Review Mamanee Thai Restaurant - Collingwood

Louise Naimo
I absolutely love Mamanee. The food is always fast, fresh, and tasty. I dine in often because I work nearby, and the service is consistently welcoming and attentive. Highly recommended.

Fantastic real taste of Thai food !! I love the Southern-style Yellow curry and the crispy pork with Chinese cabbages.

Finally, an authentic Thai restaurant that serves up a proper Thai curry! Delicious, authentic cuisine and a down to earth atmosphere that makes you forget for a second that you're actually in Melbourne. As some reviewers mentioned, even the mild curries pack quite a punch. Loved our meal here and will most definitely be back.

Decent pad krapow, a little bit more Szechuan in flavour but not bad. Not too oily. Very friendly service.
Ainsley Gomez
Pleasant, courteous staff. Very very tasty, cheap and cheerful!. Meals are cooked fresh and relatively quickly. I like Thai food! For coelics like me, you'd have more than a few choices! And so far I have found their gluten free dishes safe to eat. Thank you !

Southern Thai style, indeed. Where mild is hot and hot is 🔥 Decor is typical for a Thai establishment that puts flavour ahead of form. A bit warm/humid inside but nothing compared to restaurants in Thailand. They do have an aircon if you're used to cold and dry. Overall, great flavour, friendly staff, decor is a but old but everything is clean, and they sterilized the plastic kids plate set before giving to our toddler. Very happy.

Delicious authentic Thai food and very friendly wait staff and the two aunties behind the magic in the kitchen. CAUTION - even mild is very spicy! I requested some coconut milk to have with my mild curry. Will return :)

Amazing authentic Thai food. Highly recommend
Steve Clarke
I liked it. Yes it was Spicey as my partner forgot to ask for mild but still good enough to eat 1/2 of it... With my partner coming from South Thailand it was traditional food

Best one in town. A superior original southern Thai place even comparing to Those restaurant in Thailand.

Best thai restaurant in melbourne

Ordered food via Uber Eats, food arrived quick and looked good but when we attempted to eat it it was like trying to eat lava. Dishes were advertised as ‘medium spicy’ but they were nothing short of pure fire. I’m pretty good with spice, but the heat in these dishes was on another level. Won’t be going back and don’t recommend

For those familiar with Thai cuisine, this is about as authentic as it gets in Melbourne. Super underrated spot. Clearly a more southern Thai food experience, which is brilliant to see and taste. Lots of Thai locals eat here I noticed.

The atmosphere is very casual, and all the food is prepared in front of your eyes just behind the counter. A great spot for takeaway or a sit down meal.

Very generous portions and great value. Pad Krapow was delicious and they definitely give you a great amount of vegetables (some restaurants don’t!)

I will say however, that certain dishes such as the Pad Thai, didn’t quite hit the mark for me personally. This one was particularly different than most restaurants and was a little sweeter than I was used to. Perhaps this place does best in its specialty curry and stir fry dishes! Overall very good though

Came here again for the second time and still would love to come back. I feel like it is the only southern style thai restaurant we have in Melbourne. The food is more spicy than the usual thai food as Southern people they eat very spicy food. Today we had 4 main dishes to share and a taro sticky rice dessert. The dessert was not that good but the food was top notch! We really like the yellow curry with fish!
Peanut KrenCH
Cha Om Omelette and Hat Yai Fried Chicken - to die for! Stir fried pipis, soft shell crab apple salad, yellow curry tamarind leaves with grilled minced fish... I can go on and on and on.... FAVOURITE go to for Thai food!

Mamanee Thai in Collingwood. I was here during the lunch time. No people here on Wednesday lunchtime. A bit surprised me anyway I ordered the chicken pad Thai. I like the fast wok cook but the dish is a bit too sweet to me. Not my type of pad Thai. A bit disappointed.

Delicious & huge portions! Owned and operated by two Thai aunties for over 20 years. Your best bet for authentic southern Thai food in inner city Melbourne.

