Review Sushi-ya Japanese Restaurant - Chatswood

If you feel like rice, order for this place. Never see anything like it. Mounds of rice to substitute filling. Very disappointing. Paid an extra $1 (no biggy) for avo for the kids roll that had cucumber in it. Never stated that it wasn’t an add, just a replacement for the cucumber. Totally unimpressed.

High quality Japanese cuisine literally tucked away and hidden in a corner old house of some block in the outskirts of Chatswood. Excellent, authentic and fresh quality and quantity of food. Diverse menu with very traditional options you can't find anywhere else. Would totally recommend to anyone who enjoys Japanese food, It's very hard to pass up.

Would have rated 3-4 star if I had received the entire meal that was described on the app, or if the price was lower. Ordered teriyaki salmon through the Uber Eats app. The dish was described as coming with miso, salad and rice, and was $17.50. The salad was standard. There was no rice at all and the “miso” was assumably a dry packet of miso, although I have no way of telling as there’s no English on the packaging or instructions. The teriyaki salmon was average. The amount of salmon the dish came with wasn’t much, although this is expected to some degree. It would have been fine if it came with miso and rice but without those it definitely felt lacking. I’ve had better but it was enjoyable. Most pieces were cooked well and the sauce was tasty. Not impressive but not bad either. Minor mix up when I came to collect the order but the staff seemed polite. Luckily I used a voucher to pay for most of this because otherwise I’d feel ripped off for $17.50!

Sushi-Ya has been a favourite and reliable 'go to' for over 15 years be it their Artarmon or Chatswood locations. I can honestly say that I haven't had a single dish here that wasn't first class. Always fresh and always prepared perfectly. Value for money is great.

Cheap but disappointing. - I had sushi and sashimi. Rice was too cold, too big and too firm/hard for sushi and rolls. The quality of ingredients is below average ( vs. Comparable cheap sushi trains / takeaway shops, to be fair for its price point). Fish was a bit stink and not that fresh. my partner gave up eating half way through. And just really curious that what have u done to Wasabi? It did not have and flavour or spice at all even when I had a spoon-full in my mouth. Not happy... or unhappy, more like. :(

We used to come here quite often when they opened more than a decade ago. They used to be better is all i can say. Heaps better. In all areas. Tempura udon 2.5/5, we dont mind if the broth came out of a bottle. But the quality of the tempuras were below par esp the prawns. Seriously ditch the old prawns. Unagi set 2.5/5, mushy eel does not a good unagi set make. Black cod 1/5, i cant be bothered to describe the atrociousness of this. Karaage set 2.75/5, the saviour of the night which is to damn with faint praise. The quality of the rice left a lot to be desired.

Our latest dining experience at Sushi Ya was not as good as before. The service was sloppy and abrupt. It was hard to get attention and the service was minimal. I guess it might be a busy night or not enough staff on duty.

Used to be our go-to place for a very long time during mid-late 2000s. Thought I came back for a sentimental visit recently but sorry we are disappointed. There are too many better choices available now and they have not kept up with standards. Will give it 3 star.

Just ordered the salted salmon belly which was really nice. Part of their new specials menu, it’s got a nice charred skin and smoky taste. Love it!

This place used to be so good - it used to be my go-to Japanese restaurant in Chatswood. While the service during my most recent was fine, the food was quite disappointing. The sashimi wasn’t fresh and extremely thinly sliced. The quality of the unagi wasn’t that great either.

It's been a little while since I've been here, a bit further down the road from the main Chatswood strip, so really not that convenient unless you actually lives in the vicinity. Surprised to see the recent reviews to be a bit average, my previous experiences had been positive. I stopped by for lunch on Sunday, it was quite with only a few other tables filled. The sashimi lunch set was not bad for under $20. Quality of the sashimi were good. Will return if in the vicinity.

