Review Choi Palace Bbq Restaurant - Clayton

Vanessa Wong-Lee
Great food here. We ordered the egg noodles with 2 roasts(bbq pork and roast pork). The noodles were quite generous and the soup was just the right flavour. Love their roast pork as the skin is so crispy and the meat is tender. The bbq pork was okay, had a herbal aftertaste. If you're looking for congee, their shredded pork and century egg is amazing. Well made.

This used to be our go-to Chinese roast takeaway place but we would not be returning or recommending. Called in advance for some fried rice and roast yet still ended up waiting half an hour in the restaurant. Roast duck was given in random cuts, roast pork was cold and tough and had a strong smell that I could barely eat it. Fried rice which we waited half an hour for was just warm. Complained to the restaurant abt the food and was told that ‘something was wrong with their rice’ 🤷🏻‍♀️. Poor service and honestly I’ve never felt so disappointed after ‘eating’ a meal worth over $50.

A place for no frills eating. In saying that, it has one of the best roast duck in Melbourne! Duck was marinated well. Meat was juicy and not overly roasted. Great friendly staff as well. The sweet and sour chicken was decent too. Defnitely a place to go of you are after roast.

DO NOT COME HERE!!!! Not your usual asian joint where the ambiance and service is a bit bad but food is good. THE AMBIANCE, SERVICE AND FOOD IS TERRIBLE!!! Bad service, waitress didn't even utter a word or smile or anything! Took order and left. The combination noodle is the worst dish. Sauce tastes like they scooped a cup out of the dirty fish water tank in the kitchen. I would rate no stars if I could.

The roast duck and roast Pork with rice was fantastic! The skin was crispy and the gravy was good. The Pipis with XO sauce was also nice, except that I would have liked it a little spicier.

Best Roast duck in town. Been here multiple times always satisfied. 10/10 for the food they display. tried their other menu not as great so rarely order their other menu just the display one.

One of the two oldies in Clayton culinary scene (the other is Malaysia's Garden). Specialising in Southern Chinese/Cantonese style food, this resto will not disappoint. Recommended.

Family owned restaurant with good roast meats and roast duck. The wanton soup was disappointing- only 3 miserable pieces in a bowl. The air conditioning wasn't working well though when we were there on a day that hit the 40s.

Authentic chinese food with consistent quality and friendly prices.

I ate here with my wife and kids, we all got food poisoning the next day. Avergae food, nothing special but avoid if you don't want to get sick

Went for lunch with my family. Extremely disappointed with all the dishes we had. My baked pork chop rice was almost inedible , pork chop was overcooked with burnt taste which could not be masked by the tomato and cheese sauce. The mixed grilled bbq meat with tofu, vegetables on rice lacked taste, instead of serving proper pork cut, they served what tasted and looked like left over bbq meat off cut that they could not sell the day before. We ordered a plate of steamed Choi sum and it was only luke warm and with only small amount of leafy green parts, we were given mainly stems of the vegetables. Ordered mixed roast duck and crispy pork on rice, it was ok, but many shops can do it better.
Will not return again.

Possibly one of my favourite places in Melbourne to get special fried rice! Especially with crispy pork and duck. That's always my go to option when I'm at Choi palace and I can't go past it. Minimum on card is $35 so be sure to bring cash if you are eating light. Great food and average venue.

The price is reasonable and food portion is just perfect for one people! The hygiene standard in this restaurant is high !!! Would definitely recommend this place !!!!!

Came here with family for a causal dine out night. We ordered a banquet for 5-6 people. Dishes from the menu wasn’t impressive, stir fry beef with broccoli is worst, the beef taste like plastic, probably marinated with a lot of soda powder. Tomato egg with onions, the ratio of eggs and tomato wasn’t right, too much onions and tomatoes, barely found much eggs in the dish. Steamed abalone was replaced by steamed scallops. The scallops isn’t fresh, the vermicelli wasn’t prepared well, it’s dry and stick together.
Roast duck is the only dish that’s alright, nothing to complain about
Portion runs small. Guess the affordable price is what it got to offer.

Restaurant has a pretty asian atmosphere and is family run, however prices are super affordable and make for a good feed. I recommend getting their most popular dishes like the roast pork and roast duck, only because it’s delicious and is great value for money.

