Best udon speciality place I've found so far in Sydney!
With extremely fast service at low prices, it serves busy people well! Not to mention whether you're peckish or starved all day, there's an udon size for you at M, L and XL serving sizes šā£
ā£
I should also mention that there's unlimited tempura and green onions you can add to your dish. This is a first in my experience, which I find enhances your value for money and tasting experience.ā£
Excellent environment, good price for the quality of food and very quick service
Really good udon with amazing texture; slightly firm with a good chew! Great pricing, definitely recommend this udon place!
This a lovely place for udon lovers in Chatswood, I personally like udon noodles very much, so this place did not disappoint me it was a very Lovely experience. The tempuras are also very good, I tried all of them veg and non veg, only the mix vegetarian tempura was not up to the mark, but others were amazing, even the non veg tempuras were very nice, the crab stick was the best. Definitely should try the red beans fish shape tempura, it sweet and tasty.
Great udon, cheap prices. So good to see a place specializing in udon! Very authentic, just like the places found in Japan. The egg bukkake is š the bowl was bigger than what I expected.
I recently got back from my 4th trip to Japan and had some amazing Udon. There are a couple of Udon places in Sydney that come very close to the taste of authentic Japanese Udon, and I think Murakame is one of them. The noodles were cooked well and the broth tasty. I had the Ontama Bukkake Udon with sides of Kara-age Chicken and fish stick. Both were very tasty, but they would've been slightly better if the temperature was a little bit hotter. For the price though, Murakame is excellent. I'll be stopping in a lot more on my work lunch breaks!
Super good, Super cheap, worth the hype - They never disappoint! The walk from the station is worth it when you receive that nice bowl and r greeted with friendly staff
Ordered wagyu udon with an extra of fried crab stick and Iām very satisfied with the food. They have tasty soup and the udon is cooked very nicely as well (not too hard and not too soft). I asked for chilli but instead of giving chilli powder, they gave me a chilli dish (miscommunicationš) but i enjoyed it too and did not regret ordering it.

Been going here for years. Never disappoints, it is a fairly priced, fast and satisfying meal. There's so many options, if you're not very hungry you can get a bowl of Udon for around $5 or if you are extra hungry, you can get an extra large bowl. I've tried many different types but I gravitelate towards the Wagyu beef and egg Udon or the wagyu beef curry Udon (normally I order a medium). There are so many sides and topping you can get and I usually get the croquet. I love the authentic experience of ordering, receiving the meal and going down the line. Toppings and water are self service and I find it more convenient to put the crispy toppings in a cup so that it doesn't get soggy right away (pro tip). I've been here in large groups, smaller groups and by myself and haven't had problems finding seats, you definitely have to go upstairs if you are with more people though. Love this place and I will keep going back :)
The quality has not changed over the years and food is still cheap and delicious.
Got cold udon today as it was hot. Their noodles are chewy and freshly cooked. The broth is flavourful and clings to the noodles very well.
There are a few tempura choices and it makes up an affordable but delicious meal.
A friend recommended this place to us and we went to check it out and found the food delicious and simplistic. The place also provides good service and is convenient. Now we often return for these cheap under $10 menus.
I loveeee the food! Would surely come here again. Courteous staff, very hygienic and I like the way we can order our food by picking the stuff ourselves.
The atmosphere is really nice here and you don't feel rushed at all. The food is also really good. Some of the best Udon Ive had in Sydney!!
I tried the smallest bowl available of the udon dan-dan and some of the sides and couldn't finish my meal... Maybe I have a small appetite! While the delicious dan-dan (some may find it spicy) left me wanting for more, the sides were a bit oily for our liking, but good none the less. This place is worth a try and pretty reasonable on the pocket as well.
Cheap - Fast - Good and Fun experience. It is mainly self service. The udon broth is so good that I wish they gave me more. The beef is not the 5 star wagyu beef but it cooks well and tastes good. Tempura choices are vary. I love everything about this place. Remind me of authentic japanese restaurants.
Nice simplistic food yet affordable and delicious, a good casual place to hang out with your friends. Service was okay and ambiance was nice, the window view gives nice natural lighting.
Love this place! The udon is delicious and cheap, I usually order a simple bukkake udon (soy broth with soft boiled egg) and get a fried fish cake on the side. Sometimes the fish cake is not crispy if the shop is quiet. Would recommend for a quick cheap meal!
Marukame Udon probably has the largest portions and the quickest serving time of any udon in chatswood. Personally, I like adding a generous serving of everything they provide on the seasoning table. The Wagyu Beef and Egg udon comes with their classic Kake broth. I had never ordered their Tonkotsus before today, where I ordered the Spicy Dandan Tonkotsu and was not very impressed by the broth and it lacked more protein than the egg. However, it was still decently enjoyable for the price.
