I have tried several different dishes from this restaurant. Most of them are really delicious and I find their food pretty authentic and good quality 👍 Love their food and I can’t wait to put another food order from this restaurant in the future!
Very busy atmosphere and great decor. Food was average but the variety meant some dishes were better than others, so I'd consider going back to explore more.
newly opened in the little outside dining area near the buses, these guys aaalways have a line on the weekends. the longest we waited was around 35 minutes one time! sadly, it is sometimes hit and miss depending on the chef. the first time we came the dumpling skins were the thinnest we’ve ever had in melbourne and were bursting with flavour. next time round, they felt thick and almost gluggy. staff can also be a bit rude and not admit when it’s THEIR mistake. :(

Stopped by here for some celebratory Chinese cuisine after a hard week of exams. We ordered a variety of dishes for our table, but the only dishes I can recall were the Shanghai noodles, xiao long bao, fried rice, fried crispy chicken ribs with Sichuan dried chilli, seasoned Asian greens, and pork wonton with chilli vinegarette.
All these dishes were perfectly seasoned, full of flavour and spicy kicks. No dish fell short of flaws, and the quality of their ingredients were worthy of their fine dining experience. The chicken ribs were still juicy, and together with the dried chilli and crispy coating, equals an enjoyable explosion of flavour. The meat in xiao long bao was still juicy, and the soup filling inside was abundant. The fried rice was definitely addicting, as well as the shanghai noodles. The proportion for this rice and noodle dish, however, was little for the price you pay. Nonetheless, the quality of their products makes the price reasonable, and the experience worth returning for.
Seating is very spacious and elegant, with a nicely themed decor that takes you on a journey to China and their Sichuan flavours. Small complaint would be their service can be slow at times, but they managed to whip out freshly made dishes. They have so much more dishes I have yet to try, and will be coming back to try them.
Sam kecskes - this boy has done an awesome service to us. Me and my husband visited this restaurant on 30/06 , and we had delightful dinner. Dishes were delicious and definitely to mention that young chap service. Thank you again for a wonderful food and hospitality. All the best brother and you deserve so much appreciation.

1. Crab and pork xiao long bao ($15.80)
Excellent, probably the best dumplings I've every had 10/10.
2. Xo Prawn fried rice ($16.50)
Great flavour and texture, not spicy though!
Recommended, but could've done with some more ingredients, like fish cake, something like that to liven it up! Decent amount of prawns though. 8/10
3. Braised beef noodles ($14.80)
Very flavourful, similar taste to dragon hot pot but less spicy! Good amount of tender beef, recommended 9/10
Overall, $45 for 3 great dishes, will be back!

- Black truffle xiao long bao
The pork inside the bao was perfectly cooked and absolutely writhing in flavour. Not really any hint of black truffle to it but delicious nonetheless.
LIT!: 🔥truffle xiao long baos were the stand out! Rich in truffle flavour and dumpling skin was soft and thin. We also had the minced peas which was salty so perfect with rice for extra flour.
NOT SO LIT: 🙃the special braised beef noodles are better at Lan Zhou in my opinion but still pretty tasty.
I heard the pan fried dumplings are great here so I’ll be back to try. Thanks for having us x
Usually quite busy restaurant. Staff are sometimes not attentive or look over you. Food is quite good. Chilli wontons are the best. We always keep the sauce from the chilli wontons to put on almost every other dish we order. I’d suggest getting in just before the lunch crowd otherwise you might have to queue.