I always struggle to find an authentic thai food in Melbourne. Most thai restaurant that are scoring high in zomato tends to disappoint as their food is evolving to suit the Australian taste. When i first discovered Mamanee, their food tastes very nice, authentic, spicy, and not too much on the MSG note like most Asian restaurant. I really like their southern thai menu as most thai restaurant tends to recommend the usual suspects like tom yam soup or pad thai etc. I would highly recommend the dishes like crab meat fried rice, pad prik moo kroob (stir fry pork belly with chiili paste), deep fried whiting fish, moo yang (grill pork neck). You can tell me to cook it more spicy according to your tastebuds too. High recommended by an authentic thai food lover like myself. Sadly i didn't take photos of the dishes as we were too occupied to eat!
Chubbylover86
Authentic no frills Thai food. Stumbled on this place whilst walking past and saw the old Thai lady prepping food near the front so we took it as a sign to go in. The massaman curry and crispy pork belly was amazing and highly recommend. Would go back to satisfy my Thai cravings.

It blows my mind that there isn’t a queue of people trying to get in here every night. Ive been eating here for years and the food is consistently the best/most authentic Thai that we can find in Melbourne. Yes- it’s no frills decor doesn’t look like your standard Westernized Thai restaurant complete with wood ornaments and candles - but WHO CARES the food is amazing. Tasty, salty, sweet, sour, spicy.. everything you want your Thai food to be. Not to mention the price is reasonable, sizes are generous and staff are lovely. Oh and if you say you want it chili hot- it will actually be HOT- incase (like me) your into that sort of thing.

Fave dishes are the Penang curry.. Fried Barramundi with apple salad and the Chicken pad gra pao...amongst many many others.
Ben Milroy
Perfection, in the way it does what it says on the tin. For a cheap, casual Thai eatery, Mamanee is peerless in its ability to truly mirror what a genuine Thai eatery should offer. Food is exceptional, service is flawless, buzzing atmosphere and BYO anything.
Mr Wong
BEST THAI EVER! absolutely love the thai food here. Live south east melbourne and if i wanted thai i will travel all the way down here to dine for thai food. Beats all the thai food in VIC hands down... Friendly staff and great chef.
Iris Myandowski
I'm neither here nor there about this one. I'm not sure I could pick this passable Thai restaurant out of a line up of any other Thai restaurant in Melbourne. I had the (medium) spicy noodles with vegetables which were exactly as advertised.
Hollieborowski
Terrible. Flavourless and far too oily. No spice at all. Tasted like sauce from a jar. Will not go here again. Extremely disappointed. Ordered on Ubereats.
Nicole Felafel
Really disappointed...

My sister and I came in to eat on Saturday night. While they were very busy, the waitresses were very attentive to take our orders quickly. This is where the goodness stopped. We waited over 45mins before realising there were only 1 table in the whole restaurant with food. For a busy Saturday night they only had one chef on. He was lovely and apologetic for the delay in food. The delay was largely due to prioritising UberEats.

Our food also had too much shrimp paste, which was also burnt... so it gave the food a very unsavoury taste.

The score is solely for the responsivness of the staff and chef
Ko Rea
I have been here twice for take away. The staffs are very friendly and attentive. The foods are tasty and the price are fairly reasonable. If you can eat real spicy foods, this is the one to go for! Will definitely go back again!

Mama knows best at this cosy, understated Thai cafe in Smith Street of Collingwood. From the outside Mamanee Thai piques the curiosity of the passerby with it’s window-side kitchen and inside the food is a treat with an enviable home-cooking and authentic execution. I popped in for an unscheduled lunch due to the water pipe bursting at the office and all of us being sent home. Might as well make the most of it, and at Mamanee Thai you can get a $10 lunch that delivers value with a capital ‘u’.

UPDATE 25/04/2017
Consistently surprising, authentic, rustic, tasty, pleasant and for less than $50.00 dinner for two? I think those diners/foodies who loves overrated, Instagram, queuing up for months, fad, expensive so-called Thai restaurants should pay notice :-)

Mama said, "Never judge a book by its cover!!!!!!" Thanks Mum.

Mama Chef cooking at its best........

The old saying "Never judge a book by its cover" can only be a true refection of this establishment. Again do not be deceived by the quirky name, its location nor the street frontage, go inside and you'll discover these authentic Southern Thai food cooked by the Mama Chef, Mama Nee ....

