Review Houlihan's - Chatswood

Wonderful friendly service from the girls behind the counter. Great Campos coffee served here and quality treats and breakfast menu.

Had good experiences before today. Had to wait half an hour to get a Big Breakfast. Got it after reminding the staff twice. The excuse given was that one of the staff members served our order at another table. Cancelled the order and got a refund at the end as I was no longer hungry and ran out of patience.

Was ok. Coffee came out after we ordered but the food took so long that we had finished our coffees and were waiting for the food. As you can see from the photos, we didn’t order anything particularly complex and the restaurant wasn’t very busy. Underwhelmed to be honest. Food and coffee itself was decent, but service was definitely lacking.

I ordered an iced latte and southern chicken style waffles. Well glad there was no sugar in my coffee because for a savoury style waffle meal it was drenching on maple syrup. I had to ask for a second plate because syrup was in everything even the fruits. I only enjoyed the coffee only coz it was just cleaning all the sugar left in my mouth. Great presentation sadly it took the flavour of the food away. Great customer service sadly the food did not give extra points.

Lovely desserts, had crème brulée and tiramisu, big servings too - couldn't finish mine!

The Gâteau Basque was richly flavoured and textured, and rightly-sized serving. An exquisite experience. The Campos Coffee flat white was perfect with fine delicate coffee art as a bonus.

A great option for a peaceful context conducive to meaningful conversations in the heart of the Chatswood metropolis. Interesting array of lighting however prices are on the expensive side. Hot chocolate is pictured, very tasty.

Worst açai bowl ever, very watery. Bread is dry and coffee is watery too. This place use to be good and had the best coffee in chatswood but the quality of food seems degraded big time Ordered large coffee and got medium portion. It was filled to 70% full for both our large latte. The Coffee is not good as well.

Mushroom Benedict was very good! Though the hash brown was very poorly made... coffee was good, which helped too.

Open on a public holiday which was nice, but not too keen on the surcharge, think it was 10% and considering they were so busy, I don’t think it would’ve been justified.

They forgot my order at first, which was fine. But even after reminding the waitress, they didn't start making my order instead keep me waiting until they finish serving several people who ordered after me.
Good honest cafe food. My usual is scrambled eggs on sourdough toasts. The B.L.A.T. is also very good. Pancake is a nice option if you feel like sweet. I see many returning customers!

We were after a light breakfast and decided to try this place out. It was fairly busy when we arrived, but we didn't have to wait too long for our meals. The food was pretty good and the service was friendly.

On Friday morning I was completely appalled at the behaviour of the cook in Houlihan’s in Chatswood. I’d gone in ordered breakfast. As soon as I arrived I could see and hear the cook ranting, firstly about a customer’s egg order (“they can f—ing have their eggs however I f—ing make them”). He ranted at the poor wait staff about having the nerve to bring him orders (Stop taking f—ing orders! I’ve already got three tickets and I can’t be expected to keep up with this by myself!”). He ranted about things not about things not done or not being done properly, about the manager’s poor skills at shift allocation, about the wait staffs’ skills, he sent a pile of trays flying, all while swearing loudly across the restaurant. The last straw for me was when he came out of the kitchen to the glass cabinet. He had a set of tongs and yelled to the wait staff, “You two! Here! We can’t sell brownies in this f—ing state!” and then started to smash them up with the tongs. All this bullying of the staff was really too much for me and I slightly shook my head and starting gathering my things. The cook saw this and yelling out to me “If you don’t f—ing like it, then get out you f—ing little bitch!” Yes – for real! I got my things, wen to the counter and told the wait staff to cancel my order, not because of them but because of HIM, because he’s appalling and left. On my way out the door the cook yelled “Good riddance you bitch!”

We ordered a veggie plate and a Houlihans big plate. Food wasn’t that great, very basic, no taste, no seasoning. Coffee was ok.. Campos..I’m not a big fan, it’s very old school this is why the company is going burst. Service was terrible, when I asked for the bill I got a “Pay inside!”
We went there on the 1st of January which is a public holiday. Legally they have to display the percentage rate of the surcharge, which wasn’t.
I won’t come back.

Such a wonderful place! Not only was the food delicious, (and serving size was great value for money) but the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating for us. Really enjoyed the experience and will definitely be back asap :D

1- not kind and helpful hosts
2- too late bringing the meals
3- running out of their menu stuff at 10 am for breakfast!
4- over cooked and burnt bread and tomato
5- tasteless breakfast
6- over price
A trusty oldie! Haven't been here in ages, last visited about 3-4 years ago, back then it was just trusty solid cafe offers, nothing flash, but consistent quality. Good to see they have moved with times, a refresh of the decor, a fresh menu, and most importantly the French Toast have upgraded too. Looking pretty with lots of colourful fresh fruit. Brioche based, syrup, ice cream & bacon. What more do you need!

It's not amazing. Not bad either. It's very basic in terms of the food they serve - a very Aussie menu. The coffee isn't particularly good either.

