Review Papparich - Chatswood

Matthew Shanahan (Matt)
Super delicious Malaysian hawker food! We had a good selection of dishes and drinks: Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang, Nasi Kunyit Rice, Roti Canai with Three Sauces, Satay Chicken, Steamed Chicken with Chicken Rice, Tin Wat Hor, Ice Teh Tarik and Mango Mania. Some of the dishes could have been presented a bit better, but the food is meant to be hawker fare afterall, and all of the dishes tasted great! The fitout is clean and modern, with both tables and booths, and we appreciated being accommodated with our request to be seated away from other guests near fresh air, given the ongoing pandemic.

Decided to try the Paparich in Chatswood while taking a stroll. Turns out it was decent Malaysian food. We had the wan tan hor (chicken, prawns, fish cake) and it was tasty. We wiped the plate clean! Noodles had the charred taste with a generous serving of chicken fish cakes and prawns. Very different from the city Paparich which had 2 fish cakes. The Nasi goreng special was alright. The rice was blend. Chicken however was the saving grace. It was very tender and packed with flavour. The sambal was a tint too sweet with not enough heat. We also tried the fried fish noodle soup. Soup was tasty, fish was fresh with crispy skin, perfect with the noodle. Soup served however could be a little bit warmer. Teh tarik had the “tarik” bubbles which made it smooth and flavoursome. Service was not as prompt as some other Paparich but the politeness of the waiter kinda made up for it. All in all, it was a satisfying meal.

Ordered from the vegetarian menu. The food was so good and comforting. There was way too much rice for the small amount of curry. We ordered drinks along with food but it was forgotten. Eventually we were handed the drinks as we left. The lychee drink was heaven.

Good place to munch Malaysian foods. The Roti Chanai and Nasi Goreng fried rice satisfied my appetite. Also, would recommend to try chicken skin fry as it's in the PapaRich highlighter menu. Overall, delicious food, decent price with a great customer service.

Pretty average Malaysian hawker fare, no wow factor but if you need a quick fix, it’ll do the job. Service was attentive! Satay was fragrant, char koay teow lacked heat, pan meen broth was starchy and need more liquid and the okra needed seasoning (it was bit bland). But the sambal belacan condiment made it all better!!!

Overall score of 76/100 A unique offering they have, which I will never get sick of (and one day come to miss if these guys ever close up shop) is the vegetarian mutton option. Really nice tasting vego option, packed full of flavour, and a really great meat substitute! Their Teh Tarik is also highly addictive - in our sitting, we ordered 2 each as we dined. The roti is nicely cooked and definitely not 'frozen packet' like. The fish noodles are OK, nothing spectacular. Service could also be improved given somewhat apathetic expression and demeanour from wait staff. Overall, not a bad visit.

Had the chicken laksa, flavour was very average and took forever to receive food. Longest wait ever. Perhaps there was only one person in the kitchen cooking. Definitely not worth the wait.

We had late lunch at PappaRich yesterday. It wasn’t busy so the food came out quick. We were happy about that. Although it was too quick. We had char koay teow, nasi lemak with chicken and sambal squid and roti kaya. My husband’s rice was warm not hot, sambal squid was a bit cold and tough to chew, cucumber was sliced very thick. I had char koay teow and it was very bland and had a hair inside so I was not able to enjoy and finish it. Knowing that we were really hungry. We shared a roti kaya which I think was alright. We were very disappointed with everything I think the only good part was the server being very accommodating and always smiling at us. PappaRich was good when it first opened here in Chatswood but I guess not anymore.

Interior is very nice and modern with friendly staff. They’ve got a wide variety in their menu and their curries are pretty good. However, their fried chicken wasn’t crispy at all and their roti wasn’t fluffy either.

🥩Roti Canai with Beef Rendang ($16.5)
🍗Roti Telur with Curry Chicken (414.9)

While the curries and roti tasted good, the serving of roti was too small. I had a lot of curry leftover and didn't feel super satisfied. I think the roti telur had more and it cost less? The sambal sauce was nice, and the beef was super tender.

Normally love PapaRich (best is at Macquarie Centre) but had an unpleasant experience in the one at Chatswood. Not only did the waiters continue to bring us the wrong dishes but one even interrupted us during our dinner to ask if we had another person coming then proceeded to take the chair to sit on for himself. In terms of food, the curry was way too oily and the drinks tasted like soap. PapaRich is great, but at Chatswood it needs to be improved.

Too expensive for malaysian food

Been here twice. When it opened, they used to have huge lines in order to access food, however, those have died down and you can now easily get a seat. The prices have definitely increased since it was open. The ambience is very nice, definitely has a very nice interior design and the restaurant is very spacious. I was able to book the room at the back for my friends to gather and socialise in, which they gave us to for free. Would definitely recommend this room to others, but you have to have a minimum number of people (which I have forgotten the number). The food is nice, but I feel like for the price, I would expect better. The staff constantly came back to check on us, which was great service!

Been here a few times and although the roti canai is not as good as Mamak, it is still tasty. I think the curries here are better than at Mamak's though and I haven't had a bad main dish here.

Went to papparich for my favourite dish (vegetarian curry laksa). It tastes as good as the laksa in their Melbourne restaurants. (The food quality is standardised and consistent)
The staff were not very attentive - there were a few staff standing very close to us, but no one came to speak to us even if we were the only customers standing at the waiting zone.

My visit 10th time. Good place for gathering with my family&friends. Reasonable Malaysian delicious food-Laksa, Hainan Chicken rice, Roti etc.
Love to eat Kaya bread as well.
I'm from Singapore and feel like I'm home while I'm here:) They do free charge of cake cutting service so good for celebrating bday etc.

Had a wonderful weekend lunch at PappaRich Chatswood recently. Since it's been open for a while now, there was plenty of seating in their spacious dining area. They were also happy to accommodate our little ones' pram at our table.