Family run, always the best form of representing authentic food cooked with love and pride. It's a bit dark inside, not too much fanfares, adequately decorated, not too much Thai stuff, best part is the open kitchen where you can see all the action. You can sense that they are very family orientated, Mother & Son (?) runs the join, Mum is cooking and Son runs the show, harmoniously working in serving all patrons. What's more, they even provided us with documentation of these exotic ingredients they used in their cooking, like Sa-tor (Pete in Indonesian - see photos) love these stuff, smell like hell taste like heaven :-)

We are on our way to Footy at the MCG, running late, short of time and wanting some lunch. Found this place, thanks to Zomato, looking at the lunch Menu where all are mostly $10.00, unbelievable. Quickly ordered, my co-luncher went for the Massaman Beef curry on rice (no Onions) and I asked for Pad Thai Prawns and the owner checked whether is okay to charge me $12.00 instead of $10.00, I said okay, no big deal.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, cooked well, nicely presented, taste delicious, above and beyond of what they are charging. My Pad Thai comes with Tofu and a couple of large size Prawns also a carousel of Condiments. Massaman Beef Curry got a bit of kick to it, well done ..... I would be happy even if they charged me $15.00 for the Pad Thai Prawns, much much better than some of the more prominent restaurants around Melbourne.

More Mamas cooking in Melbourne please .... Mama Nee oh yeah.

Kap Khun Krap .....

Simply the best thai food in Melbourne - the spicy soup called gang som is sooo goood and the waiters are very friendly too. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is in need to have a homemade like thai cuisine

Dined here for dinner...

Thai is some of my favorite food, and was not let down.

Started off with some Chicken Curry Puff pastry, $2.50 a pop. I ordered 2, wasn't sure how big they'd be. 1 is plenty; light & flaky with a creamy curry, chicken, & veg filling. Not bad, nice starter.

For the main I ordered Pad Ped Moo Krob;
Stir fried crispy pork belly with spicy curry paste, chili, basil, coconut milk, and blend of vegetables. Host asked me if spicy was okay, I said go for it.
Man did this have a kick, very tasty, and a heat that built as you ate. Sweat beading up on my bald head, worth it. Sauce was flavorful, pork belly nicely cooked, and plenty of veggies to choose from.

Went ahead and dived into dessert: coconut ice cream with crepe and pandan custard filling. Very nice & great way to finish off the meal. Never had pandan, asked them to describe the flavor, not the easiest & after trying I can see why... Very unique flavor profile, and very delicious. Nothing else resembles the earthy, rich, sweet, "tropical forest" pandan aroma & flavor. Definitely going to experiment with this ingredient back home. The icecream was nice, with little bits of coconut mixed in & the crepe was nice and light, good buttery flavor. All worked very nice together.

The staff was incredibly polite, friendly, and watched my table closely if I might need something.

Over all really enjoyed my dining experience.

Encountered the rudest customer service
experience EVER in my whole life today at Mama Nee.

As we have never been to the restaurant
before, we asked a couple of questions when ordering which you would expect to
be happily answered by staff/owner, especially since there is no one else
there. Unfortunately, this was not the case. We commented that there wasn’t a
price shown on the menu which had photos of dishes, upon which the most
shocking comment was retorted by the guy serving us, “The price is there, don’t
you have eyes?!”……

Needless to say, my friend and I were
stunned and pretty much at loss for words. When we complained about the rude
and insulting comment he would continue to say that it was because we were rude….I
think for a few moments my friend and I just looked at each other like stunned
mullets but wait, this wasn’t the worst part. After a couple of exchanges about
his unnecessary comment querying the existence of our eyes, we said, do you
still want us to eat here? The reply was, “Just GET OUT!”

I think this is enough said and of course
we got up and left. The restaurant was completely empty when we entered during
lunch hour and we had wondered why when we walked through the door when the
rest of Smith St was buzzing. We wonder no more.

With today being Australia day I thought we would go for a traditional Aussie meal and head to one of our local Thai restaurants. One of the joys of living in Australia is the huge amount of different asian cuisines available and Thai happens to be one of my favourites. Rocking up at 6pm we were pretty early and the only people in the restaurant other than the staff who were enjoying an early dinner.
FionaC
Good food and very friendly service. No fuss with how the food came out. Efficient and friendly service. The waiter would always pay attention to our table and kept topping up our drinks (a small but important factor when serving customers!)

We love Mamanee! It's our family's go to restaurant for any excuse for a celebration. Our favourites are the Southern thai yellow curry cooked with tamarind leaves (highly recommend to go with the fried fish pieces), sweety belly and the chicken coconut salad. These items are on the specials menu and are exquisite! In fact, we have tried every single item on the specials menu and they are all excellent.
The owner's nephew is the perfect host - he is very friendly and knows our palates based on what we order and is happy to recommend dishes to us. He and the other staff are always so attentive and the ambience is second to none.
We value the authentic dishes and eating there is like being transported to Southern Thailand.

