Review The Fox Hotel - Collingwood

S C
The best thing I can say about this place is that it feels like home; warm, welcoming, cozy & friendly. Came here on a Tuesday night for $20 steaks and I was very satisfied; the T-bone steak is more on the thin side, but we’ll balanced with the delicious mushroom sauce. Excellent beers on offer, they have their own Fox lager on tap which I highly recommend. Love the decorations!

Sunday roast special was very special. Generous portion and delicious. Friendly and attentive service. Fantastic choice of music with a good selection of the Stones mixed in.

Fox Hotel combines the traditional Aussie pub with awesome fittings and ambience with a distinctively Collingwood vibe. Staff were friendly and engaging. Great range of beers on tap and the steak sandwich was delicious with good options for vegetarians and vegans. Highly recommended.

A little hidden gem!!!! Amazing selection of beer, staff were so friendly Clean and tidy place and bar staff seen cleaning between customers I had the steak sandwich, HUGE portion I struggled to finish, excellent value for money, steak cooked to perfection Our table also at the chicken schnitzel and special fish, no one was disappointed We also had a coeliac with us and there was a options both food and alcoholic beverages for them The car park is opposite side of the road to the pub, you can see it but you have to find the hidden alley to find the entrance but there was plenty of space

This is exactly the sort of pub that makes inner-city Melbourne such a great place. This city is blessed to have so many of these types of pubs in suburbs such as Collingwood, Abbotsford, FItzroy, North Melbourne, Brunswick, and so on. The Fox is one of the best. It's relatively small, but uses every inch of its space well, including private rooms and a great rooftop. The food is fantastic (huge serves of hearty pub classics, all well prepared), the staff are helpful and friendly, and there is a great range of beer on tap and in bottles. The place just has a warm, welcoming vibe from the moment you walk in the door. It's the sort of pub that you would visit everyday if you lived nearby. These are the sorts of pubs that we have to fight to retain because they are an essential part of this great city's heart and soul. Long live The Fox!

Great staff great place excellent menu huge selection of beers

Great food, informal atmosphere and reasonable prices. A great combination.

Nice local pub. Staff super friendly. Meal was good. Had the parma and the Philly cheese steak. Parma was an 8/10. Large portion with nice amount of cheese and smoky ham. Points only deducted as it was a bit burnt on the bottom. The kids loved the cheese steak!

Fantastic local bar with superb staff. I fully recommend the vegan pulled tempeh roll and my mate can vouch for the chicken burrito- Another fine eve at the Fox!

Absolutely delicious. I'm not vegetarian but could easily be if I could make the vego food on offer at The Fox. I highly recommend you visit as all the dishes at our table were amazing. A great meat, seafood and vegan assortment to choose from.

Great food (that happens to be vegetarian and vegan), amazing beer, fantastic atmosphere. They host great events too, like a beer week one on Sunday I'm defo going to.

The 10th birthday was a great night. I was just going for the 1 DJ, ( Lady Soul) but stayed on til closing. Staff were friendly and did a great job under pressure. So much fun. Good mix of music from Sean, second DJ, so the floor got cleared and many danced and hula hooped! The Morton bay bug pie was scrumptious too. :)

This is my all time favourite pub, have been coming here for years and have never had a bad meal and the service is always excellent. Had my 50th here on Saturday and the platters were amazing. When I was organising the food they wouldn't let me order too much as they said the sizes were generous and they were not wrong. They could have got a lot more money out of me but instead gave me the option of ordering more on the night if more was needed, which wasn't the case. Cannot thank everyone enough for making this one of the best nights I've had. Thanks again Anne-Marie

Ten of us dine here once a fortnight and, without fail we all love or meals. We love the management and we love the staff.

This pub beats all others for fabulous inexpensive food, great service and staff. It has a real English village pub feel right in the heart of the city. I also love the feel of the upstairs beer garden overlooking the Melbourne skyline. It's at the top of my list.

I've been frequenting the Fox for the last year and a half (Mainly for their monthly Monday Trivia) and have enjoyed most of their menu from 300g Porterhouse steaks, Chip and Gravy, an Amazing Parma but hands down the best dish on the Menu is the Foxy fish Plate, overflowing with Mussels,King Prawns, Salt n pepper squid and beer battered barramundi with a generous served of their steakhouse chips and dipping sauces on the side with a Salad.

Makes my decision easy every first Monday of the month picking this monster serve to feed the equally monstrous appetite.

Food: classic pub fare with a great selection of vegetarian/vegan items. The pulled tempeh roll is the pick of the dishes. They appear to rotate the beers on tap which keeps things interesting. The vegan brownie is superb, rich and one of the best I’ve had: 3.5/5

Price: the food is slightly overpriced and the portion sizes appear to be getting smaller. The vegetarian mains are at the upper end of what you’d expect to pay for pub food in the area: 2/5

Staff: usually casual and friendly: 4/5

Ambience: unique ambience, from the cosy back restaurant to the air filled upstairs patio: 4/5

Went here on steak night. Ordered medium rare, but the steak came out medium well. That being said the steak was still tasty and chips were cooked perfectly. The place feels like a proper pub and has lots of character.
Samantics
Great little pub for a mid week meal. Offers 100 bottled beers and other non beer thirst quenchers. Friendly staff behind the bar and good ambience. Food was good with lots of choice, we loved the calamari. Will definitely be back!