Would definitely come here again for the duck!!

A basic restaurant with heaps of Asian delights. The food is well priced and affordable. Open a little later than other places. I really enjoyed the wonton noodle soup

Standard Chinese fare with a pretty vast menu. Service is always prompt, and meals come out quickly. Plenty of seating inside to enjoy your meal.

Unfortunately unimpressed with this Chinese restaurant. Each dish ordered was mediocre at best, which inevitably does not compare to some of the other Chinese restaurant talent in the area. Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce was slightly bitter, excessively watery, with thick choppy pieces. Fried rice was dry and bland. Black bean beef was rubbery and heavy on vegetables, light on meat. The honey chicken was an absolute disaster, with the takeaway option being prepared with the honey "on the side" in a separate take away container. When the honey is poured over the chicken, as you can imagine, the chicken becomes wet, soggy, and unappetizing; and unlike any crispy honey chicken goodness that you would typically expect. Will not return and would not recommend.

A late night feed, unfortunately for me they ran out of roast pork, roast duck and soy chicken. Tragic. Also a good sign that their roasts cycle out and you get meat that was made that day.

As they had BBQ pork left I got them to make me a BBQ pork omelette. There were small pieces of BBQ pork and sweet onions in the mix but once you add their chilli oil the magic starts to happen. I think I had more chilli oil than BBQ pork, it was pretty damn good!

I've had dinner here once before and you can get a wide selection of tasty dishes to share without breaking the bank. My auntie and mum would sometimes get roasts here, the duck being small but cheap. Just remember to pack some of their chilli oil.

Had the bbq duck and roast pork on rice. The roast pork was cold and the skin was not crispy. It was also dry. The duck skin was also not crispy and the duck meat was also cold and dry. The rice was hard. Will not be back.

Based on the roast meats alone, Choi Palace ranks pretty high up in my list. A somewhat old-looking restaurant that looks like it’s in need of some love and care, Choi Palace is a typical no-frills Cantonese eatery. Service was surprisingly friendly and prompt, and they were very obliging in granting my request for a leaner and burnt cut of BBQ pork, and my friend’s request for a fattier cut. The roast pork had a beautiful crackling, and both the chicken and duck were tender and flavourful. It might sound blasphemous, but you didn’t even need the plum sauce to go with the duck. When two Hongkies praised the roast meats here, you know you’re in for a good thing.

A u t h e n t I c HK style food. Not for those looking for a nice modern clean atmosphere with great service...
This place is just the right amount of dirty. I feel like I'm in the streets of Mongkok. Foods not the best quality either but better than average, free 例湯,great 辣椒油, its the little things that count. Love it. Come here once in a while and reminisce

Tried to find congee for take away this morning for my sick daughter. Went to a few dumpling places.no luck. crossed the road and there..found it at Choi palace. Might as well tried the BBQ and roast pork. Place was ok, service was fast, staff was nice (unlike some other China restaurants). But WOWWW, the BBQ and roast port are surprisingly very good, and that chilli oil (have to buy the big packet next time!). YES!! We found one good BBQ pork place near house. Definitely will come back many many times.

I personally think this place should receive a slightly review rating score as the food has been excellent every time I visited. The roasted duck is among the best that I have had on Melbourne, and other dishes were also very delicious. Yes it's probably not the best choice if you were looking for a restaurant with nice atmosphere and great service. But if you want genuine Cantonese cooking? This is the place.

Had mixed roast on rice and it was delicious. Crispy pork and roast duck are to die for. Service was good! Highly recommended. Service was good with rooms for improvement.

Been there many times this year and what I can say is Choi Place might be one of the best Chinese restaurants on Clayton Road. I love having "roasted duck" and "BBQ pork" on rice. Make sure you ask for their "chili oil". That will male your meal much more enjoyable. For he service, do not expect much....please focus on the food only.

Don't tell anyone, but the roast duck and roast pork here is pretty darned good. So glad it's my local. Go to dish: duck and pork with dry tossed egg noodles. Sinfully good.

Quick easy cheap and very guilty pleasures! There is no calorie counting at Choi's but there certainly is a great selection of chinese favourites. As you peek into the window your eye gets drawn immediately towards the shiny and glistening and crispy roast duck, crispy pork and bbq pork hanging on the hooks and you know there's good eating inside.

