Review Okami Japanese Restaurant - Caulfield North

Antony Firmanto
Overall it was a good dining experience. We came here by booking in advance. Ordered straight from the start and finished in less than 2 hours. We expected this place to offer a bit of premium quality but it was just okay. Some food was quite good and others were just okay. Some just make you quickly feel full especially the beef meals (too hard to bite). Dessert were so pleasant. We were hoping to get a better food experience. However, the staff were attentive and helpful. This is a place where you get bangs for bucks if that's what you're after plus long chit-chat and group dining.

It isn't worth the $36.80 for all you can eat. The only items that were decent was the sashimi, sushi and the ice cream. The curry was so watery it barley had taste, the beef was like rubber and the defrosted dumpling were somehow worse than supermarket purchased ones. For almost $40 you can get your fill of good quality sushi and Japanese food at many other restraunts in Melbourne.

Recently, my friends and I visited this absolutely good Japanese restaurant with such a variety of food and just eat all. Looks like local restaurants can provide you a good experience too.

$37 for all you can eat. Yes it is great value but the food is just okay. But still 4 stars for the experience and value. Greta place to bring the kids

Been to this Okami 3 times now. It's great value, not too bad food. We have our favourites which are good. The sashimi in the sashimi sushi plate is pretty good actually. I eat plenty of it. My son really likes the teriyaki chicken offerings (sushi, sticks and diced). The Chicken Karaage is also really good and a must try. The place is busy and customer service isn't always the best but each time we encounter at least one staff member who really does their best to give you a good experience, so more than acceptable. Go there with the right expectations and you will walk out full, content and not a huge dent in your wallet.

It's good value, but some things didn't taste very fresh, with some others not being thoroughly defrosted, also. Service by the end of the second sitting becomes really slow of you're not near the bar as no waiting staff will come around the wall to check on the tables for long periods of time. Overall great value for money, and will definitely go again.

Oh heavens. Where do I begin? Thank you for such a deluxe experience. I have never encountered such deliciousness in my last four years of bumbling around this globe. My associates and I ordered a range of protein and carbohydrates and we were not dissappointed with any dish. I highly recommend this venue for any person aged 15-42 or 50-75.

Okami has refined the art of making Japanese dining simple for everyone. You just point to the menu accompanied with pictures and in a flash you have deliciously prepared food on your table. The food all round is awesome and I'm not even going to single out any particular dishes as our favourite. If the food wasn't enough for you to dine at Okami, the staff are courteous, responsive and respectful. The price of admission is great value and upon paying, it is hard not to leave a tip because you'll be overwhelmed with such a nice dining experience. Definitely our go-to place to get our Japanese fix and they never disappoint.

Would definitely recommend great value for money great food definitely go again

Did not enjoy all you can eat sushi but love the giant takeaway platters.

enjoyed a great night with my friends at Okami Caulfield, the food was tasty and the waiters are very nice and friendly! definitely will recommend to my friends and come back again!
Marita Bracun
the food was fresh, the meat very tasty and succulent
Hungry Little Dinosaur
The food is okay but it's not great. The sushi seems to be cutting corners a bit and it was very very disappointing to see their miso eggplant was just two slices for both buffet and a la carte. We went for the buffet and they started rationing our food towards the end and ended up "forgetting" some of our orders. The service was lovely though.

Probably my least favourite location of the Okami chain as the restaurant is too big for them to serve fast enough. i once waited 30 minutes for a beef carpaccio which at the Hampton and camberwell location only takes 2 minutes. I would recommend they employe more staff for this location
Oy
Great food for value! Although it's gone up a bit to 34.8 iirc not 32.8

Food came out fairly fast and service by staff was wonderful! We had an enjoyable time will definitely come back when in the mood for an all you can eat again haha! The atmosphere was also cosy with some nice chill jazzy-ish music in the background :)

This is a really good place to eat sushi and if it’s just pay and eat as much as you want you could eat so much and have so much fun eating. Thought I recommend people with younger kids to eat earlier in the afternoon as at night at dinner time it’s a bit loud and there is lots of young adults having a friends night. My personal favourites are the salmon nigiri

