Review Din Tai Fung (chatswood) - Chatswood

Green Bananas
Unfortunately, other than the xiao long bao still amazing here (the new mala flavour is great too) everything else we had was average or below average, especially considering the price, portion and quality. The noodles are decent in flavour (soup ones were bland), but not worth the price. The stir fries we tried (kung pao chicken, green bean minced pork, sweet and sour chicken, and a battered prawn dish) were average in flavour and tiny portions but the price is ridiculous for what you get. The gold prawn pancake was tasty but the portion size was pitiful. After spending approx. $30 - $50 each, NO ONE WAS SATISIFED AND STILL HUNGRY.............

Noodle was overcooked and soggy. Pork and duck was drier than sahara desert, it felt and tasted like it was reheated meal from the night before. Xiao Long Bao was room temperature inside. Crispy chicken was mostly just dough and not much chicken. Service was mediocre. Robot was just blasting unnecessarily loud music. Overpriced. Chatswood DTF is not worth checking out. Please do not go here! Go to World Square instead.

Robotic restaurant from the future 🤖 This Din Tai Fung has automated pretty much everything from taking you to your table by robot escort, ordering from an iPad and food delivery from a friendly robot. Also amazing dumplings & other dishes!!! Worth going just for the experience. Also a big fan of their frozen offering. Is pretty mad and not so relaxing in there however.
Jessie Hu
Their Xiao long bao was average but I love the prawn pot sticker, chilli wonton and chicken or pork cutlet. The robot service was interesting.
Sandy L
Food was good as always. The dial long baos are always consistent and a must order. Robots serve majority of the food which is entertaining particularly to watch.
Edwin Pang
Incredible food, especially dumplings. May have to wait for a seat. Prices are a bit high for some meals but it's definitely worth the price. Ordering is very simple as there are iPads. There is also a robot which brings the food to your table which lowers the chance of any spillage. The staff are extremely friendly as well. The portion sizes are perfect and so are the dumplings. The mango ice cream is also very tasty.

Went to Chatswood store today after the lockdown. The service was not great. Dumpling were cold, fried rice with pork chop, the pork was dry and hard to bite. Ordered noodles soup and it was not hot. The dumpling was leaking when it was served. It was not good at all for today. They were busy with take away and not paying full attention to customer dinning in. Disappointed. It is not how it should be for a famous brand.

Not really worth the hype. Pretty basic Chinese food and definitely not worth the price. The female waiter was also very rude and did not greet us at all, she just stared at us at the door. We also asked to be seated at a different table as it was very close to other diners and was definitely NOT covid safe (we visited while there were still 1.5m restrictions). However the rude female waiter pulled the table 2cm away from the original space and looked at us, and with an annoyed tone asked "better?". Extremely overpriced basic Chinese food and terrible waiter.

Great Chinese food and clean and nice plave to dine in.
CSKN
Tasty food, but the portions are smaller compared to other places and expensive.

Came here for a weekend lunch. They serve a large variety of food including noodles, dumplings, meat dishes and many more.
The seating are is very spacious and can accommodate large groups of people.
Everything I ordered was delightful but my favourite was the truffle fried rice.

We were in Chatswood looking for a light lunch when we came across Din Tai Fung. Their xiao long baos were absolutely amazing. It should be noted that their shredded ginger is now only available on request but their food is still fantastic! We also had their vegetarian mushroom truffle fried rice which was also perfection. The flavors melded perfectly for this dish: the earthiness of the mushrooms pairs with the truffle oil like a match made in heaven. Would definitely recommend this place but keep in mind that there may sometimes be a wait as it’s quite a popular venue, particularly during peak dining hours.
Jessica
Waited over an hour for some mediocre food... also service was not the best, they weren’t terrible but it was evident that they didn’t care. They also forgot our plates so we couldn’t eat until 15 minutes later even though we asked for played when we first got seated

When we arrived here on a Sun night at 6.30pm, the place was pretty full, and there was a small line of people queueing up outside, waiting for tables to become available. Always a good sign. Luckily, we had taken the precaution of booking ahead, so we just sailed in and were seated right at the back near to the service desk.

The atmosphere is casual and laid back, with fast service; it’s not the kind of place that you’re likely to linger all night, so it didn’t really matter that we didn’t have the best spot. In any event, there were only three of us, and this was a table with six chairs, so we were easily able to fit all the dishes and drinks without too much trouble.

They have an unusual self-ordering system that I hadn’t seen before. You’ll find a sheet of paper on your table, pre-printed with all the different menu choices You fill in the quantity of each dish that you want and hand that to a waiter. To know exactly what you’re ordering, there’s a proper menu on laminated sheets in a leather bounder, complete with prices and pictures, to help you to choose.

Having made our selection we handed the sheet over to our friendly waiter and within about 15 minutes, the dishes were on our table, steaming hot. We ordered two kinds of dumplings: chicken ($12) and vegetarian ($11). There were six pieces to a serve. For mains, we shared a beef in black pepper sauce ($26), a sweet and sour pineapple chicken ($19), spinach in garlic ($15) and two serves of boiled rice at $5 a pop, and a single drink. All up, after our 25% Ent Bk discount (up to max $25) we paid a reasonable $68 for that lot.

