Review Rockwell And Sons - Collingwood

George Forgan-Smith
One of my fave "meat" restaurants in Melbourne. Penalty of great entree size plates to you can enjoy lots of different flavours. I love the rib burger however tonight the pick of the evening was def the twice cooked crispy pork. Def worth the trip!!!

One of my favourite places in Melbourne for a burger! The double Patty SMASH is like the best big mac you'll ever eat! Well priced food and a cool digs complete the package

That sweet spot between fine dining and pub grub is where Rockwell & Sons thrives. Owned by Manu Potoi (ex Attica and Stokehouse) and Casey Wall (ex Cutler & Co. and The Spotted Pig, NYC), the pair can do no wrong rollin' out appetite pleasers with gusto. The burgers and sambos are legit. A highlight for any Melbourne food adventure.

Yep a pretty damn good burger. Melts in your mouth and it’s clear that a chef has put a lot of thought into all of the necessary ingredients that would make this burger better. Really soft texture and all the elements of the burger are basically done right. I think this burger is better without the bacon in it though, it’s not bad with it, it’s just unnecessary to add it. The sweet potato wedges are awesome too, and have some herbs and possibly lemon sprinkled on them.

Best burgers on the planet. The double smash is a must but I like it as a single smash. The rib sandwich is pretty awesome as well. Wednesday nights are fried chicken night. The fried chicken is spectacular 👌🏻 Hush puppies are pretty amazing too 😛

I hadn't been to Rockwell and sons in a few years, but I missed how amazing their burger was, so decided to revisit them on my cheat day. The place was still as busy as ever, but surprisingly the wait wasn't that long for our food. Staff there were very nice. Attentive and friendly. Lamb ribs were very tasty. Little on the dry side, but still pretty tender. Chicken burger had a kind of zest to it. Not like any chicken burgers I've had recently. Quite liked that actually. As for the main event, the double beef covered in cheese and their special sauce. Not sure what was in the sauce. But I don't remember the burger having it the last time I was there. Sort of tasted like thousand island. Not sure I liked the sauce. But the damn was soft and sweet and the meat was cooked perfectly. So overall I enjoyed it!

Great place for a bite to eat. They have fried chicken Wednesdays which are booked in advance, and well worth it!

Sorry to say that I only visited on the closing weekend at the behest of a friend. He hyped the double patty smash up significantly and it did not disappoint. Burger was delicious, though I still didn't come around on the Kraft cheese. Service and price were great. Drinks were also delicious. Hopefully I get to try whatever the team move onto next. Best of luck.

locked in the eagerly anticipated double patty smash burger - perfect balance of juicy meat and sauce in a tight bun... had a bite of the fried chicken burger which was really tender and great. sides we had the fries which were good with yummy dipping sauce (too small serving between 2 imo) and the bbq duck wings which were amazing! topped it off with a fresh home made lemonade... keen to go back for the ribs burger - highly recommended burger joint, def top 5 in melbourne, individual burger the double patty smash would be one of my fave burgers from melbourne ive tried so far
Christian Benta
Best burger in Melbourne. Everything is on point with a juicy patty. But they don't only serve burgers. Their rib sandwich is also a strong recommendation. Great with coleslaw and the IPA on tap.
Jordan Partridge
The BEST burger. Add in the new compressed watermelon and a sweet tea... Wow! Tasty!

Recently went to lunch here after much hype. The food was quite good and they had an awesome IPA. HOWEVER, when it came time to pay the bill (and the restaurant was very quiet on this Friday afternoon), our server refused to split the $70 bill half cash and half credit card (ironically, doing so would have saved them a few cents). For a decent restaurant in the modern era, I find this unforgivably annoying. One of the ways that so many Australian restaurants are stuck in the 19th century, and the kind of mindlessly annoying end to an otherwise good experience that will cause me not to come back :-( At least if you go as a party of one, I can highly recommend it. Otherwise, there are plenty of modern-minded places also serving good food.

Delivery via uber eats. Took an hour to receive our food and when it arrived the burgers were cold and soggy, half the chips were missing and also cold and the drinks never arrived. Not impressed!
Lewis Greenhalgh
Highly recommend for all round goodness. Awesome food and vibe

double patty smash forever. Best burgers in Australia hands down

It tastes like you want those photos on Instagram to actually taste.

For anyone and everyone in Melbourne. The joint to lay back and have fun with a couple of pals. Keep going the way you are team !!!
Phil Roberts
Big call, but I rate the burgers up there with best I have had. The rib sandwich is ridiculous! Great import beer as well. Loved it!
Michael Tsahrelias
Chat food, chat service. If I could give zero stars I would!
Rich Kemp
The best fried chicken around. The broccoli salad is also to die for. Get yourselves down there and drink beers & an enjoyable feed!

Truly abysmal experience from start to finish. Booked a table for 9:30PM and ordered our food straight away expecting to get our food at the latest 10PM. Our food arrived at 11PM, it does not take 1:30 hours to make a couple burgers and sides. At 10:30 I checked the kitchen to see what was going on. Chefs were standing around, making conversations with each other when they should’ve been cooking our food. It was only when we reminded the waiter at 10:45 that our food still hadn’t come they started to cook our food! On top of all that, our burger patties were the size of sliders making our burger taste like one big burger bun. This was my favourite burger joint back in the day, now I have a sour lasting memory of this place. At least treat your customers with respect! Horrible

Please note score is purely based on service. <br/>After hearing great things about the double smash patty, I was really excited to try it before it closes down and am extremely disappointed to say the service here is absolutely shocking.. <br/>upon arriving at 1:10PM, I had to put my name and number down and wait “20 mins”. 40 minutes passes by and still no call so I went to check up on them, only for them to say it will be another 30 minutes.. after seeing our hesitant faces, he said 15 minutes... so it 15 or 30 mins? 🤷‍♀️ anyway we hesitantly agreed to this too. <br/>It is 2:00PM and we were starving. My friends saw some empty tables and thought it was no harm askjng whether they were available, only to be greeted by the gentleman whom got annoyed for repeating himself “I said 15 minutes”. (but is it 15 or really 30 mins? 🤷‍♀️LOL) <br/>Sad to say the same thing happened to a friend of mine who recommended me to try the burger despite the horrible service. <br/>This dude is costing this store a fortune.. What a shame.