It’s affordable and definitely delicious too! Some of our faves are the xiao long bao and the drunken chicken which we always get!
There’s often a bit of a queue, but it doesn’t really take long because the restaurant is quite big!
Whenever there's a special occasion, we always go to Red Shanghai.
It's always busy and for good reason. The dumplings are phenomenal. The range and the amount of flavour packed into the dumplings is amazing. I can't say the same for the noodle dishes which I found quite average.
The service however is incredibly slow especially when it's busy and I have had an occasion where they had forgotten about my order.
But whenever I have a cravings for really good dumplings, Shanghai Red hits the spot.
This is my fourth time being here. Shanghai Red is just located near the entrance of Chadstone. The restaurant is very busy with insufficient amount of staff but the food is very delicious. Their xiaolongbao is extremely juicy and the filling is just on point which is the BEST xiaolongbao that I have had in Melbourne. Some food I recommend:
1. Steamed original xiao long bao (Must try)
2. Pork wonton with hot chilli
3. Slow cooked braised pork belly
Look at the amount of ginger given - clearly insufficient. Service was also poor. No sauce bowls were nor common spoons were provided
I’m starting to love the food in Chadstone now.
Not the biggest fan of Chinese food usually as it tends to be more oily and greasy but I’m a sucker for good dumplings (soup, steamed, fried - i love them all).
One of the best dumpling places in Melbourne. Been here about 4 times now and the quality of food has been excellent. Like most Chinese places around Melbourne, the service tends to be subpar.
Every time we usually get a selection of xiao long bao, steamed & fried dumplings with a side of their drunken chicken starter.
Very tasty fillings and packed perfectly. I definitely recommend their Szechuan Xiao long bao and also their steamed pork & cabbage dumplings.
Will keep returning to this place whenever we feel like good dumplings.
Really loved the dumplings here! I had the soup ones and they were cooked really nicely and the broth was delicious too! Will defs have to come back to try some other dishes
HANDS DOWN BEST PAN-FRIED BUNS! Personally preferred the chicken/prawn rather than the pork ones, as they tasted sweeter and were more fragrant.
Had their Shanghai Fried Noodles as well but there was really nothing mind-blowing about it.

Have been to Shanghai Red repeatedly for their pan fried pork buns, they are a must try; sweet fluffy bun with a soup inside!! You can see the xiao long baos being made right there and they are seriously so good; they have hot soup in them and it is so flavoursome. We tried the steamed original xiao long bao and steamed Szechuan xiao long bao - preferred the original better. Also tried the Shanghai style sweet and sour barramundi with pine nuts - delicious; tasted like any sweet and sour dish. Also tried the fragrant crispy chicken ribs with szechuan dry chilli - one word - yum!! Don’t be deterred by the long line outside, it moves quick and is so worth it!
Every like saves a poor dumpling from the streets 😢

The food tastes similar to what you'd get in Shanghai. Ordered the smashed cucumber, smoked fish, truffle xiao long bao, crab & pork xiao long bao, and deep fried ice cream ball. The deep fried ice cream had a nice crisp coating stuffed with a good amount of ice cream, but it didn't come with the strawberry and icing sugar displayed on the menu. Would've tasted nicer with the strawberry.
Visited this restaurant after work. Ordered the original, truffle and crab and pork xiao long bao. The dumplings were tasty but i felt there needed to be more soup. The chicken and prawn buns were delicious and crispy. The egg yolk custard sesame balls were crispy however i would have preferred a stronger flavoured custard.
The food is amazing, very juice and tasty, the staff very friendly and really fast moving. Look after my baby with smile. We order 4 dish and 1 soup, because it is so good , so that I forget to take all photos. The sea food tofu soup so so good we order 2 times because it is not enough for first one.
The price is a little bit pricey but as you know it locate in shopping mall . You will understand.

The truffle xiaolongbao is a bit unique..juicy inside and tastes good. The fried rice is good portion with prawns. Chicken rice wine entree is nice too, infused with wine...
Pleasantly surprised with the quality of food here considering we never had many great experience with restaurants in a mall. The truffle XLB definitely have the truffle flavour. The Shanghai Fried noodle was the star of the meal for us. The soy and vinegar dumpling was pretty good and have thin skin. The egg yolk bun and the cold noodle can be better.
Xiao Long Bao: Pork steamed juicy goodness!! Absolutely my favourite place to grab a few dumplings that would never disappoint. Filled with so much flavour that bursts in your mouth as soon as you take a bite. Only at $10.80 for 8pcs it is truely well worth every cent!!

