Review Star Capital Seafood Restaurant - Chatswood

Lovely yum cha location in Chatswood. Hits and misses with their services, on good days you've got endless dim sim trolloys going pass you, but bad days you will need to wait forever. However the dishes are always yummy.

One of the few dim sum places remaining in northern Sydney. We were sat in a room away from crowded common area. I was worried we won't get the dim sum carts coming by. The server assured me he would make sure we got all dishes we wanted, and we did! Good customer care. It was on the pricy side, but it seems to be the case for dim sum places.

Good yum cha restaurant in Chatswood. The service was superior to any other yum cha restaurant I had been to. Staff always checking in and clearing the table. Food was good also. Peking duck was great and the dim sum was fresh also.

❤️ Fave place for Dim Sum on Trolleys ❤️ . Food is on display for you to see and smell (additional dishes available on menu). The chinese tea quality and decor makes this our favourite please to wind down and enjoy the parade of dim sums. 🥠🥟🍡🫖

Look how beautiful this crackling pork is.. not too dry, not too dark, not too oily... leaves you wanting for more.. It seems to me, a roasting champ is working in their kitchen! But take note of their pricing, prepare for a $$$ meal.

Great place to go for Yum Cha. Large restaurant with big tables for multiple guests. Yum Cha comes round on trolleys and you’ll definitely need to make a booking if you go on the weekend as it gets really really busy - lineup out there door. You might also have to wave down the trolleys or servers some times due to how busy it gets. Ultra convenient location on Victoria Ave in the heart of Chatswood.

The food is okay, but way too expensive, didn't have alcohol, no fancy lobster or crab and ended up spending about $100 per person.

Used to have my favourite restaurant in Chatswood some 5 years ago. A lot of experienced staff had left. The boss is taking over to work as waiter but not to the same standard. Price is getting dearer but the size of serve is getting smaller. Extremely expensive. Quality of food is quite good though.
Deew2063
Food always delicious and service never disappoints, this is where we always go for yum Cha.
Wendy Ung
I only ordered two simple dishes the bill is $108 very over price, I think $60 is maximum, never never go back again;(
Namaste
The food is yummy but they charged $4 per cup of hot water. Very ridiculous for normal water ! Made no mention that water is not free as well when they were serving . very unhappy .

Went one night and it was super quiet, more staff than customers. The staff looked lazy and stood around us the whole night talking to each other and on their phones. Food was average and extremely overpriced for the tiny portions
Quality! It Shouldnt Be That Hard! Love A Wonderful Mouth Full Of Wholesome FOOD!
Over priced small servings, rushed service!! Read whole review save you’re money go els where!!!

I walked past this restaurant wanting to try it with a friend of mine but she was like no I want dumplings...

So my partner and I came here the following night it was a little late. 9.30pm there was not much open and I said I wanted to try this place not far from our hotel!

We walked in was created by a lovely waiter. they took us to a table and asked did we want any drinks I said just water for now please.

5 mins later a different guy came out he said. Do you know what you would like to eat we said 5 mins please. He said oh we have to hurry we need to close soon. He walked away. I looked at my partner and said should we find somewhere els it’s quiet expensive and I don’t want to be rushed. He replied no it’s ok. He said should we order one main they might be really big ones I said no let’s order two can always take away!....

So we decided to stay we ordered our food then it came out we ordered the entree first which was vegetarian dumpling and spring rolls.
The dumplings tasted good the spring rolls didn’t have much filling!

We ordered Szechuan Beef, and Satay Chicken
They both tasted nice how ever the size was so small and had far to many veggies for the price they charge it’s disgusting.

So half way through our meals they guy asked would me like any more food I looked and said no thank you! He then came and put down the bill right I front of my partner. Mean while we are both still eating!

I looked at my partner and said who the hell does that so rude! What happens if we wanted more drinks or even dessert?

We paid then left. I don’t want to pay almost 40 a main for a waiter to serve out the food. It is Chinese not fine dinning they should of had less then 20 staff and put more on the plates... come at your own risk I’ll never go back again! I left so angry they where vacuuming around us while we ate they didn’t care about our experience! Never going back again. Come at your own risk the rushed us out the door. They should of said to us before taking us to our seats that they where closing soon mean while I asked the waiter what time he was closing he said they kitchen 10:30 restaurant 11. It was 9:40 when he rushed us for our order!!!!

