Review Cromwell Streat - Collingwood

Edwar Kartio
What a great initiative by the business to hire people who want to have hospitality experience. Initially we thought the service would be horrible but we are surprised by how friendly and fast the service is. The food was great too! The broth on the Udon noodle was tasty, light and perfect for cold weather. There is plenty of space indoors and outdoors. Food - 8 Service - 9 Vibe - 10 Price - $$

What a beautiful building and space! When we arrived it was a cold and gloomy, hence choosing to sit indoors, however given the chance, we would have definitely chosen to sit outside their cute courtyard. Coffee was on point that I also had one to takeaway. The Spanish eggs were delicious and cooked to perfection. I liked that they made their own bread and have a bakery on site too. Staff were also so welcoming and friendly. Glad to have found this little gem in Collingwood and would be back for sure.

I never really had brunch before but this place blew my expectations out of the water. I had the chickpea breakfast and it was perfect, so much attention to detail, lovely earthy flavours. The staff were attentive and friendly. The garden area they have is also really special. Give this place a try, you will not regret

Streat is excellent! The beautiful outside seating area was like a haven on a 32 degree day and while sipping on an exquisitely sweet squeezed orange juice I took in the fusion brunch menu. My partner and I decided on Son in Law eggs (crumbed fried egg) and the Streat Breakfast(have a look at the skillet dish in the photos. The 5 stars says it all. I capped off the indulgence with a Tiger Iced Coffee - condensed milk goodness and strong coffee that was just overindulgence after the food but I couldn't help it. We are gonna keep coming back Streat folk!

Tucked away in this street is a little café haven that's worth telling your friends about. The menu isn't huge but there were so many exciting options it took us awhile to decide. We all chose something different but soon there was only silence punctured by exclamations of yums and oohs. My Son in Law eggs was a buffet for the taste buds, from the tart pickled veggies and mildly spicy chilli relish to the fluffy roti, sticky rice noodle and of course the sensational eggs themselves. My friends totally loved their pork croquettes, Japanese breakfast bowl and corn fritters - we were the clean plates table. The courtyard feels relaxed, like we were chilling in someone's beautiful backyard. The whole space felt airy, bright and inviting.Staff were super friendly and even let us split the bill. Not the first nor the last visit.

From the delivery of catered lunch by Brian (with his tasty brownie off cut treats) to the presentation, quality of food and variety Streat will now, if they are happy to cater all our work functions. Thanks for making our work Christmas lunch delicious Streat. The Team at Fisher Lane Mobility Abbotsford.

The best local in Collingwood for sure! Helps people out too.. can't go wrong with these guys!

Cafe with a conscience. Best selection of take-away items in the area especially since they revamped their sandwiches recently. The milk bread with chicken is mouthwatering just to look at let alone enjoy. Large variety of drinks and food, and you best go-to in the area for a later afternoon snack.
Quince And Cheese
Really nice coffee, space and service. This social enterprise cafe/bakery/roastery feels like an oasis amidst the industrial warehouse area of Collingwood/Abbotsford. My soy flat white was perfect.

One of the best cafes I’ve visited so far and the atmosphere of streat, wow 😍

FOOD & COFFEE: I ordered the ‘Mochi Donuts’ and a soy latte and both items were perfect! The mochi donuts were so unique and so so good! The mandarins were such an amazing tart flavour, the mochi donuts had the absolute BEST texture (tbh i was afraid they might be soggy but they were so crispy on the outside and perfectly chewy on the inside), the miso caramel was such a unique and GENIUS combination bcs it was sweet with a slightly savoury umami flavour and the freeze dried mandarins were like honeycombs but 10000x times better! Truly one of the most unique, delicious and special brunch dishes I’ve ever had! The coffee was also phenomenal and one of the best I’ve ever had! It was brewed to perfection and had a perfectly nutty flavour and together with the creamy soy milk, I was IN LOVE!

SERVICE: Service here is amazing! They’re really friendly and super chill. I also appreciated them not pushing for more coffee despite me staying there for quite abit ❤️

AMBIENCE: I usually am chill with ambience but I have to give them major props for their beautiful cafe. Even when you’re inside, you’re gifted with being able to see the beautiful garden that they have and they have free wifi so students, I fully recommend STREAT!

Overall, I absolutely loved Streat and would definitely come back for their other dishes and their lovely cafe + service! It’s student friendly, has amazing food and phenomenal coffee. I cannot complain in any way. Collingwood is definitely an area with some of the best cafes I’ve ever visited and Streat is no exception!

