Review Chez Frederic - Canberra

We visited here Sunday night. The food was great! I loved their arancini so much! However, the entree took about 25 minutes and the mains took over an hour to be served to our table. Our friends who did not order entrees, literally waited for their food over an hour, and I thought that was ridiculous. They probably were short in chefs on that day, but I think you could inform your customers if there is that long wait for food, at least.

Yummy Italian food. We ordered the Scallop & Prawn 🦐 ravioli and the Aglio e olio. The Scallop & Prawn ravioli was interesting. The ravioli was thin and you could see a bit of the prawn, though after a while you wouldn't be able to tell what's inside. Very well presented dish. There was a total of 8 raviolis which was a reasonable portion size. It's a little on the salty side, but not too salty that you would stop eating. Rating: 7/10 The Agio e olio was a let down. It was not the most flavourful, the best part of it was the parmesan topping. This dish lacked complexity in flavour. Rating: 3/10 Overall, Food: 7/10 Ambience: 7/10. It's good for large groups. Staff are very friendly, this is a place I will return.

Our first time to Chez F. A comfortable but basic setting uplifted by the staff; totally attentive without hovering, engaging and knowledgeable. We like that. The food; linguine and lamb on this visit was very good and the portions were rather large. Totally value for money. We will be going again.

It has been a while since visiting Chez Frederic. The restaurant itself is unchanged and has a nice clean decor with ornamental plants on and around tables. The food flavours is good, but I have some lack of knowledge of French Pasta. Previously the portions were very generous, which was good for our big appetites. They are now a reasonable size but it could disappoint some of the previous customers who expect a large serving. I plan to go back and try the lamb shanks next time.

Not being from the Canberra area, I found this restaurant after a google and saw great reviews, so booked a table. It was very easy to get a table on a Sunday night. The few staff that were there were friendly; the chef even brought us our table water and was so nice. The food was incredible - highly recommend the duck fat roast potatoes! The atmosphere was super chill too. Highly recommend this place!

We always love it when we dine at Chez Fred's. Amazing pastas, great Mains and the friendly staff always have great recommendations

We went yesterday- Saturday .The food was amazing and would go back for the food again. However, we had a waitress who took our order and she was quite rude. Luckily, the food made up for her extremely poor service. She had no smile and we felt rather unpleasant after she took our order. However, there was a waiter, he was really nice and he looked like the boss/manager there.

Chicken prosciutto ravioli with creamy mushrooms....yummmmmmilciouly cooked to perfection. Thank you Chef Frederic staff. Awesome service 👏 👌

Used to do amazing duck ravioli and be reasonably affordable. But the service has gone downhill over the last 6 months. Sometimes they have sold out of the duck ravioli; sometimes they haven't even started making it at dinner time (7pm). Someone tried to give me a light beer instead of the beer I ordered. Orders get lost and everyone just seems a bit fresh. It's a real shame because it used to be something of a highlight for Italian in Canberra.

We came here for dinner with a work trip. Recommended by the hotel we stayed at. First, staff are lovely. We ordered garlic bread and pasta dishes, with desserts. For how quick it came out, everything was obviously prepared and just needed reheating on the stove, although, wait, it did appear to be actually homemade pasta and fillings. I had the ravioli with a chicken filling which was really nice. Another of my colleagues had the gnocchi which was also nice flavour, but the gnocchi just needed to be rolled out and kneaded a bit more, still, the sauce was good and gnocchi heated well. Didn’t like the garlic bread. Far far far too much olive oil drowned the cheap French bread. Yuck. I would definitely come here for a quick lunch but not a dinner. Again, the staff are absolutely lovely. Would recommend as while only three circles, you can’t go wrong.

Ordered the loaded crab fries, cheeseburger gnocchi and spinach ravioli. Crab fries consisted of a melted cheese slice, a oily sauce and over cooked potato all contributing to a slightly off putting texture. The gnocchi was not much better, chalky in consistency topped with bolognese with masterfoods mustard poured over the top. Felt as if this dish was more about being on trend than a considered balancing of flavours. Spinach ravioli was the best of the bunch but was still overly rich and oily. Very disappointing considering the restaurants high reputation.