I recently caught up with my friend for a midweek brunch at Star Capital Seafood in Chatswood. Star Capital Seafood is on the main strip in Chatswood and as I arrived at 11:40pm, I was able to quickly get a table. By the time we left though, there was a small queue forming for yum cha. . Star Capital Seafood has a warm and inviting decore. We are quickly served up with tea and chilli. At first, there's not many trolleys at about 11:45am but we manage to order a few dumplings to start with. We start off with the Scallop dumplings. The scallop dumplings come in a portion of three and has a mixture of prawn and scallop dumplings. The dumplings are hot and the dumpling skin is a little dense but still enjoyable to eat.

Came here for the first time for a Saturday yumcha. I’d say it’s one of the better yumcha places in Sydney, and would visit again.

Good range of dim sims, served fresh and hot. Favourites were the ham sui gok and large sesame balls - the pastry was wonderfully chewy and crunchy. The pastry on the crystal skin dumplings however was disappointing - lacked the thin silkiness you’d normally expect.

Price was reasonable - we were given a 30% discount and it came to $54 for six dishes (including a $4pp tea charge). Dinner menu though is definitely more pricey (basic dishes $45+).

We ordered one congee and one fried noddle, and it took more than one hour to cook the food. Besides, this place is astonishingly pricey considering the quality and taste of food. I would not recommend this restaurant, there are a lot more better options in Chinatown compared to this.

The Yum cha was quite good. Seems like a nice clean place with newish decor.

At the time we went, there was a 30% off deal, but it was a sham, the prices were just jacked up by 30% so that in the end it is the same Price as other places (i.e. expensive).

I probably would not go back if the 30% off deal was ever removed.

Service seemed nice and friendly.

Food was not fresh, over cooked, had a running tummy after dinner. Also took forever to serve dinner, over an hour wait. When complained to waiters, just kept telling you to wait, and gave different sort of lies. Finally reached the owner/boss, gave bad attitude. Wow, that’s what a private restaurant would do, don’t care about your complaint and don’t care about their reputation, you come or not, they don’t care. That’s the feeling I get. Will never go back to this restaurant again, DISAPPOINTED, and over priced, ridiculous pricing!!!!!! There are other better options in Chatswood, they don’t deserve your business.

The staff were standing there and chatting no one came to take our order, we were about to walk out then someone came to take the order. This place is ridiculously expensive, the portion was very small and the dishes were very salty not taste at all. I will NEVER gonna go back again.
Gourmet Hero
Would not set food in this restaurant ever again. Dinner’s portion was so small and overpriced. Sub standard service and no smile at all. Got a feeling everyone was forced to work in a labor camp.
It was our first time dining at Star Capital Seafood Restaurant and we are not likely to be back.
This place needs a serious change in a number of areas.
Firstly, prices are not clear but we weren't expecting to be charged $33.80 for a dish of water spinach that can usually be purchased for about $2 a bunch from the Chinese grocery store.
The restaurant charges $4 per person for tea that you never ordered or received... Lucky we picked it up before paying the bill.
The senior staff seem to have an attitude problem and aren't very friendly at all. The junior staff certainly were more thoughtful and our waiter was nice enough to allocate a good meaty portion of the lobster to my 3yo son.
Finally, I'm not sure what their payment policy is because they just don't accept credit cards at all although we did notice other tables paying with plastic. We were told strictly cash only when we asked for the bill. In this day and age I would have thought they would accommodate other forms of payment... Can't imagine a tax audit to be fun for this restaurant.

Overall, food was OK but I wouldn't be going back based on the above feedback. Overpriced, bad attitude, dodgy billing, unclear pricing and a black economy means this is a place to avoid.

Ridiculously pricy! Had yum cha however in half an hour barely served at all. Had to finish early. Terrible service, asked for food while got no answer but we are busy
Naomi
I would go to any other Chinese restaurant than this one. It is severely overpriced, appallingly under serviced and food positively average. Would
definitely not go back. Do not waste your money.

