Review Laksa King Kitchen - Cheltenham

The chicken laksa was great. Tasty, hot enough, and perfect texture. I would have liked a bit more veggies, but it was good as it was too.

Very yummy! Had a good time, and the atmosphere is nice and relaxing! The robot servers was a joy to watch!

Delicious food with generous portions. Food came out pretty fast. Staff are friendly and attentive.

Laksa King is a fantastic chain of restaurants that does some amazing Malaysian food, especially the chicken curry and beef rendang. Quality flavors and pricing is perfect..Not difficult difficult to love them This one's inside the Southland shopping mall and it very easy to locate. Just a fascinating fact about this place, sometimes they serve tables with their orders through a robot.

The Best laksa in south east Melbourne. Giving 5 star šŸŒŸ rating for their best quality food with full of flavour & great service. Beautiful looking restaurant and amazing chefs.Thank you for your delicious dishesšŸ˜‹

Ordered the chicken ribs and rice and when it came out, you can tell the rice was old as it was so dry, clumped together and hard. It was so obvious and couldn't believe the chef dishing the plate would even let it pass. I advised the staff and was given coconut rice instead. You also charged 10% surcharge on Sunday but we have to scan the QR, look at the menu from our phone and pay from there too. And you have a robot serving the food. Really cheapens the whole eating out experience. Compared to Laksa King at Glen Waverley, the customer service and food standard here is really poor compared to them where you actually have a nice dining experience.

The laksa here is truly spectacular. The quality, flavours and quantity is up there with the best. I'm super surprised at the amount of chicken they put in the laksa, it's fantastic! Very good value. Staff are friendly also and the restaurant is very nicely decorated and spacious. šŸ¤©

Pleasantly surprised to find a Laksa King at Westfield Southland. Located in the row of restaurants by the movie theatre it was certainly a treat. Ordered the Laksa with fish fillets, Laksa with chicken and the dumplings noodles. The Laksa broth itself was very rich. A little too rich from the coconut but do ask for the sambal to cut through the richness and bring more spice to the flavour. It was perfect with the sambal. Fish fillet was more than expected and cooked to perfection. The dumpling broth however was over salty. Should have returned it but... Overall I hope they keep up the serving portions. Looking forward to try other dishes in the future.

This was not Hainan Chicken rice, the chicken is sooo dry and bland. Hainan Chicken should be very silly delicate texture. This one was like over boiled in water. Very disappointed. The laksa was good.
Jeanette La Fame
Won't say I had an inedible meal, but it was just not the tastiest chicken rice. The green ginger paste thing tasted strange and chicken rice had a peppery taste to it. Chilli was on the sweet side, would love more heat. Not your usual take on chicken rice that's for sure.

Not many great dining options in southland shopping centre so I was glad to see Laksa King. A nice Laksa soup was definelty worth it.

I never understand their opening hours here. Said in the website its opened until 9 and one time we arrived almost at 8 and the restaurant was closed. And other time I tried to call them and asked if they're open they said the last order is 8.30 and I arrived 8.15 they wouldnt let me dine in. Very confused. Ended up taking away char kuew teoy and laksa which was not bad

I have never been to a restaurant who does surcharge on DEBIT card. I paid using my saving account, still ask to pay extra. I do not think it is legal to do that.

Laksa King Kitchen, The taste of Malaysia, has outlets in four areas of Melbourne. Their signature dish, as the name suggests, is Laksa, a bowl of spicy noodle soup. We tried the seafood version and it was delicious. We also really enjoyed several entreƩ dishes as they arrived at the table piping hot and were very tasty. Zomato Rating 3.5

Nasi lemak is delicious and flavoursome. Portion is just right! Food took a while to be ready though. Beef laksa was also nice and had good portion meat. Received discount on an app to make it good value.

Enjoyed the curry laksa along with Satay sauce n Roti Chanai.

Decided to give this place a go as I have heard really good things about this place. I was thoroughly disappointed. I found that the laksa was too watered down and too creamy for my taste. I prefer my laksa to have stronger flavours of the spices used. Will not go back again.

