Review Bluebird Espresso Cafe - Collingwood

Edwar Kartio
Nice quaint cafe on Johnston st. The scrambled egg was quite average and the pork Benny was a delightful combo with the waffle. Service was great. There's a little area at the back which is a great surprise. Food - 5 Service - 6 Vibe - 7 Price - $$

It's sad when a mainstay of your breakfasting weekend goes so far down hill. What was a decent menu has been replaced by the generic. The Peachy Green Smoothie was particularly disappointing. The promise of mango, peach, ginger coconut and honey was delivered in the form of a tasteless icy green slushy. Won't be returning :-(

I found this place by accident and it was the best accident ever. AMAZING food and wonderful service. will definitely be coming back very soon !

Great place, great vibe and amazing coffee and food!

Love this petite little cafe. Excellent food with hasty service. Friendly staff and good decor. I recommend the mango panacotta!
Timothy Hamilton
Very nice café. Quiet and intimate. Staff are friendly without being in your face and give you enough time to look over the menu. The food was also delicious. I got the pork Benedict and it was a perfect combination of flavours in a good portion size. Would reccomend.

Great little cafe I found by pure chance but so glad I did! Superfood brekky bowl was so delicious I could have licked the bowl. The staff were delightful and obviously take pride in the preparation and presentation of their food. Their regular clients appear to be treated like family. Only wish I lived closer!

Dukkah eggs were out of control and included the best mushroom I've ever had. They were so good that the chicken sandwich seemed only "very good" by comparison. The coffee was probably alright. I have no idea; I smashed it down. Beautiful neat decor.

Coffee and food always delicious! Cornbread is to die for and their banana bread with mascarpone and pistachio is amazing. Always friendly, great service too.
Elias Alsaad
Had breakfast there yesterday and the food and coffee was fantastic. We really enjoyed the atmosphere! Highly Recommend!

We made a booking but the waitress forgot to write it down so we had to sit outside weather was wet but they were apologetic. One thing that waitresses need to be aware of. Don't clear a table when someone is still eating. Leaning over a diner to collect an empty plate is just plain rude. Food was good and service otherwise good.

This place is effing awesome ! Great everything, super consistently good. Can't wait to come again.

Dirty burger with a beef patty 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

Thanks Serge for having us. First class service only trumped by the food. And that coffee blend is an absolute winner. We'll be back in for sure!

No acknowledgment, no eye contact, no thank you....no nothing from barista. Alas good coffee.

Best coffee i've had in Melbourne. The staff aint bad either.

Great place for breakfast, the food is always cooked to perfection and fresh. A word of warning Bluebird is always busy especially over the weekend so make sure you get in early
Lulu Roseman
Cute cafe with coffee and food that quietly dazzles. The zucchini and mint fritters with poached eggs is a true stand out dish, truly stunning.

Best breakfast in Melbourne! Amazing coffee and amazing food a must go too, going again tomorrow

It was a sunny sunday morning,i’ve decided to get some brunch near my house. I found this retro and small cafe in collingwood & easily found parking spot near the cafe.

I ordered Chicken schnitz, which is so crispy and cooked perfectly inside. The lime, the ginger, the chili & coconut slaw remind me of typical asian food that i usually eat at the restaurant really well blended with the chicken. S’mores brioche French toast is my top list recommendation to go!the toast is so crispy and full of goodness inside it. Although is such a lovely meal, but i think the portion is quite small compare to others cafe.

Overall, the food was excellenteee!the place was comfy, the staffs very friendly and the ambience was very positive. I’ll be back for sure🤟🏻
#BHAsFoodDiary

Bluebird espresso at Collingwood. A small cafe and food was good. Nice coffee and friendly staff with good service. It was nice to have the brunch with friends there.

Small cafe with very fair prices. Food was ok (we had French toast and eggs Benedict), but the coffee was unfortunately subpar for Melbourne. Service was attentive and friendly though.

My Chilli scrambled was great, very flavoursome - the tomato provided a nice element of juicy/slight sweetness to cut through the spice. The bread used was a bit odd though, not what I’d expect eg a sourdough, it was too soft and crumbly. Good serving size though would def order again. Boyfriend’s ‘acai bowl’ was underwhelming didn’t even have acai in it and barely any fruit..should’ve just been called yoghurt and granola. Presentation was also sloppy.
Iced latte was pretty good and strong but ordered it as a fallback option as they don’t do iced mocha. Staff were friendly and place was quite small inside with a cute courtyard outside. Prices pretty good.