The food was outstanding. Everything was fresh and flavoursome and served in generous portions. The dumplings were melt-in-your-mouth softness with tasty fillings of vegetables or chicken mince. The main dishes did not disappoint. The beef was tender and well cooked, with a tangy, slightly spicy peppery sauce, and served with a smattering of onions and green peppers. The sweet and sour pineapple chicken had crunchy and succulent pieces of battered chicken in a fragrant, sweet and sour sauce, served with diced pineapples, shallots and peppers. What an excellent dish that was. The accompaniments were pretty good too: the spinach in garlic sauce was a simple, but refreshing dish, and together with the fluffy white rice, they made the perfect complement to the meat and the dumplings. We all enjoyed our meals.

The decor is modern and stylish, with strong lighting and comfy, sturdy wooden furniture. Ambience was lively and energetic, but being mostly family groups, it never became too loud or noisy and we were able to easily converse. Tables are well spaced out, and cleverly arranged in such a way as to allow waiters and guests to move around easily. It doesn’t feel cramped or claustrophobic.

The service was friendly, polite and efficient. These guys are clearly well trained and know exactly what to do. There was no long wait for the food to be delivered or payment to be taken: It all runs like a well oiled machine. Once we finished our meals, we simply took the docket up to the service desk to make our payment.

Being at the Westfield Shopping Plaza at Chatswood affords two advantages over other restaurants that aren’t in a shopping centre. There’s plenty of parking in the centre car park, and it’s free after 6pm. And, there are ample toilets, and they’re clean, easy to find and well stocked.

We had a pleasant evening here and it all ran smoothly. Our booked table was ready and waiting for us. The place has a nice, relaxed, but lively atmosphere, the food is first class, with efficient and fast service to match, and reasonable prices. Add to that, the easy parking and adequate toilets and you have a winning combo, which explains the healthy turnout. We’ll certainly be back!

Located inside Westfield Chatswood, this place gets busy very quickly and it can be difficult to get a table on weekends. Service is very efficient, food is served quickly. The menu is quite varied and there is a huge selection of dumplings, noodles, rice and main dishes. Dumplings and dishes are very well executed and non-greasy. The ice cream is pretty decent too!

We ordered a bunch of dishes and drinks to try our. I ordered the vegetarian dandan noodles which were chewy and delicious. My friends ordered a variety of pork and seafood xiao long bao which they said was yummy and tasty. I loved the strawberry bubble tea as well.

The wait at Din Tai Fung is always worth it. Their dumplings never disappoint. It’s always our go to option before a movie as they are always quick and efficient (even if you have a wee wait for a table). And I never tire watching them make dumplings. It’s such a production! #dintaifung

I am not sure if these people are compliant with workplace laws in Australia, however they make a hell of a good dumpling and for that they can get away with anything in my book. I believe this was the original shop in Sydney, great service just feel a little sorry for the dumpling makers locked in glass box.
Hilton
The signature steam pork dumplings are really nice as usual. The chili prawn noodles with egg was very disappointing. It’s like a quick cant be bothered weekday night stir noodles at home. everything is overpriced compared to any other shanghainese in Sydney.
Strawberry_vee
Din Tai Fung is a popular restaurant that specialises in dumplings and noodles. I love going there and eating their different varieties of xiao long bao, the pastry is so thin and the soup is so flavourful.
Cait
Excellent food, quick and easy service. Vegan/vegetarian options - I ordered peanut noodles (vegetarian option selected on menu), spicy vegetable wontons and vegetarian fried rice with no egg. All delicious and we finished them off! will come back here many more times!
Eunifoodie
I highly recommend getting their fried chicken cutlet with fried rice! Super crispy fried chicken and very nicely seasoned. I’ve had their giant xiao long bao and it was ssooooo not worth it. There was a tiny piece of meat in it and was just mainly filled with soup. Just stick with the normal xiao long bao - the skin is thin and the soup is flavourful.
Jo Kim
The food here is AMAZING, i can’t complain but one thing is the xiao long bao does get cold quickly / doesn’t arrive as hot as usual.. the sesame balls are to die for (probs the highlight). it is a little more on the pricey side but it’s worth it.
OmNom
Constant flow of people filling up this well known dumpling place throughout most days.

With their large menu selection comprising anything from traditional steam dumplings to pepper beef cubes and prawns you are bound to find something you like.

