Review Bach Dang Restaurant - Canley Vale

Raymund Wong
This place is over packed with table. So bad that the waitress or waiter can’t even get through and would keep hitting the chairs when they walked passed. To make it worse, they are normally carrying hot food and you really wish they won’t drop it on you. The food is ok, tasty. The service is only so-so. But you have to be prepared to order soon after you get the menu because the waiter would keep pushing you to order. This place is OK.

Nice restaurant interior but average food at best. Seafood is basic for the prices they charge. Crab and fish are cooked well but pricy ($100/pound). Viet dishes like fried rice and spring rolls just average. Service is good.

I’ve been to Bach Dang a couple of times for special celebrations. The food was hit-and-miss, some were better than others. Most diners order seafood spring rolls, I guess it’s BD speciality. The seafood dishes (scallops, fish etc) tasted good though they were smaller in sizes. Pricing remains cheaper than other restaurants. The function feels old and germy. It’s a busy environment so it is common to see staff rushing around. P.S. Foreign diners, even for Asian people, there is little to non-communication from staff. Rest assured the feeling of you being ignored is unintentional. Plus some staff can’t speak English very well.

I repeatedly come back here with my friends because the food is so good! The staff are the owners so the level of service is great each and every time. We had the mud crab and pipis this time but their crab claw, sugarcane wrap dish, honey prawns, ginger shallot oysters, grilled pork dishes and every other dish that we have tried here has been spot on!! Would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

We tried this restaurant for a quick lunch on Saturday recently and the place was not busy, maybe due to Covid-19 situation. We ordered two dishes i.e. the grilled beef w/ rice roll wrap (bo-dun) and the paw-paw salad w/ prawns, jelly-fish and pork belly. Both dishes were nicely prepared and we liked them, especially since they're quite rare dishes that are hard to find in other Vietnamese places. The customer service is quite good while the ambience / facility are great. The place is brightly lid and spacious plus has a clean, decent rest-rooms for both genders. Prices on the menu are a bit more expensive than other Vietnamese places in the area, but not excessively and can be understood due to better ambience / facilities. You can pay with credit cards without any surcharge, another bonus for customer-friendly service.

The food was quite ok and the prices are reasonable, although the wait staff seem a bit disorganised and slow. We tried to order the "Banquet for two" (specifically pointing at it in the menu) but the waiter didn't seem to understand the concept and kept referring us to the entree's and which one we wanted. It took another waiter to come over and explain to him that there are 4 set courses and that you don't get to choose individual parts. The rice came first, shortly followed by the entre and the chicken. The hot pot came later and the gas lasted about 3 minutes before running out. It's hard to get someone's attention because they are all nearly RUNNING around the restaurant. Overall, decent food (and plenty of it) but let down by the service.

Seafood spring rolls are a must. All other dishes tend to be slightly more expensive than your regular Vietnamese resultant but are always well prepared and delicious. Staff are friendly but tend to seat you near thoroughfare or near the loud kitchen so just ask for another table.

been coming here with my family for over a decade, probably the best place to have vietnamese food for dinner in the area.

When we arrived here for my sisters 21st birthday. We didnt expect the good food. Her boyfriend really knew what to get. and Just wow the food was amazing.<br/>Really big spacious environment.

We have been regular customers here for a while and I was blown away tonight by the food here. It’s always high quality and super tasty but we tried some new dishes tonight and they were spot on authentic, delicious and fresh! I love coming here for the seafood spring rolls, caramelised fish hot pot, hot and sour soup but I think you could add everything on the menu here because it’s all just that good! Can’t wait to come back!!!

Fancy place to enjoy some authentic Vietnamese cuisine in a space where it is clean and formal. Went during lunch time where there was a birthday party going on, so it was pretty uncomfortable sitting in the same room during that event. Overall the price of the food is fairly on the expensive side, food taste overall was just plain average and a rip for the price.

Like any other busy seafood restaurant, the service is always a hit and miss. There are my specific favourites which are must haves everytime I go. This occasion both food and service was good. <br/>Must haves:<br/>- Steamed oysters with soy sauce, ginger and spring onions<br/>- Seafood spring rolls<br/>- Tamarind Crab

The only place you can go for Vietnamese! Food is always fresh, the best quality and tasty! <br/>Leave your comfort zone, dive into a jelly fish salad or an avacado shake. <br/>Anything on the menu will make your mouth water! <br/>Try and get in early on a Friday or Saturday night as this place will be busy!

