Review Gargano - Claremont

Simon Yeak
Had such a wonderful time. Mario went above and beyond for my kids birthday celebration. The food and service were fantastic! Most authentic Italian pizza I've had outside of Italy!
Yolande Saunders
Lovely food, very helpful and attentive staff. Enjoyed the night thoroughly

Love the food and cosy options. In the crowd area or quiet, romantic lounge with lovely food and great service. Staff are always nice to chat to and the soft couches and good wine make it a perfect place for a group or romantic meet. Love the changes

Dropped in to see Arthur Robinson quintet. Great atmosphere. Great easy listening jazz .beautiful vocals by Kim and the best fresh tasting perfect pizza I've had for a long time. Looking forward to next visit.

My favorited Italian restaurant in Perth. It is not the most fancy place but the food is always fantastic the tiramisu is always fresh and made with good coffee and the limoncello is always cold and ready to be served. But what i like the most about this place is the people. Really friendly and great people that makes you feel as if you were actually in Italy.

Gargano is one of the best resturants in Perth by far! My partner and I have quickly becoming regulars after stumbling upon it one night whilst looking for a hearty, Italian meal. Amazing service - they remember our names and even the table we like to sit at! Always friendly staff and a beautiful resturant. We are now weekly regulars!

Really good, traditional italian food. Excellent wine list and proper waiters/service. What's not to like? Except the prices!
Monique Bossie
Wonderful service! Delicious pasta! And possibly the best pizza we've ever had out of Italy. Even a tour of the wine cellar

Excellent service with cosmopolitan atmosphere. Traditional Italian travitoria menu for a good price. Food was tasty, full of flavour and good portion size. We will be going back again. Highly recommend.

Really loved the food from this restaurant and the lovely waitress we had serve us too, both of which I'd rate 5 stars. My issue is the male manager belittled his staff (mostly the lovely waitress who had served us) and done it in front of everyone. Extremely unprofessional and needs to learn some patience.

Loving the new look and the new menu! Great work guys - all the effort was worth it, and even better, the food is delicious and affordable.

What a gem. I can't believe I have only just discovered this place. Fantastic food and service and a great ambiance. We enjoyed the guitarist/vocalist Bronte, while eating and sitting at the bar area - with wonderful back support stools! I can't wait to come back for a lunch, another dinner or when they have the functions area open with entertainment.

Gargano’s is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy incredible Italian cuisine. Excellent service and the warmest hospitality.

Thanks Dario, Mario and Aleks for putting on a fantastic dinner for The Team Parma Cycling Group 2015 AGM. The food, service, drink and even a joke from Mario at the end capped off a fantastic night. For true Italian authentic food and a great homely atmosphere, you cannot get better than at Gargano's.
Marie Broumandi
Great food , and a big choice of wine + fantastic service.

Had many functions here. Never disappointed with the food, an amazing venue and Mario (the owner) has never let us down! Definitely a great place for Italian.

Came here for dinner last night. Attentive service, cosy, inviting place.
Had entree and main, everything we ate was delicious. The osso bucco was sensational.
Only downside is it's pricey.
Daniel Capolingua
Fantastic place. Traditional italian food with friendly and attentive service . Nonna makes the past herself makes the pasta by hand. Wine list is extensive.

Awful experience at Gargano and will not be back. Entree of pizza was nice however everything else that followed was disappointing. My ragu sauce was bland, watery and did not taste good. My Mum had the fish which was adequate. My Dad had the steak and asked for it to be medium well, when it came out the steak was raw after his first cut. He told the waiter and they took it back into the kitchen, they returned with the same piece of steak that was cooked and very tough to cut through (it looked like a slab of unappealing charred cardboard - even before recooking). I was amazed that a restaurant would just bring back the same piece of food without recooking something fresh from scratch. Maybe it's just me but I think this is unprofessional. After that the once friendly owner turned sour when we were paying for our food. Will not be back after sub par experience and even worse food. There are FAR better italian restaurants in Perth.

Came here for a Kaesler wine tasting evening. Food was amazing. Love the melted cheese wheel that they used to toss pasta through. Warm and inviting place. Great for a date night. Dessert cart is also a fabulous idea.

Nestled at the heart of Claremont. Hidden gem. A little class delivering a mixture of Italian comfort food (pizzas) with the more hearty TBONE steak and veal El fungi.

Service was excellent. Wait staff was pleasant and knowledgeable. Ambience very pleasant and comfortable. The food, some magnificent and some I had better elsewhere. The pizza starters one of the best I've ever had. As an entree that hit the spot. Next arrived the main course. TBONE steak was quality. Oozes flavour and aroma that is missing in most high class restaurants and really faultless. (They did get our order wrong. We ordered medium well and medium rare. Came out well done and medium well) the veil al fungi unfortunately didn't hit home for me. Sauce was a little on the sour side and I definitely have had better. The little man came with us this time round and he polished his pasta, so it's a good one for him.