Loved it. It's got a laid back vibe, industrial kind of feel, some diy feels, which must help keep it affordable.
It's not a large restaurant and it's popular, so it pays to book.
We went as guests of a huge Chez fan, she loves the marinara and it didn't disappoint. All our meals were lovely, service was friendly and we'd be happy to return to try some other dishes.

Although seems bit pricey at first, the pasta is delicious and the servings are so generous. This is not pasta you can make at home. Would definitely recommend their gnocchi; very rich but not in a way that would bloat you. Would definitely come here again every time I go to Canberra.

Okay for something cheap and quick. Very casual, found a good range of pasta dishes and wines. Service was average, forgot about our garlic bread. Actual pasta was undercooked and clay-like. Sauce very oily. 1 prawn in my seafood marinara. Serving size is good. Price isn't bad. Have their own shiraz which was lovely.
Subsequent visits: a big improvement. I liked the ravioli - the filling was a bit bland and just tasted of plain spinach. The seafood carbonara however was fantastic, very fresh and well cooked.

We couldn't find any good pasta dishes so far and end up disappointed every single time we had one. But we stumbled to this restaurant randomly and decided to give it a try, and damn yeah it was delicious, tasty and portion wise it's huge! I must say that my boyfriend made a good decision at that night. Lol

best place to eat, every time ive eaten here the food has been 10/10 get anything with the pink sauce you wont be disappointed!! alot of negative reviews on here for service and the way its set up, but i just want to say the service is very laid back including the space which is what makes it so unique and different, its also extremely well priced for what you are getting! i actually love the set up and return here all the time now ! this is the place to be 5/5 everytime guys!!

Great food - our table of 4 were very happy with our dishes. The glasses were a little dirty and the table water was warm. But the servings were generous and nice ambiance. Could improve with menus at the table so you're not hanging out at the counter holding up the line
Jet
Overrated. Decent meal however below average service. It took 20 minutes for the restaurant to find for us clean water glasses. Our pastas lacked seasoning, on request we finally got pepper but we're given an empty bottle. Dude with green hair serving our table dropped the garlic bread on the dirty table outside and kept it back on the serving plate.
Not returning again.

Ambience:3.0
Food: 3.0
Service:2.0
VFM:2.5

Absolutely perfect meal, the price is unbeatable and it was by far the best pasta I've eaten in Canberra! Grab a bite from here, you won't regret it.

You pay when you order, so there’s no problems with splitting bills. It is also clearly popular for take-away. My favourite dish was the Duck Ravioli – I have to go back for that again!. Duck ravioli w/ leeks & pink sauce $19.50. But for a smaller meal the 1/2 Lamb Shanks was great value as it came with two sides of your choice

Very tasty pasta dishes and the lamb and barley? Dish was fantastic
Service was very average - and tables not very comfortable
Probably better for takeaway as the food was very good

We ordered Spaghetti Bolognese and the balsamic roast veg to take home after a long day. Got enough for the 2 of us for maybe 3 meals! Super good value, the biodegradable cardboard containers didn't fare so well on the walk home, but that's OK. The sauce was really nice, lots of meat, and the veg had just the right amount of balsamic.

A friend recommended this place so my partner and I went there to check it out last night. I must say it was very disappointing. Tables weren't cleared. Water bottles weren't topped up. My risotto was overcooked and mushy and so was my partner's pasta. And lastly for how much they charge, that bain marie really shouldn't be there.

Nice ambience, fresh pasta, and good service.
Got the duck ravioli with pink sauce.
Pink sauce was a recommendation by the guy taking the order. A good one may I just add.
Generous portion sizes at affordable prices.
Will be back for more.

One of my favorite places in Lonsdale Street. The options are great with revolving specials so you can always try something new. The biggest win for me are the good prices mixed with large portions and great flavor. I have yet to be disappointed with any of the main dishes here. The ingredients always taste fresh and the flavors really mix well with each other. There is also a wide variety of dessert options. If you had to choose one, the chocolate cheesecake is the one to go with. It's VERY rich so definitely a sharing plate. I love going here and will continue to do so!

The dish there is quite large. The seafood pasta is quite good. I love that sauce. The salad is hard to chew. But I was so surprised that they added Apple in it, which made the salad fresh.

Chez Frederic would barely stand out as you walk pass... but when you walk through the front doors, you can start to understand the charm.....