Used to come here quite a bit 4-5 yrs ago when chtswd was not confusingly overflowing with eateries. No bad memories before and rightly so when we re-visited them one early sunday morning. Happy to note that their menu hasnt changed that much, just simple food cooked and presented rather well. Though they were running at 90% cap, front line staff were unhurried but quick on their feet. We were shown to a table almost immediately and the table cleaned up not long after.

Spanish omelette 3.5/5
Salmon stack 3.25/5

A defo return.

We started to eat here every so often after our favourite Chatswood cafe spot (Fresh Taste) closed down. I have to say that the staff, service and food is all of top quality. The menu is really interesting and there's a lot of variety. I particularly love the bacon and egg brioche roll with BBQ sauce- it's absolutely delicious and has a great combo of flavours. The hot chocolate is always nice (as well as the coffee, I'm told), plus the desserts are scrumptious as well- we had one of the chocolate cake desserts and its was just lovely, nice and rich but not overpowering, and the staff made a cute smiley face with the chocolate fudge sauce on the plate which was a nice touch. The staff are always jovial and kind and make every effort to make your visit a pleasant one. This is definitely a great place to eat, sitting outside either in the summer or winter.

Had a pancake craving to satisfy and didn't want to travel too far so started googling cafes in Chatswood. Stumbled across a local favourite Houlihans and it's been a year or so since we have paid a visit so it was decided and that's not due to the fact it's bad but because I am not much of a breakfast person and the place is always busy so we are never to keen to wait.

Houlihans has always been a local institution and its equally busy for breakfast and lunch. Looking at the menu, I was reminded why. The cafe has what people want at sensible prices! Simple! Yes, you have to keep with the times and provide rarely cooked farm food to be "in" at the moment but at the end of the day, don't tell me that you will get snubbed when presented with a beautifully cooked big breakfast, Spanish omelette or Cesar Salad.

I am glad they are still busy while these pretentious cafes keep popping up in the area serving air and charging city prices. I was very tempted to put the craving on hold to take on the meat lover breakfast or the eggs benedict but decided to stick with my decision and glad I did.

The pancakes were soft and fluffy and the fruit compote and ice cream complemented it well. Perhaps some more chocolate and maple syrup would have highlighted the flavours a bit more.

The Poached Eggs Stack with bacon, rocket and balsamic reduction on sour dough was good and it was nice of waitress to suggest that we could swap some items if we didn't like it next time as she saw that my wife left the tomato on the plate. That's good customer service and in fact the staff were all friendly as was the owner at the end of the meal.

This place was a surprise. After a very unpromising start (being ignored for a long time, having to fetch our own menus, watching other people getting their orders taken who had arrived long after us) the food and coffee arrived, and it was good! Not ground breaking stuff but well executed and tasty. Tuna salad was really yummy. Smashed avo with corn got the thumbs up. $53 for 3 adults. Good enough for a return visit if I'm shopping over the north side again.

Soo good!

Great coffee and great food that won't burn a hole in your pocket.
Along with the lunch menu the breakfast menu is served all day everyday, and dishes all had a homie yet inventive twist to it.
Only area of improvement that I would suggest is the seating. Tables and chairs are placed in a way that you are awkwardly involved in the conversation with the table next to you. But that wasn't minded too much.
Probably the best place for breakfast in Chatswood

Nothing particularly wrong with this cafe just nothing outstanding either. There has been some friendly staff over the years that make it a pleasant visit even if average food and coffee.
Food Adventurer
Coffee is ok but food needs some improvement to reflect to what they priced it.
Confessions Of A Glutton
The Campos coffee was smooth, rich and deliciously creamy. It was a pretty darn good coffee. My friend went with an Iced Coffee ($5.00), and I couldn’t resist taking a photo of him with it, as he looked so good with it I wouldn’t be surprised if he could sell it!

Have you heard me whinge about the lack of a good café in my area? In particular, one which stays open past standard business hours? There are quite a few cafés in the shopping area of Chatswood but they're mostly located within one of the shopping compl
Big Appetite
Another "OK" Charswood cafe. There is nothing wrong with Houlihan's, and in fact it may be one of the better cafes / breakfast joints in Chatswood, but thats kinda the point... Chatswood is probably best known for shopping and dumplings, and the cafe scene there has few highlights and is underdeveloped. So whilst Houlihan's may be one of the better Chatswood breakfast joints, just make sure you go in with appropriate expectations... if you like the standard Big Breakfasts, poached eggs on rye etc, you will be happy. The more adventurous palette is better off heading east to nearby Manly for something more... refined.

Good coffee, terrible breakfast. Coffee above average, breakfast a disappointment. Hash browns dry and crumbly, stale sourdough toast, eggs limp and half-folded over on themselves, and no sausage. Bacon and egg roll just about edible.
Good restaurants are unlikely to be located in high footfall areas, where quality is not needed to bring the crowds in. So probably not a surprise.

Don't come here. This place used to be a great hangout but standards have really dropped over the last few months.

