Review San Marco Restaurant - Coburg

Estelle Laufeia
I ordered San Marco’s Margherita pizza for pick up tonight & considering I am not a fan of aussie style pizzas it surprised me that I liked it! The dough was beautiful, crispy but very soft. The sauce was lovely although I do think they overdid the cheese a bit. I’d definitely recommend going in to eat or takeaway. It wasn’t a long wait (5 - 10 minutes) even on Saturday night with a busy restaurant!

My family and I dined here on Friday it’s was rocking , the service was fantastic, the Blonde girl and the pizza boy friendly and attentive. we felt welcome and even took the time to explain the menu. We shared some beautiful divine pizzas and for main course we had Chicken parmigiana ,risotto balls and two risottos Absolutely amazing, will be back again soon 10/10 family was happy

We had an amazing experience at this new restaurant, what a great find! The pasta was amazing and the pizza’s were delicious. The service was also spot on - highly recommend, will be coming back!

No way these reviews are about the restaurant in moonee ponds. It hasn't been around for years. It only opened up a couple of months ago. Obviously the reviews are about another location...and it's clearly a deliberate misrepresentation of the truth. Have been wanting to try this new place in the area and support the local precinct. Have tried calling to make reservations on several occasions and at different times of the day and night but no one answers the phone, ever. The mailbox is full and not accepting messages. Email reservation requests are not answered. We can't just turn up and hope for the best, there's 7 of us. If they're that good there should be better management of their business.

Inexperienced staff. Forgot about us multiple times when we asked for things. What kind of Italian restaurant takes 20 minutes to serve bread? The Carbonara was like eating pure salt. One waitress didn’t even know what ginger beer was. Like seriously?

Rip off! One star is too much! Ask for an Affogato & got changed more than a cocktail… They must grown their own vanilla beans & milk their own cows in the back. They didn’t even have the courtesy to disclose the price upfront as it wasn’t on the menu. Not even the most expensive restaurant in Melbourne charge $21.00 for an Affogato. I see who they had hardly anyone in the restaurant.

It would have to be the worst Puzza Restaurant in Melbourne. The menu is about 50 years old . Why would an Italian Restaurant have a Moroccan Chicken dish? The mains were so boring I thought the safest bet was Pizza. Was I wrong !!! Every pizza we ordered was disgusting. Soggy in the middle and the texture of cake on the edges . I could not eat more than half . The service was equally bad . Firstly they served Prosecco in a wine glass . When they came they just plonked every glass in front of my partner . They gave us side dishes for no reason and after we finished we sat there for over half an hour waiting for the Wait staff to clear . Three of them passed by our table about 6 times not once did they ask us if wanted another drink or attempt to clear our table . As soon I saw the menu I said to my friend “I’ll give this place 3 months “ after that rubbish I’ll give 1 more month .DO NOT GO THERE they do not deserve your money .

We celebrated a special birthday lunch at San Marco. The food was excellent. The antipasto platter and focaccia were delicious as were the pasta dishes and main meals. The waiters were super friendly and prompt to respond to any of our needs. The only negative was that there was a long wait between the antipasto and the entree.

Absolutely amazing! We took my mother and grandmother for Mother's Day and it was amazing as it always is!!! The food to die, the staff so professional and kind. I would highly recommend this place to anyone! Thanks again San Marco you've done it yet again! 😍😍👌👌😊😊

We had a family get together tonight at San Marco. There were 11 of us and so it was a busy time for our waitress. She was patient and helpful with suggestions. Food was amazing. Customer service was excellent. Friendly staff. Our thanks for making it a wonderful night. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

We have been here a couple of times and love the food. Service is great and the atmosphere is relaxing. An old church converted into a restaurant-it’s a lovely place to enjoy good food with family & or friends

My partner and I had dinner here for the first time last night. I was very impressed, the food was so delicious and the service was great. <br/><br/>We shared a pizza to start, woodfired and thin base! Was so yummy. <br/>Then I had the fish of the day, which was Barramundi with a lemon and dill sauce, fish tasted very fresh and was cooked perfectly, my partner had the home made gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese sauce. We were both stuffed but made room for the home made crepes and were so happy we did! they were amazing!!!! Perfect way to end the meal.<br/><br/>Service was attentive even though they were fully booked out. <br/><br/>Great work guys, thanks for keeping the local food scene alive!!