Having just visited Japan, I loved how much this restaurant replicates the udon take-away style restaurants you find in Japan's major cities and it took me right back! I had the wagyu beef udon with a tempura eggplant and I loved it! The portions are great for the price and I can't complain with the taste at all. I loved the toppings station as this made it identical to japan. Service was really great as well, nice and quick with clean table areas. Definitely will be back next time I am wanting some Udon!
A place I often go to for their tasty udon and affordable prices. The proportions you get for what you pay is definitely worth. Staff is polite and service is quick. Thereās a second level so seating is largely available.
Would really recommend to everyone to try not just their udon but various rice bowls and dishes.
Here's my confession. I never really liked udon until I came to Japan. Before then, it was just kind of thick plasticky strands. Ever since I came back from Japan I've been an udon junkie, craving that fluffy but slightly aldente texture that changed my whole way of looking at udon. I had the wagyu kake udon here (had heard that some of the broths here are slightly salty so this was the one recommended as less salty by the staff). It was good; although the noodles were not as soft and gnocchi-like as the ones I had in Japan, they came close. The centre was aldente and the coating of the noodle was just that little bit rugged and fluffy. In this way the noodle wasn't heavy and gobstopping (like packet udon are, yuk). The broth was just right, not too salty as I had feared, and was full of warm beefy flavour. I wish they had a bigger selection of tempura (I would have loved a pumpkin/sweet potato tempura, but settled for eggplant). I also wish the tempura sauce was a bit lighter and sweeter; it was more strongly dashi-tasting (though after sipping at it for a while I think I could get used to it :D). They have plenty of onions and tempura batter for you to top on at your will. And toasted sesame seeds!! The service was friendly and efficient too. Can't wait to try their kamaage udon and karee udon.... Gochisousama deshita, Marukame!Ā I will be back :D
This place is probably one of my favourite restaurants in Sydney. The udon is delicious and you can literally taste the freshness of the noodles.
Pricing is around $10 and portion sizes are huge. Interior decor is very authentic.
š Wagyu Beef curry Udon is so good~ I know it is better to explore other dishes on the menu but every time I just stick to Curry Udon because is so good~
Used to come here quite often because their udons are nice. Quick service, friendly staff and somewhat fresh food. I think it's worth the price, and wouldn't mind going again!
Food: 8/10
Service: 7/10
Price: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10
We ordered the Wagyu Beef Udon and the Pork Katsu Curry and both meals were great tasting. Great portions for the price and nice range of sides if you want some extra. The service varies from time to time but for the most part it's good.
The service delivery is different but isn't difficult to pick up on. You grab a tray and order and pay at the end where they note what you have on your tray.
Great for casual dining, easily suitable for singles or groups.
Simple, fresh , delicious homemade udon that can be upgraded with other things like flavored egg, poached egg, meat, tempura etc. good price and quality. Will be back for sure
This is a canteen style restaurant where you order the food and pay at the entrance before choosing your table. I have been here many times and it never disappoints. The udon noodles are made freshly made giving a great chewy texture. The broth used in the udon dishes is flavoured very well and always complements the noodles. In addition, there are unlimited extra condiments to suit your tastes. My recommendation is the dandan noodles with extra green onion and ginger.
The service is very quick (cafeteria style)
quite a variety of different udon, curry and main dishes available.
All udon is handmade and the udon is a great chewy consistency
the broth can be a tad salty for some
The side dishes a great including tempura
all dishes are great value for money.
Great for lunch, but note can be crowded on the weekend.
Cheap, fast and convenient. As you would expect from a Japanese food outlet. Decent size of udon with plenty of choice for toppings - tempura, chicken, pork, beef or ontama. Handmade udon which is a big plus, will come back again.
Great value for the best hand made fresh udon. We get our lunch from here all the time. Fast service and delicious soup and udon noodles. You can sit in or take away and they serve some tasty fried side dishes. The udon noodles are all fresh and hand made, and there is a variety of soup options to choose from.
I used to love this place a year or two years ago, until they open an array of asian restaurants in hawker lane (in chatswood). I always order #11 the wagyu beef with soft-boiled egg, with udon noodles in a tasty broth hot soup. Great food, with an affordable price. It could get busy during winter but their service is really quick, so no complaints.
A nice quiet udon place, warm colour and warm service. Limited choices but they make good tasty food. My son likes their Gyu don(beef don), I like the beef Udon.
Great flavours, good service and value for money.
The insight into the workings of the kitchen and the preparation and execution of your meal, adds a personal touch to the experience.
Must visit.
