One of my Chinese friends took me to this place. Overall very good food and service with acceptable price. We had dumplings and stir-fried mains. Entrée chicken with chill oil was amazing. Next time maybe I will try some traditional Sichuan mains since I love spicy food as well.

Not always a big fan of Chinese food, but I would eat here again in a heartbeat. The food was absolutely amazing. Great prices and the portions are huge. The place has a cool design too. So all in all, great value for money.

We came to modu after work with a Chinese colleague and he highly recommended this joint and told us the food here are extremely nice, and I totally agree after dinner that it is worth driving all the way here.

Love the xiaolongbaos here at this place. I don't know if they are real Chinese authentic but it just tastes awesome. Maybe it has mixture of Aussie touches to it but I guess fusion makes it even better
In love with this place- the interiors, service and food are consistently amazing every time I visit. The fried chicken is a must-try as it is way better than KFC- juicy and crisp.
for now,its my favorite restaurant in Melbourne. my hometown is Shanghai, Modu is a nickname of Shanghai. they made a very nice Shanghai cuisine. But I don't understand why they change their menu to Cantonese cuisine now...
Had my anniversary lunch here today and I am delighted to say that our experience was fantastic! Firstly, the service was prompt and professional and the staff seemed like they genuinely cared for our experience. We used the groupon voucher for an all-you-can eat yum cha experience and let me tell you, it was definitely worth what we paid for. The har gow was juicy and succulent, making it the highlight dish of the day. I highly recommend Modu if you are able to grab the groupon voucher.
Had the all-you-can-eat yumcha using a voucher. The lovely waitress that served us provided good customer service and was friendly; we were well looked after. Yumcha was stock standard but definitely decent quality. For a Friday arvo, the restaurant was fairly busy which gives us a good peering at what other patrons ordered 😅 Will be coming back for their main ala carte dishes next!
Location is convenient and easily accessible by public transport. Staff were friendly and welcoming and there was a variety of fresh food available.
Ordered the special fried rice, xiao long bao and vegetable dumplings with chicken broth
I had it all delivered and the broth had seeped out of the package. However, the quality of the food made up for this mishap.

The services here were fantastic. They even asked us the suggestions for meals when we paid the bills. The buns were definitely the best ever I have eaten in melbourne. But other 2 food are way to spicy. Maybe asking the customer the spicy level first will be better. Overall was good! Will come back for the buns again. Love it!
Delicious! Very happy to have finally found some decent Chinese fare in Clayton! There are quite a few Chinese restaurants and take aways found on Clayton road, but unfortunately a lot of these are quite underwhelming. Modu was delicious all the way through the fried rice, noodles, dumplings, and kung pow chicken. Kung pow chicken is actually very spicy and requires an experienced palate (if you're unsure, I'd say go for a milder option). Steamed pork dumplings were very well made and delicate - quite impressed with these actually. Shanghai fried noodles and Shanghai style fried rice with salted pork were tasty, no issues here. Prices are not vastly different to your typical Chinese take away restaurant.
I did get uber eats for Modu, but would recommend a dine in option also as Modu has clearly put effort into a modern decor.

It is a restaurant with a clean and clean image. I really enjoyed the dumplings. But fried rice was not good. I recommend dumplings. And customer service is so so....
Have been here a few times now and can confirm that the food didn't disappoint. The portions are definitely enough for two and the food is beautifully prepared with flavor that packs a punch with every mouthful.
Definitely a big fan of the chilli chicken and their fried rice. The kung pao was beautiful too.
Have been extremely full from the entrees and mains on both occasions that I've been there but definitely want to try the dessert on my next visit.
I thought it was traditional Shanghainese food place from the restaurant name, but I believe they provide wider range of dishes. The crispy skin duck probably will taste much better if with more sauce. The wagyu beef was bit overcooked, so it was chewy and also bit salty. All other courses were ok but can't say spot on. Well decorated restaurant in Clayton area, and the staff were friendly. It's an OK place.

Couldn't fault it. The Xiao Long Bao, the Chicken Fried Noodles and the Chilli Prawn and Pork Wonton were excellent. All three items were brought out efficiently and the staff were friendly and accommodating.

