Review Project Forty Nine - Collingwood

Regina Siena (resatriel)
Quiet pricey BUT the foods are awesome. Fresh sashimi. The pickle is awesome. Complexity of the dish compliment each others. Yes the foods were cold we can understand and didn’t bother us. Worth to try if you love japanese taste.

Stopped by for take away lunch. $17 for 3 pieces of chicken and veg in a small take away container. Taste was good however the price is outrageous compared to other local options. Can't recommend at that price.

A part of me wished that I could rate this place higher because honestly I can see so much potential in the food Akasiro served... but all the food was cold besides the miso soup. Bit biased cos I prefer hot-served food and understandably their intentions are to serve the food cold but that aside... The taste of the food was more on the stronger side. Strong (salty) sauce on katsu and miso too salty for my liking. The duck was the best part with their secret sauce. There were plenty of sides to add colour and variety to the main, some sides better than others but tbh, they were all pretty.. average tasting. Portions were pretty tiny for the price (healthy amount I suppose, to get to 6/10 fullness). I wouldn't complain if I was living in the area and I wanted a healthier takeaway option on the go but unfortunately a very disappointing dine-in experience this time round.

Food ok but overpriced considering the portion provided. Disappointed to the service as we were requested (instead of being asked politely) to switch table during the middle of meal :(

The restaurant model has changed since covid. Bit of a shame. I used to love coming here for a filling home cooked japanese meal. But the last few times, it's just cold takeaway bento. It's okay, but food doesn't sit quite right when it's cold or if you can't heat it up somewhere. Before, their food was hot, cooked to order, and the dining experience was superb. I don't understand why they're continuing the packed bento model. Would love to come back once they return to their homey served fresh vibe.

Delicious and beautifully presented, but a bit pricey.

Very bad experience. Just can’t imagine this quality Japanese restaurant will serve cold rice, cold meal to their customers. Very disappoint. We all understand during this difficult moment, most of the restaurants or cafe are actually having a really hard time. But this is unacceptable. I’m sorry, never coming back.

The place has changed its format most likely due to covid. They only do takeaway bentos although you can always eat at the restaurant. Regardless, the food is as good as ever!!

This is the at least the fifth time I have dined at Project 49 and I keep coming back. The food is always a highlight and tonight was no exception - orecchiette with swordfish was outstanding as was the gnocchi, both dishes being new on the menu. We drank p49 Chardonnay and a Pret-a-rouge blend, quality wines from the Beechworth region recommended by the owner.

The space is beautiful, parking is never an issue (which is remarkable for Collingwood) and for high end dining it is great value for money.

But the real reason that I keep returning is the service. Rocco in particular is such a genuine and friendly host and really makes you feel part of his family.

Project 49 is a true gem that stands out from a neighbourhood packed with quality restaurants.

Brilliant food, brilliant atmosphere. We went for the feed me option and were not disappointed at all.
7 courses that filled us up.
Coming back for sure.

Our dining experience was incredible on all levels: food was outstanding (an orgasm in your mouth), attention to detail is evident with the design and ambient of the venue and above all special mention to the service, it was like a well-orchestrated symphony of staff all working together to provide you with an overall wonderful dining experience. Cannot wait to return.

Project Forty Nine is a chic industrial paradise that is off the beaten path of Smith Street. Coming highly recommended by colleagues, I was keen to see what the fuss was about and I was not disappointed at all. Fine dining at its very best!.

This is Collingwood’s best kept secret for those in the know how foodies - focussing on high quality produce and a melting pot of flavours. The space is open and airy in a converted warehouse. The homey touches really bring it to life and bring some warmth to the space. Service is extremely friendly and attentive too with a sense of personalisation with every diner.

Unfortunately, Project 49 Restaurant wasn’t open for lunch the day we visited (they need to update their website) so we had to settle for their café & deli which was fine. A large space that to me lacked soul, however, we arrived for a late lunch so there was not a lot of folks to add to the atmosphere. Food and service both good.

Went in for dinner on a Thursday. Made a reservation that morning, which was no problem. P49 is off the main streets, which means most customers would have to know where they are going. While riding to P49 from Fitzroy, we saw many more new venues that popped up in the back streets of Collingwood. Service was friendly and genuine. Wine list is fun, with a Beechworth focus. Unfortunately a lot of the Beechworth wines were a bit out of our $$ range. All the meat is organic or bio-dynamic. We started with some small dishes and ended up being too full to take a large dish so went straight to dessert. We took mostly dishes we didn't know what they were in advance, which was a bit experimental but we enjoyed it. We had the baccala, fish sandwich, bagna cuada, cotechino to start and the cassata and rice pudding for dessert. Can't explain what everything was, but it was a nice variety and we enjoyed eating all the dishes. They brought some bread and olive oil out at the start, which was lovely. Wouldn't have minded a top-up of bread though. We enjoyed a bottle of the Pizzini Barbera with it, which was awesome especially for the price ($65). We spend A$156 for two people in total (excl. tip). Wouldn't mind going back!

Had a really gorgeous lunch here today, first class service and some really impressive dishes. For my very simple tastes the sprout side dish was a standout, have tried to perfect this myself for years and the maître Dee/owner left me with a few tips that leave me hopeful! The Salumi plate was really impressive and the silky brown wheat pasta was absolutely perfect. Short but lovely wine selection, a well chosen Gavi I should have had a bottle! Will definitely return thx for a memorable lunch !!