Quality of food is very good for dumpling place standard, and this is also reflected in the above average dumpling-place price they charge. Services are prompt.
Jenny
The food didn’t taste good, it was way over priced and the amount of food was lacking, I wouldn’t recommend if you expect authentic Chinese food
Mikayla Shanahan
Best wonton noodle soup I’ve ever had (I got the recommended shrimp and pork wontons). Vegetarian buns were yummy too, just overall tasted soo fresh

Honestly feel that the Din Tai Fung chain in Sydney have really dropped in quality. Their dumplings & service are tip top overseas, and even in their early days here we're pretty good and was well worth waiting for 30-45 mins for. However this time at the Chatswood branch for late dinner on a Tuesday night. The place wasn't busy, but the waitress want us to sit right at the entrance. We asked to move to where other diners were instead. It was still some time to closing, but a few of the items were not available. We ended up getting a couple styles of dumplings, which tasted good, and a Cha Jiang mince pork rice, which had hardly any flavours. Service was average.
Bw_betman
Great for days when you’ve no idea what to get for dinner. Quality is always consistent so you can always count on getting the dishes you know and love.
Ann
Food was more than ordinary. nothing special. Noodles and dumplings over priced but doesn't taste wonderful.
The service was excellent, like the best Chinese restaurant i have ever been in Sydney.
Xlittlecupcake
My first time visiting the Chatswood DTF and I didn’t enjoy it as much as the World Square store, found the dishes there a bit saltier. Of course I ordered the XLBs and spicy wonton noodle dish (my 2 fav), as well as the fried chicken, truffle fried rice, and a couple of entrees. Service here was standard, if you haven’t tried DTF before and u love XLBs then I highly recommend it.

If True Love could be described as a food, for me there would be no other that I would be as sincere, devoted and loyal to as my adoration of the dumplings at Din Tai Fung. If they would open in Brisbane, I would pretty much move house next to the store so I could eat there three meals a day and die happy. But unfortunately they have still yet to open in Brisbane, so in the meantime I travelled to Chatswood with Queen V to have some dumplings at their Westfield store.
High Tea Queen
Ordered:
1. Vegetarian bun - I personally think the vegetarian filling taste bette than the meat ones
2. Vegetarian dumpling - I prefer this over their famous pork dumpling, I sometimes find that their pork dumplings are a bit under cooked
3. Stir fried vegetables - amazingly good, they just taste way better than your average stir fried veggies from other restaurants, I have no idea how they do it and what they put in it
4. Fried pork with fried rice - again the best fried pork and fried rice in Australia and probably in the world, I always wondered how they make their fried rice so good, something so simple yet so tasty, I hardly order fried rice when I go out unless it is from Din Tai Fung or if I’m having teppanyaki.
5. Chicken soup noodle - their chicken soup is nice but the noodles from here are not excellent, the chicken soup from the Taiwan stores are way better than the Australian stores
6. Tofu entree - refreshing, I just eat the tofu and pork floss, I won’t touch the black egg
7. Sour and spicy soup - average good
8. Mango ice dessert - refreshing, I love the condense milk
9. Taro dumpling/black sesame bun- love these two dessert dishes

Will I go back: yes of course, I’m so grateful Sydney has this, I remember going to their original first non fancy looking restaurant in Taiwan when I was a kid, it was before they took over the world. Now they just need to open one in Brisbane. The Taiwan menu has more yummy desserts and food, I hope one day they bring those dish to Australia as well.
Tencents
First time here and quite impressed. Their prawn and pork dumplings in chilli sauce are excellent. Fried rice is good. The braised beef noodles reminds me of instant noodles( the one with real beef) The Cha Jian noodle (like a Chinese spaghetti) was good too. The downside are the Portion/price of their dishes.

You know what? I still want more of that prawn and pork dumplings in chilli sauce.
Jimmy Prasetio
Love their dumpling menus, specially the xiao lung bao or pork dumplings, the service was really good, the restaurant was clean and have nice atmosphere
Pignic_
This is one of my favourite chinese restaurants in Sydney. There are always a lot of people lining up for it so be prepared to wait. Food i would recommend ordering are: xiao lung bao (dumplings) / fried chicken noodles (the fried chicken is soooo crispy and yum) / spicy dumpling noodles / prawn fried rice. They are all super delicious! The must try dessert is definitely the RED BEAN FRIED BREAD! It's extra crispy and the sweetness is just right! You'll fall in love after trying it once too!

For more foodie snaps, please follow me on instagram: @pignic_

The dumplings are definitely what they are famous for!!! The rest is just very average food and over priced for what it is. Would just go for the dumplings if anything!

Delicious! Definitely try the xiao long bao and the truffle dumplings yum yum yum. The wait for a table isn't long and the food comes out fairly quickly. Good mannered and professional staff complete the great experience :)
Rebecca
Din Tai Fung is a Taiwanese dumpling house which consistently makes Xiao Long Bao that doesn't break or leak. The truffle dumplings were underwhelming but the spicy ones are my standard favorites.
Love At First Bite
Find us on instagram: loveatfirstbite_aus

Great dumpling place, we tried their huge xiao long bao and was disappointed with the lack of meat inside and huge amount of soup, also tried their colourful dumplings and they tasted great and had unique flavours but found them to be overpriced. Preferred their more basic dumplings, they are the best!
Ned
DTF in Taipei was a very memorable dining experience, and definitely the best xiao long bao I've had by far.

