Review Rupert On Rupert - Collingwood

Samantha McCartney
We had our wedding at Rupert recently and it was perfect. Mali was amazing to work with, so professional and helpful, particularly through our 4 wedding reschedules due to covid lockdowns. She made the process so easy and was so supportive. The venue itself was stunning and many guests commented on how fantastic it was. The food was brilliant and the waitstaff and bar staff were so friendly and helpful on the night. Thank you to everyone at Rupert for making our wedding such a wonderful experience!

Such a nice venue. Great atmosphere, nice food. Only downside is the open plan bathroom, it doesn’t feel very private and the hand dryer can be heard from the main bar.

An absolute gem! The atmosphere, the food, the staff..and the list goes on. If you’re after a beautiful space packed with indoor garden paradise for an intimate, smaller wedding, this one’s for you 👍

We had our wedding at Rupert on Rupert last month. The venue manager, Mali and the Rupert crew are amazing. Seasoned pros in the business. During the lead up to our wedding, Mali was accommodating, responsive, flexible and patient throughout. She'll go above and beyond to ensure your event is tailored to your vision. On the day, everything went swimmingly to plan, absolutely faultless. Tables and chairs appeared and disappeared like magic. All our guests were raving about the food and wine selection. And the staff are one of the best in hospitality industry. They all made us feel so special and got into the party spirit - some of them even joined us on the dance floor! We've also been to Rupert many times when opened as a restaurant to the public. The food and quality of service is equally exceptional. Go check out Rupert on Rupert!

Went to a beautiful wedding on Thursday night. The venue is stunning and with so much greenery, you didn’t need to do a lot more with decor. Would recommend! Staff were amazing! Grace, is a rockstar! She was so entertaining and fun!

I could not fault the experience I had here. We booked for a large dinner and mainly had share plates and pizzas - they were all great. The staff were so incredibly helpful, they really took the experience to another level. The place itself has such an amazing atmosphere with its moody lights, ambient music and gorgeous plants. I wish I had found this place sooner, I will certainly be back!

Good food, nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Bit too difficult to grab the attention of staff though. And I'm a big eater, but the lamb dish (which is tasty) serves 3 people. We were with two and I'd rather have had a smaller (and cheaper) serve, which would have left room for a side of salad.

I have been obsessed with this place since the first moment I found it on Broadsheet, and getting to have our wedding here was just a dream come true. Aside from being a visually stunning venue, Mali, Alex and the team are a group of hospo legends who made our day so special and smooth. The food and drink fare on offer was absolutely outstanding, and not once did I have to stress or worry about anything that may happen because I knew they were onto it. Understanding and calm, the service they provided to both us and our guests was top quality. We dined here several times before our wedding as well and the service and quality of food was no different. Will be coming back for years and years until I can't anymore.

We attended a wedding here last night, 3/3/18, the food was excellent.....we were sated, the drinks flowed and the music was loud. The staff were fantastic, we can't remember being anywhere where ALL the staff were friendly, accomodating and just so nice....all night long. CONGRATULATIONS, you have it ALL in your lovely plant filled place in Collingwood

My wife had her 40th at RoR with about 70 people in the private room and we both had such a fantastic experience at the venue and with the staff. First rate..

We're still coming down off the high that was our wedding at Rupert last weekend! My husband and I live overseas and planned everything from afar (with a few visits in between) with the wonderful Mali who's guidance, professionalism and style is second to none! She and the Rupert team were a dream to work with! Everything from the delectable food (we had cocktail style canapés, bowls and pizzas), to the expertly made cocktails, flowers, and just general coolness of the venue made for a killer party where all our guests, both young and old, felt welcomed from the get-go and had an absolute blast! The bar, floor and kitchen teams were wonderful, fun, friendly and so attentive - every single guest was so well looked after and we had so much fantastic feedback throughout the night and this week. We highly recommend Rupert for hosting a special event, or just popping in for a delicious dinner and cheeky drink. Thank you so much Mali, Rick and team for helping us throw a damn good love party!

We had a function here yesterday afternoon. The food, service and space in general was just fabulous. We couldn't have had a better day and the guests were nothing but complementary of our choice in venue. Even the planning leading up to the day was seamless, with fantastic customer service. Thanks to the diligent and detailed staff that made the day so memorable. Will most certainly be back.

