Review Kang Na Roo - Clayton

Natasha de Bakker
Absolutely amazing! Food was fantastic! Cannot recommend more. It gets super busy though so I would recommend booking a table, and if there is a line out the door you do need to go in and tell them you are there for your booking. Otherwise you will be waiting in line for a table instead. Highly recommend the sweet and sour chicken, all the entrees and the spring onion pancake. The BBQ meat section of the menu can be cooked at table or in kitchen. Keep in mind these are all full meals. We ordered way to much thinking it was like other Korean BBQ places with small amounts of meat. 🤣 Even the entrees were large. Love love love

This is a decent Korean restaurant in Clayton where there are not many restaurants that does a range of Korean food which is not BBQ and Korean Fried Chicken. The seafood stone bowl rice was well flavoured but the rice crust was a bit too burnt. Otherwise good location and the side dishes is always a plus!

Good food and very good service. Its just a little expensive than I thought, but it was totally worth it. Must try anchovies tho, it was yum.

Been meaning to try this restaurant each time we pass Clayton and we finally made it. Even though there was quite a delay at the beginning to see the menu we could see that it was a busy evening. Being short staffed, the delay cascaded with every table seated. From the pics, we ordered the Korean fried chicken with sweet chilli sauce, and beef bone broth soup with noodles. Not pictured we ordered a mixed meats platter for the stone hot plate which was cooked on our own. The portion sizing was smaller than expected but was still delicious overall. The condiments was great. The owner or front of house lady’s English is not great but food is the important criteria here. Would definitely come back to try other dishes.
hello world
I don't normally post reviews but I had to for this one. If there was an option to rate zero stars I would. The old lady who greets (or lackof) and takes orders from customers is rude and disrespectful. Clearing up our dishes that we haven't even finished nor asking us if we are finished. One night she'd provide some borderline customer service but other nights it's just horrendous. Food is OK at best. Priced too high. Not sure what I am paying for. Maybe it's the rudeness of her customer service. I would not recommend. Hope it goes out of business.

Friends and I have been coming here for over 14 years, at least once a month. Consistently awesome. Most authentic and delicious Korean restaurant in Melbourne. Been to Korea multiple times and this place brings us right back to Korea. Bit pricey compared to other places but worth it because no where is better. Must try!

Super family friendly ❤️ Really liked the ambience and food was authentic. Is a bit pricey compared to other korean restaurants but its worth it. Beef bulgolgi was lit. Idk why ppl are complaining about the old lady, she was really nice to us? I’m not expecting 5 star service at a family run restaurant 😂. And who complains about 50c??? Everyone increased their prices after Covid?? If you have no money just say that.
Kris
Expected kangaroo to be on the menu, but they have a surprising story about the name that doesn't relate to the animal. Authentic food run by the Korean Halmeoni, set in a traditional style interior with imported Korean timber features and decor. Quite reasonable, bear in mind most of the dishes are enough for 2 people.

Absolutely love this little Korean gem in Clayton. Hidden in the corner near the train station, this quiet restaurant is run by a lovely Korean auntie who is very sweet and gives great recommendations. We ordered the bulgogi in a stone pot (recommended by her) which was the best as the rice becomes a little charred on the sides - absolutely delicious. The kimchi soup was made from homemade kimchi. Sliced beef was perfectly flavoured as well. Great side dishes too - some of them imported directly from South Korea, so you know everything is authentically Korean. 100 per cent recommend this restaurant.

Nothing to shout about. Have been to many different Korean places and they are much better than this. The most memorable part was actually the staff. Very friendly and attentive. Everything else is meh.

Horrible experience. First when we walked in, the waitress attitude was very bad. Did not show any smile at all. After we ordered we waited for 45mins for the food. And the portion was very small for the price. Especially the soup must be a joke. On the menu saying kimchi and pork soup for almost 20bucks and you can see from the photo there’s only 1 price of pork!<br/><br/>We I asked to refill the side dish (fish cake)the waitress went away to get it but never got the refill. Anyways. Lastly when we about the pay, the waitress got the wrong order ..and was speaking Korean to the old granny who had to write down the price we ordered and calculate with a caulculator. The food taste just ok but pricy for the small portion and service is sh*t. Won’t recommend at all.

