Review Wah Kee Restaurant - Clayton

Ivan Wolfy
Home made cooking style. Healthy and use little oil. Taste average but portion is reasonable. Very friendly and nice. When busy, your order will be ready in about 35 minutes.

Service is great. Food is great. Nice and spatious. No complaints

I have visited this delicious restaurant for many years and made a last visit a few weeks ago as it has now closed. It was an institution to many Malaysian and Singaporean students as it reminded them of the authentic flavours of home. This place will be sorely.missed and unfortunately a victim to rent hikes.

Wah Kee is back and better than ever. Interior is refreshed after the fire. All the staff and chefs are back. Lunch specials we ordered were the same high quality as always.

Yay, they're back. Been coming here for over 2 decades. In a road full of Asian food, this is my fave. Simple and great taste. OG used to be: Fri night, Movierama video hire, Wah Kee for dinner Update: Boo. They've gone again. Shutdown. Mama San said they may try to open again in Springvale, where the rent is easier

Had dinner here with family, the food is average, service is bad, we asked the old lady (waitress) , which food she recommended, and she answered very rudely, she said depend what we want and she can't tell us which one to order. Very disappointed, we will not eat here again in the future

Went on there to try something new and ordered an LK Mee. But they lady suggested Mego Reng saying it;s busy hour and LK mee will take really long considering busy hour. I agreed and ordered a Spicy Mego reng for take away. To my surprise when I tried at home it was stale, no spice at all and un like any good megoreng. The place was busy though and the lady at reception seem semi nice , but the food was not palatable at all

Great place love the food and special service from Judith. We have been eating from here with our family for 15 years. Chicken ribs and the duck are my favourite and must try. ;-)

If you are searching for a good reliable Malaysian hawker food, this is the place.<br/><br/>I've been trying new Malaysian restaurants, but always come back here due to its reliable standard and authentic taste.

Wah Kee has been around since 1988, Mum actually remembered this place from when we used to live in Clayton many years ago. The food is good with large portions for the price and the staff are friendly. Have to say that even though it is a long drive for me now, I would totally come back here, especially for the roast duck which was tender (falling off the bone), juicy without being greasy, and with perfect crispy skin.

The vegetarian selection here is amazing!!!!!! The place also has a wholesome atmosphere, with the service being excellent as well. Highly recommend the veg mee goreng! The tofu is so good and there's potato in it too!

I love the Malaysian food here especially the egg gravy noodles with seafood, they also do a very nice fish head noodle soup but this is always a special . The owner here is very lovely and welcoming, we have been coming here for years

My favourite place for Chinese food in Clayton. Been for dine in and also take away. They’ve been around for as long as I can remember. Meals are decent portion size. And always use very fresh ingredients. My favourite is the lemon chicken which is the breast piece and scezuan chicken and the special fried rice is super good here.

Went recently and ordered the Singaporean fried noodles and hot and sour soup. They recently just opened after being closed due to reconstruction so I decided to check it out. Singaporean noodles tasted nice but not like the original flavour as it had no curry paste taste. The noodles must have contained a lot of MSG as both my friend and I were very thirsty after the meal. Hot and sour soup was very nice and flavourful. Food was served quite fast and customer service was nice. Interior was just like an ordinary home run restaurant.

The teochew style braised duck is so amazing, meat melted in my mouth. The wa tan hor is spot on, wok hei evident, egg gravy light yet punchy. The ais Kacang, ok anyone who reads this review must go and try their ais kacang. The shaved ice is as soft as a new born baby’s cheeks , or a falling ❄️ snowflake. Very good. Don’t expect this place to be your hipster, yuppie or contemporary instagramming joint. This is a classic restaurant, for serious eating. Toilets are incredibly clean! Thumbs up!

Wah Kee is your typical local restaurant with a modest fit out and decent service. <br/><br/>We ordered the:<br/><br/>Curry laksa - jam packed with flavour and featured a well-balanced broth<br/><br/>Char kway teow - slightly underwhelming with a lack of wok hei flavour<br/><br/>Overall, we feel that there's better food to be had in Clayton especially given that the pricing here is a bit above average for the year.<br/><br/>Follow us on Instagram: @alwayshungryformore

Back in business after a year and still good! The only thing is that if the restaurant is a little busy, one may have to wait a while (but not excessively) for the food. Friendly and nice service. Will return.