Really great but very rich food. The burgers are really good...actually everything is really good. It’s a great idea to order a few things and share.
Bubbles
Really awesome burgers! The patty is one of best we had and the kombu mayo is sooo good. Plenty of kombu flavor. One star less due to lack of service and quite pricy for the size of the burger.
Sarah
Came here early on a Friday night, I had the fried chicken burger, with tater tots. The burger was really tasty, the chicken was yummy, juicy and crunchy! Would definitely come again
Sesame Eats
The Double Patty Smash Burger here is seriously incredible. Not too heavy or big compared to a lot of other burgers, and is made with soft buns and delicious special sauce. The coleslaw here also follows the same idea; it’s light but very tasty. Apart from the great food, this place has a nice atmosphere for weekend drinks with friends, and the service is pretty good as well.
Virgil
If you want quality American styled food. This is the place to go! Fried chicken sandwich is fantastic! Has a great atmosphere! Haven't tried the dessert here yet though. Hopefully soon enough.
BridgetSwee
Love their double patty smash burger! Tend to mosy on down at lunch time for a car ride while the baby is sleeping and then chow down on a burger and curly fries in the car! Couldn't be more delicious!
Hangry Horace
We came for lunch on a Friday and ordered the single and double patty smash burgers. The burgers came with a side of curly fries and the food was amazing! The burger patty was cooked to perfection and the curly fries were crispy. We also ordered a serve of tater tots and they were to die for! I will recommend this place to anyone!

4.5. This laidback venue has an American vibe and influence, attentive staff, and some of the tastiest burgers I've had in Melbourne (much to my surprise). The buffalo wings were tasty and the croquettes were good too. We shared the double patty smash burger with bacon and this was stunning. The bacon was crispy, the bun was good, and that beef patty with sauce was delish! We also ordered the pulled pork burger which was great, and had a nice spicy kick. French fries and cauliflower as sides were pretty good as well. Will definitely be back to try more on their menu which looks like it changes frequently. Awesome find on Smith St.<br/><br/>Came back again and the double patty smash burger was just as good as I remember, probably one of my favourite burgers in Melbourne. Love everything about it. We also shared the mojo pork and fried chicken sandwiches which were both great. Deviled egg and pickled vegetables were really good, and the tater tots were crispy and delicious! Service was quick and attentive. Highly recommended.

My first ever smashed patty burger! The Rockwell and Sons Double Smashed Patty Burger with added bacon!<br/><br/>If you really want a juicy burger that'll melt in your mouth, go give them a shot! From the buns to the beef to the cheese, everything about it is so soft. You don't even need teeth to bite through that burger! The bacon is the crispiest thing I've ever eaten and if you don't believe me, go try it for yourself! The only downside was how oily and greasy the burger was, and I felt there were a little too much unnecessary grease in the burger.<br/><br/>Really amazing burger with slight improvements, but it's still worth it! Don't forget to get their crispy bacon!

This is my favourite burger place in Melbourne! <br/>I’ve tried burgers from many different joints in and around Melbourne and Rockwell and Sons is the place that keeps me wanting to come back for their burger. <br/>I’ve taken a fair few friends with me on multiple occasions and everyone agrees to it being their favourite as well!<br/>Couple that with the great selection of house made soda’s, a great decor and the incredibly nice and attentive staff and you have a stellar combo for a perfect outing with your mates

Rockwell & Sons, what a venue. The Double Smash is easily my favourite burger in Australia. Once you pick it up, you never put it down until its finished. Requiring 2 hands to eat this beast, it really is unstoppable. Who would have thought, Kraft singles is secret.
Emily Stephen
My all time fav burger joint thanks to a recommendation by a friend. We always get the same stuff. Tater tots, double smash (and that additional jalapeños). Service is amazing. Food is amazing. What more can I say. Best place to get your burger fix
Food Coma Survivor
Great burgers and American food in a chill environment. We ordered the double slam burgers- meat was pink inside and charred on the outside, absolutely delicious. The only thing is that the cheese needs to be sharper, and the sauce was too much (it made the burger wet). The mozzarella sticks were good and stringy, crispy outside. The crispy onion rings were the winner, the onion wasn't soggy and it wasn't greasy. Surprisingly, the coleslaw was one of the best I've ever had, Rockwell did a twist on the usual by adding horseradish or something spicy in it, and lightly dressing it. Everything was spot on, even the drinks- we ordered the lemonade and gin and the Pimm's cocktail. Would definitely be back again.
Melbourne Epicure
Excellent burgers here. Friend chicken burgers are also superb. They also do a fried-chicken Wednesdays but found the amount of food insufficient for the price. Which was odd. Recommend this place for their standard menu.
Lisa Giles
We came here for dinner last night with some friends, and we ordered a the mozzarella sticks to start, which were good but a bit more flavour in the dipping sauce would’ve been perfect! And then my bf and I shared a bacon smash burger and the fried chicken burger. The smash burger was delicious, super juicy and the sauce matched it perfectly! The fried chicken burger was nice, but personally I didn’t like the hot sauce as much, just had a bit too much of a citrus element to it. We shared fries and tater tots which were both nice, the mayo had a twist but I wasn’t blown away. The service was amazing though, our waiter was incredibly friendly and it really added to our dining experience here. Would come back for the burgers but I’d try other sides and starters next time!

Amazing place !! Been welcomed very warmly! We sat at the bar and the waiter was amazing !! Super nice, he took care of us, had a huge smile and an awesome and communicative energy ! <br/>We had the bacon and cheese croquettes and it was delicious. The beef burger was just amazing too! And the fries were so gooood i felt like home ! The taste was amazing, the service was amazing ! <br/>Will Definitely go back !!

Damn! Solid and consistently good in service and food. No nonsense service and straight to the point feed you quickly so they can flip a table. Awesome starters last night of ox tongue and witlof with anchovy whip. Beef burger and chicken sanga both tasty as! Ticks all boxes for this kinda quick service environment. Great beer list too.
Daniel
Have been here a few times now and has become one of our favourites.chilled out feeling inside awesome food and would recommend the double smash Burger with bacon of course !!

Everywhere I now go to have a chicken burger, I compare to the chicken burger at Rockwell’s & Sons - there’s something magical about the way the fennel & chicken work together ♥️
Massivebird
Double smash never disappoints, if they ever close I'll wish I had eaten more of them. Chicken burger bloody good too. Next time ill hit up the thick cut bacon burger.