While it’s a homely style of Korean cuisine, they prepare and execute their dishes with higher quality than your average Korean restaurant. <br/><br/>The side dishes were plentiful and delicious - we were served syrup potatoes, kimchi, bean sprouts, zucchini salad, bean curd and a few others.<br/><br/>There are a number of more specialised dishes which I tried ordering but none of them were available – soy preserved crab, spicy roe stew, top-shell with noodles.<br/><br/>If they’re not going to have it available, just take it off the menu.<br/><br/>Speaking of the menu, a lot of the stews and main dishes are now $49.00, which is quite expensive, especially for something like bossam.<br/><br/>• Bossam ($49) – despite it being quite pricey, it came with all the trimmings – salted cabbage, preserved shrimp, ssamjang, chili & garlic. The pork belly was sliced to a good thickness and was meltingly soft. Very good, but pricey.<br/><br/>• Mushroom & Beef stew ($49) – a variety of mushrooms and a block of bulgogi beef thrown into a pot with a fair few dumplings. The soup was midly spicy (as requested) and had a nice deep, clean flavour. Very good, but pricey again.<br/><br/>• Leek pancake – good amount of leek in a crisp batter. <br/><br/>• Spicy octopus – baby octopus was cut into small pieces but still very chewy, and the sauce was a bit too sweet. Bit of a small size dish.<br/><br/>• Rice – no rice was provided per main dish, so we had to order it separately per person. Lovely and sticky, it was the purple mixed grain variety.<br/><br/>The restaurant itself is styled old school with Korean wooden trimmings, but the place just doesn’t have any windows that can be open, so it suffers from heat, smokiness and smells being trapped inside.<br/><br/>Also, we were charged $3 per person wine corkage when the menu said $2. The owner said it was a menu error, however I’m sure the $49 had recently been updated too.<br/><br/>So a bit of a mixed bag experience.<br/><br/>Maybe just come in for a quick lunch and not a pricey dinner.

A hidden gem at the other side of the busy streets of Clayton. Food tasted homely and authentic. We tried their Bibimbap, Bulgogi and deep fried chicken. Completely forgot to click pics, but will be going back soon and would update the review with pics. Staff were friendly and a lady was seen visiting each table.

Authentic Korean, none of that modern friend chicken trend (although they also do have friend chicken). The owner is an eccentric Korean lady who will scold you if you don’t finish the food, so better gets on her good side. The lunch menu (Mon-Fri) is pretty cheap and good even the ramen, but is limited (she said it’s only for tokenism, hasn’t changed the price in years). The main menu is extensive. I remember it used to be considered expensive when it just opened years back, but now it’s similar to other places. Food is definitely good, and lots of Koreans frequent the place.

We googled “Gluten Free Options” before we walked in and been told there are none. The owner doesn’t speak English well and unsure ingredients in the dish, it’s a life threatening thing for some people and more of a joke at this restaurant as she said “I don’t like you people here, you should cook at home”.
Geena
Best Korean food I’ve had outside of Korea - no MSG or additive smell, the staff are all super friendly. I don’t usually speak highly of Korean restaurants outside of Korea but this is honestly the best. The rice isn’t weird and fluffy - it’s nice and has a nice chew to it. Sometimes they don’t have certain dishes due to fresh ingredients not being available but try any other dish and you won’t be disappointed.
Michelle Yong
Food is good but portions are tiny especially for the higher than average prices. Most of the staffs are friendly and helpful except the old granny that forces us to order more food everytime. I noticed that they tend to skimp on banchans when you ask for refills, giving you 4 of instead of 6 when you first came in.
Big Belly Full
Kang Na Roo is located near Clayton railway station and it feels homely as you walk into the restaurant. <br/><br/>We ordered the beef bulgogi ($18.50) and the japchae ($16.50). Both dishes were incredibly small for the price we paid. The sweet and tasty beef bulgogi consisted of a small portion of beef slices which sat comfortably above a mountain of cabbage, carrot and onions. The japchae was delicious and flavoursome, and it’s possibly one of the best in Melbourne if not for the meagre serving size. <br/><br/>Although the food was tasty and the service was great, I felt that the dishes were too expensive for the portions of food we received. That said, the side dishes were plentiful and delicious especially the sweet potato dish. <br/><br/>Although, Kang Na Roo is surrounded by other amazing Korean restaurants with cheaper and generous portions of food, the value for money is questionable.

Been here a few times, each time the experience was worse. The lady doesn't speak English very well and her attitude was horrible. When we walked in yesterday she didn't bother welcome us, made us wait and then told us to sit down at a table, then a few mins later told us to leave because they had a booking (not sure if this is true). Another time we asked her about an item in the menu, then decided not to order but they still brought the dish out, when we said we did not order she kept pushing it on us and started speaking in Korean, just to make us give up and had to accept the dish. Another time a waitress gave me the wrong bill, we ordered 5 bowls of rice but she counted as six, when i asked she gave me "the look" and talked to another waitress in front of me in Korean, she fixed the bill but didn't bother answer my questions. Never ever going back to this horrible place with horrible service! And won't recommend anyone coming here!

Dishes are rather expensive if u compare to other places. Portions are not very big for the pricing. There is lunch menu at $13.50 but the side dishes given to one person went to 4 people.
The Hunger Trail
Food: 🌟🌟🌟🌟<br/>When the menu at Kang Na Roo says spicy, you can be assured that spice is delivered. We ordered the gam ja tang (spicy pork marrow stew) and boy did it pack a good amount of heat. In combination with the tender meat falling off the bone, this was the perfect stew for a cold winter's night.<br/><br/>Service: 🌟🌟🌟🌟<br/>Staff were attentive, informative and happy to top up on the side dishes at our request.<br/><br/>Price: 🌟🌟🌟.5<br/>Fairly reasonably priced for the quality and portion size of the dish. This was a dish shared between 2.