Really liked it - very chilled. However - one of the staff (long haired guy) pretended that the table was going to be be booked in 30 mins. It was an obvious attempt to get us to order food. If this had not happened I would have rated 5 stars but I think the managers must have a bonus target ahead of customer service. Definitely a great place to go - but don't feel pressured by the staff :-)
Belinda Lawes
Food is great, we got asked how we were paying before we even got the menus and got reminded every 5 mins that we had to vacate the table in 2hrs, even though there was no booking after us- your staff suck!
Rose Smith
The staff are just so friendly and always on the ball. Food is fantastic, great ambiance chill vibes. Hidden gem 💎

Love this place... Tyrone and the rest of the staff are great as is the food

Great hidden restaurant in a converted warehouse in Collingwood. Stunning decor on the inside with all the plants around. Great cocktails selections and they have happy hour too if you come early enough. Everything here is made to perfection and an absolute delight to eat. Amazing modern Australian food and certainly one to try. I can't wait to come back for more!

Oh what a night! My partner had been trying to get us into this restaurant for some time so I was pretty stoked when I realised this was the place that we were going too.<br/><br/>This restaurant is in a side street in Collingwood. It’s located in an old shoe factory. This place has style. It reminded me of a very cool 60’s place, something that you’d see on tele.<br/><br/>The service was excellent, a special mention to Alex the waitress and the other lovely waitress who’s name I didn’t get.<br/><br/>Food wise we ordered half a wood fired oven chook, the meat fell off the bone.<br/><br/>Pork belly, trout, croquettes, anchovy and that’s Amore local cheese. <br/><br/>The food was amazing, sooo tasty, everything was cooked perfectly, it was full of flavour and the food was locally sourced. <br/><br/>My La Sirene beer was yummy hahaha the vino d’lish and this has become my new fav restaurant at the moment. Well at least in Collingwood. <br/><br/>See you again... soon :)

I absolutely love this place. My friend Carlos had recommended me to go here. Great food, service, drinks and the place is so pretty. Great place to have a date :)
Kate Dougherty
Spacious venue with a cool vibe. Service was friendly but i was a little underwhelmed by the food. My main qualm was that despite wanting a nice leisurely dinner everything we ordered literally came our all at once. It was slightly overwhelming and gave the impression that they wanted to rush us. Having said that the food was petty tasty. Between two we had the chicken and leak croquettes, the zucchini flowers, the kingfish, the rare beef and the quail. Still hungry, we also went for a bowl of chips (more like wedges). The croquettes and the zucchini flowers were highlights. All other dishes were pleasant but possibly didn’t have quite enough seasoning.

Another lunchtime adventure through Collingwood - this time we're delving deep into the backstreets to Rupert on Rupert. Hidden down a dark alleyway, it looks pretty unassuming from the outside but walking in you better be ready to wowed by the amazing space and the equally impressive food!. This has to be a stand out in terms of spaces...it is a converted warehouse so it has that industrial feel to it but mixes it up with different materials and quirky pieces to create the perfect eclectic environment. Just based on the look and feel I was ultra excited to see what was on offer here.

We had just flown into Melbourne and this was our first restaurant we came across to start our week of eating and exploring the city. It did not let us down!<br/><br/>We loved everything about the place,  from the service, the interior, to the menu. <br/>Our table enjoyed everything that we ordered and we gave it a real good shot of finishing every mouthful. The food was that good! <br/>The only thing I wished was that I left room for dessert. I missed out on trying the Peanut Butter Skillet Cookie (boo hoo) <br/><br/>We came before the evening rush but you could see that it would be a very busy place as tables started arriving as we were leaving.
@esjaysam
Great vibe! Came here on a Friday night for dinner and drinks and the place was buzzing. Pizzas were great and staff were friendly and attentive - a real winner!
Brunny Girl
Hidden with an industrial feel in one of Collingwood's many back streets. Great for a  catch up with friends before heading out for the evening. Service always quick and friendly. Can be a bit noisy later on.