Tl;dr <br/>Great food, great service, small starters for the price<br/><br/>Went in for a late Thursday night dinner.<br/>The place was pretty much empty but that didn't phase us! <br/>Ordered their home-made lemonade lemonade- which didn't disappoint! Not for those who love their drinks super sweet, we found it tart but refreshing! <br/><br/>For food we shared the fried eggplant, buttermilk biscuits, fried chicken sandwich and black bean burger. <br/>Everything was super delish! The one major negative was the portion sizes for the starters~<br/>The eggplant batter was crunchy and delish with the spice from the nacho sauce working amazingly with the eggplant. But for $12 we got 4 small fingers of eggplant which we demolished in record time. <br/>The buttermilk biscuits were warm and crumbly- like a buttery scone and the mouse and jelly was light and tasty but not overpowering like pates can be. Again, for $12 it was 2 quite small biscuits- they were generous with the pate but the ratio of biscuit:pate was completely off- we could've had probably 3-4 more biscuits with the amount provided.<br/><br/>Between the chicken and bean burgers, the bean burger surprisingly came out on top! The patty wasn't dry like others and between the sauce, cheese and buttery brioche, it was soooo easy to down! <br/>The burgers were reasonably priced for their size considering how easy it is to get a single $15+ these days. <br/><br/>Overall, the service was lovely, the food was tasty and the ambience was very relaxed; we were able to have a great catchup and didn't have to speak too loudly to be heard over the music. <br/>A bit more of a generous serve on the starters and it would've easily been a 4.0+ rating!

AMAZEBALLS! After going around Melbourne to find some good burgers, I have decided that the double burger smash burger is the absolute best!!!! Can't wait to go back and try other things on the menu
Wammo
Consistently the most exceptional and delicious burger (double patty smash!). My friend made the error of trying the chicken - which wasn't bad, but had to order a second burger to satiate his needs. Love the Kiwi beers on tap! Prefer the old style pork hocks, (BBQ?) rather than the current Chinese-style ones. Rockwell never fails to deliver, please keep it up!

Really enjoyed their black bean burger, it was one of the best vege burgers I've had! Their buns are amazing and the green tomatoes worked really well. Chips are also great and the service was friendly. It's located in a really cool area, I would definitely return.

Is Kraft cheese the secret recipe for a great burger? I don't think so.<br/><br/>I like Rockwell & Sons, there's this hipster, city-like feel when you walk inside, blistering crowds enjoying picturesque meals under low lights. It set the perfect scene to try their famous Double Patty Smash Burger.<br/><br/>I was overstrung by probing the menu for the fried chicken, I couldn't find it. Alas, it's only on Wednesday nights. After I put my disappointment to the side, we decided on the Crispy Confit Duck Wings. Probably the best decision of my life, that Red Dragon Sauce was divine. The duck wings were tender and didn't resist my fork and knife poking at it.<br/><br/>The two bearded chiefs worked their magic all night furiously serving dishes out at an impressive pace, but I think they put our order behind two others who ordered much later than us. I wasn't entirely impressed with that having to wait quite a long time for the Double Patty. It came in the end after asking where it was.<br/><br/>We ordered French Fries with Aioli and Mac & Cheese on the side. The Double Patty Smash Burger is nice, but there's something odd about it. I figured out it was the melted Kraft cheese that left this 'plastic' taste in my mouth. I didn't get that wow factor I was expecting when I bit into it, but the Special Sauce in this burger is wonderful! It looks a lot better than it tastes and I would recommend it as it could tickle your fancy if you don't mind Kraft cheese. The Beer and Burger Bar and Huxtaburger, make better burgers. The French Fries are a-OK, it could be the Malt Vinegar causing my issues, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually do. Mac & Cheese was fantastic, so that hit the spot.<br/><br/>The waitresses were attentive and friendly, minus the long wait for the food; I would come back again to taste the Smoked Lamb Ribs, Fried Chicken and Pressed Rib Sandwiches. Maybe go on a Wednesday night and get the fried chicken as well, decisions, decisions.
TL
Absolutely delicious! Been here on a regular night with a group so we tried most things on the menu and everything was amazing! The deep fried broccoli was surprisingly tasty.<br/>Came again on their Wednesday Fried Chicken night and again, did not disappoint! Ordered 2 chickens which came with 5 sides which was shared between 5 of us.. Although the first time we came with 3 people and ordered 2 chickens, it also came with 5 sides. <br/>Nevertheless, this place is a must-try!

We were really excited about the reviews of this place so we battled the dodgy night bus service to get here. We tried the deviled eggs and they were amazing! The burgers were good too, but my friend and I agreed that there was just something missing from the flavours.
Yourmelbournefoodguide
Amazing burgers! Definitely a good choice for a cheat day 😂😂<br/>Some of the best in the area! On brioche buns, which are rich and so delicious! Also love the potato gems. Definitely will go back!

Really enjoyed this place great burgers and sides, devilled eggs, croquettes were delicious and the lobster roll as well! Decor and atmosphere were excellent and will definitely will be coming back

I visited Rockwell and Sons after a Burger Lover I know told me that they thought the Double Patty Smash burger here was the best burger in Melbourne.<br/>We started with the corn bread, which was presented in an interesting way - in a "polenta chip" shaped stick with grilled cheese and corn on top. It was tasty, but I was there for the burger so I only had a taste of the corn bread so that I wouldn't get distracted.<br/>The burger arrive and looked juicy and meaty. The cheesy special sauce was delightful and delicious. I think I would have liked just a tiny bit of salad in the burger just to cut through the density of the burger and add some freshness. At the risk of being a complete minority.... I must admit that I didn't really enjoy the burger patties as I found it to be a bit "under" and I swear I could detect a slight "raw mince" type of taste which prevented me from rising to charred burger heaven.<br/>Although this wasn't my favourite burger, it would still make my top 10 in Melbourne. I'd come back to Rockwell and Sons to try their other dishes.
Jude D'Souza
Great place, tasty food, good service and a great setting.<br/><br/>The food is presented extremely well and looks appetizing. The menu is limited but everything is quality on there.
GET•IN•MY•BELLY
Sooooooo good!! This is the double patty smash burger that's so good yet so bad for your arteries. The deep fries chicken is sensational to. Great place to eat
Ta.be.tabi
On Wednesdays, Rockwell does a whole fried chicken which requires pre-ordering and pre-payment of $65, accompanied with sides selected by the chef. Our foodie group has been anticipating this dinner for a while due to the limited availability. We started off with Pork Crackling. which were very light with an airy crunch. It was seasoned with ancho chilli salt and served with chimchurri salsa.