Kang Na Roo is a small restaurant in clayton, their meals are delicious but the prices are a bit steep for korean meals<br/>I did however enjoy the service I had received, the meals came out quick and they always refill or water bottles when we are almost finished.<br/>The bibibamp are always a great meal to eat, but it was too much rice and less meat/fillings.<br/>The atmosphere seems a bit dull, it needs to be a but vibrant.<br/>The portions you pay for the price is okay, nothing great. <br/>I will come back if I feel like Kang Na Roo again, but I might head to other restaurants with lower prices and better quality.
Kacangma
Very good Korean food including their side dishes. We had the chicken ginseng soup and the chicken with sweet soy. We will definitely go back and try other dishes again. Remember to make reservation to secure your table. It can get very busy on Friday nights.

Awesome Korean restaurant in Clayton! Yes, I will agree Kang Na Roo is on the pricier end in term of Korean food, but I think it's worth it.<br/><br/>Probably my favourite places to get budae jjigae (army stew) and the serving size is really big! The giant hotpot was literally filled with everything but the kitchen sink and it'll definitely leave you feeling full. The Naengmyeon (cold noodles) were really tasty too and it was perfect for Melbourne's summer days!<br/><br/>Perfect place for summer (Naengmyeon) or winter (budae jjigae)!

so bad🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮i never ate so bad dinner they haven't give me the small dishes and i didn't believe my friend's word and i will never believe her word any more cause she says this restaurant is so delicious but actually many people don't agree her opinion<br/>

This is one of my go to Korean restaurants. I have tried most of their soups and like all of them especially the Gamja Tang (pork marrow soup) and Spicy Boiled Chicken when there's more than one person dining. The waitress will check with you about the spiciness before they prepare it. I've also tried other dishes such as Chicken/Beef Bulgogi, Sweet Sour Chicken and really like the flavors as they are well balanced. The side dishes are beautiful especially the eggplants, kimchi and fish cakes which are my favourites. The lady who runs this place is very kind and when it's not too busy, she helps to mix/cook the food at the dining table.
Yuri Song
Love love love their sweet potato and beef ribs. Their seafood is not bad as well. Of course, do not forget friendly granny in the restaurant. In the cold days, it is good to go and hunt for hot pot there. Or, just a gathering after work.
Meg
On Sunday I went with my daughter and friend with her daughter. We ordered a beef dish and soup to share. The lady didn't want give us share bowls or plates. The beef dish has lots of vegetables but not much beef. Taste was good but very expensive for the dish. We won't come back.
Love Food
We love this place for its delicious and authentic Korean food. <br/>Started with seafood pancake which is packed with quite a lot of seafood. The sauce that comes with it is delicious but way too little. <br/>In my opinion, a Korean restaurant is good when they can nail the soon do bu jigae as it is quite complicated and time consuming to make. This restaurant has definitely nailed it. Always love this dish that they have. They give the option of mild, medium or spicy. The banchan that comes with it is also very generous and delicious. <br/>Great establishment. The only down side is the lady owner has very minimum English and whatever she said, we simply don’t understand -at all-.
Food Forme
Used to love this place. Food was good, side dishes the best I've had at a Korean place in Melbourne. Staff and boss used to be friendly but about a year ago they became really dismissive -- wonder what was going on in the boss lady's life to cause such a change. I miss their bossam and side dishes. :(
Charlotte Cooper
Food is actually alright. But the kimchi pork soup was horrible. Absolutely no pork in there. I asked if it was a tofu soup instead because it’s a full bowl of tofu. They made another one with a bit more meat and the chef was angry. She came out and stir around and tell me to look carefully. And yes, I did look carefully. There is more tofu and kimchi more than pork. And if I didn’t tell them to make another one. I wouldn’t known that it was a pork soup.<br/>Service was absolutely horrible. Didn’t even bring you water, open your own can of beer. Waited for 50 minutes to get our food. <br/><br/>If you want to eat Korean food but enjoy a horrible customer service? You have found the best restaurant in town
Terry
Serving sizes are quite small. Ordered a Beef Bulgogi that rocked up with, IMHO, less than 200g of meat. Hot plate was filled with onions and cabbage and not much more. Overall the taste is ok but nothing spectacular. The prices are also a lot more expensive than what is shown on the pics menu. $18.50 for the beef Bulgogi. <br/><br/>Lastly after asking for a refill on the kimchi side dishes I was also informed that they don't do refills. Whaaaaa? This must be the first Korean restaurant I've eaten at the don't do the kimchi refills. <br/><br/>Overall a dissapointing experience.

Nothing but praise for kang na roo! The bossam dish (pork with lettuce wraps) is definitely worth the price! The pork was cooked till it was juicy and tender but still retained a nice bite to it. The Red pickled radishes does a great job in bringing a refreshing crunch that cuts through the richness of the pork. The seafood pancake is also another one of my favorites - it was well cooked all the way through and had nice and crispy golden brown edges. I can really tell how much pride and thought the owner puts into all the menu items - quality is right up there so if you're ever in the clayton area id definitely recommend this place! Plus, the beautiful decor and interior makes for a really good ambience.