I am looking for more awesome Japanese restaurants and decided to head to Chatswood to Sushi-Ya. Matt and I tend to eat dinner quite early so it was quite easy to get a table but Sushi-Ya gets quite busy by the time it's almost 6:30pm. Sushi-Ya is located just off the main strip of Chatswood Chase. As I enter, I notice the cosy interior and a number of reserved tables. There's quite an extensive menu but I am craving the familiar flavours from my favourite Japanese Restaurants in West Ryde. So I order what I normally order from Tatsuya or Moeru for comparison.

A small place with polite staff. Eel rice is yummy at $22 with no sides apart from a bag of instant miss soup. Only ordered takeaway at this brand cannot comment sushi or other food. sushi at the other branch is freshly made at order last time but didn't impress me much in taste. one thing worth to mention is toilet is very clean.

Didn’t look too busy when we sat, waited for about 10minutes till I managed to catch a waiter’s attention to order our food. Sitting here in the restaurant as I write this, its been about 40minutes since i ordered my food and it still hasn’t arrived. Let alone any cups or water for us to drink.<br/>I genuinely do not understand as to why this place does takeaway food as the restaurant is already unable to even serve food that hs been ordered 30minutes ago.<br/><br/>The food quality is okay but definitely not the wait.<br/>The place is also rather understaffed as there are only 3 waiters for over 20 tables.<br/><br/>Not recommended.<br/>

Very disappointing! <br/>Decided to take my parents here before their big tour of Japan. This Sushi-ya has lost it's way. We usually go to Artarmon, but had a good experience at the Chatswood restaurant in October 2017 so thought we would try again. Service was haphazard and slightly neglectful. Waiting for wine glasses, 10 minutes later asked for a bottle opener so we could open our own bottle and for some water and glasses to the table. Some of our entree arrived after the mains had been delivered to the table for half our group. The presentation was lackluster at best and sloppy at worst. Can't wait to hear how my parents first trip to Japan goes. They will surely have a superior experience to this. This will be our last time at Sushi-ya.

Sushi-ya has definitely changed over the years. Although prices are slightly expensive sometimes the food is mostly good enough to be worth that much. Came a here a little while ago the service could use some improvement. <br/>Wouldn’t really come back here for another time in the next year or so...

I don't know what happened to this place. It used be a very reliable Japanese feed but seems to have completely lost its way. I love Japanese food and have eaten a lot of soft shell crab and Sushi-ya's offering was without a doubt the worst I've ever had. The sashimi platter was solid at least and the Sapporo on tap was enjoyable, otherwise overall this was a poor experience. I will not be returning.

It's not the "Sushiya" anymore. Quite confident the owner has changed, particularly obvious when I saw my Salmon nigiri, half of the fish and the rice not even holds firmly compared to the Sushiya I knew.......<br/>My suggest is eat the hot food as there is not much issue but the dish (ginger pork set) looks more like Chinese stir fry now,um....... Should verify the Artamon one as well.

Just finished the dinner over there. It's really disappointing experience. They served the dishes with hair on top. And there were dirty on the dinner service as well. The waitress left the hotpot front of us and forgot their duty to take of the lid when it's done. All the soup come out from the pot, but we still didn't see any waitress coming for their duty. There are many passive waitress chatting over there, but no one care about the customers services and their basic duty.<br/><br/>For food, noting special. Worse than two years ago. I think they might change the chef and owner . <br/><br/>I can't see any Japanese face working over there. Now only Korean workers and one western waiter in that store to making "Japanese cuisine"<br/><br/>

From the moment we walked in there was a feeling of dread and we should have walked straight back out. <br/>Rude disinterested staff who slammed dishes on tables, talking loudly to each other behind the counter. The lady who was manning the sushi corner (?) stood there intently staring at customers as they ate - very uncomfortable. <br/>Salmon lover sushi roll came out 30 seconds after ordering. Sure the menu said it was a California roll topped with sashimi, but the slices and presentation was messy and downright embarrassing. Small, thin slices, 2 pieces down the end had brown avocado on the top and the rice was hard - felt like the roll was made hours ago. <br/>Sashimi tasted fishy which is a sign of fish that is not fresh. The tuna slice was mangled at one end and was something definitely not worth serving to customers. <br/>I wish we had cancelled our main immediately after this, but instead endured a main course with a watery miso soup. It tasted like they used half a miso soup packet - absolutely no flavour and was like warm. <br/>Overall a horrible first experience and will never return or recommend. Overpriced, under-delivered.