Nestled on Cromwell Street, Streat is home to a bakery, restaurant and coffee roaster. Each representing a different arm the Streat family.

But we're hear to talk about the important stuff, the food and a little about the coffee.

Offering a range of asian inspired food as well as some traditional favourites, pastries and other snacks like pies and sausage rolls.

The food is good and the staff are welcoming they like to get to know you and remember you when you come back.

Our favourite is their breakfast, their bacon and eggs while it sounds standard is a real treat.

Team that with their coffee thats roasted in house these a great place to come for breakfast and lunch.

LOVED IT. 10/10 had a brilliant brunch experience here. Went for a birthday treat with a group of friends and cheekily didn't book but they were amazing. Last minute table for 8 plus kid, menu was subperb and really interesting. Loved the Japanese breakfast plate, so much flavour and really great size. (Not a fan of food waste) these guys nailed it. Everyone was happy with there food.

Coffee was delicious and we took home some sweet treats from the bakery. They do all this and they are a massive movement in social change, with there cafe, bakery & catering all helping out youth & the community. You should absolutely check them out, city or Collingwood. 💯 worth it.

Hard to find but once you find it, it will be a great experience with delicious and healthy options for all who are dining. Love the green interior and garden feel.
Daniel Wirjoprawiro
Great social enterprise cafe in Collingwood tucked away from the buzz. Very spacious and green with a lovely outdoor area. Highly recommended!
Hey Mayolicious
Love the environment filled with plants 🌱 and the wooden rustic interior. The seats were nicely placed facing the garden. Very well thought. I ordered the Streat Breakfast 🍳 (Baked Eggs), it would be perfect for me if it’s served with chunky chorizo instead of bits. Croque Madame was lovely 😊. Staffs are friendly and attentive.

My Key Three-Pointers
* Spacious and available for function hire
* Coffee roaster, bakery, and delicious food
* Large outdoor space also available

I use to have a customer directly opposite this beautiful white building referred to as the Cromwell Manor. I would be intrigued by what was behind those doors and often watched many people walk in and out. For the first time, I walked through those doors and had a moment of thinking I wonder how much of this place got a makeover. It felt a tad strange eating in a place that was once a brothel. It now serves a different purpose and the food I had was yummy. I had a ricotta roll and the pastry was super golden and flaky and the filling extremely tasty. I loved loved the coffee. I sat inside but it felt like I was seated outside, bright green and simplistic.

The downside, which is no fault of the cafe is parking has become a nightmare in Collingwood. If you are a local walk and if you are driving be prepared to do laps.

A gorgeous oasis tucked away in Collingwood, with perfect coffee, delicious food and a great cause. The outside garden is a tranquil, relaxing spot for catching up with friends over a coffee or drink.
Kate
Our local! Great coffee and bakery! My favourite part of my weekend is having a coffee in the beautiful garden and relaxing in the sun! Amazing!!
AH
The food here is always great, but what really makes it is the lovely staff. They all go above and beyond, which really separates STREAT from other cafes in Melbourne.
Dan
STREAT is the perfect place to take time out of the everyday hustle and bustle and just embrace the sunshine and unwind. It has a spacious outdoor garden area which is really inviting. There’s an in-house bakery so the smell of fresh breads and pastries leaves you salivating. Only downside I would say is that the sandwiches and fresh breads were on the expensive side. Coffee was delicious which is all the counts.
Kevin Malone
Lovely space! The garden is a great spot on clear days. Coffee is always spot on and the chai is delicatable too. The Japanese chicken salad is definitely a favourite. Prices are steep but hey, this is Melbourne, and STREAT is a nonprofit dedicated to training disadvantaged youth. Also something to keep in mind when you're at Cromwell STREAT or their other sites - You may be served by a trainee doing their very best! Please be patient with them.
Rifan Thamrin
The food in this place is pretty good. Quite easy to find too. The only downside for me is that all the sandwiches are a bit too pricey. But definitely get some of their sweets from the counter, they are yummy!
Clare
What an amazing venue! Light, bright, large and spacious. Several different areas, definitely kid friendly with multiple high chairs, kids menu and children’s area full of toys.
This would be great for functions I think but we really enjoyed a Sunday lunch. The food options were diverse and really tasty. I had the mushroom perogi, my husband had the beef and the sides were tasty too. Definitely somewhere I’d I would recommend having this repaired and can arrange upon your instruction to people. Not just a great venue for the food and atmosphere but social justice aspect too. Can’t wait to come back!
Vanessa
First off all, I’m just going to state the huge challenge of trying to find parking around this area! And if you’re lucky to score a 1-hour parking spot nearby, hopefully you can make it in and out of this place in time. After driving around the area for 20 minutes, we finally found a parking one block away. Once we stepped inside, we weren’t sure if we were supposed to wait or just sit at a table. We chose to do the latter… Luckily, table service came by soon after and staff were friendly. Service was slow overall - from the time waiting to order our food, to the time the food and drinks came out. On any other given day, I wouldn’t mind this slow-pace because the cafe’s environment is one that’s encourages you to enjoy your surroundings (greenery and sunlight - perfect ambience)… But once our food did come out, we only had 10 minutes to gulp down the big-portion of food that we had ordered. All this aside, we did appreciate the food presentation as well as the taste of the food. The wagyu beef & pork mince in the ‘Macanese spicy kimchi’ was on the salty side. The soft bread with egg was a nice touch though. What was surprising was the small bowl filled with something that looked like fried onions. We later found out that it was some sort of chopped chilli as it was SO spicy! (It’s probably a good idea to let diners know that that’s a bowl of chilli just in case they can’t handle a mouthful of it) :P Meanwhile, the ’Stuffed Arepa’ was delicious. Filled with different flavours and textures, all the ingredients worked well together: white corn flatbread, corn pudding, roast pumpkin etc… The drinks we ordered were delicious as well (orange juice and a cappuccino).