Went on an Thursday, was really quiet and constant food trolley staff coming to us as their weren't many people which came. The food is definitely nice which an immense flavour to all.The Shrimp dumpling however needed improvement, the skin lacked the chewiness of all other yum Cha places.Staff are nice but when they came to our table frequently it got annoying.Things here are a bit expensive and overpriced in my preference, but still nice.
Baz Juan Pablo Sanchez
Came here with a group of friends and left with the consensus that we had all been let down by flavoring lacking food. What was more disappointing was the lost in translation waiting at tables with incorrect plates being sent to us

Re-reviewed June 2018

Haven’t been back for dinner due to high prices, but have been to yum cha here a few times this year.
Above average for Sydney standards. Have traditional items (mixed offal, pig’s blood etc) that aren’t available at many yum chas. Everything is ok, dumpling wrappers not over steamed and soggy, and other steamed dishes (chicken feet, tripe, pork rib, squid, turnip cake etc) have the right flavours and not too much msg. Fried items were probably not on par with the rest.

Go in not expecting too much, and you’ll be well pleased.

Original review July 2016
Just above average Cantonese cuisine in Chatswood. Probably better than King Fook and Fook Yuen, but priced around 20% higher. Very pricey! The Peking Duck is one of the most expensive I've seen at well over $100, and just a bit above average at best.

I recommend their takeaway BBQ duck along with Winsure and Tim's in Chatswood.
Chris
Very clean.
Friendly staff.
All dishes were beautiful.
Can recommend drunken prawns, whole lobster, coral trout on noodles and duck pancakes.
Unvenomous
been there on CNY eve.

I used to live in Chatswood for five years but never went to this restaurant, it has impression to me it will be very expensive as seafood tanks are huge, compare to other restaurants, especially those Chinese BBQ restaurants.

Surprised by its Chinese style BBQs! I mean the cha-shew (BBQ pork?), ducks and even chickens are no doubt the Best BBQ I ever had in Australia!

My recommendation is next time when you go to chatswood for some takeaway of BBQ stuffs, try this shop! It's really much better than others in Chatswood.

Star capital is my favorite Chinese restaurant - Cantonese cuisine in Sydney. Good service from the staffs, Spacious modern environment, most importantly I have never been disappointed with the food. Start off with the soup of the day, it's so warm and soothing, feels like home! The seafood there is great. Try pipies xo sauce with fried noodles base. It's delicious. Lobsters, scallops, oysters, its all fresh and yummy! Meat dishes are great too, bbq platter, sweet and sour pork and deep fried pigeon are my favorite!
Reserve room for dessert If u like sweet soup, it is very yummy!

Awesome place, great food, friendly staff. A bit pricey but worth the money and automatically pack your leftovers for you to take home and has now become our favourite restaurant
Anna
Not that cheap and not that great either. Food was quite salty and the ingredients for some things were a bit random, i.e. chicken and mushrooms for what is usually pork. Been a couple of times though, coz sometimes you just feel like yumcha and it’ll do.
Erika-Anne
One of my favorite Yum cha place is here.
Most of the staff speaks Chinese but not English. I found myself a bit difficult to communicate with them but always friendly and nice. They try to understand my poor Chinese.haha

Food serving are very quick and taste good. I've been here more than 5times so far. My fav is Radish Cake:) You better order as It takes time to cook.

$28.80 for a fried rice, nothing special at all, some rice, a bit of egg, diced ham and a few shallots you're kidding. My daughter picked the restaurant as she liked the fancy lights but that was the only highlight.
Jmanchatty
Pretty average chinese restaurant, service wasnt that great my first time but it has picked up since then

Food is average, some dishes could be made better like the steamed fish (should be hard to get wrong) and came out a bit slow but nothing too bad to complain about

Not good and not bad, overall missable

Should have heeded the warnings below and gone to a less disappointing yum cha restaurant in Chatswood which would have been slightly better. As with most yum cha restaurants, the food wasn't entirely bad as you can't really stuff up every single dish and that's the saving grace for most. Usually, the measuring stick of any YC are the staples of Sui Mai (Prawn and Pork Dumplings) and Har Gau (prawn dumplings). Incredibly both were disappointing lacking in authentic flavours and incredibly undersized. What were good were the Beef Balls, Fried Prawn Dumplings, Fried Glutinous Rice Balls.

