Review My First Cafe & Thai Restaurant - Coburg

Mark R
Stand out Asian cuisine in an area dominated by European and Middle-Eastern cafés. The curry laksa was on par with city restaurants, and the coffee was as good as any local favorite. They seem.to be slightly under staffed, however the wait for food was still fairly quick.

Nice Thai Cafe and Staff. Coffee and Food is good with reasonable price. Some lunch special and new menu you can choose.

Great menu especially for lunch - you definitely can not beat the value and staff are approachable and welcoming. I recommend the Chicken Satay Lunch deal for $9!!

Lunch deal was quite good. Nothing exceptional about the food, but nothing bad about them too. I liked the curry puffs, the pastry was crumbly and crunchy and tasty. The fillings were delicious too. My duck was a little bit dry but the flavour was really good. I liked the whole vibe of the cafe.

All around great easy restaurant/cafe with Thai flavor and great setting and friendly staff. I always order wonton soup, nicest one I've had with very clean broth and topped with fresh coriander. I'll give the coffee 4 out of 5 and there's a choice of 15 different selections most at 3 dollars or under, bumping it up to 4.5 out of 5. Update: They appear to have new management I don't recognize any of the staff members and the coffee and food is not as good as it was.

The food here is all reasonably priced and good. I'm always a bit dubious about restaurants that try to do too many cuisines; but the Thai and Eurpoean food here is all good quality. Service is solid, and the food comes pretty quick. Can't really fault them, and I wish them luck.

The food is tasty...when it arrives - what was once a delicious treat is now becoming more and more frustrating when orders are now showing up incomplete more often than not. Trying to get the mistake sorted is like managing a circus. You call - the phone gets passed between 2-3 people, lots of apologies, but nothing being done to fix the situation - If you want the food you paid for - you'll have to wait another hour...if their driver is available... if you want a refund... you have to go to the store and speak to the manager.

Surprising little place. It's a good, cheap Thai restaurant with $10 basic dishes, with a standard Aussie cafe wrapped around it. I missed out on going to this excellent Thai restaurant for years because I assumed it was just another boring cafe. Excellent, good value Thai restaurant disguised as a basic cafe.

Very disappointing. Paid $15 for a bland, uninspiring fried rice. Asked for no egg but pineapple instead. Charged $3 extra. The rice had absolutely no Thai flavour to it and massive chunks of uncooked white onion. Barely edible. This place doesn't have a clear identity-unsure whether it's a standard cafe or thai restaurant and it really shows in it's food. So many tastier, cheaper options in Coburg. We would never go back.

Had dinner with a friend last 19/01/2019 at around 2030H. My friend found a chunk of plastic pieces from their crumbed calamari rings. staff immediately asked for apology and informed us that that they’re crumbed calamari is outsourced from other supplier. So disappointed and scared for the risks it may have cause.

Our local thai place! Cheap and cheerful with an awesome range and lunch specials! Lovely staff too! Usually we get red curry fried rice, laksa or pad thai.

I've been ordering here since they opened. Unfortunately not anymore. There's been a swift and drastic drop in quality. They're using powdered coconut milk instead of coconut cream for the curries now. They're watery and bland as a result. In my beef salad I got 3 pieces of budget minute steak (definitely not eye fillet as the menu states). The curry puffs had absorbed a bunch of oil and weren't cooked properly so it was like an oily sponge. And every single time I've ordered the Papaya Salad, there have been no dried prawns in it.

Lovely little cafe! Coffee is good and both food and drinks are surprisingly cheap. Ordered a cheese melt the other day for $10 and it was huge! I come here often to study as the atmosphere is quiet and isn't often too busy. Staff are wonderful and lovely. Deals with my gluten free needs well too.

Flavours are a bit weird, doesnt really taste like thai food ( have been to thailand many times ), soups are overly sweet without any balancing tartness, salt or lime. The rice is pretty flat without balance and the rice noodles just taste of oyster sauce.

Charging customers a credit card surcharge when I used a savings card and didn't notify me. If he had said something I might have used cash.

Would never recommend or order again. We got the Massaman Curry and Pad Thai online thinking we’d probably be able to get something similar to the ones we’d get at a normal Thai restaurant. The Pad Thai came with literally no vegetables except for the few pieces of capsicum (my boyfriend ate it anyway because we were hungry and didn’t want to make it a big deal as it was raining outside and felt bad for the people who had to deliver). The Massaman Curry, however, left such an impression of the restaurant that is rated 3-4 stars out of 5 that we’d have to check the actual place ourselves again next time before ordering online. The curry came in a takeaway container and the portion was massive. We were surprised that there were no signs of vegetables or anything besides the curry itself. What we found instead was 2-3 big uncut pieces of chicken (in the pics are the pieces already cut in halves or even thirds) and a blob of mashed potatoes. They put in zero effort at all. Waste of money and time.

Not sure if this is a cafe or a Asian restaurant, the focus needs to be on one of them not both as it doesn’t work effectively. The coffee is quite good here so maybe stick to the cafe side of the business

Amazing Thai food which come in huge serving at an unbelievable cheap price!
This is my go to take away always!