We ordered the Roti Canai, Chicken Laksa, and the Pappa Special Nasi Lemak with curry chicken and sambal prawns.

The roti was lovely and crispy on the outside, but light and fluffy on the inside. The dipping curries were both delicious, as was the sambal.

I had the Chicken Laksa, which was excellent; the soup was creamy and well-flavoured with the right amount of heat.

My partner really enjoyed the Nasi Lemak too.

With mains that good, we had to have dessert! I ordered the banana fritters with vanilla ice cream, and was pleasantly surprised to find 2 whole bananas on my plate with a good scoop of ice cream. The batter was crisp and light. A great finish to a great meal!

With friendly staff, a nice atmosphere and great food, I would happily recommend this restaurant.
Hzalien001
worst dinner service ever, took over an hour to get our chicken skin, AFTER everyone has finished eating!
last time when we came they served shrimps that have already gone bad and nearly made me puke.

roti has different flavors are kids favorite. the vegetable laksa is not bad.. just everytime I got dirty plates with grease or cleaned improperly. I would go there without kids insisting. I never feel the side dish/dip/soup coming with roti are of quality food. would give 2 if it wasn't kids.

Good Malaysian food, been to different PappaRich and they were all very good. I like the Wat Tan Hor and satay here. But I hope they can bring something new to Australia.
Feedthatbelly
Papparich is the place to go if you are in need of a quick fix of Malaysian food.

My favourites: hainan chicken rice (can request for chicken thighs), chicken skewer with satay sauce.
Neateatsydney
Pappa Rich has nailed it, offering Sydney-siders quality authentic Malaysian cuisine. The array of choice on the menu is unbelievable with ALL your favourites, from your classic Roti Canai to their Fish Head Noodle Soup! It definitely is now one of my favourite go-to places whenever I am craving some chilli!

WORST/RUDE SERVICE EVER and WORST FOOD EVER!!! Our order was Roti Planta, Pappa Special Nasi Goreng with Fried Chicken, Pappa special biryani rice with sambal eggplant, fried chicken and sambal prawns and Tau foo fa with sugar syrup. After 10 minites, a waiter cam back and told us that the tau foo fa is not available and the biryani rice is also not available. I settled not ordering the tau foo fa and use regular rice on the special biryani rice because i and my partner is so hungry. Our order came after 30 minutes and instead of the nasi goreng, they gave us nasi lemak. I asked the waiter to check the order and replace it with the right one. We again waited for another 20 minutes before my partner called the attention of the waiter to follow up our right order of nasi goreng. The waiter came back after a few minutes telling us that we have to re order again as the chicken will take a longer time (they should have told us earlier when he returned the wrong order to the kitchen). So we ordered another special biryani rice without the biryani rice and instead just plain rice because the waiter said it is faster. He came back again after a few minutes and told us that it will take another 20 minutes. Another waitress came over telling us that it is. Ot available. We cancelled the order and ask for the manager. The waitress bang our table when she got the order slip and we never saw the manager. We went to the teal to pay for the other food and told him our ridiculous ordeal. He said he cannot do anything. I was so mad and not a single apology from the rude staff. On top of it all, the roti is burnt, sambal prawns where smelly, not fresh and texture is like rubber, the chicken is very dry. I WILL NEVER come back to this worst restaurant with the rudest incompetent staffs.

Ordered takeaway wat tan hor and they forgot to give me the egg gravy sauce, how does that even make sense when its the main component of the dish. Gave papparich a call and didnt even apologize, terrible customer service

PappaRich is a popular restaurant chain which specialises in Malaysian cuisine. Unlike other Asian chains like Din Tai Fung or Ipppudo which maintain consistency and food standards in their outlets, the chain of PappaRich restaurants in Sydney performs poorly to their cousins in Thailand or Singapore.

I visited their Chatswood outlet after work last week and ordered their Nasi Briyani with Red Chicken and Sambal Prawns and their Cripsy Chicken Skin. Both the chicken skin and red chicken were rock hard. Even a set of teeth made of gold might not help you. I wondered if the chefs actually QC what goes out of their kitchen and check if they are fit for consumption. The sambal prawns, shrimps to be precise, were stale, limp and pathetic. It seemed that the prawns were tortured before they were caught. The Briyani was poorly prepared. Atrocious food.

We always are on a hunt for authentic roti, and papparich didn't fail to deliver!
Food came out fresh and tasted absolutely delicious! The egg and onion roti is to die for! Chicken was cooked well and the egg noodles were flavoursome.

The wait for a table wasn't too bad. Wait for Roti wasnt too long.. big turn off was when they forgot my meal. Everyone else was nearly done eating and I was still waiting.. poor poor form!! Lucky the food was good but..

It's almost 2pm on a weekday, and there is still a queue for table. Didn't have to wait long, less than 10 mins. Really wanted to get my fav dish the fried fish head noodle soup, but they didn't have anymore fish head, so had to settle for the fish fillet version. The noodle soup taste pretty much the same, delicious mix of subtle tangy and salty, not fishy at all. Lots of fillets, the fish was crispy on the outside, and nicely moist inside.

Delicious food and quite a variety of options on the menu available.
Enjoyed the beef rendang, roti, and vegetarian char koay teow . Satay wasn't made very good quality meat
Really good drinks (I enjoyed the lychee)
reasonable prices for both food and drinks.
Quite loud inside
Pam
SATISFYING. I came in hungry like a beast! So I ordered roti telur ($8.90), pappa wet tan mor noodles ($13) and the naan bread ($ doesn't matter cause tasted so bad and dry like normal bread). Yes i demolished all the dishes I ordered. Personally roti telur was quite filling and very satisfying (my favourite dish). The noodles were also good but I've had better. Good experience, tho next time I think I'll just order roti here. ☺️
Sarah&Gluttony
Amazing Malaysian comfort food, for anytime of the day.
The menu is extensive and affordable. I recommend trying their nasi lemak, with a roti on the side!
They have a 2-3 page drink menu, consisting of coffees, smoothies and milk beverages.

