Always a great feed, l get excited whenever l know I'm going there for dinner.
The beef cheeks melt in your mouth, the flavours that hit you when you take a bite of the duck, the soft shell crab yummo hmmmm that's not all, the shared dessert plate is a sight in itself with the tastes to back it up.
The beautiful Tasmanian Riesling is delicious, just do yourself a favour and experience this gastronomic delight.
I'm not a cocktail girl but the others at the table were groaning with delight so that's a great sign, they look delicious.
A definite go to restaurant.
Don't forget the $15 Noodle night on Sundays.
Great Local with perfect Asian fusion menu.
Staff were great. Very reasonable prices.
Would highly recommend.
Will be back.
Had the 24 Hour braised beef rendang. Fantastic meal eaten in the beer garden. Great service, excellent food warm atmosphere.
Love this place. From the food to the cocktails to the service it is amazing. City quality close to home.
Would love it if you brought back the chef's choice option as I can never decide
The most amazing food, service and atmosphere!!! I was in total food heaven here!!! So well done, highly recommend for any occasion!! Can't wait to go back.
Relaxed atmosphere, friendly attentive staff, delicious food and the blow torched salmon and popcorn shrimp were divine

Great food, great vibe, loved it. Imagine it can get a bit loud on busy nights, but who cares when the foods great and the wines flowing!! :)
Can't fault.. LOVED the food, atmosphere, music but most of all the cocktails ☺ highly recommend!
Amazing!!! Can not fault this place- cocktails were suburb and the massaman curry and pork belly were divine! We will be back and hopefully there won't be too long a wait because this place is about to get super busy, no doubt about it.
Food amazing. Waitress divine and helpful. Bit expensive. Didn't get fish cake promised in noodle dish. Overall great experience
The food is a amazing, loved loved, loved the Salmon and the Rendang melt in your mouth everything amazing
 will not disappoint
Awesome food, with some great tunes playing in the background. Tried not to get distracted by the projector but failed
First time at this restaurant and we got a table at the back in the garden which had a beautiful atmosphere with artistic murals and night lights! Service was great and attentive.
We shared many plates and my favourite would have to be the chicken dumplings the flavours were amazing while the dumpling skin was so light and melted in your mouth. The cocktails were good too.
Overall a great first time. Will definitely be back! Bonus is you can use your entertainment voucher if you have one!
Thank you!
Great modern Asian restaurant tucked away in the side streets of Cheltenham
We were very surprised at how quickly the meals came out especially considering they had a function out the back
The food was tasty, their menu is more set up for sharing so they gave a lot of small dishes which I didn’t mind
We’ll definitely be back
Delightful place to grab a quick quality feed. We had the chicken Sarah’s (excellent and big!), roti (good), beef rendang (excellent), gyoza (good), And a very good refreshing salad. Second time there and will be back to try more items.
What a lovely little place tucked away in Cheltenham. Its a very funky melbourne vibes. Well styled and comfortable. Staff were lovely and attentive the menu had a few dishes we could order reasonable priced. Dishes were good but in my option flavour could have been a little better
Celebrated my birthday here with a group of 10, been here one other time with a similar group number- both times I’ve experienced great service and great food! The staff are very attentive and accommodating, all my friends and I loved everything we ordered, would recommend sharing your dishes as the mains are quite filling! Was also pleasantly surprised by the dessert share plate as well. Definitely coming back again when I can :)
Great little fusion restaurant in Cheltenham. The food was fantastic, very tasty and portion size was good. The satay chicken skewers were yum and the Nasi Goreng was up there with the best I’ve had. Many reviews about noise levels are bad, look it is loud but not intolerable. Will def go back 👍🏼
Enjoyed our dining experience here Friday evening, group of 19. I had the Beef Rendang, the meat was very tender & also sauce was lovely 👌 !! Alot of entrees shared, lots of wine consumed, great service & good vibe ... Ty guys, will return ... Paula
Came here with my partner for a late night meal.
We ordered a few different dishes to share.
The food was great and the wine was delicious!
Great environment with a funky, relaxed feel to the place made it a great night out.
Great work guys! Delicious!
