Review Bean Around Bakery Cafe - Clifton Hill

Trader Joe
The young lady was super nice, so nothing against her. This was bar far the stalest croissant ive ever eaten. So dry and the ham was dry too. Two bites then to the bin!

They forgot my order. I went back in to remind them. They’d forgotten again. I went back in a few minutes and they had it this time. Got back to the car and the order was wrong. All this is forgivable. BUT the mask mandate was not being enforced at all. This place is hot and unventilated and there were lots of elderly people in there at this time. Very irresponsible. Coffee pretty good!

Perfect cafe that made my day, look at this delicious food. Overall I got to say very satisfied

Had roast beef melt wrap, which was a unique food I never had before, black forest cake and donut with cappuccino. All the foods looked fresh and tasted good and the coffee was of perfect texture. Loved the cozy space at the back with a little backyard.

Probably 3.5 stars - baked goods, pastry options and more on the menu, good coffee - lots of dining space out the back and on footpath. Friendly staff.

Excellent coffee with friendly staff and tables outside on footpath to enjoy Queens Parade Clifton Hill 👍

Great value cafe and eatery with a quiet seating space and outdoor area out the back for reading, working or meetings. Excellent value $11 lunch & coffee takeaway options during covid - my spanakopita & coffee were both terrific

Was in the area & walked past this delightful cafe & their cakes caught my eye. They have the best selection of flourless cakes ever! The flourless fig & walnut was sublime. Warm & friendly service. The coffee was good too. If in the area again, will definitely go there.

I went to Bean Around with my two kids today. I have never encountered a more rude, cold, "friendless" reception from a cafe than this one. This was all from the woman at the front register, (young, brunette with a terrible attitude) who had no smile, was extremely unpleasant, and made us feel that we were somehow inconveniencing her by placing our order. The guy there (of Indian or similar descent) was fantastic, and even gave me a free hot chocolate. But I just can't get over someone in a customer service position being so rude to someone who is giving them business! This was especially strange as there were no customers in the cafe, but now I know why.

Been here a couple of times. This place does the best pies and pasties, and bacon and egg rolls. Coffee is good too. Very friendly and helpful staff. Looking forward to trying other items on the menu.

This place is always cheerful and efficient. It’s no frills and not a hipster place. I think it’s heaps better than over-rated Cavallini next door. Excellent veggie pastie and the coffee is delicious and hot. I’m a local and go here frequently. Never been disappointed.

Lots of seating and a nice back room that was very warm on a wintery day. Hot chips were made with fresh oil, I could tell because they were light and fluffy and didn’t have dark/brown spots.

I purchased a voucher for the Bean Around Bakery Cafe. On attempting to book, I was dealt with by a staggeringly rude member of staff who told me that the dates I wanted to book for - all Sundays - were fully booked (although he said that they had plenty of availability if I was booking without a voucher). He told me that I could come any day midweek. As I work - as do most people - this wasn't acceptable.

Sadly, this is a common tactic amongst restaurants that accept vouchers: sell too many vouchers then try to palm off customers who want to use them at weekends with useless dates and times during the working week. In short, businesses that do this sell too many vouchers because they are greedy and then try to pass off the consequences of this into customers.

Note to management: you only get one chance to impress customers and you blew it. I'll never give this place my custom again.

This cafe used to be Degani I'm not sure that means much either way. Dropped in for a quick bite for lunch with a friend. We had beef burgundy pie and a ham and salad roll with 2 coffees. The staff were a bit abrupt but fairly efficient, the ham in the sandwich was so thin it
like they didn't really want you to have it. Pie and coffees were average. Nothing bad just underwhelming.

The food was good and the ambiance of the courtyard out at the back was very nice. The corridor leading up to the courtyard deserves special mention, it's like walking through a castle corridor. Service was quick and staff were friendly.
Scrumptious GG
This cafe was unique. Had to walk passed a hall to reach to the courtyard out at the back, which have a large and bright room.
Ordered chai latte, short macchiato, hot chocolate and cafe latte. The hot drinks were fairly decent.
For our lunch we had trio sliders, chicken parma, beef burger and salt&pepper clamari. Overall, it was pretty average, nothing extraordinary.
Service was quick and staff were friendly.

Great food and service. Very friendly staff. Plenty of seats next to the street, inside, and outside. My partner and I ordered big breakfast and veggie breakfast, both were big plates. Coffee was ok.