A superb little udon joint hidden away on Victoria Ave. Reasonably priced menu, predominantly udon-based but with a number of other Japanese treats sneaking their way in. Would definitely recommend this place for a warming lunch on a cold Sydney day!
I love this place. Quick, cheap and tasty.
Medium kamaage udon is my choice all the time. The dipping sauce is too strong to me, so I normally put a few spoon of hot water from the udon bowl to the soup bowl to make it thinner.
It's really simple dish but you can make your own twist with spring onion, tenkasu(fried tempura batter) and grated ginger.
Udon noodle is sweet and great texture, and quite filling. Medium kamaage will be just enough amount for me, with side dishes become perfect dinner.
I normally pay $5 to 9, depending on udon only or with one or two tempura.
Salmon don was tasty but very pricy for the small bowl I recon.
Location:
In the hustle and bustle of Chatswood, while being a walkable distance away from the station, made it a prime place to eat after a hard day of shopping! :) p.s. There are two levels in the restaurant however not many people go upstairs!
Service:
Staff will always give us a cheeky grin since my boyfriend and I always shared a extra large kamaage udon and they will always without fail give us two bowls of dipping sauce and an extra bowl to share. A few times we went staff would also come up and take our trays away without us even asking! :))
Food:
Extra large kamaage udon $6.30
Vegetable tempura $2
Udon was made fresh and cooked at our order. Vegetable tempura was pre made however still crunchy when we ate it. Dipping sauce was a wonderful contrast to the plain udon and brought some saltiness to the dish. Complimentary shallots and fried tempura bits was also in unlimited supply! P.s. Use the plastic cups to store them so you can heaps and heaps :)
Conclusion:
Marukame Udon is a very good place to eat with fresh food and is very good value for your money! Food is also prepared very fast and on demand which is quite reminiscent of Japanese restaurants
Need a quick and cheap meal that is both filling and delicious? Then look no further. Similar style to Menya Mappen in the city, this place is a fast serve Japanese restaurant that specialises in udon dishes. All the choices come with medium or large servings, and with a good range of side dishes like croquets, tempura and other fried foods.
The udons are prepared super quickly, and I generally pay less than $10 for a rather satisfying meal, which is bargain in my books. Definitely come here if you're feeling the urge for udon.
A place to go for a fast quick meal esp on Thursday nights. Good choices available. Menu expanded to include rice now. Add the fried crunchy selection you choose.
Drawn in by the food theatre on display in the street front window, we decided to check out the food on offer. After ordering our noodles (Tonkotsu and Spicy Dandan) we then proceeded to pile our plates with a selection of vegetable tempura, eggplant and pork cutlet.
This self-service restaurant offers easy dining and yummy food.
- soo nice
- slightly expensive when you add ingredients/sides Ā
- customer service 7/10; not much interaction but that's the style and culture of the restaurant!!
- might be a lil salty
- floors could do with mopping
- canteen styled restaurant - choose what you want
Would eat there again for sure! :)
The best udon restaurant in town! So tasty, affordable, fast, and service is awesome. These guys are so efficient. Simple surroundings. Great for lunch
Food Is Really Great
+4.5
Best tonkotsu!! The tonkotsu soup really tastes like pork and works well with the udon! There are quite a few additional toppings to choose from as well (including complimentary condiments at the end), the curry croquette is so good. Ordering was a little unclear, you're supposed to pick up the main bowl before proceeding to the toppings and payment section (oops). But overall, it's a simple mostly-self-serve process. Yes I would return if in the area and looking for something quick and affordableš
Tried this place a week after having it in Tokyo. Omg the noodle disappointments. The Udon was overcooked and squishy. The soup base was lovely though, and the additional sides were all done nicely. Hopefully the noodle issue was just a once off and I look forward to trying it again in the future.
I've definitely fallen in love with this place, especially during this cold rainy weather! The layout and ordering system kind of reminds me of an American school cafeteria, which made my whole experience even more exciting.
The menu is cheap and simple, but packed full of flavour.
I have been a regular at Marukame for over 2 years and have always been happy with the food and service. I usually have the beef or curry beef udon. It is well priced and perfect for a quick udon fix.
There's nothing like it: soft but springy, never overcooked but always a moreish al dente. This is where I go for my quick and causal noodle fix. My favourite is the tonkatsu udon, which has soy braised pork, gatherings of Asian greens and cloud ear fungus with a rich soup base. But the handmade noodles are definitely what brings me back every time.
No fuss, easy eating. You line up, make your choice, add any extras if you would like, and pay at the end. I suppose I had high hopes as there is a similar place in the city that is quite good, and while Marukame is not bad, it didn't meet my expectations. But then again it's not fair to draw comparisons when it's its own name and place.