I stood around staring at their blackboard menu and finally settled for the Duck Ravioli with Leeks and Pink Sauce topped with Parmesan Cheese with no extra cost (mainly because nothing else screamed out to me on the menu). The pasta came out boiling hot. I had to let it cool down before attempting to ingest any. The service only brings out the food and everything from there onwards is self serve. The ravioli came out looking like it was served to me at a friends house. The ravioli was thin, a bit mushy in texture but overall decent enough. The sauce was slightly sweet and paired beautifully well with the pasta.

At $19.50 for the dish, the portion size was a bit stingy. The sauce masked the ravioli count. To be honest, my review leans slightly skewed as it also reflects the fact I waited 22 minutes for my pasta to come out and I was getting hangry... and the fact I sat near the kitchen where the waft of food kepting teasing my senses... it truly did not help the cause.

I noticed not many people dine here alone.. as it made a better venue to dine as a group with friends. Luckily they had some benches by the window where I can enjoy people watching. The place had a great overall atmosphere.... with the ordering area to be a bit more of a canteen style but the indoor dining resembled a contemporary, chic, fine dining venue. They even offered outdoor seating to enjoy the prolonged sunlight.

With the service being a bit hit and miss, the wait times being slightly longer than I'm happy with and the portion size slightly below average I'd probably would not return on my own... but maybe a revisit is in order when some friends from out of town are here.

What a nice place!

The food focuses on sharing style dishes and the servings were generous - you would not miss out going as a group. The food was rich, filling, and tasty as well - and I never thought I would say that about a kale salad. I felt we got immense value for the cost.

The venue itself was warm, cosy, and bustling without feeling crowded. My only criticism (if you could call it that) is that the acoustics did make for a noisy venue once at capacity, but in the summer months I expect this will be less of a problem as the windows are opened up.

Finally, the service was solid - the staff were friendly and attentive without being in-your-face.

I would happily recommend Chez Frederic as a place to eat with a few friends or a group.

Banquet dinner on Friday night was fantastic - great, busy vibe and mountains of delicious high quality grub! Thanks for putting us up Chez Freds, was a great way to start the weekend.

Great hipster atmosphere, fantastic customer service. Food was presented nicely however not palatable! I ordered the Ravioli- it tasted bland and like the mass pre-cooked meals they serve at hospitals. My cousin ordered the lasagne which didn't taste much better. Salt did nothing to improve the situation. I ate maybe one quarter before I felt sick. Left feeling hungry and wanting. This would be a great eatery if they were to improve the food situation.

Lovely little eatery with a buzzing atmosphere!! Ordered purely from the herbivore menu - we had spinach and ricotta ravioli in both a mushroom and the Napoli sauce. Also had the eggplant parmigiana and the Aglio e lio. Probably enjoyed the ravioli the best, the Aglio was abit boring - definitely needed more flavour! The eggplant was also good - came with baked spuds and cooked grated veggies! Garlic bread was also delightful!

Loved it!!!! one side just looks like a simple take away shop..the other side is actually super fancy and nice. sat on the table with the sudoku on it and was provided with texter to play while a short wait for the food.
Pasta and beouf was super saucy and tasty! very filling as well!!!

They have three vegetarian options and two of them are pretty good. The eggplant parmigiana and ravioli is pretty good but the spaghetti is tad oily. The eggplant parmigiana is my favourite it comes with some rustic potato wedges. It's the one in the bottom left hand side of the photo.

Not great.. Had porkbelly risotto. Was hoping they could pull it off. They couldn't.

Also what's with the paper plates?

Stunned by sheer stupidity. We visited on a Saturday night and dined in. I ordered the sweet potato gnocchi, what I was served can only be described as a cake batter like goo. I showed this to the server who took it to the chef. Moments later, I had the same plate of food put in front of me and told 'yes it is raw, but the others should be cooked'. I asked who the manager on duty was, and was given a name. When I asked to speak with the manager I was told they were not available. I was then taken into the kitchen to speak to the chef, who again told me the rest of the gnocchi on the plate should be cooked. I reached over, grabbed a knife and proceeded to cut each gnocchi open to demonstrate that they were not cooked. At this stage the chef gave the excuse that he was busy. I finally demanded a refund, but was shocked by how little pride the chef displayed as he did not display any kind of embarrassment of serving and then re-serving raw food.
All in all, only dine here if you want a bout of food poisoning and expect to walk out dumber then you walked in!

