Review Kreta Ayer Restaurant - Chatswood

Decent food. Ok service Hainan chicken rice is okay - chicken could be more tender and rice is a bit hard - could be cooked longer. The combination laksa is a good portion and comes with prawns, tofu, meatball, dumpling, chicken. Costs about $18 each. Hot soya drink was delicious sweet and very hot. Fair number of tables inside. Service is quick although have to ask for water a few times.

Ordered a chilli fried fish and a pan fried oyster omelette. Great plating of the fish and egg. Everything was flavourful, balanced and yummy. Would order the fish again🐟

Such great prices for a delicious variety of seafood and veggie dishes! Highly recommend the hainan chicken, scallops, kangkong, spicy prawns and kumquat ice tea!

The best Cha Kwe Teow in SYDNEY. Growing up in M’sia Cha Kwe Teow (stir fried flat noodle) is a dish you have, wherever you go! Especially during supper time, at the hawker stall. I have been looking for a good Kwe Teow stir fried for awhile now, most of them lacking the Wok flavour(due to inadequate of heat/low flame). Other dishes like the Cereal Prawn and Laksa is good too.

Ordered Nasi Lemak. I'm sorry but cannot recommend this restaurant. We got soggy anchovies, oily and watery beef rendang. They used salty normal peanuts that from the supermarkets but bot the authentic peanuts with skin. Unfortunately I could only eat the rice and the cucumber.

This place has a great expectation, but was average in execution . I ordered the Prawn Mee soup, the soup was a bit bland. And the veggie was very bitter.

Best of malaysian and singaporean food here, staff are nice and friendly, highly recommended

Ordered the signature fried fish with vermicelli noodle soup. And was really disappointed with the quality. The fish was paper thin, it’s like eating fried flour with fish flavour - where is the fish?? Gave my feedback at the checkout counter and they didn’t seem to care.

It s full house within 15 mins we arrived. we order quite a few of the starred dishes, altho the only nice dish is the sambal okura.

The best Laksa in town, very large portion. I chose salted egg crab this time, very delicious. Vegetable is fresh and spicy which warm me up. The order-to-make bean curb pudding gave the dinner a complete one. Definitely will visit again!

Quite an extensive menu with generous servings. Their dishes are quite oily and quality isn’t always that great. I really like the tofu pudding here!

They removed the Tofu/Vege Laksa from the menu!?!?

Xihuahua 🐶 and I had many Malaysian food experiences so we thought this would be similar. But there are subtle differences from Singaporean food. It had fusion elements from many places of Asia.

I especially enjoyed you spicy clams. The rich sauce was perfect. Omelette with oysters is my fav too, the highlight is the crispy crust at the bottom. Indian pancake is a bit too tough for my liking and the curry beef although has inconsistent texture.

Staff is quite negligent as we felt very ignored trying to order. The staff just rather stare into the void. Free fruit at the entrance is pretty cool. Overall a very delicious try!

Kreta Ayer is a Singaporean casual eatery franchise. I have been to the one in Chatswood Chase a few times and have enjoyed the dishes i ordered. Especially the hainan chicken laksa, when you can’t decide whether to order hainan chicken or laksa why not get the combo! The chicken was tender and the laksa soup was creamy and flavourful.

Good service. Loved the roti canai with curry, it was the closest to the curry I had in Singapore. The missus loved the chicken rice, she has lived in Singapore and this was the best chicken rice she has had here in Sydney. I will make sure to try the Singapore chilli crab next time for sure!

Food was okay, but very, very oily. The flavours were strong and salty so the combination with the oiliness was a bit too much for me. And the smell further in the restaurant was quite terrible. We moved tables after a couple of minutes.

This place sets quite a standard for Singaporean/Malaysia food in the north shore. You do need to know what to order though. The laksa is outstanding, and so is Moreton bay bugs. The roti is average and the char kway teoh isn't much to write home about. The service is fast and friendly, food comes quickly and the price is right.

Good quality food. Ordered oyster omelette, whole fried fish, and stir fry watercrest. Taste is authentic. The belachan chili is exceptional. The tofu fa dessert is one of the finest in Sydney. The only drawback is that the venue is a bit tight.

Do not go to this place - avoid!
We saw them serving curry which was pulled from a takeaway box and heated up in the microwave.
We ordered a laksa and it came with wontons, bbq pork and other random items - not authentic at all!
The roti tasted like it was from a frozen packet (guarantee it was). Not fluffy and soft. Instead it was flat, crunchy and perfectly rounded - looked like the frozen ones I make for myself at home.
Kreta Ayer, you can't fool me. My Malaysian friends all laughed as the food was a total joke.

Frozen fish cooked with rice porridge!!! Yuck!!! If u cannot make seafood just don't put on the menu!! Did your chef tried the dish before u can put it on the menu???!

Who's a big fan of Singaporean Crab? I check out popular chain Kreta Ayer for the full Singaporean food experience. Have you been to Kreta Ayer before?. MW and I wonder into Chatswood Chase and see a busy stream of people outside Kreta Ayer. We head into this Singaporean chain and I make a conscious thought to visit the Eastwood store as it's closer next time. It's full of people which creates a nice buzz at 12pm on this public holiday. Probably the worst imitation of the Singaporean cuisine. I have been to Singapore many times and I have not seen or tried Hokkien Mee and Prawn Paste chicken like those at Kreta Ayer. The authentic Singaporean version should have thick vermicelli, squids, pork belly and bean sprouts and not green leafy vegetables.

Kreta Ayer Restaurant is great for Singaporean Cuisine. Even better, they have a number of locations around Sydney. Whether you are after something quick and tasty like roti canai or a laska or if you are after a seafood feast or one of Singapores most famous dished the singapore chilli mud crab, Kreta Ayer has you sorted.

Decent Malaysian food, some dishes e.g. tofu, garlic shoots, chicken, desserts were better than others.

Overall would try it again. Probably try some of the standards to see what the actual level is like.

The food was quite good, the skewers weren't really strong in flavour and was just very normal. The char Keoy Teow was the best I would say having lots of flavours and very authentic. The customer service was great, the staff were really friendly and nice, but was very chaotic in the restaurant.Overall I would come back again and the food is quite nice!

Spore chilli mud crab aint cheap here $49 per half kilo if i am not mistaken. And of course, it changes daily. Not sure if the crab we got was farmed or not, the crab meat was not 'dense' enough, nothing outstanding about the sauce either. I guess it would do if one has a craving for spore chilli crab and does not want to venture into the city.

One of the few places which serves spore oyster omelette (not available everyday as it depends on the supply of fresh oyster), i was apprehensive of getting my hopes up after being told multiple times that it was not available. This too was nothing to write home about, though the oysters were indeed fresh. It just is not authentic enough.

Kangkong (water spinach) belachan (shrimp paste) and fried tofu both were 'so-so'.

Might return to try their other street food.