On a wintery day in Melbourne this place is hard to go past. Great - albeit limited - selection of flavours. We created our own tapas with starters & nibbles. The crispy pork is a stand out & a must!!<br/><br/>This cool little place has great ambience & the service is always good. Put it on your list.
Jhart1756
Total hipster/Collingwood kids hangout however, dude food done exceptionally well. Ignore the crowd and settle in for some delicious food- just don't plan to do any dancing after.
The Gastronaut
Hands down, the BEST burger in Melbourne!<br/>The double smash patty burger is something you just cannot miss. People say a lot of things about other burger joints but they are not even close to what these guys offer.<br/>I wouldn't, however, experiment a lot here. Stick to what works best with them. The fries are ok too, but they charge extra, not as part of a deal. Still wouldn't complain. Will go back again and again!

Rockwell and Sons is a contemporary bar and restaurant in the heart of Collingwood, offering modern Australian fare influenced by American and European cuisines. The venue has a wine bar-meets-diner vibe thanks to dimmed mood lighting, clean decor and furnished wooden tables, chairs and countertops. Upbeat music rounds out a hipster feel, settling Rockwell and Sons right in in this part of town.
Lisa
Food awesome, service, friendly enough. Ambiance, seriously, I love hip hop, like totally grew up on it. But when I can't hear my boyfriend talking from across the table, it's getting pretty silly. But, back to the food- awesome!
Real_forking_diet
went to try out rockwell and sons on their fried chicken night wich takes place on Wednesdays … and also because i wanted to check out their famous double patty smash burger , wich I’ve been hearing  good things about !. conveniently located on smith street , the place has a nice vibe going with tamed lights and big wooden tables .
Theknifeandforktalk
Stumbled into this place by chance before heading into the city and was so happy we gave Rockwell and sons a go. We ordered the hush puppies due to curiosity and they were delicious. The double party smash burger which had the most amazing special sauce and the Maine-style tiger prawn roll which was also enjoyed! Tater tots were great just too spicy for my tolerance. I will definitely be coming back!
Filet De Boeuf
The Double Patty Smash Burger is simply one of, if not the best in Melbourne. I've been here on countless occasions and, despite being an adventurous person, will never order anything else from Rockwell & Sons. Simply perfect.

Oh My Wow - the Pressed Rib Burger was to die for.  Perfectly cooked and on a tasty/ slightly warmed bun... I wanted another.  A nice Mornington Pilsner on tap to wash it down with completed the experience.  Staff were friendly, very approachable & knowledgeable.

We started off with the Double Patty Smash Burger. Loaded with two, juicy and nicely charred beef patties, the burger was bursting with flavour. Combined with a nicely melted slice of Kraft cheese and their simply delectable ‘special sauce’, this quickly became one of my favourite beef burgers of all time.<br/> <br/>The burgers here were pretty much flawless. The highlight though, was undoubtedly the Double Patty Smash Burger, and I will be dreaming of that for many days to come.

We are visiting Melbourne from Perth, and were brought here by some friends.   The four of us shared different dishes, which were all delicious and interesting.   The service was brilliant and the atmosphere rustic and charming.    Highly recommended!
Cookielessvee
Great place. Lively ambience and friendly service. Went around 8.30pm and some of the dishes were already sold out so we opted for the prawn roll and for sides the broccoli and grilled corn. The filling itself is quite salty but balances with the sweet bun. Grilled corn is juicy and the seasoning is made just right. The broccoli was cold, had a unique taste and the almonds balanced it out. Try out the icecream!
Gotham
I might be in the minority but I'm undoubtedly alone when I say this place = Hipster McDonalds with a higher price tag plus five times the SALT.  Seriously.  Give me a fresh, well cooked cheeseburger with some thousand island dressing any day of the week.  I mistakenly decided to try the soft serve.  One lick and I was done - by that I mean my tongue disconnected itself from my oral cavity and went in search of a body of water in which to revive its dying self.
HungryBear
Hands down best burgers in Melbourne. Been here a few times and they never fail to impress. Whilst in comparison to other burger joints prices are slightly higher it's totally worth it.
Loves Pubs
The picture below of the Double Patty Smash Burger does this burger no justice, it is actually great. The bun is so soft and you have to look twice to make sure you're not eating a doughnut every time you have a bite, highly recommend trying one of these at least once. We also had the fried chicken, fried mozzarella, pork hocks and the smoked lamb ribs with all very tasty and highly recommended.
Luke And Hannah
So salty it hurts.<br/>Luke: Do you know why they ask people to pay in advance for fried chicken here? Probably cause people don't wanna pay after they eat it.<br/>Hannah: That's so mean Luke<br/><br/>We booked a table one week earlier and if you want the whole fried chicken you need to pay $65 in advance which is non-refundable.<br/>We arrived on time and were quickly sitted at a table in the corner. We started the feast with some devil eggs which were overall good - soft, fresh, layered and a bit tangy.<br/><br/>Next came our fried chicken and another 3 side dishes. The chicken was great in texture - the coating was super crunchy and the meat inside was moist, juicy, and tender. However - there was too much salt. It may help if you share the chicken between 3+ people but if you have to finish it with only one friend, the saltiness slowly grows in effect as you plow through the chicken till your whole tongue are numb with salt. We felt sick afterward.<br/><br/>The sidedishes were okay - the biscuit and gravy were good, the coleslaw was fresh. The pickles however were again too salty. We drank three bottles of water throughout the evening.<br/><br/>Overall, they really need to tune down the salt department here or at least add some freshness or sweetness to the chicken course - some ice cream as desserts would help a lot. We don't really know why they hype this place up as one of the best fried chicken places in Melbourne, it just doesn't add up.
Samantha Riely
The burger was outstanding! don't hold back... get the double patty and bacon with a side of tater tots! Best burger I've had all year, although one red by the glass makes the whole experience a bit underwhelming and it must have been a while since it was opened as It was pretty much on its way out, stick to beer here! Service was friendly