Dumplings were not the best I had but they were ok...the massive XLB was heaps better! Lovely soup and filled with crab meat.
The fried rice cake with sweet vinegar meat was good but the best dish was by far the shanghai fried noodle! The flavour was soooooo good and the noodle was amazing too! Coming back here again shortly...heaps of items on the menu to try.
Went there for dinner tonight and would love to go back. Definitely the best Schezwan xiao long bao i have ever had. Fish in chilly oil was delicious too.
Came here especially for the xiao long bao. The xiao long boa were colourful, delicious and soft. My favourite was the black truffle bao. It is kind of unique and full of flavour. The pan fried pork buns and XO fried were good but the Szechuan noodle was too spicy for me.
Love this restaurant! Me and my partner come here for dinner after our shift at work or even with friends. It’s great for both a nice night out or casual dinner. Our order is always for the Pan Fried Original Pork Bun which is the best on the menu! As well as the Original Xiao Long Bao and Pork & Chive Dumplings. Great setup and atmosphere and great food 🙂
Love this new dumpling house at Chadstone. There are others in the centre but this is by far is the best. There is often a line but it moves quite quickly in particular when you’re in a group of 2. We had the original XLB, poached Chinese broccoli and chicken and prawn dumplings! Worth the queue and great value for money
The xiao long bao here are to DIE FOR ! Really yum, I’ve never had truffle before and not a fan of mushroom but I tried the truffle XLB and it was great. The Szechuan chicken noodles were packed with flavour as well, but the portion size could be a bit larger. We tried a whole range of dishes, and nothing ceased to impress in terms of flavour. The only cons is the HUGE line outside, went on a Friday night at around 6pm and was waiting for 30 minutes outside.
We ordered the Xiao Long Bao Truffle, Pan-fried Pork dumplings, special Braised Beef Noodles, Pork Wonton with hot chilli vinaigrette and the egg custard buns.
I could not taste the truffle in the XLB but I would like to give it another try together with the original just to taste the difference.
The dumplings were a hit, the hubby and my daughter demolished them before a decent photo was taken.
I was a bit disappointed with the special braised beef noodles. It was flavourful but a bit too oily for my tastes.
The egg custard buns were a delightful surprise. it was so soft and warm and not too sweet. My daughter loved them so much we ordered 4 more to take home.
Overall it was a very good experience. I would love to bring my mother and brothers next time.
Was finally able to try Shanghai Red after much anticipation, the xiao long bao had a good amount of soup and the skin was not too thick or thin. Zha jiang mian was delicious was perfectly cooked noodles & minced pork. Both dishes were enough to suffice 2 servings, although noodle portion was on the smaller side. Although it may seem pricey for Chinese food, it is similar to that of New Shanghai and reasonable seeing as it is situated at Chadstone. Service was also efficient & friendly, would definitely come back again to try other dishes!
This is our favourite go to place for pan fried pork buns and XLB. Been here many times and never disappoint. Friendly service and food friendly.
Had the chicken and mushroom dumplings and could easily be the best dumplings I've eatan. The filling was well combined and balanced and the skin was perfect, could not fault.. The hand made noodles with spring onion was very good. Nice subtle flavor and noodle was cooked perfect so great accompaniment. The veg dumps however where visually nice but well overcooked and stodgy. Unfortunately my only greavence but will definitely be back to sample more.
I love this place. Best in chadstone. Consistent delicious dumplings! There is always a line out the front on a weekend but it goes pretty fast and worth the wait. The dumplings are a must here. The prawn and seafood, truffle soup dumplings, plain prawn dumplings and the chilli wontons are stand outs for me! The spring rolls are nice also. I highly recommend this restaurant. Yum yum yum! Service is fantastic also.

We are massive fans of Szechuan food so we ordered the spicy dishes. The Szechuan xiao long baos were a delicious twist on the original pork versions. It had a kick of the spice but wasn’t overpowering. The Dan Dan noodles came with a thick peanut sauce with an added Szechuan kick. It was one of the best ones in Melbourne we have tried. We also really enjoyed the mapo tofu. However, the Szechuan chilli on that dish was extra spicy so be careful!
My favourite dish was probably the custard buns. They weren’t the usual thick consistency custard that you usually get at Chinese restaurants. The custard inside was warm and oozed out. It is a just try!

Shanghai Red is located on the outside restaurant area of Chadstone Shopping Centre. There’s usually a line on the weekends but fear not, tables clear fast and you’ll get a seat in no time. The restaurant is really spacious and have tons of tables.
I came here on two occasions and in terms of the savoury dishes, both times were great. However, the desserts were quite the let down.
We ordered the dan dan spicy pork Mince Noodles which I really enjoyed. I liked the texture of the thin noodles and also the small kick of spiciness. The sauce has a peanut- like taste.
We ordered the xiao long bao in the original and the truffle. I really liked both of them! The truffle one had a really unique taste, you can really taste the truffle! Also you can’t go wrong with the original pork! The xiao long bao were extremely juicy and flavoursome and I highly recommend trying them!
We also tried the pan fried pork dumpling. I wasn’t the biggest fan of these. They kinda tasted like the ones you get from cheap dumpling stores. They weren’t crispy at the bottom and also the skin was quite chewy. I preferred their pan fried originally pork bun which was really nice! They had a bit of juice in the inside and were fried perfectly.
The wontons were delicious as well! I liked the filling in the wontons and the chilli vinaigrette used. It wasn’t too spicy. Definitely give this one a go!
We also tried to shanghai fried noodles which were delicious! It was full of flavour and the portions were very generous.
Looking around the restaurant, definitely don’t over order because the sizes of each dish is quite large.
Our least favourite dishes were the desserts. The mango panna cotta had too much gelatine in it. The texture wasn’t right. The custard bun was average. The custard filling was runny and very grainy.
Overall, I highly recommend coming here for their savoury dishes! They’re quite cheap and the portion sizes are huge. The service is extremely fast as well.
You can find this restaurant outside the of the shopping centre across other restaurants like papparich. It’s really busy and for a good reason. Food is not too expensive and the portions and the the taste is really good.