Hostile to non-Koreans?<br/>3 out of 3 staffs who served us were impertinent and ridiculously rude.<br/><br/>After we placed our order for food, a staff member came by our table with intangible English, telling us that the food we ordered would not be enough for us- when what she actually meant was we should order more food because there was an unwritten and her self determined minimum spending per pax. She would not leave until we order an extra dish when we were not informed that there was a minimum spending at the start.<br/><br/>Before we could even finish our meal, the staff came to our table and wanted to clear our dishes, when we clearly were still going with them. She passive aggressively instructed us to finish up 3 dishes while she waited by our table to clear the plates. She put a fake smile all the time when she actually wanted you out of the restaurant. Shame. Bear in mind there were many other empty tables with no customer waiting.<br/><br/>KANGNAROO IS NOT THE PLACE TO GO IF YOU WISH TO ENJOY YOUR FOOD WITH ACCEPTABLE STAFF MANNERISMS.<br/><br/>They certainly do portray the opposite of what you would think of Korean culture.<br/><br/>Rude<br/>Disrespectful<br/>Minimum expenditure (unstated)<br/>Shame

Generous and a unique variety of side dishes. You get a very homely and authentic feel in this restaurant, especially when you see them cook in the kitchen. The soup also comes out in traditional looking bowls, but have seen cheaper food options elsewhere. Not a wide variety of kbbq options that you can pick and choose from - they only had one option which was just a mixed meat platter.
Gordon Yeong
Very authentic place for Korean bbq and hotpot.<br/>Their hotpot with noodles, ham ,and vegetables was excellent. Soup base was for real!<br/>The Korean side dishes were really good too!<br/>No wonder there were so many Koreans enjoying their food here. Only thing they really need to work on(like any other Korean bbq place) is the ventilation.<br/><br/>Name was confusingly easy to remember - kangaroo lol<br/><br/>Good place:)
Youn Myat Thiri
The food is delicious but I do not think its worth it for the expensive price they charge and the small size of the portion. The service is not that bad. However, I was disappointed when we were refused to get a refill for the side dishes which was ridiculous.
Chenqiannuo1229
Quite nice service since this is the first time I tried the traditional Korean food ,however, the Kimchi soup is too spicy for me,maybe someone else will like this kind of taste.
Andyandy375
Today was my first time at this restaurant and it's safe to conclude I found the service apalling. My boyfriend and I had arrived at 2pm, one hour before the closing time for lunch (3pm). Our first impressions of the ambience were good, however as soon as the owner appeared we felt let down. She rushed us to order our food and eat. Furthermore, a group that came in with us was asked to leave just because they wanted to order kbbq and the restaurant was "closing soon" and there wouldn't be enough time. <br/><br/>It's disappointing that they would turn away customers who have entered expecting a hearty meal and a warm welcome. I can assure I won't be returning anytime soon. The portions of the food were also little and in no way matching the price we paid for. The only positive was their soondubu jigae soup.

Kang Na Roo is the second Korean restaurant which I've tried in Melbourne. It was recommended by a friend of mine. The restaurant Location is quite ideal since it is at the corner right next to Clayton train Station. The interior design is pretty traditional. For the service, I was served well from the two young Lady there. I like every thing I ordered esp bibimbap. The side dishes are very very delicious 🤗🤗🤗. However, Please note that the price inside Zomato and the actual price is different. It costed me around 16.5 for bibimbap, 16$ or 17$ for The Tofu soup, and 65$ for the BBQ set ( I found the amount of meats inside the bbq set is quite generous comparing to that one korean restaurant at Chinatown, CBD )
Ronald Utoyo
Service is ok, food tastes ok but very small portion. The price is like french fine dining restaurant. I cannot believe the price when we we're paying the bill. We got ripped off badly. We won't go there anymore.
Mai T Tran
Good Korean food in general, generous side dishes. Service was a bit slow, it was crowded when we arrived, had to wait for table for like 10' although there're empty tables but no one to clean up. It seems that hot pot and bbq are more popular here, we didn't order them though. Maybe next time.
Nhi Nguyen
I frkn love the food here. Its similar to the main CBD KBBQ but it slightly better. The staff there when I visited were very nice, place it clean and eating is very clean too. Meat that you order are usually served freshly cooked on a plate instead of having you grill it. If you're looking for a sweeter tasting KBBQ- meat, condiments and rice, then this place is one you should try. <br/>DISCLAIMER- if you book before hand since the shop can get busy especially at night, they will only hold your place for under half an hour. Best to arrive on time.
Yeekyeong Kwon
Terrible service. They refused to serve me because 'they are too busy at the moment' and they got angry at me when I asked why I was not able to get served.
Debbie Chak
Food tastes pretty good, authentic and is decently priced for the quality and portion. Not the best I had, but it's good enough. I really loved their side dishes. It's good to come in groups to order different dishes so you can enjoy a wide variety! They can get pretty busy on certain days during meal times, so bear with them! :)
HP
Don't get me wrong, the food was fresh and tasty as were the side dishes. The problem is it's ridiculously overpriced! The menu on Zomato doesn't include dinner prices. $17.50 for bibimbap?! I've NEVER had to pay that much anywhere else, especially not for such average portions. Other entrèes like the kimchi pancake were also well over $20 if I recall correctly (though I could be mistaken?) which is well over the average price (usually $10 to $15). Owner seemed polite but waitresses were quite unfriendly and seemed as if they hated being there. Judging from other reviews though you might have better service and value overall with a bigger group of people. I was not one of them, so who knows. Definitely not for lone diners.
Abigail Pinto
Quaint atmosphere, friendly staff, and an overall authentically Korean restaurant. The only thing this place is lacking is a little more originality to separate them from the rest.
Bazkaz2
Very average meal. Food not all that good Waiting a long time just to get a menu Inexperienced waitress service and come across as not to friendly
Crooked Rain
BEST NAENGMYUN IN MELBOURNE. Even the banchan was tasty. I could tell they were made with love. Slightly more expensive than some other Korean restaurants though.
Nghi Duong
I called today to make a booking for 8pm for 2 people and the person who answered the phone said okay and took my name down. When we got there at 7:50pm they said we didn't make a booking and was being very rude about it. Very disappointed in their customer service. If they don't understand English they should consider hiring someone who does and this won't lead to any misunderstanding and confusion! We decided to leave this restaurant and went somewhere else due to their rudeness!
Khpn
We had dinner here last week and ordered alot of dishes for 2 people. We ordered beef short ribs, pork belly, seafood pancake, kimchi seafood stew and some rice. All the food was awesome!! Great little korean joint so close to home. We had to take home some food. I think our eyes were hungrier than our stomachs. Great food and service.