The ambience is quite nice as their setting is elegant and the crockery a class above the rest. There's no battle of the fastest table setting here and therefore you won't hear the deafening and highly disturbing clatter of cutlery by careless waiters. In fact, those who care more about the service than food at yum cha restaurants will be happy with this place as the waiters are friendly and attentive.

Dinner is an entirely different affair where service is elevated again to a higher level and the seafood is always cooked perfectly. Prices for seafood are market price and no different to any other Chinese restaurant in the area. Lobster could be cooked two ways and presented nicely.

I went to this restaurant yesterday for dinner.. just wanting to try it out.. thinking I was in the mood for seafood.. but this restaurant was AWFUL.Initially we had a nice gentlemen explain the 2 course trout option to us listing a few ways the trout can be served at our choosing. A manager-type looking man then took our order.. offering NO cooking options for us. The food was OVERPRICED and average. Very oily and nothing special considering they're about $40 even for a plate of vegetables. The manager-like man then proceeded to add tea ($4 per head) to our order without asking (or offering) and AFTER the meal plonked a pot of tea on our table (no information about type of tea AND no tea cups to drink the tea with) and walked away??? When it was questioned at the time of payment, the ladies at the counter said "there's tea at your table". They eventually took the charges off the bill... what disappointing behaviour.I would also like to mention the dusting of the chandeliers was occurring DURING service right above the path where waiters were running food from the kitchen.Do not recommend. Will never visit again.

Trying to find decent Yum Cha's in Sydney, or in the Hills area is actually getting harder these days. Many restaurants have new managers, smaller portions, poorer quality. Was originally going to take my relatives out to the city, but since they've been there before, decided to head to Chatswood. Another day of uni skipped for food w/ relatives

EXUBERANT PRICES!!!! Prices have increased over the past couple of months. Ridiculously overpriced, RIP OFF!!! $264.00 bill for two adults and two small children and NO seafood ordered. A lot better Chinese restaurants around, half the price.
Gourmanda.me
Yum Cha here is unfortunately not that great. It's been drained of any stronger authentic flavours and made more commercial so it doesn't challenge untested palates.

Wow price increase. Came here a year ago and visited again this weekend, prices have gone up 50% for the same food we had a year ago. $50 for honey king prawns is outrageous!! The waiters were so embarrassed when we asked them about it. Safe to say we won't be coming back here. We had our drinks and left...
Greg Graham
Ripoff, dirty, sneaky. Prior research found the menu button on the restaurant website mysteriously unresponsive, but that's OK as the place looks pretty good, at least from the outside, so we walked in figuring it's probably pricey but upscale Chinese occasionally is OK, right? WRONG. The place was dirty, toilets too, the staff rushing and harried, generally chaotic atmosphere. The place packed and resembling a shed full of pigs at feeding time. Opened the menu and WHAT? $60 dishes, $45 dishes, $70 dishes? Where TF were the $20 or $30 dishes? My immediate thought was "where else do you get charged these prices?" The answer? Glass Brasserie Sydney Hilton, Rockpool etc. etc. Was this Rockpool? No way, Jose.

All three of us looked at each other and nodded, then rose in unison and walked out. No explanation. Staff didn't even blink. Went down the street and had dinner at the Chinese BBQ Kitchen for $28 each for 4 steamed dim sims entree, fried rice and 3 x huge main courses, one of which was king prawns, and as much Chinese tea as we could drink.

As we were shown our seats, I felt reassured by spotting Cantonese locals sitting about and enjoying their brunch. Once the tea and chilli oil were prepared, it was time to eat! First off the cart was the Siu Mai , the golden poster child of the yum cha experience. Without eating this, you truly can’t say you had dim sum – simple as that

Morning or afternoon yum cha is best when friends or families gather to chat, eat delicious dim sum and drink traditional Chinese tea. Located right near The Concourse on Victoria Avenue, Star Capital Seafood Restaurant has recently open ...