Re-reviewed July 2017
The high rating is almost based on laksa exclusively. Apart from CKT, I have not tried any other dishes in recent times as in previous years they have been thought to be average. CKT was strange, they don't use dark soy.
Papparich has been a staple curry and assam laksa takeaway this winter. Always thick and flavourful, sometimes we add more water on reheating to make a bit more soup! Consistent every time.

***
Highly rate the laksa here (curry, assam) thick and flavourful curry broth, strong fish broth in assam laksa 4.5/5
Roti okay 3-4/5
Other dishes (steamed chicken, curry chicken, stir fried noodles) average.

I remember back a few years ago, I never really enjoyed PappaRich. Until it closed down in Chatswood and then all I could think about was going there to eat again. So I’m really happy they reopened and are now in a way more accessible place than before.

The food is pretty good, I definitely have grown to like Malaysian food a lot more in the last few years. Their roti was very nice, but definitely could’ve been bigger for the cost. The drinks are still very good, and overall I’m very happy with this place. Will be back to eat a lot more from now on.

Can never go wrong with this popular Malaysian chain. Nice drink selection and diverse range of food. Found that the curry to roti ratio is a little bit off but it was definitely tasty. The mains are decent in portion too.

I was shocked at how much I enjoyed the food here (despite the dodgy name). We have now eaten here twice in the last week. My favourite dishes so far are the roti canai with chicken curry and the mixed satay. The skewers have a nice subtle hint of lemongrass and the meat is tender. The roti are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a great smell - just like they should be. Think they use thigh fillets in the chicken curry and they managed to get a really good texture and rich flavour.
It's pretty fair value too, I thought. Two of us ate like pigs for less that $60 (without drinks).
EATING BAE
Food was good, price was acceptable, Penang Char Kweoy Teow was really good, the noodles was lightly burnt which made the smokey taste, roti was average, I also got the mixed of beef and chicken skewers, chicken was nicely cook and tender, beef was chewy, not my favourite, the green tea drink was perfect for summer time, however it was milky and I couldn't really taste the green tea flavour.

favourite malaysian cuisine so far! the roti canai is the highlight here. tried the ice kacang, it was okay but lil bit sweet for me. service was friendly and fast. the price was average to high.. for beverages, should try mango mania & tropical lime! they were fantastic!

Don't know what has gone wrong with this PappaRich branch but I can assure you that other branches are definitely better than this one. In terms of presentation, the dishes looked unclean and tasted blend. I didn't take any pictures of the drinks I've order because they did not look very good on pictures. I still love PappaRich, but probably won't come to the Chatswood branch anymore.

Had the pan mee soup but soup was not hot. It was warm towards cool. Sambal belacan served was saving grace. The nasi Britain was dry and had to ask for extra curry sauce

Went to PappaRich on a Saturday evening . It was pretty empty and we could easily get a nice table at the courtyard 😊 we had the mixed satay plate of chicken and beef ... the beef satay was Amazinggggg and the chicken was good too. My hubby had the roti with curry chicken and I had the roti with beef rendang ! Loved every bite of it ! We left with filled bellies and happy hearts ! Thanks PappaRich 😍

I just had dinner with my sister and her boyfriend here at PappaRich in Chatswood. My sister introduced me to this restaurant as one of the best she has tried so far in NSW hat serves Malaysian food and I think I was able to experience why.
The place had an appealing interior that presents a part of Malaysia; warm with its vibrantly colored walls and welcoming hospitality by the staff. When we were seated, I was surprised that we get to write what we wanted to order based from the wide variety of food tha was on the menu. I chose beef rendang because I believed that a good Malaysian retaurant would serve me a great beef rendang. When the food was finally served, I noticed that the plating was pleasing to the eyes; not only was it served like in an authentic Malaysian restaurant, it represented the richness and vibrance of the culture. Taking a good bite of the soft and tender meat of the beef marinated in asian herbs and spices blew me away! I believe a second trip to this place and eating it again would do it justice. I am happy.

There’s still always a line so they must be doing something extraordinarily well… but what is it? The most recent experience was far from good, I seriously wonder what’s happened from my decent visits in the past.

The laksa was lukewarm, or maybe not even, and that alone was distracting enough to lose focus from the taste. However, it clearly didn’t taste outstanding because I know I won’t be getting it again.

Baaaad move on my part getting the biryani rice with vegetarian curry mutton because it was just… not okay. The vegetarian mutton was so tough and tasted like nothing edible in my books as harsh as that may be, it was just not pleasant. It certainly was quite the hurdle getting through it all (because I really don’t like wasting food). And I know now that biryani rice is supposed to have dried fruits in it, but that didn’t sit well with me either. Just not a fan of the random sweetness with bites here and there. So overall, it was not an enjoyable dish for me personally.

Drinks were nice but you can’t really go too wrong here.

Below average experience but because I have had better times here before, took this into consideration with the rating.

Great tasting Malaysian food. Good value for money and excellent service. You need to get used to ordering with a pen and paper but it works out much better because the order is never wrong! Their Milo Dinosaur is the bomb!

I went there with my family. Nice food, friendly staff. Children play area was a bit dirty mainly the toys.

Overall, I enjoyed the dining experience.

Felt like Malaysian food and had never dined at a PappaRich before so decided to give it a go.

Service was a bit slow the evening we visited. We waited at least ten minutes before being seated, although the pace picked up once we'd perused the menu and placed our order.

The food was fine without being memorable.

