Review Big Belly Asian Cafe / Restaurant - Coburg

Lizzie Murrell
Possibly the worst food I’ve ever had in Melbourne. Everything was flavourless. The roti was tough, cold and felt days old. The ‘pan friend dumplings’ were old, either deep friend or oven baked and possibly packet or highly processed. Curries and noodles were watery, flavourless, soggy and not fresh. Honestly avoid.

I bought an all-you-can-eat dumplings voucher on Scoopon without reading the recent reviews on here. Big mistake! Without being able to request for a refund, I decided to risk it and just come and try the place out. Unfortunately the entire dining experience was absolutely atrocious, and reminded me of Kitchen Nightmares. I had to give one extra star because they seriously tried to be nice and generous, but the standard of their food and general hygiene leaves a lot more to be desired. I am grateful for their effort and service, but whoever cooked or made the food, please stop. You guys need to hire someone who actually knows how to cook. First of all, if you do want to attempt any of their dumplings, I suggest only getting the chicken or pork. All the other ones did not taste fresh. Do not get the chilli flavour either, as it’s super salty and smothered in sauce. I think either steamed or the soup one (johl) is slightly more edible. I was genuinely surprised to see many customers stopping over to get takeaway while I was there. They appeared to be regulars too. Hmm, maybe there are certain items on the menu that are actually ok? Or maybe they just don’t know any other better places in the area? (with an abundance of choices within a few mins away on Sydney Rd, I doubt it)

Ordered food online, found small cockroaches on food after having few bites. One of the food called daal was spoiled, to cuff of spoiled smell chef had added lots of vinegar but still had foul taste. Phone Called store many times, after complaining hangs up saying staff didn’t put it on food. Stated there’s no manager/chef at cafe. -10000 points customer service Girl was rude on phone. Had food poisoning 🤢. Going to complain going to complain about food safety.

What a disgraceful serving mate, Me & my friends all had just single bites. All food raw with bad smell. Common man show some class in our food. Momos smelling too bad & raw, chicken chowmin without chicken.

totally wasted my time! special now a day petrol costs dear. I purchased the voucher from Scoopon on 4th Mar 2022, went to redeem the food on 5th April 2022. the owner Han, said no longer accepting voucher!, then Why still selling the voucher at Scoopon! pic of front shop proof I was there.

READ REVIEWS BEFORE ORDERING! We ordered the sampler dishes for the first time. We'd never ordered from here before or been to the restaurant. We didn't read the reviews either. The meal was delivered reasonably quickly, and the food appeared fine. However we both came down with food poisoning after eating, and wished we'd read all these terrible reviews before we ordered.

This place is horrible. I regret giving them the benefit of the doubt and not looking up any reviews. The food was disgraceful and I copped food poisoning the next day to top it all off. Do yourself a favour and go somewhere else.

Unfortunately we had a very bad experience, nothing was satisfactory. We couldn’t even final the meal, the black bean noodle beef was tasteless, and the meat was extremely tough we couldn’t even eat it. The dumplings were overcooked and I couldn’t even eat the pork mix inside. The fried chicken was ok but I’ve had better. Was very disappointed. <br/><br/>

We ordered food from here through another app. The disappointment was the quality of food. While the Momos were ok (could have been better with more chicken in the chicken momos), the biggest disappointment were the chicken pieces in both Chilly Chicken and Chicken Chowmein. The chicken pieces were so hard and chewy, they were not enjoyable at all. The best part was the kind of pickled Chilly Oil that was sent in a small container.

Great service- we particularly loved the rice pudding, chilli momo and masala roti. The staff provided 5 star service

Arrived for dinner at 5.45 pm, only ones in the restaurant.  Waited until 6.15 pm for service.  Waitress had trouble understanding our orders.  Stir fried steak was extremely tough (my guess was stewing steak) and inedible.  My partner's meal came out 15 minutes after mine and the seafood was tough and overcooked.  They forgot the roti bread which we ordered.<br/>Would not recommend.