Gave a new try for the Japanese buffets in Caulfield branch. Fortunately, we got a place to seat even we didn’t make a booking before coming. The experience was good, the ambience was very busy and crowd, as a large groups of people come in to have dinner together. We have ordered a lot of sushi platters, entrees, main course and desserts. Overall the food was nice, it was really getting value for many orders as well, which is pay $32 for all you can eat. Will be back in the future! 🤗

Took ages to deliver my sushi platter, I ordered it first thing I sat down but I got it at the end of my meal. Not enough staff with that many customers
Disappointed

Came for dinner here with my husband. We had many plates to share. Pretty good value for money as you can order as little or as much as you like within reason. We ordered at our own leisure. And there was a little bit of a wait between some of the dishes. But can be expected on a busy Saturday night. The dishes were all good portion sizes. And there’s plenty of variety on the menu. Quality of the food was much better than I had expected. Favourite dishes were the Karaage chicken and eggplant salad.
Tammy Lee
The food tasted good. In terms of the environment, the seating that was given was very dark as it was a corner. Also, we had ordered two dishes that never came which was very disappointing. Sesame ice cream was my highlight.

Food is nice, most is really great but some average. Service is pretty poor, they aren’t very attentive, don’t clear empty plates even when you’ve stacked them up and hard to get a hold of.
Anonymous
Value for money, and the service was actually quite good. Food was also a lot better than I expected, with the exception of the 'sushi' rice which was very bad, and evidently premade. Because of this we were "scared" after with the pay for any food wastage, which really dampened the experience.

Lovely flavours and food colour that just pops. It's a great deal the all you can eat here as I've heard raving reviews from friends. First time trying this place I really didn't have an appetite arriving here but I was assured I would be eating healthy and light. The food didn't feel too heavy for me as well. Service was great the presentation of the food was fantastic. Thank you was an awesome experience.

Highlight of the evening was watching the waitress pour left over wine from glasses back into the wine bottle. 👍 I wonder what happens to left over food 🤯

Really enjoyed this place! The food was good and tasty. The service was amazing and the food came out quickly. Did the all you can eat and got an incredible about of food that was very consistent. Only negatives was the chicken quality was not very good and wanted more dessert. The dessert was good and just wished we could get more of it.

Okami has a very diversed all-you-can-eat menu ranging from sushi platters, noodles to meat and desserts. Food quality is decent for the price. The staffs were friendly but unattentive (or there might be a short of staff), most of the time I had to wait 5-10mins at the door to be noticed. I highly recommend booking in prior as the last time I went there the tables were fully booked (since 1 month before). I also recommend starving yourself for the whole day to get the most out of the menu, all worth it!

Busy popular Japanese restaurant. Set price menu with eat all you can for lunch or dinner. Our Sunday lunch was Awesome. Delicious sushi and sashimi. Chicken dishes were great as were beef prawns and tempura.

Big downfall was service. Cold and not friendly and lack of assistance meaNt waiting far too long to have plates emptied and or reorder more food.
Water was not replaced unless asked and soy sauce bottle empty.
In the past it was friendly and efficient service. Tonite we were not looked after. If you like japanese this is a great way to taste and try a variety of foods. Sharing with friends as a group is a great way to enjoy the restaurant. I’ve been 7 times and will need to consider returning.

i've been here many times. food are fresh made and every single dish is delicious ,I am kin on the chef recommed sushi and sashimi, beef carpaccio ,steak, tempura。staff are very kind, attentive and efficient。good environment to have party with friends and families。recommended to many friends. definately will come back.

The food was great, as well as the service. The price was reasonable, and the Carpaccio was exquisite. Sushi and Sashimi were really fresh. Dont forget to leave some room for the dessert Daifuku and icecream~~~
Kaseyzz
The price is reasonable ($32 pp). Generally the taste is not salty but light. Prawns are fresh and sushi r acceptable. Noodle soup is too light that seems like the noodles r basically put into the soup then absorb little soup. Based on all I tried, I will recommend the beef, steam egg, and ice cream (mocha & sesame). Please don’t sit at the corner unless you’re confident that you’re able to attract staff’s attentions easily, otherwise they will always miss your asking for help.😂😂😂

I love Japanese food and my first visit to Okami in Caulfield was a pleasant surprise. The food was fresh and tasty, the service was friendly. I only wish I hadn't decided to end the evening with the home made ice cream. I won't be specific about it, but I can only guess at a disgruntled employee. I'm would have rated my overall experience a four of it hadn't been for the ice cream.