However a little edit to this review, it was a bit of a disappointment at the end when we wanted desert. We waited for about 15 minutes and no one offered dessert. The way the dessert system work is through a cart system. They roll out carts to tables and you get to pick and choose. On a crowded night, You WAIT, till your table is served. Not a good idea Gargano.....

All in all, brilliant. A bit pricey, but we all came out smiling. Well done Gargano.

The most wonderful atmosphere, delicious food and wine and excellent staff...what can I say, it's superb! Ps do yourself a favour and try the Truffle Pasta when in season x

Been here twice. While the food is nice and the atmosphere pleasant, price is a bit hefty for what you get. Please go and visit but expect the bill for something mainstream.
Shankala
Attentive and friendly service. Ordered two entree and a pizza. The ear shaped pasta and penne for the entree was delicious, full of flavour, fresh an al dente. Just couldn't justify the price for the entree with the small quantity you get. As for the pizza it was delicious, nothing spectacular. Was delighted to see a dessert cart, couldn't resist a tiramisu and profiteroles. Skip the tiramisu(I've had better elsewhere) but the profiteroles was yummy! Overall I really enjoyed my dining experience here, would love to try other food in the near future!

Choose from local delights including Foccacia breads, pecorino cheese, Tuscan Salami, Olives, grilled peppers and fresh EV Olive oil made by the owners.
AP
Food itself was good. Pizza very average, the dough was a like a "fast food" dough.
Certainly overpriced, more than $50 per person for a pizza.
Service was average, the owner extremely nice person...waiters fifty fifty, one was extremely nice, the other guy needs 2 months holidays to stress down.

Suberb. Excellent Food And Service And Will Go Back On Special Occasions Or Any Excuse I can Find

This is my favourite italian restaurant in Perth. I've been going for over 15 years now and the food and service is always excellent. The staff are friendly and accommodating. The pasta is freshly made on location every day and the wood fire pizzas are definitely one of (if not the) best in Perth. The recommended entree is a pizza of half margarita half Rosemary and olive oil - it is delicious! Save room for the desert trolly. Tiramisu is to die for!
The place is quite traditional (old school) in style which is a comfort from some of the 'trendy' restaurants in Perth. There's a reason they've been going strong for so many years. Definitely a must if you haven't been before!
Sarah
Late night meal with friends - called at 930 pm on a Wednesday and asked if they were still serving- they kept the kitchen open for us in a quiet restaurant and provided amazing food, excellent service and will definitely be going back! Thankyou!
Delicious
Came here for dinner not long ago and sorely disappointed with the food. Service was great however the atmosphere lacked lustre, very outdated decor and menu was well intentioned but sorely disappointing execution. For entre we had salami which was burned, scallops were drowning in butter, for main I had squid filed with prawns. My squid was chewy and sour tasting. All dishes were under seasoned and side salad was very bland - could have done a lot better on my own at home. Also a bill for 6 came to over $600! Money better spent at a place like Cocos or Chefz Table.

Went there today for family birthday. Food good, venue good, service good, but apart from the one waiter Dario who was lovely, other 2 were extremely rude, arrogant & abrupt. Enjoyed the sound of there own voices so much that every comment made by them was rude & obnoxious. Also, ordered a latte & got a glass of hot milk. Owner, who was lovely & extremely accomodating, needs to get rid of these two 'clowns' who r bringing down this fine restaurant.

Excellent wood fired pizzas... First time here and 100% will be going back! I'd go as far as saying they are the best pizzas in Perth!
Stu Leach
Fantastic pizza and a nice vibe. Great staff.
Senore_gusto
Love it. It can be a bit pricey with all of the extra's added in but when you can get a high quality main for around $30 it is a bargain. On our first visit we loved the food and the staff - the highlight being their Tiramasu that is to die for. All on our table agreed it was the best in Perth, in our opinion. After our second visit we can also add the Capretto is the best in Perth. The staff are great.

Nice meal and ambience. We hadn't been here for around 10 years and returned for a special night. It was pricier than we remembered but our meals and service were great.
We shared their entree pizza which was delish and then I had the linguine seafood and my husband the prawns for entree. Both were nice and a decent size for entree.
For main I had the prawns which were really nice and my husband the salmon. A bit surprised by the accompanying vegetables (roast veges and some sort of fried greens) to go with seafood.
We were full by dessert but I have to say the desserts didn't look that inspiring - a dessert trolley.
We enjoyed it but wouldn't come here that often because it was fairly pricey and there are lots of other good restaurants around in this price range.

