Visited Yu Kitchen for their Lobster Banquet and I really enjoyed it!
It was rather busy on a Sunday night and we were really excited to have Lobster Noodles. We started off with soup and it was cooked really well and the flavours were good. I like how they used melon to give it the extra flavour.
We then had Lobster Noodles, the portion was good and the noodles were cooked well. The noodles were seasoned very well.
The fried rice and the stir fried chicken and truffle went really well together. The chicken was seasoned well and the truffle flavours were strong.
We finished off with the mango and pomelo sago which was light and refreshing. Overall, we really enjoyed the meal and would definitely be back for this lobster banquet again
We love everything on the lobster menu except the mixed vege and desert.
Not cheap but quality is good. Worth it if you can afford
When Yum Cha is life 😍! This place was lovely for yum cha, the venue was quite beautiful and the staff friendly. It’s a yum cha place where you order from the menu first rather than off the trolleys, more and more seem to be going that way now! L
Like many places, the serves are in 3’s which makes it difficult in a 4. They also wouldn’t add an extra 1 to the dishes like some places do for a slight extra cost, so you had to order 2 serves and get 6 for 4 people which means you get less variety. The food was tasty though, I loved the egg noodles, probably my favourite actually!
Pictured is the:

2. Shanghai Xiao Long Bao
3. Prawn Dumpling (Har Gow)
4. Pan Fried Pork Dumpling
5. Wok-fried Egg Noodles with Light Soy and Barbecue Pork
6. Chicken Glutinous Rice
7. Chicken Spring Rolls
8. Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce
9. Custard Egg Tart
3.5 stars ⭐️ like the environment and service, the food was between nice and okay. Variety is not great.
The cheong fun is not as good as tim Ho Wan. The vego version had sweet tofu in it which makes it taste weird.
The turnip cake (pan fried) use real turnip but some turnip sticks are super hard and chewy.
The nice list:
- the glutinous rice w chicken
- XLB
- Char Siu bao
- xo turnip pudding (not sure why it’s somehow better than the non-xo version)
- stir fry garlic gai lan
Although Yu Kitchen serves yum cha most dishes are different from the traditional recipes, incorporating modern flavours. The beef puff fuses wagyu beef with aromatic black truffle, creating a mild and well balanced flavour, none overpowering the other. The pastry was beautiful and evenly golden providing fine flakes with each bite
Excellent yum cha and service
Immersed in a beautifully designed, classy and intimate space in the luxury precinct of Chadstone Shopping Centre, Yu Kitchen is fast becoming one of Melbourne’s leading destinations for fine Chinese cuisine.
Leading the culinary operation is 2 Star Michelin Chef Chen Kentaro, son of world famous Iron Chef Chen Kenichi, with new Yu Kitchen Chef Karloong Yee stepping up from Sous Chef to lead the daily operations.
With over 21 years of culinary experience, Karloong started his illustrious career and trained at the Mandarin Oriental, Hilton and Westin Hotels. He then gained further culinary experience at the Mahogany Room as Assistant Chef De Cuisine at Silks Restaurant at Crown Casino before moving to China to gain further international experience.
Now at the helm of Yu Kitchen, Chef Karloong has broadened the menu, delivering his interpretation of homemade Chinese comfort food, to be enjoyed by all.
We loved tasting our way through the new Yum Cha menu, which is made fresh in-house daily.
As expected, we were thoroughly impressed by our yumcha experience at the restaurant. The menu features an abundance of choices including a truly exquisite dim sum options and other lunch items available a la carte. There truly is something to suit everyone (even the fussiest of eaters).
Our personal favourite is the steamed spinach and wild mushroom dumplings. Think wonderfully thin yet slightly gooey dumpling pastry encasing perfectly cooked varieties of mushrooms coated in fine spinach.
Another must have is the steamed barbecue pork rice roll – a wonderful version of the traditional cheong fun, this dish is delicate and heroes the richness of the barbecued pork.
For something more decadent, the baked black truffle and wagyu beef puff will leave you wanting more. The addition of black truffle certainly added to the decadence of this dish and worked wonderfully with the melt in your mouth texture of the wagyu.
In terms of the yum cha essentials like har gow and glutinous rice, Yu Kitchen excels as well. Expect these to be some of the finest renditions you will ever try. Picture perfect, everything we tasted was truly exquisite.
As you slowly work your way to dessert time, make sure you try the ever popular steamed Heavenly Swans Filled with White Lotus Paste. These works of art are as pretty as they are moreish. Crispy and flaky pastry combined with the most decadent lotus paste that will leave your taste buds tingling.
