E: Gami Chicken is one of my all-time favourite restaurant chains and I’ve visited quite a few across Melbourne. Considering this, it’s quite fair to assume my expectations were quite high. But how did the Southland location compare?
Staff were super welcoming, happy and enthusiastic throughout our visit, as well as wonderfully accomodating. I accidentally ordered 2x the sweet chilli sauce, and once I realised, they were more than happy to exchange one of the sauces for a soy garlic. When I asked for the pickled reddish as it seemed it was forgotten (easy mistake and no bother at all), they were also apologetic and were so happy to grab one for us. It is these situations where I never want to bother staff or seem like an annoying nuisance, but the staff were so kind and welcoming that it genuinely felt like I wasn’t bothering them at all. Thats a 5/5 for service in my books.
In terms of food, the chicken was I N C R E D I B L E. It was perfectly fried - the butter batter was crunchy and crispy, yet the chicken itself was oozing with juices and steaming from freshness. I honestly think this was the best chicken I’ve had at a Gami before.
But as all things come up, they must also come down. The chips unfortunately, were the weak link in the experience. They tasted incredibly oily - to the point we couldn’t even bring ourselves to finish even half of them out of fear we would feel/get sick. We felt glad in this visit the we also ordered rice to counterbalance the super oily chips and keep us full.
Overall, it was a great experience and I would visit again. Perhaps I would find another side to accompany the chicken in place of the chips. But I am also willing to believe this was a once-off and if I’m ever dining at Gami Southland again, I would be happy to give the chips another go in future.
Food: 3.5/5
Ambience: 3.5/5
Service: 4/5
Value: 3/5
Overall: 3.5/5
If you LOVE fried chicken then this place is certainly your jam! I indulged in some mouth watering chicken pieces, crispy on the outside & juicy on the inside.
Not only is the chicken yummy the sauces this place has is next level! Yummy coleslaw to accompany, it’s the perfect naughty yet nice treat 🍗🍗🍗🍗
Im a huge fan of rice cakes and i loved the rice cakes here!!! Got the soy garlic boneless chicken- was well cooked and had a nice flavour. Will be back
Love the korean fried chicken and the corn cheese... we come here on special occasions since it's a bit more pricey than the local fast food... the staff are very nice..
Finally got around to trying this place, and it was well worth the wait! Chicken is so good here, fresh, juicy and crispy! The honey mustard sauce was also a great accompaniment. We had the katsu chicken, chicken wings and chicken burger. All were well cooked and very tasty. Will be going back for sure!
Service was outstanding boneless chicken really crisp and nice. It’s a bit expensive that’s all but if you want cheap chicken go to kfc
Highly recommended
My friends and I went to Gami last night before a movie. They had been there a couple of times but it was my first, so I let them suggest what to eat. The boneless chicken was super tasty, cooked to perfection, really tender inside. The corn cheese was soooo good too. The potato heaven is super heavy, but for those who love potato you will quite literally be in potato heaven. It’s a bed of creamy potato mash, with cheese and potato wedges, sour cream and sweet chilli. Good serving sizes too. The only let down was the Mandu, pretty tasteless and mushy inside. And it came out way after we’d gotten through most of our dishes. So much so we’d forgotten we’d even ordered it. There was a bit of a wait for all the the dishes, came out one by one with too much time in between. The side salad of slaw is pretty dull, seems as though it’s purely been put there to add colour and texture, no focus on the actual flavour. Other than that, I left feeling really satisfied and nearly died from a food coma in the movie. This is the place to go if you’re craving nothing but fried chicken. Yum
The food was good here like another gami restaurants. The chicken was good and the staff were friendly. The meal was served fast and was enjoyable to eat.
We have accidentally become regulars here, simply because the food is so amazing 😍 not only the food, heads up to the waiters 👍 service is great & with a smile ✌️ thanks guys
My friends from office brought me to this outlet for lunch. The food on the menu looked interesting but all of us went with Chicken burger with chips. The burger was really delicious. That chips were different from the usual ones you get at all other fast food restaurants. It had a mild spicy flavor and that enhanced the taste of the chips. Loved the lunch here and I would definitely be coming back again.
I've now officially tried all the different flavours of the fried chicken, and I can say that the spicy flavour is actually the best!
If you don't mind a little bit of heat (it's not overly spicy) then definitely try it as an option, it's less sickly than the sweet chilli or soy garlic flavours.
The seafood and spring onion pancake is a great starter/sharing option to whet the appetite! The Southland location isn't that large, is very noisy but a great convenient pit stop before the movies or in between a busy day shopping. The service is friendly but you will need to flag down their attention to get some service.
Tried the fried chicken chop from their lunch menu. The chicken was crispy and thin. It was slightly overfried but otherwise still tasty and not dry. The salad that came with it though was underwhelming and was basically tasteless leaves thrown together. I also wish they had an option of a single serve or smaller serve of fried chicken instead of a $30+ large serve.
Gami is Gami. It doesn't matter which one you go to, you always know what your going to get. Spicy is Spicy, Sweet Chilli is Sweet, and original is always a winner in my books.
Was here for dinner today and was seated outside. Bad mistake as service was a lil less attentive, had to wave down before we got to order. Had to ask for water twice also.
We ordered the half chicken with soy garlic on the side and 2 sides - cheesy corn and kimchi pancake. The 2 sides came out first.. we actually nearly polished our sides before the main - chicken came out approx 15-20min later. Lucky the sides were good! Cheesy corn was sweet and salty. The pancake was cripsy and spicy. The chicken was a let down though.. not meaty enough. Had to ask them for our soy garlic sauce which they forgot. Chicken was cripsy just not tender as I would like it.