...some table service is better than none at all. I’m not a fan of restaurants who claim to have table service but then make you grab your own menus, seat yourselves, and order at the counter. This is the way in which my experience at Braddon’s Chez Frederic began. The café intrigued me for months. Was it a French bistro or a quaint coffee shop?...As I walked into the restaurant, I felt as if I had stepped inside a trendy school cafeteria. In one room I was to order my meal and then seat myself in the side room which was filled with long marble tables, stools, and a marble bar against the front window. I was greeted warmly as I entered, and I was led to one end of the share tables where a small sign marked my reservation. That was where Chez Frederic’s service ended.

Review. We ordered lasagne and a filled naan bread dish. Both were very ordinary. I realise this is a "cheap n cheerful" restaurant ... but the lasagne tasted like it had been sitting on a heated surface for hours, probably from lunchtime (we ate at 7pm). The naan dish was lukewarm and uninspiring and the mixed salad totally underwhelming, soggy with a ready made sauce chucked over the top. A pity because the setting has potential, but they need to improve their culinary skills lots before we will go back again ... 2/10 for food.

Loved it. My daughter recommended this place for take-away food i.e. order your take-away and relax with a glass of wine while you wait - very civilised - we've now had both take-away and have dined in. We loved both - good sized delicious meals and we;ve only every had great food and very friendly service. Thoroughly recommend this restaurant to everyone

Best gnocchi I've ever had! And awesome staff.

Duck Ravioli. Not over powering in duck flavors, a mix between a tomato & carbonara sauce. Not too big not too small just right & they tell me it's home made - awesome!

-----14 Oct, 2014-----

Great food. I travel to ACT every month & am regularly disappointed with the restaurants I try.

Chez Frederic not only provided great service full of suggestions ( I ended up with the home made duck ravioli- which was delish)

The price was great it was $33.50 for a main meal, dessert & cider.

NB: Considering I was at a restaurant on the same street last night that charged $32 for a main that was huge but not full of flavor $14 for an average desert.

I never have time to write reviews but I felt I really should this time considering what I stumbled upon.

Thank you to the lovely staff, my busy working day was topped off with this meal! The waiter told me this will be the best duck ravioli you'll put in your mouth, as casual & weird as he made it sound- he was right. :)

Sarah, Sydney.

Loved it - thank you. Loved the eggplant meal for herbivores. Plus the cheese had a non-animal rennet and was therefore actually vegetarian friendly. My friends had the duck ravioli and the potato gnocchi. The duck was great. The sweet potato gnocchi not so much. However, after giving them some frank feedback, they helped us to re-order at no extra charge and my friend was happy with the ricotta and spinach ravioli. They looked after us and all our dietary requirements!!

I suggest letting them know if you're really disappointed with the meal.

Great customer service, great flavour and nice atmosphere. Will be going back for more very soon!

Eurotrash. This was the worst dining experience I have had in a long time. Undercooked and underwhelming sweet potato gnocchi and dry beef bourguignon served on tacky paper plates. Far too expensive for such a shockingly bad dishes. It was edible and I nearly managed to finished the sticky and stodgy pile of gnocchi I ordered, but I only did so having paid so much for it. I ordered my Dad the beef bourguignon after the suggestion from the not so helpful waiter. I contemplated going somewhere else because the mains seemed far too heavy. The waiter assured me it was nice and light served with a refreshing salad (I would hardly call some grated carrots and cabbage much of a salad). This was the worst beef bourguignon I have ever seen. In fact, I didn't even know it was possible to mess it up so badly. The beef was so dry. The sauce tasted like the wine had not been given enough time to reduce... It was indefinitely the hideously ugly cousin of the classical french stew.
If you're in the area, I would strongly advise you try the other far nicer and better value establishments along the same street.
Two very big thumbs down.

Great food. Friendly and helpful staff.. I dined here with some friends. They have an awesome selection of pastas and wines. Just be aware it is fairly casual. You'll get paper plates and cutlery. Biodegradable, I guess. My friend even commented that this place is better value and service than Jamie's Italian down the road. Will definitely dine here again.