PappaRich is a fantastic place to satisfy your Malay food cravings without having to take out a loan. I always order the Pappa Char Koay Teow (N04 on the menu) which is so delicious. I tried the fried chicken skin today and unfortunately it was over fried, bitter and very salty. However the waiter was super friendly and immediately offered to return the dish for us! Although I may not be ordering the fried chicken skin again, I will definitely be coming back for more char koay teow and roti 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I love Malaysian food! This place has a wide variety of sweet and savoury dishes and a bunch of delicious drinks too. With branches opening up everywhere, there's bound to be one nearby. Love the doorbell thing. Getting the waiters attention has never been easier.

Came here after a long time of not having any Malaysian food. Ordered prawn noodles ( har mee) and my partner got the roti canai with curry chicken. Everything came hot and fresh, and we left full and happy! Best part is we didn't bust the bank eating there; for the food with a drink each and an extra roti, came to $45.50. Will be back soon!

Very authentic Malaysian taste. All dishes were full of flavour. I especially liked the roti and satay skewers. The service was a bit slow at times though.
Thought we would venture somewhere new..to the outer fringes of Chatswood to experience something different. Ok, it's one street away from Chatswood central.

This was the 2nd visit since their opening several years ago during their grand opening. I had heard that the Laksa was good, so why not? There was no queue this time and although busy, there were plenty of table due to the sheer size of the restaurant. The ordering system was the same where you would write down the code for the dishes/drinks on an ordering form. I quite liked this approach as there was minimal room for error.

The dishes came out in no particular order, simply arriving when it was cooked.

Curry Laksa - Seafood:

The most important element to a laksa is the soup and this one had a stronger curry presence than most, not drowned in coconut milk and flavour well balanced. However, the dish was let down by the fact the soup was served luke warm. Nothing takes away the life of a dish more than luke warm anything! The Hokkien noodles were undercooked and I suspect they placed raw noodles at the bottom of the bowl and spoon soup over it in the hope it would cook it through. That's fine if the soup was pipping hot not when you use mildy warm soup that had been sitting in the laksa pot. The other elements were quite good but failed to shine due to the temperature of the dish.

Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken:

A much better dish than the laksa. The curry chicken was cooked well and fragrant, the sambal was spicy and had a complexity of flavour that was appealing. The fried anchovies were very crisp and it also came with the regulation peanuts, egg and cucumbers.

Roti Canai with Beef Rendang: The Roti was perfect -crisp, fluffy and flaky but the beef was undercooked and tough although the flavour was good.

Pappa Rich could be quite good if they paid a bit more attention to detail. The menu is huge and there is a good choice of dishes but they need to get back to basics as all the faults can let down an entire dish down which is a shame as they are easily rectified.

My husband and I had a meal at Papparich restaurant last night. We started with chicken satay skewers (6) - it was quite yummy but a bit on the sweet side. My husband had rice noodles with anchovy, minced pork in soup and I had beef rendang - meat was VERY DRY and not enough gravy - nicely presented with biryani rice which was also very dry - should have had roti with it or jasmine rice. Meat should be succulent and melt in the mouth - very disappointed with this dish - had to ask for more gravy to ease the food down the throat as it was giving me indigestion. Will go back and try other dishes - service was good.

On a street between Chatswood Westfield and Chatswood Chase, there lies a Malaysian restaurant next to a notable tutoring centre (oh the memories...) by the name of PappaRich:. When my friends first mentioned this place, I kept getting this place confused with PappaRoti (are they related??), which opened years ago at Macquarie Centre and I have still yet to try it. Fast forward to the present day, I've been to PappaRich a few times so there's no more confusion....
Bernard
Food quality was well below average and service was poor. Did not clear or wipe our table down until we told them to! Sat the 4 of us at a 2 persons table! Will never go back there again..plenty of better eataries in Chatswood. Terrible service!
P
Fish Head Curry Noodles are amazing but will put you in a food coma after and hence be unable to do any shopping or any other activity for that matter for a couple of hours after. Could possibly be the use of MSG? Not too sure.
Expat Gourmand
To date, we've only had three experiences with PappaRich, and each has been in a different city. Our first PappaRich experience a few years ago was in Melbourne, newly opened at the time as the brand's very first international franchise. We tried PappaRich again, this time in its homeland, Malaysia. It was expensive by Malaysia's standards, but still a lot more affordable than its Australian counterparts. PappaRich is popping up in more locations around Australia (including three branches in Perth!), and it is proving popular with Malaysian expats and the local population alike. After trying PappaRich in yet another city, I'm pleased to say that the food quality is rather consistent, even on different continents. Now I just want PappaRich to expand to Hong Kong so that we can enjoy reliable good Malaysian cuisine on a regular basis!

Brought some takeaway from PappaRich last night for 5 people.

It was very disappointing!!

Although there were some good flavours in the food, we were so let down with the microscopic serving size of each meal; especially for how much it cost!

We got the steamed Hainanese chicken as a main meal; it was so small, it wouldn’t have be enough to feed a cat. One of their specialties, the beef rendang, had only 5 scanty pieces in a shallow takeaway container; accompanied by a tiny flat disc of paper, which was supposed to be the Roti. And the other dishes, like the mixed skewers and laksa, were really poor in size too!

I would not recommend them, unless your Pappa’s rich or you’re dieting!

Pappa Rich is a Malaysian chain which provides a consistent meal. I check out their Chatswood restaurant recently. . I am a big fan of Malaysian food. Roti bread, curries, chili, rice, noodles and amazing flavours always excite my senses. Papparich is a Malaysian chain that provides an extensive menu and consistent food. The rating on zomato is 3.2/5 and is consistent with my experience.

The best dishes to try are the chicken laksa and the curry fish head noodle. Make sure you put the fried fish head on a separate dish so that the fish head stays crispy. The drinks are also pretty good but a pit pricey
Amys_food_adventures
First time visit to this popular place. Their franchises are popping up all over the joint. You tend to see long lines of people waiting for their turn.

