Review Kites Takeaway Cafe - Clayton

All my guests (every single one of them), were really impressed with the Brinjal Mojo (Eggplant, Malay style) from Kites restaurant. It was absolutely divine. Zeena and Tariq are really friendly and great cooks. I have not had that Brinjal Mojo so good for a long time, even that my wife is a great cook :-) 5 out of 5 Star rating from me.

I would say it’s the best Sri Lankan food you can taste in Melbourne where you feel like you are eating moms cooking. Owners are very humble.

Always a pleasure to drop in and have a quick Vegetarian Rice and Curry. There are several veg options all day, everyday and always served hot, fresh and mouth watering yummy!

The food is beyond amazing. The flavours, the tastes and even the smell of the food cooking, take me back to my mums kitchen. The owners have made it feel like you're at a dinner party in their home which adds to the authentic experience. I highly recommend this place, it does not disappoint in any way.

Excellent food, very friendly owners who go out of their way to satisfy you. A regular stopping point.

I frequented this cafe regularly but two very poor experiences in a row mean I won't be back. When the cafe is crowded, don't expect to be served in turn - friends come first and you can wait - and wait. I tried the takeaway option only a day ago and was overcharged, and packed off without serviette or even cuttlery. Would not recommend.

What a fabulous place for a rice and curry and Zeena and Tariq are excellent hosts. Tariq is an excellent chef and Zeena's Watalaapan is to die for.

Hot fresh & yummy vegetarian rice and curry. A good selection of curries even for vegetarians. No dry fish in the sambols and condiments was a bonus. The food was freshly prepared and sumptuous...I see myself being a regular here! Well done guys....keep up the good work.

The kottu Roti was good, vegetarian one and the chicken one. The string Hopper Chicken Biryani was good in its own way because it was the way it should be. However I didnt like the dish in itself .

Fabulous Sri Lankan take away with tasty meals. Rice and curry options great and they make the best beef, fish & chicken curries in Melbourne. Visit them at least once a week. Crunchy Hoppers on Friday evenings are to die for.

My new favourite Sri Lankan go to. Very close to my mum’s cooking. So far I have ordered takeaway rice and curry and it was very tasty. I am waiting to try the hoppers on a Friday night. Good value for money. I would highly recommend this place.

Best Curries in Melbourne. Friendly service. Very nice little restaurant. Their beef curry and eggplant curry are my favourite. Really good prices.

Food is good and tasty but not much variety. You will find Sri Lankan curries that are quite easy to make here. The female owner is good and reasonable the male owner once charged me more than what was marked on the price list.

Our go to place for a Lankan curry fix! Their lunch menu is to die for! So many veggies and sides to choose, not forgetting the papadams! Husband and wife duo cooking up a storm!<br/><br/>Zenath will take your order and remember you the next time you stop by, whilst the husband is the head chef. It’s become a must stop after a grocery run at the Clayton Hong Kong shop!

I love coming here especially for the kothu roti!!!  My absolute favourite and so much flavour.. the owners are always friendly and accommodating.  <br/><br/>Pan rolls are also yummo.. definitely recommended!

We bought a takeaway rice and curry and when I was having it I found a cooked worm in it. It was terrible. May be the okra has got it they haven’t washed it properly. Definitely not recommend.

Pretty yummy! Friendly neighbourhood shop serving warm, homemade food. <br/><br/>Seemed super popular on Friday hoppers nights. I unfortunately missed out because someone had phoned in a takeaway order for 50 hoppers on the night I decided to dine in. Will have to try again some other hopper night; the manager recommended we make a booking. :)<br/><br/>This has become my partner's default takeaway place for when we're too lazy to cook.

Food: One of the most authentic Sri Lankan restaurants around town. A number of complimentary dishes available as well. Alright, <br/>Just finished my take away kottu roti. <br/>Experience: can't believe <br/>1) I ordered chicken kottu roti, received one tiny piece of chicken that all. Seriously 1 tiny piece of chicken. Lucky it was there or I would call it just roti with few veggie. <br/><br/>2) was charged $5 for chutney!! Well I don't understand how come next door Sri Lankan restaurant gave me for free last time. <br/><br/>I don't know if I should come back! Better go to next door. <br/><br/>Thanks anyway for serving me.

Best Srilankan food in town! Food is always so fresh, delicious and has that home made feel to it. Servings sizes are generous and prices very reasonable. Love that we can help ourselves to fresh salads, chutneys, sambols and papadums - just makes the meal complete! Owners are lovely, welcoming and always ready for a chat. Constant flow of customers prove this is a hit with everyone. Keep up the good work guys!!

This is indeed a great local find for us. We had a quick Sri Lankan lunch of a meat curry (chicken or beef, but fish too was on offer) plus a choice of 3 veggie sides + rice. We shared sides of okra, beans, potato, pumpkin and dhal. Plus coconut sambal, chilli a plenty plus pappadums are also on offer. The dishes were not blow you head off spicy (although we like it that way) and the constant stream of Sri Lankan locals meant the place was THE place to be.  You could add extra heat with plenty of chilli choices.  We shared a traditional watalappam for dessert which was delicious. The friendly owners were so welcoming and the price so good ($9.50 per plate) that we will definitely be back.  Friday night is special hopper night where you have to book and there are 2 sittings (its not a very big restaurant). The owners get in a special hopper man to whip out the hoppers. We have to come back for that!

Its a fantastic little place with delicious food. Customer service was excellent. We went there for the first time for my sisters birthday. We ordered Chicken Kothu was $8.90 and Nasi Goreng $12.90. They are decent size potions. It was sooooo delicious my mouth is watering even now :) <br/>The chef was so nice, he has asked the staff to bring in a little piece of cake for my sister's bday..it was a surprise for everyone.<br/>Friday night they make Hoppers so I'm gonna go there again, very soon!!!<br/>We also bought the dessert (watalappam) - a square shaped one that look like caramel slice..I regret buying only 1 :D<br/>Just under $40 for 3 people! LOVE IT

Nostalgic food from Sri Lanka.. Absolutely awesome variety of Sri Lankan Malay cuisines that brings back old slave island street food culture to Melbourne tickling taste buds and old memories of Colombo. One of my favourites are the ox tripe and the manni pittu. Great friendly service and flexible in catering to suit personal requirements.

Will be back. Decided to try this place as I grew up in Singapore and am used to spicy food and curries. I have a lot to learn about Sri Lankan cuisine but the special today was biriyani which is a dish I am familiar with. <br/>You could choose any 1 meat and 2 veg curries to go with it. I had the beef curry, eggplant and a pumpkin curry.<br/>All were delicious. The beef curry in particular was amazing. It was lean yet tender. The vegetable curries were among the best I have had. Not too oily and well flavoured. <br/>I also had the rose water milk drink with basil seeds. In Singapore we call it bandong but my Sri Lankan friend said they call it faluuda. It was a nice dessert and drink in one.<br/>I will definitely be back to try more dishes!

Surprisingly Great!. Friendly staff and nice food.. The beef curry in particular rings all the right bells. Will be back soon for sure

Authentic Sri Lankan food. I highly recommend Kites if you are after Sri Lankan food that tastes home cooked. W,L & I tried the Malay beef curry, sambal and eggplant pahi accompanied by string hoppers and godamba roti . All three were delicious but the eggplant was a standout, with the perfect combination of spices, onion and oil. Make sure you check this lovely little restaurant out when you're in the neighbourhood.