While the Chatswood branch doesn't come close to the real deal, it still has some pretty decent xiao long baos. Sadly however, it's the only thing on the menu worth getting, as the selection of other dishes are overpriced and very standard.

However that being said, if I wanted xiao long bao in Chatswood I would still go New Shanghai, just because it's nice to get some variety with pan fried buns and other dishes. If I wanted standard Taiwanese food Baodao across the road is much cheaper and faster.

A while ago I was visiting Sydney and saw Din Tai Fung, so I give it a try cause I often eat their food in my hometown Jakarta.

At first I was surprised there was so many different menu compare to their branch in Jakarta or even Singapore branch. And also surprised that some of their staff actually are Indonesian, they said some of them are originally from Jakarta's branch. It's quite unique that Din Tai Fung in here has some kind of buzzer device. They will buzz that device when our table is ready which is very helpful if there is long queue.

For the food taste, as expected from michelin star restaurants, always good wherever I eat their food hehe. Staff also friendly and helpful. BTW it takes time until the food arrive at our table but still acceptable.

Xiao long bao's (steamed soup dumplings) are always a delight here but the rest can be given a pass.
The soup dumplings are authentic and tastes just like the ones in Shanghai however the cbd outlets (even the outlet in the Westfield food court) do a better job making all the other dishes. The spicy wonton cold noodles, sauce n noodles yum but wontons were way over cooked it was dry or they left an ingredient out.
Truffle dumpling was so wrong on so many levels. Expensive and disappointing, the flavours just didn't work.
I've had the chicken schnitzel and it was under fried - tasted floury.
Sesame noodles - undercooked which meant it also tasted floury 😓.
I cannot comprehend how it's even possible to undercook noodles considering it takes 20-40mins to get a dish out even when they're only at 40% capacity.
Andrew Rottinger
I love their dumplings and soups. Food is very fresh. Place is very clean and efficiently run. I don't need to say more but silly Zomato insists
Foodbuffy
Terrible service. They gave us the bill without asking and showed massive attitude when applying discount. Also put loud music to get us to leave. It was 8.40 pm. Restaurant took last order at 8.30 .they literally chased us away
Nidhi Madan
Always love din Tai !! This one is no exception. The service was great - food probably not as good as the cbd joint but still better than most other places I've eaten at.

Intrigued by the concept of rainbow dumplings, I decided to take the plunge and visit Din Tai Fung for the first time. Located in a relatively isolated corner of Chatswood Westfield, the restaurant draws the eye with their ~kawaii~ dumpling mascot. Upon entering the restaurant, customers are greeted by a large view into the kitchen where chefs are carefully crafting endless amounts of dumplings...

For the price of the food, I would expect something better from their food and service. Better luck next time.
Lin
love to come here to get some delicious dumplings. order food and get it super quick, bun was nice and hot, a little small than i imagine but it was quite good anyway
Mr No Cheese!
I've been here over a dozen times , good consistency on food quality but need a little bit more variety. The soup dishes are a little too light on flavors except for the sweet and sour soup, that is spot on. My favorite dish at this particular establishment. The staff are helpful and over ambient is pretty good. A good spot for a casual after work dinner if you're not after anything fancy and is in the mood for some good dumplings!
Jin & Jase
Believe it or not, this is the first time I've tried Din Tai Fung (DTF) and I must admit that the food is not half bad...but it's the service at the Chatswood store that impressed me most. We ordered the much-hyped Shrimp and Pork Wonton Noodle Dipped in a Spicy Sauce ($13.80) and also the Kimchi Pork Dumplings ($12.80). The shrimp and pork wonton noodle was pretty good with that numbing peppercorn and dry chilli kick. The wontons itself were nothing special though. I really enjoyed the kimchi pork dumplings filled with actual flavourful kimchi, however, they were quite pricey. I would probably return again to try other dishes but I fear the food at DTF are overpriced for what they are.
Suiyanyan
Where's my green bean? It is the second time that my green bean dish failed to arrive. The couple who ordered at the same time as us git their green beans and all their dishes 15 minutes before us. It is a case of gross mismanagement in the kitchen. 45mins in and we are still waiting for a fried rice and pork chops. The couple who sat down after us had already left minutes ago.
Billylamb
Xiao long bao is nicer at other restaurants around Chatswood but is still tasty. Not quite up to the same standards as it's international branches. The giant xiao long bao they had as a special was more fun than tasty. The soup was delicious by after having that you were left with thick and some parts dry wrapping.
Getinmybelly
•Authentic Taiwanese cuisine - lively atmosphere and reasonable waiting times
•Drunken chicken - the chicken meat was quite tough, perhaps they had it frozen and defreezed it? Otherwise well drunken!
•Xiao long bao - not as good as the ones you get from Taste of Shanghai but still tasty
•Spicy shrimp wonton - I love the sauce on this, excellent!
•Cha jiang noodles - quite filling, taste slightly bland, bit of salt and pepper does the trick!
•Truffle xiao long bao - truffles!!!! Nothing else needed to say
•Giant xiao long bao - pretty much a mini soup inside
•Avocado drink - nice smoothie texture, perfect for a summers day
Seeaych
They have an effective system for managing customer flow - buzzers at the entrance and cashier at the opposite end of the restaurant. Everything worked smoothly during our lunch visit. The food was really tasty and the service was most impressive even though the place was absolutely packed. Excellent overall!