To start we got some chickens skewers and for the mains i got the poached chicken, my partner got a stir fried dish (cant remember which exact one).

Once mains were finished it was a bit hard to get the attention of the waitress as we wanted to try their banana fritter! After a long wait we finally got to sample the deep fried banana with ice cream and it delicious!

I thought everything was ok but don't really see the hype!

Asian cookbooks lie. They lie through their teeth. Good, authentic Asian food is damn hard to recreate at home, not to mention the list of specialty ingredients that’s as long as your arm. As a Singaporean who cooks I know what I’m talking about. So whenever I feel a bit homesick and want some familiar food, I’m always faced with a quandary – the Southeast Asian food in Sydney simply cannot be compared to the experience of dining on street food (sometimes the risk of food poisoning is just what you need for a little evening excitement), but it’s still better than what I’ve got the energy to make at home. Then what?
Sweetandyummie
This place is fantastic for groups as they have a private room and you can book it. The food is always enjoyable and comes out very quickly. i love the roti canai and the chicken skin! Parking is rather tricky so try to park inside chatswood chase and walk over.

I have not back here for a while but enjoyed the section of dishes my group of eight persons had last night. What stood out was the Nasi Lemak, with the rice having just the right flavour of coconut milk cooked steam rice. I also gave a heads up to the condiments they served, authentic and yummy. Ais Kacang and Wat Tan Hor were okay but the were surpassed by the banana fritters and the Char Koay Teow. Interesting was the snack of deep fried chicken snacks, good with easy beers! The place was as expected crowded on a busy holiday night. The smoke form the grill was not really desired and the bathrooms could be better maintained. Service by staff was efficient and quick. I always liked the steamed Hainan chicken and the still delivered this time! I had been told about the undesired parboiling practice of their satay skewers but this did not occur this time around.
North Shore Nibbles
In short... This place is a great authentic Malaysian restaurant! Food is amazing, location is amazing, service is great! Prices are decent! Well worth a visit!

I love Papa Rich - probably my favourite restaurant in Chatswood. I prefer it over Mamak - but mainly because I am a wimp with spice and everything at Mamak burns. Papa Rich has never disappointed me and it is the place we take friends when they come to town. The Chicken Rice is just as good as what you would find in Singapore or KL!
Princess_Porky
Love this place but probably not as much as Mamak. I've had a few misses here. For the most part, their food is delicious though. The satay is good, their fried chicken is good and their biryani rice is excellent.
FoodArchitect
We find ourselves going to Chatswood Paparich over other Papariches, as this one is more consistent with their dishes and the roti's taste fresher. Being a noodle person, I always go for their laksa and occasionally find myself going for their steamed rice chicken dish. Their Tea Tarik is nice, although I prefer Mamak's ones. Nice chilling music in the background makes a relaxing place to go to, especially for family (especially since there's a kids playground, which our nephew loves). A great variety of food here so there's always something for everyone. I've been to Malaysia and yeah, it's not completely authentic but it's not meant to be. But the food tastes great in it's own right. Never had a bad experience here - only criticism is that dishes come out late sometimes.
Carmella @ Easy Food Hacks
PapparRich is popular; our first visit to the Chatswood branch (the closest to us) required a wait in a queue. We only got a table after 15 minutes because there was two of us, larger groups had to cool their feet for longer. The ordering system at PappaRich consists of a order chit and a electronic button on the cutlery tray. Once you have made your selections on the chit, you summon a staff member with the button who whips it away and returns with a printed receipt. As each dish is brought the to the table, the server marks it off the receipt. Clever.

We had to try the famous deep-fried chicken skin snack ($6). This could have been great, but on the day, the morsels were overcooked, they tasted dry and burnt.

The wat tan hor (rice noodles in gravy) came in a generous size. Could have done with more protein, but overall this was quite tasty. The noodles had a good bite, the gravy was thick and flavoursome.

The roti canai was soft and chewy, but didn’t have the crisp and fluffiness that the Mamak version has. The dhal was also pretty ordinary.

The nasi lemak with curry chicken and prawn sambal was rather toned down in flavour. BL felt the sambal was lacking in real spice kick.

I had the open sesame, a dessert/drink made with black sesame powder and soy milk topped with a large scoop of black sesame ice-cream. This was one tasty, decadent treat.

Our second visit was for a quick early meal before the movie, and decided to try several other dishes. At 5pm on a Saturday, there was no queue, but there was enough early diners for a brisk business.

The crispy chicken biryani is a smorgasboard of chicken, deep-fried eggplant and prawns with sambal sauce. It was tricky eating the chicken without a knife; I think the idea might have been to use your fingers. The biryani rice was flavoursome but dry. Adding sambal sauce to the rice helped.

I liked their satay. Good flavour, nicely grilled. The peanut sauce was rich and had a good chunky texture.

The ice kacang (ABC) was such an epic fail, no Malaysians would call this monstrosity our own. It bore scant resemblance to the photo in the menu; the ice was hard, the cin cau (grass jelly) were in too-large chunks, there was too much grenadine syrup, whole peanuts (West Malaysians use crumbed peanuts, East Malaysians do not use peanuts) and raisins. Seriously. No. Malaysians never put raisins in ice kacang, and the taste clashed with the other ingredients.

I have to admit I’m confused why PappaRich is so popular, and I think it’s more to do with comfort and convenience (branches are opened throughout the day, and there are a lot of menu options). Yes, there are more authentic versions (there is a Mamak branch in Chatswood, and Ipoh Club has just opened at the Chatswood RSL), but PappaRich is the closest to a comfortable restaurant experience than a hawker store fit out. I would come back for wat tan hor, satay and their extensive drinks menu, and skip the rest.