Great food, great people and great atmosphere! Love the music there has been good Everytime. Get the burrito and the vegan burger! Always keen on going back....
The City Lane
The Fox Hotel appears from the outside to be an old school Collingwood pub, but it has a decidedly modern ethos to the way it operates. There are several rooms in which to enjoy a drink or a meal (including a small, dog-friendly outdoor courtyard), and live music most nights.

Another great dinner here last night. This place has such a fabulous vibe. Friendly staff, amazing beers and ciders and awesome food. This time our group had the Morton bay bug pie (yummo), satay tofu balls, eggplant stack and the seafood plate. Generous portions, amazing ingredients and delicious flavours. The chef has just got it going on. Best vegetarian menu we've seen anywhere.

I've been going to this pub since it opened in 2007. Can't fault it. The constant consistency of friendly service, great food and a killer roof top beer garden with one of my favourite views of the city.
Keep doing what you're doing, love your work :)

Made my way to the Fox last night with a group of friends. Loved the décor and the atmosphere – felt warm and inviting. Ordered the $15 steak - It was okay but I wouldn’t order it again. I asked for veg and was told it only comes with chips and salad. So I ordered veg as a side dish. $6 for a bowl of some steamed broccoli and beans was a bit rich.. I asked if I could get mushroom gravy instead and the reg gravy the steak comes with and that was also an extra $3 to throw a mushie or two in what appeared to be the exact same gravy..thought that was a bit steep. So my $15 steak turned into a $24 steak and it still wasn’t overly enjoyable. Lady behind the bar was a little rude and rushes us through orders..We had a group of 10 people who all got up to order at separate times, passing on the table number to the next person as needed, but the lady behind the bar then got all flustered (I think she wanted to put all the order on the same docket?) and asked us all to skip the cue. She was a little rude about it - "I don't know who your friends are!". Even though we had a table number we were sharing around. I felt bad for the people in line who had us hustled in front of them but luckily they were nice people and didn't seem to mind. On a positive note - My friend ordered the Grilled Eggplant Medallions – they looked and tasted AMAZING!! I will be back just to have this dish to myself, it really was great. Lots of veg options which was nice to see and even a vegan option which one of my pals was stoked about.

Quirky little pub with lots to look at and board games to play while you wait for your food. Tried it on Tuesday night $15 steak. Salad was very similar to a packet mix you get from the supermarket with no dressing very bland. Only one choice of sauce available with the steak (gravy) wouldn't cost much more to make a different couple of sauces. The food did come out relatively quickly and good verity of craft beers on tap. Service was a shocking from the lady behind the bar who seemed to be the manager god forbid that you asked a question. Very pressured and rushed to order Seems if you're not a local hipster or a regular you're not very welcome.👎

Tonight was our second meal at the Fox Hotel. We had the gyoza for entrée as well as the calamari and Spring roles. Delicious! Main course was the chicken burrito & chicken Parma (again 10/10). What brings this place undone is the people behind the bar. We had only the best customer service first time around (which we were so thankful for and why we came back a second time).
Sadly Tonight was disgusting service, a girl behind the bar with a blond Mohawk gave a grunt as a "hello" and gave off short and snappy responses to our drink orders. As we watched her making the drinks and going about her business we noticed she was agitated, eyes darting all over the room, unable to keep eye contact and doing this weird jaw movement over and over again. This bartender looked to be under the influence of drugs. We noticed her strange behaviour all night, it also was noticeable to the table sitting next to us. So sadly, although the food is amazing, the service really ruins The Fox's ratings.

The food was amazing, the seafood especially! Odd mix but delicious menu choices. Awesome ambiance. A fantastic night with great food and fun vibe.

This place has a bit of an eclectic fit out - from half mannequin legs, a large grandma mouse toy and a buffalo head on the walls to a disco ball and odd artwork. But it also has an open fire plus added heating by way of a split system and its toasty and warm. The staff are helpful and it has a laid back vibe. We came for the Parma and Pot night on a Monday and there were still plenty of people here so it's obviously a good pub enjoyed by many. My Parma was booked to perfection with grilled and sizzling cheese melted on top (not the just warmed type you get at other places). The chips were good and plentiful and the salad was decent. Not just the token greens on the side with over the top tasting dressing but one that I actually ate and enjoyed. Would definitely come here again.

Got the lunch special ($15 main with a drink). At first I was like "what's a pulled tempeh roll?" but now I'm a convert. Previously I'd only eaten something like tempeh in the context of Chinese religious fasting, but now I know what a modern ingredient it can be. This place in general is great for vegetarians and nostalgic board games.

I was drawn here for the lentil cottage pie but intend on returning to work my way through the entire extensive vegetarian (and vegan on request) menu and I expect a similarly high standard of pub food done really, really well for a realistic price. And games. Games, games, games. Slightly grimey games missing lots of pieces and pulling down your self esteem when you can't follow the 'age 8 and up' rules. Somehow i think i still won all but snakes and ladders.
(Update: they not longer serve the pie, FYI)

I was suggested this pub because we had a vegan diner in our group and there was a wide variety of vegetarian food (8 mains and 2 burgers plus entrees) and they could make any of those options vegan. She was very pleased! Everyone else also enjoyed their food - I had excellent kangaroo and a friend ordered a rare steak that was actually rare so he was pretty happy. Would definitely go back.