One of my favorite Malaysian restaurant at southeast suburb, I go at least once a week to fix my cravings for laksa šŸ‘šŸ» my favorite food there is Fish laksa, Satay and Singapore noodle

Enjoyable hang out when catching up with friends one on one, have done this twice. Close to the cinemas, amazing decor, very modern and gives off an enchanted vibe. Vegetarian laksa is vegan and I love it! The waiter staff are very friendly and allow customers to take their left overs home, a massive thumbs up from me since the laksas are MASSIVE ā¤ļø

Nice little restaurant - busy as it is right next to the cinemas inside Southland shopping centre.
I had the chicken laksa which was flavoursome and delicious. Portion was large and super filling.
Mypinchofyum
Food was delicious and ambience was good. Portion size was quite big and good for sharing. Staff were friendly too. Definitely going back to try some of their other dishes.
Food Hunter
Great food and friendly service. Thereā€™re some unique dishes such as fried duck and best teh tarik ever tried. Iā€™ll absolutely recommend this restaurant due to their consistency of good food quality and customer service.
Melbourne Food Spotter
Visited Laksa King for some dinner last night. Food was really good and delicious. The vibe is great here as it's right next to the cinema area in Southland. The staff is friendly as well definitely worth visiting here if your at Southland.
Rachael
Pretty generic laksa house in a shopping centre. Would have liked so see a promotions menu or some sort of special list to spice things up. Wouldnā€™t particularly recommend due to size or flavour. The prawn dumpling noodle soup was bland and the dumplings bloated and pretty soulless. The noodles were sticking together and clumped sadly at the bottom. Laksa was okay I guess.
LeanGuy
This is the best restaurant in Southland, and one of the only good restaurants in Southland. You canā€™t go wrong with anything you order. Try the Nasi Goreng, chicken curry with roti bread, spring rolls, or dumplings, theyā€™re all fantastic. Of course thereā€™s the laksa, which is some of the best Iā€™ve tasted. This place is licensed, so have a beer with your spicy meal. Good size servings. Good price. Please stop charging merchants fee.

Laksa king is a nice restaurant; it's near the movies and we've popped in there before for a quick and yum dinner. It suffers a little bit from being inside such a busy shopping center, but honestly, as long as you're not sitting right out the front where everyone walks past, it's totally fine. The laksas are very tasty and authentic and the nasi goreng is great too. Service is impersonal but good and prompt and we've gotten take away a number of times. Definitely one of our "go to" places.
Luke Martini
Love the laksa king. Tried this one for the first time recently and itā€™s as good as the one in Kensington. Food is tasty with good portion sizes and comes out really quickly after ordering. Prices seems to be on point as well. Recommend!

Iā€™m usually a big fan of the laksa king franchise but this was disappointing. The seafood laksa was the saltiest laksa Iā€™ve ever had - really the only flavor was salt. For $18.50 the seafood was pretty stingy, two prawns, two tiny scallops and a bit of fish with not much else in the bowl. Service was a bit slow to take our order but otherwise no problems.

The two stars are because my colleague enjoyed her fried kuay teow and the actual restaurant itself is nice and comfortable.
Maria Condello
Right near the cinemas inside Southland, my daughter and I came before a movie and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The satay sauce is excellent because the peanut flavour is so strong and it's a good thickness, not too watery.Ā
But we found the portions on the small side, especially for the price. Decent size venue with plenty of seating so not a bad option for a pre-movie feed.
Foodie Goodie
Lovely place in southland, very newly renovated and open environment, love the peanut sauce for the chicken satay skewers and definitely one of the best chicken satay skewers out there. Laksa is decent but the char kuey teow is really good! Itā€™s on the chefā€™s special menu but itā€™s really delicious. The five spice chicken is definitely my favourite dish here
Hungry Little Dinosaur
Nothing spectacular, but pretty good by Southland standards. Good sized portions of comfort food that most good Asian noodle joints will have for about $15. Love the char kuay teo and Singapore noodles but not a fan of the Laksa or wonton soup noodle - very watered down supermarket flavours.
Julycheee
(2.5/5) Laksa King here has a nice menu of comforting food dishes. Service was friendly and food arrived quickly. Char kway teow flavour and wok breath could be stronger, but it wasn't bad. The soup dumplings unfortunately had too much msg.
K.jones
food was disappointing. beef was rubbery and not fresh. laksa lacked flavour and fried noodle dishes
nothing special. bit overpriced for what you get.
Heather Cameron
We frequent here pretty regularly and have never been let down. I must admit I'm no Laksa or Malaysian expert but my partner and I are always been extremely happy with the quality of food, service and portion sizes at this place.
Billie Harli-Altamura
The staff are always very attentive and nice. I always get the vegan laksa and it is delicious. The soup part is always very nice, same with the noodles! It is a very large bowl which is always appreciated. Although I must say, sometimes the veggies donā€™t seem very fresh, for example the beans are shrivelled when they should be nice and crunchy. Apart from this, very yummy!