Uber delivery - all food was yummy and piping hot.
Chicken wings were SUPER hot it was fantastic.
Fish in the curry was well cooked, source was a bit rich but that’s just my taste.
I would order again
What more could I say but It was FANTASTIC!! The food was so fresh and traditional which made it more delicious. The service was great and very friendly / helpful. Went here with three friends and we all agreed that we would definitely be back. I ordered the chicken poke bowl same with another friend and my two other friends ordered the ramen and spring rolls , in which they were pleased with. The desserts were amazing, beautifully decorated and very delicious flavours. Highly recommend, i will be back to try more things on the menu for sure!!
Food is absolutley delicious. We contemplated ordering more just because even though we we had had enough. Service could do with some improvement but a winner nonetheless. An absolute hidden gem.
The food was very well prepared, tasty and good portion. Reasonable wine/drink list. But it can get a little noisy late in the night. A great find in Cheltenham.
The food was fantastic. We bought about 10 different dishes and was not let down by any of them. $10 'handles' (400ml) of Kirin on tap went down way too nicely also. Minor grumbles about portion size, which seems to be a theme in recent reviews. I do agree, you are paying over the odds for not a great quantity return, but it's delish so you cop it. It's also extremely noisey inside. When we booked we were warned that the noise was not everyone's cup of sake, and it is a shame that the noise is so overwhelming. I would hate to come on a busy Friday or Saturday night. You simply wouldn't hear conversations. We sat out the back after putting up with the noise no longer. Being a warm night it was great, but Melbourne being Melbourne means the outside, less noisey option isn't going to be available. All in all a great feed with good service.
I ordered a lot of food, it was a while ago but the asian fusion food was amazing and so close for me to walk. Here is all the food in the photo can't exactly remember what was eaten but I remembered it was amazing.
Food was great, service was great too, however restaurant was very loud and had to scream to hear each other, and food is a bit slow.
Overall everything was very good, recommended.
Ive had lots of good food here, the stand out was the whole fried snapper. It is a bit exy but i thoroughly enjoyed my food and think this place deserves a higher rank. The decor is pretty nice
This place is a local revelation. Everything we ate was delicious - corn, pork belly, pepper squid and the most amazing beef rendang. Some great noodle dishes and curries which we did not have room to try. Great cocktail menu too.
Thoroughly delicious and excellent quality dishes, well presented in an laid back, urban-chic environment. Staff were quite attentive. Drinks menu that will please most if not all tastes. Only negative is the internal lighting which is a bit too dim once it's dark outside.
An asset to Cheltenham's eating scene. Definitely worth a visit.
We had their special chicken curry katsu and raw salmon poke for dinner with a small jug of warm sake. The katsu chicken was light and perfectly done; the curry sauce was very good but wished the rice was a bit more to soak up those yummy sauce. Raw salmon poke was light, fresh and tasty. We had a very good dining experience tonight. Service was quick, friendly and hospitable. Will definitely go back there again
Energetic, vibrant local serving very tasting Asian tapas with interesting drinks list. Friendly staff support the offering - drinks service a little slow on a Saturday evening but highly recommend!
Best Asian fusion I can remember ever having! Everything we ordered was delicious, portions were generous yet everything we ate kept us wanting more because it was all so good! 🤤 Cocktails were delicious and the plum wine- wow! The dessert board was the perfect way to finish up a lovely meal and the recently opened back area was a gorgeous place to sit on a warm night. Really friendly, attentive and accommodating staff. Couldn't recommend more!
was here today for lunch the food was amazing i will definitely be back.
food arrived and smelled delicious and the flavours were awesome.
will be recommending it to our friends
Great spot for a meal and an alcoholic Beveridge if you don't want to have to drive into town or south Yarra being from the bayside suburbs. Food was very tasty and service was great.
Last night we had a very enjoyable experience at this restaurant. We've been here a few times previously but had not been back for about nine months and we were again satisfied with the consistently great service and food. We could not fault anything!
The waitress explained the new additions to the menu since our last visit and made some great recommendations, which were the Japanese Takoyaki (minced octopus balls) and the Tempura Popcorn Shrimp. Yum!! The serving sizes were generous too.