Love the concept behind this place and the food was great too. Ordered the venison meatballs and fat chips w/ spicy jap mayo and both were delicious. Atmosphere and staff were nice too.

Cromwell Streat's history is as fascinating as their menu and their efforts to do a bit for the ecosystem. Ask them and they should be glad to tell you the history.

We loved the decor of this cafe that's massive. Ordered Almond Croissants, Sichuan flavored Eggplant and Slow Cooked Brisket together with our usual coffee and hot chocolate. Wow, what contrasting flavors of those two dishes ordered. Robust sichuan flavored eggplant was delicious. And subtle flavors of spice from the brisket was delectable. We totally loved it. Attendants are very helpful and accommodating. Definitely returning !!
SunPW
Came here with my dog and kid. We love the outdoor seating with a lot of natural sun light. There is also a small garden next to the restaurant where the kids can run around. Food is good especially the bread roll and sourdough which are very fresh and tasty. They do not have kids menu but they can do half serve of the scramble eggs.
Fin
A cute and comfortable little spot with amazing people and food with a twist. We ordered the homemade crumpets and son in law eggs - I definitely recommend the homemade crumpets, such a great balance of flavours although keep in mind it is not a light dish. I love everything about what this cafe stands for and will definitely be back :)
Brunny Girl
A regular stop for coffee or a forgotten breakfast on the way to work. Coffee can be good, but the Cherry slice today tasted stale. Somewhere to buy freshly baked bread is a welcome addition to the area. And there is always room for another social enterprise cafe in Melbourne.
Ray
Hidden away behind Hoddle street, this cafe has an amazing atmosphere with really nice areas for seating. Love the rustic building with a modern twist. The staff are really friendly and the food was great. The business does great work for homeless youth and it's such a positive reason to keep coming back.
Cromwell streat is located in a manor with an outdoor garden, hanging plants, a kids area with toys and books, a large menu with so many delicious looking options that are priced well.

We came here around 12.30 and for a table straightaway. We sat close to the window so we could get some sun but not the outdoor chill. I got the son in law eggs which were two poached eggs covered in sweet chilli jam with a small serving of coconut cream covered veggies (baby corn and beans) with a Malaysian roti. Delicious but overly sweet dish. Eggs were great. Not a substantial dish but for 17 dollars good value. No hurries vibe. Friendly staff and split bills accepted.

Can't wait to try more of the menu.

Great coffee, nice breakfast food and cool atmosphere. I also like that they are helping out youngsters in need. Staff are nice - can get a bit busy.

Rocked in for a late lunch around 2.30pm Monday. The place had a good energy. Quiet, but nice natural light in a spacious interior.
I had the haloumi beetroot fritters ( glutenfree) with poached egg , cinammon butter , sorrel , raddicio and carrot hummus.
Delicious . Perfectly poached egg, pickled and bitter raddicio with the carrot hummus. Nice balance . The fritters could have been a little more 'haloumi', but were light and nice nevertheless.