We celebrated our son's 21st birthday here a few months ago and it was superb. Our son is vegetarian but the remainder of the family are carnivores so we were at a loss to find a place with the right blend of both great vegetarian and meat dishes. Rupert on Rupert exceeded expectations and the food was absolutely fantastic - every dish was excellent. My son was spoilt with choice and attention by Jo and Tyrone and they made the afternoon so enjoyable for all concerned. Atmosphere and decor was relaxed and comfortable. Some of our favourite dishes were the smoked ham hock croquettes, warm kale & beluga lentils, pork belly & urfa spiced kent pumpkin - too many to mention! So on behalf of my son and 45 carnivores - thank you so much Mali, Jo and Tyrone.
The Modern Gourmand
When wandering the old industrial backstreets of Collingwood it is easy to feel both lost and uneasy as the empty, dark and rather gritty interior of one of the inner north’s more popular spots leaves much to one’s imagination. The vibrancy of Smith St is well noted, but it is in Collingwood’s residential and industrial interior in which little has been done to bring this large area into its own – or indeed into the 21st century.
Mahlia
I loved it here. Amazing staff so so friendly and know exactly what to recommend ! Food was divine and I loved the atmosphere it had, was so nicely decorated
Nelly
There is definitely a fun, quirky vibe about the place. We entered and immediately we felt the energy and were excited to dig into the menu.<br/><br/>The menu definitely intrigued us, and was a little confusing as everything sounded fabulous. In the end we decided upon the sharing plates giving us the opportunity to try more. We were not disappointed and finished off with a hazelnut chocolate pudding that was to die for.<br/><br/>When we did finally leave, we were did so raving about the food. Also left grinning ear to ear and full to the brim. Can't wait to come back.<br/><br/>As for the staff being cold or unfriendly. (From the other reviews). Perhaps they have taken this on as as feedback. Because what we experienced the complete opposite, and it was a an extremely busy Saturday night.
Sara Nix
Really nice space but staff were completely disorganized and rude at times. They made us move tables once then we vacated our table when our 2hour booking time was up to have a drink on a nearby couch where we were asked to move again to a 'free space' that would seat all 8 us only to be shoved into a corner with 4 stools. The place was also packed in all areas so when we were trying to eat dinner at the table there were people standing directly behind us drinking. Might be a nice place for a function but would not recommend for dinner and/or the bar
Lily Lapper
What an incredible venue! The space itself is amazing. Pair that with the friendly and knowledgeable staff and delicious pizza and you are on to a winner! Side note - whoever chose the tap beers definitely knows their stuff(ask about the nitro tap) Can't believe I didn't know about this place sooner...
Good Food Good Mood
Attended a hen's lunch here on the weekend, what a chic location! There's a delightful little private area decked out with chesterfield couches where you can seat 20 or so people which is ideal for a small event. The rest of the place is also perfectly styled with lots of lush greenery in true warehouse conversion style. We ate mixed olives with house sourdough, farro fennel walnut salad, lemon fried squid with black olive tapenade, ham hock croquettes, lamb sausage with pumpkin hummus and then came the pizzas! We had two varieties, a garlic lemon thyme mushroom and a salami smoked capsicum. Not necessarily the food I would usually order but wonderful to try something different and perhaps a little more exotic. An absolutely lovely experience

What a wonderfull and well hidden gem! Came here with a group of friends, we enjoyed the service, good selection of drinks and a large menu. We all very much enjoyed the pizzas! <br/>I would definitely come back(-:

Cool cocktail drinks, tasty pizza with a decent thin crust, beautiful plant decorated interior, all this makes Rupert a classy yet accessible bar with good vibes. The staff were ridiculously friendly, loved the cheese pizza and would definitely recommend for a laid back catch up with friends. I'll be coming back!
Ben Milroy
Share the feeling of a few different reviewers... cool, airy venue, well furnished and with a smooth vibe. Would come back but just to hang out for a bev, the food was forgettable and slightly overpriced.
Teema
I loved this place. Love the vibe, drinks, decorations but not the staff. Not sure why the staff were not friendly at all. Except the cold behaviour staff, everything else impressed me.
Keith Lawrence
Cool, urban chic vibe - fabulous warehouse conversion that 'speaks' to its Collingwood location. It's a big big space but divided off into sections - the dining area, the drinks lounge and its Chesterfield sofas and chairs and the linking 'corridor' aimed at more casual drinking and dining.<br/><br/>Fairly limited menu - a few sharing tapas plates (tasty squid, octopus, salads) and platters (veggie and meats) along with half a dozen pizzas - excellent eggplant and salami, slightly odd Curds & Whey (five cheeses) that includes a sweet cheese. Big drinks list form beers to wine to cocktails - music volume goes up a notch or two as time passes, but not so much that it becomes overly intrusive.
Mr. Sasquatch
Went for an early dinner on a Saturday night and the place was chockers. It's a pretty standard trendy Collingwood warehouse vibe with lots of plants, recycled wood and iron etc. But the food stood out - we shared 3 of the share plates between 2 (trout crudo, heritage carrots, friend squid) which were all just excellent, pretty healthy and only around $15 each. Service was friendly. They lost a star for the terrible pumping R&B, but I guess some people like that s...

