordered was available and food was nice and very fragrant. Cheap prices for Canberra and huge servings. Service still needs improvement as they forgot 2 meals but did apologise and did bring them eventually. I'll be going back

Two visits and still no good.. I was very happy to see a Mamak style restaurant in Canberra. But it was false advertising. My first visit was on the second nite in business so maybe it was a problem for them. Many items on the menu not available, food not up to quality. But I went back three weeks later - and it was still the same.

This place exploits the 'Mamak' reputation with it's poor reproduction of Mamak favorites.
The satay taste like salted stewed meat(!)
The rendang was bland and watery.
The coconut rice was crunchy(!) Why!!
The only saving grace to the place was the Roti is correct. Fluffy, light, soft, everything that roti should be.
Only come here is you are going to restrict yourself to the roti. Everything else they serve seems to suck.

Gong. I was very very very disappoited and angry the food i have in Mamak Roti House.Never never go back again, bring down the Malaysia cuisin.
Firstly,The menu show the restaurant very very unproffesional......WHY WHY ?????at least 5 to 6 food item not available from the menu!!!!!!HOW COME is new opening Restaurant.
Secondly, poor service to customer .Waitress keep coming (3 time) to table asking customer "Are u ready for order".Rushing...rushing and rushing.....
Thirdly, the food was really not surprise me....
we order few dish like nasi lemak, malaysia chicken curry,Roti planta, and two drink.
Start with the Nasi Lemak. The sambal not hot enough, taste sweet, the dry anchovy not crispy. Not a authentic Malaysia Nasi Lemak.
Follow by Chicken curry, the curry taste watery not enough spicy and curry powder. Also can't taste any creamy coconut milk inside curry.
Roti planta look good when waitress bring to the table.BUT The dough was quite thick not cook through inside the roti .
The drink was good teh ice and teh O ice limau .

Try the Roti!. The roti canai here is delicious. Washed down with a hot mug of teh tarik and you'll be in seventh heaven.

The only thing I didn't like about Mamak Roti House was that there was simply way too much onion in some of the dishes. I do love onion, but when it is dominating everything else then it becomes a bit unappealing. These dishes were the assam-style fish and one of the vegetable dishes.

I still really enjoyed my meal here though. And I look forward to coming back again soon.

I must admit we came out a bit hungry , but all we could wish for was that the portions were bigger so we could have more!

Lorenzo’s chicken and veg was nothing special – I would recommend trying the roti set and I have heard yummy things about the Sambal so that will be what we try next time!

Enjoy and do let me know your thoughts on the place if you have been!

The Roti House appeared late last year, and features wonderful, fresh Malaysian fare including savoury and sweet roti (made on the premises), curries, desserts and drinks. We've been there twice now, and it is great to have fresh roti canai and cendol so close to home. Here are a couple of desserts ...
Roti House also has an extensive menu on offer, all of which are definitely drool-worthy sounding. Balachan Kangkong? I can't remember the last time I had those! Ketupat??? At least 2 years since my last one! It was sooo soo hard for me not to have a second dinner right there and then. I am definitely going back there for the food! Though I did not on their website that they're the same owner as the Malaysian restaurant at Garran that we didn't like. So I am definitely hoping that they have a different chef!

Changing jobs always has a lot of benefits – but in this transition, my favourite has been the array of restaurants and cafés around my new office. One of the highlights so far is that Roti House is not even a five minute walk away. Roti House states that they make the best roti and curries in Canberra. In my few excursions, I have to admit that I’ve been very impressed with the food. Roti House make their roti in house, and the end result is flaky and authentic to what you would find in Malaysia. On the day A and I met for lunch, we ordered a serving of Roti ($6.50) to share, which our waitress saying that she’ll ask for it to be cut into four pieces for easy sharing. The roti is served with the traditional sambal and curries. The dahl unfortunately was too salty to eat, but the sambal was a fantastic mix of flavours with lots of spice. Roti House also serve a variety of mamak (street hawker) dishes, including laksa, nasi lemak, nasi goreng pattaya, Penang char kuey teow and mee goreng. I’ve only ordered the Nasi Lemak when I’ve dined at Roti House, as it is so good that I can’t bear to branch out (yet). The nasi lemak ($13.80) comes with your choice of beef rendang, chicken curry or chicken wings. I’ve tried all three, but my favourite is the chicken curry. Nasi lemak is made with coconut rice, served with sambal chilli paste, fried ikan bilis (anchovies), boiled egg, peanuts and sliced cucumber. In regards to drinks, Roti House serve the Malaysian favourite of teh tarik (pulled milk tea), as well as a small selection of beer and wine (with BYO wine available also). Roti House is open Monday-Saturday for lunch and dinner. For those on the go, you can order a take away box of nasi lemak or nasi goreng with chicken wings for $8.50 (Monday to Friday only). Highly recommended. Related Posts

Mamak mee goreng - hokkien noodles wok fried with chicken, tofu, onions & tomatoes, in a blend of sweet & spicy sauce The mee goreng was pretty good. A good generous serve, tender chicken, fresh vegies and noodles that were coated in a flavoursome sauce. There was even a hint of the smokiness from the wok.