The cinammon butter was light and delicious but a little sweet, it was kind of misplaced as a whole on the plate as it was more a savoury dish.
Overall presentaion of both dishes was fantastic , almost too pretty to eat.

Coffee was brilliant.

This is my new fav social enterprise cafe to go to. Excellent experience and highlight on this gloomy Monday . 🙌🏻😍
Best to walk here as car parking around this part of Collingwood can be a challenge but once you get over that minor inconvenience you will find a truly melbournian food hub. Groovy fit out, lovely well priced eclectic menu, a beaut bakery, a social conscience and great coffee. This is what we love about our Melb food scene. 👍

Just discovered STREAT and have already been back again. The autumn mushrooms were divine, with my companion suffering food envy, although her eggs were also wonderful.
Lovely sunny indoor area and delightful courtyard well protected from the wind.

Staff (some being trained) were a tiny bit nervous but extremely accommodating and helpful. Highly recommend as a great place to meet friends for coffee, brunch or lunch.

I've never had to wait longer for a take-away coffee in anywhere in Australia than I have at STREAT on multiple occasions. Fairly welcoming and well-thought out space, but I have no interest in trying the food as the quality of the service is just not up to it. And the coffee isn't good.

11 of us for a work lunch on Friday. We didn't book but they were able to accommodate us. We were given the lunch menu but I had read breakfast went till 3pm. We were told for a table over 8, we couldn't normally have both menus but they were happy to accommodate this for us. The yoghurt that came with the muesli was yum! The muesli itself however was bland and from a packet. Everyone at the table were happy with the meals especially the hot chips!
Serena D
The coffee is consistently delicious, the staff are always very friendly. It would just be great to see more vegan options on their menu or in the display case (other than a chia pudding).
Spiral Stairs
Nice looking space, but the food doesn't match I'm afraid. The prices are a bit on the high side as well, so it all adds up to us not eating here again any time soon.

A fan of Life Cykel mushrooms, on a recent visit to Melbourne from Queensland, I visited Streat inCromwell St. Collingwood on the recommendation of Life Cykel to try their mushrooms. Was totally impressed with the atmosphere, the friendliness & helpfulness of the staff & above all, the food experience. I tried the autumn mushrooms with polenta - absolutely delicious! And, to top off the experience, on reading the menu, I was so impressed with what Streat is about - helping young people who need a hand - Healthy Self, Job & Home and was intrigued by the interesting story on the back of the menu about Madame Hazard. Melbournians & tourists like me - well worth a visit or two!

Cromwell Streat cafe is located in the Cromwell street which is not the main street in the Collingwood area. The location wise is quite hidden and it will be difficult to find it if you are not familiar in this area.

The interior was really well designed, many plants which make it more comfortable to have breakfast and coffee in the morning. The ambience was very comfortable and relax; The music wasn't too loud also the customer service was great and friendly.

Ordered take away coffee from this cafe *mocha for $3.80. The price for a coffee is slightly cheaper than average brunch places. The quality / taste of the coffee was really great, it was a good deal.
We really enjoyed having coffee in this cafe; They were pretty generous to provide free bread tasting in the small cup close to the counter and the bread (sourdough) was fresh.

They offer a loyalty card for coffee lovers, when you have collected 5 stamps, you can claim a free coffee to give it away to community (homeless people) which is great thing to do.

Definitely come back to try the breakfast / lunch.

Service : 4.5
Speed : 3.5
Taste : 4.0
Price : 3.5
Single origin : 👎

Yay : Coffee was great, free bread tasting near the counter, ambience was fantastic
Nay : N/A

Food was pretty poor, menu is average. Probably wouldn't go back. The service was pretty bad too, didn't like the staff's dismissive attitude. Took a good 15min to get a menu after being seated. Wanted to order from the lunch menu, but because it was 11.15am and their kitchen is 'pretty strict' we had to wait anther 15min to order. The place was empty, so can't imagine the kitchen was crazy busy from breakfast orders. Tried to order additional coffees but they never came... The fit-out is beautiful, though that doesn't alone make it a destination in my books. With other great brunch venues in the area, can't image I'll be back here anytime soon.

Having only recently 'discovered' Streat, this will undoubtedly become a local as it's so close to us. There's not many cafes/restaurants in Collingwood that have outdoor seating - especially in such a garden setting as this one! And indoors is designed to maximise the benefits of the courtyard - big, airy open space with lots of natural light.