My Fiancé and I dined here last night. After reading through the reviews we were excited.
Upon entering our initial thought was that it was quaint and we weren't sure what to expect.
A waiter greeted us and took us to our seat. The service from then on was impeccable! Not once did our glasses of water run out but we were close to finishing our bottle when it was replaced with a brand new one. Thank god, finally a restaurant with great customer service.
The food was exceptional, we ordered a curry puff, tom yum soup, satay chicken stir fry and beef green curry. All produce was fresh, and simply amazing (please note, if you don't like spicy food, stick to the options that don't say medium heat). The green curry had a great kick to it. All the vegetables cooked perfectly (soft yet still a little crunch) and the beef wasn't over done. Much the same for the chicken! The Tom yum soup would have been the only little draw back as it was a little oily however we were apologised to a number of times for it. Overall, it didn't hinder our judgement of the whole evening.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone and will be going back again when we are in the area next!
Thank you Mamanee, it was delicious.

I've been going to Mamanee Thai for a few years now and it never disappoints. Front of house is generally manned by the owner's nephew. Extremely friendly guy who speaks perfect English. He's always on the ball and has never stuffed up our order. In the kitchen, food is prepared by 2-3 Thai ladies, and they make exceptional food!

Mamanee Thai is one of the most authentic Thai restaurants I've eaten at in Australia. It was nice to find such a good place after returning from Thailand. It's the only Thai restaurant I can find who does the raw prawn salad (if you guys know another place that does it, please comment below). This dish is awesome, great flavours and really spicy. My mouth waters just thinking about this dish.

Some other great dishes include their pineapple fried rice, duck curry, tom kha coconut soup, and stir fried chinese brocolli with crispy pork belly. Everything I've tried has been really high quality, but these are the dishes that stand out for me. They have also recently added a Southern Thai special menu, we ordered a soup from there and it was very good also. I really wish they had a steamed fish on the menu as that'll just complete the package.

Parking is pretty good and there's usually tables available for walk-ins. I normally just phone up on the day and have no trouble getting a table. To sum it up, Mamanee Thai is the place to go to for authentic Thai and great service. Highly recommended!

Ordered couple of dishes (as you do at a Thai restaurant) and was surprised by the above average tasting of all of the dishes I ordered. The Tom yum soup was definitely a highlight for me and the pineapple fried rice was delicious too! Enjoyed my dinner there // The waitress there was nice as well :)
Helen Bryson
We went here for dinner and really enjoyed it. The massaman beef curry was delicious. We also had the pad ped which was very spicy but yummy. The service was quick and the staff were friendly and polite.
World In A Bite
Been here several time but this time it doesn't taste good anymore ... Don't know what happened :/ hopefully it's just a one off night... This is quite authentic Southern Thai cuisine ... If you can handle spice, give this a go! :)
Craig O'Brien
If this place was any more authentic Thai, there would be elephants wandering the street outside. Two lovely ladies bringing the tastes of southern Thailand to Smith St. Recommend the Cha-om omelette with nam prik and Larb Gai is always delicious.
Mandy
I was expecting this to be delicious given the rating but it was just oil. Flavourless and oily. Made me feel sick :( sorry but I really don't rate this there are plenty of delicious Thai places about so avoid this one.
Julycheee
Surprisingly, we really didn't enjoy the food here. The service was lovely, but each dish was not quite right. The fried chicken was really salty. The pad thai was too sweet and lacked the balance and complexity from a good pad thai sauce. The chinese broccoli with pork was a bit of a sloppy dish. Big portions of food for the price, but we would rather a bit more care in the taste of the food.
Ashlee B
I got takeaway here on a recent Melbourne trip (the beef jungle curry and a curry puff). The food was prepared really quickly, and I enjoyed it-- the curry had good flavour and the curry puff was big and fluffy and yum.