Great place - good value. I have been to Chez Frederic's a few times now - my favourite is the scallopini dish but the chicken chilli meatballs are also fantastic. The portions have always been good and the service people friendly and helpful. I have recommended it to lots of my friends and they have also been happy with the food and service.

Went there based on proximity and Urban Spoon rating; seemed highly rated and cheap.
Had two very tired children to feed.
It was obvious they were petite girls, who obviously wouldn't eat a great deal. Despite this the waitress wasn't switched on to seeing that a single meal would suffice, since they did not apparently offer kids serves. End result was 2 massive Spag Bogs hardly touched.
On top of a Pumpkin Gnocci that was like cardboard and a bill not far south of $100, I felt compelled to share.
Seems like a pace to go with friends, but not a small family.
The Waitress did offer take away containers when I went to pay the bill, but flying out in the morning made it a non option

Not the best. We went here for lunch after hearing great reviews. We ordered 3 meatball subs, the bbq ribs and scallop spaghetti. After a 30 minute wait, the waiter came over to tell us that they did not have any meatballs and instead we would be getting bolognese mince and sauce on the subs.
After around 45 minutes our food came out on paper plates (we get it, it's the trendy thing). In a nutshell, here is what each person thought of the food.
Meatball Subs - small servings and it was a disappointment to not have the meatballs. It was essentially mince and sauce on a piece of bread.
BBQ Ribs - big serving but there was not a lot of meat on the bones, besides this the plum/bbq sauce was great and this was easily the best dish ordered.
Scallop Spaghetti - big thick scallops, but unfortunately this was the only good thing about the dish. The 'freshly made pasta' tasted like the easy macaroni and cheese pasta you get at the supermarket.

Very disappointed.
Brett
For someone who advertises freshly made pasta. They were very short of being good. When people go to dinner they expect it to be better than home. I MAKE BETTER CARBONARA!! The paper plates and wooden cutlery further deplete the atmosphere in the uninviting restaurant. Terrible. Don't eat here.

Tiny servings - But not any more!. **This is a revised review**
After going back and seeing much more enthusiastic and friendly staff, I am happy to change my previously negative review.

Portions are now a decent size, flavour is great, and I will be returning to Chez Frederic any time I crave good Italian take away.

Thanks for taking on the feedback guys.

Tried their pasta dishes and it was decent. However it was really small portion and not worth what you pay for. And at least have some proper cutlery when you are charging 20 dollars for a pasta dish.

I recently went to Chez for lunch with my brother in law, we had the chicken meatballs with pasta, juicy and plump balls accompanying perfectly cooked pasta was our first shared meal. We were blown away by the portion sizes! Following the pasta we shared the pork ribs, which had have I had my eyes closed I could have sworn I was in Europe! strong bold flavours accompanying succulent "off the bone" pork with some crisp potatoes and salad on the side. An outstanding addition to Lonsdale street and to the Canberra scene. Well done Chez :)

Yummy, fresh, and cheap!. I love this place!! Delicious, fresh pasta at super reasonable prices! I actually really love the slightly industrial feel of the place and the big share tables, it's super simple and no-frills, but with great quality food and friendly service- perfect!

Great little place. Came here last Sunday night with some friends to celebrate my birthday whilst visiting Canberra. The concept sounded interesting from the website, but I was pleasantly surprised with the delightful decor and extensive menu (so hard to decide, so many good options!).

Couldn't go past the ribs, which were delicious and so tasty. Best thing was the price! Being from Perth you'd easily pay double and I'd still be happy to! Great food at a great price with great service, we were the last ones still at the restaurant and the staff didn't say a word until we were ready to leave.

Highly recommend.

Environmentally-friendly place. We went in as a group of four and ordered two dishes - pork ribs with mash potatoes and duck ravioli. The wait for the food is longer than I expected, considering we were the first one to arrive and there was only another group coming in after us. When the two dishes were brought out, the waiter also considerately gave us four sets of (cool, disposable) cutlery in brown paper bags. Both dishes are divine! I will definitely come back to try more on their menu!
Jarrod
Awesome food. Great value ribs as well as awesome chicken-chilli meatballs with pappadelle :).