The main dish we ate of the Slow Roast Beef Cheek Rendang was perfection! So tender and full of flavour, and paired with the roti was very filling. We finished with the Papaya salad which tasted fresh and delicious.
We are looking forward to returning again soon for when they open the courtyard bar. Definitely the best restaurant in Cheltenham.
I'm not a huge fan of Japanese but I loved it here. We ordered a few starters. Edamame, gyoza and the fried chicken. Then shared the beef cheek rendang which I would eat every day for the rest of my life. The sauce was to die for, so we naturally had to order roti bread to soak the rest of it up.
Highly recommend.
Very enjoyable experience, looking forward to my next visit 👍🏻
The service was just about perfect with a trendy atmosphere, chill music, clean and tidy.
Food was really spot on as well came out fast and was high quality. Well presented and good portion sizing.
We had the best night here last night. The service was great, very friendly helpful staff. We selected a range of dishes and enjoyed everything particularly the spiced potato murtabak. There was a good selection of wine by the glass and the cocktails looked great although we did not try one. We then decided to share dessert and it turned out to be the highlight of the meal. We chose the chocolate fondant tart and were sorry we didn't get one each. Highly recommended for a great meal in suburban Melbourne.
Brilliant - highly recommend. Interesting fresh flavours and dishes of assorted sizes so you can structure your meal however works for you. Really enjoyed the teriyaki chicken and the duck, although everything we tried was good. Service was standout - efficient and friendly. Bar staff were happy to cater to specific preferences/requests. We were the last there and didn't feel at all rushed to leave. I will definitely be back to try the plum wine!
Delicious food, great staff and relaxed surroundings. A true inner city experience out in Cheltenham. Happy days :) I will definitely be back.
Actually we wanted to give this restaurant 3.3 rating. There are both positive and negatives. Like some of the other reviews have said, the noise level in this restaurant is quite high. The noise from everyone chatting seems to bounce off the walls and is quite loud. Also the lighting is so dim we had trouble reading the menu. Granted we both need reading glasses but still...
On the positive side it's very nicely decorated and the staff are all very friendly. The food came out in a timely fashion and we were pretty happy with the portion sizes for both entrée and main.
Entrée - we started with the scallops. There were four scallops and they came served on the shell. They had a little bit of spice but very well done. Next was the popcorn shrimp. This serving size was a bit more generous, The batter was light and not greasy and the shrimp was tender and cooked well
Mains - I had the beef cheeks which were beautifully cooked and served in a really beautiful sauce which was full of flavor. However, that was all that was served, there were no vegetables. My husband had the chicken and prawn udon noodles. This did come with vegetables in it however he was left wanting a bit more chicken and prawn.
There are generally two things you will see in my reviews: what beer I had with dinner or how I rate the coffee. Tonight I had one of my favorite beers, Doss Blockos. It's a pale ale from a little brewery in Praran. I first had this beer in the restaurant next-door owned by the same owners called the Garden of Good and Evil. But that's another review.
After my second visit here, I was again impressed. Living in Melbourne's CBD I am spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out. Meeting my mother for dinner, who lives in Dingley, until recently it has been quite a chore to find somewhere decent to eat. The suburbs aren't exactly littered with great restaurants. We stumbled across Hattori Hanzo quite accidentally one night after going to the cinemas around the corner at Southland. This time back we were pleasantly surprised to find a new menu and even more tasty dishes to explore. The staff are always friendly and really helpful with the menu. My new favourite is the teriyaki chicken and I love the slow cooked beef cheek rendang. I was also happy to see they now stock my fav beer Stone & Wood pacific ale!! We didn't need dessert but as soon as we saw dessert boards coming out of the kitchen we thought it would be rude not to. It was a selection of four desserts and a trio of sorbet. Loved the pear creme brûlée and the Japanese chef even brought it out himself (not sure if this a regular occurrence but it was a nice memorable touch). Definitely be back and recommend it to all in the suburbs!!
Our first time here. The waitress was attentive and knew the menu well. The three of us shared entrees and a couple of desserts. Our favourites were the panko crumbed oysters, the tonkatsu bao, the gyoza sticks and the popcorn shrimp. We will be back. Great neighbourhood restaurant.