Chois is Clayton's version of Pacific house good Chinese food that won't break the wallet. Some of my favorites are the mixed roast on rice, salt and pepper chicken ribs or pork, beef chow mien, char kway teow, as well as the flat rice noodles in egg gravy with bbq pork. All of course seasoned with their smokey and aromatic chilli oil.

Chois rocks and is definitely a fan favourite amongst my group of mates.

Had a great cheap and filling dinner at choi palace! The staff were very fast to serve and clear the table and I would definitely return for a satisfying meal.

The roast pork here is absolutely amazing!!!!! Been a regular here for years just because of their roast pork. Will always take away a box of yummy tender crispy melt in your mouth roast pork. And you got to eat them with their chilli oil too. Fantastic combo.

Good food not worth the bad service.. A group of us from work get dinner takeaway from them everyday. Almost everyday there is a stuff up with the order and the staff is rude beyond belief. The food is good but not worth the hassle of explaining your order over and over and OVER every single time and then still getting it wrong.

Not enough the service to be lousy, now a new policy is implemented; no slipt bills and minimum card charge is $30.00, based on the prices they charge you may need to eat a lot, or arrange with your friends who will foot the bill.
This place does not worth to waste your time, instead cross the road and you will find a place called Wah Kee, it is much better. I did it and do not regret.

Roast duck was skinny and extremely greasy, their roast pork was burnt and all I could taste in it was salt. Have to be the worst roast I've ever tasted. Their service was even more spectacular and disorganised than their food - first they stuffed up our phone order, then they make u hang around and wait without any explanation. And the genius girl at the counter even managed to muck it up a second time by giving our order to someone else. Finally when we had enough of waiting and demanded to know what on earth is taking them so long to get together a simple roast takeaway, the girl showed her displeasure by slapping the boxes on top of each other and throwing the sauces into the takeaway bag, face down of course, sauce content spilling all over the takeaway bag. She may not have the brain to take correct orders nor the looks to let one excuse her for being a pea-brain bimbo, but she certainly has a good throw. Stop ruining peoples dinner - if u hate the idea of serving people and can't do your job properly, go get a career where u can chuck things when the place goes belly-up.

Was alright.. The meal was OK, I can't really complain for $8.80 a main. The tables were pretty close together though and there wasn't much room to move around without getting in the way of the wait staff.

The chicken was a little fatty so i picked the chicken out, I did enjoy the sesame prawn toast and the vegetables in my oyster chicken stir fry though! Good value and cheap place for a big group catch up.

FAIL SAFE OPTION. If i was stranded on an island for 45 days and was rescued by Marines who saw my smoke fire that i had made from coconut trees , the first restaurant i would go to is Choi palace.

If i just had an awful meal from another restaurant ,i would dine in choi palace to renew my faith in melbourne restaurants.

This place has gone downhill. I used to like it but not anymore. I gave it a couple of chances since I first got annoyed with the crap meal I got, which at the time was out of character. Must have a new chef or something as I won't be returning unfortunately.

The roast duck is amazing, but only ever get it to take away as the service is pretty poor.
Jason Kan
Very nice roasted duck/pork which is on display, inside interior and eating space is abit thrown by darkness and rundown furniture, food however besides the roast duck/pork is average. Go for the duck/roast pork and you will not be disappointed
Chris
Off-putting. Walked in the other day. Walked out five minutes later. This place is filthy. It stinks. Not in the glorious way a shop specialising in roasted pork and duck should. More in the way of food that's been sitting around past its prime.

You don't want to eat here.
I Binge On Food
Dislike. I had the most terrible Chinese Crispy Roast Pork Belly (Siew Yoke) and Roast Duck. I ordered a combi of that two with rice and was very disappointed. The crispy pork is not crispy at all and the bottom part were a little burnt. Of course when served the burnt part was hidden underneath. Roast duck is too oily and I have a feeling it's not fresh. The sauce that came with it, not sure what is, I'm guessing it's either fish sauce or sweet and sour sauce, again it's not fresh. Very disappointing. Will not return for their roasts.

AS suggested a spot her friends brought her the other day. Off we headed down to Clayton for some good ol' Chinese.
