Review Kantipur - Caulfield

Emily May
Three of us came to Kantipur Indian and Nepalese Restaurant for dinner on a Wednesday evening. We ordered the mango lassi, chicken momos, butter chicken curry, Rogan Josh lamb curry, chilli cheese naan, garlic naan and saffron rice. The food was absolutely delicious. Dherai dhanyabad cha.

Total disappointment. My jhol momo's jhol tasted like curry and momo was not the best itself. Even thought i was hungry this totoally disappointed me in many ways . Now i know where not to go.

We picked our order of chicken and veg momos. The stuffing was way less and I could only taste the outer layer/flour . I was already disappointed but then I got a piece/wire of dishwashing scrubber in one of the veg momos. Worst experience ever.

This Nepalese restaurant makes some great tasting dishes and the service is very attentive. Really enjoyed their Momos as well as their speciality Goat curry, definitely worth a visit.

Ordered chicken momo , it said 8 pieces but only contained 7. The chutney container was very tiny, the pieces were small with very little stuffing. The momos tastes good however. Just not worth spending $18

The food is delicious and tasty and very fresh. The service is great and the waiter was helpful and explained each dish to us. I would highly recommend this place.

Ordered chicken momos and veg momos last night. I was already dissatisfied with the tiny chutney serving size. The momos do come with chutney, but according to them they are doing a favour by giving us the momos already that we purchased🤣 In case you want chutney then pay them 3$ extra for a big tub of chutney(according to them). The chutney had way too much of colour and the momos had way too less of the filling. The veg momos are not even worth giving a try. The food was totally not worth the money at all. I would never recommend this place to anyone. I have been to many Nepalese restaurants, but never had such a bad encounter. All the other Nepalese restaurants are way too good.

Appalling service. I ordered on-line, no sign of any food 30 mins after it was due, I rang to ask where it was only to be told that the on-line orders weren't working (mind you, there was no sign or mention of that on their website). I went to pick up the food and got there to find they had clearly only just started preparing the meal. I had an appointment and couldn't wait, so I left - asking them to please cancel the order and refund me. There was never any apology, and they charged me for a meal which I never received. We will be ordering from Junoon from now on.

Perhaps it's the take away food but apart from the great dumplings this might be the worst sub continent food i have ever had and certainly not the aromatic spices of true nepalese. 3 dishes same thick indian style indistinguishable sauce but no meat!! A rip off!!!!!!

Incredibly delicious authentic food. Excellent service. Favourite place to eat dinner.

Extremely small in quantity. Was very shocked from the experience as the person serving us confirmed each dish was for 2 to 3 people.

Had some palak paneer and garlic naan from here recently. It left a little to be desired as the garlic naan was flavourless somehow, and the amount of paneer they included in the curry was small. I wouldn’t recommend this place for what they’re charging.

The lamb seekh kabab is delicious, worth trying. Mango chicken will be on a sweet side with mango pulp. The service is appreciably fast. One can also try the buffet, it includes good variations.
Surprisingly, the Uber eats menu has a lesser price for food items than the dine in menu. And on take aways you get 10% off.

This used to be a regular local Indian takeaway joint for me - I found the almond chicken always exceptionally tasty, despite always ordering mild as that is my preference.

However, on my last order after not eating here for a few months, the almond chicken was one of the most bland curries I’ve ever eaten. And the rice was gluggy and clumped together - something I’ve never received from an Indian restaurant before.

They seem to have gone downhill lately and I’ve lost confidence in ordering with them again. There’s a few other Indian places around the area, I’ll probably give them a try before going to Kantipur again. It’s a shame.
Rebecca Fay
Seriously don't rate this place at all. The rice was all stuck together in a big clump. I always find it quite stingy when a curry has fillers in it like potato which the Beef Vindaloo did - which was not mentioned on the menu. Not a sufficient amount of actual meat in the dish. Left very disappointed and hungry.

Can’t knock this joint. Had delivery ordered via menu log. Food arrived on time, was hot and all items arrived. Samosa and butter chicken were great. The rice was great, and garlic naan was smack on!

A great staple!

It was great Nepalese/Indian. Our waiter was lovely and the food was great. It was a traditional place that was all about taste. It wasn’t one of the spicier places however they managed to do well with those traditional dishes that are usually hot. Overall a great place to get Nepalese.

Kantipur is a tiny restaurant, tucked away along the row of other shops. To be very honest, you might miss it’s existence while driving along. Maybe they need to get a more attractive sign (just my opinion).

Step in and you will be welcomed by Nepali songs playing away in the background and the tiny joint actually makes you feel cozy and relaxed.