I'm completely aware that not eating the meat at a meat focused restaurant is a little ridiculous but hear me out. Melbourne and especially the hipster-hoods of Fitzroy and Collingwood are well known to be a favorite of vegans and vegetarians alike. If you are a venue that serves food you will definitely have a vegetarian option. Rockwell does and it's a bean burger which in fairness tastes quite good. It could have much more substance though for a whopping $13. The trick is not to just take out the meat but add something it's place. I enjoyed the burger but had to add chilli sauce to make it have more flavour. The crispy tempura style broccoli was everyone's favorite. Between six of us we ate every combination of plant and animal and for broccoli to be a highlight is a little worrying. <br/><br/>We also got tater tots and fries, both of which were straight out of a supermarket packet. The sauces were not amazing so both sides were disappointing.<br/><br/>Beer selection is great but very overpriced. Our waitress was excellent and casual as were the dimly lit vibes and 90's hiphop playing that night. I won't be racing back here with so many other exceptional places nearby and think my meat eating companions feel the same way.

DOUBLE SMASH - HANDS DOWN TURN AROUND THE BEST BURGER IN MELBOURNE. <br/><br/>I've eaten some pretty good burgers in my time and Rockwell & Sons double smash burger is like no other. This burger seriously stands the test of time. <br/><br/>It's the combination of meat to sauce ratio that hits the spot for me. The burger taste so good it doesn't need no fancy cheese - I didn't think it was possible to be in love with kraft cheese. I would describe this burger like the cool kid on your street that doesn't need to try but radiates sex appeal. <br/><br/>Do yourself a favour and eat like a billion of these burgers (responsibly).
Curlsss
Some good intention here but not a lot of flavour, or flavour that came out of a jar, and some questionable service.<br/><br/>Having been twice here, and having been to America and a lot of the American-themed restaurants around Melbourne, I have some strong views about good American food. I know it's "fusion" but putting a series of American dishes on your menu leaves it open to critique from that perspective.<br/><br/>I can't recall what I had the first time, but I remember being underwhelmed. <br/><br/>The Buffalo-style Crispy Pork Hocks seemed to be in a sauce that one could get from a jar, and I recognised it from TGI Friday's. They didn't taste like they'd been slow cooking or anything, and were...fine. I think TGI's are onto something with some Blue Cheese Dipping sauce though and if Rockwells want to stick with the sauce they should equally pair it up. Probably the better of the lot.<br/><br/>The Pressed Rib Sandwich had a bland bun. The meat, however, was fairly tasteless. It was shredded but had no smokey flavour, or any sort of kick, and lacked any strong sauce of any kind. The Fried Chicken Sandwich didn't have anything American about it really, there wasn't much crunch to the fried exterior and it could have been helped by being double-fried IMHO. Lettuce and a bun that wasn't great.<br/><br/>The fries were half there, certainly seemed to be handcut which was appreciated but little flavour and the aioli didn't help much. It all needed a good drizzle in vinegar.<br/><br/>The Crispy Broccoli was like nothing I'd ever seen and again lacked flavour. A powerful Parmesan would have given it some kick or maybe a more interesting coating before it was fried.<br/><br/>The service isn't bad, it just wasn't as organised as it should be.<br/><br/>All in all, I'd try somewhere else first before coming here.

Good place for a burger. There chips are a little too salty. The other food options are good but I always come back for the burger. If you want some comfort food here you can't go wrong.

I consider myself pretty fortunate to live pretty much next door to Rockwell & Sons, which some say does one of Melbourne’s best burgers and I tend to agree. There’s detailed analysis of the Double Smash Patty burger over at Burgers of Melbourne and I agreed the sauce and the meat were great, but disagreed that it wasn’t enough of a meal – it was for me and my fellow diner. And it’s definitely worthwhile.

As with a lot of Melbournites I'm a burger lover. Rocky is the pinnacle of this very large mountain in this city. The double party smash is the stuff dreams are made of kids. All the entrees/sides are amazing, the fries and tater tots are exceptional along with the tempura broccoli. Tried the fried pork hock cubes last visit and as with the rest of the menu it's brilliant stuff. A great drink list and vibe makes this place a winner over and over and over and over and....

Delivered by Ubereats and the food was absolute rubbish.<br/>Possibly the worst meal I've had in a long time.<br/>Spent over $100 and I wouldn't eat it again for free.

Worst service ... I never write reviews and I don't believe in them. But the service I experienced was rude , obnoxious and not welcome. Ruined my Sunday.

A place with the perfect vibe to grab good food & have some chat with your best mates! My favorite dish was the chicken sandwich & the fried, cheesy broccoli. The deviled eggs was good too!

This has to be the most uninspiring place i have ever been to .<br/>The tap beer was flat and tasteless , kids drinks were also flat .<br/>The hamburgers were greasy garbage with little taste , not to mention the horrible tasting pork thing in a roll YUK .<br/>The chips seemed half cooked in  week old oil which were so greasy .
The Pursuit Of Food Perfection
A skillfully and thoughtfully cooked menu, that plays like an all-time greatest hits album, makes Rockwell and Sons my favourite restaurant in Australia.<br/><br/>Go for the Prawn Rolls, Double Patty Smash, Fried Chicken, Coleslaw and Tater Tots.

Having dined here years ago and LOVED it, I was excited about returning this evening. My boyfriend ordered a burger and when the waiter was bringing it to our table the top of the burger fell into his lap sending sauce and bread all over his and my clothes and hands. The waiter mumbled an apology and ran off to serve other customers, leaving us shocked and covered in sticky sauce. He did not return and we had to call him over after several minutes to ask for napkins to wipe the mess off our clothes. When we went to the bar to pay, the guy taking payment was just as lacking in manners. There was no "how was your meal" or even a "hi", just "forty seven (dollars)".<br/><br/>In a city like Melbourne where restaurants come and go, service is an important part of the mix in attracting and maintaining repeat customers- no matter how good the food it (which it wasn't). Bad service repels like a bad smell and unfortunately that's what I'm taking away from this visit. I'm truly disappointed and shocked at what should have been an exciting, enjoyable meal. Where do I send my dry cleaning bill?