Lately on Zomato, weā€™ve been having a little chatter about Laksa King based on someoneā€™s review. I mentioned that I liked Laksa King Flemington better than their Glen Waverley branch. This got me thinkingā€¦ howā€™s Laksa King Kitchen in Southland? Iā€™ve always been a bit skeptical with this one in Southland because of the demographics. Itā€™s located inside the cinema area, and seems to be trying to attract pre and post movie goers. Well look who the cat dragged in on this occasion?! ME!
Dave
Went with a friend after craving Laksa for ages! I got my usual Prawn Laksa which never fails. I demolished the serving, tasted great. But the highlight had to be my friends Fried Fish Laksa, it was delicious. The fish was well cooked, flaking away. The batter on the fish soaked in the Laksa, making the fish like little flavour explosions... Let's be real, just go try it!
Kacangma
I went to Laksa Kitchen twice, 6-8mths apart. Both times I ordered fish fillet laksa. I have to say the gravy tasted better the second time but it is still lacking something. Maybe itā€™s the belacan.
The fish were too salty and I couldnā€™t finish them. I understand that this is opened in an area where you have lesser Asian but I do hope that they can stick to their recipe and presentation from Laksa King.

Such a convenient spot for after the movies. Clean, efficient and well priced yummy food. I wish I could get past the seafood laksa but canā€™t šŸ˜³ It is just too good and filled with squid, prawns and scallops. I must go again and try something else!!

You have to wonder about your fellow man when you see complaints about the signature dish of this place, the Laksa. Either these reviewers are from a parallel universe or their taste buds need educating. But it does serve to show how far this country has come from meat and three veg. The seafood curry laksa is a splendid creation and you will be savouring it for hours after you eat it. Just tell me it does not look good. It helps they make a coeliac version just for me with extra rice noodles. There are only two dishes I eat here: the aforementioned SCL and the Singapore Noodle which has both a lightness of texture, and meaty heartiness all at once. Add a zing of lemon and it is meal in itself. The venue is passably ordinary with shoppers and movie goers parading past all the time. And it is noisy. But it is the best place to eat in Southland by a country mile. I like to watch them cook it up behind the glass partitions. And I love the fact I can get my fix closer to home, and avoid the long trudge to Flemington. Service can be slow, so a point deducted for that. Seafood Curry Laksa from Laksa King: Accept No Substitutes.
@lukebMelb
Laksa king kitchen is a great addition to Southland shopping centre. The menu offers a wide variety of Malaysian cuisine.

I would recommend the Singapore noodles, the roti wraps and the steamed prawn dumplings. Sadly the beef laksa I ordered was terrible. The sauce was 99% coconut milk. I couldn't taste anything else. And I have had laksa many times. The beef was also thin, dry and of low quality.

I would return in the future, but avoid the laksa.

Decided to try here tonight for dinner before going to the movies and I was not disappointed. The food came out very quickly which was good & was fresh and tasty. All the flavours in their food was delicious and traditional! Will definitely be returning again!
Iris
Quite disappointed as they have different ingredients and menu from the main Laksa King in Flemington. (I am disappointed because I expect I would get the same thing from the one in Flemington.)

This Laksa King in Southland doesn't have eggplants in their Laksa as that was the highlight when I had mine in Flemington.
They don't have ice kachang and sago pudding in their desert menu as well.

Other than that, the foods are pretty good as Laksa King still has the best Laksa in Melbourne.

I wish Southland Laksa King can have the same thing from Flemington so we don't have to travel all the way to the west to have this delicious Laksa.

Very impressed with the food here, the food served here can be found on the streets of Malaysia and Singapore as hawker food, and this is the fancier version (with taste to match too). Food taste authentic, my Hainan chicken was very tender and juicy, the chicken rice cooked just right - with amazing aroma, a must try if you go there. Girlfriend ordered duck laksa, the soup was creamy with just the right amount of spiciness - also a highly recommended dish. I have been there multiple times and also tried the duck fried rice, although there wasn't much duck in it, the dish itself was delicious. I cannot fault anything I have ordered there. Service was average, sometimes have to wait a bit before you can catch a waiter's attention to order food. The dishes are a little bit dearer than your average Asian restaurant, around $15-$20 per dish. But it is definitely worth it, I go there every time I see a movie at Southland.

Checked out this place after having tried the Flemington branch the last time I was here. There are a few advantages of coming here instead. No queues, plenty of of seats and it's location of being in a Westfield mall means plenty of options when it comes to parking and shopping.

The group I was with ordered the duck and seafood laksa. The laksa gravy was pretty good although I wasn't used to having short beans in it. The duck laksa would be a lot better if the duck meat was shredded rather than sliced. I also ordered the teh tarik which was quite good too.