Foodie beware this restaurant doesnt have a lot of space, its jam packed and have to booked if you wanna arrive at prime hour. The menu is simple sushi and sashimi set is nice as well as the beef and seaweed salad. Nothing taste funny nothing taste extraordinary either.
The tip is save some space on your tummy for the mochi and matcha ice cream, coz they really delicious.
Price is not too bad at 35pp, the services is not too bad, all the staff there really straightforward with the ordering and answers trying to save time to keep all your tables clean and ready for another round. Tolerable.
Overall, nice and pleasant experience and you feel good for what you spend for. 3.5/5.

Came here for a birthday dinner and booked two tables. Food came out reasonably fast and quick to fill our sake. The food is more food court quality though, not overly fancy. For an all you can eat it is reasonable value though and we would return again. Customer service needs some improvement and maybe the waitresses/waiters could learn to smile :)

The customer service is bad here. I just kindly remind the staff that the extra fee has been banned across all businesses from 01/09. However, the staff stood behind us and said we were rude. We heard that. Bad experience. Won't be there again.
Traveller123890
Been here this evening with 2 friends... we ordered the all you can eat option for 32.80$... we were able to choose anything from a vast menu.
Food was nice and quick to arrive, service was a little below average.
The staff didn't seem to be engaged with what they were doing, we waited longer for our drinks than for our food.
Overall a good experience and we wil be back for sure.
The Dan
Awesome value for money for all you can eat. When you get the menu you really do want to order everything on it. The food itself is not the greatesttttttttt Japanese food you will ever eat but it is still very good for the all you can eat experience. For Japanese all you can eat, you can't beat it.
Goldentongue
This place is not bad for the price. If you love sashimi and seaweed salad then you're in for a treat because it's all you can eat! The restaurant was quite busy and getting the staff's attention can be hard. I wouldn't say this is the best Japanese restaurant because it's quantity>quality. I guess if you're looking for a feast it's not a bad place to go.
Judy
Was craving some sushi and didn't know what to eat specifically, so the all you can eat menu is a pretty decent way of satisfying that! For 32.80 you have a good range of sushi, sashimi and fried goodness. I probably didn't eat my moneys worth, but my belly was stuffed !

Okami is one of the few Japanese restaurants in Melbourne who offer an ‘all you can eat’ style menu featuring various traditional Japanese dishes.

Basically, how it works is that you order whatever you’d like off the menu as many times as you’d like. While this sounds appealing, you may wish to order everything but be warned that any food wastage over 100g will incur an extra charge.

The service was surprisingly extremely quick even though they were pretty busy and there wasn’t much loss in quality of the food. The price is set per person at just over $30, but it was definitely worth it for what we received. If you’re not a big eater, it may be better to order ala carte, but the AYCE set is worth a go, even if its just to try the different dishes Okami have to offer.

Check out the review of Okami Japanese Restaurant in the blog post below.

Had buffet lunch there with hubby, very attentitive service, service is.reasonally fast considering it was quite busy there, not a bad place to go if you wanna Japanese feast.

讲实话,$30的寿司的确不能要求太多,不过也不至于比food court糟糕。。。所有菜色都尝了一遍,没有什么好说的,有点恶心。

在墨尔本美食上面看到这间店的广告,心里还是蛮期待的,(。ì _ í。)
不过话说回来,$30不至于难吃吧,只觉得用料都很便宜,除了服务还不错,上餐速度快以外,基本上没什么优点,ps. 人还是挺多的。。。

Ate here on a very busy Saturday night; there were a few large groups and every table was full. A bit noisy, but not impossible. Service was cheerful and good despite the crowded place. I can't understand some of the bad reviews on here, we have been there quite often and, despite the fact that it is all you can eat, the hot food is obviously cooked fresh, everything is tasty and served quickly. Around $30 pp in most other places will barely get you a main course. Here you can have plate after plate of fresh prawns, sushi/sashimi and a heap of other things for that. The BYO corkage is only $5. It is not 5 star dining, but then it doesn't pretend to be. It is the place we go when we want a simple, varied meal in a pleasant environment. Wouldn't hesitate to take a group there.