I went here recently with some friends, loved the vibes of this place. Very homey, felt like you were at the countryside! Could’ve stayed there and chatted all night! The food was really yummy too! Would be awesome on a Saturday night too as they have live music 😍

One of our favourite places to go eat traditional Italian foods for over 20 years from the wood fire pizza to the traditional Italian pasta or what ever other dishes you love you will find here. The best chef in the kitchen will so her best to leave you coming back for more time and time again... the friendly staff will look after you and make you feel welcome like you should feel when going to eat out. This place is also great for all your special functions as I have had my birthdays here and various events so come down check it out.. only 15 minutes from the city just next door to Pentridge Prison with plenty off parking.<br/>I highly recommend this place for somewhere nice, quiet and great food!<br/>Enjoy.....

It's been a very long time since I was last here so i thought it would be nice to revisit the bluestone restaurant. The moment we all walked in the atmosphere and aromas greeted us with the sort of optimism you would have on a first date. The place was two thirds empty but it was a Wednesday lunch after all. Our orders were placed around 1.15 but the entree which was a shared pizza didn't arrive until 1.40. 25 minutes was way too long. The mains didn't arrive until 2.20pm. So let me give the nice people a bit of advice. If you want to get the business crowds in, then try to remember that we don't have all afternoon to have lunch. If you want to cater to people who do have all day... then that's fine too but don't expect us back in a hurry. Btw.. the food was nice but nothing too extraordinary.

Great experience for a Saturday night. Our table shared pizzas which were cooked to perfection - traditional bases and toppings were full of flavor. Love the live music too! Will definitely be back

Ordered the 11' Margharita Pizza via Uber eats tonight. Was very eager to try San Marco pizza and had been informed the pizza chef was from Italy.I am one who will only eat pizza if Italian's prepare it.Unfortunatly I was very dissapointed with the quality and size of the pizza I was served.<br/><br/>To begin with the pizza was almost cold on delivery and had to be reheated in the microwave. Not a great start as I could have managed the same if purchasing Woolworths pizza.NOTE if you are reading this review Woolworths sell a pizza of comparable in quality for $7.And im not even joking.Anyway this pizza was all tomato base sauce and very little cheese.Yes you guessed it out went the flavor also.<br/><br/>So to sum up I would give this effort a 3/10.

Catching up with friends and this was a last minute selection. Loved the food and the serve. The waitress asked what we liked and knew exactly what was in each meal and made good recommendations on what we should try. Yes, the time between ordering and the arrival of the meals was a little long but that is to be expected when everything is cooked fresh. Ordered the herb bread to start with a shared calamari dish. The calamari were crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside and beautifully lightly fried. Followed it with the fish stew which was more that satisfying  after soaking up all the sauce with the accompanying herb bread. The decor is simple and not over the top. Obviously the money has been spend on the quality of the food. A hidden secret in Coburg. Will definitely be going back.
The Girl With Blue Hair
Came here as we were visiting some friends in the area. We had a Pascatore pizza to share as an entree. Then we each had a main - Saltimbocca, Pollo Parmagiana, Garlic Prawns and Carbonara. The pizza was amazing (five thumbs up!). The prawns were fresh and the crust wasn't chewy. I had the Pollo Parmagiana. It was moist and the tomato sauce was perfect to taste. I have to agree with the other reviews that the food was very slow. We waited for almost 40 minutes after entree to get our mains. It wasnt too bad as we were catching up with our friends. I must compliment that the lady looking after our table was attentive and efficient.