Coffee is excellent as are the pastries (the croissants - plain, almond, chocolate - divine and made on the premises). Yet to try the main breakfast or lunch/brunch menus - that'll come!

Food is basically divine - whatever you have! Images below are the Pork & kimchi broth with silken tofu, rice cakes, enoki & shimeji mushrooms and vegetables// Mochi donuts with miso caramel, mandarin curd, yuzu sesame and freeze-dried mandarin// StrEAT breakfast which is their version of the Middle Eastern Shakshouka - chickpeas and chorizo replacing the tomatoes with the baked eggs. Unbelievable! And not only the food fabulous, but as a social enterprise, so supporting a good cause.

Where to start? An amazing space, food tastes awesome, coffee is excellent, meat is free range, other items are baked on site and locally sourced and all this for a great cause training young people. Social Enterprise needs all the support it can get. Get on board STREAT :D
Sk
I love this place. Nice relaxed open outdoor area. Nice to see dogs and children welcome here. And toys/books for kids! Rare to find a kid-friendly place in collingwood. Neighbouring cafes ( like All Press) don't even have high chairs. Thanks Streat, for welcoming families. Food delicious!
Simplyj
Delicious wholesome food in a generous serving size, unpretentious yet thoughtfully decorated and relaxing indoor/ outdoor environment, plus artisan bakery on site. What more can one ask from a cafe?!
I. D.
Went here for the second time. Service was very lovely. Food was delicious. All meat is free range! :) We thought portion size was a bit small (e.g. we had a big breakfast and didn't think it was that big) but when we had a chat to one of the people there who said most people couldn't finish it. Lovely spot and good cause.
Jo
I loved this cafes design and courtyard. The coffee is great and the beetroot and haluomi hash was delicious. Well done for not just having great food but doing your bit to make Melbourne a better place!
Foodism
I love the place. it's so well run and is such an amazing space, but for me it's the food that makes it something special.

I had Breakfast with a group of 14 and between us I think we sampled the whole menu. Everyone loved their choices and I managed to get a taste of nearly everything ordered.

I had the son-in-law eggs with a side of chorizo, which I thought was the perfect breakfast

The staff were great and managed our large booking easily.

I went back for lunch a couple of weeks later and had the roast chicken sandwich for my lunch....sat in the garden with my excellent sandwich .

What a great space to have such great food!
Ray Tsai
Coffee is great and the venue is lovely on a sunny day. I like their chicken sandwich, the vegetarian one is a bit greasy. Haven't tried the food on menu but will give it a go next time
EatMeMelbourne
I really wanted to like this place because I live locally and would love somewhere to take my little one, and the outdoor space here would be perfect for her to get busy in! But the food was just quite underwhelming. Melbourne's brunch market is so competitive and with Three Bags Full and Proud Mary just a stones throw away - I know where I'd rather spend my dollar. My son in law eggs ($16) tasted ok but the plate was rather small, so even with a side of chorizitos ($5.50) I was left feeling quite hungry! My chai was not bad, and I know they've only just opened so I will give them one more chance because the venue itself is so lovely.
Predator
Quite disappointed with streat . The coffee is great no doubt. The space is beautiful. Food pretty tasteless and unimpressive. They handled their menu to us with better sounding lunch dishes and we couldn't order them because was 20 minutes before lunch.
Ryan James
What a place! Went for breakfast and was amazed to see how an old brothel has been turned into a very cool looking café. Fresh baked bread and flowers for sale were a nice touch.
Service was stretched due to being really busy but our table was seen to promtly and the coffees were great, only to be trumped by my friend's Bloody Mary.
We all had different things from the menu and all had a little bit of food envy. The slight wait was worth it and totally excusable given how busy it was.
Definitely recommend (especially on a sunny day on the outdoor section).
Learning about the social aspect of STREAT made me feel even better about spending my dollars on breakfast for such a great cause.
Might go in again during the week when it's a bit quieter and so i can see the coffee roastery in action.

Worst service I've ever had at a cafe in Melbourne in 15 years I've lived here. Two of us arrived and told a table was 15 mins. Waited 30 then got seated at the arse end of a share table, of which the two seats had been free for at least 20 mins. Could see quite a few tables empty whilst other groups waited. Food took 50mins to arrive. We would have left earlier but the waitress told us twice the food was 5 mins away. Food pretentious. No offer of free drink until we were at the cash register. Bit late mate. STAY AWAY.