Great addition to the neighbourhood, stopped by for dinner on Saturday night and the place was full. Good service and funky fit out. We opted for the $49 can't decide chefs special, delicious entrees and tasty mains. We were satisfied and will come back
Hattori Hanzo has an energy that resembles a bustling restaurant in the city (not too dissimilar to Lucy Lui and Chin Chin). The vibe in the room is great, yes it's noisy (but if you want a quiet room to chat perhaps host your own dinner party in the comfort of your own home), the food can at times be on the spicy side (the spicy poached prawns are delish but not for the faint hearted), the cocktails are unique and packed with flavour and finesse (I had the 'Sofie Fatale' it was a taste of Thailand and then tried the 'Fruit Ninja' which tasted like this cocktail I had in Bali so fruity and came out flaming!!). The menu is large and is easy to navigate to suit your needs, with sections like 'Word on the Street' for small share plates, we had the Vietnamese Beef Skewers which were barbequed to perfection and the Spicy Poached Prawns which packed a punch. After finishing those we were feeling like something a bit more substantial before we head out to an engagement party where you know you won't get much food. The lovely waitress suggested we try one of Hattori's signature dishes the Pan Fried Snapper... WOW! Such a wonderful dish with black pepper, fried shallots and chilli, paired well with the papaya salad! It was beautiful but we still needed to try a curry, (who goes to an asian restaurant and doesn't order a curry?) the table next to us were having the chef's banquet and the aromas from the Slow Roast Beef Cheek Rendang was all I could smell. They told us it was delicious so we ordered that with Roti Bread. The coconut and tender beef went so well with the malaysian sauce. The best one I've had at any restaurant I've been to in the city, (including Chin Chin and Hawker Hall). While we were enjoying the curry we ordered a Tempranillo Grenache which worked perfectly with the red meat. Great wine list they have and some interesting beers I'd like to come back and try on a hot day. From start to finish the experience was professional, efficient and friendly, it was a Saturday night and it was pumping but still they made us feel important and didn't rush us out the door. Definitely will be back!! Thanks for a great night.
Amazing food. This place converted me to an Asian food lover and I eat there all the time. Friendly staff who are always very helpful. The beef tataki and duck curry are two big favourites bursting with flavour and colour. Great atmosphere and a perfect place for a delicious and laid back dinner.
Very impressed with our recent trip to Hattori Hanzo. The wife and I have been meaning to swing by for some time now and we will definitely be returning. Greeted by friendly and welcoming staff who were attentive and helpful throughout the experience. An impeccable cocktail list resulted in a great start to our meal. We begun with the beef tataki and kingfish ceviche which were beautifully fresh and the crispy chicken wings, also fantastic. We shared the pan fried snapper for our main and it was beautifully cooked piece of aquatic meat and went well with some wok tossed greens and roti bread. My wife has a peanut allergy so we were pleasantly surprised when told the menu was peanut free! finished off with a mango pannacotta that was divine and creamy. All in all a great experience and we will definitely be back for more.
Wonderful decor and atmosphere but maybe a little to loud (lots of hard surfaces). The meal was excellent, and absolute treat in the heart of Cheltenham. The service was excellent, even when the restaurant was very full. The food was fresh, wonderfully presented and reasonably priced.
Pleasant surprise. Friends took us there not knowing to much about this place. They had a good drink selection, ended up having a nice Riesling. Couldn't decide on what to eat and choose the chefs selection. Plenty of food. Good flavors. The only let down was the Korean chicken. Not good. Service pretty good, attentive and welcoming. However it was a Sunday night, not too busy.
For $50 a head for a set menu, you can't go wrong! It included an appetizer, 3 entrees (spicy prawns, Chilli raw meat and tofu spring rolls) and 2 mains (@chicken stir fry and Beef Rendang) The wait staff were friendly, attentive and were able to recommend some amazing cocktails. The Kyoto Mojito and Hattori Hanzo cocktails were absolutely delicious!
Love this place. Delicious exciting and original food with a very nice atmosphere. Great service from entering and waiting for a table until we left after the meal. The matcha green sour was the best cocktail I've had for a long time.