Thursday brunch for 5. Business was slow during our time there. The location was good with car parking in the side streets behind Queens Pde. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was basic and ok. The portions were good. Nothing about the food really stands out so it would be very hard for this place to compete with other cafes in the vicinity.

I really enjoyed having a vegetarian breakfast plate here years ago when it was still Degais. Fresh juice was great and service was good. I haven't been in seen the name has been changed and I'm assuming owners?

The people who run this cafe are very good. Always smiling and happy to see you. The coffee is not the greatest but it's not bad. Just average. They have a nice selection of bakery items. I feel that they rely too much on "store bought" products and as such It's just a bit too generic for the area. On the positive side though it's always clean and has good service.

O M G the name has been replaced but don't let that Deter you from the great value and quality of the fresh produce and wide variety of international foods from breakfast, brunch to lunch served in a newly renovated and extended courtyard located in the rear off the cafe. Customer service was good but could have been better overall highly recommend it and will not disappoint.

Is this place Degani or Bean Around Bakery and Cafe? In any case the variety is good, and whilst their service is friendly enough the food is very average. Amongst the nachos we ordered, was prt of the plastic cheese packaging!! That was an inedible bonus I didn't expect. On the plus side..the cheese was obviously fresh!?! Its all not bad, big thumbs up on the freshly squeezed juices which was marvellous.

It's a great venue ..... confusing name

What used to be Degani, now Bean Around Cafe.

Location, set up, parking, footpath, front, the backroom and courtyard .... must mentioned that long exposed brick wall corridor, just perfect brunch and even dinner venue in Clifton Hill.

But that's about it and their Sweet treats looks good too.

In terms of Brunch menu, disappointing, taste, portion, presentation and just the way it was cooked, nothing was attractive, see photos. Corn Fritter was served with Sweet Chili sauce, freshly made or bottle? Was it a fresh corn kernels?

Coffee and other drinks are also ordinary.

Service is close to non-existence, you have to order at the counter and it's a long walk to freedom ... order, if you are sitting at the back room and courtyard.

Had lunch on the weekend using the voucher. We all had the chicken burgers. Wasn't that great. The grill chicken breast were paper thin. Terrible. The chips came out under cooked and cold. The only thing was ok is the coffee and the girls are very friendly at the counter. Just because people used the vouchers it not right to served less than the normal standard. Don't think we will go back.

Waited at counter for minutes, without any sort of acknowledgement from any of the 3 staff behind the counter. They turned and served some people before me who literally had just walked in.

I ordered 2 breakfast meals, a coffee and english breakfast tea, which was repeated back to me. We sat down, they brought the drinks in takeaway cups... okay.

Then they only served one of the breakfast orders. This place is best avoided, horrible service, low quality food. Coffee was alright but I'd advise going else where. Plently of better looking places around here.

They also used white-out on their menus to increase the price of everything... didn't want to reprint a menu? No smiles at all, no goodbye or thanks for coming.

Hard bread for a Bakery. Shocking juice tasted like a cup of lemon. Not how it used to be, dropped its quality and raised its prices. Apart from the pretty display of sweet, shop needs a major refreshen up
Fatman FEED Me
Had been going here since 2006, not how it used to be seems to lost its love and passion, everything is best explained as average and plain! Not what we want from a funky hipster Clifton hill location, from pad knowledge degani started here and was amazing!, maybe to bigger expectations to Live up to

Shame baking has stopped onsite!

❤️ hopes its get revived

Average coffee, average food but friendly staff, Not a place to go for a second time! I had the big breakfast and not even one item was exciting in my plate.
Kimmy_desu
Food was a bit on the average side although service was pretty friendly/cheerful and the indoor courtyard area was comfortable and relaxing to sit in. I had the chilli corn fritters and it was a rather ordinary dish albeit nicely presented. The poached eggs were slightly overcooked as the yolk weren't runny and already became solid. Hubby's steak sandwich was also overcooked (fully done) but otherwise it was okay. The prices are quite reasonable here which is good, hopefully they can make slight improvements to the food to do better.

Ordered nachos, can't remember if they were $10 or $14 but either way, it was too expensive for what I received. A really hot bowl with luke warm unflavoured corn chips. A tiny sprinkle of cheese on top, burnt. Some of the chips were burnt too. Then three tiny little cups of old el paso salsa, sour cream and some semi squashed avocado with a little bit of garlic. The sauces were enough for about 4 chips. The whole thing was a disappointment. How can they serve burnt food?