Overall I liked the food served here and would definitely come again. Definitely recommended if you are craving Laksa and don't wish to queue up at the Flemington branch. šŸ‘šŸ¼

Terrible meal.Ā The worst I had in a long time.Ā The serve were generous and well presented.Ā But the quality is terrible.Ā The seafood laksa was diluted with coconut cream and lack any flavour.Ā The wonton noodle were bland.Ā I was shocked with the total bill for lunch for 3 people in excess of $85.Ā Then they want to charge me 2% surcharge for credit card.Ā Stay clear from this place.Ā Definitely not authentic Asian food at all.
Brittany Clark
Decent flavour, large serving size and variety of vegetables. With its many meal options this place is by far the best Asian restaurant in southland.
Michael
Went here for the second time recently & thought the 1st time was only average. This time I got the duck laksa & it was delicious. I prefer my food very hot (temp) & it didnā€™t disappoint. I will go back for sure & if you like duck & laksa then this soup is for you!!
Donita
Iā€™ve been here long time ago. It was super big and delicious laksa.. I even canā€™t finish it. Nice big space, service was ok, perfect for having dinner after movie.
Groovy Smoothy
Laksa noobie right here!!
Grabbed the vego curry laksa and i was left fuller than ever. The bowl was huge, loved the variety of veggies and noodles in the bowl and the broth was sooo good!! My mission was to finish it because i dont want to leave good food too waste. The place also looked so refreshing compared to the other dull, dark resturants in that southland strip.

I'm rating high for the vegetarian laksa here cos it's that good! This place is in Southland though and is otherwise a bit expensive for what it is (except veg laksa is like $14 and is totally worth it) always a plentiful amount of veggies that are fresh and the laksa is not too oily, Yummmm!
Marieeats
Been here 5 times and my family and friends absolutely adores the food. The customer service was barely average. The ambiance is great and lively but also feels sort of rushed?
Their food is worth it though. Highly recommend their char kway teow (generous with their seafood), laksa king's fried rice, vegetarian fried rice, seafood laksa and five spice calamari. Last but not the least, the regular star of show, their wassabi prawns; which were creamy and crispy and packed full of flavour, not too spicy at all.
I've tried their stir fried vegetables from their special menu but sadly it was bland and hardly cooked (even my mom who loves crunchy vegetables found it hard to enjoy).
I hope the restaurant continues to do well and expand with more vegetarian/vegan friendly dishes.
Burgers Of Melbourne
Expected more from a restaurant that calls themselves the king's. Very bland Laksa and not a place I will be going back to. One visit is more than enough.

Lively Friday night meal at Laksa King. Service was quick and unassuming, food quick to table and pleasant staff. Chicken ribs cooked well, flavoursome with crispy skin to contrast the meaty portions and fluffy rice. Lemon tea was ok. Sitting area decor was a fresh, modern indoor courtyard feel, atmosphere busy with chatter and activity. It was busy during dinner service, though the wait did not seem too long. Good selection of Malay/Chinese food, fair pricing for good portions. Well worth the visit.

We want for a movie in Southland Shopping Center and what better way to wind up eating Laksa in coldest days in Melbourne for over 50 years. We ordered Satay Chicken skewers served with peanut sauce, Veg spring rolls and vegetarian laksa. Laksa broath was excellent seasoned with right amount of spices and tasty treat.
The place is nice and service was quicker with nice ambiance. Would I eat here if I get a chance again? Yes of course!
Amy K O'Neill
Terrible service despite heaps of staff. They literally ignored us multiple times and looked absolutely miserable. Laksa was good- I would go back for it again - not the best I've had but still nice. Hopefully they do something about their staff and customer service as it was really terrible. Will give it a second try but if the service is the same again won't return.

Such a great location to indulge in a laksa after shopping or a movie... or just because is a cold wintery night!
We normally have one of their laksa's which we enjoy tremendously but this time we tried something different.
Starter:
Steamed prawn dumplings with a mildly spicy sauce. Yum. Always good. Hard to go wrong.
Mains:
I had the Hainan chicken rice and daughter the Nasi Lemak.
I think I'll stick to the laksas!
It was ok. Chicken was poached with a basil type sauce. Rice was ok but needed the chilli and basil sauce through it for flavour.
Side salad for me was pointless. Mostly cucumber which I don't eat and 2 bits of capsicum.
As a whole it was ok. I wouldn't order again. Their other dishes are more flavoursome.
Daughters chicken dish was also ok. Said it had anchovies which I was hanging out for. There were there but I have no idea what they did to them. Had no flavour.
I will return for a laksa.