Tasty and inexpensive curry laksa. The seafood one had prawns and mussels, would've liked some more variety but perhaps that is not 'traditional'. Service is quick and staff are friendly. Given the location is a little bit away from the main shops and restaurants there wasn't a wait to be seated for a Saturday night.

all the vegetarian dishes are marked which is quite helpful. not as flavoursome as some of the other Malay joints around town but nice enough for a quick weeknight dinner

Sunday at 7pm, seated within minutes, watched them meticulously and discreetly clean a table for us, even sweeping underneath it.

Waitress explained the system clearly, we ordered Roti with Curry chicken, a steamed chicken noodle dish and another curry chicken with rice, sambal and anchovies dish. We were told that Roti would take 15 minutes, which was fine. The curry chicken and rice came out within 3 minutes of ordering, piping hot and fresh, very delicious.

The soy sauce chicken noodle dish was a bit plain for our taste but arrived as we finished our first dish and was also fresh and well prepared.

The roti were amazing, super hot, the same curry chicken was also great, very tender. The sambal was really nice - well flavoured, not just spicy.

A meal for two people; 4 dishes, and one soft drink came to just under $70. All mains are big enough to feed a single person easily, and are around $14 mostly.

We were in and out in 45 minutes, which we like. There were larger groups of people taking their time, the staff don't rush you.

Good food as expected from Papparich restaurants. Came here on a Friday night and long line, but wait wasn't too long.

Service was good, but sometimes staff busy and can't come until you press bell for second time.

Drinks are nice, and food was served in reasonable time.

Only problem is I wish they offer more bread with their curry dishes.

Just not very good. I have been here twice. It's just not that good. Most recently I ordered roti (thinking it is like an entre/starter?) and a main. Was told the roti would be 15 mins, which was fine except my main came out after 5 mins. When I questioned why my main came before the roti, I was told I had been informed my roti would be 15 mins. But I was not informed that my main would come out before it though! That's just bad communication. Also the samabal prawns on my plate were cold (but not meant to be) and the curry chicken was hot. Gross hot/not hot combo on my plate. Food it's self just isn't that good, you can get better Malay food elsewhere. Roti was nothing special (not fluffy, torn, rough looking) . My advice, just don't bother. There are soooo many better places to eat in Chatswood eg. Golden Bo, Shanghai Stories, Mamak etc.

It was a big joke where you are charge for sambal chilli and cut chilli. Dont bother going there as there a lots of others malaysia cruisine in chatswood now where they cook better and more reasonable price and free CHILLI.

Idiot Manager. Ordered beef rendang and chicken with biryani rice. Order came within 5 minutes (not a good sign as this is a restaurant, not a fast food chain). Rice came with plastic! Complained to the manager and he asked me what he can do for me, I requested for a different kind of rice. He said he can't do that because they have to cook it and my rice is 'steamed' rice and that if I wanted a different kind of rice, I had to pay for it. This guy is an idiot. Why should I pay for a different kind of rice, in fact, I shouldn't be paying for my meal because it had plastic in the rice! Never going back, too overrated. Manager is incompetent.

Anyways, after the takoyaki snack and frivolous waffle machine buying we headed to PappaRich. I wasn’t familiar with the very large Malaysian restaurant that has an interesting way of ordering – you write down your order on a checklist, press the button to call a server to your table and they appear seemingly out of nowhere to collect your order...

As someone who steers well clear of chilli, the fiery dishes of the Indian-influenced Malaysian cuisine can be somewhat intimidating. On this particular Saturday afternoon, however, I was prepared to roll up my sleeves and

I've got a sudden craving for some spicy curry after finishing a long day of class, and a quick check of Mamak's menu (bad experience there, might blog it later) confirmed I didn't like whatever they had to offer. PappaRich it is! This would be my 4th time coming back here! And despite their terrible rating and reviews on Urbanspoon (the comments are hilarious incase anyone wants to go read it), each time I've been here it's been really pleasant and food has been yummy. This time was no different. We ordered the Curry Chicken Laksa, where you can choose the type of noodle you want, and the Nesi Lemak with Curry Chicken. The roti made at Pappa Rich was excellent, achieving a perfect blend of textures. There were some lightly charred bits on the surface which gave it more depth of flavour

Lunch time is packed, lucky to arrive just after noon to get a seat without a reservation. The place has a good vibe, a bit more posh than others its category. In my opinion, the menu is reasonably priced but do not expect a waiter to take your order. A step up from a food court, you write down your order yourself using reference codes. If you're the one placing the order beware, just one letter misplaced and you'll have an unhappy diner. Push the buzzer, and you hand it your form and hope for the best. Nah just kidding. Food arrived swiftly. Everything arrived at the same time(table of 5). Big portions are ideal for sharing. Nasi Goreng was full of flavour. The cabbage added a subtle crunch that was unusual but gave the rice more body. Laksa was ordinary, probably not the best. Nasi Lemak was faultless. Their sambal is well balanced and not overpowering even in big doses. Conclusion Can't really g

We opted for some classic dishes – the char kway teoh, hainanese chicken rice and roti canai with chicken curry. The char kway teoh was very disappointing, as the dish did not use the classic thick rice noodles but included a thinner variety instead, and did not have the ‘burned wok’ flavour that makes a good char kway teoh.

Little Eats Sydney
The popular PappaRich Malaysian restaurant chain is taking Sydney by storm and the Chatswood branch is just made for families. Think cheap and tasty food, a dedicated kids playroom and friendly service.

PappaRich restaurants are fun and friendly, however they are also run with almost military precision! Service is quick and efficient and the food is delicious. You can expect queues at busy times, so arrive early if you can. Ordering is actually a bit of fun for newbies! You look through the photos on the impressive menu, write your choices on an order form and then press the little buzzer on the table. You may then sit for a while whilst the buzzer plays a little tune before your order form is whisked away by a waiter. It wasn’t more than 5-10 minutes before our food started flowing. There is no kids menu, however the cheap prices and huge variety of food means you will find something for everyone.