Constant Diner
Star Capital is a more upscale Chinese restaurant along Chatswood's busy shopping strip. From the decor it looked like it was going to be expensive and surprise surprise it was...not to the point of being unaffordable but still pricier than other Chinese restaurants around the area. I had yum cha there on a weekday and was able to score a discount (I think it was 20-30% off the bill for afternoon tea). But even with the discount I paid more than what I would have had I dined at Kam Fook. The food was OK, nothing spectacular. Because it was tea time there was hardly anyone around so we had excellent and attentive service. Would I go back? Maybe only for special occasions. Pork spareribs. I loved that there was hardly any bones and fat..all meaty goodness! Shumai my favourite yum cha item of all time Prawn dumpling. I didn't like this one, the wrapper was a bit thick and chewy. Prawn and sesame rolls were good The tea was a standout. Best basic jasmine tea from a yum cha place! The p

UTTERLY OVERPRICED RUBBISH- DON'T BE FOOLED BY THEIR CHANDELIERS + GOLD FABRICS ON THE CHAIRS. This restaurant's yum cha is a total failure. The dim sims are neither authentic nor fresh, very salty (a way of covering up unfreshness) and very expensive. The tea is of a very low calibre- you might as well drink water with artifical brown colouring.

I have tried yum cha in many places over the years and the yum cha at Fook Yuen Chatswood, even if declined in quality over the years, is still 10 times better than Star Capital with much better value for money. Even Kam Fook at Westfield Chatswood does way better.

Star Capital and Fortune Place at Mandarin Centre are two newer yum cha restaurants in Chatswood (both opened around 2013) but neither of them are even half decent enough to compete with Fook Yuen or Kam Fook.

Along with their bad service I don' think Star Capital will last very long.

Wonderful, Amazing, Brilliant! An Experience - on every level. Ignore the reviews below. We found this was a truly wonderful culinary 'experience' from beginning to end. Modern décor and polite and welcoming staff greeted us. We were escorted to our table where our table staff were just as attentive and friendly. (Hello Wai!) The menus are beautifully designed and laid out with some spectacular and mouth-watering photography. Prices, including for wines, are all very reasonable. We enjoyed our seafood san choy bow...a welcome surprise for us non-meat eaters - enormously. It was perfectly cooked and with a sensational flavour! We followed with the aromatic Seafood and Bean Curd Hot Pot, which was incredibly flavoursome and packed with a very generous mix of perfectly cooked fish, scallops, prawns, squid, baby bok choy and mushrooms. Accompanied by the best green beans we've ever had - cooked to absolute perfection with preserved vegetables. Plus a seafood-only fried rice. We loved every mouthful and all serves were incredibly generous. Also telling was the amount of local Chinese families of all generations dining alongside us. Having eaten at a variety of other Chinese restaurants in Chatswood over the past couple of years, Star Capital is definitely our No 1. Our tastebuds can't wait to go back!

Great seafood yum cha. Not sure if something has changed recently but I found the service excellent. On top of that the range of seafood yum cha was very good although the fried squid was a little to deep fried for me. Great range of dumplings which was our primary reason for yum cha. Also an unusual prawn and satay dumpling that was very good. I would have no hesitation recommending this new Restaurant in Chatswood for service and food based on my visit.

Dot1001. Food is pricey but good! Service is great as long as you don't get Lily Li - if you do perhaps ask for a different server - you'll enjoy your meal alot better with someone else!
Try and go on a Mon or Tues, when it's quieter, you get treated like royalty.
If you like the 'experience' of dining without considering cost too much, try this place.

Like it, eel was very good with traditional style of cooking, dishes are nice as well, deco is excellent, even though the price is a little bit high,if u compare with other Chinese/Cantonese seafood restraunt,it definitely worthy, it has better environment, service and above average cuisines, and star capital provides lots of fresh/ live seafood such as eel, perch, crab etc. Good place for special event.