Let’s talk about the food first and then we will dissect the other criteria. Me and the wife have been there couple of times and have sampled quite a few dishes from their menu, namely
1. Chilli Momo - An abomination in my opinion which had the dumplings floating in an unwanted ketchup gravy.
2. Momo Meat - Those soft, meat filled dumplings were divinely delicious.
3. Chilli Beef - Expected it to be a dry, stir fry kind of thingy, but boy was I wrong. The meat was slathered again in that good for nothing ketchup gravy making it sweet instead of the advertised chilli flavour.
4. Tenzing De Hilary - Was a well balanced curry which both me and the wife devoured.
5. Goat Bhuna - A spicy, wholesome and bold bodied curry which I am sure will make everyone break a sweat.
6. Nepali Dal Tadka - Another hit dish, served in a cute little copper bucket.
7. Lemon Rice - Nicely tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves, the lemon rice was a welcome carb.
8. Keema Naan - The naan was stuffed with scrumptious keema, enjoyed it so much that we ordered it on both the occasions.
9. Chicken Kulcha - Not as delicious as the keema naan albeit it was decently tasty.

Although, except for the couple of duds, the food in general was very enjoyable. But the portion sizes (apart from the naans) were notoriously stingy and the gravy to meat ratio was more inclined towards the gravy.

Overall the service is on the slower side, so set out for a dine in with ample time in hand. Once, the waiter had forgotten to provide us the menus and then came over after 5 minutes or so to take the order. Within those 5 minutes I frantically tried to attract his attention, but to no avail.

The complimentary papads and the chutneys were a nice touch.

Also, in my two bit opinion, the tables are a bit small. But again, that might be a case of me having a larger than normal body frame. :)

My ratings;
Food - 3.5/5
Ambience - 3.5/5
Service - 2/5

Very tasty and good quality Indian food with great service. Beware the sizes of the main dishes are very small so you may need 3 mains between 2 people.

Ordered Chicken Korma, Tenzing - De - Hilary with Chicken and Two Naan's. The Korma had a Weird Smell and it seemed they had used too much Turmeric. The Tenzing - De - Hilary dish was pretty good with tender pieces of Chicken and Mushroom. Naan's although Soft were very thick in Size. The Speed of delivery even on a Saturday was pretty good. Would have rated higher if the Prices were a bit less and the quality of the food a bit better.

The service was very good. The complimentary papadams were great and so was the complimentary sauces. The Goat curry was just above average too much sauce not enough meat. The vegetarian curry was very tasty. The tandoori chicken masala was very good. If you would ask me would I go back again...Maybe!!! The reason why I never gave them a 3.5 is I believe the amount that they charge for a main, they could be more generous with the servings of protein..

My husband and I came here for dinner for our anniversary recently. This is where we had dinner for our very first date 8 years ago. A lot happens and changes in 8 years.... but the curry is as tasty as I can remember :) we had the country captain and the chicken Madras and they were both full of flavours. I love that they were generous with the meat and sauce. Service was fantastic too.

Very pleased with the vibe, quality of food, and the customer service we received today.
The two people serving us absolutely marvellous with their smile and genuine customer service skills.
The value for money was maximised and the ambience had added a great character to our dining experience along with well presented food and flavour.
The menu also had lot of things that other restaurants do not offer these days.
Will definitely return for more.

I recently ordered an assortment of food for takeaway from this Indian eatery based purely off its elevated scoring on this helpful website. First, on the drive home, I discovered that the restauranteur had thrown in a few pappadums for free, which I quickly demolished in the car. Once home, I frantically put away two samosas and then two onion bhaji. At this stage, having devoured my entrees, I noticed I had developed a small amount of upper lip sweat, which I initially thought was on account of the subcontinental spices. I later realised that I had moistened, somewhat, purely as a consequence of the physical exertion involved in eating so quickly.

At this important culinary intermission, I briefly reflected on the journey the chef (or "saipha" in Punjabi) had taken me on. "So far, so good", I thought, finding comfort in the fact that although the food was tasty, it did not metaphorically take me to India - for example, to the Ganges river, which I know to be a fetid toilet which many Indians use as a bath. No, at this stage, I was in my living room, sweating, anticipating the joyous flavours of the two main meals I had ordered.

Summoning the strength to lift my obese frame, I stood, shuffled across to the kitchen bench, and poured the contents of the chicken tikka masala into a bowl, which I quickly ate. It was thoroughly, thoroughly delicious, especially because it was delivered by abundant naan bread, which I had ordered for this specific purpose.

But this is where things took a turn for the worse.

I opened my malai kofta, poured the contents into another bowl, and, in so doing, I found the thickest, most offensive, long black hair in my meal. I closed my eyes and suddenly, for a split second, I was in a laneway where a throng of toiletless Indians were defecating in the open air. It was hell on earth.

So I opened my eyes, curled the black hair into a coil on the edge of the bowl, and summarily inhaled another delicious main meal.

Clearly, the food at this restaurant is of high quality - the flavours make this clear - but one cannot help but wonder whether the chef(s) are sufficiently exacting when it comes to hygiene.

Delicious food and friendly service, this is my go to place for a curry in SE Melbourne. They also raised money for Nepal after the Earthquake from donations. Great place.

