Absolutely love this little Korean gem in Clayton. Hidden in the corner near the train station, this quiet restaurant is run by a lovely Korean auntie who is very sweet and gives great recommendations. We ordered the bulgogi in a stone pot (recommended by her) which was the best as the rice becomes a little charred on the sides - absolutely delicious. The kimchi soup was made from homemade kimchi. Sliced beef was perfectly flavoured as well. Great side dishes too - some of them imported directly from South Korea, so you know everything is authentically Korean. 100 per cent recommend this restaurant.

A hidden gem at the other side of the busy streets of Clayton. Food tasted homely and authentic. We tried their Bibimbap, Bulgogi and deep fried chicken. Completely forgot to click pics, but will be going back soon and would update the review with pics. Staff were friendly and a lady was seen visiting each table.

Authentic Korean, none of that modern friend chicken trend (although they also do have friend chicken). The owner is an eccentric Korean lady who will scold you if you don’t finish the food, so better gets on her good side. The lunch menu (Mon-Fri) is pretty cheap and good even the ramen, but is limited (she said it’s only for tokenism, hasn’t changed the price in years). The main menu is extensive. I remember it used to be considered expensive when it just opened years back, but now it’s similar to other places. Food is definitely good, and lots of Koreans frequent the place.

Best Korean food I’ve had outside of Korea - no MSG or additive smell, the staff are all super friendly. I don’t usually speak highly of Korean restaurants outside of Korea but this is honestly the best. The rice isn’t weird and fluffy - it’s nice and has a nice chew to it. Sometimes they don’t have certain dishes due to fresh ingredients not being available but try any other dish and you won’t be disappointed.

Kang Na Roo is located near Clayton railway station and it feels homely as you walk into the restaurant.

We ordered the beef bulgogi ($18.50) and the japchae ($16.50). Both dishes were incredibly small for the price we paid. The sweet and tasty beef bulgogi consisted of a small portion of beef slices which sat comfortably above a mountain of cabbage, carrot and onions. The japchae was delicious and flavoursome, and it’s possibly one of the best in Melbourne if not for the meagre serving size.

Although the food was tasty and the service was great, I felt that the dishes were too expensive for the portions of food we received. That said, the side dishes were plentiful and delicious especially the sweet potato dish.

Although, Kang Na Roo is surrounded by other amazing Korean restaurants with cheaper and generous portions of food, the value for money is questionable.

Food: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
When the menu at Kang Na Roo says spicy, you can be assured that spice is delivered. We ordered the gam ja tang (spicy pork marrow stew) and boy did it pack a good amount of heat. In combination with the tender meat falling off the bone, this was the perfect stew for a cold winter's night.

Service: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Staff were attentive, informative and happy to top up on the side dishes at our request.

Price: 🌟🌟🌟.5
Fairly reasonably priced for the quality and portion size of the dish. This was a dish shared between 2.

Very good Korean food including their side dishes. We had the chicken ginseng soup and the chicken with sweet soy. We will definitely go back and try other dishes again. Remember to make reservation to secure your table. It can get very busy on Friday nights.

Awesome Korean restaurant in Clayton! Yes, I will agree Kang Na Roo is on the pricier end in term of Korean food, but I think it's worth it.

Probably my favourite places to get budae jjigae (army stew) and the serving size is really big! The giant hotpot was literally filled with everything but the kitchen sink and it'll definitely leave you feeling full. The Naengmyeon (cold noodles) were really tasty too and it was perfect for Melbourne's summer days!

Perfect place for summer (Naengmyeon) or winter (budae jjigae)!

This is one of my go to Korean restaurants. I have tried most of their soups and like all of them especially the Gamja Tang (pork marrow soup) and Spicy Boiled Chicken when there's more than one person dining. The waitress will check with you about the spiciness before they prepare it. I've also tried other dishes such as Chicken/Beef Bulgogi, Sweet Sour Chicken and really like the flavors as they are well balanced. The side dishes are beautiful especially the eggplants, kimchi and fish cakes which are my favourites. The lady who runs this place is very kind and when it's not too busy, she helps to mix/cook the food at the dining table.

Love love love their sweet potato and beef ribs. Their seafood is not bad as well. Of course, do not forget friendly granny in the restaurant. In the cold days, it is good to go and hunt for hot pot there. Or, just a gathering after work.

We love this place for its delicious and authentic Korean food.
Started with seafood pancake which is packed with quite a lot of seafood. The sauce that comes with it is delicious but way too little.
In my opinion, a Korean restaurant is good when they can nail the soon do bu jigae as it is quite complicated and time consuming to make. This restaurant has definitely nailed it. Always love this dish that they have. They give the option of mild, medium or spicy. The banchan that comes with it is also very generous and delicious.
Great establishment. The only down side is the lady owner has very minimum English and whatever she said, we simply don’t understand -at all-.