Great concept, well executed.. Had a great dinner with a large group of friends here on Friday night. Really enjoyed everything about this place but most of all THE FOOD. I had the pork spare ribs, which were brilliant. The lamb shanks and duck ravioli were also highly regarded by my fellow diners. I was pretty impressed with the menu and the prices - from memory there were no mains (or very few) over $20.

Dining in is pretty no frills, with basic sides and your order served on paper plates (albeit very classy ones, that don't look like paper plates at all) with disposable cutlery. I found all of this kind of refreshing, the no frills approach cuts out other distractions and keeps the focus on good food.

Other highlights include the sleek fit-out with cool little details like whisks and ladles turned into light fixtures. It looks like a lot of thought has gone into everything here, and I think it's paid off.

My current favourite Italian place in town. So far I have tried: aglio olio, spaghetti meatballs, pesto gnocchi, pork ribs and lamb shank with roasted potatoes. I love them all (except gnocchi because I don't like the gnocchi in general). Aglio Olio is very nice. They are not overpriced too.

Over salty beef bourguignon - will stay away from that dish

Love, love, love!!!! Right.... Love, love, love!!!!
Right from when we walked in I was happy with this new place;)
Great big hi from the chef and it smelt wonderful!!
I had the hand made gnocchi and it was amazing, creamy and so full of flavour!! My man had the chicken catetori, he lived it and both were very big serves!!
I also had a wonderful glass if risling not to exy and the boy had the best cider I have ever tasted. It was called black cat in French, yumm yumm!!
Also loved the bew fit out, lovely music and cool tables;(
All up I really enjoyed my night;)
Yumm yumm!! I wish u the best of luck!!

When I read the concept for Chez Frederic on their website, I was already a convert – simple, good food without the frills, and, bonus, takeaway encouraged! Takeaway lamb shanks? Yes, please. ...I will be bringing visitors to Canberra here as an example of how this city gets food, service and ambience just right.

There was a generous serve of gnocchi and I was impressed with the very large fresh pieces. I could smell the strong cheesy flavour as this was placed in front of me. So it's not surprising that the blue cheese was quite strong from the first mouthful. I could taste the saltiness of the prosciutto but the cheese was definitely the dominant flavour. Great for strong cheese lovers!

The pastas are faaantastic - I think its the sauce. Creamy mushroom sauce and napoletana sauce together is good, try it. Really, just do it. Definitely going to hit up this place more often.

I’ll be the first to admit it: even after scouring the website , I don’t quite get what Lonsdale Street’s latest offering, Chez Frederic, is all about. It’s not until we arrive that I really appreciate exactly what this concept – what I think is the first of its kind in Canberra – intends, and achieves. On a second look, it’s right there in front of me. Chez Frederic describes itself as “licensed gourmet take away … dine in … catering” right there on its homepage, but I miss it. We book a table for four, and they politely inform us that they don’t usually do tables for under eight, but they’ll make an exception for us on their second night. After drinks at its down-the-road neighbour, Debacle, we arrive outside the floor to ceiling glass windows and pause before we venture in. Another couple is looking at the menu outside and one says, “This is just takeaway” before walking away. We’ve got a table booking (!), so I already know they’re mistaken. Inside, we’re greeted warmly as we perus
Tales Of A Confectionist
One particularly lazy Thursday, with my head being preoccupied with other thoughts (still food based of course), I felt particularly drained and thought it was the perfect time to try out Chez Frederic as they do gourmet take away (you can also dine in). I wasn’t in any rush at all when I headed to Braddon around 6pm, I drove up and down the street three times but all the car parks were taken (even the dodgy ones) all along Lonsdale street and the perpendicular streets as well. I was forced into lots of U-turns and finally gave up and drove to the outside car park of the Canberra Centre across from the petrol station. It was a quick stroll just past the construction site next to the Civic pub before I walked to the front of the restaurant. Simple clean decor with a nice concise menu . It was empty when I got there but there were plenty of ‘reserved’ signs on the tables . An easy to change specials board . I adore their creative use of ladles and tea light candles . I was greeted by a

I enjoyed the risotto and Little E did too. It had nice amount of seafood, and it wasn’t overly salted either. I normally don’t order risotto as they tend to be quite a hit-and-miss. So when I get a good one, I know. This one was good. The portion was huge, though for the price ($19.50) you kinda want it big.