For what's available in the Clayton area I believe this one of the best Korean places out there. Went there for early dinner and ordered LA Galbi, Pork Bulgogi (spicy) which both came in a sizzler plate and Ttuk- mandoo gook (rice cake, dumpling and shredded beef soup) with rice. The LA Galbi was marinated somewhat well but needed more flavour same with the Pork bulgogi. The LA galbi lacked in the soy flavour and the Pork Bulgogi lacked in the sweetness. The soup was nice and refreshing, it's not one of those soups that's full of flavours which I enjoyed.
Jerrin Mathew
Fresh and crispy meals with a good balance. Veggies and meat compliment each other perfectly. It could be a challenge if you havent tried Korean food, each meal is served with an assortment of condiments to compliment the dish.<br/>Do try their Soji alcohol..it has quite the bang.<br/>Recommended, especially if you are into experimentation.

FoodieCCC
I LOVE this restaurant.<br/>First of all, love the generous small side dishes, such as fishcake, sweet potatoes and kimchi...<br/>Second, love the traditional Korean flavor. Bossam was as good as what I ate in South Korea.<br/>Moreover, love the warm service. the owner is a nice and kind lady, she's always smiling~<br/>...<br/>I Love this place!!!
Gurl With A Belly
My meal at Kang Na Roo was really great. The food was very authentic and had great flavour. I was quite disappointed by the serving sizes and also the service. The staff were not very willing to help, and every time we asked for something they acted as if it was such an effort. I would come back but for the food and not the service!
Jun Lee
You can find better korean restaurant with better service other area. Foods are overpriced and overrated when you compare with their table service. Even giving this restaurant one point is not even worth it.
Ko Rea
The food was okay, however it is quite pricey for casual dining. And their customer service is TERRIBLE and one particular staff member is extremely rude!!! Will never go back there again!!!
Lois Wo
One of the only Korean places in Cayton I've eaten at since I'm more of a inner city person. Can get cramped with table space if going with more than 5 people, bowls and plates everywhere, the struggles to make all the food fit. #foodtetris <br/>Good selection of banchan (side dishes) always a plus at Korean restaurants. Ordered the sweet chili fried chicken but pretty sure they served us the sweet and sour chicken instead. Still really good flavourwise but not enough crunch you would be expecting from 'fried chicken.'<br/>Compared to CBD restaurants, the bu dae ji gae (Army Stew) was a bit lacking in flavours but the sam geh tang (Ginseng chicken soup) made up for it. <br/>The owner was really nice to us so good vibes all around. Nice place and really close to Clayton Station. <br/>Would recommend to friends :)
Gale
A rip off. Ordered a chicken bugolgi and the portion was miserable. Was oily and tasted different from usual bulgogi. Hubby ordered a kimchi bibimbab and was tasteless and ingredients was pathetic. Will not go back again for sure.
Gary Vdb
Great friendly service with an extensive menu to appease even the most fussy eater. Only down side is you might leaving feeling fat. Depending on your choices prices hoes from $24 to $100 per person
Ritu Makhija
Firstly let me say that I love the name of this place. Makes me chuckle every time. I've been going to Kang na roo for a couple of years now. And I will always return for the bibimbap! Incredible! Loved it. The service is very friendly too.
Kat_Eats_Mel
Kang Na Roo is the best place to get your korean fix. I love all the small side dishes.. you get 6! Seafood Pancake a standout. Very authentic and i will always be back!
TweeVy Ngo
An expensive restaurant for casual dining. But I finally ate a Korean pancake without feeling too much grease. The seafood pancake was crispy and tasty. The chicken dolsot (similar to bibimbap) was served in a sizzling claypot with crunchy sticky rice dished out at the base. It was divine. Serving proportions were quite smaller than average.
Artistedegastronomie
As far as Korean food goes, Kang Na Roo is my go to Korean restaurant in Clayton. I love the fact that the rice served is different to the normal, boring white rice served at other places. It's loaded with little dishes and entrees to keep you entertained while you wait for the actual dishes to come. The galbi and bulgogi is a must order and is well-marinated. The octopus bokkum stir fry is great to share with the family and when I went with my sisters, we added rice like the Koreans do to give the rice more flavour which turned out perfectly. ** This place can get pretty busy on the weekend so I recommend you call in to book or be there before peak time.
Robin Yang
Kang Na Roo is conveniently located next to Clayton railway station and has lots of parking available nearby. The restaurant interior is nicely furnished and at peak times is quite busy. The food itself is good, with a wide assortment of dishes available. The hot pots dishes are always a favourite of mine, especially when eating with a group. The seafood pancake is always a treat topped with the soy-sauce & shallot sauce. Service was not great when I visited but wasn't bad. Overall this restaurant offers a good Korean meal and one from which you will leave satisfied. <br/><br/>