Nothing but praise for kang na roo! The bossam dish (pork with lettuce wraps) is definitely worth the price! The pork was cooked till it was juicy and tender but still retained a nice bite to it. The Red pickled radishes does a great job in bringing a refreshing crunch that cuts through the richness of the pork. The seafood pancake is also another one of my favorites - it was well cooked all the way through and had nice and crispy golden brown edges. I can really tell how much pride and thought the owner puts into all the menu items - quality is right up there so if you're ever in the clayton area id definitely recommend this place! Plus, the beautiful decor and interior makes for a really good ambience.

Generous and a unique variety of side dishes. You get a very homely and authentic feel in this restaurant, especially when you see them cook in the kitchen. The soup also comes out in traditional looking bowls, but have seen cheaper food options elsewhere. Not a wide variety of kbbq options that you can pick and choose from - they only had one option which was just a mixed meat platter.

Very authentic place for Korean bbq and hotpot.
Their hotpot with noodles, ham ,and vegetables was excellent. Soup base was for real!
The Korean side dishes were really good too!
No wonder there were so many Koreans enjoying their food here. Only thing they really need to work on(like any other Korean bbq place) is the ventilation.

Name was confusingly easy to remember - kangaroo lol

Good place:)

Kang Na Roo is the second Korean restaurant which I've tried in Melbourne. It was recommended by a friend of mine. The restaurant Location is quite ideal since it is at the corner right next to Clayton train Station. The interior design is pretty traditional. For the service, I was served well from the two young Lady there. I like every thing I ordered esp bibimbap. The side dishes are very very delicious 🤗🤗🤗. However, Please note that the price inside Zomato and the actual price is different. It costed me around 16.5 for bibimbap, 16$ or 17$ for The Tofu soup, and 65$ for the BBQ set ( I found the amount of meats inside the bbq set is quite generous comparing to that one korean restaurant at Chinatown, CBD )

Good Korean food in general, generous side dishes. Service was a bit slow, it was crowded when we arrived, had to wait for table for like 10' although there're empty tables but no one to clean up. It seems that hot pot and bbq are more popular here, we didn't order them though. Maybe next time.

I frkn love the food here. Its similar to the main CBD KBBQ but it slightly better. The staff there when I visited were very nice, place it clean and eating is very clean too. Meat that you order are usually served freshly cooked on a plate instead of having you grill it. If you're looking for a sweeter tasting KBBQ- meat, condiments and rice, then this place is one you should try.
DISCLAIMER- if you book before hand since the shop can get busy especially at night, they will only hold your place for under half an hour. Best to arrive on time.

Food tastes pretty good, authentic and is decently priced for the quality and portion. Not the best I had, but it's good enough. I really loved their side dishes. It's good to come in groups to order different dishes so you can enjoy a wide variety! They can get pretty busy on certain days during meal times, so bear with them! :)

We had dinner here last week and ordered alot of dishes for 2 people. We ordered beef short ribs, pork belly, seafood pancake, kimchi seafood stew and some rice. All the food was awesome!! Great little korean joint so close to home. We had to take home some food. I think our eyes were hungrier than our stomachs. Great food and service.

For what's available in the Clayton area I believe this one of the best Korean places out there. Went there for early dinner and ordered LA Galbi, Pork Bulgogi (spicy) which both came in a sizzler plate and Ttuk- mandoo gook (rice cake, dumpling and shredded beef soup) with rice. The LA Galbi was marinated somewhat well but needed more flavour same with the Pork bulgogi. The LA galbi lacked in the soy flavour and the Pork Bulgogi lacked in the sweetness. The soup was nice and refreshing, it's not one of those soups that's full of flavours which I enjoyed.

Fresh and crispy meals with a good balance. Veggies and meat compliment each other perfectly. It could be a challenge if you havent tried Korean food, each meal is served with an assortment of condiments to compliment the dish.
Do try their Soji alcohol..it has quite the bang.
Recommended, especially if you are into experimentation.

I LOVE this restaurant.
First of all, love the generous small side dishes, such as fishcake, sweet potatoes and kimchi...
Second, love the traditional Korean flavor. Bossam was as good as what I ate in South Korea.
Moreover, love the warm service. the owner is a nice and kind lady, she's always smiling~

My meal at Kang Na Roo was really great. The food was very authentic and had great flavour. I was quite disappointed by the serving sizes and also the service. The staff were not very willing to help, and every time we asked for something they acted as if it was such an effort. I would come back but for the food and not the service!

One of the only Korean places in Cayton I've eaten at since I'm more of a inner city person. Can get cramped with table space if going with more than 5 people, bowls and plates everywhere, the struggles to make all the food fit. #foodtetris
Good selection of banchan (side dishes) always a plus at Korean restaurants. Ordered the sweet chili fried chicken but pretty sure they served us the sweet and sour chicken instead. Still really good flavourwise but not enough crunch you would be expecting from 'fried chicken.'
Compared to CBD restaurants, the bu dae ji gae (Army Stew) was a bit lacking in flavours but the sam geh tang (Ginseng chicken soup) made up for it.
The owner was really nice to us so good vibes all around. Nice place and really close to Clayton Station.
Would recommend to friends :)

As far as Korean food goes, Kang Na Roo is my go to Korean restaurant in Clayton. I love the fact that the rice served is different to the normal, boring white rice served at other places. It's loaded with little dishes and entrees to keep you entertained while you wait for the actual dishes to come. The galbi and bulgogi is a must order and is well-marinated. The octopus bokkum stir fry is great to share with the family and when I went with my sisters, we added rice like the Koreans do to give the rice more flavour which turned out perfectly. ** This place can get pretty busy on the weekend so I recommend you call in to book or be there before peak time.