I love this place. The girls that run it are absolute champs! The chicken parma is so consistently good I have that predicament where I never try any of the other delicious options on the menu of which there are many (I steal off my friends plates). Plenty of options for vegetarians and always a few good guest beer taps. When I wasn't drinking booze a couple of years back the Fox was one of the few pubs which I could order an Alcohol free beer........they may even have two??. Last time we ate there my pops ordered the wrong meal by accident and they handled it like absolute pros. It's a stellar pub and I highly recommend it.
April
The food was surprisingly good for a pub. There was a good range of beers and a nice atmosphere, looking forward to my next visit. Worth a trip if you in the mood for some good pub food.

Not even here to rate the food or anything, can't see the point in going back to a place when the staff is rude. Some red headed girl with glasses decided she would be rude and ignore me for a while as I stood at the bar waiting to order. Then got snappy at me when I tried to get her attention. Is it that hard to put up a happy front even on an off day? Regardless will not be going back or recommending to anyone.
Gemma
such slow service for a Sunday roast.
serving of roast was minuscule. waited 45mins for 2 small slices of beef, 6peas, 3green beans and a tiny portion of what was supposed to be cauliflower cheese. disappointed.

This week's adventure led us to The Fox Hotel in Collingwood, which was a bit of a last minute decision but we'd heard good things about this bird. So with absolutely zero fox given we headed down to see what all the fuss was about.
We ordered, sat in the awesome rooftop deck and after 15 minutes the birds arrived. These parmas were huge and looked amazing on our plates.
The cheese was nicely melted and there was plenty of napoli both of which were tasty enough but average. The chicken was reasonably tasty although it was slightly dry and did have quite a strange dark colour to it and the crumbing was very salty. This gave us a strong indication of pre-crumbing and a few of us did feel quite sick after eating the parma.

Sides were average too - salad was a nice crunchy mix of carrot, capsicum, lettuce and coleslaw but lacked dressing. Chips were your average pub style, which is too boring for us these days.
Overall the Fox parma wasn't among the best for us, but at $22 this parma has value for money and is okay if you're looking for a standard pub parma in the area.

6/10
Too Much Cake
A good example of how a pub keeps up with modern times but doesn't lose its soul. Been a number of times and it's a lovely cozy pub. Pork belly is as good as any restaurant you will visit.

Great beers, great food, great vibe, friendly staff. I had the kangaroo which was quite good, other options on the menu looked amazing so will definitely be back to try these out.

The Fox Hotel is super dog friendly, we had the choice of sitting outside on the lower or upper deck sections. The menu has a fantastic range of vegetarian choices as well as options for your meat eating companions. The Tempeh Pulled Roll was delicious with a tasty coleslaw and side of chips. The Smoked Beef Burger was standard pub fair. Really great selection of brewery beers on tap and a tasty cider. Friendly staff and quick service. We will return with our little dog very soon!
Theknifeandforktalk
Ordered the steak with mash and salad. The order took a lot longer than expected but once it arrived I was not disappointed. It was cooked to a beautiful medium with silky mash and crunchy salad.

We had our birthday dinner here last weekend and it was great, the staff were super accommodating and the food was great. Only downside was really that music later on - bad 70s! I guess everyone has their taste in what's good :)

Last night we had the mushroom and tofu gyozas, pork belly and bug and prawn pie. All great. I decided to treat myself to a dessert, and I went for the warmed choc mud cake....well how anti climactic compared to the rest of the meals. I am 99% sure it was a supermarket cake warmed up. It still had the paper thing on the outside. Paying $8 for a slice of supermarket cake when i couldve bought a whole one for half the price on the way home.....pretty disgusted.

Really enjoy dining at The Fox. Heaps of vegetarian and vegan options which, in my experience, have been delish! Favourite is definitely the pulled tempeh roll. Yummy Vietnamese flavours and perfectly cooked tempeh. Order at the bar, which can get busy, and food can be slow in coming out but overall, pretty great!
Jenni Norris
Very cosy pub with amusing and idiosyncratic décor and very good service. We had vegetarian meals. I had the vege burger which unfortunately was quite soggy and not firm enough to be considered a proper burger patty in my humble opinion. Fries were good. My partner had the eggplant and haloumi salad. He commented that the eggplant was tough. I had a bread and butter pudding for dessert which was supposed to be soused with some kind of alcohol, can't remember which, but anyway there was no alcohol flavour and the whole thing was cold! Gutted. My partners chocolate pudding was delicious however. Overall it was a nice meal but the details really need to be right when it comes to vegetarian food and puddings!