I have been lunch and dinner here 2-3 time. The food in here were great but the side dish such kimchi ,bean shoot serve a bit little as if you come two person just not enough 😥.the service in here not really the best but seem alright ,Overall good!!
TresHungry
I've been here a couple of times, and each time the service was pretty non existent. The food here is decent though. I especially like the cold noodles here. It's a really refreshing dish to have in the summer. They give you a range of small side dishes like normal Korean restaurants. Out of them all, my favourite is the honey glazed potatoes. So delicious!

Yes I too created this profile to write of my worst experience in a korean resto! My first time and last!! Slow and bad service by the staff. All hardly speaks English. I asked for extra side dishes and they gave me an empty small bowl!!! Stingy service. They don't even give 2nd round of side dishes. Korchi down the road gives repeated side dishes and big portion of food. Kang na Roo portion is also too small! My 8 years old could finish one Bi Bim Bap herself. For the same price.. Korchi's portion is much bigger! I'm def not going back here!! Korchi here I come!!

I specifically created this account to write my very first review on Zomato. I was so displeased with this place - I want everyone to know about my poor experience. This must be the WORST Korean BBQ I have ever stepped foot into. Warning: long post.<br/><br/>On arrival, we were greeted nicely and promptly. However, it went completely downhill as soon as my company and I started ordering from the menu. $2 extra on top of each individual BBQ item to have a DIY BBQ as opposed to having the items cooked in their kitchen is absurd. But we went ahead with it as we wanted to BBQ. The food came out punctually... The grill top was set up by our waitress with a piece of baking paper lining. We awkwardly questioned what the baking paper was for as we had never seen this practice at any other restaurants. She briefly muttered something about the "marinade" and due to the slight language barrier, we didn't pursue further.<br/><br/>I have known friends who line their BBQs with baking paper to save clean-up problems at home. Unfortunately this life hack fell short at this restaurant and ended up stewing our food rather than crisping up our meat on the bbq. It was so disappointing, and at about $20 a pop per meat item, I was not happy. The ox tongue in particular - it felt and tasted as if it were blanched or boiled in water. Gross. Of course we complained and had another grill top set up without the paper lining. However, as soon as we munched down to our last beef rib item (the only pre-marinated item) out came the first grill top with our baking paper once again. The same "stewing" problem occurred.... RIDICULOUS!!!!<br/><br/>Aside from the food, the waitress who served us provided mediocre service. Nothing to complain about, yet nothing to give props to. <br/><br/>When we asked the older lady (whom may or may not have been the owner) for extra condiments, we could not believe the attitude she fired at us. Absolutely ludicrous! She rolled her eyes at my company and asked whether that was it? What else?? We were just dumbfounded and deduced it to perhaps culture/language barriers until we read a few other reviews here about this place.<br/><br/>All in all, food and service completely fell short and was thoroughly disappointing. I will never be back and plead for others to think twice before coming here.

This Korean restaurant is the worst I have ever experienced. Had the bbq but was advised it would be cooked in the kitchen.. If we wanted to bbq it ourselves we had to pay $2 on top of each menu item if we wanted to bbq it ourselves (which we did) otherwise we can pick the set bbq menu and do it ourselves.. Additional cost was not on the menu and I have never experienced this before! Comparing this place with the CBD, glen Waverley, box hill, Carnegie kbbq restaurants, this place gets the lowest rating.<br/>Service was not at all comfortably provided. When asked for more condiments, old lady was reluctant to provide more and then asked "what else do you want?, that's it??" in a annoyed tone.<br/><br/>Too much to say and not worth the time. Never again.

Great side dishes compared to the ones I have been to. The old lady looked rude at first glance but she's actually kind and attentive. She brought us plastic spoon and fork for our daughter when she saw the big spoon she had to use. Very nice gesture. but the waitress only gave very little water for my daughter (not even half a cup) - a bit weird. Like the rice, not standard steam rice! Surely will go again.