Went to Wah Kee tonight for a birthday dinner. There were 14 of us and no one left unhappy. The food was delicious and the staff were great. Haven’t been here for many years, but will definitely be back sooner next time.

Went to Wah Kee recently after it has been reopened after its kitchen fire. Ordered some dishes & hokkien fried noodles. Love the noodles. Salted egg ribs were also very tasty and the sizzling tofu and gulai pineapple with prawns was very flavourful . The ice kacang is good but wish they had proper cendol in it instead of green jelly. We ordered the banana fritters for the kids and for $10 found it very steep for 1 banana and ice cream. Overall, we love the food here but I think some of the portions should commensurate with the price.

Went to Wah Kee this past weekend for a quick home food fix. I ordered the cha hor fun (wat tan ho) and was served within 15 mins of ordering.<br/><br/>Pros:<br/>- The egg broth tasted authentic, in fact I found it to be the right amount of starchiness, which I liked because some places go overboard with the flour and end up making the dish too heavy.<br/>- Lots of veggies<br/>- Friendly service<br/><br/><br/>Cons:<br/>- The noodles lacked the wok hei (smokiness?) of traditional Malaysian stir fry dishes.<br/>- They substituted the fish cakes you would normally find in this dish with actual pieces of fish, and only two very small pieces at that, which was a bit strange and didn't really add anything to the flavour of the dish.<br/>- Shop ambience is a little dingy-looking from the outside. <br/><br/>Overall an okay experience for a reasonable price. Can't say it's my favourite place for Malaysian food, but I'd come back again to give the other dishes a try.

Fantastic food always.<br/>going since 1999 !Lovely customer service.<br/>Friendly staff, Vegetarian Friendly! I will always recommend me<br/>This place to my friends and family!

The service was nice, friendly staff run by Malaysians, if I'm not wrong. I wanted to like the food as well, but sadly the fried rice disappointed me. Kind of bland, palatable but not particularly fresh, few ingredients. I may be back to try other dishes, but only cause it's really nearby.

Wah Kee is located at the heart of student centric Clayton town where cheap Asian cuisines are in abundance. It is an upscale from the usual $10 per dish Asian spot. Here patrons could dine in a quiet environment without worrying about getting asked to move seats half way through their meals.(Yes it happens). Dishes are priced around the $13 mark, and deservingly so. My nasi lemak was decent, I didn't struggle to finish it. Duck rice was not bad too. The service made us feel so welcome that we stayed for dessert. Gula Melaka Sago pudding at $5 a pop, delicious! Don't be freak out if you see huge groups of patrons coming out of the toilet. It may look like they just teleported here via a pot key but sorry to disappoint HP fans there's actually a back entrance near the car park.
Mamaknowsgoodfood
One of my favourite Malaysian Restaurants. Authentic and Tasty. I highly recommend all the stir fry noodles dishes and prawn mee. Staff are friendly with attentive services.

Not only was the service under par, which I wouldn't have minded, but the food that I ordered was packed and tasted like bad airline food. Don't think I'm going back again.

Certain items here get sold out - such as the har mee and char hor fun.<br/>The char keuh teow is arguably the best in Clayton.<br/>Prompt waiting time with decent prices and reasonable service.
Willtravelforfood17
I have been eating here since Uni more than 10 years ago. A Malaysian family-owned business. The place is extremely clean and the service is friendly and quick. Hokkien mee is favourite, very authentic, and so is the lor mee, hor fun and char kway teow. Try the mee goreng as it is quite unique (with potatoes), it is one of my favourites too. If they have fish head noodles or crispy claypot noodles on special we always order them. We like to have dishes and rice at night - order the sizzling tofu, claypot eggplant, mongolian beef, lemon chicken, fried sambal ladies fingers, sambal kangkong etc. too many to list.