After a botched public transport excursion (my bad) led to a forced dinner march, our duo arrived at the Fox 1h late but our table for two was still waiting. Comfortable dining area off the bar with a quirky assortment of decor. Menu reads very well and has shock, horror quite a few and shock, horror again decent vegetarian options. The vegetarian of our party so often finds good places pay only lip service to our ilk. So anyways, 16-17/20 for the Fox this time around: mushroom and tofu ghoyzas for starter were nice (rice paper veg rolls looked tempting on an adjacent table). Plant eater had a veg burrito and salad, both very good and tasty. Meat eater had porterhouse steak with green beans, potatoes, creamed cauliflower and pork croquettes - the last being something that could have been left off. This was rated good-vgood (the meat was a bit overdone apparently). Plenty of other meals worth exploring on the menu so we regret we were only a twosome. Trip back to city worked according to plan mercifully, albiet for the talkative chef we encountered (no relation to the Fox). All up, well worth your while to go, particularly if you are a vegetarian.
Abbey Sultan
I had one of the vegetarian dishes. It had fried eggplant and haulomi. I was a bit skeptical because it had so many ingredients and sometimes places just throw in everything to make it sound fancy and appealing and then charge heaps for it but I thought it was absolutely incredible and a really well balanced dish. I would have gotten a 5 but the portion size was ridiculously small! Don't go here if you're hungry.
Gez
Great service and great atmosphere. Went for lunch on a wet cold Melbourne Saturday and stayed for the afternoon. Try the bug and prawn gyoza! Better still have the mulled cider and sit by the fire. Will be back soon!
Kelly Belly
Fun and friendly. Food can be a little hit and miss sometimes. Decent parma, but not one I lust after. Disappointing given it comes with bacon, and not one but two cheeses. Have enjoyed their fish plate and burrito. Menu has many vego options, which is nice for well, vegos and anyone who can resist meatier choices.
EatingOut
Food is yummy, our kids love it! Something for everyone. Especially if you are special needs gluten/fructose/vegans etc
Jules1
Unsuspecting. Your menu and food is most tasty. Never had a bad meal here - the hamburgers and vego options are delish and quickly served for that late work night dinner or pre-gig booking. Thanks for the great beer list as well.
I Spy Plum Pie
The Fox Hotel is on Wellington Street in Collingwood and is a great little local pub with a cosy dining room as well as a roof deck which is especially great in summer. They have a big range of drinks, and their food menu is extensive – providing both your general pub fare as well as some more modern dishes. The vibe is laid back and it’s usually pretty busy – so much so it often pays to book a table on weekends! On to the food! They have a separate vegetarian menu and also usually have at least one vegetarian special, so there’s never a shortage of choice. In fact, I usually end up feeling overwhelmed by all the options! Luckily B is generally happy to share his food with me as well, so we get to try twice as many d
TheHappiestHour
Add an excellent craft beer list, great hearty food and a beer garden that's in my top 5 in Melbourne and you can't go wrong. I always seem to play pool really well here also, and I'm crap at pool.
Hide And Seek
There are cosy indoor pockets with fireplaces, where the walls are painted a warm, glowing red, and a spacious backyard strewn with road signs and fairy lights. Bar-side, there’s a big list of Australian micro-brewed beer matched by an equally long list of imports.
Hold The Peas
With a wooden bar, exposed brick walls and high tables, the Fox is old school, in a good way, but also funky. There are artefacts everywhere and it is one of those places where everyone is welcome and made to feel comfortable. KB2 and I arrived within minutes of each other and settled into the front bar for a drink and a chat while waiting for KB1. We then moved into one of the dining areas for a bite to eat. The menu at the Fox is fantastic, so many options, including a great range of vegetarian dishes. Ordering is done at the bar, and can I say, the girls behind the bar are so lovely, down to earth and genuinely friendly. We kicked things off
Pram Sandwich
The Fox made their burger sound very fancy pancy and ‘gastro’ pub esk with beetroot relish, spinach, chutney etc. However, as I eagerly bit in I was disappointed despite my ferocious hunger. The patty was huge (too big to balance the other ingredients) and the meat was poorly seasoned. The salad was scarce and the bun was stale. All in all I wish we’d chosen a local Fish n Chip shop as they probably could have done a better burger. It baffles me the amount of places that can’t.
Parma Daze
After the parma we explored around the pub for a little and discovered the rooftop beer garden - a spot that sold me on this pub and ensured I’d be back. looking as if it had recently been remodeled, the rooftop garden was host to a stunning view of the greatest city on earth, as well as plenty of tables and heaters to stay warm on chilly nights.
Eddie
The Fox Hotel on a Saturday night is a busy, happening place. A jovial, diverse crowd all knocking back a few drinks and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
TwoMunch
All up the Fox has a traditional pub atmosphere with closer to gastropub quality food. Tasty, generous serves and a very reasonably price. I had a great lunch and will definitely be back for another Sunday special.
Seb79
The best local around. Old school hospitality, quirky pub with cold beer and great food.
Antonio
My new favourite Melbourne pub.

Comfortable, unpretentious and friendly staff.

Also dog friendly which earns them an extra star.

And of course they stock an absolute shed load of different beers :)

Romiinteriors
Good atmosphere but little flexibility with food menu. It is a shame that with a very good vegetarian menu, the staff had no flexibility and would not accommodate customers with substituting some ingredients (even at an extra charge). They would rather forego a $50 dinner order. How bizarre!