Mario thanks for the food you cooked tonight. This is the best italian food that i had ever had. Very delicious truffle pasta and steak amazing.. I cant explain it people out there go try yourself you wont regret.. Thanks Mario

Mediochre. Nice menu - but alas, not matched by serving size, price or quality of the matching dishes. The food was, well, alright. However, the ambience and attentive staff were appreciated.
Brian
Well, it's "Italian".. This place has been the convenient 'local' Italian go to for ages for those living in the leafy green on the west side. Last night it was dressed up beautifully as usual, and the staff still trying too hard, but the food was awful - it survives as an upmarket pizza joint only. Everything else was woeful. Sad.

Last time ever. Easting out in the so-called Western Suburbs with family for son's 13th birthday and it was his choice - Italian - so we thought we would try Gargano's, having been there once many years ago and remembering a degree of formality. We cook a lot, and eat well at home, and know our food. Yes, the table clothes are white. The entree's were ridiculous - a few steamed asparagus with a sauce, two mushrooms and my son's 'homemade' gnocchi- which I talked him into - was either homemade last month or one of those packet ones with a stock tomato cream sauce. Disappointing. The two pizza's were good but we were too exhausted by disappointment to enjoy them. The service was overly attentive, refilling our glass of cheap bad wine when we didn't want it. The deserts were standard: the cheesecake with red glaze looked very familiar, the tiramisu was nothing to write home about (I have made better) and the mousse was not at all divine. The 8 year old hardly ate anything and it came to about $230. This was an indulgence we will not repeat and I am sorry we took our son there for a big special ocassion.

Wasn't as good as my expectations, online the menu sounds amazing, the actual restaurant is lovely, white table cloths, great service, I just couldn't get my head around roast veg with seafood mains! My squid tubes were over cooked, so were my hubbies prawns. Others have commented on the great dessert trolley, for me it was so 80s.

Great night out. Food was delicious and service outstanding :)
Maureen
My favourite restaurant of all time, the service is the best in Perth and food exquisite!
Nikki
Wonderful!. Came here for a special occasion meal and was not disappointed. Great atmosphere and service was so friendly and attentive. Food was delicious (roast duck for me, t-bone for hubby). The only thing we were disappointed with was we didn't have room to choose something from the dessert trolley. Hopefully next time!

Took my girlfriend there for an anniversary dinner and it was perfect from start to finish. Waiters were really friendly and food was amazing. Will be returning :)

Disappointed. I have been visiting this restaurant for the last 10 years. It is unfortunate that it has gone downhill. It's been an upsetting turn around. The food use to be first class, along with the service. The food is now prepared carelessly, the wait staff are sarcastic, rather than friendly.

I would not recommend this place to anyone, I am saddened to write this but I want the owner Mario to realise that it has gone to far.

Lovely dinner. Fantastic, personalized service. Extensive wine list. Great quality food. Lovely atmosphere, not at all noisy. Great dessert cart, an experience not often seen in restaurants anymore. Overall a fantastic night.

Very friendly service. Was in the area and looking for a bite to eat and stumbled upon this neat little place. As we walked through the doors we were greeted by some oldie Italian guy and a couple of wait staff. Good first impression.
We were served by some guy who was both efficient but not too pushy, professional and friendly. No fault there. And there was Mario, the oldie Italian guy, very entertaining and knowledgeable of his cuisine. Our dishes were nicely cooked, everything moist and MIYM. Although the meal was a bit pricey the exceptional service made up for it.

Went there last night after reading great reviews, but to our disappointment it was a very average meal and very expensive for what you get. Our entree beef cappachio tasted like it was frozen and it hadn't completely thawed out, the parmesan on top was stale. We both had pasta which was also really average my friend had the seafood pasta and said it didnt taste fresh, maybe they just weren't having a great night but I won't be rushing back!
Josh Low
Wow.. The salmon dish I had was amazing. salmon cooked to perfection and the creamy crayfish sauce was incredible!
The owner Mario makes you feel right at home.. great food, service and atmosphere..
Jane
Food great, service awful. Me and my husband were looking for an authentic italian restaurant as we're loving italian food. We found this one. We thought: the prices are quite high but, hey for good food it's ok to pay a bit more.
The service was really bad... Maybe we just had a bad waiter but this one was so uninterested... He didn't even look at us when taking our order and our table sheet was dirty....
But for that the food was amazing. For starter I had the mussel soup which was really yummy and for main the liver, also really good. The only thing about the food that wasn't so good was the dessert...
All in all: not worth the high price (mainly because of the service) but definitely really good italian cuisine.
Trust Me
Wasn't as great as I expected. For some reason I thought this place would be authentic as Peragino's in West Perth. I did order the fish of the day and it was extremely dry and the presentation was wt? My partner ordered the spagetti marinara and he said wasn't that great. Oh well...at least we gave it a shot!