Modern asian restaurant served by a friendly staff. Xiao loong boas are done very well - the texture and thickness of the skin is just right and holds the soup well without tearing when lifted off the bamboo containers. The meat is lovely too. I’m just glad that there’s soup in them as some places just don’t seem to get it right. Noodles are flavoursome as well. Great place to come for delicious dumplings at a reasonable price if you’re in the area.
Absolutely starving and saw this restaurant. The food was better than expected, usually a done up restaurant lacks in the food department but we were pleasantly surprised. The soup buns were soupy and delicious, Shanghai noodles were flavourful and not too oily. We also ordered the dry noodles that were really tasty but a bit too oily same with the vegetable pan fried dumplings, the vegetable filling wasn't flavourful enough so you could really taste the oil, even with vinegar. Either way, good food and will be back again
Great food, super clean and ambient environment. You know you're at a fancy Chinese restaurant when there are no condiments or tissue boxes on the table. The Shanghai steam mini buns are fantastic. Shanghai sir dry noodle was also very authentic.
We stumbled on this place as our favourite dumpling place was closed on New Year’s Day and there weren’t too many other options available on a public holiday.
Some say that it must have been fate that brought us to this restaurant as the food was spectacular. Traditional Chinese street food which has been raised to the next level. Using fresh ingredients and combination of spices to create these mouthwatering morsels of food.
The only minor fault on this experience was that they forgot to bring out one of the dishes we had ordered until we had finished eating and had asked for the bill.
This place is ok. Was very modern looking I must say I love their grey wall to ceiling tiles. Ordered crispy duck, Singapore noodles and dumplings. The waiter didn't understand English so was frustrating when I asked for cold water and got warm water. The duck was ok-ish had heaps of bones wasn't much meat. Annoying part was they had the doors open in 35 degree heat so I had 3 blow fly's hanging around my food I had to keep my food protected the whole time was very frustrating.
So happy that Modu has opened up in Clayton. It has made my lunches more exciting. Love the dumplings, crispy prawns and the shanghai stir fried noodles
We went looking for a dumpling restaurant, seeing that the ones we used to eat at are no longer present. Heard from friends that ping’s were good. However, we stumbled upon modu, which looks new and rather nice for the area. Decided to give it ago. Definitely made the right choice giving it a shot. We ordered five dishes. The half steamed and half fried dumplings are fantastic. It is has element of crispiness from being fried and soft and chewy from being half steamed. The dumpling itself was very juicy and flavors were all there. The xiao long baos were juicy and flavorful. In general the dumplings were good. Shanghai fried noodles were average. The was also average. But seeing that we order five dishes and drinks for a total of $54. There is not much to complain about. Good food and decent prices.
We have ordered croaker noodle, Shanghai smoke fish and stewed pork ball, the Shanghai chilli noodle was given to us as complimentary dish.
Shanghai smoke fish can demonstrate the quality and authenticity of a shanghainese restaurant, creating an authentic smoke fish is often difficult to achieve because of the limitation on accessing fresh ingredients, however MODU has done an amazing job in creating such authentic dish!!! I have never tasted anything like this in Melbourne, a must order dish here!! Then the croaker noodle, this was the reason I decide to come here, and it didn't fail, look I have managed to finished he whole bowl of noodle soup! Very tasty! Strongly recommend but there are tiny bones attached to the fish fillet, unless you grow up eating this type of fish like me, it's no drama to me, but others might find it annoying, just a heads up. The soup dumplings was awesome also.

A new Chinese restaurant in Clayton. Very good location, just opposite the Hongkong supermarket on Clayton Rd. Service is very good and foods are delicious. Environment is very comfortable. Also like the background music. Strong recommend xiao long bao, street foods, fish and chilli, garlic beef, green beans, xo chicken fried rice and Shanghai style Yanduxian soup. I will comeback definitely and recommend it to my families and friends.

