Review Snag Stand Woden - Canberra

It was ok. The hot dog was as expected, and the chips were nice and crisp, but the selection of drinks was pretty terrible, especially when a 275mL lemon squash carries a $1 premium over a 375mL coke. Given the salt in the meal, I was soon looking for another drink. The other thing I didn't automatically like was that they buried the hot dog under the chips instead of putting them in something else, like a paper bag. Oh, and get the dipping sauce. The chips are like mini wedges - made for it.

The chips are good if hot but the burgers and snags would be a lot better if the rolls were fresh everytime I try one the rolls are always stale - a Bunnings sausage sizzle is fresher

I tried the Swiss and Mushroom Burger and that is the burger I ever have.

Since I was already at the mall I decided to finally visit a place that has been on my list for a long time: the Snag Stand. I am fascinated by American food. Especially as it seems to be one of the few cuisines we have ready access to in Australia. The Snag Stand specialises in gourmet hot dogs, although you can also get burgers.

Burgers I can get anywhere so it was a gourmet hot dog I wanted to get in my belly. This was a hard choice to make. Do I go for an American classic hot dog? Or one of the European versions with sauerkraut or chorizo? Or the very trendy Wagyu beef? In the end I went with a good 'ol Chicago dog, which seems to mostly consist of layers and layers of different kinds of pickles. The bread was a highlight, being really light, fluffy and freshly baked. The frankfurt kind of reminded me of a kids birthday party but the shear array of garnishes on it did elevate it somewhat. I enjoyed it but I have to admit I didn't finish it because I also fell pray to one of their sides: the infamous chilli cheese fries.

Hot dog franchise at the Westfield Woden food court that specialises in (their own words) 'Haute dogs' ie Hot dogs with a gourmet twist. Unfortunately this Canberra branch isn't as popular as the Sydney CBD Westfield counterpart probably due to it being more expensive compared to the other outlets in the food court. The hot dogs are quality though, personal favourites are the Toulouse (sautéed shrooms and onions), Wagyu beef (mashed potato on top) and Chicago (pickles, onions and relish). Combo deals are available with fries and drink but not with onion rings unfortunately. Gourmet burgers are also available.

Love the wagyu beef sausage! It has garlic mash, sautéed onions and gravy on top. So good! Didn't like the kransky as it was too fatty. Swiss bratwurst wasn't that tasty either. Pretty fast service considering the number of people queuing up. Gluten free buns available too. The chips are awesome and crunchy each time, best chips I've had in a while - they're 100% Tasmanian russet potatoes. Am in the process of slowly trying every item on the menu. Definitely recommend the wagyu beef.

Snag Stand sells 'haute dogs' – artisanal and hand crafted sausages. The menu has changed slightly since my last meal here, and now they’ve added a new line - Haute Burgers. This time, I chose the Nacho Libre ($7.90) – smoked bratwurst with cheesy sauce, tomato and crushed up nachos on a toasted brioche bun.