We have been going to Gagano's for years now but it has been about 12 months since last I visited. The food is always good and the service super friendly. Their wood-fired pizzas are fantastic and the desert trolley is delightful. I had the lamb cutlets on this visit while others had pizzas and fish of the day. Everyone was extremely happy and the combination of red wine and pears with the lamb was unique and interesting. If I have one complaint it would be that they always tend to over cook the vegetables making them soggy and bitter. It is a fantastic place and well worth a try and middle of the range price wise.
Wiltryanything
Good tasty food and friendly service. Had dinner on the weekend with a large group. service was good. Our waiter managed mouth watering descriptions of the menu. Food mostly delivered on promises as well. My fish was a little bit dry maybe due to our large group, but the flavour was excellent. I loved the dessert cart.

Delicious!. The first time we came to this restaurant was just over 2 years ago and the food and service is still great! We ordered a pizza to start with between the two of us and within 10 minutes it arrived to our table...delicious! Not one crumb left! Our mains shortly arrived and were equally as good...we shared the Capretto and prawn stuffed chicken breast both served with vegetables which were chosen from the specials. To finish off our night we decided to share the Bread and Butter Pudding served with icecream. Once again we were impressed. We will definately return here but won't leave it as long!

This restaurant was just...perfect! Nice family friendly environment. Great authentic Italian! Would go again!

Great traditional Italian restaurant. Good Italian food, more than just Pizza and pasta- Spatchcock and the Rabbit stew is amazing - also leave room for the deserts - they have have a great sweet trolley. the service is fanatstic- ( especially the owners wife and the wine waiter). We have been here many times & always had a enjoyable time - its not trendy but traditional - a great place to take family
Moodyfoodie
Italian and atmospheric with perfect service. The first thing you notice when you walk into Gargano's off Stirling Highway is Mario the effusive Italian owner who makes you feel like one of the family in southern Italy.
The next thing you notice is the professional aproned waitstaff who are very good at making you feel well looked after.
Most importantly, it's about the food - a wide choice of hearty Italian fare and cosmopolitan dishes.

The capretto was superb and the osso bucco the same, while the creamy vodka pasta was perfectly al dente and you wanted to find more bread to mop up the delicious sauce.

The veal scallopini was also very good and the recommended wines from the sommelier Brett were spot on.

I was lucky enough to see their wine cellar and this is an easy place in which to spend many hours soaking up the Italian atmosphere.

It's getting a little more expensive these days compared with other Australian cities, but at least the quality is there, unlike some suburban Perth restaurants with ordinary food at extortionate prices that show there's a strong chance they're descendants of convicts.

Great honest Italian food ..Mario a personality
Marco Motta
Good food but pricy and bad service. I cannot complain about the food here. It is great and surely Italian. Nonetheless the waiters were stiff yet not polite, and the price was higher than the 25$ for mains suggested in the description. Try more 30-40$.
All in all a good restaurant, perhaps a bit complaisant.
Sean
2nd time better than the 1st!. My Partner & I first went to Gargano perhaps 6 months ago. It was more a random outing than a planned dinner. We didnt book, but were greeted like long lost family. The owner sat us down at a table for two, got us water & complimentary pizza immediately while we pondered what to eat.
Well, when the main arrived which was 2 different pizzas we were suitably impressed. We waited no more than 10 minutes and the place was quite full of customers.
Food piping hot, better than my Nana could make. Absolutely delicious, mouth watering fare. Well done.

2nd time we went with my Partners Sister who was visiting briefly. Again very welcoming. Complimentary pizza & water arrived in minutes.
Food this time was a little more sophistcated. Firstly we got the crumbed Boccochini had this split 3 ways so we could share it, just devine!
For the mains I ordered local jewfish, my partner got the got the goats meat, her sister got the Calamari. I have to say we wanted to take photos of it before we started.
A true credit to the team at Garganos. We also got a good bottle of wine to share. Total cost $200 for 3 people.
Excellent friendly & helpful service, great atmosphere & lots of fun too.

Next time Im going to have a go at their fantastic looking dessert cart.

We had a great time & a great meal. Mario the owner/chef is a real entertainer. A great experience.

Great food and service.

Please do something with the decor - move out of the eighties and jazz it up a bit. Make it interesting - please
TasteTravelTalk
We began with a thin crusted pizza with tomato paste and cheese (not JUST pizza with tomato paste and cheese) Of course you can imagine how simple yet very aromatic and delicious it tasted, because it was authentically Italian. I was very pleasantly surprised.

Likes: home-made gnocchi, generous serving of seafood in pasta dish; Value for money: average; Overall: decent suburban Italian restaurant, good for families but too pricey to attract uni students