What a great little restaurant. As well as catering for a Rotary function the Big Belly served fresh fabulous food to our table of 17. The food is tasty and different, the staff friendly and accommodating. I’d recommend to anyone

Can't complain, delivery on Menulog on a Wednesday night, food hot and tasty, for 30 and lots of leftovers as I tried a few things, I wouldn't be whining, give em a crack, nothing ventured nothing gained

I really liked the steamed momo's here and the sauce with it. Turned out to be a great midnight snack with low prices. Also prawn garlic with roti was satisfactory.

The location is very good, close to public transport and car parking is just behind the shop.<br/><br/>The food is at best mediocre . The fried rice was supposed to have prawns, but unfortunately I didn’t see any. The fried noodle is too salty and the noodles are very hard to chew.<br/>The momo, chicken and mushroom cream noodle and curry beef are the best food out of all.<br/><br/>The service is ok, not much to complain. The score was given mainly considering the price based on the voucher, value for voucher money.

This was supposed to be all you can eat from Groupon. Got a fixed menu and had to argue for a second desert which was refused until we pushed hard.<br/>Wine was undrinkable. Food was terrible.<br/><br/>Do not come here<br/><br/>I will be complaining to Groupon

Late night order- for take away in person. <br/><br/>I told the waitress we were both vegetarian when we ordered the vege momos to be sure. Got home and took a bite and it was chicken. <br/><br/>Probably too trusting but since I've been a vegetarian for 15 years I feel sick that they served me chicken. <br/><br/>Understandable mistake but not a nice experience. <br/><br/>On the plus side their masala roti is amazing.

Excellent Nepalese food. The curries are so beautiful and authentic and the staff are always so lovely. I have tried a lot of the dishes and I'm yet to fault a single one. At a great price it's definitely worth a try. Check out the chicken or goat curry, the MoMo's, the dal and the roti. Superb :)

Good food, decent enough value. I had the chicken dumplings, masala roti, egg noodles, fried rice and gulab jamun. But I found that there was too much potato stuffing in the masala roti.

Came here for the all you can eat scoupon, they took half an hour to put together calamari rings, dumplings and a curry puff.<br/><br/>When I asked for more calamari they made me wait half an hour before telling me there were no calamari rings left.<br/><br/>Just wanted some rings fam

I didn't have high hopes due to the fact we were dining on a Groupon voucher, but the food was delicious and the staff were friendly.<br/>All of the entrees were fresh tasting and crisp and included 2 spring roll, some sort of curry puff and 2 little dumplings.<br/>Mains included fried rice, chicken noodles and meat with potato, all of which were fabulous.<br/>Desert which I did not enjoy, was rice pudding I thought it needed more cinnamon or nutmeg.<br/>Worth a try. <br/><br/>

Absolutely appalling food, the beef was tough like leather boots and i almost broke my teeth on their "vatmas sadako" that interestingly tasted like human teeth too. when i called to complain and told them their food was literally inedible, (my cat and dog wouldnt even have a go at it) they were rude, unhelpful and hung up on me. worst place i have ever dealt with and i will not rest until i have a full refund. Absolutely #abhorrent, #disgusting, #appalling, #despicable, #filthy, #gross, #feral, #rude, #obnoxious, #noxious, #inedible  - all of the above

Not satisfied with the service and food quality!!<br/><br/>We had gone for dinner, especially to have steamed momo. So, along with the chicken momo, we ordered goat chhoila and chilli chicken. The chicken chilli was quite satisfying in its taste, however, Chhoila was unexpectedly bad. It was cold as if just taken out from fridge and just done some top garnishing. The taste was also not as it should be for being Nepalese chhoila. We couldn’t go for more than 2 pieces of it and left whole plate. Now, we were waiting for our most awaited dish of the day “momo” or dumplings. After a long wait, it arrived on our table, but the first impression went bad for me. The yellowish colour of momo and haphazard organization of pieces looked creepy, though was expecting for good taste but even the taste was not like what it should be for a good momo. And on top of this, the momo dip was worse than the momo itself. <br/><br/>I will never try momo and chhoila there for sure. And do not recommend anyone.