Been a few times now (at dad's request) and both times have had the all-you-can-eat option. Place gets really busy, and staff do their best as people wait (usually impatiently) for their food. Sashimi, eggplant, agedashi tofu, tempura, beef tataki were all good. Overall, food/service/atmosphere is fairly decent - exceeding expectations for buffet style Japanese.
Saladzzz
I tried my best not to expect much from this place but seriously this place has given me a horrible dining experience, especially after I tried their grilled squid. I'm very sure that it's not a real squid from its look and flavour. Sushi came with very dense and moist rice to fill me up. Sashimi was ok but you have to get them together with the sushi in a platter, and the amount of sashimi given is little. Frankly speaking I'd rather spend my $30 to get a decent dinner somewhere else.

Love this place! Been many times with so many different people who have all loved it too. Have always had the banquet and the food comes out fast and it's always delicious! I honestly don't understand why this place has a low rating! Has definitely been added to the list of favorite places.
Only downside is the session times can feel a little short and the staff do get a little pushy if you're over!
Aphantasia
Well, the food I liked tasted good to me, and the food i don't like, didn't do so well, so I am giving them four stars.

PS: The minimum cost for two people is $66 dollars, not $50 claimed on zomato page.

I have to admit, when I see an All You Can Eat menu I usually assume that quality is immediately compromised and generally stay away from that venue. However, the owner of Okami Japanese seemed so proud of his four restaurants and the reviews were good, so I was willing to put aside my hesitation and head across town for an ALL YOU CAN EAT Japanese food experience.

been this restaurant for many times . fresh food, especially the beef carparccio and teriyaki steak. , quick service and good value for money. back soon for sure.
Nelly
The sushi was nice and the eggplant with miso really nice. But the Teriyaki chicken was not as good. The meat was dry and the sauce didn't have the flavour I look for when eating this dish.

David Lew
Your perception of this place will greatly depend on what dish you choose.

On one hand, there's the eggplant salad which is flavoured and sticky in all the right ways.

On the other hand, we had a chicken tepenyaki dish with steamed rice as well, but the rice was a bit gluggy, the sauce was thin and not as sticky or flavoursome as I'd expect, the chicken was a bit dry and the plate didn't come out sizzling (which I prefer but to be fair is definitely not a must-have in other people's books).

Service not bad but a little wanting.

Overall I would have to give it a 3, but if they make all the dishes like the eggplant salad, it has the potential of a 4.
Jennie Diep
For $32.80 pp all you can eat Japanese food, it's pretty good. I would suggest going in a big group so you can share and try a lot of different dishes as each dish has a certain serving size that you cannot customise. Extra charge for wastage does exist here so I would suggest ordering a few dishes first and then if you're still hungry order more. There is a nice range of vegetarian dishes; vegetarian gyoza, tofu, seaweed salad, soba noodles, vegetarian spring rolls, vegetable tempura and vegetarian sushi are a fair few that I tried.
A couple of things I was disappointed about - the tempura batter of the tempura. It became soft and soggy after cooling down. I was hoping for a nice crunch.
Also, the soba noodle salad was below average.
Overall it was a pleasant experience.
Friendly and fast service.
Definitely got my money's worth!
Expect yourself to be rolling out of the restaurant because I definitely was!

Average Japanese, but the problem with an all you can eat menu is that you invariably sacrifice quality for quantity. Everything is ok but nothing is amazing. Service is pleasant and accommodating.

We waiting 30 minutes from 19:23, but nothing coming. We ask first waitress, she said still waiting. We looked for the order man to ask. The waiter said he need to check. When he was coming back he said order machine lost order list. We need to re-order. During we waiting, no one to ask us. I think this service need to training again and again and the order system need to upgrade. The food should be fine. I think okami in Hampton everything's better than here.
We have been here twice. On a value for money basis with the all you can eat, it is hard to beat!

You may not like everything, but I do believe it has all been prepared well and presented at its best. If you ate many of the sushi and sashimi alone, you would get value for money based on what many other places charge. The beef carpaccio was really excellent. I had 3 serves! Many of the other dishes were excellent too.

I virtually "waddled" out as I ate so much lovely food.

Yes, it wasn't absolutely top shelf, but then, that is not what it is meant to be. It is very good quality all the same.