Came here friday night, was crowded, really crowded. Have to wait for 5 minutes to get to a table. Food selection isnt bad, they got a bunch of chef menu out of the main list. Place wasnt comfortable, the food taste good, the portion is big, price is average. 3.5/5

Been here a few times now. The curry is very tasty. The dish sizes are on the larger size so you get your money's worth. The waiters are attentive but also don't bother you too much so you can just enjoy your meal and take your time. Overall a very nice place to have dinner and relax with a glass of wine or tea šŸ‘šŸ» My boyfriend also loves this place and highly rates the curry.
Kristie Koo
I liked it. Service was normal, a little better than the types of service you'd expect at Asian restaurant, then again this is a local chain/franchise, so service should kind of be better. The laksa broth was flavourful and the seafood portions were generous and really fresh. Portion of the whole bowl was huge, can probably feed 2 people. Well worth the $18 price tag. I'll definitely be back if I'm in the area.

Alright, Friday night and record breaking home time for my husbandā€“ 5:30pm! It looks like a waste if we donā€™t make the most of it. ā€œSo shall we go out for dinner?ā€I asked. Its all natural thinking. Today we tried a new place called ā€œLaksa Kingā€ in Southland shopping centre. Well I hear you say its not quite a romantic place for couple to have a dinner, with a village movie theatre right next to it. Itā€™s more like a spot for people to have a quick bite before cozying up for a motion experience. However, Laksa KingĀ definitely is a family place. Thereā€™s enough space for little oneā€™s to sit and walking around. Plus, the high ceiling gives you a quite stressless feeling, which doesnā€™t happen often in aĀ mall.

With the popularity of Laksa King, established in 1998, founder Esmond expands to the bayside of Melbourne with Laksa King Kitchen. The food and menu are almost the same, with a different setting - an open dining space inside of a shopping centre rather than their established standalone restaurants.

The staff were friendly, but the service and the dishes were lacking quite a bit.

The website says that they focus on producing authentic Malaysian flavours, with most of their dishes based on authentic Malaysian recipes which were originally created in Laksa Kingā€™s first site in Flemington from scratch. I havenā€™t been to the one in Flemington for quite some time, but I do remember the flavours being richer and tastier.Ā

Check out the review of Laksa King Kitchen in the blog post below.

Not as good as the one in flemington. Pretty disappointing. Asian flavours not as authentic or homely like back in Asia. Laksa seems to be missing number of ingredients as well. Tried quite a few other dishes and a bit blend.

Love dropping in here for a quick meal. Easy to get a table, quick service and good food!
Can sometimes be really loud which is expected as it is in a shopping centre.
Usually easy to get a table and although it doesn't seem to have the extensive menu that can be found at its Flemington counterpart it's definitely worth your money!
Would recommend if looking for a quick, non food court meal when at Southland.
Suburb Review
Positive thing about this branch is there was no lines at dinner time.. in saying that, i would actually rather wait in line at the Flemington one! The laksa isnt just as good!! The chicken tasted very processed unlike the one in flemington which is shredded. More expensive here also...šŸ‘Ž

I always order seafood laksa and it is amazing! The floor has enough space and I can always relax at here. It would be one of great option to have a lunch during shopping at Westfield.
Convivialsins
Didn't mind the seafood laksa or the nasi lemak here. Not sure if affiliated with laksa king itself.. anyhoo for shopping centre food it was pretty decent. The seafood laksa had a good amount of seafood .. and the soup base was yum. The nasi lemak... I thought was ok only. WIR? Yeah it's not bad if ur after alternatives for choice ..
Jo.bellabella
Love this place. Predictably delicious every time. Laksa with rockling or vegetarian is amazing and soooo big, brimming with goodness. I've not finished a bowl yet.

Gorgeous space with bright deco and lighting , and delicious Malaysian food! Seafood laksa was great with generous ingredients . Nasi lemak may not be truly authentic nevertheless still tasted good .
FS Master
Yum yum vegetarian laksa, fast serve, good service, will coming back again, 100% will recommend to friends and relatives. Will try the vegetarian fried rice next visit.
Coco
Tried the curry chicken nasi lemak instead of laksa as they didn't have on the menu Assam laksa that I like. Looking through the menu I find the price was a little pricey for some of the items. For example, steamed dumplings were $10.50 for 5 pcs and seafood laksa was $18. The nasi lemak came in a decent portion size. They were generous with the curry chicken and the egg was cooked the way I like it - creamy yolk and not runny. It also came with peanuts, sambal anchovies and pickled cucumbers. The sambal anchovies were soggy. Would prefer it to be crispy but it's not a deal breaker.

Service was good with staff eager to take orders. Kitchen and surroundings is clean. Plenty of space if you need to park your pram.

Overall, great food and good service despite some items on the menu being pricier.