Kang Na Roo is conveniently located next to Clayton railway station and has lots of parking available nearby. The restaurant interior is nicely furnished and at peak times is quite busy. The food itself is good, with a wide assortment of dishes available. The hot pots dishes are always a favourite of mine, especially when eating with a group. The seafood pancake is always a treat topped with the soy-sauce & shallot sauce. Service was not great when I visited but wasn't bad. Overall this restaurant offers a good Korean meal and one from which you will leave satisfied.

I've been here a couple of times, and each time the service was pretty non existent. The food here is decent though. I especially like the cold noodles here. It's a really refreshing dish to have in the summer. They give you a range of small side dishes like normal Korean restaurants. Out of them all, my favourite is the honey glazed potatoes. So delicious!

Great side dishes compared to the ones I have been to. The old lady looked rude at first glance but she's actually kind and attentive. She brought us plastic spoon and fork for our daughter when she saw the big spoon she had to use. Very nice gesture. but the waitress only gave very little water for my daughter (not even half a cup) - a bit weird. Like the rice, not standard steam rice! Surely will go again.

Posted by WMint on Apr 4, 2013 in Eating out , Korean , Places to eat | 0 comments I was called out to dinner late at night for some Korean BBQ in Clayton, just a five minutes drive from home and knew I had to pretty my body to digest a larger than normal amount of meat. On a day to day basis, you’d probably be forgiven to believe that I’m vegetarian. But for the love of food and the sake of blogging I’m willing to try, taste and experience new flavours. Now I’ve had Korean BBQ at Clayton before but never have I dined at Kang Na Roo and my friend wanted to show me his favourite place for Korean food. Kang Na Roo is on the corner of Clayton Rd and a small side street almost next to the train station but on the opposite side. Still following me? It’s a cosy restaurant that’s large enough to accommodate a decent number of people without feeling too crowded. Since my friend was more familiar about this place than I was, I let him place the order. I was interested in trying their Bibimbap s

My suggestion is try everything except the dessert.

the owner i found was very kind and attentive to our three course meal option.

i eat authentic korean food in the city and this is the same real korean food.

pricing is difficult to discuss, the vast majority of korean eateries including this
restaurant maintain a higher price but that is due to the food and effort required to make the dish. as opposed to the simpler and inexpensive food found in other cuisines.

its well worth coming here on a rainy night, usually empty around 6pm but you get fast attentive service.

try them and skip dessert

Delicious!. I've been here countless times with my partner and we are always very happy with the service and food given. The lovely older lady who runs the place remembers our order every time and brings it to us extremely quickly!

I've eaten at many many korean restaurants and although I can't say what their other meals are like, I ADORE their beef bulgogi and kimchi, it is the best i've had anywhere. My boyfriend's mother won't eat chicken bulgogi anywhere but here.

Just finished my first meal here. Impressed with the authenticity of the food, it's not tuned to the taste of the Western palate like many other Korean restaurants I have tried. As it is with most restaurants, you have to know what to order. Try something different in this place like the raw crab and you will be surprise at how much you like it. Service was lovely and the portions are perfect. Loved the king prawn bokkum and the modum special BBQ plate. Look forward to going back and tryin other dishes.

Every time I have been here it was good food at a reasonable price with good service but last time was sensational at a late lunch with my wife. Not many customers seemed to = more care in food quality and the quality this time was great with attention to presentation and the owner takes great care in customer satisfaction. She really looks after you. Korean BBQ at this Korean restaurant is one of the better ones. A great place to gorge yourself on BBQ and booze.

Absolutely amazing! Food was fantastic! Cannot recommend more. It gets super busy though so I would recommend booking a table, and if there is a line out the door you do need to go in and tell them you are there for your booking. Otherwise you will be waiting in line for a table instead. Highly recommend the sweet and sour chicken, all the entrees and the spring onion pancake. The BBQ meat section of the menu can be cooked at table or in kitchen. Keep in mind these are all full meals. We ordered way to much thinking it was like other Korean BBQ places with small amounts of meat. 🤣 Even the entrees were large. Love love love

Super family friendly ❤️ Really liked the ambience and food was authentic. Is a bit pricey compared to other korean restaurants but its worth it. Beef bulgolgi was lit. Idk why ppl are complaining about the old lady, she was really nice to us? I’m not expecting 5 star service at a family run restaurant 😂. And who complains about 50c??? Everyone increased their prices after Covid?? If you have no money just say that.

Expected kangaroo to be on the menu, but they have a surprising story about the name that doesn't relate to the animal. Authentic food run by the Korean Halmeoni, set in a traditional style interior with imported Korean timber features and decor. Quite reasonable, bear in mind most of the dishes are enough for 2 people.