Had a takeaway Chang (rice dumpling) that's available during a certain time of the year. Delicious! Filled with succulent pieces of pork, water chestnut, mushroom, n beans. Perfect light easy winter dinner option. Ate in for lunch once n had the char hor fun. Very tasty! Will be back again to try the prawn mee n the mee goreng the other reviewers rave about.

Walked in here and it was dead! Literally no one inside not one customer... And when it came to staff? There was one lady there; literally didn't see another soul... So I was a little worried to eat there... But when I received my special fried rice and beef and black bean sauce it looked good. I first tried the rice and I must admit it was ok, a little bland but ok! However once I put that black bean sauce I was in heaven. The meat was beautiful veggies were cooked great. Unfortunately the higher prices compared to the other places and the bland rice let it down a little. But I will return and if I am amazed again I will up my score!

Been coming here for 10 years now since my uni days.  Food is always consistently good, authentic and portions did not change over time.  Very humble and reasonably priced.  Both hawker style dishes and main dishes are delicious.  The best MEE GORENG in Melbourne.
Wolf
Good simple food which is very tasty. We have come here for a few years now and it's always brilliant value for money. The owner is always happy to stop for a chat.

Not very Malaysian.<br/><br/>Drinks menu consisted of nothing but alchohol.<br/><br/>As for the food menu...<br/><br/>"Satay skewers"<br/>"Sweet and sour"<br/>"Spring rolls"<br/><br/>The type of food for people who don't know Malay food.<br/><br/>The price was steep too.<br/>

Consistently great food. We have been coming to Wah Kee for many years and have been very happy with every meal. The food is fresh, not too heavy and delicious. Whenever we are out of the area and eat Chinese elsewhere we always dissapointed because we always compare the food to Wah Kee which is always so good. Great food, reasonably priced and nice service.

We made an order for a roasted duck with rice and seafood and vegetable combination noodle soup. This place is so cheap and quite clean on the inside as well. The roasted duck was pretty good. The soup of the noodle was good as well, however, the noodles in it was quite bland.

I tried honey chicken and beef here. The food was good with quick service. Consider this place if you want to have a good Chinese food at cheap price,

This place has one of the best mee gorengs I have tasted in Melbourne! It has become a regular lunchtime haunt, and the aunty that works there is lovely! Definitely a great place in a suburbs!

Enjoy. Great food and service, now that I've moved I don't get to eat here as much. I used to be a regular. Wish I still was, well cooked quality food.
Maria
I've been eating here for over 10 years and have never been disappointed.
DAMMIT JANET I LOVE FOOD
The food here is typical of a Chinese-Malaysian restaurant with no particular dishes standing out. The staff are friendly and the service is quick. Note that they are closed on Tuesdays.
Melbourne Glutton
Wah Kee is great for Chinese-Malay-Singaporean fusion food. Kinda miss this place because it's been a while since we've been back.

If you like copious amounts of oil in your food, this place is for you.<br/>Personally, i am suffering from severe indigestion after a lunch here.
Tthunder77
The best Chinese food in town. We have been going there for 10 years and to me it is the best Chinese food i have had ,i'm on my way there nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww :-)

Favourite Restaurant. The food critic reviews have it right! The Wah Kee offers amazing dishes every time, at reasonable prices and with a great atmosphere. The owners are lovely people, approachable and take the time to get to know their patrons. This restaurant has been a favourite for me and my family for over 20 years, and it just keeps getting better and better. Food is authentic, delicious & a winner for small dinners or large groups. Highly recommended!!

A fantastic meal great place owners owned for 12 years, communication with the owner get on her good side and everything ok, I go there once or twice a week I am a customer not the owner. <br/>Me a mate and my girlfriend go there and she always (the) owner have a laugh

Been here a few times, and stick to the Nasi Lemak Special, with the Beef Rendang. So good! I love how coconutty it is, and have no desire to try the other dishes about which I hear less than happy belly comments. On the odd occasion I venture I tried the hot and sour soup, which was lovely.
DJ
Slow service. Nothing to rave about here. I won't be returning as I wasn't satisfied with the meal after 2 chances.