The food here is so tasty
We keep going back for the chilli momos which are dumplings. The curries are full of flavour and the staff are lovely

We dined at Kantipur for the second time and were again very impressed by the serving sizes and the delicious flavours of every dish that we had. Will definitely return again.

Food has changed but still recommended. First visit since this has changed hands. The food has changed as a result to a more UK style of Indian with more cream etc. I did notice a lot more use of food dye as well. The poppadoms were not fresh but other than that very nice. I will still use this for the local curry, not particularly cheap though....

Fantastic Indian/Nepalese, the flavour in the food is always great. Service is excellent- always friendly and helpful. Love that they're actually open the times they say they're open- including late on a weeknight! Defs my favourite local curry. Delicious.

Has changed hands; food is now terrible!. This restaurant was, for many years, a favourite. That all changed when we ordered take-away from there this evening. The food, which had never ever been anything but beautiful quality, was bordering on inedible. Both the palak paneer and chicken tikka were loaded with food dyes, a sure sign of cheap, poor quality Indian food. The chicken tikka was also dry to the point of being very very difficult to chew and eat. When I rang to complain, I enquired if it had changed hands and discovered that it had. I never used to mind paying over $50 for takeaway for two people; the quality was always worth it - but it's pretty annoying to spend that kind of money for the substandard food we ended up with tonight.

Every time amazing. Been going here for years...every time the money is worth it. best curry in town hands down

Dinner tonight in a group of 4. Lamb korma, butter chicken and captain ?? ( can't recall) all amazing. Serves look small but are very filling. $100 all up including a few beers, soft drinks and delicious naan and roti. Surprised not more diners on a Friday night. We'll be back.

Good cauliflower curry. Had lots of TA from here, Never dined in but will give it a try.

Food ok but service bad. Whilst ordering waitress laughed at us for some weird unknown reason which was alittle off putting & to top it all off 3 tables walked in alot later than us & they were all given meals before us which resulted in us having to remind them that we were actually still present in their restaurant! When we asked where our main meals were & why we were forgotten about, the waitress lied & told us it was because we ordered an entree & the other tables had not...the table directly next to us had samosas! Not going back- its a shame the himalayan sherpa closed down in richmond- we miss it dearly..especially when you try places like Kantipur.

We want here for the first time, and from the start the waitress attentive and charming.
She was the only one there and our glasses were never empty.
The resturant was intimate and the food extremely tasty.

Tasty momo made our birthday celebration wonderful. My sister's birthday party at Kantipur was just wonderful. We wanted to taste nepali food since long but did know how to cook so we were in search for some good nepali food places where we can taste original food from nepal. Then shaun, my one of colleague suggested me this kantipur restaurant. Thanks shaun and kantipur :)
Your momo and lamb sikh are just amazing

Tasty nepali momo is just wonderful.. We celebrated our cousin's 21st birthday here and we enjoyed nepali momo with some indian dishes very much. Its indian indian veg samosa were also very fine in taste.

Just sack that waitress!. The food was very standard and reasonable but the waitress was appalling. I know that to be a waitress you really don't need a degree but a secondary education would be welcome.
Sandy
Terrible! Just threw out most of the take away food we ordered from kantipur. Dry, chewy, hard as rock lamb, disgusting raita, just passable curry and tasteless Momo. Don't waste your money on this uninspiring place.

Tried for the first time last night as a result of a recommendation and it certainly lived up to it, good food and generous portions, I am looking forward to the left overs tonight.

To start off with, what a beautiful little place! I was a wee bit worried about how this place wouls turn out to be. Turns out I need not worry. I tasted all but two curries and everyone one of them were tasty and very, very delicious! Everyone rated it an 8 out of ten and I believe this is pretty accurate rating. Vey very friendly staff and great service.

Simply the best. Great Staff, Great Food, cosy atmosphere - Kantipur is also great value for money - The Nepalese and Indian Cuisine on offer is consistently good no matter what night you choose to go, as is the quality and presentation. There menu has plenty to offer, including a great range of vegetarian options.

The staff are fantastic - and know the meaning of customer service.

Kantipur deserves the support from foodies everywhere.

I love this place. Often get take away. Staff there are fantastic. So friendly. Food is loverly and warms you up on a cold Melbourne evening. Garlic nann and malai kofta are my favoirite.

The taste of Nepal North of Caulfield. Kantipur offers Nepalese cuisine, with some familiar Indian tastes. The stand out dishes were their meat MoMos and Goat Curry. MoMos are dainty sized dumplings, which can be either filled with meat or vegetables, and then wrapped in a doughy pastry and then steamed. On this occasion we chose the meat filling of chicken mince which was accompanied with Nepalese chutney, complimenting the subtlety of the filling, with the chutney's chilli kick. The Goat Curry was a delicious mild curry, the sauce was rich with curry spices, and thick, perfect to dip naan bread or have it soaked up by rice. The goat flesh was tender, and its taste could be compared to a gamey lamb. To end the night, mango kulfi, similar to mango ice cream, but is a dessert that is denser and creamier, and was a sublime finisher to this cuisine expedition of Nepal.
