Review Trang Bakery And Cafe - Collingwood

JoJo Foo
For any lover of Banh Mi you need to come to this Collingwood institution. There is a reason that Trang commands a queue of people waiting for their crispy Banh Mi delights and it's because they definitely do make one of the best, if not the best in town! From roll to home made pate / signature sauce and amazing roast pork I spot no fault in this roll and if you catch them when the bread comes out fresh and hot it's a whole other level of foodgasm for sure. Freshly baked large Banh Mi rolls all at a very affordable $10 alongside stuffed to the brim with their signature crispy crunchy and tasty roast pork is a must try. With plenty of other tasty options to try.

Crispy pork banh mi roll was great, very fulfilling. Vietnamese iced coffee was good too. Quick service condisering it's busy. Recommended for sure.

I tried their crispy pork belly banh mi and it was the best I’ve tasted so far, it was so flavoursome and the meat was so juicy. Their chicken schnitzel roll was really good too. Despite going there later in the afternoon, the quality of their meats was still very fresh.

Easily the best Bahn mi in Melbourne $10 for crispy pork

Super quick service in this very busy cafe. My crispy pork roll was very good, and this place does not hold back on spice which is excellent. The ingredients were fresh although the pork was cold, and the bun dry. My partners vegan chicken roll was good too. Overall this was a solid experience.

Probably some of the best Vietnamese rolls I have ever had. The staff were also super lovely as well! Definitely would recommend

Super delicious food, Vietnamese coffee to die for and super fast service. We had one crispy pork banh mi and one trang special roll. Best pork roll we’ve had for a while!

Love Bahn Mi here but find it a bit pricey. Taste hits the mark and they do yummy vermicelli salads etc

I generally like to think that I’m an aficionado of the Melbourne Banh Mi, and I have to say that this bakery is the bakery of choice. Do yourself a favour and get a crispy pork roll. They always load up the salad, and the pork is always tender and delicious. If you’re feeling like you need to see pure energy, grab a Vietnamese iced coffee as well; you’ll be super productive for the rest of the day.

Had the lemongrass tofu Banh mi on a wholemeal roll. Had plenty of salads it. Tofu was ok, couldn’t really taste the lemongrass. The roll was a little dry, but at $6.50 it was good value.

The food is amazing and even though there’s pretty much always a queue out the door, it doesn’t take long to walk in and out with a delicious pork roll or a bowl of fried rice and a steamed pork bun. The pork crackling is outstanding and all the food is always super fresh and wonderful. Highly recommend.

Although it may look unassuming, the food here is the best Vietnamese in the area in my opinion. The banh mi rolls are always stuffed full, it is such great value for money! The fried rice and dim sims are also tasty and good value.

I'm obsessed with Trang, one of the only bahn mi shops I'm aware of that offers such a range of mock meat. I love all options, but the chicken and pork are two favourites. Definitely add chilli and peanuts. Their spring rolls are also great and service is always friendly/prompt.

YUM! Trang is well known in the area for their Banh mi’s (GET THE BBQ PORK!) in conjunction with N Lee and Sunny’s just up Smith street. All are equally delicious with their little unique tweaks though Trang’s BBQ pork is the best I’ve had in the neighbourhood. Don’t bother getting their steamed buns and dim sims as they are pretty bland and dry. Stick to their Banh mi
The City Lane
Trang Bakery & Cafe is a Vietnamese bakery in Collingwood that sells a small selection of Vietnamese delights, that’s developed somewhat of a cult following for its banh mi.
Hungry For Chips
One of the best bánh mì's I had in Melbourne. Someone said it's a bit on the expensive side ($8 for a crispy pork roll), but we say hell no. This is worth every penny. It is packed full of flavour - sweetness from the coleslaw, saltiness from the pate, crunch from peanuts and fried onions (?). So good. Highlights: Pure deliciousness. Lowlights: Was a rather messy experience but the pigeons outside had a feast.
Yeah bloody good Bahn mi. Can’t wait to eat more from here, very good value for many and just totally delicious ya know. I love the 4 vegan options

Great Vietnamese pork role with a huge amount of salad and internal fillings to satisfy any hungry diner. This place will be a destination point to grab a role in conjunction with some shopping at the remaining outlets. Huge variety of choices as well.

Great value for money. Has become a lunch staple for us, even though there are 100+ food places between where we are in Northcote and Smith st Fitzroy. Special pork, BBQ pork, Crispy pork rolls for between $6.50 and $7.50 highly recommended.