Drop everything. This is what you should be doing. Best food in Melbourne now.
Dined on a Tuesday evening after long weekend. Venue was quiet which I thought would lend itself to food not being as lively as it should. Instead, it felt as though the Chef was cooking just for us. We had every dish off the small plates and I can't decide which I enjoyed most.
Rilette superbly seasoned. The bisque with the raviolo nothing less than liquid gold. Zuchini salad fresh and firm but for me the winner was the stracciatella. Fresh stone fruit razer thin slices blossomed over the face of the plate. Just stunning. John Dory also worth a mention with the sea banana, samphire and an abundance of butter sauce. Happy place. Service was excellent and passionate, wine list interesting. I look forward to returning to this venue

Such a great find! Project forty nine is a hidden gem with a light airy atmosphere and a great menu. We popped in for brunch and there was more than enough space. I ordered an iced mocha and the eggplant parmigiana. They were both so good! The eggplant came with a delightful salad on the side. The menu only has a few items but they look so fancy! Absolutely lovely waiter. Would highly recommend!

Great food, wine selection and friendly service! Had the Hapuka, chicken liver parfait, octopus and some fantastic oysters on our last visit

I appreciate the large, airy, clean space. No one likes eating squished up to strangers and there's no risk of that here. Don't so much appreciate the awkward snatchy service. As for the food, when it said asparagus omelette, I expected cut up asparagus in an omelette, not an omelette with two asparagus shoved inside.

We gave P49 a try despite the relatively ho-hum reviews and super glad we made the effort; especially seeing we are huge king valley vineyard fans. P49 certainly defies the ratings and I highly recommend - It was absolutely delicious. The three starter we had were truly excellent - the grilled octopus, wallaby tartar and special scallop ceviche. I had the kangaroo for main which was again, excellent. High quality sides included too which was a bonus. The other members of the group had the fish main, whilst very good it was extremely buttery and rich. The king valley sourced wine list was fantastic. Especially the white which was from a private family cellar.

Housed in a great, modern space in Collingwood. I completely recommend and will be back.

Went here for a team lunch on a Monday. Food took a little while. Porridge was good but a little small. The nuts and warm fruit on top were perfect. Coffee is hit and miss.

Beautiful food, unpretentious service, delicious wine and gorgeous venue! Hot Tip: try the Kingfish, it is out of this world!

Make sure you check out the cafe/deli next door too!

Great food! Even better service! Space is warm and inviting in the back streets of Collingwood, great wine list too.

DO's Kingfish, octopus, celeraic, lamb & risotto!

Definitely recommend

DO: Chicken liver, kingfish, ox tongue, beef short rib and cooked lamb.

DON'T: Forget the tiramisu or panna cotta.

TIP: Drinks menu is sensational. Ask the waitress for a recommendation.

Enjoyed a Saturday night in the bar with a small group of friends. Rocco, the owner of the establishment was very welcoming and loved a chat. It was quite noisy but that was only because the place was buzzing with happy diners, which surely is a good sign. The food was amazing, the flavours were delicious and well balanced, with the carpaccio the standout for me. Project Forty Nine has a great selection of wines and Rocco knows everything there is to know about them.

Will definitely be returning.

We popped in for a quick breakfast as we'd heard good things and visited their Beechworth cafe which is lovely.

Three of us shared three different dishes and all were stunning. Smashed avocado is everywhere but rarely as good as this and the polenta dish was simply amazing. Possibly the best restaurant breakfast dish I've ever had (and I am obsessed with brekkie). Even the kale dish was beautiful and I have never ever even considered ordering kale in my life! Whoever cooks here knows what they're up to as dishes are simple but hearty and so tasty, based on choosing just the best produce.

Finally the coffees and a hot choc where as good as you can get. This place is a bit off the beaten path of brekkie hotspots but well worth the detour. Amazing.

Amazing food and even better service. Come here all the time for breakfast or a takeaway coffee. Had my first dinner there last night and it did not disappoint. My go to spot to bring friends.

Incredible Italian, lovely staff.

We spend a Sunday afternoon eating and drinking at this new collingwood establishment. The pasta of the day wasn't to my liking so I asked if they did a carbonara. Though it wasn't on the menu the chef was happy to make it. Perhaps the best carbonara I've eaten since Italy. Molto bene 👌🏻.

Delicious fresh padock to plate food, with friendly and knowledgeable waiters! Highlights were the beef carpacio, king fish sashimi and slow roasted lamb.
Gastrology
Gastrology recently attended a media preview of a new series of Plumm consumer events: Ticket to Taste. Ticket to Taste is an immersive masterclass during which attendees learn about different wine styles and how the wine glass used changes the flavour profile of the wine. The event was held at Project 49 in Collingwood, the new venue from wine educator, wine maker and sommelier, Rocco Esposito. Project 49 was an excellent backdrop for an evening that was both fun and informative.

Project 49 is tucked away in Cambridge street Collingwood but is a real find! It has a nice relaxed, friendly and warm atmosphere as you enter and the acoustics are also good. But it is the exquisite food that takes centre stage. Our group of five had a series of tasting plates which was a good way to go as it is hard to choose my favourite dish- they were all so good!!! The flavours were all fresh, balanced and yet complex. I would say it was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. The fig pannacotta was the best pannacotta I have ever experienced- it was silky and delicate in its flavour. We will definitely be back here soon. Had a wonderful night.

Stopped in here for a late lunch and was not disappointed. Good coffee, great produce and an amazing venue. The food was simple with reference to everything which is so right about Italian food. We will be back.