Steeped in tradition but crafted with a keen eye for detail and a passion for pushing culinary boundaries, the new yum cha menu at Yu Kitchen is sensational. A joint venture between The Oriental and Ruyi Group in Malaysia and renowned Calia Collective of Australia, Yu Kitchen encourages guests to discover and explore new and quirky dishes with its take on classic flavours with a touch of modernity, taking guests on a divine journey through the old world and new world of Chinese cuisine – a delicious journey not to be missed.
Would definitely come back!
Food: quality 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 yesss yesss yesss.. you’ll think the food that they serve are small but surprisingly it fills you up!! I left so full and my partner and I didn’t even finish the dish.. (we eat a lot too)
Price: pricey by worth it!
Employees: professionals
Atmosphere: so luxurious
Definitely coming back here for my birthday next month 🤣💕💕💕💕
We visited Yu Kitchen for the first time over the weekend. Staff service was efficient. Most of the food that we had were above average - would definitely recommend the barbecue pork and their swan pastry, although this is more for picture purposes! The range of food is a little bit small for yum cha compared to other places, and the prices are a little bit higher, but the setting did make it feel a tad bit fancier than your usual weekend yum cha restaurant. Our table for six was a little small though and it was a tight squeeze to fit all the food in! The venue is visually stunning so would be good for special events. Would recommend booking ahead as it gets busy quickly on weekends.
Have been here 3 times and have loved all 3 meals. Had 2 Yum Cha and 1 dinner occasion. The Yum Cha is on the pricier side comparative to other Yum Cha places in Melbourne, but the delicate and elegant platting as well as the luxurious interior decor created a unique dining experience. Would definitely recommend for a “Treat Yourself” or date occasion!
Take your typical Chinese restaurant. Then take it up two levels - first on the quality of ingredients - second on service. All the flavors are very familiar, only it tastes better. Take the char siu - it's got a lovely sticky glaze shine and the fat has just rendered. Melt in your mouth stuff that balances salty and sweet. The mapo tofu looks heavy and threatening from the red shimmering oil on top but it's actually really delicate - a mild warming heat in the sauce lathering silky smooth tofu cubes. One of the signatures golden chicken, a refined version of the Dainty Sichuan classics that again is gentle on the heat so you can enjoy the garlicy chilli notes.
Recommended for a special occasion.
The fried rice goes so well with all the mains. The tenderloin beef is so tender and juicy. The truffle mushroom chicken also has a strong truffle taste and it’s good. The salted egg fried prawn also very tasty. As for the dessert we ordered the mango pudding, it has an aesthetic appearance with a yummy taste.
The ceiling lights at Yu Kitchen was very insta worthy - like a sea of glittery gold. In terms of food, we had the sweet and sour beef, spinach in broth, and ginger scallop sizzling plate. My favorite was the beef dish - tender, tasty and very interesting as I have never had battered beef before. The scallop dish was so so because the sauce tasted buttery and didn't go well with Asian flavors of ginger. The dessert was very fancy. The liquid nitrogen brought a bit of atmosphere. The red bean souffle was the softest thing I have ever tasted. Lastly in terms of drinks, we had the mango juice and a mocktail. It was a bit disappointing to pay $$ for a mocktail and it was only quarter of a cup full.

Yu Kitchen is a joint venture between a Malaysian restaurant group and Calia. You can find Yu Kitchen upstairs of Calia in the luxury precinct of Chadstone Shopping Centre. The decor of the main dining room is classy and elegant with beads hanging from the ceiling. A look at their website and you will find that this place is run by highly experienced individuals including a 2 star Michelin chef, Chen Kentaro, son of Iron Chef Chen Kenichi. Expect this place to offer high-end ingredients like lobster, abalone and wagyu beef. If you do not want to fork out as much you can dine with their yum cha menu as well.
We hadn't realised we stepped into a fancy restaurant until we saw the beautiful lights and elegant looking room. We just saw the words 'yum cha' and we were sold!
We ordered chicken feet, abalone and scrimp skin rice rolls, pork xiao long bao, tripe, sui mai, spinach and mushroom dumplings, spare ribs in black bean sauce, dumplings in spicy sauce and mango pudding.
Dishes I didn't rate chicken feet (skin was not soft, chewy), abalone rolls (mayo sauce was not to my liking), tripe (awfully chewy).
Dishes I loved: xiao long bao (perfect!), spicy dumplings, mango pudding.