Really really BAD service!!!. I went to yum cha this morning with my friends and there was a waitress acting so rude to us. i remember her name is Lily. She doesn't understand a word of English and moreover, she even stood there talking with the Chinese people next table and just ignoring us waving our hands and asking for services. She speaks and laugh so loud. It is RIDICULOUS!!!! We would NEVER EVER come to this restaurant again!!!
Susan
Bad customer service and management. Went into the restaurant for the first time and was served by Lily. Her service was horrible and does not understand a single word of English. There was no response when there was clearly eye contact between us and she knew we wanted to order. Horrible manners that uses swear words occasionally. Food is overpriced.

Above the rest.. Thought here we go, another one in Chatswood. Must say the yum cha is a level above others I have had over the years. The steamed dumpling burst in mouth with generous quality ingredients. The fried morsels at just as good. Just as was getting tried of yum cha this place has refreshed my taste for it. And the trolley pushers are not in your face. A stand out in Chatswood and remember you get what you pay for. After reading some of the earlier negative reviews, I found out they have new floor management in last few weeks so to those unsatisfied diners, give it another try.

Wonderful meal. Great food and service.
S
Horrible place. Waited over an hour for yum cha. Food was damn ordinary- skin of the prawn dumplings were done terribly. Yum Cha Trolleys barely came around- some of the food turned us off as it didn't look nice.

Worst thing was, a waiter dropped a teapot in their 'mini kitchen' area and the bits of it flung onto my forehead. They were lucky it didn't hit my eyes.

Not recommended at all.
C_k
Horrible. Worst experience EVER. This place is absolute rubbish. The moment we stepped in the waiters made eye contact with us and then looked away as if we were invisible. Even after we spoke to someone at the cashier she simply nodded and went back to work. Throughout the whole dinner the service was absolutely horrible. This place is so overcharged and sneaky. Additional items were added to our bill even though we never ordered them and when we spoke to the staff they just charged us extra for something else. DON'T EVEN BOTHER with this place. Honestly you're better off eating at a food court than this rubbish dump.
Ekky
Slow service, over priced and over cooked/steamed food

Prawns were mushy

Hard to get staff attention and restaurant was only half full

Would not return as service, good quality does not match the price being charged
H_chan
The Captain was rude. I had to move twice for prams. Attitude negative

Food were below standard . Compared to Lemon Grove Yum Cha (Food Court) Star is way below in standard even compared to food court

However, prices are way above even for the tea ($2.50 each) Free @ Lemon Grove

THat will be my first and last visit
WayJack
Bad service, worst food, overcharged. Decided to have our son's birthday there tonight, an abysmal experience. We eat out often and can't recall a restaurant experience of a worse calibre. The staff bar one or two were at best trainees, had no idea of customer service and couldn't understand us whether we spoke Chinese or English. We were left without bowls with food in front of us which had taken a long time to arrive. Food was lukewarm, we had a $409.00 lobster which had minimal flavour and when we asked where the noodles were which are a customary accompaniment to the dish we were told that we hadn 't asked for them.
The hot and sour soup lacked chilli and vinegar making it just an ordinary soup, likewise the pork chops in vinegar sauce which lacked any vestige of vinegar. The complimentary red bean soup was tepid and insipid. I won't go on as we had 8 dishes, suffice to say that none were of any merit or flavour to speak of.

To add fuel to fire, when time came to pay they added on a bottle of wine which we hadn't had, and we found that the slim jugs of diet coke which were about 1.5lt size cost us $18.00 each! Plus they charged $2.80 each for Chinese tea - this was not yum cha but a meal where tea is normally complimentary. I couldn't allow myself to add a tip and when the girl saw I hadn't tipped, she took the slip down in front of us to staff at the back to show them. We didn't get so much as a backward look as we departed having spent over $700 on 7 of us for a regrettable experience in a restaurant which surely won't survive amongst the copious competitive offerings in Chatswood. Be warned!
Bluecheese2
We received little to no service from the moment we entered the restaurant to when we went to pay the bill. There was no consistency in the taste nor presentation of the food, each dish ranging from too bland to overcooked. Nor was there any organised order in which dishes came out. The waiters in suits liked making snide remarks and spent the whole night patting themselves on the back rather than attending to the tables. When the bill came, we were also hit with some double figures of unexpected costs and service fees which everyone should wary of. All in all it was a dreadful experience and we will never be going back despite it being a local.