"BoB25101980". As previously discussed, we are sincerely sorry about the impact the booking error had on your birthday plans.

Unfortunately this was genuinely down to human error, and we certainly would not favour one group of clients over another in any circumstance as your post appears to suggest.

As you recall, we did our best to help rectify a situation that was an oversight on our part. The Sly Fox. I have always really enjoyed the Fox's food and atmosphere and have been heading there for both for many years. Was really disappointed that they cancelled my birthday lunch, the day before, by initially pretending that I'd made an error in my booking. The booking was made for noon Saturday, they actually called me at 1pm on the Friday, asking, 'oh, where are you? You mustn't be coming'. I'm unconvinced that I would have got my birthday date wrong and the woman's inability to refer to the booking log reinforced that. Turns out, they wanted the space for a larger booking. Would have preferred an honest response than what was clearly a pre-calculated and ridiculous story about how the person who made my booking would 'be reprimanded'. My sphere is influence is small in comparison to the 40 people large booking that replaced my own but I know about 15 people who won't be coming back, not because of the food, but because of the Fox's absence of honesty and ethics.
Carmyl
Food was incredible. Every meal that was deliver to the table was huge and tasted great. :)
Salt And Pepper
Really yum vegan food! New fave place to eat out, thank you thank you thank you!
Mikey
Nice beer wall. Good Sunday band, some great beers and OK pub counter meal food but let down by (I presume) the grumpy owner. Vic roads license renewal centre close by. Standing in line there would easily beat this fellow for friendly customer service.
Karen
Not do vegan friendly. Have been here twice and been really disappointed both times. The Fox promotes itself as vegan friendly and even though they get heaps of vegans dining there, they don't even bother to use vegan cheese and sour cream on their burritos - the vegan version is minus the cheese and sour cream so about 20% as good as a real vegan burrito! I think this is just lazy and shows very little regard for a sizeable portion of their clientele. Also at my table they brought out burritos with cheese and sour cream on a totally vegan order, they just don't seem to show any care at all. And the bar is so understaffed and way too slow. Too many other great options in the area to ever bother going back.

Omg. Omg, what a wonderful experience. Ambience is so quaint and warm. Had a mothers day lunch here with my hubs and 2 young girls. Chose this place for lunch becuause of the veg/ vegan menu. Great choices for both my omnivore girls and vegan us.
Food was amazing with rich/full flavours. Wine choice also lovely. Wait service was excellent.
Wish we had pub like this closer to home but fully prepared to travel for such a great experience again and again.
Highly recommend to vegans and meat lovers alike :)

Best burger I have ever had!. I went to the Fox Hotel last night and that the mushroom ragou and quinoa burger. BEST thing I have ever tasted. The staff were great and the place was really warm and welcoming. Would take anyone there!
Food Hunter
I have the 300g Porterhouse. It was thick and juice and well cooked - this is hard to find in Melbourne pubs in my recent experience. I wasn't disappointed. I found the staff really friendly too. Thanks Fox Hotel.
Niki C
Just had the pulled pork roll.. possibly the best one I've ever had! The bartender is friendly too.
Andrew
It's hard to pick a favourite with so many pubs in the area but the Fox has everything. Great menu, a truly varied beer selection (and that's just the taps: so many bottled selections too), such friendly staff and a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Been here with large groups of friends or a dinner for two and it's always fantastic.
Chris Alexander
Spread the word...... Want a meal that you keep telling your mates about, this is the place. now been there about 10 times, and it still get me excited every time we go. best grub in melbourne.

Great Experience. This is the gun! Top hotel in Collingwood where I have lived for many years. This is a foodie experience and a great pub. Blasts any other pub I've been to in the inner suburbs.
Staff are terrific, food is fantastic, ambience excellent.
Robbie Burns ok Rose dropping off The Prov overpriced but this is THE ONE.
The seafood plate was fantastic but my Teppanyaki Pork Belly with Tempura vegies and a great mayo wasabi relish was exceptional.
We had a group of 10 there for a special occasion and it didn't let us down. All raved about their meals. Great vegetarian, Gluten free and Vegan options made it wonderful for all and a wide selections of ales.
Polly
Loving the current beers on tap. Very nice, light, vanilla stout and the Sprocket amber is superb.
Sophie Cameron-Krepp
Lovely food, lovely place, lovely staff, lovely price!. Absolutely stunning food - would highly recommend the baked eggplant. The onion and cabbage were bizarrely good, and the tahini covering into the eggplant was superb, just a all round amazing dish, and for less than $20!