Bach Dang is one of the more clean, modern and spacious Vietnamese/Chinese function restaurants in the area. Service is ok, there are so many workers and when it’s busy, their customer service is not consistent. In saying that, I had no complaints about the service that I received on this particular occasion! <br/><br/>We only ordered the braised lobster with XO sauce and noodles and it was super tasty!! Definitely satisfied my cravings but it’s way better to go in a group as just this one dish between two was a bit too expensive.

My first time eating Beef of 7 Kinds was at Bach Dang, and it was fantastic; I've since been back twice, once at lunchtime, when we had, among other things, crispy salt and pepper whitebait and durian smoothie, and another time at dinner where, because there were just two of us (Beef of 7 Kinds requires min. 4 people, I believe), we ordered some other dishes instead, including Campfire Beef; everything tasted fabulous. FYI Bach Dang has been around for decades but it was upgraded not too long ago, and it now looks like a very elegant family restaurant with large round tables, much like what you find in Chinatown.

We tend to stick to our favourites, we’d been past Bach Dang so many times we thought we’d give it a try too. It’s much larger than it may first appear, there’s even a function room tucked away on the side, and the place is bustling with large groups when we visit on a Saturday night. Menu-wise, it is quite similar to next door (Hai Au Lang Nuong), just with a slightly nicer ambience and modern décor.

My family and I dined here for a semi-formal dinner. We came here on a Tuesday night and so it wasn't too busy. I associate Bach Dang for their seafood dishes and so we ordered the following: seafood spring rolls (contains shrimp/scallop/fish), oysters with vermicelli noodles, tamarind prawn, mud crab, buns and fish cooked two ways: in a sweet and sour steamboat soup and in a caramelised claypot. All our dishes tasted fresh and I liked that they weren't too heavy on their use of salt. I would recommend the seafood spring roll, the tamarind crab and the oysters. These dishes were a standout to me on the night. As many users have mentioned, service here is quite poor so take that into consideration before you come.

Food was average for the asking price and like others have said the customer service is terrible. The waiter tried to 'upsell' on some of the dishes even though we clearly told him exactly what we wanted and declined his suggestions on several occasions which appears to be common amongst other reviewers.<br/><br/>When we declined his suggestions he told us to go to maccas instead. Even though he was joking, it felt really unprofessional given the "upper dining" atmosphere this restaurant is trying to set.<br/><br/>Out of a total of 8 dishes ordered, we were given 2 incorrect dishes and 2 dishes never arrived due to 'technical issues' and our drinks were 'forgotten'. The biggest mistake was that the 'soft' yellow noodle with braised beef came out with crispy noodles rather than soft noodles. When we raised this with the staff they tried argue against us saying it is soft noodles. Come on....everyone on the table is from an Asian background and we all verified it was crispy noodles. Once again, very unprofessional from the staff.<br/><br/>My advice as a fellow foodie is to walk to a different restaurant on the same street and you will experience better customer service and quality food. If you're after real seafood than you better off going to one of the other 2 seafood restaurants on the same street.<br/>

Fantastic service and yummy food. One of the cleaner seafood restaurants within the area. We had the pork and prawn salad, beef salad, salted duck egg crab, pigeon, seafood spring rolls and the sour soup. Loved everything except the sour soup - it was way too sweet!

Expensive and dishonest.<br/><br/>You can see from these pictures that the mud crabs we ate were not much bigger than 700-800g - the claws are tiny! Unlike other Chinese seafood restaurants, the waiter did not bring the crab out to show us and advise us of the weight before putting the order through. We were hit with a bill at the end of the dinner for 1.4kg per crab.<br/><br/>All of this aside, the food is decent.

If I could give a 0 for a restaurant it would be for this one here. We started off ordering a couple of drinks and a few dishes for dinner and as the food started to rolling out we realised that they had forgotten our drinks. After receiving our drinks they had brought out fried pork chop when we ordered braised pork chop and instead of fixing our order they thought it’s be a bright idea to use the fried pork chop they had accidentally made and throw it in some braise pork sauce which made it a salty mess since the fried pork chop is already salted as hell. After we had already finished our meal our last dish still hasn’t made it to the table and when we asked to cancel the dish the waitress put up a fight and said “we’ll check/make it now” even though we refused and had no other food to eat it with. When the bill came I asked to speak to the manager and told him we did not eat the fried/braised pork chop concoction they had provided us because it was inedible and also complained about the poor service; he then removed the pork from our meal but went on to talk about my family-in-law and I as he wasn’t aware I spoke Vietnamese. Very unprofessional and money-hungry restaurant that don’t know how to admit their wrongs.