My egg whites came out raw yesterday and the European-accented waitress is a shocker - very rude and no concept of 'service'. You might be lucky to get a seat outside on a sunny day and a decent waitress, but I wouldn't take my chances. Not recommended. At all.

I always come here for the eggs Benedict

But the service is getting worse, i asked the waiter if i could have a latte with two sugars, and she told me, "the sugar is in the table, u can mix it urself"

Price is abit steep for the service u get here

The coffee here is ok, but i've tasted coffee as good in the shopping malls around the corner
Sk
Standard dropped. Used to have good coffee but have since increased price and coffee is dilute like water. Really bad!

Greeted by a waiter, seated & then proceeded to ignore us; no menu, no offer of coffee, service......we left

Food is average at best. Service is terrible.

Brilliant smooth coffee. Love the choice of breads. Nice outdoor eating spot in chatswood.

Great. Chatswood is starved of good mod oz options, so I'm grateful for Houlihans! Its a touch expensive, but they know coffee, food and service so its worth it.

Fave is definitely the all day breakfast - the brioche bun or the BLAT. Also enjoyed some cheesy quesadillas today with lovely sweet roasted peppers.
Pascha
Bad. Very bad. We ended up waiting for 35 mins and were told still 7-10mins yet to serve the order.

They offered free drinks when we were about to leave "without" having our food.

Not recommended. Horrible service.

Great place!. Recently went there for brunch with a friend. They provide all day breakfast as well as giving you the option to eat outside or inside. Quiet a small place but lovely place in the mornings. Staff were also very friendly!

Nice cafe with outdoor sitting!. Highly recommended, especially on a sunny day. Outdoor and indoor sittings available. Food was served on a timely manner, no delays. Price is average, good value for what you get :)
Amelia
Good Campos coffee
Eric
Food was not too bad, but service and the choc milkshake was a letdown (more like choc milk!)
EatingMusoe
Great coffee. I also had the French toast which was faultless.
ChefHib
Good big breakfast, although something could of been thrown in extra to suit the price. Also the beans seemed to be mircrowaved to order. Apart from that, a nice brekkky
Sophie
Very Good. Can't believe I have only just discovered this place! Best coffee, good food and good service even at peak trading. I will be going back.

Service beyond expectations. Came here with an old friend. Just for a catch up we got coffee and 2 burgers. The drinks came but they forgot our order! We were waiting for 30mins already. One of the waiters told us they would give us 50% discount for the meals to make up for it. The food ended up being lovely and totally worth the wait. Definitely coming back again.

Chill out. Quick Saturday morning catch-up with my bro at Houlians cafe which is rumoured to be the best in Chatswood. Consistently excellent long black double-shot from Campos beans. Milky, super milky hot choc ( Toby's all-time order) with beautiful rosetta. And yummmm coconut loaf with lemon sauce. The mild sweetness kept lingering on my tounge. I'm picky on decor though we got the best alfresco table. It may just be another indistinguishable coffee on the street until...'Wait! That's a very cute Italian-looking waiter. Shall we go in? '
Ms.Grass
Rumour has it this is the best cafe in Chatswood and i can confirmed part of it :). Consistently excellent long black double-shot from Campos beans. Milky, really milky hot choc with beautiful rosetta. Oh...try yummy coconut loaf with lemon sauce as well. The mild sweetness keeps lingering on my tounge. I'm picky about the decor though i got the best alfresco table. This may just be another indistinguishable coffee you pass-by on the street but...'wait! That's a very cute Italian-looking waiter. Let's go in'

Coffee was alright, was rather disappointed with the pancakes. Was expecting more than a handful of cut bananas with skin on.
Bianca
Decent coffee, very yummy breakfast, the holumi breakfast is delious
Renee Fowler-Tasker
Best coffe in Chatswood! Perhaps maybe on the North Shore!. Best coffee in Chastswood without a doubt. They take a lot of pride in this and always have a decent barista working who knows what they are doing.

Menu is much better since the rennovation and proper kitchen fit out. The benny gets top marks and the holumi bruschetta with rocket is nice for something lighter.

The staff have always been great to us. But we have been going there for years and the staff always make time for us as we are regulars. However I can understand the frustration in some of the other reviews i read... When this place gets busy (Saturday 11-1pm usually) service can drop in quality as staff get very rushed.

Food prices are pretty spot on for the value you get. May be on the higher priced side but at least you pay for what you get.

We will continue going back for coffee here, I think it could be best coffee on the northshore!
Bekee
Campos coffee and friendly baristas make it my first choice for coffee in Chatswood. But sometimes the table service leaves something to be desired, especially when busy. And on occasion beans are used to close to roasting giving a gassy, biting and unpleasant coffee. Nonetheless it's still my regular morning haunt.
Tim
Amazing coffee and friendly service.... If you're looking for great coffee in Chatswood, Houlihans has got the goods. They serve Cafe di Gabriel beans which create a smooth, velvety coffee with a consistent taste. You can either sit at tables in the street under the cafe umbrella or the coffee is also good to go. Hope you enjoy as much as I do.