I've had burgers both drunk and sober from here. Excellent both times. And now it's on uber eats I'm super excited! Love the tingle of your lips after eating it from the spice.

I had high hopes coming to Rockwell & Sons on Sunday night. Having been a few times before and thinking that the chicken burger was the best ever, I was excited.<br/>Unfortunately, it really fell short for me tonight. The devilled eggs and coleslaw were as great as usual but the broccoli was quite soggy and the chicken burger was drowned in a really lemony sauce and so it was just way too acidic and overpowering. <br/>Hopefully it was just a one off as usually, I would say Rockwell is great.

Rockwell and Sons still does a great Melbourne Fried Chicken. With 2 days of pre-cooking (brining and dredging) and all the amazing sides, it is still a hit that we want more and more of. Had the double smash pattie burger and shared the hand cut fries and tempura broccoli. Everything was pretty delicious. The burger literally melted in your mouth like baby food but in a good way. Soft brioche thin patties cheese and amazing sauce. I was craving some greenery after though. Slowly making my way through a lot of burgers in Melbourne, this one is probably in my top 5...

I've had the smash burger several times and the bacon is always over cooked and burnt. We gave it three try's but the bacon has been the same every time, I guess this is what they want to serve. I rather not eat burnt bacon, so although this is the only downfall, it's enough to not eat it again. It's unfortunate because other than the bacon, the burger is good.

The problem with self-love as we currently understand it is in our view of love itself, defined, too simply and too often, as an extraordinary feeling that we respond to with hearts and flowers and fantasy, ritual consumption and affectless passion. Modernity would have us mooning after ourselves like heartsick, slightly creepy teenagers, taking selfies and telling ourselves how special and perfect we are. This is not real self-love. Eating a double patty smash burger with a serve of tater tots and an ice cold beer alone is real self-love. <br/><br/>10/10 Would definitely dine again
Tom
Not bad. Great bun.. Crispy chicken. Unfortunately the sauce came short. It tastes just like any sriracha mayo. Would've scored a lot higher if they up their sauce game. But still. Not bad

Now that Friday's upon us, a burger's more than fitting to start the weekend.<br/>For top ranking burgers in Collingwood, Huxtaburger and Rockwell & Sons are the clear winners.<br/>With the Double Patty Smash as the headliner, winning many fans over the last few years.<br/>It's quite a bewildering burger, getting pretty messy with each bite. The special sauce being the crux of the mess, seems to be made up of mayonnaise, pickles and various indistinguishable spices. Very well put together and satisfying to put away.<br/>I'll definitely be back with a party to tick off more of menu.

Had a dinner for two here on a Wednesday so it was buzzing but not overcrowded.  It's a shame that a place which had so much promise on walking in, ended up being no better than average.  <br/><br/>The defining factor is that unfortunately wait & bar staff who show almost zero enthusiasm or passion for a place will inevitably draw even the most excited diner down to their level.   Without them this would easily be a 5 star rating as the atmosphere, drinks list, menu and ultimately the food itself all stack up excellently for any comparable place to eat.  <br/><br/>We tried the chicken and beef burgers, both fantastic and a couple of starters including the fried mozzarella which was a standout.  The kitchen sure as hell has their side of things covered and then some.<br/><br/>I have never expected fawning service and don't expect anything more than good attentive and friendly service and I only say that to give context to my review: some expect a lot more and some less.  That we never once were smiled at, talked to or had a proactive drink fill offered and watched waiters move to and fro with zero interaction with their tables meant we simply ate our fill and left on a night that had seemed far more likely to go long when we'd first opened their door.<br/><br/>I'll go back, as the food deserves a second chance, but with so many others doing as well and with real spark, it will need to be markedly better for me to become a regular.

There are a couple of reasons why you wouldn't go here- 1. You don't like chicken 2. You have no friends. That's it, no other reason. You should go there immediately if you're not in those categories. 6 fellas went to the Wednesday night fried chicken night and we loved it. Ordered 3 chickens between us with a couple of sides and we were over the moon with it. The chicken had a wonderful crunch and flavour to the batter. The sides were filling and lovely and a perfect accompaniment to the main meal. On a Wednesday you have to pre-order and pay but it is really lovely.<br/><br/>Get there

The wonderful interior is what drew me in initially. The food is extremely bland. I ordered the classic burger they had without bacon. The bun itself is too airy and soft it does a poor job holding together. The meat seems as though it hasn't been seasoned and there was no lettuce or tomato or anything to get rid of the overall grease taste. I also ordered the Tator tots and crispy broccoli. The tots were fine, overpriced but fine. The broccoli was cooked wonderfully at the stems but towards the top the batter had cakes together and not been fully cooked. Would not recommend or come back.

One of the most overrated places on smith st. Had some burgers and sandwiches + some drinks. Food was just alright, with okay price. I think this place is all about location

Been here quite a few times but mainly for the fried chicken on Wednesday nights. A few years ago, we managed to do the fried chicken without booking but you need to book weeks in advance now. Fried chicken and the sides is great but not a fan of much else.

Just got the normal smash burger with bacon, but regretted the bacon for the first time in my life as it was literally overburnt as hell...<br/><br/>burger was amazing though!
Marianaguzmanflores
Best burger in Melbourne, really worth visiting. The fried mozarella sticks are delicious and worth ordering as well. I really recommend the place.
Chips&Sauce
Nothing that annoys me more is when you pay $20 plus for a burger and still left hungry. At $12 the double patty burger is not only a brilliant burger it was a good size.

Stopped in for lunch today.<br/>Ordered the Fried Chicken sandwich with buttermilk dressing, iceberg, and hot sauce.<br/>The chicken was fantastically moist, got a little soggy on walk back to my place. Bet if I had eaten it straight away, it would have more crunch. So I can't complain on that. Flavor was outstanding; buttermilk & hot sauce is a classic southern combination. Bun was nice, hot, and soft.<br/><br/>I usually don't eat tots, but these are seasoned with a Japanese 7 spice called Togarashi, I use it in a couple of my sauces & rubs back home. Blended with the kombu mayo, there were fantastic. Nice n crispy, with kick of flavor.<br/><br/>Can't wait to try some more.<br/>Friendly Staff & quick service.