Not happy. Had a brunch, the pamajama was far from fresh, the big breaky was cold not to mention the fact was that i ordered poached eggs and recieved a sunny side up.
The girls behind the counter were constantly confused and didn't seem like they were able to navigate through the POS System.
Really, I hate rating badly but today Degani (Clifton Hill) was a horrible experience and as a result they've lost a customer and wouldn't ever be recommend this place again

Festivus - ok at best. This was not a bad meal it was just a little salty and I felt I could do better at home
Serving size good and coffee ok

Good Food - No Complaints from me. Went to Dagani's about 6 months and thought the food was fresh and tasty and decided to give it another crack since its a good half way meeting point for my friend.

Honestly, I'm not too sure what some of these Urbanspoon people are complaining about on here. My vegetarian breakfast with a fancy bottled carrot juice was fresh and tasty and my girlfriend had the big breakfast with no complaints wither. Furthermore, the service was friendly.

Overall both meals were enjoyable and I have even booked another voucher to use in a few weeks time.

Poor Customer Service - this place will be lucky to last

Disinterested staff, boring food.. Three staff stood behind the counter chatting the whole time we were there.
Another waitress was trying to do her best but was finding it hard.
If you are not interested in running a cafe, choose a different profession.

Degani's queens parade, passive aggressive waitress, red hair .... Myself and my four year old daughter had a couple of coffees and toasties, which were fine over two visits - however, the waitress who took our order was unpleasant and rude - i noticed that she kept this attitude up,not just with us but also many other customers over both visits.
we all have off days, and working with the public can be demanding at times, but rudeness and aggressive behavior is totally unacceptable ...

Great service, Friendly staff,. We had the Big breakfast today and it was very nice, so was the coffee
The staff were also very friendly and polite. Great place
Monica
Went here with a $19 groupon voucher. We both had poached eggs with holandaise sauce & spinach on English muffins. We also had 2 coffees (which were included in the deal). I would have to say this is by far one of the worst cafés I've ever been to. I'm not a fussy eater, but the breakfast was disgusting. The ingredients used are poor quality. In addition, the poached eggs were way over cooked, the muffin was burnt and the holandaise sauce was disgusting and used straight out of a packet. Would never go there again.

Eggs florentine. Perfectly poached eggs, the rest was nothing to get very excited about.

-----15 Sep, 2014-----

Potato pancakes with salmon. Thought the pancakes would have more potato. Pleasant dish, but would have been inadequate without the extras purchased (bacon and avocado).

Good Food but Watch for the Waitress with Attitude.. Have always enjoyed the food here and largely friendly service. However had the displeasure of being served this morning by waitress with dyed silver ash hair who refused to take my order for a coffee after we finished the meal telling me I'd have to walk down to the counter to order it. We were the only customers on the whole back section and when I explained that the previous waitress had just taken my husbands coffee order without a problem but she still insisted I go to the counter as she would not put in my latte order- she did not apologise for the inconvenience and rather seemed to enjoy the power of saying no! Service is very important to me so not sure whether I'd be going out of my way to return when there are so many other similar places to choose from along this strip.
Punxmatt
Staff does not know the difference between a flat white or latte the service was so slow
Luke
I had a good takeaway Cupaccino here and the Tandoori chicken pie was also nice.
Stephen Roberts
Slow service. Ordered a red wine. Waitress brings no wine with meal. Long wait. Waitress brings a white wine, and then tried very hard to sell white wine to a red wine drinker - eventualy another diner buys it. So still no red wine. Ordered it again. Doesn't come. Had to go and fetch it myself, by which time I'd finished the meal.

Had bfast with partner monday morning. First time, bit quiet. Going on like %, must've gone on good day. Good coffee, service and great Bfast. Ill be back

Can't really tell. Not going to say I like it or not.
This place is getting hammered, and a from people with 1 or two reviews??.
My short experience, seemed ok for a little general cafe, small, and uncomfortable, but the coffee was good, the o j was in a bottle from mildura so ok, d good Aussie oranges, service, well, what you expect from a small cafe, coffee on table, thanks for your money, no frills no fuss, and too young and inexperienced.
I would go again, but it's only a small strip cafe, so who cares, coffee is good, so sit down and stop thinking you r a princess to be worshipped by the staff.