The food arrives very quickly and is stunning. The servings are generous, the sauces are delicious and spicy, with the right amount of heat to complement rather than overwhelm. The duck is presented as a whole leg and thigh, but is so tender that the provided serving spoon easily divides it into bite-size portions suitable for eating with chopsticks. Chopsticks are sufficient to dissect the crab, which is perfectly cooked and presented. Somewhat surprisingly, the main ingredients, good as they are, do not provide the highlight – this accolade goes to the sauces, for which we order an extra serving of rice to soak up them up and ensure that none of the moreish flavours go to waste. The green papaya salad is an excellent accompaniment that deserves a better description than ‘side’, and the rice is perfectly cooked.
Complete surprise from all accounts. Modern and functional design; outstanding food (pork belly, soft shell crab wow) excellent value, great service. This is in my black book of secrets
Fabulous first experience at Hattori Hanzo for my birthday dinner. Everyone was lovely and welcoming, and our table was looked after extremely well. The waitress was so well informed about the menu, which was great to see, and was able to answer all of our queries. Our meals were all enjoyed, I'll definitely be back!
We were impressed with the set up and decor of the restaurant. It was a Tuesday night and the place was over half full.
We are vegetarians and there were a few things to choose from, I would of liked more.
The prices are a bit steep for what you actually get, we ordered a sweet potato yellow curry and there was one piece of sweet potato in there! A few pieces of taro and some zucchini strips. For $23/$24 it should have been loaded with veggies and some tofu! The flavour was really nice though.
The green papaya salad was covered in fish sauce and wouldn't order that again. The DIY tofu rolls were yummy but again for $15 you would expect more than 5 pieces of tofu, 5 strips of lettuce, some shredded carrot and herbs. Chuck some cucumber and fresh chili on the plate.
The cocktails were yummy but $18-$22 again a bit too much.
On a very positive note the almond satay was delish!!!
Maybe if you eat meat it would be worth a visit, as a vegetarian I enjoyed my meal but would only visit again for someone (else's) birthday or celebration.
AMAZING food, full on flavours, I was surprised how tasty everything was, its nothing like any other Asian restaurant around, will definitely go to again. The staff where very knowledgeable and helpful explaining dishes and very friendly.Thank you for the tastiest meal out I have had for ages
Hattori Hanzo, I am told is named after the man who made the swords in Kill Bill…. Not the sauce! When we get to Hattori Hanzo it is really busy, a write up in The Age will do that for you. It is also incredibly loud, I am not being an old lady about this! The acoustics are bouncing everyone’s chatter around the room and it is deafening hence I thought Hattori made the sauce in Kill Bill… we are in a restaurant after all!! It did calm down a bit to a nice hum after a few of the tables left and you could even hear the music playing towards the end of the night.. but enough about that!
Called in on a Saturday night after being advised that only bookings made for 6 or more. Upon arrival staff informed us that there were a few in front of us and would contact us by phone when table free. Luckily only had to 15 mins. Had a couple great cocktails whilst waiting, with the Charlie Brown packing a punch. Once seated, we ordered the poached prawns, papaya salad and pork belly. We were warned that the prawns was very spicy. Waitress asked if we wanted prawns first. Only waited a short time for prawns and I would have to say they would not be for the faint hearted. Very spicy but also very tasty with the prawns being poached to perfection. My only gripe would be that there were only 5 and I would like to see 6 on the plate. Unfortunately we had to wait for an hour for the other 2 dishes. I would probably order everything to come out together next time. The pork belly with caramel chilli sauce was amazing but I could not detect chilli at all. The papaya salad was ok but I think the dressing was a bit out of balance and perhaps needed some tamarind and more lime. Overall, a great meal and can't wait to try other things on the menu. Diners tip: get there early on a Saturday night and ask for everything to come out at the same time
Really loved this place, or more specifically, the wonderful food. Seriously good flavours and presentation of the dishes. Modern fit-out, service great however a small comment I would make is why cutlery and not chopsticks?
Not understanding this concept in an Asian Hawker Style Restaurant!! Will remember to ask for chopsticks on our next visit!