Booked for a birthday party for my little cousin here. The table arrangement was poorly organised- they weren't happy in helping us choose which tables were best for our situation and got angry when we wanted to move tables. In particular the boss was rude and acted quite up himself (sorry, not sure of a more polite way to say it). When we ordered food he asked us "why don't you guys order food properly so you get a proper meal?". Additionally when we went to pay he was like "and the tips?" (basically asking for the tips) in a really rude tone. Food was also not that great, probably due to the service we got. The chicken was also so salty. Nothing special anymore compared to what they used to be like.

My absolute fav tamarind crab! They do it the best hands down. The sauce is to do die for and also goes well with rice. Papaya salad is quite nice also. Would definitely recommend getting these two dishes.

I ate here with my family for fathers day and it was quite packed when we got there and we didnt book so I recommend booking to gurantee a seat. The food was average and a bit overpriced in my opinion. We got 1.2kg crab ($108), fried rice($24) (not sure which one but it was yellow), mongolian beef ($23) and chicken and sweet corn soup ($6.50). The crab was nice and had a lot of meat inside. The fried rice was a bit lacking in taste but it was quite a big portion so be prepared to share it. The mongolian beef was average. The soup was smaller than I expected. It was quite hard to get a servers attention despite there being so many of them. Parking was easy because of the large parking complex built and there is also a train and bus station near by for anyone who like public transport. The crab was obviously messy to eat but they provided wet towelettes to clean ourselves up as well as complimentary rockmelon to finish off our meals. The tablecloths were paper which I found a bit odd since tney had normal tablecloths underneath it.The atmosphere is quite lively and loud. I noticed there were a few events running as well (possibly why it was hard to get staffs attention) but the experience was overall nice and I would probably return in the future.

Situated in the quieter streets of Canley Vale. Vietnamese food specialising in seafood. They have a vast menu selection, with undeniable fresh seafood. <br/><br/>We are there on a Sunday lunch as typical we stir away from meat so this was the perfect location to satisfy our needs and cravings. You can't go wrong with some salt and pepper fried fish especially when it's accompanied with some fresh chilli and shallots. We also ordered some scallops, which never disappoint they had more of a fresh feel with fresh shallots sitting on top emerised in soy sauce (yum drooling just thinking about it) lastly we have the salt and pepper squid, what a way to start lunch with something fried. That dipping sauce was sensational that we had to ask for more.<br/><br/>Overall this restaurant is quite pricey then what you may expect to spend at a Vietnamese restaurant, but when your getting seafood cooked like this who is complaining.

Sunday evening and the restaurant was well patronised, many tables with birthday celebration gatherings.  The several young staff were quick on their feet, spoke a variety of languages including Vietnamese and English and were well dressed.    In a two shop space, the interior was modern and you could see the street outside through windows.   There is easy ground level access from the street.Welcome to Bach Dang, understandably an institution amongst the Indo-Chinese Australian community and which has been serving food for many years.  Even those outside this community have ventured here and generally provide a positive experience of this restaurant.    I could hear Teochew being spoken, this is a language of southern China, especially amongst Bach Dang's diners.  Most tables had steamboat going.   It was a boisterous atmosphere, with smiling grandparents doting over their exuberant grand kids, with bearded brown haired hipsters seated beside their doe eyed black haired angels.   Even on one wall were letterings announcing a birthday for some captain !   We looked out for the cakes - one was outstanding traditional, nothing like what we expected.  It was round shaped but did not have sponge or cream, perhaps jelly like layers but I do not really know. The steamboat had a most satisfying flavour, not too plain and not over spiced or chillied out.   It is the integrity of the stock in the soup and it had a bit of a twist with a light sourish feel, like as if tamarind was used.   The fish slices are tender, juicy and fresh.   Steamboat is communal eating - and Bach Dang echoes this best.   There is an emphasised family atmosphere but I did not feel crowded in in the spacing of tables.   There are option in varying cost levels of set menus. For entrees, we had quail, one of my favourites and Bach Dang more than delivered.  Crunchy, with the right notes of meat marinated just right.   Service is friendly.  Two of my mates who used to be in Wollongong grew up here - and they still have fond memories of Bach Dang.  I observed steamboat is popular in the Teochew heartland along the south China coast ( Shantou, not far from Hong Kong)  and Bach Dang does justice to this tradition.    The Teochews migrated to Vietnam before the latest phase settling in Australia.
Picturesque Food
Bach Dang is one of the more classy restaurants in the Canley Vale area. Upon entering, I first noticed the decor as being neat and clean. <br/>Tonight we ordered salted fried crab and some seafood rolls with mayonnaise. <br/>The crab had the right amount of salt and was very flavoursome! <br/>The seafood rolls, the prawns inside were soft and tender with a crunchy exterior. <br/>Definitely recommend the restaurant if you're okay spending some money, and after some great crab.