It's sad that since it has been under new management, bluebird, which was a local institution, is only a bleak copy of what it was.
I should have taken care because on a Saturday morning the place was almost empty, while to used to be bustling.
There isn't too much to say about it now. It lacks the vibe, the coffee is very average and although the menu hasn't changed much, the execution is poor.
My eggs with pulled pork were lacking flavour - is the pulled pork home made? The hollandaise was average, and it was serving on toast instead of the corn waffle described in the menu, with no explanation. The dish was acceptable but lacked twist and flavour (as well as seasoning). There was a few sad leaves of rocket salad on the side. Nothing like the pictures on zomato...
Had the ‘S’mores Brioche French Toast’ and a cup of cappuccino. The artwork on the cappuccino seemed a bit shaky, maybe it was intentional? But the random bits of melted chocolate powder on top made it a fine piece of art. Also there was some more chocolate powder on the rim of the cup; a nice change to sipping coffee with a touch of chocolate sweetness.

The ‘S’mores Brioche French Toast’ consisted of two slices of cornflake crusted toasts sandwiching some melted white and pink marshmallows and nutella. Some mork chocolate sauce was drizzled on top of the brioche French toast and there was a handful of cut up strawberries. Finally the plate was decorated with some sugar dust and edible flowers. The toast was crunchy, not hard but a little dry, and in between the toast was oozing out the melted marshmallows; gooey and sticky. Every bite was pure sweetness predominately from the sugar sweet marshmallow and a noticeable trace of chocolaty flavour from the nutella spread. However the mork chocolate sauce which seemed to be dark chocolate lacked flavour in the presence of the marshmallows and nutella; it would have been great if the dark chocolate sauce was more intense to get some bitter sweet flavour to balance the overall sweetness. A generous amount of strawberries was definitely needed to tone down the sugar sweetness from the toast and marshmallows; the strawberries themselves were not that sweet and a little tart.

Overall the meal was decent; cappuccino was nice and flavourful; the gooey marshmallows contrasted well with the crunchy French toast and the flavour was great but maybe a little too sweet. Definitely perfect for a sweet tooth.

How amazing has the Melbourne weather been! It prompted Mini Me and I to go for a stroll with no specific cafe in mind for a Saturday morning brekkie date. We headed up Johnston St. in Collingwood knowing that something would catch our eye and spotted Bluebird Espresso. It wasn’t too busy and as it was quite hot and sticky outside, we opted for a table inside.

Walked past here on a walk with the dog and decided to have some lunch. I asked if I could go through the cafe to get to the courtyard, which was no problem! :) decided to go for the peanut butter and raspberry smoothie and didn’t actually have any food. Smoothie as good. Normally I would like to sit in the sun, but it was very hot so had a lovely spot in the shade. Would love to come again and try the food.

Made a booking through the Zomato app and it was declined. Headed here anyway at the same time the booking was for and there were plenty of table available, unsure why it was declined..
Anyway parking was easy, the cafe it's self was quiet cute and had ample seating. The waitress was lovely but our order did get mixed up and the dish that was supposed to have gluten free bread had sourdough and the dish that was to be sourdough was gluten free. I had poached eggs on sourdough with a side of avocado and it was delicious. Also had an iced long place that was perfect. The menu is extensive if you don't want something as simple as poached eggs.

The cafe is located on the quieter end of Johnston Street. I came here for breakfast with 3 other friends. We got a table in the courtyard out the back, and had a cosy seating area under the shades. We were all happy with the dishes we ordered; food was tasty and came in good portion. If you do visit, try getting a table in the courtyard.

I decided to check this cafe out after it was recommended by a work friend. Being a Saturday, I knew it would be busy so opted for an early morning breakfast to beat the potential queues (& parking woes). We got there just after 9am and were able to have our pick of whichever table we wanted!
I chose the pork benedict as I was intrigued by the cornbread waffle...and I don't mind a bit of pulled pork!! The dish was super tasty - the jalapeño cheddar cornbread was delicious and savoury, blending perfectly with the textures of the smoked pulled pork and creaminess of the poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. The serving sizes were also very generous - I was still full that evening despite not eating lunch! Coffee was a little on the bitter side, and served warm. Overall, this little cafe lived up to its expectations.

Food: 4/5
Environment: 3/5
Service: 3.5/5

Sometimes it's the hidden gems that surprise you the most and this definitely fit Bluebird Espresso to a tee. One of my new favourites with all the brunch standards served to perfection. Nothing could've prepared me for the magic here. Bluebird Espresso is a 'blink and you'll miss it' cafe along Johnston Street in Collingwood so definitely look out for it. It is quite small in size though there is additional seating out the back but very little seating on the street (max 5 seats). It is bright and cozy offering a view of some of the cooking done at the counter. The crowd seemed to be made up of a mix of hipsters and locals which left a pretty good first impression...go where the locals go.
Monnie-Bear
Great little local cafe. It's cosy, unpretentious and serves excellent coffee and food. Favorites are chili scrambled eggs, French toast and baked eggs.