Dropped by for a quick bite for breakfast. Staff were friendly and decor was simple. Ordered the crispy pork. Flavours are not quite the same as you'll find in most Vietnamese bakeries but it was delicious nontheless. Although the price is abit higher than the norm, but this is Collingwood! Would recommend to friends.

Had a crispy pork roll and it was delicious - seating is pretty basic on the footpath. Staff are friendly and if you're vegan they have options for you. Recommend!

The eggplant tempura is delicious, crispy but not oily. There's a good mix of fresh salad ingredients in there too.
The vegan doughnut wasn't great, had a very weird texture that was difficult to bite into.
Haven't had a chance to try the vegan prawn and didn't see it on the menu anymore, unfortunately.

Even a sudden destructive hailstorm couldn't keep me away from vegan roast duck banh mi. I'd just learnt that banh mi meant I could eat Vietnamese food in a bread roll for breakfast. Genius.

Just got back from Vietnam last month, Vietnamese roll at Trang Bakery are the real deal! Loved it, will definitely be back. We had the special Trang pork roll with all the trimmings, crispy, tasty, fresh and totally addictive.
TravisV
One of those classic bakery's that are run by the same family for years. The rolls are really fresh and you can't go wrong for lunch for one of their pork rolls.
Dimzib
This place makes very good banh mi which are jam-packed with flavour. The ingredients used in their banh mi are also distinct from others that may be found throughout Melbourne CBD or in surrounding areas; this provides a more unique flavour to their food. The only reason why this place was not given a higher rating is due to their overpricing. While the food may be tasty and popular here, it is certainly not worth the price for those simply craving a banh mi - there are cheaper, better places to go.

Cravings for a Vietnamese bread roll kicked in while I was down in Fitzroy, luckily Trang Bakery was not too far.

I orderer their Crispy Pork Roll and the service was super fast to get it ready. First bite and I knew that I was not in Footscray but in Fitzroy, as the flavours were more 'westernised' than what I am used to.

Having said so, smart on them as it is a business/market decision and at the end of the day, it was still very tasty and filling.

Overall, not super authentic but really tasty, only negative was the quantity of the butter.

V E G A N O P T I O N S ✔️
We tried the vegan "duck" banh mi, it was SO good!
Also tried the lemongrass tofu banh mi which was also really good with a less intense flavour hit.
The Vego spring rolls are amazing and everything was SO bloody cheap! It's now on my list for Melbourne's best vegan eats!

Up there in terms of the best banh mi I’ve had in town, and probably one that feels a lot more authentic and traditional. From the shop front it hardly looks like much with a typical deli-style fit out, however the queues out the door suggest you’re in for a real treat. Today in Victoria it’s Grand Final Eve (that’s a thing now) and it was serving patrons as normal when I went in for my second lunch.
Michael
No joke, best Banh Mi I've had in Melbourne. Staff working there are extremely friendly, with plenty of smiles. Had to hold myself back from getting another.
Eliza B.
Excellent banh mi. Expensive compared to St Albans but need to account for Collingwood rents. High turnover so always fresh including the chilli!
Leah
A fresh, vibrant menu serving traditional vietnamese cafe favourites alongside a great variety of fragrent vegetarian and vegan options. Friendly staff, great value for money and lively location in Camberwell's fresh food market make this place a winner.

Went to the bakery in Camberwell. I had the Bahn Mi with roast pork. So fresh. Crunchy roll. Delicious! Located right near Camberwell market- perfect spot for a cheap and delicious lunch after your shopping. Generous size and only $6.

Get serious and get some trang inya! My wife is on the hunt for the perfect Bahn mi and this place certainly took her fancy. We both had a pork crackle roll and were delighted at the plump morsels of pork that filled the bun. The point of difference was a lovely mayonnaise through it. I was a little sad that they didn't lather on any pate' but I will live... And live I did. Every bite was like a mouthful sent from the Bahn mi heaven. Get there

This review is about Trang Bakery in Camberwell as there is no Zomato for that one. I went here when I was in Camberwell and I felt like a banh mi. I got the trang special which was BBQ pork and some pork sausage thing. It was different to other banh mis because they added cabbage, lettuce and peanuts. It smelt like 5 spice in the shop which was nice. My banh mi was yummy I liked the flavour in the meat and the addition of peanuts however it could've done with more meat especially since I'm paying $6. I might still travel to Springvale when I'm craving a really good banh mi. The guy working in the shop was really friendly which is a nice change.