Easily the worst customer experience for my father's birthday dinner. My family specifically asked for a good spot in the restaurant and the manager decided to seat us in front of the kitchen entrance where waiters were constantly walking in and out with trash (metaphorically and literally). As we ordered food, the waiters rolled their eyes impatiently in a way where they'd hoped we'd leave as soon as possible. The food was way below expectations with almost everything tasting bland. Dishes where you expect to be juicy and full of aroma turn out dry and tasteless; We suspect they have some foods pre-made and all they have to do is microwave it. As my family was eating the terribly made dishes, my father was rudely interrupted and told to be considerate of the waiters and move his seat; they allocated our seats and table, how dare they tell my father to move his seat?! Never eating here nor referring other to this restaurant again.

I booked three tables in the private room for a small function, the supervisor (man at the reception counter) did not mention anything about sharing this room with other people when I made the booking three weeks in advance. <br/><br/>One the day, the receptionist advised that we have to share the function room with another family (6 tables), they put our family in the back of the room. The other party had a one-man-band entertainer playing the keyboard for guesses to sing and also karaoke. Needless to say, the noise was loud, and the singers were bad. The echoes noise was loud, and the air was stuffed inside this small function room for that many people.<br/><br/>Make it worse; the banquet food was bad for $650 per table of ten. The quail was so dry; it felt like eating bones. The fried rice was pre-cooked, put in the freezer, warm up by microwave, and it was horrible. The scallop was overcooked, it tasted like rubber, and the seafood spring rolls were still cold inside. Our party was ruined!<br/><br/>The look on my friends' face said it all; I complained to the supervisor ( the same man who took my booking), but he did not even apologise to my family and me for his stuff up and unprofessional manner. I suggest the restaurant owner replaces this man ASAP and put him in the kitchen.<br/><br/>My friends and family will never go back to this place again and will pass this message to our friends. <br/><br/>If you are planning to eat or have a party at Bach Dang, don’t go there. You better eat somewhere else in Cabramatta (Vinh Phat, Bar luck) or Canley Heights (Grand Chateau seafood) where you will get a better service, open space, food and no unwanted one-man-band entertainer or karaoke.
Hey Anh
This place was terrible. incredibly rude staff who rolled their eyes and made sounds when we sat down. Before i could look at the menu they were already impatiently waiting for our order even though there were only two other ables present. i said 2 minutes. They come back and i would ask questions about what was including in the banquet and they didnt answer my questions and simply said "you get what you pay for" but i simply wanted to know what these vietnamese dishes were. Food wasn't great either

We came across this place during Easter Friday while looking for a feed. It was definitely the best Vietnamese/chinese food we've had yet. The prices were all very reasonable and the quality of the food was 10/10. The servings were generous and the staff were all very friendly. The menu was also very extensive. I think we ended up ordering 3 dishes. These were the fried tofu with garlic butter, the combination crispy noodles, and the crispy chicken with rice. My favorite was definitely the noodles. .but the tofu itself was very good as well.

The food was very Vietnamese. People who are enthusiastic and love trying new food especially Vietnamese good, should try out this restaurant. Great place for functions! :)

Growing up in this area in the 90's going out to a fancy dinner was to Bach Dang. It was the definite go to restaurant for a family treat. Coming back here even though they've had a complete makeover still brings back all those childhood memories. Maybe its because the boss man is still the first face you see when you walk in. We had the seafood spring rolls, mud crab with tamarind sauce, sour soup with fish, abalone & pigeon. The food was all good, no complaints. Service was good. Staff were all nice & friendly.

My family and I dined at Bạch Đằng on Mothers Day last year and we had a really nice experience! I always notice this restaurant on the strip of shops along Canley Vale Road because its so big, bright, white and fancy looking with its glass paneled fronts. While Bach Dang serves up Vietnamese food (foooood of my peoooopleeee) and we did order relatively casual dishes, I kept feeling like I was in a wedding reception because of how smartly the staff were dressed and the napkins were actual cloth serviettes... not paper... cloth~ (ノ´ヮ´)ノ*:・゚✧

Order the seafood spring roll. Just order the seafood springroll! It's expensive I think $6.50 each ! But worth it!!! <br/>I also asked the waitress if the oysters were sydney rock oysters. And she replied back yes. When it came out it wasn't Sydney rock, and when I asked the waitress, she said yes the oysters are from Sydney. Lol. They were pacific oysters, and needless to say I didn't finish it, I couldn't stomach it. It was not sweet at all. Plus when it came out I was missing 2 oysters.