I love the food here, and my family loves it too. The owner and waitresses were all very nice. I called in for a last minute booking, and they still accommodated us. Lovely place, lovely food.<br/>

I'm not sure why there are so many neg reviews. This is a pretty decent Korean restaurant. We were very satisfied with the service. The owner was very polite and gives a personal touch to the service. The price is ok, and good value for the portions they serve. The side dishes are substantial. <br/>Also, the whole restaurant is clean and well-lighted.
I Eat
I went here for dinner last night with my friend. My friend rang ahead and they indicated that they do not do reservations. We arrived and waited in a pseudo hut... it was cold there were no seats. Our existence was not acknowledged. <br/><br/>The group before us who were huddled in the hut were given a table and then the waitress returned to indicate that a table would be ready in 5-10 minutes. <br/><br/>The assumption was made that we would be next right? Wrong. A group of 3 were given a table before us and when I indicated that we were next in line - they indicated they had a reservation. <br/><br/>Finally we were given a table and then we were asked if we could share a table with another couple. My friend indicated no. I'm not sure whether "Sh*tttttttt" means something else in Korean but that was the waitress' response to us was. This made me feel exceptionally uncomfortable. <br/><br/>We ordered the Combination BBQ- meat came out frozen. Food wasn't terrible but average at best. <br/><br/>You could get better service, quality and value for money for Korean food in the city. Do yourself a favour- get on a train and go elsewhere. <br/><br/>It is a real shame that one waitress can damper someone's whole night. Everyone one else seemed nice enough.

Me and my friend decided to come here for dinner, as we were in Clayton.<br/>Ordered 2 BBQ hot plates, both were beef.  However, beef was dry, lacking seasoning and I've tasted better beef before. Japchae was average, a bit pricey and small quantity. <br/>Staff were not really attentive. Had to ask them for water not once, not twice, but three times. I understand it's busy, however, a simple request like water only takes up about two seconds of their time. Kind of disappointed with that. <br/>Would not recommend and not coming back again.

Food was ok but poor service. Also food is pricier compared to other Korean places nearby. Ordered medium spicy seafood tofu soup which came out mild and bland. When asked, the waitress said it did not come with rice. Hmm. The bim bi bap we ordered was ok. The older lady waitress looked annoyed when we asked for more tea. She told us no when my friend asked for a refill of the side dishes, but then later we noticed she gave extra to the table of 2 people next to us. When it came time to pay the bill she quoted us a price out loud more than what was written on the bill ie. Indicating we should tip?! Will not be back.

Posted by WMint on Apr 4, 2013 in Eating out , Korean , Places to eat | 0 comments I was called out to dinner late at night for some Korean BBQ in Clayton, just a five minutes drive from home and knew I had to pretty my body to digest a larger than normal amount of meat. On a day to day basis, you’d probably be forgiven to believe that I’m vegetarian. But for the love of food and the sake of blogging I’m willing to try, taste and experience new flavours. Now I’ve had Korean BBQ at Clayton before but never have I dined at Kang Na Roo and my friend wanted to show me his favourite place for Korean food. Kang Na Roo is on the corner of Clayton Rd and a small side street almost next to the train station but on the opposite side. Still following me? It’s a cosy restaurant that’s large enough to accommodate a decent number of people without feeling too crowded. Since my friend was more familiar about this place than I was, I let him place the order. I was interested in trying their Bibimbap s

Food was okay, I've def had better Korean food. It was very oily and service mediocre. If ur in Clayton and looking for Korean Id try the other places down the road

Mrs. Fast. Friendly. And fabulous food. Always full every time we go there which is a wonderful sign. If you are on a tight schedule you can be in and out in an hour. Food variety is great

Nice Food, VERY Pleasant service.. We visited for Kang Na Roo Korean last week for the first time after many years of wondering what it might be like.<br/><br/>There were up's and down's.<br/><br/>The upside's were:<br/>* that the food we tried was pleasant - not spicy enough for us but tasty enough.<br/>* the staff were lovely & friendly and welcoming.<br/>* the food came out very quickly.<br/>* the location is in the heart of Clayton so easy to get to but parking is a challenge for the same reason.<br/><br/>The downsides:<br/>No Spicy Pork Bulgogi [my favourite dish] - may prevent me from going back for another round.

Queenmax. Normal Korean food. I will not go again.

Waiting for food.. The food is alright but it's not worth the wait.<br/>Not many places make you wait for water and to make your order...

Service?. Service needs to improve.. Food was alright.

Terrible Service. My friend had a dinner party here last night, there was a large group of us. Food was so-so, service was quite slow as it took them a while to top up/refill side dishes/rice when asked. We were still there past closing time, not on purpose though, but the young waitress was unable to contain her frustration, she was flicking the light switch on and off, banging stuff around while giving us the side eye and making faces. We got up to leave. While we were apologetic about holding the staff up, I think the waitress could have conveyed the message across in a less hostile way. Would not be going back there again due to their attitude.

Pork Bulgogi. Yummy

Horrible service ! The wai.... Horrible service ! <br/>The waitress said we had to order one main meal each where the menu did not indicate. Unimpressed. Overpriced food. I do not recommend.

First time here but very disappointed. We stood at the front door almost 2 minutes but the young waitresses did not give us a greeting or even a smile. Doesn't like it and never back here again!

Not the best korean food we've had but it was good. Quick service, clean restaurant, full for sunday lunch. Would go again.