Gorgeous addition to Chadstone’s growing eateries. There is always a queue outside the restaurant, although it moves quickly.
Nice decor inside, retro style. Service is prompt, and most importantly food is excellent!
We ordered the jellyfish, original xiaolongbao and newly added pomfret in soy sauce. All of them are flavourful, and I especially enjoy the sweet and salty crunchy balance of the jellyfish entree. Soup in xiaolongbao was still piping hot, pity not wnough ginger provided - had to request for more.
Love everything, including the kumquat drink! Will be back for more

Amazing and comforting chinese food perfect for winter in Melbourne. ❄️ The xiao long baos were the star of the show for me - the rich broth enveloped in a silky dumpling skin! 🥟 The other dishes we ordered were sumptuous as well! 😋 For the portion & taste, it is extremely reasonably priced! 👍🏻I finally understand why it is such a crown favourite! I heard the lines do get pretty crazy during peak hours so you might want to avoid that like I did or make a booking prior. 📞
When we arrived there was a line with about 10 people waiting - we still got in within 5 minutes. Service was great, food arrived quickly. Good portions, good vibe - would recommend :)
Two of us dropped in 6pm on a freezing Monday night. It didn't take long to be seated. It didn't take long either for our orders to arrive - double serves of the Steamed Original XLBs and the Pork Wontons in Chili Vinagrette. Shlurpingly tasty and more-ish - what more can I say?

The dumplings from here were excellent. Lovely, juicy, and with a nice thin dumpling skin. The Xiao long bao were a highlight. We also ordered chilli eggplant which was tops. Will definitely return.
Excellent dumplings. We tried the chicken/prawn and the beef ones and they were outstanding. The crowd is mostly Asian people, which tells you that the food is authentic and good quality.
No reservations accepted, walk-in only, but worth the wait in line.
Service it's really fast, especially for steam dishes which come out pretty quickly. Fried dishes may take a little longer.
4th visit, food has been fairly consistent in tadte and portions.
Good size portions to share, service is quick. Asking questions about a dish can be awarded.

Finally went for lunch there, after walking past it many times during trips to Chadstone. Always very busy but service was prompt and friendly. Food came out quickly too and was delicious. We got some prawn dumplings to start, which were delicately balanced and perfectly cooked. For mains we had noodles in shallot oil, and some cumin lamb. Both dishes were very tasty. The presentation of the lamb was a bit unique, and the meat was tender and juicy. Although, I have had cumin lamb elsewhere that packs bit more of a punch. Great meal overall. Will definitely make it a go to place for lunch while at Chadstone.
Affordable dining experience for a family group Within 8-10 minute all food come out after we ordered.
Dishes were delicious as usual and staff is very friendly.
The food was authentic and delicious. The presentation was excellent. Would highly recommend to anyone that loves dumplings.
The only let down was that the staff were a little “slow”. They seem to struggle with a simple requests. Speaking Chinese to them didn’t help 🙄
Had forgotten to take some photos while eating 😅 the Drucker chicken. Was tasty. The Xiaolongbao was nice, as the skin was thin and if it didn't break while trying to pick it up combined the meat and soup well. The Hargow skin was a bit too thin and and fall off easily.
And the egg York bao was really nice, just before as the York is very hot.
Great authentic chinese food, their dumplings especially truffle xiao long bao are really good! Oh did I forget to mention their drunken chicken? Very yummy too!
This is one of our favourite dinner places. Xiaolong bao is the best with black truffle. Fried barramundi, salted egg yolk shrimp, and braised pork are very well cooked. Remember pay with Liven so you get some money back 😄