I have been here many times now and I will continue to come back here! The food is so tasty and leaves you feeling all warm inside :) Place also has a cool feel to it :)

Love this place. Although it isnt the healthiest place to go all the time, there is great food and beer on the menu. Highly recommend the smash burger, deep fried broccoli (this one is amazing) and lamb ribs. Also tried the hillbilly burger recently and although it was good, I still prefer the combination of the original smash.

Introduced to this restaurant by a friend. Great service and laid back atmosphere. Get the double party smash. Best burger in Melbourne. Always greeted warmly by Manu and the crew here.

Have been wanting to try this place for a while now, Ordered the smoked lamb ribs and double patty smash burger with bacon, both were spot on! Lamb ribs were crispy on the outside and tender inside, the burger was just everything you need from a burger, crispy bacon with juicy patties and melted cheese with beautiful soft bun. Will come back again!

So I'd been waiting for an opportunity to drive all the way to Collingwood to try their famed Southern-style fried chicken. They only offer the chicken on Wednesdays, so this being a weekend, I settled for the fried chicken burger. J had the standard beef burger. The kids shared a fried chicken burger and tater tots. On the strength of a foodie blog, I decided to sample the crispy chicken skin for an appetizer. <br/>Alright. I may have had heightened expectations due to the generally good reviews and the number of "best fried chicken" lists Rockwell has been included in. <br/><br/>However...I hesitate in showering them with more praise. I did not enjoy the greasy chicken skin topped with melted cheese (I have consumed my share of fried chicken skin and other "nether" parts, due to my Malaysian upbringing). The chicken burger was similarly greasy and left me feeling bloated and very guilty for the indulgence. <br/><br/>J liked his burger enough from his Midwestern perspective. He rated it 5th from the burger joints he's been to in Australia. The patty and cheese was best, bun was subpar. We all agreed that the fries were too dry and crispy, not to our taste. <br/><br/>Sorry, Rockwell. A little too underwhelming to make the drive back again. Plus, parking in Collingwood is always horrendous. <br/>

One of the best burgers ever.. Brioche bun... Finally chopped pickles and onions.. Double patty smash burger just so juicy and perfect ..with all that melted cheese
MR
A $15 serve of lamb ribs came with 4 ribs. The Kentucky Black BBQ Sauce was just a watery juice, but perhaps that was just run-off from the meat. There was no sticky or rich sauce on the ribs. Hushpuppies were served with (not very) maple butter, they were heavy and overcooked. Maybe a spicier/lighter sauce would go better? My friend had the Double Patty Smash Burger and said it was nice, but $4 was a bit much to pay for a few strands of deep fried bacon.<br/><br/>The staff were vague, unsmiling and uninterested. Had to ask to have table cleaned from last people and we had to get our own menus. It was half full Sat afternoon and it took half an hour to get our food. The toilet doesn't have toilet roll holder, so the paper was on the floor. Ew. Would not recommend unfortunately.

Rock and roll. Wednesday is fried chicken night at Rockwell & Sons. I found myself there somewhat reluctantly, at the request of an interstate friend who was in town briefly and longed to recreate his American holiday. Whilst l wouldn't want to eat R&S fried chicken every night, l was impressed by just how good it was. <br/><br/>Taking the advice of the staff, we ordered just one chicken between us, despite my friend's passion for pan-fried poultry. It came out hot and golden brown, juicy inside and well seasoned outside. I tried cutlery for a while but there really is no better alternative to eating this than with your hands. Finger-licking and all! <br/><br/>This southern style sensation comes with a variety of sides - on our night it was the devilled eggs, pickles, slaw, and buttermilk biscuits and gravy. I was a bit disappointed to miss the various potato dishes - although l could have ordered these separately if l really wanted more fried food & carbohydrates. And if l could've fit them in - which l couldn't. <br/><br/>What l did want was my egg with a bit more fire and devilish spice amidst the lusciously smooth and rich filing. The pickles were the right mix of salty and crunchy, and the slaw fresh and lightly combined with a gently tangy dressing. <br/><br/>Having visited both Tennessee and Louisiana last year, l have eaten plenty of 'biscuits' and gravy - think of these as scones with savoury white sauce. The texture of the R&S ones was fantastic, and the sauce creamy and perfectly proportioned to the biscuits, but with a slightly dissonant flavour l couldn't place. <br/><br/>Service was laconic, and initial attention slow noting that we did arrive early. The place certainly filled up as the night rolled on, and service picked up too. The burgers being brought out regularly looked pretty good. <br/><br/>I didn't pay but am told that for all our hunka hunka food, the bill was only $60 before tip. Yes, we stuck to water, but that's still not a lot of money for lots of delicious dinner. We rolled out into the street happy and very full. <br/><br/>There sure are a lot of burger & fried chicken places now, but R&S gets my vote for a little bit of Dixie land chicken in Collingwood.
The Frugal Cats
This place has been on our bucket list for while now and we really looking forward to trying as much as we could from the menu! We got the lamb ribs to share and they were definitely the star dish of the night! We also got the chicken sandwich and the prawn roll. Unfortunately none of these two hit the spot, they were both overseasoned and really vinegary. The tater tots were nice but slightly salty. We got the housemade lemonade and the ginger and apple lemonade, both of which were quite average. Despite everything, customer service was really prompt and efficient and we shall be back to try more items from the menu :3

We ordered the tiger prawn roll and fried broccoli. The bread roll was soft and sweet and the prawns were succulent. My gripe was that the sauce was rather sharp that didn't quite complement with the prawns and bread roll. At $12, portion size was small. The fried broccoli was surprisingly the dish that ended our dinner well! We loved the fried broccoli and felt that everything was good about it.