Authentic Taste with no parallel in Australia!!!! Apparently this is not the place to get the boring ordinary Thai food like others, this place is famous for their southern Thai food. No one else can do better. I've been there several times and will be returning as long as I still live in Melbourne. Highly recommending to the one who knows what the authentic taste is like.
Food-in-Melbourne
One day, I found a new place in Smith Street called "Mama Nee" which is run by 3 mid-age women from Southern Thailand. Three ladies promised the unique Southern-style Thai food and that what I had been looking for since my first arrival.
Apple3green
The noodles were nicely stir-fried, with the right balance of sweet and savoury flavours, ending with that refreshing lemon hit and peanut crunch.
Fatboo
The menu was pretty fascinating with a Southern Thai style of food, including dishes like Gang Tai Pla – a hot & spicy Southern Thai curry made with fermented fish intestines, bamboo, bean and fish flake.
Joe
The thai food here is more wholesome and has a home-cooked feel unlike other restaurants that might focus on different regions or royal cuisine, this is scrumptious in its own way. A very casual setting, so come in your
Solo_safari
Food here was well presented and with flavour. Staff were very attentive &other thing I liked most was that it looked very much like a family business. Good value for money.
Trenet Caddy
AWESOME THAI. Such delicious authentic thai. Added points for the Greek artwork on the walls. Friendly staff and great value. Never disappoints
Denii
Great service but such food... Food was really average, especially by Melbourne standards. I'm super surprised they have a 93% rating (at the time when I walked in).
Rice is substandard in terms of raw ingredients, substandard in terms of cooking. Dishes are just so so.
On top of my head I can think of so many Thai food places around Melbourne that do way, way better.
And I forgot to mention, the place is not cheap either.
So if you're like me, looking for quality food, and relying on urbanspoon reviews, this rating is not indicative of the quality of their food, maybe more of their friendly service.
Katb
I love this Thai restaurant. I've been going here on a semi-regular basis for over a year now and LOVE the food. The people are really great and always remember my order, they're flexible with people with food allergies, and the food is incredibly tasty without being expensive. The location is great too and it works well for me to meet here with friends and colleagues, the environment is not flash, but the food and service completely make up for it. I would definitely recommend this little gem for people who love good Thai food. And as a vegetarian I am rating it highly!
NSF
Pad thai was very pedestrian and the massaman beef was lacklustre.
Frank
Great Authentic Thai Flavours. Title says it all
Victor
My wife and I had lunch here today. We ordered a Pad Thai Chicken and a Green Curry Chicken. Both dishes exceeded our expectation. Very authentic and delicious. The portion is larger than how it looks on the menu. Excellent service as well. Restaurant is run by real Thai people. Can't go wrong with that!
Thai Critic
Overpriced and not authentic!. My husband and I visited Mamanee Thai for our lunch with huge expectations. After the food came out, you could tell it was cooked from packaged pastes and the serving weren't big compared to the price they charged. Authentic?? Not even close. My first and last visit has been very disappointing and will not return.
Justin
Great food. , with a Southe.... Great food.
, with a Southern thai focus. I have coeliac disease, and they catered for my special needs by using an all in one seasoning that was GLUTEN free. Delicious food and would recommend this to anyone looking for quality Gluten free and vegetarian meals.
Anndando
Lovely Thai and Burmese. We had the Beef Massamun curry and a chicken and ginger stir fry and the flavours were well balanced and tasted really fresh. The service was lovely and the prices were reasonable. What more do you want?
Mike S
Had our first meal here tonight. Food was excellent and we will be back soon
Justin
Authentic spicy Thai. On the slightly more expensive side, but quite authentic. Don't go there for pad Thai or a red Thai curry, be adventurous.
Amelia_name43
Excellent food. Super awesome taste.I really love their food.High recommended for everyone.

Best Thai restaurant Ive had in ages.. Authentic, lots of flavour, great service, affordable pricing and their desserts are mouth watering. This lil restaurant has so much to offer. I'm going to take all my friends here.
Bukko Boomeranger
Not bad, but not that special. I was in the mood for Thai, and reading the rapt reviews of Mamanee put me in the mood to go there. It's not bad, but it's not as brilliant as other punters have portrayed it. The prices are not low, more in line with other Thai restaurants: $16.90 for noodle dish mains, $20 and up for some of the larger, more elaborate meat-heavy salads. The decor could be something from any average diner, aside from a few smaller bits of Thai art and a painting of Thailand's king. I know that you go to a resto to eat food, not see scenery, but exotic surrounds make an ethnic meal more enticing.

