My family and I have recently discovered this restaurant and found the Chinese food the best in the area by a long way .We have had takeaway and eaten in the restaurant 4 times in the last 7 weeks ! The food including plum duck ,lemon chicken, beef and chicken hotplates are highly recommended .The homemade dim sims and dumplings are sensational as well as the spring rolls .Half of the family are vegetarian and The Orient more than caters for them .The pleasant surroundings and decor add to the ambience .We would recommend this restaurant to anyone who knows anything about great food !
Great tasty chinese food!! Small shop front, not a great deal of space inside but who cares because the few times I've been here they have delivered delicious food!!
Best special fried rice on the planet. No exaggeration.

This is the most amazing Chinese food I have ever eating and I have eating at a lot of Chinese restaurants! If you ask for the special of the night they will bring you an amazing dish that's not on the menu! There is a beautiful olive and prawn dish (not on the menu) that is Devine! The food is always fresh and full of flavor!
Orientation week. Have been visiting this place for a few years already, so thought it was only appropriate to write it up. The Orient is a 'suburban style' Chinese restaurant located in South Caulfield that does a pretty good job serving up the standards. Comprising seating for 40 to 50 diners, it's a casual place with faux timber tables, white walls and sparse décor. It's BYO policy and very reasonable pricing makes it an attractive option for a quick casual meal that won't break the bank. You can eat very well for around $20 to $25 per head.
The food has a certain rustic appeal, serving sizes are generous and the food is tasty, however don't expect to find refined, sophisticated or modern Chinese cuisine. Service can be a little trying at times, but thankfully it was on the ball when I visited last weekend. I do find the amount of seasoning and volume of sauce in some dishes can vary between visits, although when they get it right they manage to dish up some great dishes.
Some of my favourites include their short soup, curry beef triangles and fried wontons served with sweet & sour sauce. They prepare an amazing sizzling beef with fresh mushrooms which whilst not listed on the menu, is a real standout. Make sure to ask for a serve of the homemade chilli sauce to accompany your meals, as it's exceptionally good thanks to the addition of Sichuan pepper corns.