Good value Breakfast: friendly staff. I always "customise" my order ... And they always gladly do it. Always friendly. Try the balance breakfast or the vege breakfast. Good options and value when you feel like a cooked breakfast but don't want to over do it.
Cranky Veg
The service here is even worse than the food, and that's really saying something. Truly awful.
Kapuistella
Bought a voucher from livingsocial. $19 breakfast for two with drinks. The food was average but worths the price(I mean $19). And I don't think the staff are mean. Actually I found them quite helpful.
Lisa
Terrible!. Terrible stale food that tastes like it's 2 weeks old.

Used A voucher, Tried To stiff Me With Drinks, And food, Was average, Meals Tasted Ok but wouldn't Pay Full price. Would Walk Pass Any other time

I had a Steak sandwich and I must say everything in it was nice except the steak.
It was very chewy.
The hot chocolates are so so.
Sometimes really hot sometimes like warm.
LS
Disappointing. We used to go to deganis just for the bread and butter pudding muffins, sweet, delicious and moist. Never again. Got one from clifton hill yesterday, it was dry and not even sweet. So disappointing!
Lewei JIANG
Probably the worst living social deal so far. Half piece of the full serve salmon, over cooked and not fresh. Everything even the salad was with the wrong dressing! Not worth trying
High Expectation
Embarrassment to Queens Pde. Would not take my dog here.
Cabes_au
Totally agree with others about the service, particularly in the afternoon. I'm a local and have been here a lot but I've just had enough of the attitude of the staff here.
Nick
If you don't like retail - get out!. Went there with low expectations after previous experience many years ago was highly unsatisfactory. Cavallini next door was closed. Clearly a need for a new owner here. Retail rule 101 - don't piss your customers off, they have come to you to part with their money! Lazy service, uninterested staff, ordinary food. It can't be that hard and if it is, maybe you should be doing something else. As a local, I really wished ths could be so much better.
Alan
Terrible service, stood there waiting to order coffee for 5 min even though I was the only person in the place and there was Two workers behind counter not even a smile or hello just blank can't be bothered to serve u looks. I walked out and will never go back.
Gin
Try Cavallini instead. This place seems to feed on the overflow and leftovers from Cavallini, a few doors up. Cavallini closes at 4pm, and traffic at Degani picks up noticeably at that point. It's hard not be disappointed, it's like walking past a Ducati and jumping on a moped.
Loves To Eat Out.
Not happy with anything here, the food was heated by microwave, was slow to arrive and the service was poor, not for me.
Miss B
Dear Degani North Fitzroy - please send your staff to the 'Customers pay your wages, be nice to them!' workshop. I gave up going to this cafe as I couldn't cope with the rude "i cant be bothered with you attitude" staff, stale cakes and slices. Please please please if you open a cafe at least have staff that want to work and have some idea of customer service.
Happy Customer
Food Review. Just wanted to add a note to counter some of the other reviews. I love eating at Deganis, it is a very comfortable and relaxed place. The coffee is great and so are their meals. My favourite is the spanakopita. It is delicious!!! I often take my laptop and also get some work done. They have a great on street area and a comfortable eating area in the back. Oh and I love the fact that the give me the tea bag out side of the pot. That way I can make it the exact strength that I like :-)
Arual La Frangipanette
Uninspiring.

A disappointment breakfast. We bought two vouchers for Degani Bakery Cafe, thought it would be good breakkie. I ordered smoke salmon with scramble eggs, my husband got big breakfast. Only two slices salmon folded up on side of plate with scramble eggs & bread. It looked so boring, tasted a bit bland and dry. Asked for tomato sauce, waited a while, got two small packet sauce like from McDonald. Big breakfast was just OK. These are the worst breakfast among all the breakfast vouchers we have bought so far.
Michael Carey
I really object to buying a pot of tea and having it delivered to your table and you have to make it yourself. Firstly I object to using a tea bag, but then to have to put it into the pot myself then wait for it to brew. Surely this can be done by the person making the tea. I can't remember what I paid now, but it was in something like $3.50 or $4 (i know this is not a lot) but this is outrageous for the pot of boiling water and a tea bag that I had to make myself. And the "2 cup" teapot wasn't full so only got a cup and a half... Never going back.... I wonder if all Degani franchises are like this or its just the one in Clifton Hill.