👌🏼green chicken curry/ vegetable tofu

👌 chicken pad Thai

👌🏿 salt and pepper and satay tofu are my favourite
I love the Thai stir fries here. Serving size is massive. They also do really good coffees and the best soy lattes I've ever had. Very friendly staff too.

I was better off with cheese n vegemite toast
Absolute joke. Need to improve and produce some real Thai food. I was horrified to find mashed potatoes in my gangmasamun.

A restaurant with friendly customer service and nice traditional Thai food in the heart of Coburg, this is my regular go-to.
I particularly enjoy the Tom Yum soup here although I'd prefer the lemongrass pieces to be bigger so they are easier to remove.

We ordered dinner through Menulog tonight and it was very disappointing. The beef curry had gigantic chunks of extremely tough beef in it. Not even remotely tender, and obviously low quality. The pad Thai was pretty good, but the curry soured our experience. With so many other options in the area, we'll look elsewhere next time.

Great variety and great food. Perfect place to have a delicious Asian meal. The service was very average. But the food makes up for it. Dim sims and the soup were delicious. Will definitely go back.

I've been dropping into this cafe for takeaway coffee semi regularly for a while now and the coffee is very good! Don't expect latte art but the perfect temperature and a great flavour - not overly bitter like some blends.
The staff have always been very friendly and accommodating and I finally tried the food the other night. I had the eggplant and chilli basil stirfry with vegetables and tofu and it was very tasty. Generous portion with the right amount of spice and quite cheap too. Plus they allow BYO so it's great for cheap eats out.
The atmosphere is nothing special. Being cafe style it leaves something wanting in the evening that doesn't encourage you to stay - more of a quick eats out. I would definitely go again and try some other things on the menu but will probably opt for takeaway next time.

A local simple cafe, with amazing prices on decent quality food and coffee :) This is a great place to go for a speedy lunch on a busy day or a lazy Sunday :)

not very happy. food was very ordinary. the spring rolls were full of pastry and little else. The Thai cakes were stodgy and did not finish them. The Pad Thai was awful (they should try Green Fields Pad Thai in Brunswick). the only thing quite nice on the menu was the Massman Curry but thought it strange that they served it with mash potato. If they do not improve this will be there first and last cafe. We had the home delivery at $45.00. Very disappointing.

If you want great cheap food this is the place! They have great lunch specials as well! We had the chilli noodles and the chilli jam/cashew chicken. The peanut sauce is delicious! The coffees were some of the best we've had in the area.

Beautiful food with a great selection to choose from. Brough the office here for the first time and there were no complaints. Everyone enjoyed their food. Service was great and staff were excellent. Definitely coming back!!

I have never been into the restaurant itself but My First Cafe has been our regular go-to Menulog meal since it opened. Fresh, flavoursome dishes that aren't overly sweet like you get in so many westernized Thai joints. My favourite at the moment is the green papaya salad with bbq chicken. Yum.

I'm not sure what this place is? Is it a cafe? Is it a Thai restaurant or a take away joint? The service is quite good. Friendly staff and welcoming smiles go a long way with me. The coffee though is just plain bad. The food is very hit and miss too. I can see what attracts people to this place, uber eats and very affordable but it's not for me. I'm all for trying something new and giving something a go but the recipe is all wrong here and just isn't improving. Not that it matters really to anyone, but I won't ever be back.

Beautiful food and so cheap too! I had a huge massamun curry and a latte for $12
Cute little cafe with big potential, well done guys and I'll see you soon

This place is my local, best coffee in Coburg! Food is amazing too, i usually get the salt and pepper squid and pad thai. Pad thai is definitely my favourite dish here, and if you're eating in for lunch they have specials between 11-4pm. Great service, great staff and great food!

I love this place!

I work just down the road and I am a regular customer for food and coffee!

The staff are so friendly and welcoming. I once placed a delivery order via Ubereats (couldn't leave the office hence the delivery haha) and they accidentally added something I requested to be removed, I called them and one of their lovely staff hand delivered the replacement within 10 minutes.
Despite that one-off hiccup, everything is great! Especially the coffee, my absolute favourite in the area.

Delicious food! This is the best Thai food I have had in a really long time. The staff is very friendly and the food is full of flavour! They have a great variety of food on the menu that can cater to anyone.

Have been a regular for the past 6 months and have only been disappointed once, a rather@ heavy omlette dish. Love the seafood "dunky" spaghetti and sarayed chicken skewers. Curries also great. Terrific value and the staff are pretty friendly.
Kimberley Ames
Delicious food and lovely service. Highly recommend. Only thing that prevented a 5/5 rating from me was my mixed berry smoothie had honey in it, but was not stipulated on the menu.

:) I'd come back!

Love ordering from here! Quick service and fantastic food. Never been disappointed! Ordered the Spaghetti Bolognese the other night for a laugh and it was actually amazing :)

Tried this restaurant for the first time, seemed quite busy so take away took a little time but very well worth it, must book a table next time, the food was really nice, can't beat a good Thai curry...