Extra info: takeaway containers 50c each, tea not complimentary. Dishes were roughly $10-$12 each.
Brought here to try by a good friend who comes here quite regularly. Didn’t know a place like this exists in chaddy. Was surprised with the food and the presentation especially how they combine the traditional Chinese food and the modern touch. We were so happy that finally there is a modern Chinese restaurant in Melbourne now. Service was good as well. Especially like that the staff seems well trained when they lap my napkin. Not many Asian restaurant still do this anymore. Highlight of the day was definitely the red bean soufflé. So yum ... will definitely return!!!
Really enjoyed my dinner experience here. And the dishes we ordered were really delicious! My favorite are truffle chicken and puff rice. The PeKing ducks were very tasty. The cocktails were so creative (Oolong Martini)! The supervisor is sooooooo nice🤗🤗🤗
I’ll go back for the yumcha!!
Came for yumcha today, the service is excellent and food is great too! Would have ordered more if I have one more stomach. It’s gonna become one of my regular restaurants for sure.
Beautiful venue that’s upstairs from Calia. Came here for yumcha as they only serve yumcha during lunch time. It’s different to the traditional yumcha where they give you a piece of paper with the list of dishes and we write how many we want to order as oppose to have them come around to us and we picking what we want. They cook these dishes on demand which is great for freshness but at the same time can take a realllly long time on a busy day.
It took approx 25 mins for our first dish to come out. We ordered a couple of steamed and fried. They were all so delicious. The only thing was that xiao long bao was a let down as it was dry and deflated.
It is a bit more expensive than other places so we won’t necessarily come back regularly unless it’s a special occasion.
Beautiful interior deco, food was delicious, highly recommend the puffed rice! Staff were friendly and attention to detail, always changed fresh plates for us. Definitely come back for more!
WOW! Yu Kitchen served up an unparalleled feast, with a signature Mapo Tofu created by Michelin Two-Star chef @kentarochen ! It was definitely the most incredible Mapo Tofu I’ve ever had, and I’ve had plenty of Mapo Tofu in my day 😉 With this gorgeous interior matching the quality of flavour they’re serving up, make sure you don’t miss out !!
Really enjoyed my yumcha experience here. All the dishes we ordered were really delicious and fresh.
My favourite dish was the glutinous rice balls with peanut butter-they exploded in my mouth and it tasted incredible. Unfortunately the baked BBQ PORK BUNS were quite disappointing as they were very dry and didn’t have lots of pork inside. The fried noodles were very tasty too especially with the perfectly cooked egg.
Overall very tasty dishes however nothing too special compared to other yumcha restaurants (which are a lot cheaper )
Talk about a unique dining experience... this was definitely one of them. This dining atmosphere is so beautiful to look at, the service was wonderful and our meals did not disappoint. Fried Rice and Noodles are always my go to when eating Chinese food, and they were so tasty 😋 I’d highly recommend eating here.
My photos may look ugly but the food here is AMAZING 😋 super good food which is definitely worth the try!
Pumpkin soup with seafood was amazing. You can literally taste the seafood in the broth which is THE BOMB! Yummy! And the sweet n sour pork was also super yums! Its not like those other places where the ribs are coated with some sort of flour or something. At this place, the ribs are coated nicely with the sauce 😋 make sure you try their sweet n sour pork!
Overall, staff were polite and attentive. Food 10/10 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
What a gem in Chadstone!!! One of the most creative and visually ecstatic Chinese meal I’ve ever had plus tasted delicious!! Check out the photos. We had the 8 course banquet and we were so full by the end of it. Would highly recommend and already booked in our next meal with friends to try out more dishes! Will add more photos later.
After reading several reviews we tried this restaurant for lunch today. Firstly the entrance & ambiance is grand & welcoming. Fit out is first class & the place has a warmth about it. The menu is amazing & absolutely not your normal Chinese. The hard part is deciding what to try. We started with some Yum Cha which was so fresh & flavoursome. This is amazing Chinese food & they have broken the mould on traditional skippy Chinese food. The only negative is you see a great fit out, great ambiance, sensational food but unprofessional wait staff. They were not terrible but they were not great. We still highly recommend this restaurant
Yu Kitchen is a wonderful addition to Chadstone Shopping Centre. Located above Calia with an elegant fit-out, once inside it’s easy to forget you’re in a shopping centre.
Visiting for yum cha we ordered a variety of dumplings, some greens and the heavenly swans filled with white lotus paste to finish our meal.