Ok, I admit it. We caved in and jumped on the band wagon of the newest thing in dumplings since the invention of the xiao long bao… the GIANT xiao long bao! We, along with our friend, just had to try it as it was available at Din Tai Fung for a limited time only. Vegetarian fried rice with egg
Agatha Lee
We got there at about 1pm and were told it would be a 20-25 minute wait for a table, and they give you the menu where you select the food that you want which is a great way to pass time, but we ended up getting a table within 15 minutes. Service was great, very attentive even though the restaurant was very busy. What surprised us was when our serve of xiao lung bao's came, the waitress took it back straight away saying it wasn't hot enough and swapped it straight away with another one which was steaming. Food was great, everything tasted really nice. The only criticism we could give was that the giant dumpling we were expecting a different type of soup in it, but it said giant dumpling and didn't say giant xiao lung bao, so I guess it really was just our wrong assumption from the beginning. We also love the fact that you get to watch the chefs make the dumplings, and just the amount of skill that goes into it.

Noodle soup with chicken chop is my absolute favourite. The soup is perfectly fragrant and absolutely delicious. The fried chicken chop is crispy and the flavour is incredible. This is a must have dish!!

Din Tai Fung has a Giant Xiao Long Bao available only for the month of November and I was very excited to try it. It looked great when it arrived. The broth had a very strong shittake mushroom presence which I'm not the biggest fan of but it was okay. Once the soup was completely sipped out, I pulled apart the dumpling to discover tiny amounts of filling consisting of corn, shittake mushrooms and...raw pork. This was a major disappointment. Considering the filling and taste of the giant xiao long bao, I would not recommend purchasing one. Just get yourself 4 of the normal ones - they're so much better.
Anna
First time going to Din Tai Fung and wondering why I didn’t go sooner. There were a couple of people waiting even before they open at 5pm, and the place was buzzing and filling in quick as soon as we were allowed in. Food as a whole was tasty, except as I’m sure everyone is aware, the price does let it down a little.

I actually thought the sides were the standouts, you really must try the Din Tai Fung Vegetarian delight and Water spinach with garlic! I know it sounds like your standard stuff and probably not as exciting as other dishes, but they were really delicious.

The vegetarian jiao zi were okay, I was just happy to have some dumplings to be honest, but wouldn’t say they were particularly amazing. Also got the mushroom and truffle oil fried rice and thought it was nice but could also be coz I enjoy that flavour. It might be too much if you are indifferent.

Service was super nice and efficient, really liked this aspect, so big plus there.
Innky
My rating is only 3.5 beacuse of their price. If you can get them to drop their price by half by cutting their deco and maybe location I'd give it a 5. Their dumplings are simply amazing.

The food here is fantastic but for customer service they score a solid 0.

I have enjoyed food at other outlets but I tried to book at this one and "they do not take booking while they are open" and as they do not answer phones before opening hours I will be taking my business elsewhere.
Magz
We made a booking for 12.30pm for 8 people and we arrived at 12.20pm. The lady at the counter acknowledged our booking and told us that they're setting up the table. By 12.40pm I asked her again about my table and she said I arrived late! I said ..I've only just spoken to you 20 minutes ago. She said well when you make a booking we don't reserve a table for you, we only give you the first ticket on the waiting list. I wish they told me that earlier! Another 10 min wait in, I walked into the restaurant and asked another staff to help me, and she kindly set up a table for us within minutes. By then it was 1pm.

Put the very poor front desk service aside, the rest of the experience was good. I particularly love the spicy prawn dumplings noodle! Their xiao long bao is very nice too (we had 3 different types of xiao long bao: traditional, crab meat, and the rainbow gem). I would still come back to try out more food if they can make the booking system better (either reserve a table for customer, or simply say you don't take reservation).
Debbie
What's good at Din Tai Fung Chatswood is food standard and cleanliness are consistent week in, week out. My favourites: vegetarian fried rice, xiao long bao (original ones, not coloured ones), hot and sour soup, spicy beef noodle soup.

What else works? Location - to free two hour Westfield parking, the toilets and shopping centre exits. Family friendly - they provide kids with colouring pencils and sheets, and their own set of cups/cutlery/bowl/plate.

What doesn't work? The service. It's inconsistent. Comparing the behaviour/service levels of the same wait staff each week, service is definitely moody i.e. It's good when they're chirpy, poor when someone's having a bad day. E.g. Eyeball rolls at your requests, or you can ask three people for the same thing because it has been unattended to for so long and still not get it. So pick your moment! ;)

At the end of the day i'm there to eat comfortably. And it delivers each week in this respect.
Princess_Porky
A very efficiently run place, with pretty good service levels. Location is fantastic, right in the heart of Westfield, with easy parking. Food wise, some hits, some misses. Overall, quite tasty and very consistent.
Lily
Amazing!Nice Delish..hoping to go back shortly , service was great and dumpling were the best . ............Yummy .. ....................