Welcoming, super quick service and fresh tasty food. We walked in an hour before close and they were more than happy to serve us. The food was great and fresh, if you are after greàt Thai food check this hidden gem out 😊

Have ordered delivery from here a few times. Good thing is they don't use msg. The Thai menu is good. Nothing special. Not overly traditional or authentic. It's fresh, it's delivered on time.
Sylvia's POV
Great local Thai-western fusion cafe. Reasonable daily lunch deals and convenient home delivery options.
Dined in today for lunch; had a tom yum soup and spicy basil stir-fry today. Tom yum lacked flavour, stir-fry was decent. Friendly staff and perfect corner location.
Micky
Ordered take-away from here last weekend. Massaman Curry includes hardly any meat. The black bean sauce (chicken in black bean sauce with veggies) tastes more like a generic honey/soy marinade. Steam rice serves were too gluggy. Wont be back here again.

Upon entering, cool little cafe! Staff friendly and not pushy. I saw Parma special with chunky chips and salad for $15, I was sold but will admit had low expectations for it as it seemed like very Asian style menu. We all know the rules you don't go to steak house and order chicken/seafood you get steak but did it anyway!! Thank god I did, what a ripper- delicious!!! Big chicken thick breast and perfect toppings, chips wonderful and even salad tasty... Well done will be returning for sure when I'm in area!!!

This place was so cute! Very friendly staff.
The satay sauce was very tasty!!!
Next time the family can't decide on what takeaway we want we will order here as they have a great range of food.
Gluttonous Gabi
Got take-away from here from the first time and I was really really pleased with the quality! Satay stir-fry was super generous with a variety of veggies & tofu, as well as heaps of thick satay sauce. Curry puffs could have had a bit more seasoning/spice, but were still delicious. Great staff toon! Best Thai take-away I've had in forever!

Really laid back cafe atmosphere. Good to just pop in and relax.Phenomenal chicken Pad Thai, decent coffee and reasonably priced. Staff very friendly.
Joanne Low
Pretty good food here and coffee as well.but I rather eat there as their home delivery food isn't that great. Home delivery food lacked flavor. Otherwise cute little cafe with good service
Iskybibble
Nice quaint and clean, food nice and cheap too. Friendly and welcoming staff which is nice change from some other ti cool gor school cafes in the area. We had the breakfast but the other fare looks inviting warranting a return visit

Great service on stepping in. Ambience was pretty good. The standard of the thai dishes are suspect however. Tom yum beef noodle soup at mild spicy level was not spicy at all. Amount of beef was not much. And the soup stock tasted factory-made i.e. not made fresh on the premises. This was confirmed by a staff member later. Chicken massaman curry was supposed to be mildly spicy - again not spicy at all. Amount of chicken could be a little more generous. The dish was lacking greens too.

We were really hungry and ordered Jungle Curry, Salmon Sailing, pumpkin stir fry and egg fried rice for two people. Spent $62.50 and loved all the dishes. They're not stingy with the food portion; we ended up packing leftovers home. This is now one of our staple restaurants for meals.

The staff here are so lovely and go out of there way to make you feel welcome. The food is good, a combination between Thai and western. The prices are excellent!

The best Thailand restaurant in Melbourne! Very clean, very friendly. Of course, the great food! I heard the chef there worked at a five star hotel.

100% sure I will back again! Thanks a lot My first cafe.

We stopped by this new little place and had some lemon merengue. The cafe is quite modern with pleasant decor and a warm vibe. The dessert was sweetly presented and tasty. I would come back.

I'm not sure why I wasn't expecting much from this place but I was proven so so wrong. I thought the food was gonna be 'what you pay for' cos it's so cheap, but you definitely get above and beyond the cost price. Food was delicious, as was the coffee. Staff were lovely and not too in your face. Will defs be coming back. Keep up the fab work.
Nemesia Shafaati
I have only had takeaway but I would happily dine in too. Yum food and reasonably priced, especially for veg which should always be a touch cheaper in my opinion. Quick service too and always with a big smile. I have had better thai but not in the Coburg area and not with a reasonable price tag so I keep going back for a reliable option.

Great food!! Cheap lunch prices for good size portions!! First time here but will not be my last!! Massaman beef curry 👌🏾👌🏾
Thank you to the friendly staff

What a great find ! It's a great place for catch up with my friends. It's such a newest cafe. Start my day with the best iced chocolate and nice smile from staff. Pad Thai is very very yummy, Will return back.

Delicious Thai food. Good coffee at any hour. Newspapers to read. Banana, mango and berry smoothies. Friendly and helpful hosts. What more could one ask for!

Sunny morning, feeling peckish? Go to My First Cafe. This Thai/Cafe fusion seems to nail it everytime. Had the Thai steak style sandwich alongside crispy chips and an Iced Mocha milkshake. The steak was tender and juicy which was a delight to eat. Highly recommend this cafe even just for a coffee. Will definitely be coming back.