Really cute place too - warm and welcoming, staff were sweet and not over bearing. A truly lovely place with truly lovely food.
Melbourne Girl
Our Favourite Pub in Melbourne!. The food is well priced, consistent and most importantly delicious! The decor is fabulously bohemian and the bar chicks are awesome. We visit on a weekly basis (mainly for Sunday Roast). The only downfall is it is becoming super busy!
Simone
Worth the wait. Have yet to have a bad meal here. Its been fab EVERYTIME! All gluten free items are clearly marked and staff are generally nice too. The only thing anyone could possibly ever moan about is the wait. But it has never not been worth the wait here. The food is great value, massive portions, quality food. The pub is really ambient and upstairs theres a great, mildly smelly terraced area. Great pub, up there with the best!
Doggers
Excellent food and vibe
Kambo
Sitting on the top level sunshine hitting and enjoying an excellent parma and wine! What more would you want!
Wocksie
Great pub food and beers!. One of the several pubs relatively close that has craft beers on tap. Have been here a few times for Sunday lunch now - and once for a family dinner - and the food is generally good. Menu is an interesting take on pub food and also has an extensive vegetarian selection. Had the pulled pork roll this time which was so delicious I hardly let my other half taste it! His terriyaki pork belly wasn't his favourite but will simply choose something else next time.
Craft beers on tap are great and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be back again.
Have Hunger, Will Travel
Ain’t what it used to be. Miss the good old days.

———————————————————————————————————————

The best pub food in Melbourne. I had the porterhouse and a friend had the fish plate and both were absolutely delicious. Generous serving for the price and cooked to perfection. The hazelnut and cinnamon Gyoza rounded the meal off perfectly and the flavours were well balanced. Add the extensive range of boutique beers into the equation and the Fox Hotel = the best pub in Melbourne.

4 out of 5. Always have a good menu to choose from and haven't been disappointed yet. Very good!

Always good. Have been coming here for years - friendly, well run pub - food is sensibly priced and always interesting and delicious - well done guys

Lunch and dinner and inner city pub. What a great little/big pub, with a typical grungy front bar, a retro video console and pin ball machine tucked away, fantastic roof top beer garden and the dimly lit dining area with fire place, a stage for music, intimate tables, candles, reddish decor, kitsch decor yet with the inner city pub feel.
No pokies, no glam, no jus.
Our dinner was promptly delivered with entrees first and mains to follow. We had steaks and goyzas and vegetarian delights all were excellent for the style of the pub.
Service was efficient and friendly, not overly, just enough to have you know they appreciate your custom.
A great steak cooked as asked for with nice plentiful sides included in the price. And i asked for a melbourne bitter and got one, how great! but they have a plethora of beers by the bottle, i spied 3 ravens and a host of others, with brunswick bitter on tap.
For lunch we popped in for more goyzas which were very nice but i think a tad over priced for a weekend lunch as too was the lamb burger and smokey beef burger, all generous with chips and wide and stacked high, in the style of Dannys or classic fish shop burgers, but were lacking an X factor hence the price was a tad high, 19 dollars, we think 13-15 would have been a fairer trade.
All in all we had a top time the two times we went, and have been last year and again, all consistant.
We look fwd to visiting on a cold winters evening, fires on, light music, dark, and inner city.
And for the solo diner, a delight, you can plonk yourself in a corner, and enjoy yourself no fear.

WORST PUB EXPERIENCE IN MELBOURNE!. Seriously used to like this place but after my last visit I won't be going back there again! The staff are arrogant and unfriendly, bordering on completely hostile- they might have chosen the wrong industry in hospitality! I ordered two meals, and after they messed up both orders two staff members berated myself and my partner for their mistake. Clearly they were not up to the task of taking my order and pouring drinks at the same time on a quiet Tuesday night. There are too many amazing pubs in melbourne to waste your time on this one!
Phoenix
Friendly, Hard-working Little Pub.. With a main menu priced from $19 - $27 you can't go wrong. Okay, it's not the cheapest but you get what you pay for, and in this case, it's delicious. Have had the yummy kangaroo steak and the Fish Plate: Barramundi, prawns, mussels and squid. A veritable feast. The salad was a little limp, but whatever! The Fox has a rooftop terrace with views of the city and pull across sun shades. A good, honest restaurant / bar.

Positives: yummy food and were flexible for my coeliacs friend. Negatives: not the friendliest bunch and the sign listing all the 'no's' (including no pub crawls) is a bit of a party pooper. Might as well add 'no fun'.
Seconds Please
Great place but they really need to sort out the stench coming from the men's loos plumbing in the courtyard.

Tasty beers/ciders on tap. Delicious pub food. Nice rooftop. Good people. Fox is a solid joint.

Best-kept secret not so secret anymore. Everyone I take here is genuinely surprised at how great the food is for such an unassuming place. Portion sizes are decent (be warned, the parma is HUGE), prices are low, and I've never been disappointed by anything on the menu. My absolute favourite is the Foxy Fish Plate - note to management: never take this off the menu! The interesting selection of on-tap beers isn't bad, either.

My only tiny complaint would be that the dessert menu is virtually nonexistant. Also, this place has taken off over the past year and trying to get a table on certain nights is becoming a challenge: the last two times I've visited my group has been forced to head down the street to the Gasometer due to the Fox being packed and noisy.

If you want a real burger go to The Tramway in north fitzroy

Parma and vegie. Great to have a pub that can offer a tasty traditional meat option and a tasty vegan option for myself. Even though I do not eat meat and the pub isn't vegan , it was fab to know that the bar staff asked me if I ate honey. So, vegans know that the fox rocks with knowledge!!! p.s I ate a yummy marinated tofu wrapped in seaweed and served with yummy greens. Definitely back with my meat eating boyfriend too. We love the fox food.