Have been here a couple of times and is always a solid choice. Wait staff are attentive without being overbearing, and the whole vibe is pretty chill. That aside, the double patty smash is reason enough to come, being my fave burger in Melbourne, let alone Collingwood. Really decent value for money too!
Princess_Porky
This was an impromptu plan B lunch but such an awesome find. Had a fantastic meal here with each dish being a hit. The burger was delicious. Cooked medium with a tasty sauce. The prawn roll was the highlight. Slightly on the small side but fair for the price and filled with meaty tiger prawns. And not too mayo-y either. And we went with tater tots instead of the usual fried. Brilliant. Everything was really tasty.
My Babes And I
My babes and I celebrated our monthaversary a few Wednesday's ago. I wanted to go somewhere special so a week earlier I booked in a chicken dinner at a restaurant I always wanted to take her to; Rockwell & Sons on Smith Street in Collingwood.<br/>I've been to Rockwell & Sons a few times with my mates (full disclosure: I've ridden a push bike with the North Carolinian head chef a couple of times) and usually we'd have a post-ride Double Patty Smash Burger or the Pressed Pork Rib Sandwich. I absolutely loved everything I've had there previously so I couldn't wait to try their famous Southern Fried Chicken with my babes.<br/>Although I made the booking for 6:30, my babes and I got there half an hour early and were seated by 6:10. During the online booking service, you choose whether you want the Wednesday night only chicken dinner or a regular dinner from their a la carte menu. The benefits are that your whole chicken dinner, including sides, are pre cooked and just need to be plated when you arrive, cutting the waiting time down significantly. The only thing we had to order was our drinks so I got Temple Brewing's Bicycle Beer and my babes got the Homemade Lemonade. <br/>Five minutes after being seated, we were served with our starter dish of Devilled Eggs and our drinks. The soft boiled egg, with its yolk scrambled with mayonnaise and mustard topped with chives, was a delectable starter and it got our appetite going. The only downside was that we both wished we had a couple more! I've had the Bicycle Beer before and I knew it would go perfectly with the fried chicken. My babes was disappointed in her lemonade, as she mentioned it wasn't as sweet as she expected it to be, but I really enjoyed it and would get next time.<br/>A few minutes later, we were served our side dishes of Biscuits and Gravy, Pickled Vegetables and Carolina-Style Coleslaw and our main dish; eight pieces of golden Southern Fried Chicken goodness!<br/>The star of the meal had to be the Southern Fried Chicken and I was extremely happy that it outshone every other dish. I was surprised that every piece of chicken, from the drumstick to the usually infamously dry breast, was unbelievably succulent and cooked to perfection. The spice combination in the coating was amazing and brought out the best flavours in the poultry. I would imagine it was what KFC used to taste like when the Colonel first made it in Kentucky all those years ago. Easily the best Southern-style Fried Chicken I've ever tasted in Melbourne! <br/>The last time I had American-style "biscuits" was in New York two years ago and these ones brought me back there! The flakey buttermilk biscuits were covered in a flavourful gravy that complimented the chicken perfectly. My babes, having never had these type of biscuits before, didn't enjoy it as she couldn't separate it from the sweet biscuits we're accustomed to in Australia.<br/>The Pickled Vegetables, which included string beans, white radish and beetroot, were a nice touch but I could've done without them.<br/>But the homemade Carolina-Style Coleslaw was a total surprise to me! I usually enjoy mayonnaise-based coleslaw but the Carolina-Style Coleslaw, comprising of finely sliced cabbage, carrot and topped with chives, seemed to have a vinegar based dressing which had the perfect level of acidity to enhance the flavourful herbs and spices within the fried chicken. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to have it again!<br/>One whole fried chicken didn't sound like a lot to me when I initially booked our chicken dinner but, once you include the sides, it definitely suits two to three diners. We couldn't finish our dinner so I was able to take a couple of chicken pieces away and had it for lunch at work the next day. I couldn't recommend Rockwell & Sons Wednesday night chicken dinner any highly for all fried chicken lovers in Melbourne!

This place has been on my list from the beginning and has a bit of curiosity factor about it. Consistently highly rated amongst those in the know, it didn’t disappoint. In the eating phase there was nothing to fault about this burger. Creamy sauce, delicious meat, perfect bun and cheesy cheese. Not much wrong with that. Unfortunately, the curiosity of this burger was it’s only let down. After eating, the taste of the Kraft singles cheese (the curiosity) is all that lingers, and lingers. Thank god for beer – oh yeah, great beer here…

What can I say, Bang! We're coming back. I want that chicken at the very least. Best burger I've had for a while and no BS or Pretence too.

Category: Casual Fried Chicken<br/>Price range: $20 per head<br/>Score: 72/100<br/><br/>For fried chicken Wednesday!<br/>Went there after work with a couple of friends for some good fried chicken. Had heard of their buttermilk brine marinating process and was very eager to try.<br/>The chicken was very tasty, but perhaps due to the brine it was quite salty leading to me drinking water all night afterwards.<br/>Their other dishes on the night, including deviled eggs and fried cheese really hit the mark.<br/>I want to try their normal menu next time to make a more accurate rating of this restaurant.

Overview: Cool hang-out for a burger fix if you are in Brunswick area or thereabouts on Smith Street. Reviews seem to be more about the chicken wings (Wednesday only) but sadly they were not available when we went as it was a Friday. Lighting leans towards the dark side, with some places being a bit brighter. Place probably sits approx 30-40 people and booking needs to be made online. Booked a table for 7 people but we had to wait for 10-15 mins before being seated. That was understandable since I booked for 6 ppl with one extra person who may be was/wasn't coming. Staff handled the situation very well while we chose to wait outside chatting and overall great service too. <br/><br/>Food: Entrees consisted of lamb ribs, chicken skin, fried brocoli, tater tots and fries. Lamb ribs and chicken skin was (way) too salty to my liking but tasted a lot better with beer as one would expect with these types of food. The highlights here were the broccoli and tater tots, both crispy and tasty. Fries can be shared among 2 people, although not overly generous but just. Most of us had the Double patty smash. For us who were expecting something new and tasty, it was quite disappointing, but even if we were to lower our expectations on this occasion, I am afraid the burger was still not as satisfying, and I place it below the likes of Grill'd, Andrews Burger and Beatbox Burger.<br/><br/>Conclusions: Don't get me wrong. Great joint and great atmosphere - perfect for those who want to enjoy some drinks and a decent burger but do not come here with great expectations if you are after something new and different. As another fellow reviewer put it: "Yawn! Another burger joint". Having said that, we are more than happy to go back to try the chicken wings and give it another crack.
Finger Lickin
Been wanting to check this place out for a while. It didn't disappoint. The burgers were on point. The bun was crispy tasty and full of flavour. The home made sauce is a must try. The double smash is the way to go. I ordered it with bacon but ended up taking it out. The bacon is cold and very salty. Also tried the hope made coleslaw which was fresh and had a nice tang to it. Only problem is the waiters were a bit rude but it was late so they may have been tired.