Beautiful.Ā Ā Ordered the seafood Laksa. Just what you expect. Full of seafood and noodles.Ā The taste was amazing. Thanks guys. Great spot for a quick eat before a movie.Ā Clean and bright and the service was excellent. Really couldn't fault this place.
Sean
Amazing food! However, their original laksa from Kensington (the original laksa king) had better chicken, and eggplant which has now been substituted by green beans... yuck. The service here sucks, no one smiles, and it feels like such an effort for them to put an order through when I come and eat here every week... pick up your game in terms of hospitality because the food is still great.
Jerrin Mathew
Finally went here to see what the hype was all a about...ordered Mee Goreng and Roti Satay sauce. Flavours were nice, nothing to fault but at the same time, the dish did not offer that extra bang i was looking for.
Overall average...ok to miss
Tiantian Xiao
Tried 3 dishes, hainan chicken very very good, 4.5/5.

Mini spring roll 3/5, not feeling that right about the stuffing.

Roti is the real disappointment , this supposed to be Malaysian signature dish, but what they did is salty and not traditional.

never coming back. my meal was cold and i order ice lychee which was like sugar in water with some lychee. waiter was so bad. i am chef too according to me going there is wasting your time and money.
Stephanie Papazois
I really love the decor here and the atmosphere. The lighting and ambiance of the restaurant makes it very inviting (compared to the other eateries in this section of the cinema). Doesn't feel at all like a restaurant in a shopping centre. It's a great place to enjoy a meal before watching a movie at the cinema. Pretty good value. Service is quick and the staff are very friendly.
The_chic_analyst
Omg this place is soooo bad. Went there twice .. thought the second time will improve .. no hope.. food was normal food court quality.. worse is the service ... it gives the feeling that i owe them from past life!!! Totally regretting on my second visit. Don't kno why I went there

Came here for the first time.
My partner has been telling me this place is great so I gave it a try.
To my surprise, it was far better than what I expected.

The food does taste like home.
We ordered the seafood laksa and vegetarian laksa.
Even though the price for each meal seems a little pricey, but the portions were huge and more stuffs in it. You could actually order one big bowl of laksa and share with another friend by ordering one extra bowl of rice.

The ambience is nice too. I could tell the place has just been newly renovated. Staffs were attentive and made sure we had a good time.
Mulyadi.robin
I've been to Laksa King in footscray, which is one of the top restaurants for Laksa in the country perhaps. Sorely disappointed with the food quality at Southland. At on average $15 a meal, you would expect much better quality. It feels like the Laksa here has been westernized if there is such a thing, without being racist about it.

Sorry, but won't return anytime soon.
Tracy
Decided to try this place since ive walked past it so many times. The service was great was greeted with a smile as we walked in and the staff was very friendly especially the manager there she helped us with menu and was really patient with us because we were so picky. The food was amazing especially the confit duck, the only thing that wasnt so great was the curry puffs it was too oily and its so small ( a bit pricey), but i would definitely come back!
Cath J Alf
The food is good but the customer service is non existent. Wait staff are not engaged with customers, practically rolled their eyes when we just wanted water to drink with meal...not sure if thats why other tables got meals before we did. Then when you pay theres no 'how was your meal? Or Smile or thank you just debit or credit, Even the docket gets put your table with the meal says 'job list' what about thank you for your custom even just the restaurant name... very impersonal.. sorry for making you cook my meal. Disappointed wont go back
This place looks a lot nicer now that they've renovated it. Very open and modern, especially for a restaurant inside a shopping centre.

The food is pretty good. Nothing that blew my socks off, but just good. Nice assortment of drinks on the menu to, which is good.

Would go back again if I was waiting for a movie.

Well priced for the quality of this sort of restaurant.
NumNum
Difficult to compete with the big grand daddy in Flemington. Laksa was a few dollars more, that's okay since shopping center food is often expensive. The chicken laksa didn't have the same spice and flavour. It was good just not as good as the king.
Cheeseburger Anyone? "Where's The Sauce"?
So I'm adding 7 days later , that we came back and ordered the chicken curry (malaysian style) which has sweet potato in it , roti, and steamed rice on the side as you have to order these separately..
It was fantastic! Perfect amount of chili where you can still taste every other flavour! Such a flavoursum dish! Also plenty of chicken! My partner and i shared it and struggled to finish it. Downfall? The roti is cut into little strips. Dont cut it! I like it whole to scoop my curry up. YUM!