First of all let me say I was a regular at Foxs every week untill recently. . the food is not bad must of the time and generally is off a good pub grub standard. The service on the other hand is appalling. Some staff that work there, Obviously have no professional courtesy what's so ever. They are sulky, snappy at times and the senior bar lady whom I persume is owner never once smiled, asked me how I was... Not even a hallo something. They make no effort so I wouldn't recommend it. It's the most impersonnel pub in the area and I have been to them all. Simply on this reason I would not recommend anyone to eat here.

Fantastic food!

Kitchen is letting you down. I am a local and dine out all the time as I work long hours and do not have the time to cook. As I have said before the food is great last Sunday night was exceptional introduced new people to this great pub and they loved it.
Friday night more new friends but such a let down, food came out stone cold, my pet hate is soggie chips and hate when food is put on top of the chips, chips should be served along side in a bowl not under the Parma or fish or anything....your are to good to disappoint ... Keep up the standard good staff count.....

-----06 Aug, 2012-----

Never miss!. Been to the fox a few times always great, the girls do a great job, have been known to go there twice a week and will continue to do so.

At Long Last. I have been eating out all my adult life and find it hard to pleased with taste, meal size and value.
At long last I have found it!!!
The Fox Hotel.
( The Chicken Gyozas ROCK what a great way to start a meal)
Happy Customer
Sunday night dinner. As fans of "The Fox" and repeat customers we were really disappointed with dinner - "The Fox" fish platter. Two of us ordered the platter at $25 each. My platter was cold and my barrumundi in beer batter was overcooked and tiny. Even the serve of chips and salad was so stingy compared to previous meals we have had at this pub. I am not sure if ownership or the chef has changed but I won't be taking the family back anytime soon.

Hearty meals. Whilst a very long wait for the food to arrive, all in our party of nine enjoyed their meals. Chicken Parma was one of the best I've eaten in some time. Green salad wilted & ordinary, but who really cares given the size of the Parma & hot chips. Decor could do with a dusting and upgrade to make it more appealing.

Not even close to being a gastro pub.. Dinner Friday night was a bit of a disaster, I get it was super busy but when we ordered the meals we were advised of a 45min wait, no problem so ordered some garlic bread to tie us over. The under cooked garlic bread arrived over an hour later only and only after we had to ask for it. Followed by the meals around 30 minutes later. Two fish plates over cooked and I shanks tough and undercooked. I would have preferred to have been advised to choose different meal if shanks not prepped early enough. One positive is the good selection of well priced wines.

The menu hasn't changed much in years, not even close to being a gastro pub.

Good beers. Good selection of beer and a nice layout

Great Pub.. We love this joint.
Such an awesome beer range with great pub style food and a fun crowd but it can sometimes feel like you are interrupting something when you try to order at the bar.

Awesome menu, lots of great vegetarian options.
Beer Lover
Mmmm beer!. Do u love beer?? I do, & the girls at the fox obviously do too, as i found out recently. they must have over a 100 bottled beers..from organic,fruit,micro-brewed,from all over the world! and their own house fox lager on tap.they are also very helpful when choosing..all the staff seem to have quite a bit of beer knowledge and are keen to help u choose the right beers. I'll have too keep going back to try them all!

oh yeah, and the parma was great! as big as my head!
Mackdaddy
The fox rocks, plain and simple, awesome food choices, pork belly changed my life, micro beers on tap a a real treat too, don't change and see u again!
Rhys
The vegetarian options seem to be lacking soul despite the amount of choices. Not bad food but nothing you'd come racing back to. Better pub grub can be had in collingwood.
Melinda Brockhus
Love it!. Great vegan options and a great atmosphere - pricey but the food is lovely! reccomend it!
Claire
Love The Fox. Can't go past the chicken Parma!
Veritas
I had my worst dining experience ever here. My and my partner's food arrived over an hour late, after the rest of the table had finished their food, and when it arrived it was cold! When we complained to the manager she was rude and defensive claiming the food was only 42 minutes later and said what do you expect, it's a pub. We got a full refund but walked away hungry and angry! Atrocious service!

Down the Fox Hole. Man-sized food ahead. Make sure you startve yourself for a week before attempting to take on a parma from the fox. Not just big food, but big taste too. Also... beer....good beer.

HIt and Miss. I like the Fox but have had a pretty bad run of luck when it comes to food there. However my partner always receives excellent food from th fox kitchen so not sure whats going on!

Disappointed. Went to The Fox Hotel for the first time tonight with my boyfriend and his parents for dinner, read great things about the place and couldn't wait. Got there and it was really busy for a Sunday night and packed. We didn't know where to sit and so the waitress lead us to the dining area where the only table that was big enough to accommodate us was reserved and we were happy to leave and come back another time but the waitress swapped the reserved table around for us without any prompting and we really appreciated it. 40 mins later and our food hadn't arrived yet and that's when we spotted who the table was reserved for, there was 3 of them and they sat there glaring at us most of the time and at one point shared a racist joke amongst them at our expense and laughed heartily. When the food came, it was great, service was great and it was meant to be a good night where I got to thank my boyfriends parents with a nice dinner, but all I wanted to do was to get us out of there as soon as it was possible. The 3 shared an outdated ignorance, all old enough to know better and it spoiled what could have been a great night at a great venue.