Seriously guys, remove the surcharge for using eftpos. It's so annoying and no one else that's decent does it. It's the cost of running a business I'm afraid. Food has gone down hill since ownership change, so disappointing
Honkytonk
Cosy spot, decent amount of space and super friendly staff. Food was great, by which I mean their old original menu was better in terms of taste- they have refocused their menu to be, inline with the rest of the current cafe scene (which I dub the #healthy-eating-phase-of-cafes). Not a fan of the new menu. I use to be somewhat a regular. Note: the draft from the slightly opened front door puts a damper on the experience, so try to keep that in mind, when seating

Bluebird used to be our go-to for a Sunday brunch and these guys hit the nail on the head with their breakfast options, coffee, service and chilled out ambiance. Unfortunately, we returned here a couple of weeks ago after being away for a while to a completely different menu, below par service Listen, I'm all for change and happy to try new things but Bluebird has now gone from being in a league of its own, to exactly the same as every other cafe - which is not what you want in a competitive area. After discussing our confusion throughout breakfast we decided to take a stab and asked if they'd had a change of management and sure enough - they have! I truly hope they can get themselves back on the right track but I won't be trying again for a long while.

Found this place as one of the top places in the area, as I was in Collingwood for an event. Got the Benedict with waffles and It was so good! I loved the textures of the meal. I just thought that the place was a bit cramped for size, other than that it was great
Scomanda
For a Saturday morning breakfast, my son and I decided to visit an old favourite. Not sure whether there's been a change in management or just the staff but we were disappointed with the quality of food.

The menu has recently changed, so my old favourite of "baked eggs" has been removed off the menu. We ordered the Dukkah Eggs and French Toast. The Dukkah eggs smelt and tasted strongly of vinegar and the French toast was sickeningly sweet. Too sweet to finish!
Sweetsbizznezz
I think Bluebird is currently relying on its old reputation. On my last visit during lunch hours the cafe was practically empty and visibly dirty, with both food littered floors and tables, the seats are also in desperate need of a clean. At the same time in the exposed kitchen one of the chefs was loudly berating another about hygiene in the kitchen. Not something you want to hear whilst eating in a dead silent cafe.
The new menu is so boring and expensive! For lunch you are essentially limited to some run of the mill salads and there were no substantive savoury meals under $18. This is compared to the old menu with many varied and interesting sandwich options. I had the poached chicken, which was average, I found there were too many ingredients so it became quite muddled in flavour.
I think it would be disappointing for anyone searching for a good cafe to visit in the area to end up at Bluebird, it really does not live up to its old standards. There are much better options available.

Tiny little cafe down Johnson st, came here for Mother's Day and i think we tried everything on the menu not a large choice but there was not one complaint! The s'mores French toast is to die for please never get rid of it *drools* staff were super friendly and service was great! The coffee could be a little hotter but probably just we're busy! Cafe itself probably needs a little work done however overall a good experience!

After reading the review and checking the rating of a few cafes in collingwood,i decided to try bluebird espresso this morning. The parking around here is a challenge although it was 8am in the morning. The staff were friendly and attentive. With the recommendation of a few savoury and sweet dishes, i decided to try the french toast. First glance, it looks really nice and yummy. However, I must say it is the worst french toast i ever had after the first bite. It basically coated with a layer of oily , crispy and tasteless egg skin. The internal texture was dry and dense. The chocolate sauce and melted marshmallows just sandwiched between the toast in a messy way. Totally not appealing at all even though there were strawberry and edible flowers on the plate. It is pretty much just sugar and oil. Seriously a disappointment. The coffee was good though . Later on,i Found out from a friend who works nearby that the cafe is now run by different owner and the menu has changed while the food quality just went downhill since. Hmm. I certainly wont be back considering there are many other cafes nearby.

I have eaten here quite a few times and I like it overall. I have had the smashed avocado, the vine tomatoes, the zucchini and mint fritters, the salad and a few of the burgers/sandwiches. The food is always top quality. Smashed avocado is very generous in serving size last time I had it. My only gripe is that the salad sandwich should be called a salad burger because it comes on a roll as opposed to actual bread slices. I was expecting a sandwich but got a burger, it still tasted good. I really like the coffee here too. They do a good cold brew. Keep up the good work guys!

I had brunch here today. The food was excellent. The service was ok but not the best.

I ordered crispy bacon w scrambled eggs and a short macchiato for a change. The waitress wanted me to order chilli scrambled but that's not what I wanted and I had to really stress that. It was almost a battle of wills but I won. Lol

The scrambled eggs were the best I've ever had. They tasted silky, creamy, and they just melted in my mouth. Just perfect! Yummmmm haha

The middle cut bacon was cooked really well, but not crispy.

The macchiato didn't arrive and it wasn't until I was almost finished eating that the same waitress asked me if I had got my coffee. It's not a big cafe and it wasn't full but she must have been busy so I told her not to worry about it.

Overall this was a great meal... minus the coffee haha.

Went here for a coffee with my mother. I found the service to be really unfriendly. We went there for coffees and asked for a menu.I felt the staff were really disrespectful and joking to themselves about us asking to see the menu when ordering coffees.