June 2016.
All the restaurants at southland are so bad! Tonight we decide to catch a movie in gold class style. INDIPENDANCE DAY 2! lets hope its good... walked past laksa king and thought ou this is new.. im not a fan generally of this cuisine but my partner loves it.
We ordered steamed prawn dumplins in the spicy soy. Was nice.. but nothing great.
Roti roll was next, fluffy roti rolled with a filling of onion, crispy chicken, fresh cucumber and tomatoe and a peanut satay sauce. This was fantastic! Really flavoursum and fresh! Next was the chicken laksa that my partner ordered and of course i tried. This was creamy and rich and full of flavour! 2 types of noodles in there with heaps of chicken a few beans and tofu. The base of the soup was absolutely Devine! So full now and ready for the recliner chairs in gold class! About time southland had a restaurant for a decent feed!!

Not sure why it's rated low , tried the vegetarian laksa and prawn dumplings in noodle soup. Good portion and satisfying meal! I will come back.

We met at Southland late Sunday arvo after a weekend apart and wanted to get dinner and hangout together so we chose Laksa King Kitchen.

The decor of this place is pretty cool for a restaurant inside a shopping centre, it very open and spacious with trees and greenery against a natural wood backdrop.

We weren't super hungry so we decided to share our meals as always, we ordered the curry chicken, the chicken rib rice and the Hainan chicken rice.

The curry was rich, creamy and zesty with good amounts of chicken and potato. The rib rice had a nice spicy taste but was a little dry and the Hainan chicken was cooked well but the ginger sauce was just ginger purƩe and not a mix with a chilli sauce, that was served separately.

The food was nice but next time I would try some larger main dishes as these were more smaller options to share easier.
The Food Traveller
We placed an order for satay skewers, seafood laksa and nasi lemak. The satay skewered were amazing but apart from that the other two didn't really fascinate me. I also felt that the dishes were a bit overpriced.

We visited Laksa King after seeing a movie. First time for both of us.
Decor was cool and there was plenty of space inside. We were greeted and sat right away.
Menu isn't that big, but I don't eat Malaysian too much so wasn't bothered (and as previous reviews have mentioned this is their concept restaurant).

I ordered the vegetarian laksa ($14) and my partner ordered the chicken laksa ($14.50) + roti ($6)
I was reasonably happy with my laksa and share of roti. My partner however was disappointed and didn't find it very tasty.
I thought laksa pricing was okay for shopping centre restaurant however $6 for roti seemed overpriced to me.

In between a series of fast food restaurants enticing movie goers with a selection of burgers, chicken, pizzas, tapas and pub food is Laksa King Kitchen, a popular Malaysian food establishment that has brought some of its signature dishes from Flemington down town to Southland Shopping Centre. I was excited by the fact that I wouldnā€™t have to drive up to the CBD and beyond just to try their most popular Laksa bowls.

Modern deco and very welcoming . Staff was a bit confused and did not have is the menu. The food available was much less than the main shop as flemmigton. Laksa was average but lack the X factor compare to its older brother. Lots of room for improvement.
The Pierced Palate
The laksa's were ok. Nothing to go WOW about. Partner had the duck laksa, duck tasted old & had a stale smell to it, I had the chicken laksa & the chicken pieces were really small & dry. The laksa broth did not have enough oomph to it. It lacked the richness, creaminess & overall taste that a laksa should have, it was very very mild in flavour. The service was not all there either, it seemed like a hard task for the staff to smile. Their sambal on the side though was amazing! The restaurant has a very beautiful setting but they do need to improve with their food & customer service.

For a place with laksa in the name, I was extremely disappointed. The soup has no depth of flavour, too much chilli and the beef version I had, had bit of dried shrivelled tasteless beef.
We also shared the chicken satay skewered which were average.

Venue is lovely, modern, and spacious. This branch does satisfy my Malaysian food cravings in the south to an extent. My curry laksa was tasty and husband's nasi lemak good too. Laksa broth similar to the original in Flemington I've been visiting since I was a student many moons ago. However, as mentioned by other reviewers, serving style appears to have been altered to cater to a bland western palette, no fish cake or eggplant in sight. Melbourne is extremely multi cultural and I've met westerners who can eat spicier food than I and would not baulk at the sight of fish cake or tofu. My suggestion which I did pass on was to keep the original laksa King version of dishes and extend the menu. My second favourite dish is the Ipoh hor fun, would love love love to have easy access to it in the bayside area!
Filled With Food
After shopping around in Southland, we made our way to Laksa King. When we walked passed it, I instantlyĀ craved Ā laksa. All the memories of the mouthwatering laksa from the Flemington store flooded my memory. Ā I really hoped it would be the same or at least on par. The interior of the restaurant looked very elegant. With a mix of marble tables, wooden accents and green plants, it was definitely Instagram worthy. We ordered one chicken and one beef laksa. The menu was very small (with only 5 laksa options)Ā and the prices were ridiculously expensive, compared to the Flemington store. We payed $17.00 each compared to the $10.80 charged at Flemington. Ā The broth of the laksa was rich, creamy and spicy, just like the original, but the rice noodles were hard. It did not taste or feel complete. The laksa came with a combination of white rice noodles, thick yellow Hokkien noodles, beans, tofu and meat (chicken/beef). The chicken worked well with the broth as it was tender and soft, whilst the beef was questionable.Ā Although the service was fast and the atmosphere was lively, the food did not reach my expectations.Ā I will continue to visit Flemington for my laksa cravings.