The new dumpling King in Chatswood. Offers the best soup dumplings and has a lot of other great items in the menu.

The serving size is a little on the smaller side but the quality is 10/10.

Nice clean venue. Staff are alright.
Isabelle
My partner and I are obsessed with Din Tai Fung! Definitely the best dumplings in Sydney and we've tried many other places. The staff are always so attentive, the wait for a table and food has never been unreasonable and everything is always fresh!
Alegna
Love the delicate, refined flavours of all their dishes. Taste can be rich but never greasy. Their serving sizes are on the smaller side (compared to similar restaurants eg New Shanghai), so order accordingly.
Weekendfoodescapes
I am a massive fan of Din Tai Fung and I was hoping they would open more restaurants rather than the little kiosks that seem to be popping up in food courts. Din Tai Fung is now open in Chatswood Westfield in an impressive large space! There are large windows so you can see some of the dumpling action which is always enjoyable to watch.
Pollo_pesce_me
Careful of the large servings; I was with team of ten and we ordered average of 1.5 dishes per person and we couldn't finish all the food. The dumplings were nice but most had pork in them, my friends liked the porky ones but the non-pork ones were not very impressive. Noodles were fresh and broth tasted authentic.
Jules
Love the food - awesome xiaolongbao, silky noodles and lovely crispy chicken with rice. The waitstaff are generally friendly and helpful, which can be rare at Chinese restaurants! The only downside is the price of some of the dishes. $15 and up for a plate of vegies is a bit steep!
No Guilty Pleasures
Xiao Long Bao and Tofu with pork floss were nice. However, other dishes were ordinary. The place was always noisy and service was average...
Kat King
Doesn't really live up to the hype. We arrived after the lunch rush which given its location shouldn't affect its service, unfortunately it did. Staff were uninterested and whilst the food came quickly it lacked the care factor. Everything was ok but not amazing.
Queenie K
Delicious Xiao Long Bao and fried rice with crumbed chicken fillet! Food has always been consistent, will definitely be back again! Tried one truffle XLB, it's alright but wouldn't order it again.
Bruce
Fantastic dumplings, no fuss, good flavours and combinations. Prawn and pork dumplings are must haves, and the park fillet with fried rice is excellent. Always get the chili sauce as well to add to taste....
Highly recommended when time poor but not wanting to compromise...

Good food.. must try specialy the green beans with minced pork. I really like it
Last time i came there on Saturday it's very busy time but they are service still really good. Food come faster than we imagine. I like they style. When we come they give us like a basket for our bag it's really cool. I never been in another restaurant service very cool like this. It's very recommended
Dave Reviews
Had a delicious dinner here! The xiao long bao is really good - soft, tender and juicy. The chilli wontons were a definite hit! Even the vegetables like fried water spinach and green beans were done really well! The service wasn't too bad either for an Asian restaurant - they even gave us a basket to put our bags in!
Jackyshi.1988
Very good experience for my family , The food there is very delicious , my kids really like fried rice there , the service there is fast and snappy, hospitality ,waites are always around to cater for our need .. We will back for sure !!

I swear, I turn my back for one second, and Chatswood suddenly becomes a massive foodie hub, with specialty gelato, dessert cafes, Michelin Star restaurant, and Chinese hotpot, just to name a few. I mean, I knew that there was more to it than night markets and Daiso, but it really didn’t hit me till we were looking for a satisfying dinner after treating ourselves to a movie.

Not quite as good as I remember but the ques remain

Make sure you plan your visit to avoid the lengthy waits

Did you know you can BYO?

Do: the XLB several times over. The crumbed chicken and pork cutlet. The truffle dumpling. The rice and beef was quite good too.

Don't: over do it on the noodles or rice. The hero is the XLB. Save room for the dumplings.

Tip: pick up XLB and place on spoon. Nibble and sip juice. Then dip into soy and vinegar then eat.

First timer and I was impressed. Tasty food, great staff and location lends itself to the type of food service. Will definitely return. I think with a larger group.
North Shore Nibbles
Great food, great service, buzzing busy vibe! Definitely on the expensive Side for Chinese food considering I can find many other dumpling houses at a fraction of the cost. Otherwise fairly decent all round!

Very nice food here. Customer service is fast and attentive. I like how all the sauces are already on the table and they give you a basket to place your handbag. The food is quite pricey so don't come here if your on a budget. I highly recommend the xiao long baos!

Saturday night dumpling cravings meant a visit to Din Tai Fung. The last time I went to the city one was so many years ago I don't even remember but I do remember the xiao long bao being the reason we were there so back here we went to get my fix. We got the crab meat and pork one and the limited black truffle and pork one. Personally I couldn't taste the truffle, and was quite happy with just the crab meat one. It has the thin skin (that doesn't break when you go to pick it up!) soupy goodness inside with the perfect size of filling. I wouldn't pay the extra $ to get the truffle one again.. nor did we get the colourful gem ones (wasn't sold on the 'gem' concept with natural dyes and the different fillings didn't appeal to me). Go Din Tai Fung for getting creative but nothing beats the original.