Note to staff: some people like to see the coffee menu to check pricing and the range of drinks available. A little respect to paying customers goes a long way. Will not return.

Pork Benny with jalapeños cheddar cornbread waffle is soooo delicious! Must try!

S'more Brioche French Toast - super crunchy and not too sweet!
Gourmet Explorer
It's a small cafe. We went there on Easter Friday. Luckily, we didn't need to wait. The chicken schnitzel was crispy outside and tender inside. It mixed with some salad which had some bitter taste. The chicken salad tasted delicious. The coffee is very milky and smooth.

Sigh. We've lived locally for 6 years and have been going to Bluebird since its beginning. The coffee was excellent and favourites for us were the baked eggs, chorizo burger and the bluebird burger. It's been awhile since we've been - our favourite little cafe got super popular so we got lazy and couldn't be bothered with the queue. We decided to treat ourselves this morning and go and see if the new owners had kept up the excellent standards. The coffee is still great as is the service but the food is a bit blah. None of our favourites remain on the menu. Understandably times change so we're not all hung up on that. I ordered the smoked pulled pork on a jalapeño and cheddar waffle, two poached eggs and hollandaise. The boy got the burger. Both $18.50. The poached eggs were perfect BUT I had a dismal amount of pulled pork on my plate, about the equivalent of one spoonful. The waffle was over cooked and really hard. The bits I did eat were tasty but mostly cheddar. I didn't taste any jalapeño. The burger looked good and tasted pretty good. The only complaint was that the dollop of mustard in it was consumed in one unhappy mouthful. The chips were delicious. Overall we're sad about the state of the place. It could do with a lick of paint and we miss the kitsch stuff on the walls and the retro Berocca on the menu. The menu seems a bit faddish now with the smoothie bowls and rainbow plates. We loved the hearty plates of bacon, hash browns, chorizo, all the poached eggs and pancakes. The breakfast of heroes. Something worth paying almost $20 for. RIP baked eggs. Your chorizo tomato and eggy goodness will never be forgotten.

NB. I spoke to our server about our experience and she was super chill. Thanks for taking our feedback like a champ.

You should also know that the menu pictured is really old and the only thing I recall still on the menu is the dukkah eggs.

Nice environment. Love the food here (especially the eggs. amazing) But I wanted to order dirty burger initially(just the name can make me wanna eat it!) but menu has been updated so no dirty burgur for me😥. Still veryyyy yummy food.

Quite disappointed after seeing such high ratings here. I decided to come here based on the menu on Zomato, but found that the menu is actually almost entirely different.

I ordered the "chicken schnitz", which was thin meat-wise, dry and very much over-fried. The crust had that very dark brown color, was too hard to cut with the steak knife they provide and tasted near-burnt. It kind of ruined the whole dish for me, even with the slaw.

Coffee was alright. Won't be coming back.
Lee
No longer one of my favourites. It once had a range of interesting menu options that set it apart as Bluebird but unfortunately the menu has shrunken significantly and is now generic (could be any other cafe). Coffee was tasty, and the dish ordered was solid but any uniqueness is gone. Menu listed on Zomato as of this review is not accurate at all.

I come here regularly and always have a great coffee (Proud Mary). The menus has a great menu selection and I haven't been let down by a dish once.
Standouts are the chilli scramble and the Pork Benny on cornbread waffle on the new menu. Staff are as friendly as the menu is tasty.
JT Esse
Great food
Potato rostis and pork Benny were standout. Great quality coffee. Only disappointment was it could have done with a good clean . Seat cushions were very dirty. Dead flys etc.
XiaoHui Teo
Been eyeing this place after all the good comments, it definitely lives up to the expectations. We ordered the chicken schnitz, scrambled eggs, dukkah eggs and the pulled pork and poached eggs on potato rosti. The food arrived promptly and the flavours are great. Good portion size for breakfast and the price is rather reasonable.
Iris Myandowski
The current menu doesn't completely reflect what is posted here as the menu. Which is a shame because i had been anticipating that banana bread for days prior to my visit - elusive dream breakfast which got away. Still good though.
Pointblank
YES:
Soy chai - always consistent
Dukkah eggs (without chorizo) - only disappointed once out of the 12 times
Banana bread - sweet and satisfying

Bluebird Espresso has some amazing scores on Zomato, but I can’t say I fell in love with the place myself. I dragged my friend Jo to check out the food and whilst the service was warm and hip, the food left a little to be desired. The spot is great and it wasn’t too busy at all when we got in, which is a boon as the seating is a tighter around the edges. We had the zucchini and mint fritters ($16) as well as the grilled halumi sandwich ($12.50) with mushroom, dukkah, spinach and mayo. The fritters were alright, but were soggy in the middle with the mint being hard to taste. The harrisa labne was a highlight. The burger was okay, but was a bit too plain.