I had the lamb shanks for $23. I enjoyed it thoroughly and thought it was very reasonable value for my money. The atmosphere on a Sunday night was relaxed and comfortable. I would come here again if ever in the area.

Best pub in Collingwood/ Fitzroy. We have tried many pubs in Collingwood and Fitzroy but no one can beat The Fox. The food is great, reasonable priced, extensive beer and wine list and relaxed crowd.

Down Right Foxy!. The Fox Hotel is one of our local pubs and we absolutely adore it. From the arty loungeroom-style dining area to the modern deck on the roof - The Fox has it all! The food is delicious - two particular favourites are the chicken burrito and the ENORMOUS parma. Perfect for dinner and drinks any night of the week they also do an amazing Sunday roast special. Make sure you check it out - just don't steal our table on the roof.

Lucky to be my local. Everyone should have a local like the fox. Even at it's busiest, it never loses it's local vibe and the staff are of a type that's becoming increasingly hard to find in Melbourne- they look like they're having a good time and they actually seem happy to serve or help. As a vego, I'm always impressed with the food. Strange for a pub, they actually seem to take their vego/vegan friends seriously-the menu doesn't just offer up a token couple of standard dishes, rather the vegetarian menu is eclectic and well thought out. Interesting beer list, good wine and even a pin ball machine. What more could you want-It doesn't hurt that the fox has what I consider one of the best rooftop views in Melbourne either.

Hmm. Unlike most pubs, there are quite a few vegetarian and vegan dishes on the menu... so we were excited! The entree was fantastic (a dumpling thing), so we were even more excited! Alas, the main meals were very ordinary. My parents who are meat eaters really love the place, but if you are a vegetarian, it's the same old story with pub food.

I went to the fox for my birthday this year and i have to say it was the best night ever! this was back in august and my friends are still talking about what a fantastic night we all had. the food, music, atmosphere, beers & cocktails were all amazing. on top of that the staff were just wonderful. thank you foxy people for helping make my birthday a night to go down in history!

Cool pub. This is one of the best pubs around. The staff are super cool and friendly. The chicken parma is enormous and tasty and the $10 jugs on Sundays is perfect.

My fave pub at the moment.

Quick Fox wins our vote. Took a group here last week. Seriously, you cannot complain. Excellent food (the parma is gargantuan) and vibe and really great service. These girls are running a tight ship here- food all came out together, promptly cleared off, friendly as you like- considering it was packed and also had a party happening there on the night everyone was cool headed.

The wine list is good but the beer selection is something to be seen- overwhelming!

Highly recommend for a good hearty meal in comfy environs. Go girls! We'll be back

Great Pub. Second time back and the food is still amazing. Had the lamb shanks this time and it was nearly a sexual experience. YUM! Great to see a pub serving produce like kangaroo and bugs and duck. The food is to die for at a reasonable price and there is also a selection of beers you don't see everyday. Awesome!!
Waynos
Great place!! The food looked amazing and well priced. There was a great range of beers on tap and bottled. You can get cash out at the bar!! Excellent outdoor area as well and plenty of indoor dining also. Just a great place all round.
Bridie
Great food, heaps of different beers, a rooftop deck, live music, friendy staff a must if your looking for an old school pub with heaps of charm!

...I had received word that their parma was excellent and I was keen to give this a try. My first impression of this place was that it was super groovy. The front bar looked like your standard pub but with rock images along the walls and amber light shades hanging from the ceiling.

I'll keep this pretty simple. I love the Fox . The Fox is another of my local pubs and it is my favourite haunt for a Sunday afternoon drink. The Fox is pretty unparalleled when you are perched on the rooftop beer garden and the weather is lovely. Look at that view back to the city! While most of my time at the Fox is spent in said beer garden, making my way through a cheeky bottle of rose, I also enjoy a pub meal there too. The Fox has an extensive menu that spans the standard pub favourites (parma ($18), burger ($16), fish and chips ($18)) and veers into more interesting choices (morton bay bug pie ($19), duck risotto ($19), pork belly ($23) or kangaroo fillet ($20)). It also has a very impressive vegetarian menu (think eggplant and zucchini stack ($17), marinated tofu steak ($17) or vegetarian mousakka ($17)) and is gluten-free friendly (the menu denotes which items are GF or can be prepared GF). So it's perfect for your dietary challenged friends (yes that includes me). I usually g

We visited the Fox with a group of friends on a Saturday night, it was busy and buzzing. The menu had a mix of pub classics and more modern Aussie dishes.
MEL: HOT OR NOT
The Fox Hotel is an old-school boozer which outwardly looks more 'pub' than 'gastro-pub'. The venue is an eclectic conglomeration of sticky-carpet-esque spaces, including the high-stooled front bar, the dimly lit dining area, squishy couches, a small outd

Fox Hotel is an old style local pub - dark interior, pool tables, slightly musky smell…but has a pretty big food range on offer, not just the typical pub meals. There are a few gluten free options on the menu, and a few meals that can be made GF on request. I tried the salt and pepper squid which was nice, good generous sized serving…not the most amazing meal I've ever had but not the worst. This is a good option if you want somewhere casual to go with friends and some good pub grub.