One of the worst meals and service I have had for a long time. We went with a couple of friends and we ordered the charcuterie platter. What a rip off! 4 cherry bocconcini, 3 shaved prosciutto, some cheap leg ham and some equally cheap feta, 4 olives. The waiter just left it in the table and we thought it was odd just to serve it like that without crackers or bread. After we started eating and nearly finished (at least 10/15 min later) he comes back and plonks a piece of focaccia on the table. The focaccia could not be cut with a knife. It had nice rosemary/sea salt flavour but that's it. It was crunchy and not risen properly. Myself and my friend ordered the special which was barramundi with scalloped potatoes and Greek salad. What came out was not even close. Definitely not barramundi, not sure what fish it was but it was a thick slab of unflavored, unseasoned and overlooked fish with one BARELY ROASTED and still hard potato cut in 4 and a side salad of gourmet lettuce, couple of tomato pieces, and some cheap feta, swimming in a very tart vinegarette. Hardly a Greek salad. Greek salad does not contain lettuce! When I told the waitress that our barramundi was supposed to<br/>Come with " creamy scalloped potatoes" as the menu stated and was a deciding factor in our choice of meal, she just shrugged her shoulders and stated "they aren't making them tonight". Well, you could of informed us when we ordered or taken the special off!!! It was not a cheap meal for some over cooked fish and undercooked potatoes and soggy badly done Greek salad. Save your money and go elsewhere. There are a couple of reputable Italian woodfired places in pascoe vale and Preston. Keep driving.

One of Melbourne's best Italian restaurants. I eat out alot and San Marco Italian Restaurant is definitely one to put on your list of places to go! Home style Italian cooking, beautiful pizza's and pasta's, all quality ingredients and made with love. I celebrated my birthday here last week, i had a fantastic night, the service was friendly and the venue catered for my large group. Everyone loved it, the food was delish, i will definitely be returning here!

Came here on Saturday nights & was surprised by how warm and busy it was. Service was excellent - very confident & the right level of assertiveness. We tried their Napoli bread, calamari, pizza, pasta & veal & all was excellent. Wine also great & reasonably priced. Candles and guitar player/singer a lovely touch:

Saturday night with a relaxing atmosphere, great guitarist to add to it. Service was perfect - Audrey was particularly amazing. The food was of the best quality, penne bolognese was full of flavour, the parmigianas were generous servings and the chicken fresh and thick.<br/>Recommended!

Never again.. Service was extremely poor and slow, food below average.  The bill  was overcharged and our  drinks  come after  we got served our meals., that was because we had to ask for it. I left all my meal on the plate and asked if i could have it put in a t/away container and was refused. ( I have couple of cats)  . Strange because they do cater for T/Away..   I just payed the all bill including the overcharge and left with out complaining. Disappointing.

Brilliant. Have been there several times and food has always been great. One of the few Italian places I'll go out for. Had a lovely seafood platter but looking at everyone else's pasta dishes made me decide what I'll have next time.

Slow service, not enough staff honestly. But it is sweet to see how they helped with another table's birthday though:) gnocchi tastes smooth and sort of like melted in ur mouth, but the creamy sauce tasted a bit sour and weird. Personally, I like the chewy flavor so..... Anyway, I guess all credit should go the nice guitar player, really nice melody:)
Corey Busuttil
Food and setting is very nice. The meal sizes were generous and the steak was well cooking. They are very much lacking in the service department. Although they are friendly, you are often left unattended to due to there only being 3 waiters for a function of just over 100. Drinks took 3-4 requests and 20-25 minutes to arrive.

I was there the 8th april 2016 (6 of us ) ordered two 1/2 glasses of red $8 each, 1 seafood pizza $18.80, the bread base tasted like sugar , others found that their pizzas had to much cheese, one small Peroni Nastro azzurro $8...<br/><br/>Won't go there again.