I had Hokkien noodles, and while the portion size was decent, it wasn't as large as some reviews led me to believe. The quality of the white meat chicken in the dish was high -- no gristle, cooked so it was soft, not mushy. The noodles were a trifle over-done, just a shade off the proper bouncy resistance you expect when biting in. (I used to read food blogs written by Asian noodle fanatics when I lived in Vancouver, Canada, so now I've gotten a bit elitist about the subject.) The meal was on the oily side, too, not unpleasantly so, but more than other Asian noodle dishes I've had.

Overall, I wasn't displeased with Mamanee, but I wasn't blown away either. I rate it as typical Thai.
Alwaysnuts
They deserve their high rating. Fantastic food,up there with some of the best Thai food I have eaten. The portions are really big too!!Amazeballs

Excellent. I love smith street for this reason. mama nee has been here for years. there are two of the best and cheapest thai restaurants within 200m of each other here. great thai, cooked by thais, and most customers are thai (if THAT isn't a recommendation then i don't know what is)
Jjaass
Yummanee!!. This has taken over from the other around the corner thai restaurant for me.
The staff are friendly and the food fresh, fiery and flavorsome. We always has the gai larb and som tum which are authentic in flavor.
Its good .
Emily
Spicy, spicy, and spicy!!! This is the kind of food that I do need on cold days. Thx Mamanee.
Jennifer.laird
What a find. Staff exceptionally helpful i have a nut allergy and they bent over backwards to accommodate me, they also respected our taste for mild food and where more than happy to please. we spring rolls and 4 different mains all where great value, fresh and plentyful. will certainly be calling in when in the area. big thank you to the lovely man waiter, so sorry i don't know your name but will make sure i get it when i next visit.
Alison Davies
Fantastic service that was quick. Food was delicious. Very large menu choice. Coconut rice and panang curry was superb. Will be back!

Reliable and Delicious!. My partner and I get take out and/or dine at Mamanee Thai at least once a fortnight. We have never been disappointed with the food or the service. Everytime we order take out it is ready within 15 minutes and is absolutely beautiful. The people who run this restaurant are lovely as well. This is the most reliable, yummy food on Smith! I recommend it to everyone!
Alicia Slay
Great prices, delicious food, massive serves.
Tofu Delicious and the green curry tofu are the best!
Rachel Patterson
Love it!. This is my favourite Thai restaurant in Melbourne. Freshest, most flavoursome and authentic food. Great service, great value. What it lacks in ambience it makes up for tenfold everywhere else.
Eurasian
Yeyyyyy REAL thai food- full of flavor, huge portions..what more could you want?
Bella
Delicious spice. Such great service and authentic, delicious Thai food. This place boasts the hottest dish I've found in Melbourne AND one of my fave dishes in Melbourne: the omelette with chilli sauce - I highly recommend it if you enjoy a spicy dish. Also the deep fried chicken.
Natalie Reiter
Excellent. We live in melb city and ride our scooter out to mamanee becasue the food is so good. it is original thai and the service is outstanding. The curries and stir fry dishes are the bext going arounf in melbourne. i rate this place 9.5/10.
Wayne
Great food and service. very attentive waiters
JB25
First glance was good.. When it came out the servings where big! When I got home and started I noticed that the fried chicken strips were mostly bone and skin and the best part was a wing that I managed to find Tasted ok for what was there but not worth $20.
The next thing I noticed my rather large serve of Pad Thai chicken is that it a had a lot of tofu packing it out. This wasn't on the menu and I found it a sneaky little trick to make the chicken go further.
Service was friendly and good though.
Schoenermann
Horrifying.. Mamanee has been one of my favourite restaurants in melbourne but the standard has clearly gone down a few notches.