Modu is a welcome addition to the Clayton shopping strip, with it's modern design and interior, making it feel like it's aiming for New Shanghai & Din Tai Fung status. A definite improvement over the cheaper establishments nearby.
The xiao long bao had decently delicate skin with soup inside, and was pretty tasty.
Service was a bit inattentive for a quiet period - took a while to order, but the food came out relatively quickly.
Had lunch here on an "all you can eat dumplings with drinks". Cost for 2 was $29 and we ate and drank $88 according to the menu (a total of 59 dumplings/wontons/spring rolls). The glass of wine was just ok but we had no high expectations in that area. The steamed dumplings, all 4 varieties, were very tasty - the skins were Northern Chinese style so a little thicker than you would normally find in Melbourne dumpling restaurants. The wonton soup was excellent- we tried both the plain and chilli version. The pork spring rolls were disappointing - very nicely presented and tasty but somewhat lacking in fillings. The vegetable spring rolls were very good. Service was very friendly and prompt. The decor is different from most Chinese cafes - more international/minimalist. We will return even at regular prices.

Hard to believe this place is in Clayton (not meaning that in a disrespectful way). The decor was minimalist and clean, jazz music playing, almost felt like we were in an inner city trendy venue. The staff were friendly and helpful while the food was fantastic. Generous serves (we had dumplings veggie spring rolls also meat ones we had bought a voucher for this venue from an online company). Prompt service and the house wine was ok at $6.50 a glass. They are waiting on a proper licence.
Well worth the visit and would recommend. We will be going back to try other interesting menu items other than dumplings next time.
Basically the dumpling are good even though they are colourful, just that the condiment was only bottled chilli oil not a homemade one. Shanghai noodle, wonton soup and spring roll all good too. Service was fast and friendly and the ambience of the restaurant was nice. Overall good and would go back.
The black pepper udon was really good and the xiaolongbaos were decent. The signature noodle soup was only so-so but the ambience and the service made up for it! Love the decor of the restaurant

Lovely interior after the renovations, looks out of place in the area but most welcome addiction. Xiao long baos were really yummy n full of broth probably one of the best I had in melbourne. Nice big serving for the beef brisket noodles too but if there was more beef brisket and less noodle would be perfect.

Enjoyed our time at Modu for date night - extensive menu with 100 dishes at least. Delicious food, everything was so tasty but my favourite was the century egg with tofu, was craving it! One of the best traditional Chinese in Melbourne with a cool vibe in the restaurant and proper 'spice' levels in their spice dishes...they don't turn down the volume which is how it should be when you want proper szechen or spicy Chinese. Highly recommend.
Had a wonderful meal at Modu last weekend. A Chinese fix was just what I was after and this restaurant really impressed from the outside and in with modern styling and plenty of booths and larger tables to accommodate the tribe.
You ordered by QR to the app and food came out really fast although not necessarily in the order you would expect them to. Serves were generous and flavoursome. Kellies favourite from what we ordered was the Sichuan styled noodle salad, which, as the name suggests was quite spicy (but manageable). She also really liked the Shanghai style fried fish with sticky sauce.
I went for old favourites and enjoyed the salted egg yolk prawns and (dare I confess) sweet and sour pork.
All up a really nice experience with relaxed mood and friendly attentive staff.
I was so excited dine in at Modu in Clayton. Being locals, we've previously been here for dumplings and we were so impressed with the taste and quality.

The banana prawns were super tasty, it was packed with flavours. Try dipping the mantou (milky dough) into the black pepper sauce 👌👌
Sweet and sour pork is my hubby's favourite. Everytime we're at a chinese restaurant, it's his must order dish. He loved it, he almost finished the entire plate himself.
Shanghai fried noodles is my absolute favourite noodle dish to order. The noodles were bouncey and cooked perfectly. Flavours on point 👍
If you were wondering why some of the dishes were cut off in my first photo, it's because the plates & servings are huge here 😂 definitely value for money.

'Big plate chicken' absolutely enjoyed it, the spice was perfect but noodle was a little lack of the bounciness. Probably because it was on a burner to keep the dish warm and I left it in there too long.

Food was great! Staff polite and thoughtful. My partner first time here and he thought the order was paid for through the online ordering system. But it was not.
