Definately my fav Chinese restaurant in the Caulfield area. My go to dish would definately be the scrambled egg with duck on rice ($12)
1. Minced Beef w Egg on Rice ($9.5)
2. Curry w Beef Brisket on Rice ($10)
Iam in love with their chilli, it’s loaded with peanuts & not that spicy, more on the sweet side. Literally can destroy that whole container.
My favourite restaurant in Caulfield and popular among university students. Every time I come here I order not 1, but at least 2 omelette duck rice, because it’s so good! Even better with the chili they provide!
I haven’t really tried their other dishes, so I can’t vouch for them, but the duck rice is so good. The beef omelette rice they have definitely isn’t as flavorful as the duck one.
An oldie but always a goodie! Been coming to this eatery since uni days and i absolutely love them! Their salt and pepper chicken ribs with rice is amazing and i love it.
3.5
Gee whiz, this place has been around for as long as I can recall back to my uni days dating well over a decade ago!
Up until recently, I haven’t been back since graduating and moving away from Caulfield. Well, nothing really much has changed inside out albeit a little worn and tattered now, and it was nice seeing the same two sisters still running it.
We arrived just before the lunch rush and no sooner after we placed our orders, people started continuously pouring in. I suppose it goes to show how popular it remains even after all these years.
With quite an extensive menu, making a decision was sure no easy feat. As we scrolled through the 70 odd options of noodles and rice dishes (no exaggeration here), I took a gamble with the Beef With Black Pepper Stir Fried Spaghetti while my partner ended up zeroing in on the Duck With Scrambled Egg On Rice.
All we wanted that day was something simple yet satisfying without being too heavy and that was exactly how both our mains turned out.
As enjoyable as the above two meals were, our Mixed Appetisers was rather forgettable - a tired and dull ”plethora” of deep fried seafood that didn’t taste too fresh.
Anticipating the same out of the Oyster Omelette that came after, it wasn’t the case much to our relief! Light and fluffy with a reasonable amount of oysters incorporated, it was one decent omelette.
I truly take my hat off to the elderly crew who ran a smooth operation despite a full house, bearing in mind they also have a mezzanine dining area which they physically carry food up to!
Look, ain’t no fancy venue or food to be found here, but it has survived the test of time, proving to be a reliable place for some good feed with prices that won’t break anyone’s budget.
Food is definitely worth the price, as for the staffs, they’re old people so it can be a little bit overwhelming for them sometimes, however will definitely try their best to serve. Overall one of the better tasting food near uni
pretty good n cheap duck and scrambled egg on rice!! although the staff and ambience have a lot room for improvements, and they also need to work on their marketing strategies
Probably my favourite restaurant in all of Melbourne, which is saying something. have been coming here for years now, the staff are awesome, make us feel like we're part of a family. The restaurant is quaint, cute and cosy, especially on a rainy and dreary Melbourne day. The food is the real star though, in particular the deep fried spicy meat (choice of pork, calamari or chicken) on rice, its seriously delicious, and is comparable to a similar dish I've tried at Spice Temple in crown, though several times cheaper. I'll never let more than a few months go by before eating here, and suggest it to everyone.
This is my go to place for many many years. Good pork chops and beef brisket. Best value for money. Another highlight is their homemade chili sauce.
Basically a student friendly restaurant (if you were student and feeling broke af you will get what i meant) Been here like 8472626382726 times since its near my uni. this place never change anything for years but i would still be glad to go back.service was average nothing good nothing bad.
Panda 🐼🐼🐼:
They serve you quickly so you dont have to wait for the food that long
Food is in decent quality
Most of the dishes is really good ( i recommend the duck with scrambled egg, house fried rice, and also the deep fried spicy pork ribs on rice)
Price is very reasonable
Portion is big
Very surprising that at this level the food never dissapoint and always in a good quality.
Pandon’t ❌❌❌
quite unfriendly staff
Some of the tables are oily
Best for Duck and Scrambled Egg Rice, A1,A2,A3,A5 And so so many more. I go there every week after a Netball game and the staff are the cutest family that are always friendly and welcoming! 💕
Have been to this place numerous times. I personally just love their chicken fried rice, and adding a little soy sauce and the other sauce(do not know the name) available on the table, it give the rice a very zingy taste. Just love it. Never tried anything else but I will try new dishes on the menu. Really good place, very friendly staff, good food makes up a good experience.
Best chinese food ive ever had in my life! Especially the menu A2 and A10, the fried chicken and the duck on rice. Magnifocent taste, great value for the price. Great portion.
Just one small minor thing, the staff need to take order more properly. In my case they got my order wrong. But they were willing to replace with the right one.
Overall, a great one!
Awesome food! Tasty and fills you up good with very reasonable prices. Love the deep-fried spicy chicken which pairs well with their chilli oil (Best ever!!)
So far, it is the best chinese restaurant in melbourne. I love the duck with scrambled egg with rice or fried noodle, and also the pork ribs with sechuan sauce.
Always come here during my uni time
And haven't been here more then 6 years - come back again in 2017
Order the same food back in uni, spicy pork ribs on rice.
Still the same auntie serve me the food
Taste still good as old time
2thumbs up
Came here for a late dinner as there were very few choices at this time of night. Conveniently located next to the Cauldfield Racecourse, at the corner of Derby street, this place has a simple but unique setup. The decor almost reminds me of being inside a cruise ship especially when going onto the second level.