Collingwood has fully embraced the warehouse conversion cafe scene with at least 4 cafés opening in unusual warehouse style spaces that were once car repair joints or storage for clothing companies. Rupert may be new but it has already made it clear that they mean business. Operating as a bar and pizza joint (great big copper fronted pizza oven) they have already had parties for Drake (drake day) and attracted Melbourne's a well dressed as part of unofficial fashion festival events and product launches. The number of times I've been here were for special events and as the space is so huge I wonder if they will be a lot on a normal night or will it always feel a little "too big". Anyway it's a welcome addition to the hidden Collingwood bar scene.
LittleMissPiggy
Really cool place hidden down a side street in Collingwood. Massive space, cool layout and trendy decor but no outdoor seating for smokers which puts some of you and your friends out a little. The staff are super friendly and table service for food and drinks is handy! Prices are ok considering the food isn't too fab but the place has a great vibe for a drink on a Friday night. Would go back for a drink but would probably skip the food.
Goran Stevanoski
Staff were very rude, very long wait from slow bartenders, all the excuses I heard that night was its busy... Considering we had a open bar for a 40 people function the so called "owner" thought he'd be smart and poor half shots in our drinks.. Not cool, when your spending 3k, last thing you should do is rip off the paying customer!
Benny
I've been a number of times and always enjoyed it but tonight was just great. Service was bang on. Cocktails were new and interesting but mostly, it was the food that lifted a couple of notches. I'm fussy and couldn't fault it. Even when fifty odd people walked in at the same time. <br/>Sit near the fire, order the Hemingway and nibble on the jerk chicken. Happy man

Went for scarf dinner. Love the idea. Nice warm indoor design. Should come over another day and try other dishes. What a Lovely restaurant.
Kushala Prem
A really funky venue with soul and style. Been there a few times now and love the vibe - it is an oasis in the midst of trendy urban grunge. Really enjoy the food & fresh flavoured cocktails. It's becoming my go to place to meet friends in town. Go Foxy!

I loved Rupert on Rupert! What an amazing space & great atmosphere, warm, groovy, music wasn't too loud, friendly staff, awesome cocktails & yum food! I'll be back.
Shockjockdeano
Went a few weeks ago for a drink with some mates. I remember walking past this place and it used to be a motor cycle repair shop or something similar.. Anyway, just loved it. Drinks were a little bit expensive, but the fit-out was choice. I recon it will get cold in winter but the day we went was warm and the windows were open. Can't wait to return.
Two Sheds
Seriously funky space tucked in darkish back street. Nicely spacious, well appointed and stylish. Lovely tasty and innovative food and terrific friendly service. The beef cheek was wonderful. All sides were good. Refreshingly clipped wine list. Enjoyed the service. This is the type of place that makes Melbourne great. Only the grumpy and ungracious wouldn't like it. Seeking to return and very soon.

Came here on Saturday night for a bday drinks and nibbles. The pizzas, average and barely any substance of carnivore on them are over priced for a small pushing easily $20.<br/>The IPA beer as recommended by the girl who was looking after our table was a very handsome $22. My table said not to argue about, but I knew better. No beer especially a hipster Brew is worth $22. The girl whose attention I brought this to was as surprised as me and she confirmed it was in fact $11.<br/>Another thing, when i was ordering drinks at the bar - 2 vodka sodas, the gent was so kind to make 2 sodas- less the vodka and try to charge full price. That shit doesn't fly with me, and he was offended that I told him I did not see you put any alcoholic elixir in the glass to numb the pain of being in Collingwood . He threw my glass across the bar, and made the drinks giving me dagger eyes. Like dude, chill out. Don't like customer service, Go work in the library. <br/>
TasteofSoph
Lovely ambiance and great music but sadly disappointed by the service and quality of food. Waited 45 mins to even be asked to order and had to ask 3 times for a food menu. Wait staff were nowhere to be seen most of the night and even struggled to find someone to ask and pay for the bill. Pizza was very average at best. Have been here before and had great experiences, but after this will not be returning.