Went to Sushi-Ya for a small birthday party. Easy to make a booking but first error was when they recommended the upstairs rooms for a booking. The upstairs rooms are isolated from the downstairs tables and the staff never seem to frequent the upstairs rooms for service. There was another family in the room with us and both of us had to press the 'call' button many times before we got any service. The waiter came without a pad or paper and forgot all of our order and then had to get paper once again before they could remember the order. <br/><br/>The sashimi and scampi were fresh, takoyaki was full of flavour and the clam noodle soup and the beef and egg soup were tasty. Despite all of the problems from before, they still forgot to bring four of our orders - which we ended up cancelling as they took so long to bring it up.<br/><br/>The other table left and in the extra 1-1.5 hours that we were there, no body came to clear those tables at all. Getting the bill took another long duration of time before any service came at all<br/><br/>Food 4/5<br/>Service 1/5 - the downstairs tables appeared to be getting very good service though<br/>Ambience 2/5<br/>Total 2.5/5

Have not been for many months, but went recently in Feb 2016 and it has changed. Seems to be run by Chinese rather than Japanese as before and food and service is simply not first class as for many years?

Never go to this non Japanese owned place, quality gone down hill...can't even make a round sushi..came in triangle..square...rice was hard and grainy... service was lacking..typical Chinese service..or lack of

My first dinner of my staycation would be at Sushi-Ya. Sushi-Ya is a new favorite, simply for it’s fine balance between quality, price and service. Quality is top-notch, while prices aren’t dirt cheap, but not exorbitant either, and service is typical of most Japanese restaurants (run by Japanese) quick and cheerful.

I'm glad I ordered the teriyaki chicken because it's cooked to perfection! Crunchy on the outside with juicy, lean meat on the inside. It was absolutely yummy!

My family & I have been eating at Sushi-Ya for a number of years. This place has become one of our favourite Japanese restaurants to go to for a casual weekend dinner.

On a quiet Tuesday night, we decided to visit Sushi Ya at their Chatswood location for one of our high school catch up sessions. Sushi Ya provided the perfect location for our catch up since it served up delicious Japanese dishes at reasonable prices, in a very quiet location for Chatswood. As K had previously worked at the Artarmon location for Sushi Ya, we put her in charge of ordering the dishes, with strong recommendations from her for the beef tataki.

If you’re after some nice sushi for a casual lunch in Chatswood, I do recommend you try Sushi-Ya.

It was our weekly dinner catch up and my parents suggested Sushi-ya. They have heard wonderful things about this place from their friends, and my brother, F and sis-in-law, O have been a couple of times and really enjoyed it. Sushi-ya is located in Chatswood, just in the outer fringe of the shopping district on Victoria Avenue.

Sushi-Ya at Chatswood is a tried and tested place for group dinners with my friends as it takes table reservations. More often than not, as on this occasion, we end up with a private room upstairs due to our numbers. And although not famed for its sashimi

Delicious local haunt. We love sushi ya chatswood. It's our regular Friday night haunt. We have been to Japan several times and this food is fresh and authentic. We always order the tataki beef with special sauce and the salmon aburi. Absolutely delicious and reasonably priced.

Fav dish = beef tataki. the house sauce goes so well with it. sushi & sashimi is like your average japanese restaurant. service is good if u sit downstairs. upstairs, very difficult to get anyone. staff's helpful & polite.

Safe and dependable. This place is like a nice, hot cup of tea on a cold Winter's day. You know what you feel like, what you're going to get and how you'll feel afterwards. Sushi-Ya delivers exactly what it promises. Low key, safe and staple Japanese favourites are all featured on the menu. They are all done well. The salmon sashimi is cut perfectly into thickish slices and is also a generous portion. The sushi is rolled nicely and teriyaki chicken with rice flavorsome. It can get busy so get here early or late on a weekend to avoid having to wait.