Overall pleasant experience.
The chicken here is always perfect and bursting with flavours and the staff are always friendly and helpful. Looking forward to trying more of the range on the menu.
I'd call this soul food 👌🏽, really tasty flavours on offer that just work really well, great for casual dining, the fried chicken on offer comes with nice finishing coatings, just pick some good accompanying side dishes, a cold beer and your night will be set for a feast.
Great place for your Korean chicken cravings ! One of the best places I've had this type of chicken because it wasn't so dry. Service was fast and very friendly, and although the bill was on the pricier side ($65) for two, having a group would allow more dishes to be tried. Will definitely be going back to try their 'potato heaven' !!
a very pleasant place to visit,, the fried chicken are taste soo good, we order whole chicken with 17 piece cuts just right for 2-3 people, the staff are very helpfull to recommend us which one is favorite,we end up with spicy and original with sweet and chilli, garlic sauce on the side,so happy with what we ordered. 👍🏾👍🏾 keep it up!
I went her for the first time with hubby and but. They have the best fried chicken and the service was really quick. The cheese corn is a must - all washed down with a beer. You will not be disappointed!
After hearing many, many good things about Gami chicken’s various branches across Melbourne I decided to pop into their newly opened Southland store to give it a try. With its wood finish, bold colours and trendy central bench seating, Gami chicken tries to bridge that gap between take out and restaurant dining. We were greeted by friendly, cheerful staff and received full table service throughout our meal, including some great recommendations. Despite being brand new, everything was laid out to perfection on the tables, and they enjoyed a constant flow of customers throughout our time there. The unit is pretty small (although there is extra seating out on the walkway) so I imagine Gami is going to be a popular choice – be prepared to queue for a table.
The newly opened Gami in Southland continues the trend of serving excellent Korean fried chicken. Menu is familiar, the sweet chilli/spicy flavouring didn't disappoint and the staff attentive.
Seating in Southland is split between the restaurant alcove and the median strip on the walkway leading to the cinemas, so thoroughfare can become noisy at times, but with good company and the delicious fried chicken to distract you, it can set up for a great meal nonetheless.
Attentive staff, great atmosphere and food!
The fried chicken, kimchi pancakes, spicy chicken with rice cakes are always a winner but do try their battered chips (ask for extra seasoning!) - it's perfect! A great addition to Westfield Southland :) Will be going back quite frequently.
Was on the way to tgif when I stumbled across this place. It is newly open and the service is great. I ordered the boneless chicken with half spicy and original. The food tasted amazing. Highly recommend. Grab a sit and relax with beer and chicken. Yum!
Visited this place for the first time with friends and we had a wonderful evening.
All the food we ordered was very tasty and wonderful side for the beer of OAK.
Beer and food for 5 people just cost us a little of 130 bucks. Best place for friends and family get together.
Awesome customer service and they putting a smile on all of our faces. Highly recommended.
WILL DEFINITELY VISIT AGAIN!!!!❤️❤️
Fantastic place to fine! Great atmosphere and really welcoming staff coupled with fantastic food makes this one of my new favourites places to dine. I must say I dined here a few years back when it first opened and wasn't that impressed but it's come along in leaps and bounds. We had the prawn Mandu which are to die for followed by the Big Chicken, which is new on the menu, and consists of boneless chicken, cheese sticks, rice cakes, French fries and four sauces! Heaps to go round! Cooked to perfection and served with a smile! Definitely going back for more!
Very Respectable and Friendly staff, most especially the food is reasonable price , the chicken so crispy and tasty, love it. Good for large group of friends to dine in, or families. Will come back here for sure.
Had walked past many times but finally tried it and so glad we did. I thought just chicken but they did have vegetarian options. OK vegan forget it, but vegetarian fine. Husband and I shared creamed corn cooked in cheese that came out in a little oven pan that was absolutely delicious. Husband then had prawn mandus, which in my ignorance asked if were like curry puffs, but no they are fried dumplings. Husband loved. I had the vegetarian teriyaki burger which comprised a vegetarian chicken like patty (yes they exist) in a bun with sauce and salad and with a side of chips. The burger was good but the chips were divine, nice and fluffy on the inside and perfectly crispy, with Gami batter, on the outside. Had to bring half of it home. Other vegetarian things I would try, mozeralla sticks, vegetarian mandus, vegetarian potato noodle stir fry and heavens above a three layer mashed potato dish!!! Brandon was really helpful and attentive. Thanks Brandon.
Our Local Gem 🌟
Hands down the best Gami in Melbourne ! 🍗
5th time ordering this lockdown =p
My partner and I can’t get enough. The fried chicken wings are to die for.
The flavour is spot on it’s almost addictive, not too oily and the texture and crunch are perfect every time. Even when we order take away.
We can never have fried chicken without the corn cheese. The two together are a perfect combination 😋 Tastes just as good as dining in.
We can’t wait to dine in again. The restaurant itself is vibrant and busy. And the staff are amazing. They remember us by name, which is always nice.
Highly recommended 👍🏼
Fantastic Korean fried chicken, great setting for family dining, my kids had great time tonight! Probably the best fried chicken we have had for a long time!
Just the best fried chicken. Ever. I went to Gami this evening and I won't lie, it was a bit chaotic with new staff members (COVID has reamed out so many small businesses like this). But despite this, I was well looked after and honestly, the chicken wings were well worth the wait. Stealing hot and juicy on the inside, crispy and tasty on the outside. Forget Kentucky, Korean Fried Chicken is the way to go.
Welcoming staff coupled with fantastic food.Fried chicken and beer go well together.Chicken not too oily and the texture and crunch are perfect every time. Will try their cocktails and spicy sauce next time.