From the dumplings we ordered, I really enjoyed the prawn har gow and Berkshire pork dumpling in spicy sesame dressing. The sesame dressing was beautiful and creamy with a subtle hint of spice. I like that the Xiao Long bao were served in small bowls although I would have liked a little more soup.
The highlight of the meal for me were the delicate, heavenly swans. The beautiful presentation was equally matched with a lovely sweet white lotus filling.
Overall I had a lovely experience at Yu Kitchen. The setting is exceptional with good service and we were not disappointed with the food. Despite being on the pricier side for yum cha I would definitely visit again to try out more of the menu. I give Yu Kitchen 4.5 ⭐️ out of 5.
I've been waiting a long time for authentic Chinese food to arrive in Melbourne that would bring me back to the restaurants in Singapore, Hong Kong and China and finally it has arrived. I haven't been able to try Yu Kitchen until recently but I am definitely impressed. The fresh oysters with passionfruit and moutai sorbet were one of a kind and delicious. The peking duck was also expertly prepared. My favourite was the toothfish, a little pricey but worth it! It tasted like the cod fish at Nobu but with an excellent fusion of Chinese flavours. Service is attentive and not overbearing which is what you want. Will definitely be back with friends and family.
We experienced exceptional service and faultless food at our lunchtime dining today at Yu Kitchen. We were greeted and made to feel most welcome as we were shown through this amazing visual restaurant to our table. Presented with both a la carte and a yum cha menu we perused both for quite some time as the pages revealed interesting dishes created by Michelin stared chef Chen Kentaro.
We sensibly decided to try both yum cha and a la carte menus and after a short while were presented with our yum cha course. Highlights for me included the Chicken Sui Mai while I was impressed with the delicate imperial xlb’s that delivered a delicious soup inside these small casings. Our yum cha dessert included egg custard tarts but these were seriously overshadowed by the impressive pastry works that made up the heavenly swans filled with white lotus paste.
After a pause our a la carte dishes were delivered, my first being a sizeable lobster San Choi Bao. This was so full of flavour and presented so neatly. Impressive mains followed with a the ultra tender wok seared Angus tenderloin being a deep dark dish with lightness and sweetness from honey in its own honeycomb. Our other main was a generously portioned Golden Tiger Prawns in a honey and orange glaze that worked very well with those lightly battered prawns.
We needed another pause for for two delightful desserts finished off our dining today. The impressive chocolate lava cake which had so much salted egg custard on the inside I never thought that it would stop flowing. Flavour wise and presentation wise faultless. You should definitely save room for this dish. If however you are too full perhaps try the smaller Mango and Chia seed pudding which came to the table with dry ice theatrics. Full of flavour but a little smaller perhaps.
I was genuinely surprised that a quality restaurant like this would be located within a shopping centre but in saying that if it was to be in a shopping centre then Chadstone would be it. Thanks so much for the invitation to come in and dine today.
I dined as a guest of Yu today and was blown away by the spectacular interiors. I almost couldn’t believe this stunning space existed inside a shopping centre but what an amazing respite from a busy day inside Melbourne’s fashion capital.
There was the option of yum cha or a la carte and we chose to order from both menus starting with several dumplings, prawn har gow, chicken sui mai and xiao long bao. We also had crispy calamari and fried dumpling with peanut lava filling. I really enjoyed the peanut filled dish. I was a unique one for me as I had never seen it on a menu before and I’m very glad we tried it.
The other interesting menu item we came across was the swans filled with white lotus paste. These ones are well worth trying too, not only are the a pastry masterpiece in the delicate crafting of the swan style shape but the lotus flavour is something a bit different.
We then had two a la carte mains, the prawns in honey and orange glaze which were phenomenally plated and utterly delicious. Super plump and flavourful. The other dish was Angus beef tenderloin in kampot pepper with osmanthus honey which was absolutely stellar. The flavours were simply spot on and once again it was a visual feast.
Deserts were just as flawless. We had the chocolate lava cake which oozed our salted egg. Talk about a fine example of fusion. I’ve never had salted egg in a sweet context put I love the creativity that conceived this yummy dish. The mango chia pudding was super theatrical and arrived in a cloud of smoke. It had a beautiful fruity flavour and nailed the silky texture too. Overall unbelievably impressive

Yum cha is the best in Melbourne. The quality of their dishes are top notched so I highly recommend. With great quality food, it will of course come with a higher price but worth it. I’ve tried their dinner before too and overall it was also really good.