The menu had a large variety to choose from. The group I was with ordered the lamb chop, wah tan hor, duck with scrambled eggs on rice, Chinese sausage fried rice and the hokkein fried rice. The lamb chop was done very well. In fact one of the best ones so far in Melbourne. The fried rice was decent too as it's been awhile since I had 'lup cheong' aka Chinese sausage. The duck with scrambled egg on rice was quite average however.
Another attractive part of this place is the price. The Chinese sausage dish was listed as $10 which is very reasonable.
If given the chance, i would certainly come back and try the other items on the menu. Definitely worth giving it a go if you are in the neighbourhood.
Cheap and cheerful. The kitchen is clean and cleaner than most Chinese restaurants I frequent. Chinese students and quite a few Aussie students seem to love this place. Criticisms of this place are unfair because it serves a need. Student food. I bring my family here when we want something authentic and devoid of the fan fare that goes with fine dining. If I can please my kids ,believe me a food critic's tastes will be a cake walk. Try the hot butter chillie sprinkled cuttlefish and the Kankun. All the pork dishes are very good too. They dont pretend to be anything but themselves. Nice!
This is one of that uni food that you always go to during lunches (quite a satisfying portion, tastes good and cheap). To be honest, there are only two menus in this restaurant that are delicious. They are "duck with scrambled egg on rice" and "deep fried spicy chicken on rice". Many said their pork chops are nice as well, but i haven't really tried them myself. Don't come here if their busy, cos they're just gonna ask you to sit on the third floor and food would not ever come to you. Overall, nice and tasty cheap food.
Cheap Cantonese food. I like it as the portions are huge and prices are cheap. The interior is honestly very shabby, but no one here comes for the ambiance! Tasty, quick, and simple. I love the beef with scrambled egg on rice, it's my go to meal after classes. It's mostly Monash Uni students eating here.
Cheap Cantonese eat. Fast service, old decor, good Cantonese food in Melbourne (I am a Cantonese so u can trust me!) If u like flavorful bachelor type of food, try the spicy deep fried pork chop or chicken on rice. I always order this dish when I feel like greasy food.
Love it! Can't say much about the other food in the menu, but me n my wife have been coming back here regularly for the last 10 years or so, and we always had the same meal...spicy pork chop on rice and the spicy chicken chop on rice...have it with their awesome home made chilli oil...superb!
Great value Chinese. Super cheap banquet for two. Recommended alternative to the usual fast food!
Um... yum! Don't let the decor fool you. Cheap, easy no fuss traditional Cantonese meal. Although the staff doesn't know much English, she was always smiling & super friendly. Spicy pork chop is awesome.
7 years at this place. Been visiting this place for the same dish for so long..... Spicy fried chicken and veg fried rice with a can of coke!!!
Cheap, tasty(read Salty) and amazingly quick service..... University days re-lived everytime i visit this place.
Cheap and cheerful Cantonese meal. Quick service and great tasting dishes.
Best Duck Ever!. This place serves the best scrambled egg with duck on rice in Melbourne! The duck meat is tender and fragrant and the scrambled egg complements the duck meat so that it's not too dry. Fast and speedy service too.
Cheap Chinese dishes. Quick and simple and taste great
Best cantonese food in Melbourne!!. Hidden gem, small, but awesome. They manage to serve great food with great quality over years without change of taste.
I always go to eat here either A1,2,3,4 or S (food menu code) + with scrambled egg. They tastes awesome. Everyone like it. After study, badminton, always eat here. Never gone wrong.
5/5 !! Amazing
So happy to have found this authentic Cantonese style restaurant!
Check out my picture below to see which dishes we ordered (labelled).
Definitely loved the pork chop in Peking sauce (702) and also the deep fried spicy pork chop (701) but all flavours were really authentic and not too salty!
Will definitely be back to try out their other dishes!!
Been eating here for over 20 years and I'm amazed how consistently good the food has been over the years. Food here has always been priced reasonably given its proximity to Monash university. The deep fried spicy pork chops on rice (A1 on the menu) is a favourite of many that dine here. It's a no frills kind of place and I love it.
I used to come here when I was studying at Monash University. The food hasn’t changed in the past 10 years. Best Cantonese restaurant in Melbourne. The food tasted exactly like what you’d get in Guangzhou & HK.
This is one of those hole in the wall type places that’s an absolutely gem.
It’s a small family run joint with heaps of tasty dishes.
Every single time I’m here I feel a wealth of regret that I’ve moved away from Malvern. They’ve recently renovated and now is even more welcoming (not that they had to be). If they had publicly traded shares, I’d invest.
Had the Deep Fried Spicy Pork on Rice and the Duck with scrambled eggs on rice and they were both perfect. Even their rice is just perfectly done. The Duck with scrambled eggs on rice is a whole new level and you won’t find this dish anywhere else. A MUST try.
We had the most enjoyable dinner today. The food was awesome, the banquet option for $64 for 2 people could easily feed 3 or 4 if not too hungry, and lastly, but not the least importantly: the ladies who served us were so very nice with a really warm and welcoming attitude. Will definitely revisit. P. S. I rarely take pictures of food, but when they brought us the 5 dishes which make up the banquet, they looked impressive!
Since I come here at 2004 until now the food was never let me down, LEGENDARILY!