Unfortunately, this place is a bit overrated (4.6?). We found the coffee and baked eggs rather average. The seats behind the cafe was comfy and intimate though
Leena
It's good to find the cafe close by school and see ladies come alone to spend nice relaxing time on Saturday afternoon. Excellent hospitality with well knowledgeable staff. Served a bottle of water first and fill regularly for you. I enjoyed beautiful aroma medium to stong flavored latte. I hope some elegant decent restaurant's service staff can come and check their quality of customer service.

This small cafe is owned and run by Tony and Jane, the loveliest couple who are extremely friendly and greet their regulars by name. Their food is excellent, price is incredibly reasonable and serving sizes are very generous. Please pop in and support this local home-owned business. Have a great day! Jennen.

Cosy and bright spot with some tasty brunch options. Unfortunately my selection of homemade cornbread with avocado, salsa and poached eggs was very underwhelming. The cornbread was okay but became heavy after a few bites with bland salsa made mostly of black beans and nothing else to balance out the density. There was minimal avocado. Positives were the poached eggs and the Mork hot chocolate. Fellow diners enjoyed their meals and I was left with a bit of food envy.
Pirate Sam
I'm not sure if it deserves the hype but it's a very good cafe. Been twice, once I had the avocado smash the last time I had a ham & cheese croissant. Both were good. Very tight seating.
Katrina Bulman
This place used to have the best smashed avo in Melbourne (that I've found). I went there today and it was not as good as it used to be. There was less goats cheese, less acidity, the flavours just weren't there.

I also noticed that the atmosphere was different, though much of the decor was the same (minus the little dinosaurs) and that all of the staff were new, so asked if it was under new management, which was confirmed.

I really feel that they should change the name, as it just isn't the same as it was. Very disappointed.
Julycheee
Cosy little cafe with some rather tight seating spaces. We sat down after midday but several dishes were already out, unfortunately. We tried the dirty burger and baked eggs. The burger had a great bun and tasted okay, but the chips weren't great. The baked eggs were rather small and the chorizo (extra on top) was also a bit of a stingy portion. While I loved the crisp and fluffy bread for dipping in the baked eggs, the dish was way too salty. The staff highly recommended this dish to me, but I've had much better baked eggs at brunch cafes.
Tony
In a cafe-filled suburb like Collingwood, and on a street choke-full of delicious meals like Johnston Street, Bluebird Espresso stands on its own with outstanding meals that are as tasty as they are beautiful.
Belinda
Amazing coffee but disappointed the french toast is no longer the salted caramel and banana (as is still published on the menu on their website and Zomato). The new one has berries and meringue, still nice, but nowhere as amazingly delicious as the previous one.
Tia Kelly
This is by far one of my favourite cafes in Melbourne. The menu is quite small but all the dishes are done perfectly every time, if you want an amazing Baked Eggs this is the place to get it.
The staff are always friendly and i have never had a bad coffee dining in or takeaway from this lovely cafe.
A great place to head for a weekend brunch.
Al Pierson
Doing it well, fast - really fast! I totally enjoyed my flat white so I followed it up with an espresso, very well extracted. My eggs were great. Good form guys.

Love it. Best cafe in Collingwood. Excellent coffee. Excellent food. For the most part, excellent service. Well worth going out of your way for.

Great food and coffee and great value for money. Came here for lunch with the family and we were well looked after. Will definitely be back. Definitely worth the visit.

Sorry I'm confused.. Where am I? Toorak or Collingwood? I have never encountered such rude and obnoxious front of house staff with such disgraceful attitudes in my cafe life. Unfortunately the only reason I come to this cafe is cause there food is lovely, and for this reason only.. The chefs/cooks need to get the thumbs up here as they are the only staff members that are keeping this business going.. I think the management need to re access this situation a little better and employ staff with proper customer service skills..

It's Friday morning around 9:40 ... got that feeling .... can't wait to 3 pm ....

Must commend the proprietor for turning a small, forgotten space within an industrial area into this quaint, unique, retro, rich in natural finish timber tops, easy to enjoy cafe space complete with an exotic vintage Pink handbasin in the toilet.... Great vibes and ambiance, Courtyard at the back or the bench by the big window at the front.

Seems to have a strong albeit small menu, let's do Ham & Cheese Croissant, big culinary Friday coming up.

On the coffee side, above average, short black took a while to come and take away Soy latte was well made.
Not so on the Noisette Ham & Cheese croissant, burnt on some part and "rubbery" hard to cut.

Pleasant and hipster looking team, thank you.