Pappa Char Koay Teow (AUD 12.50), this is wok-fried flat noodles with prawns, egg, and bean sprout.. The taste just so-so.. The flavor not as rich as the char kwe tweo in SG or Jakarta, but the plus point is the prawns is tasty and fresh..

Overall PappaRich is a pretty good Malaysian restaurant which offers a wide variety of quality food. The menu offers some excellent options which are well priced for the large sized portions. It does get really busy during lunch and dinner so be prepared to wait a few minutes, especially if you have a bigger group. The current urbanspoon rating isn't indicative of how good this place is, if you are ever in Chatswood then give it a try for yourself before judging!
Just Food No Words
It’s a bit of a walk from Chatswood station but it’s a nice place to go with friends for some good Malaysian food. It’s not too pricey, maybe except for the tiny dimsim’s with cost $4.90 each for 3 tiny pieces, but the rest of the menu is mostly decently priced.

Today we are here for mainly singaporean style food. The place is quite spacious. Lots of room. The interior is fitted out really well. And I’m glad, there isn’t a queue, which is pretty awesome.

by Isaac (@iFat23) on Jul 27, 2014 • 11:54 am No Comments Long time readers will know that I’m not immune to slipping in the occasional Survivor reference. Full disclosure: It’s one of my favourite television shows of all time. Not just my favourite reality show, but one of my favourite shows period. It’s now the only reality show I watch and the only one I enjoy. This wasn’t always the case. Let me take you back to the 19th of July 2009. This will forever be remembered as the day I threw my remote at my TV (the 20th of July is remembered as the day I had to awkwardly explain to my parents why we needed a new TV). It was the season finale of the first season of Masterchef Australia which pitted Poh Ling Yeow vs. Julie Goodwin. Poh was my absolute favourite and the fact that she made Hainanese chicken rice in the finale just solidified my spot as the driver of the Poh bandwagon. Alas, she lost the finale and one Samsung remote control was hurled across the room. I never thought I’d get

...PappaRich is the arch-rival to Mamak. They are polar opposites in the best way possible: they are on opposite ends of Chatswood, Mamak has a few branches in Sydney whilst PappaRich has one, PappaRich’s menu is extensive compared to Mamak’s.

Went to Papparich for dinner tonight, brought Bub along though he already has dinner. Our second time here, quite like the deco, lots of wood and bricks, it is quite a large restaurant considering it being in Chatswood. Monday chilly night, and still we had to wait around 20 min for a table around 7:30pm, luckily there’s a large wait area so it wasn’t too bad. There’s also a play area for kids, suitable for bringing your Bub along. So we place our own order when ready, (it’s on the box on the table where cutleries are put) i got a Bandung soya, which is a rosé soya milk tea, not bad at all, even Bub liked it. Hubby ordered a kopi-o, and quite enjoyed it too. So today I ordered the hai nan chicken rice again since I didnt feel like anything else, pretty consistent in taste from last time. Soft chicken, rice a bit dry, soup too salty. ok maybe last time was better, and we were really really Hungry tonight Hubby ordered a hai nan fried chicken which he likes too, a bit on the spicy for th

All this food for under 100 bucks! A bargain considering the portion size and quality of the food.

I don't know what others have had as I've read some not so good reviews but we sure enjoyed ourselves and would definitely visit again. Too bad there isn't a store in the city or I'll be there a lot.

The wait is definitely worth it as this is Malaysian food at its finest in Sydney.

Okay…so having lunch with Poh meant it was an obligation to bring our appetite along and I am certainly glad that I did. The first dish that came out to us hungry food bloggers was the Pappa deep fried chicken skin. To my surprise, this was my very first time experiencing those crunchy skins...

For two people we were reasonably full but we honestly couldn’t walk out of the restaurant without having to try their famous Hainan Toasted Bread with Butter & Kaya ($4.50). Their bread needs no introduction; it’s soft and fluffy but crispy for toasty lovers and mingles so well with a spread of butter and kaya jam. Kaya is a coconut jam made from coconut milk, chicken or duck eggs and then flavoured by pandan leaf then sweetened with sugar. This is why bread, butter and Kaya combine so well together.

Pappa Rich Malaysian food is a fusion between Chinese and Indian with flings to Japan and Singapore. There's been quite a bit of hype about this restaurant which has just opened in Chatswood, with mixed reviews. However every night there's a queue, so it can't be that bad...right? Which leads me to the first thing. The queue. If there is a queue the food better be worth it. Couldn't we just wait inside? Apparently not. Oh, and by the way there's a $200 reservation fee to reserve seats. We didn't have to wait long but the coordination of the line was messy. Being a large restaurant it was clear that they had the bums on seats mentality. In the line they give you menus and to order you write your numbers on a sheet of paper which you give to a waiter. This was quite efficient but will take a bit of getting used to. I'd rather have the personal "hi, may I take your order" service but that's just me. The service is great, efficient and they know their stuff. The food, however, is mixed. Th

Overall, the place was quite good- prices were reasonable and the food was pretty good, will probably be back next time I'm in Chatswood! :)
I'm Still Hungry
Ok, here’s the thing. These fried chicken skins are so crunchy, it’s like eating chips. I could not help myself – before I realised it, I had downed half the plate. I’m sure I got angry looks but whatever – I was in chicken heaven.