San marco makes great traditional food. staff is awesome and the ambience is wonderful.<br/><br/>i had the gnocchi, which were fresh and fluffy and just so delicioius. not too expensive either! a true gem down that end of coburg.

Lovely ambience with fascinating history. Love that there's somewhere great and local to eat in a "I'm not cooking night" ☺. Friendly staff who more than helpful. Cold night but lovely inside with wood fire. Meals were reasonably priced, fresh, loved the home cooked vibe, and caters to all ages and groups.

Delicious pasta. We had the most delish pasta last night. It was by far one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had. Thank you for a great night!

Fabulous ambience with beautiful fresh food. Went for work Christmas dinner and had wonderful time. Food and restaurant ambience wonderful. Definitely going again. Just wish they'd have more comfortable chairs :)

Tasty food, good atmosphere, beautiful building. Went here with a friend on a weeknight, and had a lovely time. Don't know why we hadn't thought of coming sooner. The staff were attentive without being over the top, and while there were a few other tables in use nearby the high ceiling and spacious layout kept it fairly quiet and enabled good conversation. Having read some of the reviews we wondered if we should stick to pasta or pizza but we opted for some of the mains and were so glad we did. Perhaps on the pricey side, but very high quality and nicely done meals which left us both more than satisfied. I am looking forward to going back soon!

Great local establishment. What you will find here is good, honest food without the bells and whistles - if you are looking for the equivalent to a basic pizza/pasta bar (ie La Porchetta) then this might be up your alley. Not many of these type of eateries around the Coburg area, so nice to have this on offer. Just don't expect silver service. Ciao for now !

Lovely food, terrible service. Just felt I needed to vent after I was left very disappointed having booked this place for a function. Was told the antipasto platters were big, they weren't. Was told the vegetable platters would be replenished when empty, they weren't. When I queried why my cupcakes weren't on display on the cake stand, was told that I was to do it! As two of my guests are lactose intolerant, I told the manager to organise two mains without the cream sauce .... this wasn't done. They had to wait 20 minutes for their meal to come out again. I was not impressed! Thank goodness my anaphylactic guest had no problems!<br/>Honestly, if you are wanting an amazing meal, this is the place, but the staff are way too inexperienced and too busy clearing half empty glasses and half empty plates. Thank you San Marco. I had a lovely time with my family and friends, but I wouldn't book this place for a function again.

We will be back. We turned up on Saturday night without a booking . Full house except for 2 tables for 2,only 2 of us so we were lucky.Prompt service, fantastic food and service. After reading some of the other reviews I don't know if we are easy to please or some people are never happy, maybe we struck a good night. Try it and decide for yourself.

Mdasmi. Lovely restaurant, well set up. We all really enjoyed the food and the staff were lovely. We did have the same issue as some other reviewers where the staff would keep checking if we were done, I took this as being courteous. Food was great, definitely would go back.

Potential but fell short. The location and layout/decor of the restaurant is good - you have plenty of space and not sat on top of other diners.<br/><br/>I ordered a steak - to be cooked medium rare- with salad - which arrived well done with no salad! the steak was very expensive for the cut & size so was disappointed to find it had been well over cooked.<br/><br/>before two of us had finished our meals they started to clear our plates and then hovered until the remaining two had finished to take plates away.<br/><br/>lastly they overcharged us on the bill.<br/><br/>could be a nice restaurant - pity service fell short.

Well we finally got our meals, mine was nice, partners was very average:(((((( what ever you do, do not sit near the door, that is where all the kids hang out, very noisy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<br/><br/><br/>-----12 Oct, 2013-----<br/><br/>We have been here for over an hour and still have not got our meals!!!!!!!!
Sean
We were all shocked that this happened- On saturday night the 1st June 2013- we ordered and our meals ended up in front of other people on the table beside us, this mix up was NOT brought to our attention (but we were aware what happened) then our meals were taken out the back and then Re- presented in front of us. Here is a tip- in future just be honest and say there has been a mix up and give us the opportunity to accept or refuse the meal.