Three words.
Truffle. Pork. Dumplings.
I die!! They are a more expensive $4.80 per dumpling but oh so delicious. Definitely my favourite. Shrimp and pork wontons are delicious both in soup and with the spicy dry noodles. Good service. I love how they give you a holder for your bag and cover it for you.

On the pricey side in terms of dumplings but the service is great and the wait is never too bad.

The steamed pork buns are an obvious favourite but the truffle steamed pork bun is the best I could eat it all day!
A Potentially Loyal Customer
My wife and I arrived at 8:15pm, they close at 9pm. We ordered quickly. Food came fast, and we ate it fast. The staff were in such a rush to get out of there, that they went around to the 6 or so tables and made us pay for our meal at 8:35pm!!!!! I have never ever been interrupted mid bite to be told to pay before I have finished chewing my meal. They don't know the meaning of hospitality. Yes they are efficient and the food is good, but people go back to restaurants and give good word of mouth when you feel that you are welcomed. This kind of experience is un-Australian. We left at 8:50pm. I hope that the precious staff left at 9pm on the dot, we accommodated them! Where's my tip?

Shrimp and wonton soup here the best is adding a bit of vinegar in your spoon...makes for the perfect bit

And Kung Pow Chicken...never had you before but you and my belly will meet again plenty more times now. The flavour is amazing!! And the cashews on the side are the perfect touch. This is my next #musthave for the season

The food is always of exceptional quality and service is top. My favourite dumpling place in Sydney. The pork dumplings always have a broth inside them, but the spicy wontons have a complex spicy sauce that always keeps me going back for more

Very disappointed and extremely underwhelming! We went wanting to get our dumpling fix and the food was really sub par. Although you can't beat the original in Taiwan, it even pales in comparison to other dumpling eateries. Service was absolutely shocking, with the waitresses bringing us the wrong dishes 4 times, continually mixing our orders up with those of the table next to us. The only positive was the hot and sour soup which was nice on a cold day, but even that wasn't thoroughly heated through with parts of it being cold. Unfortunately, it's trained DTF name in my book. Sorry but I'll get my dumplings elsewhere thanks!
It's CAKe Time
The Top Line: DTF is an institution, and specialise in the xiao long bao. So I would only ever go there to eat xiao long bao, which is basically the only thing worth trying there!

The Review: After visiting DTF for the fourth time (twice in Taiwan and once in World Square) it just hit me like a smack in the face – This was a Taiwanese dumpling store..! Which made it different to a Shanghainese one – such as Taste of Shanghai or Shanghai Nights. In addition, because it is an upper scale restaurant, it has a reason to keep its menu so narrow. And that is how I failed to find those pan-fried pork buns on the menu, or the chilli chicken appetiser dish. But DTF has its own perks! Like their strange little dumpling gems and dessert taro xiao long bao.

The best dumplings in Sydney!!! While living in Sydney for three months & discovering this establishment, we became regulars. Xiao Long Bao were the best I have ever had. Rice with shredded beef I was addicted to, as well as my 1 year old, who was a fussy eater. The prawn & pineapple was amazzzing! Prawn & Mango Crepe too die for! Was so excited when Din Tai Fung opened in Melbourne & will definitely visit real soon.

Very nicely prepared dim sums and dumplings, much better than most places in Brisbane. If you're into these style of chinese foods then this is a place you cannot miss when visiting Sydney. Din Tai Fung has a few outlets and I believe every outlet is very consistent with their performance and quality control.

Disappointed... Maybe it was their early weeks of opening. Disorganised, food was slow, staff had no idea what they're doing. On top of that the most important food was very average!
Singapore Din Tai Fung was pretty good but not this one.

Worst Ding Tai Fung - bad food. I've been to branches of this restaurant including Taipei and Hong Kong. I've eaten at the Sydney city branch many times as well as the one near the Lyrics. I've never been disappointed with their food until now - at Chatswood.

My friend and I were there last Monday. She's vegetarian so she ordered the vegetarian dumpling and some vegetables as well as the vegetarian fried rice. I had the famous xiao lung bao and was I disappointed!! Flat discs of about 1cm high with brown sauce you can see puddling inside - my guess is they were frozen or were steamed for too long.

The other dish that was disgusting was the vegetarian fried rice. It was greasy, actually dripping with oil, and the rice was hard. Anyone can do a better job than that. I didn't complain because my friend had invited me there but I would never go back there again.