curries being super mild and not spicy at all. tom yum was so sweet, not spicy and could tell it was cooked from packaged pastes was a major let down. thai beef salad (wrong move on this) was way too salty and looked like a stir fried dish topped with shreds of granny smith green apples. awkward. overall, my last visit has been very disappointing and will not return. it seems to me that mamanee has been tailoring their dishes to suit westerners taste but even the caucasian couples next to us couldn't finish their meal.
Debra B
The best Thai food ever. I wanted to take my daughter to a Thai restaurant in Brunswick street but neither of us had the correct address, so we ended up walking down Smith street looking for the right place, we walked passed MAMANEE Thai restaurant, it was very busy so we walked on to see if there was another, for some reason I wanted to eat there , so we went back to MAMANEE Thai and it was the best decision ever. The food was unbelievable, Tom Yum seafood soup and Pad Thai seafood was the best I have ever had.... the service was fantastic, 2 young men, very polite, very attentive, they made the dining experience worthwhile... i will definately go back and recommend them to everyone.
Nattpimpa
I love the authentic Southern Thai food! Mama nee is second to none when it comes to Southern Thai food. Please try Fried chickens, Kang Kee Lek, Klua Gling and Omlette prawn!! Love you Mama nee.
Maude Farrugia
Tasty and good. Tasty big servings of good cheap thai - just don't ask for mild! :) Probably the best thai in quality vs ration on smith street. We had yummy (spicy) green curry, tofu and vege with cashew and pad thai. All tasty, big 'n' simple!
x
Goldie
Unpretentious thai grub. This place has served me up many good dishes. prices have gone up so most things are $15+ but you get big portions so it evens out. many many good dishes to try ...i wouldnt say 100% authentic but its pretty close and more authentic to most others out there.

do not order pad thai!!! its really bad!!! ..im so confused how a thai person can cook a iconic thai dish so bad! ..but many good others on the menu! try it and see. ...parking can be hit and miss being smith street so ....

I return and return again!
Don CyberJunkie
Best Thai food. Unlike many pretentious Thai restaurant, this is delicious and have the home made feel about it. The service is always excellent. Been there so many times but will go back again.
BD
Great Thai food. Amazing food. But make sure you bring a company of more than two so that you can order a few different dishes to try. Serving size is quite large(match the price).
Ben Johnson
Mamanee. Apart from the darn air conditioner ( you need to either sit well away from the outlet or wear some heavy duty gear) the food is without question some of the most authentic unpretentious Thai home style cooking available. Sure it has that 'cafe' look but if its delectable food your after at reasonable prices then get your butt to that location. If you're after something more upmarket then this is not the place for you.
Nomnom
Pretty authentic. Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. We ordered a decent array of selection and the food came out promptly and service was good.

will definitely come back.

ps. if you love spicy food - this is the place for you!

Delicious. We went here with our 1 yo early on a sat night at 6pm. We ordered pad Thai for the kid, and veery spicy beef salad and yummy masuman curry for us. They had a high chair. The food was very good, tasted like home cooking. They didn't seem too concerned that our kid threw noodles on the floor, not as far as I could tell. Would go back.

Food reasonable however numerous staff standing around doing nothing & unresponsive to basic requests like asking for menus, ordering the waiting for the bill despite being the only ones there. The good food at this restaurant is let down by the staff; many of whom appear unaware of customer service requirements or perhaps what their role is in the first place :-(

Hot stuff. I went on a Friday night with two other friends and I'm glad we booked a table because it was packed all night. Wait staff were helpful and attentive and although service was a little slow the dishes were great - clean and fresh flavours. I highly recommend the coconut icecream (it has delicious pieces of real coconut) but be careful with spicy dishes - we couldn't finish a curry and chilli stir fry because it was too hot and I'm usually okay with a reasonable amount of chilli. But I'll definitely be going back.

We only recently discovered Mamanee despite living quite close. We have eaten there multiple times now and the food is consistently great. Our favourites include the mixed entree, green chicken curry and spicy fried rice with chicken. Staff are friendly and helpful and it's great value for money. This is now our go-to place for eat-in or take-away Thai.

Authentic Thai. We went last night and really enjoyed it. It was packed and seating was a bit tight, and service was a bit slow at the start but the food was all round really good - fresh, tasty and most importantly, tasted like Thai food! Probably the best place for Thai food in Melbourne that we've been to.

Wow. The food was fantastic! Had the Sum Tum and Larb Tofu (which they made by request) and both were amazing. Food was clean with a great balance of flavour and heat (was really hot and really tasty!). A small and unassuming place where most of the signs are written in Thai which indicates a lot of Thai patronage and that can't be a bad thing.

Great food!. Nice and authentic southern Thailand style food. They even have dishes not on the english menu that the Thais from that area can order. My Thai friend was with us and he ordered a fish stomach curry common to that area and we loved it. So far have eaten there for dinner twice and totally enjoyed it. Will be back there for more.

Friendly service, clean and fast. The best Thai in the area. You could walk straight past, but it's a great place to eat. The Chicken Chili and Basil is outstanding, as is everything we've tried.