Nice environment. Usually go here with colleagues. It is a nice place and the food is nice but not a perfect service. We order steak with chips they bring us steak with salad, ...<br/>I have multiple similar stories. But it worth to try.

Tradtional. Its traditional italian, its not fancy pants or elegant - its real traditional food.<br/>The staff do seem very young and inexperienced, but they are very friendly. The service was decent, the food was delicious. <br/>Have to say we selected traditional food - which is probably why we found it so good. Stick to the things they do well! We had Gnocci Carbonara & Fetticinni Bolognese. I rate it. We will go back, not for atmosphere or service - but for REAL italian food.

This is the first review I have ever written but felt the need to after seeing all the bad press this place seems to be getting. After driving past this place everyday my partner and I eventually decided to dine here when the restaurant we had planned to visit was closed. So glad that we did, the place was amazing. As a family business the service was warm and friendly and the place looks wonderful both inside and out. We went on a quiet/average night so our meals came quickly. My partner really enjoyed his pizza and I fell in love with the Tuscan risotto, so much the I regularly order it for take away (which they also offer). Ever since I have highly recommended San Marco to everyone who will listen and sincerely hope the bad reviews don't turn anyone off eating there.
Olivia
Slow service, too expensive!!! 2 of us got sick after our meals that tasted disgusting. Never again
Jamie Atkin
Nice looking but slow service and still waiting for mains after an hour! We have finished our bottle of wine already! Don't recommend!
Craigieburn1126
Never again. Inexperienced staff who had no idea what they were serving that night. Only three choices on the desert menu despite being a lot more on the online menu. Quite night yet we had to call staff over each time we wanted a drink. Average pizza(I could have got better at the local pizza place for $10 less) Overall 3/10 won't be back.

Manuel. Went to san marco for a work function, never again

Casual friendly service. Had the duck tortellini special and antipasto was very filling and flavoursome. Nice quiet atmosphere for weeknight dinner.

Dissapointed. I recently went to San Marco for the first time and was really let down by the lack of professionalism, we weren't served on time although the restaurant was empty and the waitress looked like she was doing us a favor . After a long wait the food was served Luke warm and it was by far the worst marinara I have ever had . I love the restaurants in the area and was disappointed with San Marco letting the coburg area down .might give it another go hope it's better next time fingers crossed .
Jenjen
Thumbs Up!. I thought that the meals were very expensive for what they were, although the veal is probably the best veal i've eaten. The venue is lovely and the atmosphere was good. The service could have been better. We had to ask for the desert menu and ended up walking to the counter to pay the bill even though the place was practically empty.

1st time reviewer. I have never felt the need to write a resuaurant review before and would like to share my experience at San Marco restaurant in Coburg with others.<br/><br/>I recently visited San Marco for the first time with my wife and 3 children we don't eat out much as a family and eating out is always a special occasion for us. San Marco did not dissapoint. The waitress who served us was very paitent waiting for our children to order and attentive to our needs for the whole evening. We were made to feel very welcome which is not always the case when you have your children in tow! <br/><br/>The serving sizes were generous and the food was superb, absolutely faultless! My steak was of high quality and cooked to perfection. My wife and eldest daughter both had risotto which they rated highly and my son thought his calamari was great. My yongest daughter had a kids meal which was a very generous size.<br/><br/>We will definitely return and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant to others.

This looks good inside but the food is stodgy, presented with no flair and the service last night was slow and unprofessional. The menu is Italianish but could do with a good kick towards honest real Italian or modern Aussie. Either way the quality needs a lift.
FattiesInMelbourne
Was hoping this would be a winner since it's close to home, but there was 7 calamari rings and a small handful of prawns on themarinara pizza, far too much gorgonzola on the four cheese pizza, and the herb bread was dry with limited flavour. All served cold too. Pasta might be a better option next time.