I was in Smith St today and I happened to be across the road from Trang Bakery so I went in to compare to Camberwell. I got the pork meatball roll. It was strange when the lady was serving it she put some other pork thing in instead but I didn't say anything because it looked as good as the meatballs. When she realised she took it out and put the meatballs in. It was just as nice as the one in Camberwell and I liked the lemongrass flavour of the meatballs. It would be better if they were less sweet. I found the lady working here a bit cold especially after being served by the nice man in Camberwell.

Trang will hardly win awards for design and aesthetics - a single front shop fit with virtually the entire space taken up by the servery and little kitchen. There's a couple of stools inside or, if you're lucky and not wanting takeaway, you can snag one of the tables outside on Smith St.

But the bahn mi are truly fabulous and the crispy pork special (just $7) out of this world. One of the best ever. The baguette is loaded up with salad and veggies with generous amount of pork and crispy crackling. But there's plenty of other options - from chicken schnitzel to eggplant tempura.
DuckieLovesToEat
I ordered the BBQ pork bahn mi for takeaway here. After reading good reviews I had high expectations on this place. Unfortunately, I can't say the same thing. It was good but it could have been better. I had far more delicious bahn mi in Victoria St than this place. Sadly, I can't say I will go back again.

This is the worst restaurant takeaway in Smith St
The rolls they sell, I ask no Cabbage, get roll back to work to start eating and no green cabbage but there was red cabbage, WTF Cabbage is cabbage.
Last time I bought a roll the tiniest bit of cucumber and 3 pieces of chicken
SHAME on you, your food and service has declined over the last few months.
Everyone go up the road to Sunny Bakery or the other one across from the ANZ better food better service. You have lost my business
Ben Milroy
Quite simply the best banh mi in Melbourne. Hands down. No line is too long to justify getting one of these packets of pure gold. Gluten free options is a great bonus for some

This place is the bloody best. I'm drooling just thinking about it. Long lines at lunch but it moves super quickly and is well worth the short wait.
LoveMyCake
My go to cheap eat. The usual Banh Mi offerings but done really well. The bread is fresh and crunchy. Fillings (especially the pork) are great value.

This place is my new favourite cheapy local. The service is so sweet, and they start to remember your order very quickly once you've been a few times. The food is excellent. Unbelievable value, though it can take a while to be served if there are a few people there. I guess all those tasty ingredients take a while to be put into place on the roll! Without a doubt one of Melbourne's best cheap eats.

Crispy pork roll hands down the best in Melbourne!!!!!! The pork is so perfectly cooked and so packed full of ingredients. Don't change the menu prices ever please🙏

I’ve been to Trang six times this year and have so far failed to blog about it. Five of those times have been at the Smith St shop and the one other time was at the new shop in the city in Hardware Street. A review is well overdue. I love banh mi, I make them at home and I eat them out whenever I have the chance, so I’ve eaten a lot of them. I’m prepared to call these the best banh mi I’ve eaten.

Inconsistent portions. First time we got it great portion. Second time okay portion. Third time cld only taste the bread barely any hint of veggies or tofu. If the dwindling portions are to do with the mounting popularity... We will have to ditch this place very soon :(

Trang Bakery and Cafe - Crispy Pork Bánh Mì. Work colleagues were going for a lunch round to this place. I ordered Crispy Pork Bánh Mì. It was so delicious and was full. Have that crunch that I loved. The only bad thing is that it would be great if they could have less fat. Worth $6.50 for a delicious Bánh Mì!

Comparison to N Lee Bakery. I've been an N Lee regular for a few years but have heard a buzz about Trang and tried it for the first time today. Took the advice and went the crispy pork plus all the optional trimmings.
My verdict / first impression;
Fillings, crackling, pork, salad = great. Crackling is crispy but not crunchy, perfect. Salad was fresh, could have used some more chilli perhaps.
The bread roll itself = unfortunately falls short compared to N Lee. The strength of N lee is the contrast of the delectable crispness of the outer side with the fluffy softness of the inside. Trang I'm afraid was soft from the inside out, no contrast or crisp, the outer layer was sadly lacking. A shame as the interior of the roll has a lot going for it.
That said N lee holds it's own in terms of interior flavour, the pate, coriander, chilli etc, it packs a lot of punch in that area as well.
It should be noted that I've since been told that a good option at Trang is to add fried shallots, I think I'll give it one more chance add those as well.