Had the bukkake and tonkotsu udons, with some extras on the side. There is no denying how affordable it is, and is probably the key factor that will draw me back again. Bukkake was a little too salty/flavourful for me, with undercooked noodles (I usually prefer my noodles undercooked but this was too chewy), but the extras were a nice touch. Tonkotsu broth was nice but something I would prefer with ramen noodles. Overall, a great place if you're after some quick cheap eats but want something different from the standard fast food chains, i.e. McDonalds, KFC etc.
Always like this place, clean and staffs are polite. I like their style, order, get ur food, chose ur sides dish. Had kamaage, add sesame and shallot in dipping sauce. But the dipping sauce is too salty.
I'm not a udon person as i find chewing floury doughy not very appealing so I don't frequent this place much....
By chance my friend chose this place for late lunch so I was looking at the menu for 5min to try to find something I can have......
Anyway i ordered the plain Bukkake udon with Onsen egg.... luckily at the condiment table i found the chili oil and the big bowl of tempura crumbs..... yummmmmm... I actually don't mind the udon with this combo as my mind was distracted from just chewing the noodle with those crunchy tempura.... the soup/sauce is quite light, not salty but just right...
I've added a curry croque, tempura fishball stick and vegetable tempura.... all are quite nice...... must say the oil they used is really fresh which made all the agemono tasted light and crisp.... well done
Hoping they would open a branch in Melbourne cos we loved the udon here. Very clean taste. And we love how they have a pick-your-own tempura bar. šš¼šš¼
Devilishly simple, yet so moreish. Take a break from ramen overload and down a bowl of white udon noodles. They're made in the shop and have extra spring thanks to the process of dipped briefly in cold water. The broth is simple and yet intense, lingering in the mouth longer than you'd think. Ask for runny egg and add tempura to taste along the school canteen path to the check out. The veg tempura is a satisfying chunk.
It cant get any better than this! Udom that is Hand made and cooked right infront of you. I had the beef and egg cold udon and it was delicious! I genuinely love this place. It is cheap and very filling. I personally think it is worth the money.
Authentic Japanese udon. Enough said. It's yummy, filling and cheap. Add some tempura, you will be tempted and the cost goes up quite a bit. But still a great meal for a great price. Perfect for the cold evening.
We all have our own vices, this is kinda, noodlies, Sydney food blogās second coming out, err.. of sorts. Wonāt you come along for the ride?. āI ate a bowl of udon and I liked itā is my own Katy Perry confession. When the whole world seems to be in a long, hard lust for ramen, this guy, this guyās in love with you, udon.
Best budget noodle in Northern Sydney. The quality, service and flavor are consistently good. the only problem is the soft boiled egg is too cold.
Average. As you line up and look at the menu, you wonder why the pricing is so decent...upon walking in, you get greeted loudly from the staff like most Japanese restaurants.
When I got the end and had the food on my tray, I realised why the price was decent. There wasn't much meat at all in my dish. Found a seat easily and started chowing down on my food. The udon was great. Not too chewy and definitely not overcooked at all. Definitely recommend this place if you're an avid udon fan but other than that, there's nothing much else on the menu to choose from.
Ordering the bukkake udon with soft boiled egg and beef , the medium was well and truly enough. The soup was incredibly tasty and delicious, udon firm and just the perfect portion size. I would probably suggest to not completely overload your noodles with...
This new udon and tempura joint boasts some excellent udon at modest prices.
I tend to prefer ramen to udon because of the egg noodles and richer, thicker soup. The tonkotsu udon I selected was thus a pleasant surprise. The toppings were those that you would expect to accompany ramen (such as bamboo and boiled egg), and the soup was a lovely pork-bone broth. As much as it would scandalise the udon-lovers, I was ecstatic to find that I was pretty much eating ramen with udon noodles :D
The awesome dish featured above is the Ontama Bukkake Udon -Ā a simple yet filling dish, one that makes me feel relatively healthy and is a classic. I particularly love this when itās served cold with the half boiledĀ eggĀ mixedĀ into theĀ udon.Ā The noodles served here are the proper flour noodles and not the cheap type you get from instant noodle packs which have a plastic-like texture. Curry Udon During our travels to Japan we visited Sapporo up in the snow capped north of Japan.Ā I will never forgot the amazing curry udonĀ there which is one of the regions signature dishes, I find myself ordering this dish quite often in Sydney with hopes that I will discover one
Unpretentious and great food. Simple delicious noodles, great value.
Great place for a cheap lunch!. Great Udon noodles! Generally order the Kamatama or Spicy Tonkotsu. The tempura tends to be cold and a tad underwhelming, I just get the deep fried vegetables, which are nice at any temperature.