Any combination of dukkah and burst in your mouth eggs had my instant attention. Combined with labneh, mushrooms and baby spinach on toasted sourdough, this was a really enjoyable breakfast. A cosy but loud place, many serving staff means instant attention and fast turnaround.
Kate
Love this place. Cute and cosy decor and a great outdoor courtyard. Coffee is good and service is friendly and prompt.
The granola is delicious, a perfect combo of nuts, oats and fruit. Have also had the pear loaf, which was nice but a little dry. Would recommend.
John Smith
This café is a lovely place for a Sunday brunch on Johnston street. The food was delicious and the service fast and flawless. I highly recommend the baked eggs! I'll definitely go back next time I'm around!
Bella
Went to brunch with a friend here a few weeks ago. The cafe is nowhere near tram stops but there is a bus stop nearby.
I ordered the passion fruit loaf which is quite odd for me considering I never order sweet for brunch. The dish was a lovely balance of sweet and sour. The sweetness from the passion fruit and the sour from the raspberries. It was a little burnt but tasted decent.
Reet
Had breakfast for 2 plus a pram and baby with us. Staff were accommodating and let us have a table of 4 to make having a pram more comfortable at the table.
Service was good and staff were friendly.
Ordered the zucchini fritters, a chorizo sandwich and coffee. Zucchini fritters were nice and had lots of zest and the coffee was great.
Will definitely return.

Bluebird Espresso has all the makings of a nice cafe. Unfortunately it was a truly awful experience. The service wasn't acceptable by any standards and one of the waitresses was incredibly rude. Not the start to the day we were after.
Gotham
The coffee was good and the staff friendly. The food (baked eggs and mashed avocado) was fine, but nothing I'd rave about to be honest. I'd happily go back, but this place isn't at the top of my list in this precinct.
Jackie Pipe
Really impressed with this place. Friendly service and a bright fun atmosphere.

The food was fresh and delicious. The composition of the zucchini and lentil salad meant that the flavours were perfectly balanced, creating a tangy delight on my palette. The portion size was also good as it was just enough to keep me satisfied but just enough to keep me wanting more.

The granola was also nice as the berries were fresh and flavoursome. I really liked the nuts in the mix, it grave a nice crunch.

The chai latte wasn't impressive however, the chai flavour was too strong for my liking and the flavours seemed to clash. It could have done with some cinnamon perhaps.

Was still enjoyable overall 👍

Love love love this place! Their French toast is the best I've ever eaten compared to anywhere in Melbourne. Coffee is great and they have a nice alfresco area at the back of the cafe. Would definitely come back again!
Hilda Lee
Came here with friends for brunch on Labour Day. Staff were friendly and lovely, we were acknowledged by multiple staff and taken to a table immediately. As we were saying that the outside area looked nice, the staff told us that they would inform us if a table become available and we could move there. Coffee was great - bitter first taste, but was immediately balanced with a rich and sweet taste. Coffee art was inconsistent but it wasn't a big deal considering the taste - would give it 9/10. I ordered the brioche French toast which was a massive portion, with a huge dollop of mascarpone, meringue, syrup and fresh berries. I love how it wasn't overly sweet, like in some other cafes. The baked eggs was a small portion but one of the best I've had, eggs were perfectly runny and it was flavorful. We also had the fritters which I thought was too salty, would recommend the kitchen cut down the salt on them, or serve with salad or something to balance it out as it only came with 2 eggs. I would say overall the food was nice, but was missing the 'spectacular' factor for me to rate this place a 5/5. Prices were good as my meal with the coffee was under $20. Menu was small so I probably wouldn't come back to try other food, as there are so many other cafes to try nearby. But overall was a pleasant experience and would recommend!

Dear Zomatoans, here at the moment and salivating over the delicious baked eggs. Stupendous, one of Melbourne's best. Indeed, Melbourne must have the best foodie scene in the world. Let's enjoy this moment in history.
Baked eggs were cooked to perfection. The chorizo and the spicy salsa delicious.
I need to revisit.
Read an article in THE AGE today that New Yorkers are recruiting Melbournian baristas and cafe ideas: not difficult to see why.

One of my favourite cafes in Melbourne! If it wasn't for my last visit I would have rated it a solid 5/5. Unfortunately, on my most recent visit, we ordered a vegetarian dish, but was provided meat in it. Staff were quick to apologise and did the right thing in not charging us for the dish. Additionally, compounded by the fact that my last few visits at this cafe were stellar, I will be quick to forget this unfortunate mistake. The coffee is always superb and bluebird by all means serve my favourite traditional smashed avo dish in the entirety of Melbourne!! All of their other dishes are amazing too from the fritters to the french toast which I warn you could put you into a food coma!! The staff are always so cheerful, lively and friendly.
If any other cafe made the mistake of not delivering a vegetarian dish, I would probably not return, but like I said given my past (excellent) experience with the cafe, and also the quick apology and fix up, I can forgive and forget in this instance.