Bun [Rice Vermicelli]. Healthy, delicious and filling option for a cheap price!

Best vegan duck banh mi in Melbourne looooove

Iced coffee and a roll is awimmer. There was a bit of a queue when I arrived but the friendly and very efficient staff made short work of it. A crispy pork roll and a Vietnamese iced coffee came to $10.50. Not the cheapest on this street but both were delicious and measured by quality to price were excellent value. .

Smith Streets' finest!. Best pork rolls in Smith St! Great menu! Forget N.Lee and forget Sunny's. There can only be one. Trang!! And now they have a store in the cbd! Well done guys business is booming!

The crispy pork roll is to die for! The bread is fresh and delicious and the lady behind the counter is such a sweet heart. Will definitely be back

Too good, literally, now the lineups are so epic I have to go to my second favourite lunch spot Momo. Momo is ace though.

The best. This is number one in Melb, forget your others.

Have been to this place before and had the Banh Mi - and let me just say, the new crispy pork rolls are one of the best I have ever eaten! Freshly made, fresh ingredients, yummy pork and crackling- would recommend over any other Vietnamese bakery in this area.

A crispy pork a day, keeps the doctor away!. The absolute epitome of sub/rolls.
Having tried other bakeries in Melbourne, this is by far the best I have ever had. The Crispy Pork really is a bang for your buck, its perfect proportion of meat to salad definitely hits the spot. Trang Bakery is not just a one hit wonder with their Crispy Pork but also produces great Rice Paper Rolls/Combination Rolls. Staff are also very friendly and enthusiastic. With an extensive scrumptious list its hard to choose what I want every time I go.

Overall I am certainly impressed with their consistent performance every time I come here.
Strongly recommended!
10/10

Amazemeatballs. Having recently travelled around Vietnam and eating many banh mi, this was the best pork roll I have ever eaten. Peanuts are the best. Very happy.

The absolute freaking best. The end.

Porky goodness.... Had a great crispy pork roll here today. Roll was good, roasted pork with crackling was heavenly and accompanying salad was crunchy and fresh with zingy chilli and lip-smacking sauce. Best $6 bucks spent.

Was good, now bad.... I am sad. My favourite lunch place has gone down hill in a very short period of time. Today I ordered the usual, from a young girl who has never served me before. I watched my bread roll being chosen from a basket at the side, not the normal space. It was really brown, like burnt, and asked if it was burnt, was told no.

I paid and left. I got home, and the roll was burnt, and the chicken was all skin, with very little meat.

I tried to call, but all then numbers I tried were not answering or disconnected.

Very Sad, another good place goes bad.....
Sam
Very disappointing... Don't bother. I drove past Trang Bakery today and had a quick look online to see if it was any good before stopping in for lunch.

I ordered a Vietnamese pork roll and it is one of the worst I've had. Not a traditional pork roll at all, this contained lots of raw onion as well as mayonnaise, and fatty, tasteless BBQ pork. The bread was tough and not crunchy like it should be.

I'm not sure why I decided to order a coffee but I don't recommend you do the same. The milk used is Homebrand UHT cartons, horrible.

Won't be going back again.
Leesa
Disappointing 2nd time around. I have been here twice in the past few months. The first time was amazing. I had the spring rolls and the vietnamese bread roll with the pork balls.

Second time round was horrible. The spring rolls had turned from traditional pork spring rolls to something very un-meaty. I ordered the vietnamese bbq pork bread roll and had a roll filled to the brim with veggies (too much cabbage and red onion) and 3 thin slices (diameter of a 20c coin) of pork topped with peanuts. There was so little meat that you wouldn't even notice if it was there or not. I understand cost-cutting but this was taking it to the extreme.

I'd be reluctant to go again based on this experience. Perhaps it was just an off day.

Best rice paper rolls on smith st. Been here a couple of times since it opened... Had a lemongrass tofu salad roll which was OK, however it was a 44 degree day so the bread had dried and gone very crusty, definitely not their fault. Their Vietnamese iced coffees really hit the spot and their rice paper rolls (had the tofu) are the best I've tried on Smith St. Worth the extra $2 compared to competitors. The staff are also really friendly... definitely a new favourite lunch spot!
Jack
The girls are very friendly. And the rolls are filled to the brim and are quite nice. They have some nice interesting combination rolls