Wow!!! Went here last night for dinner with friends and had a blast. Things to get are the beef tataki, kingfish ceviche, beef jerky, beef cheek randang, snapper I'm about to rattle the menu so I'm going to stop there. A couple bottles of sake amongst the table and some Asahi dark went down a treat. Nice rare Asian beer list as well. I really like that beef jerky though. I'm going to just order a massive plate of that and eat until I need to be wheeled out of the restaurant. The prawns we had reminded me of the first Chinese restaurant I went to in Brooklyn and I'd never found a place that could do it like they did until now. next time I'm going to go through a few of the cocktails and put away the rest of the menu. It's a very clever and fun restaurant and the staff were great. It was packed and loud and gave you the sense of "this is the place to be." I see lots of good things about this place and can't wait until I can go back.

This place is buzzing! The food is great, the service is amazing and the fit out is outstanding.... Can not to go back! Delicious - enough said!
A breath of fresh air for cheltenham, food solid, fun atmosphere, service lacking a little confidence. Minor details , great addition to the area, well done
Cheltenham'a answer to Chin Chin's? Maybe not just yet, but definitely a step in the right direction. Flavours were solid, staff friendly and the restaurant had a good vibe. Plus the Japanese take on the Espresso Martini had a lot of fans tonight. Overall a high recommendation. Oh and order the lamb shank massaman...
Hattori Hanzo is unbelievably delicious and delectable.
The whole vibe is something you can't buy. The entire restaurant is well planned and just works.
We had the Prawn and Fish tortellini and the crispy 7 spice shichimi chicken wing Street Eats and the Shared Menu slow cooked Beef cheek rendang with roasted coconut, steamed rice, roti and wok tossed Asian greens.
The flavours in the tortellini and the amazing sauce accompanying it are spot on.
The chicken wings are moist and very tasty.
The beef rendang arrive and the aroma transported you to another Country. The Asian greens had a delicious taste as did the rice and roti.
I had a beautiful well rounded and balanced Reisling and my husband had a Shiraz both crisp and a beautifully matched to our meals.
It was very busy especially for a Sunday night.
The management and staff were very efficient and attentive.
Their knowledge of the menu is excellent which is a great help in making the correct decision when ordering.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Hattori Hanzo to anyone wanting a top class meal in the suburbs.
Love love love and we can't wait to try more meals from this well rounded menu.
Hattori Hanzo has exceeded my expectations, and then some. With an interior fit out that could easily stand against any cool, chic city eatery, Hanzo is sure to be a raging success. The food was exciting and mouth-wateringly delicious.. We were transported to a hawker style Asian eating experience.
Emphasises on sharing, we had the spicy poached prawns and crispy chicken wings, the succulent chicken falling off the bone. We followed that with the beef cheek rendang, the beef cheek the hero, slow cooked to perfection, paired with some crispy coconut. Well rounded drinks list, with some interesting cocktails that we can't wait to try.
As we sat in the graffiti and reclaimed wood paradise, bathed in the glow from the Ninja movies playing in the background, no doubt an homage to the Hanzo namesake, we felt like we were in the heart of the CBD. Hanzo and its neighbour The Garden has elevated the stagnant sausage roll world of suburbia to new heights.
Hattori Hanzo is here to stay and we will definitely be back. Don't second guess, do yourself a favour and check it out.
Nice place quality food and would love to visit again. We traveled 45 kilometres from west to this place and enjoyed it. Food that we liked are shared below. Thanks to the chef and the team
The place was nice. Dishes are relatively small compared to the price, but the quality was nice. I'd describe it as more of a bar with Asian tappas than somewhere to go for dinner.
Delicious food, small serves, good atmosphere. Expensive for what it is tho
Not sure why people are writing bad reviews as this place is amazing! The wait staff were very friendly and professional and made the time to chat to us about origins of some of the dishes etc.
The food was suberb, absolutely delicious and a good size for the price!
My partner and I have nothing bad to say about this place, we left with full bellies and smiles on our faces.
Can't wait to come back with the family!
Do yourself a favour and order the shared plate for dessert and a cocktail! Yum!