The service was friendly and our table was ready when we arrived.

We will be back again for sure.
Blash
We came here last night with friends and had the "all you can eat" buffet.
The food was acceptable without being spectacular. All the courses we had were tasty, nicely cooked and served well. The courses were all quite small but that did not matter as we just ordered more. The food is a bit "dumbed down" to fit the demographics and looked nothing like the photos on the menu. The service was, at times good, and at other times, non existing. When I paid the bill they tried to overcharge me as they offer a Senior price but tried to charge the full price.
It is worth a trip to eat here if you want standard westernised food at a good price but don't expect wonders.
Mary Ha
This place is great value for money and has a good variety of dishes. The sashimi and sushi is nice, chicken karaage is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, teriyaki and miso paste steak melts in your mouth and the beef salad is beautiful. The staff are very friendly and don't think it's strange if you order alot. They always say you're welcome when we thank them for taking our plates. Green tea ice cream is bitter but you have to try the black sesame ice cream, it is delicious but it's limited to one serve per person. We have been here 3 times and always leave satisfied and happy.
Kimmy_desu
I'm fairly satisfied with this restaurant. You're only paying $33 after all so why are people expecting premium 5-star quality? Most of the food were pretty satisfactory. The cooked prawns are nice and quite fresh. If you like prawns, order at least one plate per person and you will be getting your money's worth. There were just a few dishes that were below average. The gyozas weren't fully cooked (maybe it was just our batch) and the chawan mushi came in an extremely tiny bowl that could be finished in two spoonfuls. But on the whole, we still enjoyed the dinner and had plenty to eat, and we'll still go back for more prawns, haha.

We had dinner there on Friday night. Ordered the "all you can eat" menu which was well priced and offered good selection of authentic Japanese dishes.

The services was prompt and the waitressing staff courteous and polite. We could not fault the food. Everything we tried (~10 different dishes) was well presented and tasted great.

The only down side was the tables positioned too close to each other which detracted from the experience. The toilets need a bit of a spruce up.

Definitely recommend to try and will go back there again. Not sure why the overall rating is low.
Crystal Zeng
nice sitting, but food looks quite different to showed on menu, did not taste fresh (esp hot food taste below average) serving size varies per number of heads, the waitress was very impatient when taking orders, will not go back
Elena Barger
We went for the 32.90 all you can eat buffet on Sunday - the food was good, the service fast and friendly. The great number of dishes to choose from. Great place for casual dinning with friends or family - definitely going to be back soon.
John Wang
We went for the 32.90 all you can eat buffet on Sunday, the service is okay, but the quality of the food isn't very high, the sushi weren't below average, definitely overnight frozen ones. The hot foods were okay, about average. I meant you get what you pay for, for 33 bucks per head you can't expect too much.
Yuiisama
Not sure why this place doesn't have a decent score but my experience was very good with the exception that we were a table of 11 people and they don't do orders according to the number of dishes ordered but rather the number of people present. So when we ordered two tofu, four dishes would come out and we couldn't finish it. So it was a big waste. Wish they would send out food according to plates and then we could order more if needed. But otherwise, good food - decent sushi, better chicken katsu. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff.

I had the $30 all you can eat and it was amazing! Been back 5 times since!!! Sushi and sashimi were fresh, food arrived quickly and heaps of options for the all you can eat!
IamHungry
The food is as good as it gets for an all you can eat $30pp. If you think you should be getting top quality sashimi like Nobu then you are at the wrong place and shouldn't complain about paying the $30. Friendly staff and food arrives quickly.
Food Lover
Great new place

Been heaps of times since opened. Always good, fresh food. Good service but you need to book.

They have two sittings.
Eeyore
Purchased a voucher for buffet and a bottle of wine. A few dollars cheaper and a free drink. This is a Chinese place serving Japanese restaurant. The service was good. The food was average not gross but nothing to talk about since it was made by Chinese! The tempura was like fried prawns with batter. The sushi and sashimi was better than sushi sushi. Other food taste like they are from packets and heating up. I guess you get what you pay for.
Zasher
Great food, really like the sushi and teriyaki steak, the green tea icecream is good as well!
You do need to know that the first dinner session ends at 7:30pm and you need to book beforehand!