Came here for a catch up lunch with a friend who recommended it to me and was very impressed. First impression was that it is very small but we sat out in the courtyard out the back in the sun in a lovely setting with umbrellas and decking. Service was excellent and the staff are really friendly and suit the layback relax cafe feel. I enjoyed the special of house made bircher with poached peaches, pistachios fresh blueberries and maple syrup along with a strong long soy mac. My friend indulged in the brioche french toast with vanilla mascarpone fresh berries and pistachio praline. Overall food presentation was sensational and the food is packed full of flavour at such an excellent price. Will certainly be informing others of this great little cafe.
Hello. Imnikki
Bluebird used to served a fried brioche toast with mushroom (can't remember the name of the dish) and that used to be one of my favourite brunch dish ever. Was a bit sad when I visited recently and notice that it was not on the menu anymore. The fried brioche toast is still there but it's new incarnation is in the form of a sweet dish, complete with whatever fruits that are in season (currently stone fruits) and mascarpone. Regardless, food was still delicious and the smashed avo and baked egg are something not to be missed. Excellent service and great coffee rounds up a great dining experience. Ending on a totally non-food related note, I was pleasantly surprised when I was sat next to the kitchen and didn't come out smelling like food and oil after my meal. Awesome exhaust and ventilation set up!

Finally this place has a good owner who takes pride in his establishments. Coffee is great and never burnt, food is good too. Way better than the last arrogant angry unprofessional that used to own it.

This is our most favorite local place Lovely atmosphere - clean, fresh, warm friendly & inviting.
Had Yumm brownie and Indian spiced carrot and feta muffin - so good! I highly recommend Bluebird.

Hands down the best brunch I've had in a while. I was greeted by a super friendly waitress who, upon hearing it was my first visit, let out a very enthusiastic "Welcome!" The coffee was absolutely delicious (though pricey at $4); it went down in a few smooth gulps. The menu was incredible. Way too much on there that I wanted. I settled on the Mexican corn bread, and it was everything I wanted. Fresh, tasty and very filling. The dirty burger was highly recommended, but I've also got my eye on the wagyu burger and fried chicken. Can't wait to come back.

This place on Johnson st, has a nice little outdoor area, with the best breakfast I've had in a long time. The zucchini, mint and feta fritters with Harissa labne, pickled cucumber and poached eggs is a must have for any fritter fan! I have hunted all over Melbourne for good fritters, and this place comes up trumps for presentation and taste! My friend had the gingerbread with mascarpone, poached fruit and nuts and it was deliciously rich! Coffee was excellent and couldn't fault the service, can't wait to come back to try the rest of the menu.

Great little cafe. The menu had some good options and the coffee was decent (even though it was too hot coming out). I couldn't go past the French Toast in all its sugary goodness for my breakfast. How I usually rate French Toast for breakfast is on the "was it worth it?" scale. The answer was absolutely a yes! The only thing I can say is that it needed some salt to cut through all the sweetness. My fault for not ordering a side of bacon. Rookie mistake. My partner had the Smashed Avo and rated it. Generous portion too. Staff were friendly and service was really good. I would go back if I'm in the area for breakfast again.

I’m always on the look out for new breakfast spots in Melbourne. Every week there’s always a new opening just around the corner, making it impossible to keep up (well unless you’re eating out three times a day). Although it’s great to check out the newest openings, I like to visit the older classics, places that are not on my usual breakfast radar.

Bluebird is an awesome small cafe, probably one of the best in Collingwood. The place is beautiful, staff are friendly and heaps chill, the coffee was one of the best I've had in Melbourne, and the Smashed Ave was probably one of the best I've had too. Plus there's a courtyard outback, and everything was reasonably priced. Definitely going back, you should try it if you've never been here before.

An unexpected surprise when searching through the usual brunch choices, we decided to give it a try for the French toast on offer. Unfortunately the menu had changed slightly and the French toast had a slight update to reflect seasonal fruit instead of bananas. Luckily, it tasted still amazing, though it kind of grew on you as you worked thru your meal. Would recommend people to try, but just give it a chance if it doesn't immediately impress .. It's a meal that def grows on you!

Lovely atmosphere - clean, fresh, hip, warm friendly & inviting. Had perfect brownie and clever indian spiced carrot and feta muffin - so so good! Friendly service. Totally delighted.

Absolutely loved our brekky here this morning. The place was super busy but friendly staff were attentive and we got a table within five minutes. The coffee and chai was good and served promptly, and the smashed avo came on crusty bread and was a good serving size. The stand-out was the pan-friend haloumi sandwhich: crisp, squeaky haloumi, mushrooms, fresh spinach and mayo on absolutely delicious bread: a great way to start the morning! The courtyard was busy and a little squashed, but had a great vibe. Will definitely be going back!

Fantastic little spot for great coffee, breakfast & lunch. On a weekend it's a hive of activity in the kitchen and with people keen to score a seat. The breakfast options are top notch. My husband still raves about the smashed avocado.

We were lucky enough to have a weekday off recently and popped in for a late breakfast, but we were lured in by the lunch offerings. I tried the buttermilk chicken burger - it was incredibly tender, and not too big.
My partner had the beef burger which looked pretty tasty too.

Small cafe, but what it does it does well. Excellent coffee and interesting and varied food choices that often have a bit of a different twist to them. I highly recommend Bluebird.