Yummy & affordable!!. We go to this restaurant regularly & love it! Not flash but delicious Malaysian food, friendly staff & great service. Char kway teow is smokey, tasty & the best around.

Good Chinese. Popular place but you can usually get in which may not be the case with every restaurant in the area. Good food at a reasonable price but service can be slow.

It's alright. Went several times and the food wasn't too bad. My personal favourite is their Loh Mee. <br/>However, my only gripe is with the one waitress there. She's just grumpy. I dont really care if she doesn't offer a smile but she grunts when you try to get her attention and barked when answering my question. Really made me feel incredibly uncomfortable.
Foodmeister
Highly recommend the hokkien noodles. However, the CKT is below average.

Noasoupperson. BEST sweet corn and chicken soup EVERRR!! I always have it with a little bit of shrimp sambal, given very promtply when asked. Overall nice ambiance and friendly service.

Oily, Not worth going back.. Wondering along clayton road a friend and i decided on Wah kee. I had come here a couple years ago and since then, the decor has changed a lot giving me hope that it had gotten better. <br/><br/>We decided on a banquet which was only $22 a head, however when asking whether we could change the drink included to something (that was actually cheaper) we were sternly told no variations at all). <br/><br/>The dishes included: <br/>> Spring Rolls - They were quite oily but very tasty! It was a mix of pork and celery and other chives. <br/>> Wonton Soup - They skins were stale ...<br/>> Fried Rice - Bit oily but ok. <br/>> Char Kuay Teow - Oily but loved the little bits of crunchy pork/beef<br/>> Wakee Meat Mix - Generous portions this was well over cooked making the vegetables soggy<br/>> pineapple fritter - oily but crunchy! Wish somewhere would use real pineapple instead of fried pineapple. <br/><br/>I definitely wouldn't come back, even if it was cheap. Its got a great layout and feel but not worth eating all that oily, average food.
I Heart Food
One of the best versions of nasi lemak I've had and their claypot vegetables with tofu is just amazing with a lightly flavoured sauce the taste and texture of the vegetables are the hero of the dish, as it should be.
Chris
Oh dear.. I wanted to like Wah Kee. I did. I just couldn't. Gave it three or four chances. Tried different things each time, ranging from the waitress-recommended house specials to the roast pork. The food ranged from okay to terrible. Service was fine for a suburban place in that price range. Couldn't fault it. Couldn't fault anything but the food. Oh well.

Wah Kee Wah Hoo!. I don't really understand the $$ symbol on this listing because Wah Kee is good food and terrific value. <br/><br/>We went there on a busy weeknight and enjoyed friendly, attentive service and good food. Traditional choices (nice satay sticks and Prawn crackers) combine with more authentic Hawker style Malaysian noodle offerings.<br/><br/>We chose a main meal each to share with some lovely coconut rice. Main point; servings are generous! We didn't really need a meal each. Salt and pepper calimari (the new staple seafood dish!) was peppery and tasty and the duck nice and rich. Crispy fried chicken in a sauce; delicious!<br/><br/>There were balloons and nice table-cloths for the two reserved birthday tables in one corner, and a simple, no-fuss atmosphere with good food.

Not bad. Some dishes are great, some are just average.<br/>Overall the experience worth the dollar, but unlikely to be visiting on a regular basis.
Maggie Law
Really good service, Lor Mee and Claypot Noodle is really nice.
Jason Hornbuckle
Had the Cha Kueh Teow for lunch. Best I've had since I was in Malaysia. Can't wait to go back and try some other dishes.
Dee
Good solid hawker-style dishes. Good char kway teow (lots of "wok hei" -- the "breath of the wok") .<br/>Sublime KL hokkien noodles -- slippery noodles in a rich (but not very dark) sauce, with lots of real pork lard.<br/>The mee goreng is pretty good too.<br/>Home made barley water is a bonus.<br/>The serve of prawn crackers is extra generous.<br/>There is a minimum charge of $10/head.<br/>All in all an excellent way to get your fix of Malaysian and Singaporean hawker food.