Order some food to get delivered, got the order accepted to get our food delivered in 40 min. We wait an hour, still no food. Called them up and told us our order has been cancelled. Full of shit!!!!!!<br/>

Exquisite food I ordered for the first time tonight (delivered) and will most definitely again. Fish curry, chicken curry in coconut milk, spring rolls with a delicious sauce, potatoes and peas and to top it all off we shared a banana fritter with ice-cream.  Everything distinctly delicious. Totally recommend Big Asian Belly.

Coconut chicken curry with rice, chilli chicken stir fry, and the grilled chicken (I think). We enjoyed how spicy the food were. It was perfect. Full of flavour. <br/>The place was clean and had Bollywood/Nepali music playing. <br/>My partner however felt sick the next day... I suppose the reviews are right.

last night food experience with big belly was very bad. As i am food lover i have tried different restaurant in Melbourne and i know the delivery time for the food is usually 30-35 minutes. i order food at 11:04 pm from menulog and i got MSG from the restaurant that the delivery time is 12:04.am. It was my first experiences that i have to wait for the food for 1 hour. we called the restaurant and told that if they can deliver the food early than given time. They said they will try their best. We have waited completely for 1 hr:10 min and still we didn't get our food.Than my wife called  them and still they haven't done anything. after many attempt we got food finally after 1 hrs 30 min. This was really terrible experience. Is this what they are providing the  customer services  to their customer? They are not concern about the valuable time of their customers. if they cannot provide the services in time it is not better to include in menulogs mentioning the false statements. I have gone to restaurant many times and the experiences i got was alright but if i remember the last night experiences i wont go to the restaurant any more. <br/>thanks.

Had to visit this restaurant middle of the night somewhere around 11 as we had no options around for catching up for a quick lat night dinner. Though considering all the reviews in Zomato we dared to opt this restaurant. Parking was very easy as the whole street offers numerous street parking. Locating the restaurant was also easy. When we entered the one thing that striked us most was the set up and ambience. It had capacity of accommodating close to 50 members at once. Seating were comfortable. <br/>Now comes the food part.  Waitress had hard time to understand what we were ordering and some difficulty to explain us what the food is and what it contains and what not, (she end up taking wrong order anyway).<br/><br/>I will give full marks for time taken to prepare food and place it on our table carefully in a presentable way. Wow, it was charming, portions were great. However, taste and quality of food was as not appealing as it looked.<br/><br/>There is a function hall upstairs, if there is any party or event going on while you entered the restaurant, just walk away. It is very annoying to have a peaceful lunch or dinner when someone is stomping over your head and making a lot of noise. We end up paying for items which we did not order (costly) and with a bad stomach. More than that it feels very very bad wasting food.

Fantastic food, and Anita the waitress is fantastic. really enjoyed the goat curry!<br/>This place has great lighting and it was reasonably busy, great lunch specials too!

Used to like this place, until I received a meal with a large finger nail (I hope it wasn't toe!)  in my wife's meal. I emailed all parties but never got a response.  Eat there at your own risk.

Whilst the service is improving with time, the food is very authentic and packed full of flavour. The value is tremendous and portion sizes are very reasonable. Highly recommended.

The waitress who took our orders seriously need to learn some manners. She was so exasperating and my partner has already mentioned it why in the next review. Except the customer service, the food was okay.
Ronal
Tbh the food was great but the lady taking our order last night was really annoying she was literally pushing us to order extra food than what we can have. Like my brother wanted a glass of water and she's like we've got tea my brother said nahh she said we have beer again nah we have wine like what the hell?? If he wants something he will ask for it you don't need to keep pushing the customers. Also with the food we wanted about 2-3 diff dumplings and she's literally irritating and annoying by saying add 2 more add 2 more<br/>We are the one having those food not you so we know how much we want. Never do this to your customers, please take this as an advice. No harm feelings but really need to improve on it or else we'll never be back.