Straight up, the girls working the floor were absolutely fantastic.
Coffee (proud mary) was a delightful start to the late breakfast.
Food was delicious and a little left of centre - nice to have something new for a change.
Look forward to a return visit.

This is our most favourite local place, too many amazing dishes to choose. The chorizo sandwich is the best hangover cure and my personal favourite, the zucchini fritters with a side of salmon! Can never go wrong here :)

The best smashed avocado ever !
The best coffee in collingwood !
Surprised last week with new decor - love sitting outside ! Amazing service - one of the best haunts in the city

This place is AMAZING. The service is fantastic, great drinks selection and the menu is too tough to choose from. I had the baked eggs and they were absolutely delicious. The Sourdough bread was great as a side as well. Have been twice now and both times have been thoroughly impressed. Will be back!

Started off with a Chai tea, it was made perfectly! Then for breakfast I got the toasted cornbread. YOU MUST TRY THIS DISH! It was so tasty.

Great tasting coffee, awesome service and good food! I always try new places to have brunch. I ordered the speck and peas! I love the taste of it. The eggs were perfectly poached, the bread was yum too. The only downside is the speck, it was rubbery. The flavours was there but it was tough meat! Overall it was a pleasant experience! Worth the visit!

HANDSDOWN the best smashed avo in Melbourne. Everything else on the menu's quite heavily spiced which is nice and different in a way!! Not much indoor seats but the outdoor area's chill and spacious!! So good!!

Had a delicious breakfast this morning at Bluebird, the staff were pleasant and attentive. The smashed avocado, with an egg and bacon was on point with the perfect balance of mint, avocado and feta cheese. I also had the raspberry, apple and mint crush, which is a drink that would be the perfect compliment to a warm summers day.

We stumbled across Bluebird Espresso by accident as we were stuck in traffic on Johnston Street one morning. Bubs and I were on our brunch roulette mission and decided to just stop and check out this cute little cafe. . It's a cosy little space and well loved by the locals. It seemed quite popular and space is limited so a big pram may be difficult.
Hungry Hippo
Went here for breakfast today before a training course. Great breakfast selection and very good service. The french toast was yummy and the hot chocolate was delicious! Another plus was that they split the bill (was there with a group of 7). Would come back again if I was in the area.

Bluebird Espresso has an unassuming storefront in Collingwood but judging by the wait time and significant lines, it is definitely a popular spot for brunch in the North. The decor is cute, the waitstaff hipster trendy and the dishes mouthwatering. Toasted cornbread w/ avocado, salsa fresca, poached egg & jalapeno drizzle + chorizo ($17.5 + $2.5). Though visually stunning, this wasn’t a dish to reach the upper echelons of perfection. The avocado was unfortunately slightly raw, and so was not as tasty as it could have been. The cornbread was nice, though quite dry and the salsa didn’t assist in that department.

This cafe will always hold a very special place in my heart as it was the very first cafe I ever went to for brunch in Melbourne. It was the morning after I landed in the city and my best friend took me to this gem. The ambience is quirky and the service is efficient, yet it is the down to earth-ness of this cafe that keeps me coming back for more. The food is top quality and the staff have mastered the many ways eggs can be made. The ingredients used are always fresh and the accompanying coffees never disappoint.

Cute little cafe good coffee & food. Bustling ambiance mostly over the weekend but nice and quit during the week. Also has an outdoor area & usually lots of parking nearby.

Really nice food and coffee, well priced, and friendly service. Even when they're busy and can't seat you right away (it's a small place!) they make sure you get a coffee or something while you wait. I love their menu and still find it hard to choose a dish even though I've tried everything vegetarian they have! I think my favourites are the corn fritters for savoury and the french toast when I feel like something sweet (very sweet... not recommended for diabetics lol). Even though they're a cool place they're not at all pretentious - I know I will always have a nice time at Bluebird :-) Also the back courtyard is nicely heated so you can sit out there even when it's cold.

I actually feel bad rating this place 4.5 as it is lower than there average.
In saying that they are not perfect in my eyes. They are however excellent. Never had a bad meal or a bad experience or anything bad ever happen here. It is always good. you may however need to wait for a table on saturday mornings.

I had breakfast here last weekend . The food was fast too come out and were decent portions. I got the smashed avocado and added bacon and poached eggs. The bacon was the perfect level of crunch and the poached eggs were pretty good too. Im not the biggest breakfast person but this place was a nice place to ease my hangover. The girl that served us was extremely nice too. If I go out for breakfast this place is always going too be high on my list of choices. Keep up the good work.

Good news. The ratings are accurate. Sublime service, cold water, yummy food. The only negative was that the coffee, while delicious, is served luke warm. Worth your patronage.

My favourite cafe in Melbourne. Consistently delicious food and coffee. Never had to wait in a line and the service is great. The baked eggs here are my favourite.

My absolute favorite brunch spot in Melbourne. Still searching for someone to beat it. The dukkah is absolutely amazing and the must try dish. 5.0