Awful services , disgusting food. Waste time, waste money, never never go this again , the food is overcooked, unfriendly staff.
Eat Well
My suggestion is try everything except the dessert.<br/><br/>the owner i found was very kind and attentive to our three course meal option. <br/><br/>i eat authentic korean food in the city and this is the same real korean food.<br/><br/>pricing is difficult to discuss, the vast majority of korean eateries including this <br/>restaurant maintain a higher price but that is due to the food and effort required to make the dish. as opposed to the simpler and inexpensive food found in other cuisines.<br/><br/>its well worth coming here on a rainy night, usually empty around 6pm but you get fast attentive service. <br/><br/>try them and skip dessert

Our first time here as we are not from the area and we are very impressed. Excellent smiley friendly service, fresh, interesting, delicious and authentic dishes.. The entire place is spotless.. Very very clean, and cheap prices to boot. We feel like we have stumbled upon a gem! We will definitely be coming back!
Bob124
Poor service. From ordering, we had to wait 40 minutes for the Korean BBQ to arrive, despite it literally being a mini gas stove and raw meat. We were about to leave because we had waited so long with no condiments or water.
JiROSOPHIC
Bad food and rude waitress. Customer service was bad, especially the old lady there were extremely rude. She refuses to give us extra kimchi for side dish... We had 6 people, only had 1 small serve of kimchi. We then wanted to order and willing to pay for the extra side dish, the old lady still gives us an annoyed face... she turned around a talked to the other waitress in Korean commenting about Chinese people etc etc (we can understand both chinese and korean).... We respect the old lady but was disappointed with the poor service quality.

Very disappointed! we planned to have for dinner there today, there is no smiling and greeting. when we walked in. I think it was the owner/ manager "tried" to organize us "2 seats" within 1 seat space. we shifted the table a bit and barely just fit. however, after the waitress asked us if we would like some drinks, we said no. Seems like the owner wasn't happy about it and then asked me to sit the other side of table where had no space. He kept repeating this was the last table and his expression is telling us he is happy about if we leave, so we just have to leave.

Young waitress who served us was rude! Had to ask her for sharing plates and the Korean side dishes. Then when we ordered an extra coke, I saw her turn around and rolled her eyes. Came to collect our dishes although we hadn't finished! Amazing how a young rude waitress who forgets that her job is to serve customers can make your experience such a terrible one.

Delicious!. I've been here countless times with my partner and we are always very happy with the service and food given. The lovely older lady who runs the place remembers our order every time and brings it to us extremely quickly!<br/><br/>I've eaten at many many korean restaurants and although I can't say what their other meals are like, I ADORE their beef bulgogi and kimchi, it is the best i've had anywhere. My boyfriend's mother won't eat chicken bulgogi anywhere but here.
Its2pmbaby
Bad! Booked & came in large group. Only need to add 2 more chairs & they refused to give in. The old lady (owner?) fussed about something that made us felt more unwelcomed. Once seated, the waitress told us to order min. $15/head! We haven't even position our butts properly!! And dining with kids, they expected each little kids (kids not teenagers) to order one main dish?? Ok, so we just ordered making sure we were not given another "rules" again. And guess what, the foods came & what a rip off, they call that a main dish??? The meat was so little, pathetically filling in just the middle part of the oval-shaped hot plate. For all the bad service, unwelcoming attitudes & little foods & ran out of steam rice, we'd rather go elsewhere to have Korean food, where service is MUCH better and with a decent portion for the same price! Horrible experience.

Would go to this restaurant all the time. Then one day the prices on the menu went up and the food did not taste the same. You've changed kang na roo, you've changed!
Charmaine Bong
Just finished my first meal here. Impressed with the authenticity of the food, it's not tuned to the taste of the Western palate like many other Korean restaurants I have tried. As it is with most restaurants, you have to know what to order. Try something different in this place like the raw crab and you will be surprise at how much you like it. Service was lovely and the portions are perfect. Loved the king prawn bokkum and the modum special BBQ plate. Look forward to going back and tryin other dishes.
Nippy.nips
Rude Service. Waiters ignore you, and the old lady grumbled when ask for extra side dish.
Linh Phan
Terrible experience. Staff were alright but food was terrible. Kimchi mixed rice is about $15 and what we got was not diced meat but fat. the spice soup that we ordered, on the menu it said it came with egg, but there was no egg. We tried to ask why and what we got from the staff was "it will make it taste weird " and "its an old menu and hasnt been updated" - I felt like they were lying and unwilling to remake the soup. Never come back there again
James Thomas
Rude staff! Below par food! Make a booking and they give your table away. Better off going to Korean garden on centre road!

Every time I have been here it was good food at a reasonable price with good service but last time was sensational at a late lunch with my wife. Not many customers seemed to = more care in food quality and the quality this time was great with attention to presentation and the owner takes great care in customer satisfaction. She really looks after you. Korean BBQ at this Korean restaurant is one of the better ones. A great place to gorge yourself on BBQ and booze.

Love this place!. Been comming here for years, we get treated here very well, most times we come in a group of 5-6,, so popular now we have to book. Food is delicious, we have our favourites on the menu. Also if kids come we treat them next door at the Korean store.