Family favourite to come to rupert's. Staff incredibly attentive and knowledgable of food and wine list. Delicious food- love the pizzas and chicken nibbles!

73 Rupert Street. Remember the address because it is soon going to become the hip new spot in town. Hard to capture the vibe of this space in words but it is essentially an ex-industrial warehouse serving up wines and cocktails, with fancied up farmer fare to share. The space is well lit, has high ceilings, generous amounts of timber and ample greenery. Run by a husband and wife duo, the four walls really do capture the simple pleasures of life. <br/><br/>We had 4 bottles of wine and a few pizzas to share. We are definitely coming back.

We went for some drinks here on a Friday night and were impressed. The fit out is amazing, good selection on beers and we had a couple of cocktails that were nice too. Didn't eat as we had organised dinner elsewhere. Only one thing let this place down for me, and that was a couple of the guys behind the bar. Almost felt like we weren't cool enough to order a drink off them and one gave my mate some fair attitude when he asked a question about a couple of the beers. In saying that, the young lady behind the bar was lovely.

We decided to have a girls night out on Wednesday , after tossing around a few options we settled on Rupert! What a top decision that was 😊 Rupert is an amazing space down a fairly quiet back street in Collingwood . We had booked a table which wasn't ready when we arrived, no biggie we were happy to wait, it was quite busy at the time. The staff went out of their way to make us happy to wait with a glass of wine on the house , tick! Table sorted, menus in hand we decided to order 3 pizzas to share. Placed our order with extremely attentive/friendly (wish I knew her name) staff member requesting gf pizza bases. Pizzas arrived , but alas the bases were not gf, mistake by staff member who apologizing that it was her mistake preceded to place an order to top of queue (on the house) for a gf pizza . What an absolute star ⭐️. The pizzas were very tasty and filling, didn't finish them all. We had paid our bill, and then our super attentive staff member returned to the table to say that Jimmy the bartender would like to make us each a cocktail on the house!!!! Wow Jimmy, Rupert you won our hearts, what super amazing service you went above and beyond and it certainly will not be forgotten, in this day & age such service is often hard to find! We will be back and shouting your virtues to all ❤️❤️
DrinkAndFeast
I reeeally like coming here. Big open spaces, tucked away from the main streets, cool crowd, drinks and food to boot. The staff here are excellent and very personable. We enjoyed the food also, with the menu having a bit of everything to eat. We had the charcuterie board which was deelish - especially enjoyed the walnut. It's more of a warm meats/veg board than cold cuts that some would expect. The ambience here is thriving. People here drink, eat and are merry. I noticed its one of few restaurants where u see a sizeable crowd hang out at the front and have smoke (generally a club thing, cool cats anyone).<br/>Rupert has become a choice casual Collingwood venue for me, more for drinks and hangs than the food.

As a local, always pleased when something new comes along closer to home than Smith or Brunswick streets. <br/><br/>Without reading any reviews decided to try this place on our way home from the gym.<br/><br/>Saturday night, place was full but not overly crowded. We happened to get a table very quickly. Really nice large space and well decorated. <br/><br/>Only stopping in for a couple of drinks and some food. Hills Cider on tap, good. Bastards Son on tap, also good.<br/><br/>Food - hm... I'm going to say overpriced for what you get. I really wanted jerk chicken, was quite excited by this in fact. But what arrived were five drumettes, please note I said DRUMETTE, (and I'm talking a normal chicken not a steroid fed chicken), on a puffed up bed of salad that I can't even tell you what could have puffed that salad up except well placed air. The chicken was sweet (not what I've come to know as jerk chicken). The only heat from the jalapenos mixed through the salad.<br/><br/>We also ordered the mussels. These were good, would probably have them again, however still overpriced.<br/><br/>The staff were friendly and helpful. Attentive without being over the top. It was definitely 'service with a smile'. <br/><br/>I've not completely ruled out this place. Would give it another go.