Posted on January 11, 2015 by Joel Din Tai Fung dumpling masters make their signature dishes with scientific precision Tweet Chatswood is an altar to the food it so deliciously encompasses, blending Asian flavours with its newly emerging café culture. Here we look at Din Tai Fung. Din Tai Fung is a world-renowned dumpling restaurant. Kind of like the more sophisticated and better dressed Eastern cousin of McDonalds. With a name that translates to “small eats” it ensures it delivers with elegantly proportioned works that dance tenderly with the senses. The place is not to be missed. “Din Tai Fung has a signature point of difference in that our dumplings are made with scientific precision. Every dumpling pastry is delicately handmade to measure between 4.8 and 5.2 grams at conception, with a 6 cm diameter before being stuffed and folded 18 times to weigh between 20.8 to 21.2 grams.” And you can watch it all happen before your eyes. A team of dumpling masters operate in clear view of diners with only a wall of glass separating them from the inquisitive gaze of young and old alike. The interior design is simple yet powerful and the infusion of green adds a balance and harmony that is reflective of the dumpling art. Staff are efficient and friendly although their dead pan use of walkie-talkies incites a giggle. Crab Meat and Roe with Pork dumpling Growing up in the care of my Chinese grandmother I have had my fair share of dumplings and Din Tai Fung does not disappoint. ‘Crab Meat and Roe with Pork’ dumpling are particularly delicious and one piece of the ‘Crumbed Chicken Fillet, Taiwanese Specialty’ will leave even the most dubious of chicken fans wanting more. The drinks menu is quite exciting with the fresh juice arriving in traditional milk shake glasses and providing a beautiful contrast to the savoury flavours. When eating at dumpling restaurants it is best to order a variety of dishes and eat small portions of everything so a more holistic experience is enjoyed.

Updated April 2017

Consistently quality since 2015.
Steamed and pan fried dumplings have been of consistently good standard in the 4-6 visits since that time.

They have BYO but the price is high, almost $10pp from memory.

Reviewed 2015.

Good quality dumplings. Both times the quality of the dumplings have been consistent and quite good. Desserts okay.

Small queue around 7pm for dinner seating.

I went to Din Tai Fung in Chatswood (Sydney) with my parents. I’ve been looking forward to it since I absolutely loved it when I was in Taiwan. Originally the store in Chatswood was meant to open in March but got pushed back to April. Here are some of the photos I took tonight and my thoughts about the place.
The Weekend Foodie
Out of impulse, we decided to head to Din Tai Fung for dinner on a rainy night. We got there at about 5-5:30PM, there was a micro queue but we managed to get a seat for two right away. We were warmly greeted as we walked in and the food arrived promptly upon our orders were put in.

Din Tai Fung’s is an exception, actually it’s exceptional! A perfect pork dumpling (I stabbed it with a chopstick so you can see the yummy broth pouring out) juicy and yummy! I’ve been a long time advocate of the CBD, World Square Din Thai Fung purely for the meticulous little morsels of pork in tasty yummy broth all encased in a soft and light little steamed dumpling. Rated the best dumplings in the world by one top chef and certainly by me too! Din Tai Fung Chatswood, right in the Westfield shopping centre, is a winner and the queues are proof. When you arrive book in, pick up your buzzer and take a look in the stores or pick up a coffee at the cafe next door because the wait for a table at this super popular spot is 20 to 30 minutes during a common meal time slot. We arrived at 12.30 and waited 30 minutes. The Din Thai Fung Triple Mango Fantasy! A tall

Don't be put off by the (relatively) poor Urbanspoon rating, I was almost in tears for the most part of this dinner because the food was so good.

Din Tai Fung is renowned and still to this day, despite all the competition, holds the name of Sydney's best dumplings. I will tell you in my opinion, why these dumplings are the real deal! What I LOVE about these dumplings is the fact that they are a little on the thicker side, they have a gloss-like silky finish and do not break when you attempt to eat them. The flavour literally punches you in the taste buds (in a good way). What was my first opinion walking into Din Tai Fung Chatswood? This place is MASSIVE! The vibe is great- it's completely buzzing (even at 3pm). The staff are attentive and extremely friendly. I was actually really surprised at how good the service was. They even gave my friend B this bag holder (we got a little excited over it). Looking at the menu the Black truffles pork dumpling

The food, I am more than happy to say, was very consistent with the quality that I have experienced in the other Din Tai Fung branches.

Din Tai Fung is really the undisputed king of well-made xiao long bao with absolute precision in the thickness of the skin and the tastiness of the soup. They’ve turned an art into a science. They are on the pricier side though, and if you were to feed a family of four here at Din Tai Fung, you might find yourself walking away with a bill of $100, instead of an equivalent meal costing you only $75 at New S

Can't really see what all the fuss is about, and there seems to be some quirks re: ordering method etc, not to mention $10 corkage which is laughable really.
Not in a hurry to return but it wasn't really awful either.

It's been a while since the last time I wrote a review but this restaurant deserves it! The food was amazing!!! Super tasty and fresh! We ordered different dishes to share (4 adults) and every single one was soooo yummy!! We will definitely return to try more from the menu!
The dishes of the night for us: mango prawns as an entry and spicy (and I don't usually like spicy food) pork and vegetable wonton noodles!!

Also, I want to mention that the food arrived on time, the staff was friendly and we think is a good value for money.

Cheers!