Please note the menu updated on Zomato is not the actual menu. The actual menu has much less and is quite a bit more expensive. We decided to give it a go since it's the new kid on the block and we love the Flemington one. To our disappointment the chicken curry laksa cost around $14.50 and was fairly average. The chicken was extremely chewy. The roti roll which is one of the few things I wanted on the entree menu cos more than most of the mains so we decided against it. We asked if the Teh tarik could be hot instead of cold but were denied the request. So we went with a lemon lime bitter instead which was loaded with ice and very little actual drink. I was looking forward to ice kachang or cendol for dessert as you would expect for laksa restaurants but was disappointed as both were not on the menu. Perhaps our first and last visit, mainly due to cost and the limited menu range.

Venue: modern and clean spacious bright colours
Food: was craving for roti so came in to try it out.
Was disappointed with the roti, felt like it was microwaved hot in the middle and extremely dry outside.
The hainanese chicken and rice, tasty rice with great lemongrass topping but chicken way to dry.
The only good thing from my experience was the satay sauce was perfect.
We decided to give it a go despite the not so positive feedback. First thing that struck me was that the menu I've seen on zomato was not the same as the actual menu. Was not pleased as I went in thinking there would be char kway teow etc. Anyway, still gave them the benefit of the doubt and thankfully it did not disappoint. The service was top notch, kids utensils and sharing plates /bowls were supplied without asking. My laksa craving was satisfied, even though the broth was not as creamy and rich as the Flemington store, and also there weren't any egg plant nor okra too. The confit duck was deep fried to perfection and the sauce, which we felt tasted akin to rojak sauce, was very appetising. Prices were of course higher than the norm but were fully compensated by the delectable meal.

Disappointing. I wish they stuck to their authentic food that they serve at the Flemington branch. This branch serves westernised food. As if the westerners cant tell! Serve the authentic food like you do at flemington and everyone will be happier.

Laksa is okay*. Western palate in mind, as another reviewer said. The fried bits of rockling in the fish fillet laksa were overcooked.
The price point (remember, we're in a shopping mall here) is acceptable.

*Assuming the laksa arrives. We've been twice. It was okay the first time but the second time proved to be ... less than okay. When we came in we had to flag the attention of a waiter. The waiter threw (not hyperbole) our menus on a table and walked away ... never to return. It was impossible to flag down any of his colleagues, as they were so focused on whatever it was they were doing (cleaning mess from a neighbouring table, straightening the pile of menus out the front, holding up the counter). Our 'flagging' took the form that normally works in, well, the kind of place where you actually need to get the attention of a waiter. We took this to mean they weren't particularly interested in serving laksa that day.

NeverĀ going there again after we got food poisoning on 29/01/16 from 2 different dishes -Ā both dishes were served with Beef Rendang.Ā Also, too pricey, especially given the average quality and taste of the food.

In the shopping centre.... Just Simple
Food is not that great in comparison to Flemington. The staff is acceptably friendly.
Prices. .... higher than other branches.

Comfortable, stylish decor, great service, serving food squarely targeted at a Western palate, a distant relative of the original Laksa King in the dingy alley in Flemington. Still, the Hainan Chicken Rice was quite good with silky tender chicken and a tasty rice. The chilli sauce was lacking any garlic zing.

The chicken laksa, prawn dumpling noodles were ok. The Nasi Goreng seemed like a fried rice with satay sauce mixed in.
TravellingFoodie
One more Laksa King to satisfy those laksa cravings..just opposite Nandos in Southland. It's slightly pricier than the original Laksa King in Flemington, with a smaller menu, and missing that hawker feel, but the food is still very good and it's more comfy here.

If ordering vegetarian fried rice be sure to specify "no egg" because the default is with the egg fried into it. The vegetarian spring rolls were too oily.

Was excited to know that Laksa King is opening an outlet near me. But was a little disappointed to find out that the menu is no where as extensive as the one in Flemington. Would go again if I am desperate but otherwise, would still drive to Flemington to experience the 'real' thing