Pretty funky fit out in the back streets of Collingwood (and oh so Collingwood it is). Some of the food is very good, some not so much. Make some good cocktails and have an otherwise extensive drink list.
Kate Daisy Mitchell
Venue is okay, has a pretty good atmosphere but waited over an hour for a pizza and a share plate without an apology or explanation. Had to pull them up after they served our food, then they offered to take it off the bill. But seriously, waiting over an hour for seriously average food, waste of time and money and it's seriously not cheap.
Jenna Jay_Food
Absolutely love this place. Very Melbs! Such a great find :) The high ceilings give it a great atmosphere even when busy. Really spacious. Perfect for a weekend day sesh!<br/><br/>The staff are great, really friendly and helpful. We ordered a little selection of food just to pick at throughout the day - everything was delicious! Ill definitely be back.
Cathy Marceline
Had a great vibe. The food was good (but not excellent) but we had a great night all the same. I had a really nice cocktail which wasn't too pricey. Got a fright when I spotted the stuffed fox! Good for a night out
Findmesomethingspecial
Went to this place a few times around the opening, have to say that my most recent feed was not that impressing. The vibe inside is warm and cosy, a mix of different groups of people. The host is a really nice quirky guy, and generally the staff are pretty helpful. Just a shame the food has really gone down hill guys... Won't be coming back for that
Crdav1
Great spot, food was delicious and love the fireplace, I'll be coming back for sure. Mushroom pizza, calamari and parsnip chips were a stand out.
Leon
Amazing venue!! Food was good too but wasn't as happy with the pizzas. Overall though a cool place and good vibe.
Tom Bryant
Randomly found this place for a drink on Friday night and thought it was really cool warm spot on a shitty Melbourne night , great vibe and plenty of good beers on the menu.. Looking forward to returning for dinner one night !
Pineapple Apple
I loved Rupert on Rupert!! so easy to make an online booking, service was great, I was impressed at the staff's recommendations; they knew their menu. The space is amazing, nice and warm, the music was great, I read a previous review that talks about super loud basey music, it wasn't like that at all. The food was divine and came out really quickly, there were lots of vegetarian options too.
Little_mackay
Don't expect speedy service. Great atmosphere and a really cool hidden gem. <br/>BUT service was horrible, waited over 2 hours for our Pizza, was so angry! Pizza was yum but not many toppings, just could not believe that it took over 2 hours for the food to come out.
Amandalgrant
Yum!. Went here with the girls for dinner the other night. Really nice atmosphere, love the decor and lighting. The staff were friendly. We shared some dishes..the tofu flat bread, the calamari and a couple of woodfired pizzas. All dishes were delicious! Will definitely be back!
Jkcrows84
Hmmmmmm, only average. Read about this place on Broadsheet. Found the pizza's to be pretty average, but perhaps it's just a teething problem? With Ladro within walking distance I will probably go there next time. They did have cheap cocktails through, which is a rarity in the area!!
Jdsgamesdesign
Only time will tell..... We went to Rupert early on a Sunday evening and was surprised to see the place packed to the brim, the lack of advertising or website doesn’t appear to have hindered the hype around the new joint. <br/>Overall the experience was very positive. The pizzas went down a hit amongst the group and the shared plates that we had also were a hit. <br/>The mussels were the star of the show with the Calamari being a little hit and miss but overall not too bad considering this place has only just opened and will probably take a little while to find their feet.<br/>The Craft beers list was impressive and it was nice to see a number of the local beers being showcased all for reasonable prices.<br/>The place its self is a very simplistic but cool design with a very open and welcoming feel and the staff all seemed to be very friendly and helpful.<br/>The only real downside to the place was the music, I am not one to complain about music in a venue usually as what some may dislike others may like but the 2 and a half hours we were at the place the music didn’t change and we were subjected to the same base heavy music that the speakers clearly couldn’t handle, I think a speaker upgrade is needed if you want to blast out the tunes.<br/>Overall our experience was positive, the food was good, the staff were good the beers we excellent but there is still a lot of room for improvement, it’s a cool venue and I’m sure we will frequent it again but right now I think a bit of time is needed for them to iron out the creases. <br/><br/>Rupert has the potential to be one of Collingwood’s greats but just not quiet there yet.