The real magic was when I dipped a piece into the sweet chilli sauce. I don’t know how, but instantly, I was confidently able to declare “this is better than KFC”.
A Foodie's Joy
PappaRich is a Malaysian group of restaurants that first started in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2005. Over time it has become a very successful business and has taken off like a rocket in Australia. In Australia, they started in Melbourne (reputedly populated with more Malaysians than any other major city in Australia) which now has up to 5 outlets and in April they wet their feet in Sydney by opening up an outlet in Chatswood. Stating that it has been a successful opening in Chatswood is an understatement. The queues have been long and sometimes people have had to wait for up to 45 minutes to an hour to get a table. So for my first venture to the Chatswood outlet, my friend CW and I decided to get there right smack at the opening time of 11.00 am on a Saturday. Even then, there were about 10 people ahead of me waiting for the doors to open. Goodness!!! Joining us were CW's 2 daughters and 3 of her ex classmates from Malaysia. We were all hungry and definitely wanting to try out differen

Overall, I rate PappaRich an 7.5 out of 10. The food was pretty consistent, and really good value with large servings for few dollars. The menu is much larger than the offerings at similar Sydney-based Malaysian establishments like Mamak, and offers more choice for discerning diners. Service was efficient, and despite the queue, we didn’t feel like we were being rushed out of the restaurant which is something that many Asian restaurants tend to do.
THEJUGERNAUTS
With a large selection of Malaysian eats on their menu – Papparich delivers. The food was traditional and tasted great. As mentioned, the Broadway store which is nearest to us has a constant lunch/dinner service queue and we’re not in the least surprised. Affordable Malaysian eats, good

PappaRich Group was first established at Malaysia in 2005, and not long ago the group opened its first outlet at Chatswood in Sydney. Bun and I headed there with a few dishes in our minds, and we mainly wanted to see how different it was to Mamak . When we got into the restaurant, the waitress explained to us on how to order. So pretty much you just write the codes corresponding to the dishes you wanted on this piece of paper, and also letting them know whether to have the dessert at same time or after meal. There's always a button on the table to call the staffs when you are ready to order or need any assistances. Rebena Melon First thing of the menu (as always) was the drink, and this particular drink has immediately caught my attention. I was totally drawn by the colour of the drink, and the floating fruits that came in very round shapes. Although it didn't really say what was included in this drink from the menu, but I could taste watermelon and perhaps Longan? There were few jelly

The food was delicious, I’ve never had a Asam Laksa before but I loved the aromatic thick soup with all its ingredients. The roti was crispy and personally preferred this over Mamak’s. The char koay teow proved that the restaurant has good ‘wok hei’'.

M and I had originally planned to go last night (Friday) but when we arrived at 6.30pm the line had an estimated wait time of around 90 minutes so we chose to go to korean barbeque at Goldmart. Tonight we went at 5pm and were seated straight away...
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
For the record the 70 metre queue moved quite quickly as people came inside, ate the tasty food on offer and left looking very satisfied. Every meal here is appetisingly presented and even though it's freshly made it arrives very quickly after you order.

The first PappaRich outlet was established in KL back in 2005. Today, they have over 70 outlets in Malaysia and in other countries, such as Singapore and more recently, Australia. When we first received word of them opening in Melbourne, we though, "Yea, about time." Fast forward to 2 months ago, they opened their first one here in Sydney, in the very Asian suburb of Chatswood. Normally, us typical KLites would associate PappaRich with the phrase "upscale mamak". It is like from high school or college mamak hangouts we graduate to uni and career world cafe hangouts. The food they provide is the common food fare available in hawker centres around the country but at a high price and in an air-conditioned and free wi-fi environment. Most of the time, we only order drinks, especially the traditional Hainanese coffee and tea, that goes down well with the traditional Hainanese bread with kaya and butter. With all the hype, we decided to wait for a bit to avoid

The kopi tiam of old Malaya has been revitalised into a modern setting, with dark brown panel surroundings, Australian sourced ingredients for classic dishes from street and home of another era, another place and another cuisine. As immigration from Malaysia continues to flow into the Antipodes, the soul food of childhood and family for many of these arrivals are represented and repackaged for another generation. Does this symbolise the infusion of more Asia into a continental island that is so close geographically and yet have remained for most years apart, culturally and politically? Australia offers a fresh start for the adventurous, disenfranchised and business dynamic from other lands - and in return it is enriched with new thoughts, new cuisines and new colours. South Indian rotis, Cantonese noodles, Straits Chinese snacks, Eurasian cakes, Malay satay sticks, Indonesian nasi lemak , Western influenced breads, Hainan chicken rice and amazing drink combinations ( Ribena and wate
Excuse Me Waiter
The menu at PappaRich is extensive for a Malaysian restaurant encompassing pretty much every popular dish of the cuisine, so there’s definitely something for everyone. The rice dishes were better than the noodle dishes that we tried, but overall there’s many more hits than misses here. Combine all this with very affordable pricing and you have yourself a winner for family dining in the heart of Chatswood – it’s no wonder there’s still crazy queues on the weekends!
Constant Diner
I didn't mind that there wasn't much variety on the menu had the food turned out to be fabulous. But the food was really quite average. I had the Hainan chicken which I found to be a bit bland and it was missing my favourite ginger sauce! Everyone else found their dishes to be OK.

I celebrate the opening of Pappa Rich in Parramatta (yay for another Malaysian food option in my ‘hood..and just another food option in general) by heading over to Chatswood (as you do) for an epic Malaysian feast. Whilst I’m all about supporting the business in my suburb the lure of meeting Pappa Rich’s newest (and first) ambassador, Poh (aka Poh from Masterchef) was too hard to resist. Poh is as lovely in real life as she has always appeared on TV. Her energy and bubbly nature are infectious as is her love for Malaysian food (she was still fully devouring the banquet as "her people" were trying to drag her off to the airport for the flight home - love a gal who loves her food as much as I do)! And here's Poh and I...we're totally BFFs now! Our feast kicks off with LOADS of different dishes that include Roti Canai – a flatbread that is quite theatrical in the making with the dough being tossed and spun like a circus trick to achieve its soft, fluffy texture.