Bach Dang is far from the casual mum-and-pop eateries that litter this strip. Since its establishment in 1982, this popular restaurant has evolved into a gleaming and modern powerhouse, a glass-fronted oasis of air-conditioning, smartly dressed waiters and real cloth serviettes -- not tissue boxes -- on every table. The dining room is filled with large tables of families and friends. You can tell this is a special occasion restaurant, and our night is punctuated with tinny blasts of piped Happy

Discriminative Pricing. Not the best customer service. We ordered the $29 per person banquet expecting the quail, fish soup but unexpectedly got fried squid and fried rice! When we asked why we got those dishes we were advised rudely it’s not the waiter’s fault but the way we ordered. Apparently, the menu is “bilingual” such that the Vietnamese and Chinese are translated directly 1:1, but not the English. It was “our fault” for not knowing this because unlike every other restaurant in the world, in the same menu section, the Vietnamese and Chinese is different to English. Because we spoke English (being Chinese doesn’t help I guess!), pointing to Banquet #2, the choice defaulted to the English menu and not the things we wanted! Rudely as well, we asked why we weren’t advised of this beforehand, the waiter said there’s a Western choice on the right column and the left was Oriental - to a customer you wouldn’t notice due the 1:1 reciprocity in list of dishes and thought it’s just a translation. Reluctance to assist and be flexible, what was more discerning was when we wanted to change the two choices with the fish soup we were advised to pay extra to cover the difference; even though the original price is identical in the Chinese version. Is this misleading the consumer? Or a new form of price discrimination strategy?<br/><br/>The food wasn’t bad at all it just wasn’t what we expected and the lack of customer service.

Venus hurstville. The waiter were so rude to us because we didn't order crab or lobster, they don't pay attention to you if you don't have a big bill. When I paid the bill they overcharged me $$$, I paid with my credit card and the bitchy cashier show her snob face to me, they prefer cash, not recommend anyone come to Bach Dang, it is a worse service, the food not any special, not worth the price

Standard. As I do reside in the south west of Sydney, I do visit similar restaurants like Bach Dang very often. The restaurant offers your variety of Vietnamese and Chinese food for an affordable price. I would recommend dining at this restaurant with a large group as they offer table banquets which include about 6 courses ranging from $400-500. In my opinion, if you're not used to the rude non-attentive staff then you're in for a big surprise! Like any other busy Asian restaurant they offer poor service. Their food is not as "succulently delicious" as they perceive it to be in the menu so don't be fooled! It's not the type of restaurant you would recommend to anybody, but if you're like myself and you're located within the area you're bound to receive some form of invitation to dine there once every now and then! However, everybody is entitled to their own opinion and this was just mine.

I found this restaurant to be lacking in every way. Firstly they seemed to somewhat racist when they put us in the back corner with the only other caucasian family eating there. The staff were either rude or didnt seem to have a clue what was going on? They started by asking my partner "you want a drink bro?". They bought out the wrong entree to begin with and when i stated that it was not what i ordered they asked me "so, you dont want this?" I asked for my orginial order. It didnt come. They bought out my main. I asked where my entree was. They bought out the first dish they had tried to serve me some 10 minutes later. They asked if i wanted it. I said no, i want what i ordered. They told me that the kitchen didnt want to make my order because the wait staff had made a mistake and it would be taken from their wages. I asked for them to please bring my entree as i really wanted to eat that dish. I continued to eat my main that was now on the table but no sign of my partners food. They bought out two more dishes we did not order and put them on our table. I explained that i had not ordered that. They got annoyed and said yes i did. This became a little bit of an argument before they picked up the meals and placed them on another nearby table. My partners meal of sizzling beef arrived and it was barely warm. So we finished our meal and asked one of the bus boys clearing a table for the bill. He quickly ran off to get us some rockmelon to have as dessert. This would have been the only nice part of my meal had he not come back holding the rockmelon to the plate with his bare dirty fingers. And to top it off the pieces were half the size of the ones being offered to other patrons. <br/>I consider myself a lover of asian cuisine as I have lived in the cabramatta area all my life but i will NEVER ever go back to such a poorly run, rude and racist restaurant. This is the worst restaurant i have ever been to.

Simple, delightful!. Went to Bach Dang for lunch with the troops. didn't really know what to expect. we ordered what was familiar to us: fried rice, pho, beef on a hot plate, seafood roll, vietnamese pancake and a papaya salad and a tamarind soup with fresh fish. service was excellent! had a very good encounter with someone I think is the owner and he had no hesitation to get his hands 'dirty'. serving up dishes, helping us fit comfortably ard the table, etc. the pho was also good! that's always a good sign for a viet restaurant!<br/><br/>We really enjoyed the food and will most certainly go back again!