After reading many reviews we went to Yu Kitchen today for lunch. Firstly entrance & ambiance are up there. Fit out is of a very high standard & an expensive one at that. There were 4 of us & the first thing we notice that the table was a tad small & with wine & water glasses a little too crowded for me. Menu however is amazing & not your “normal” Chinese skippy type food. No Lemon Chicken or Honey Prawns on the menu. Making a choice was difficult as we wanted to try so much. Started with some Yum Char, fresh & super tasty. We followed with Free Range Chicken & Mixed Field Mushrooms, a truly wonderful dish & highlyrecommend. There was also Crispy Berkinshire Pork & BBQ Pork all sensational. Food is “different Chinese” but first class. Only downside for us was how you can invest so much money in a restaurant & deliver amazing food but have ordinary wait staff. They tried hard but just not professional. This is an amazing Chinese Restaurant & breaking the mould. Highly highly recommend & we definitely will go back several times so we can explore the menu & the amazing food.
Nice ambiance and staff was nice and being helpful with introducing the dishes. And service is quite detail and we feel the staff is attentive enough.Food with nice presentation and we all like the idea of seafood pumpkin soup. And for sure staff explain to us how to drink the soup and they are very patient to show us as well. Also we love the salted egg lava cake, never tried before and it tasted so yum! Strongly recommend to friends and family. Will come back for sure next time.
A great-quality Chinese restaurant with comfortable atmosphere. Particularly love their chawanmushi – an unforgettable taste that is hard to find in other restaurants. The Peking duck is also nice – the portion is small but it only selects the best part of the duck. However, there are space for improvement on the barbecue pork – it’s too fatty and not saucy enough!
We came for dinner. Very posh looking set up. Prices are also on the higher end. We enjoyed all the dishes but the portions are small. Roast pork had a great crackle. Mushrooms with truffle was next level. Desserts were unique & innovative. Not somewhere I’ll go frequently but definitely indulging.
Yum Cha (I tried four dishes)
1 Baked Charcoal BBQ PORK BUN
Absolutely tasty, have to try.
2Pan Fried Turnip cake
Worth trying, but a bit salty for me
3Seasonal vegetables with oyster sauce
Was fresh.
4Baked black truffle and wagyu beef puff
-Highly recommended

We came to Yu Kitchen on a Saturday just past 11am for yum cha. We were seated immediately and were told that the seating time was 1.5hours. The restaurant is spacious and elegant. There are also tables outside for diners who want to smoke. We were given a menu to choose our food from and after a short while all of the food was served at the same time.
The food was of good quality and was executed well - for example, the xiao long bao was juicy, the pork ribs were melt in the mouth falling off the bone and the rice paper rolls were silky smooth. My favourite dish was the siew mai which were the perfect size and very moreish. As the ingredients used were more expensive than your usual dim sum, the meal was 20% more expensive than our usual yum cha.
This place is nice to come to for a quiet, classy and fancy yum cha that’s different to the traditional yum cha.
As previous reviews have stated, this isn’t like your usual yum cha when all your options are wheeled around on a cart.
Upon arrival, you are presented with a card where you select your choices and then everything is made to order. As a result, your food arrives to your table piping hot and freshly made - no chance of scoring a dumpling that has already done a couple of rounds of the restaurant here!
There isn’t as many choices as your the usual yum cha you’d find in China Town but the options are still good. We had:
- prawn har gow (good quality seafood, perfect smothered in soy)
- chicken sui mai (excellent)
- Berkshire pork dumpling with spicy sesame sauce (while it was not spicy itself, you could add some extra chilli to give it more of a kick. The dumplings themselves were nice and sat on a creamy sesame sauce which was unexpected and tasty)
- baked charcoal BBQ pork buns (sticky, sweet and dusted with a gold powder - if you’re a pork bun fan, but who isn’t?! these were a stand out)
-prawn wontons (guilty pleasure - again, made with nice seafood and fried perfectly)
The service at Yu Kitchen is excellent and despite having everything made (or cooked) to order, the food still arrived extremely quickly. This is Yum Cha that is a little bit fancy but still well priced for the quality of the food and overall service.
My husband’s got a craving for yum cha, that was why we came to this recently opened yumcha place in chadstone shopping centre. The ambiance and set out of the restaurant is very contemporary and it was a nice change from the usual Chinese restaurant decor. The place was also free of the usual crowded and noisy yumcha restaurant. The main downside of the yumcha experience was the small menu they served. However, they made up for it by the quality. All dishes were made to order so they were hot when served onto the table. The steamed dumplings also have the thinnest dumpling skin I have seen in Victoria which required effort and skill. I will be quite interested to come and try their restaurant dishes next time.