Saw this deal on Groupon. (ALL YOU CAN EAT for main course) $29 for 3 course meal with a glass of wine for 2 person! What a good deal!! <br/>So we bought the voucher and came in for dinner.<br/>I'm glad that we did, it was so yummy! Service was okay. <br/>We had Vegetarian entree, looks good and taste yum! <br/>Vegetarian main was good too! <br/>The only downside was the dessert. We don't enjoy it at all.<br/>We will come back for more. <br/>

Have been here for lunch twice and both times service was prompt and friendly and food was delicious.  I shared meat platter and plate of dumplings with my partner both times.  I found it very good value.

well we brought a voucher that was an all you can eat, and had such terms as fill up on, the owner had told the staff it was only mains that were all you can eat<br/>the terms of the voucher were clear online and we pointed them out to the staff but they had been told by the owner no this is the way it is<br/>the dumplings were amazing so was the calamari and the mains curry<br/>the noodles were so salty and spicy none of the 4 of us could eat them<br/>the rice was ok it said it had seafood in it but it had just the tails part of a prawn no meat of the prawn just the tail and it was cold when delivered<br/>The stuffed flat bread was yummy with the sauce of the curry<br/>Highlight was the dumplings<br/>our low was the Slow Slow Slow service drinks took 20 min to arrive <br/>Entree took 35 min to arrive<br/>also the dessert stated a choice of but we didn't get a choice!<br/>and the lack of all you could eat which was a total lie<br/>all you can eat is all you can eat, we would not have gone overboard but when you sell a product that what you should get not oh no thats not included<br/>Shame on the owner! we have reported it to the coupon company too!<br/>The deal should say 3 course meal with drink not all you can eat with drink <br/>The staff tried hard saying are you happy now! well no we were not and we will not be back just because the owner put something on the internet that he was not providing

Have been here for dinner more than a couple of times and every time the staff are always presentable and very very friendly!  Food had good serving sizes for a great value and of course, tasted great!!!! Would definitely recommend you come here and try the momo's and goat curry with rice. The setting of the restaurant is very cosy and welcoming.

Great chow mein and pakora in the set menu but wish there was more of these. The dishes were fairly spartan and lacked substance but solid workaday food. Excellent value for money though, only $15 for the all you can eat deal, though you had to preorder.

TBH I don't like food .not good at all ..only thing i like is chowmein .very rude customer service .<br/><br/>NEVER GONNA GO BACK.<br/><br/><br/><br/> <br/>

Surprised by the fact that it wasn't busier. Great food. Friendly Service. Good value for money. I have been here several times and never disappointed. Decor is pretty dull though.

The place was empty when we walked in. Tell tail sign I guess. Mushroom entree was nice but it stopped there. The other 2 dishes where over cooked l.

Worst place I have ever been on Sydney Road rude inattentive staff, noisy atmosphere and flavourless and overpriced food!! Please do yourself a favour and DO NOT go here!!!

A great addition to the area for home delivery. The food has been very high quality on the 5 occasions we have had delivery. Chilli Momo and beef salad are my favourite

This is one the worst representation of Nepalese cusine and impatient service. It's embrassing  to say that this is a Nepalese restaurant representing Nepalese cusine. Never have I ate this kind of discusting  food and experienced extremely rude service. Momos that we were served tasted nothing like a "decent momo". Nepalese chow mein is not even chow mein, more like whole heap of masalas and oil dumped into a plate. Choila in this restaurant were an insult to Nepalese cusine as the serving pieces were so tiny and were tasteless. Names on the menu were attractive and sounded very authentic , than reality striked. Waste of time and money. We went home with a big belly full of rubbish, literally. -100/10

Gorgeous decor and delicious food. best momos for miles! Nepalese with a smile :) Try the chilli spiced crispy soy beans for a great beer snack.

Lovely staff and great value! I had the vegetarian platter and the staff were really happy to have it altered for me to be vegan. They gave me extra roti instead of rice (which is mixed with ghee). Big portion size, really hot and fresh, would recommend!
